Gameplay and graphics are quite good. The story of the island is pretty interesting, but the actual characters have have very little backstory or development and I just didn't care about them. There's an instance where one of lara's friends dies and its this heroic sacrifice and sad moment, but I didn't even know the characters name until that scene because no one is memorable.
    Fun, but

Just an OK game. There is nothing special about this game. Story is OK, but story telling is horrible. Gameplay is repetitive but good. AI is garbage. Action sequences are great and the game is very well polished. Graphics are stunning. Controls are a bit weird. Overall an OK game.

I didn't play too many games of this kind, but I was satisfied with the experience of this game. Tomb Raider combines the action, the suspense, the mistery and the enjoyable overall experience of exploring. For me, Tomb Raider managed to meet the standards needed for this type of game. Even the game wasn't really too long, I've found joy in playing it and this is all that matters. TheI didn't play too many games of this kind, but I was satisfied with the experience of this game. Lara Croft in an Uncharted game might work on paper, but it works exceptionally well in practice. The grittier tone of Tomb Raider makes for a enjoyable ride from beginning to end and Lara can comfortably claim her place among the third person action adventure protagonist pantheon.

Tomb Raider is a fun action-adventure game with intrigue in the titular character at least and solid puzzle pieces. Decent graphics and sound and a competent story that defines Lara Croft. Overall, a credible distraction.

A great game with great game mechanics and storytelling! It's actually quite fun using and upgrading weapons (the bow of course is really fun!). I will admit that when it drifted a little more towards supernatural for the storytelling I didn't think it was necessary, but at the same time it didn't really detract and was going in that direction, so it wasn't out of place.

Great cinematics. The gameplay is a bit repetitive. In the end you just want to quickly finish the game. The final act after the helicopter crash was too lengthy and redundant. -Gorgeous scenery and graphics

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. + Strong and great intro to the game.

+/- Small areas with an awful lot of useless collectibles.
+/- Good but at the same time linear level design.
+/- Sometimes cutscense seems to be prolonged.

    - Artificially making it impossible to return to the way already travelled (suddenly the fire starts to spread throughout the whole floor, "unexpected" 15th explosion).
    - Puzzle are not demanding, e.g. suddenly there is a corridor through which we have to go (there is no other way!) and gas escapes in it, so we just have to tighten the valve, which is literally in front of our nose.
    - Often the "sudden turn of events" feels poorly written.
    - Platform areas are dull and not challenging at all.
    - AI is often totally idiotic even on the hardest difficulty.
    - The last boss fight was dull.
    - The ending is unfullfilling.

A brilliant game that in 2020 feels as fresh and beautiful as it was on release in 2013.
Uncharted didn't play in the series, so Lara was in a hurrah: I was on a high level of complexity, 100% finished everything and never got bored with the game. The mechanic is full of styles of passing too (bow as always top), the plot is spectacular and "typical" adventure, models of characters

Survival game? Awesome.. except you dont have to hunt, eat, heal any of the dozens of times you get life-ending injuries. Life threatening? Shrug it off. Life-ending? Maybe a cutscene where you have to remove a rusty metal whatever from whereever and never think twice about wading thru that water.. (You'll notice that in the first 5 minutes, and every hour after)
Lara is new to this? She doesnt know how to kill or survive too well? Only for the first 5 minutes. 1 hour into the game you already took down a whole platoon of bad guys. EASILY.
Action scenes? Good but overused. Die? Honestly just set the controller down and walk away. make some popcorn. Have a beer. The game will have killed you 20 times over in the meanwhile and restarted you. No button presses necessary. No consequences. No difficulty. NO GAME
The quicktime events ruin this, because you cant even relax during the cutscenes. They spam the buttons until you get used to it. THen they switch it. The first hour? Press Y/Triangle.
    Next hour? X-Boks button.
Good lord this game sucks, squeenix ruins everything it touched in the early 2010s.

I played every Tomb Raider since 1996, loved the stories, the character, the maps - especially the maps. (I never liked the movies though).
The new era games, starting with Legend in 2006 , Anniversary and, best of them, Underworld continued the line in the best possible way. I was a fan of TR with all its ups and downs.

The new era games, starting with Legend in 2006 , Anniversary and, best of them, Underworld continued the line in the best possible way. I was a fan of TR with all its ups and downs.

Then came “Tomb Raider” in 2013, the greatest downfall in game history!

First of all: what did they do to Lara? The former archetype of a heroine has all of a sudden been degraded to a whiney, overly dramatic crybaby, saying “oh god!” every minute. She is now Lara The Victim.

And her Face: Who is that? Ever looked at her in the previous 17 Years? That is not Lara Croft. Neither is her body.
Hey Guys, this is a videogame, was it really necessary to turn Lara Croft into a politically correctly shaped but boring character that looks and talks like the depressed, unemployed girl next door?

Gameplay has also been totally crippled. Gone are the days where you could freely run through huge levels in search of something.
The player is now basically allowed to press a few buttons in between two cutscenes. There is no flow in the game as it is constantly interrupted by cutscenes. Always cutscenes! Short cutscenes where you just lose control over Lara and the camera angle. Long cutscenes with annoying dialogues. You can skip some of the longer ones but you never get the feeling of moving freely through a map. Instead the player is kept on a very short leash, there is only one path to follow, very linear and predictive. It is more like a slightly interactive hollywood movie, bloated with drama and painfully stretched actionscenes that you have to endure while you wait to actually continue playing.

Positive thing is the graphics. It looks marvellous. But that is about it.

I got so annoyed by the gameply ant Lara’s constant whining that i uninstalled the game when i was only halfway through.
Same happened to the sequel “Rise of the Tomb Raider”. Gave it a try, got annoyed, deleted it.
Won’t buy the newer games and i think this is very sad.

Story was neat, unlike the second game this one has more of a fantasy twist than scifi.

A good first person adventure game, I recommend it. If you like it, you'll enjoy the second one even more - as it improves on the first in every single way.

    Downsides:
The side characters who aren't lara are all extremely irritating. Fortunately, you don't interact with them much at all.

I figured out who was going to betray me before the end of the game in the PROLOGUE. Geeze.

Combat can be a bit janky. Probably only noticeable if you've played the second one, which was much more smooth.

In hindsight, if you play the games out of order, Lara's freakouts in the second game over murdering someone make zero sense. You're in the triple, if not quadruple digits as far as kill counts are concerned by the end of this entry.

Lara did not speak much, but her facial expression tells you how much she hated that request.

I did not give this game a 10, because I feel a bit conflicted about this game's use of "Tomb Raider" as its title. On one hand it is indeed one of the best action-adventure games and a worthy reboot for the dated series, on the other hand it has no "tombs" to speak of...The tombs are just mini-puzzles and have nothing to do with the main story. IMO, they should have used a new title since the game has nothing to do with the "originals" anyway.

Try and die then figure out how not to die and keep trying. This is one of the most boring games I've played. The cut scenes don't really advance the limited story line. It's a nice looking game but it's just a run, jump, die a thousand times then shoot something.

I recently started playing this game on my new PC, and i was surprised on how good it looked and played. My only complaint is that if you don't have a controller, don't even bother trying to get through some of these quests. I have not yet finished the game, but I am still intrigued by the story and character development. A solid 9.

This game was overloaded with cheap action, cliche dialogues and lacked any clever puzzles to solve. The levels were embarrassingly linear and the only challenges it provided were those where dozens of bad guys started attacking you and you had to shoot 'em all. Buckets of blood and piles of rotting dead bodies (literally) don't make it an adult game.

A fantastic game with a very interesting world, great voice acting and gameplay that lacks originality but is well polished and satisfying. Tomb Raider offers a more realistic and dark experience than franchises like Uncharted and that isn't a bad thing, with a cool concept and its simple yet effective weapon and perk system Tomb Raider is a game everyone should try out.

An amazing reboot that renews the formula of the Tomb Raider franchise, making it a pseudo-fantasy action survival game with good cinematics, storytelling and a semi-linear gameplay allowing you to take detours and raid tombs as side quests -- opening up more of the story and the setting. The gameplay is classic 3rd person mechanics with cover shooting, hiking, platforming and excellent puzzles. The side missions are adding extra fun.

The arsenal is classic except the bow, which is by far the most fun weapon with authentic mechanics.

The background is so well made. As you progress into the hostile island, you learn its history through cues, collectables and journals you earn, with several side stories.

Graphically, Tomb Raider is beautiful, with all the merit going to its jaw-dropping artistic direction - you will never see ancient temples like those!

Key issues included the resolution. Weirdly some of the action sequences that require specific key combinations only worked on extremely low resolution settings and in one instance simply never worked. This was the point where I could not continue the game.

Other problems included intermittent black screens and occasional freezing during cut scenes.

All of this on a very respectable mid range gaming rig that was more than able to manage most games of this age (2013) very easily.

A real shame as the game whilst a very basic concept was playable and enjoyable. The puzzles were mostly fairly basic and easily solved but again the bugs could kick in to hinder undertaking certain actions or mislead you into thinking the correct solution was unworkable.

Get the message game developers, testing is important!!!!!

Tomb Raider brings us back to the origins of young Lara by re-establishing her roots and reaffirming her purpose as an adventurer. Although it is the thirteenth game in the series, Crystal Dynamics decided to entirely reboot the series instead of making the game a sequel by re-establishing the origins of Lara Croft again, similar to Tomb Raider: Legend (the ninth game of the series). LaraTomb Raider brings us back to the origins of young Lara by re-establishing her roots and reaffirming her purpose as an adventurer. Although it is the thirteenth game in the series, Crystal Dynamics decided to entirely reboot the series instead of making the game a sequel by re-establishing the origins of Lara Croft again, similar to Tomb Raider: Legend (the ninth game of the series). Lara undertakes her first expedition with her friends on a ship named Endurance to locate the lost Kingdom of Yamatai. Legends say that Yamatai was once reigned by Queen Himiko, also known as the “Sun Queen,” who possessed shamanistic powers that granted her control over the weather. When the Endurance enters the Dragon’s Triangle, a sea off the coast of Japan infamous for its paranormality, it encounters a brutal storm and quickly sinks to the bottom of the sea, leaving the survivors stranded on an unknown island.

Tomb Raider begins its gameplay with Lara isolated on an unknown island and is forced to struggle to survive and reunite with the other survivors. As the game progresses, Lara discovers that the island is the lost kingdom of Yamatai and that her friend Samantha is a descendent of the Sun Queen. As she tries escape the island with the other survivors, Lara finds herself battling off a violent cult known as the Solarii Brotherhood to save Samantha from being forced through a fire ritual to make her the Sun Queen’s successor. Although it is expected for this game to become progressively violent, Lara’s first kill dramatically escalates the game, which triggered the first of many adrenaline rushes within me. With Lara’s life at the palm of my hand as I hold my PS4 controller, the impact I saw that this kill made on Lara as she was overwhelmed by distraught and terror while retching over the lifeless body of her victim evoked a sense of empathy within me. However, this heart-wrenching moment is short lived, for she almost instantly becomes a ruthless killer as she fights through the game. As Lara undergoes this transformation in her identity, so do I as the player.

As unique as Tomb Raider is, it has action sequences other great action-adventure games have: Lara escaping from burning structures and gliding down treacherous waterfalls. However, don’t be discouraged by these cliches because Tomb Raider remains a dynamic game with a diverse gameplay. When you aren’t at the edge of your seat between the combats, you’re completing mobility quests and survival hunts, such as climbing mountains with Lara’s axe, dodging and demolishing obstacles down a landslide, and eliminating opponents with stealth or weapons. Crystal Dynamics employs active artificial intelligence in the supporting cast, and this is a neat feature because you are able to steer clear of certain members of the Solarii Brotherhood if you avoid being sighted by hiding behind a barrier. This ability augments the authenticity of the gaming experience and places more control in the player’s hands. The well-designed game space allows you to explore the land almost freely with some restrictions of mountain climbing.

I greatly appreciate Lara being a female character with an unwavering sense of courage, determination, and high-level intelligence in both mental and physical skills––not only because I am a woman myself. Her character is revolutionary and breaks down many gender barriers in the male-dominated industry and culture. Lara underwent a physical transformation by the rebooting of the series: she now has an average body figure and is wearing long archeologist pants instead of her iconic short-shorts, as seen in past games. This is a significant change because it shifts the focus on Lara from her infamous identity as a sex symbol to her characterial identity as a brave archeologist and hero. Unlike most male-lead games, Tomb Raider features a capable and independent heroine––not a damsel-in-distress––thus empowers women behind and in front of the gaming screen and reaffirms the fact that all genders are equally powerful and competent.

Overall, Tomb Raider is exciting, action-packed, well-written, and beautiful and won’t fail to impress any player it comes across. Its narrative is remarkable and captivating and its gameplay is both emotionally and physically stimulating, in which the player is able to balance their enjoyment in the killing sprees with the emotional connection they feel with Lara’s empathy for her loved ones. I had a very enjoyable time playing the game, and I believe that rebooting the Tomb Raider series definitely pushed its reputation higher up in ranking. Tomb Raider (2012) successfully provides an experience where players are captivated by the ability to make their own decisions and take on the role of Lara as their own. In my experience, I’m no longer just playing Lara Croft: I am Lara Croft.

Summarizing: I would say the game is decent. The story sucks, but it is not that big of a problem. It took me 11 hours to finish this game, which was just a bit too long for me, because it started to annoy me at the end. There is a multiplayer, but I didn't play it, because I didn't really feel like it. It's a decent game.

Let's start with what makes this game good. Now, some games choose to let the player start off with all core mechanics available. For example: Far Cry. You can either buy new weapons, abilities or other utilities to upgrade your character, but that doesn't really add anything in terms of interesting mechanics. Sure, you can buy a skill that lets you chain stealth kills, but that is just the mechanic of a stealth kill being repeated. In my opinion, that makes a game boring, unless you've got some epic story or other gameplay to back it up.

And then you've got other games, like Tomb Raider, that get it right and gradually give you new equipment which unlock new mechanics. You start the game with absolutely nothing.
First you find a bow and you learn how to hunt, something you will (by the way) never ever do again in this game, but that is besides the point. You learn that you can only light your torch using fire sources, but then you find flint and steel to light up your torch without the need of those sources.
You get a lighter to shoot fire arrows. You get this thing that lets you go - whooosh - up on ropes. That was my favorite item. In terms of weapons: you find a handgun, machine gun, shotgun and bow, which are all upgradable; nothing too fancy. You find crafting parts to upgrade weapons, but most of the time you don't even really notice the upgrades.

Let's move on to the story. The story **** sucks. The story is about Lara traveling to Japan to find some hidden island, or something. You're ship ends up in a storm and as a result you're stuck on this island. Initially, you're separated from your group. When you find them, you find out one of them is kidnapped by other people, who are also trapped on the island and have been for some time.
And the game basically revolves around rescuing her. The characters in this game are as boring as the game is predictable. I do not give a **** about them. Early on, a few of them, with whom you're probably supposed to have some kind of a connection die. And I couldn't have cared less when it happened. At some point later in the game, you try to escape the island, but you can't due to some kind of mystical power. Later you see these sort of zombie-samurai, which adds some tension.
But then later on, you find out that you can just shoot these guys! AND that they're about as powerful as normal enemies!
However, what the game does do well, is its epic sequences. Trying to escape a collapsing cave or dodging spikes when sliding down a cliff, is really cool. But, but ... They overdo it. Just a bit too many of those sequences.

Now, except from the story: what can you do? Not that much that is actually fun. There are collectibles, but when playing they didn't really feel worth to find. Let's talk about tombs. They start off really cool: they have this small part where you slowly walk in, which sets the atmosphere really nicely. BUT the tombs only consist of one puzzle you have to solve. I have to admit though, they are harder than your average gaming-puzzles, but just having to solve one puzzle, makes it feel a bit too easy. So, what DO you get when you finish a tomb? Gold? Some ancient artifact? Nope, you get the same **** animation of her gasping and you get ... crafting parts. Waaaauw. Really worth it.

Uhm, what else? You have the same animation over and over when you stealth kill someone. Enemies take way too many bullets to kill. You can take three clips before you die, even on hard-mode.

It feels so out of place when compared to the story. In cutscenes Lara is just an ordinary person with extensive survivalist background, but in combat she is unstoppable killing machine that takes down dozen of armed enemies at once, soaking tons of bullets in process.

Overall Tomb Raider is a good game, but i think that it could've been much better if amount of shooting was scaled down.

    Cons:
    - Combat, while smooth, gets very repetitive.
    - Story is bearable, but characterization, dialogue, and VA makes it seem much worse than it is.
    - Weapon parts and how to find them are very poorly explained.
    - Controls are sloppy, especially compared to Uncharted.
    - Weapon selection is too limited.
    - Too many pointless and poorly implemented QTE.
    - Awful in-game economy.
    - Not balanced around M+KB, makes the game too easy.

    Final Word
    - While enormously flawed, especially in its combat and story, the overall experience is greatly elevated by the interactive, open environments and stunning visual direction.

    - 8.1

An amazing reboot of my favorite ever video game character. Rich single player story and amazing game play is what pushes this game to the next level. Graphics is stunning. There were so many times where you feel like stop playing and just appreciate the beautiful island that you are in. Overall an outstanding game.

One of the best games you can play on the PC today. Great adventure, great production values, great gameplay. You won't be bored for a second. Totally underrated.

Z drugiej strony jednak, czy każda seria (a zwłaszcza jeśli chodzi o gry) nie powinna się rozwijać wraz z biegiem czasu? Na to pytanie musicie sobie sami odpowiedzieć… Jeśli chodzi o długość nowego Tomb Raidera, to przejście gry zajęło mi około 9 godzin. Lara Croft powraca w wielkim stylu.

Tomb Raider reveals the most vulnerable and compelling Lara Croft to date, giving the female protagonist an exceptional reboot that is worth discovering.

Tomb Raider – or, as it more accurately might be called, QTEs and Shooting From Behind Waist-High Walls – is not a game about raiding tombs. There is only one tomb you “raid” to any meaningful extent as part of the story, and then only at the very end. If you were hoping for a large number of platforming puzzles and overcoming ancient traps and suchlike, you’re going to be disappointed.

Tomb Raider is, instead, a cinematic action game. Where the game excels is in movie-like action sequences – bits where you run through a burning building and fight your way out, or run across a disintegrating bridge, or maneuver around a boat which is being shot apart around you. It is in these scenes that the game excels and feels exciting, as Lara Croft makes her way through the environment.

Sadly, this game offers very little else that excels.

The game is ostensibly a “how Lara Croft became who she is” story, but at that, it actually doesn’t do a very good job at all. The biggest problem – which I’m afraid is kind of crucial – is that the game does a rather poor job of doing exactly that. Lara Croft apparently learned how to do many things before this game even started, as in the tutorial sections towards the beginning, she constantly refers back to things she learned from other characters. As such, this is really the first time she used those skills.

Beyond that, I don’t know who Lara Croft is by the end of the game. She is, frankly, a generic power-fantasy action hero who is kind of whiny about it. When she kills a bad guy for the first time, she freaks out a bit and cries – but this is an event which has zero meaningful emotional impact on the audience. The problem is, we’ve all killed bad guys in video games before, and this particular rendition thereof is not particularly remarkable. Worse, Lara Croft herself is a certified badass – perhaps not at the beginning of the game, but by reputation, we know that Lara Croft is one of gaming’s Big Heroes. And indeed, throughout the rest of the game, Lara Croft kills many hundreds of bad guys, with pretty much zero impact.

As such, the game is already undermining the idea that taking a life is a big deal here at all – mechanically, it isn’t, players have already done all this before, Lara Croft herself is reputationally someone who kills lots of people, and in the game she kills hundreds of people.

She is scared for much of the game, until she resolves herself at the end, but this is simply not communicated mechanically – you feel powerful as you slaughter your way through hundreds of bad guys. When she starts shaking in the cutscenes after having escaped death and gone through numerous ridiculous movie setpieces, it just doesn’t sell itself to the audience at all emotionally.

This results in a sharp disconnect between the audience and the character, and indeed, between the character in cutscenes and the character outside of cutscenes, as she is actually played. It just doesn’t work.

And this means that the entire story falls flat on its face.

The plot itself is a mess – numerous characters come in and out of the story, but the reality is that there is just no reason to care. There are at least two characters who are introduced to you and then killed off a scene later, negating any possible emotional impact their deaths might have had. The only good guy character who spends any significant amount of time with the player through much of the story is Roth, but his presence, too, is too ephemeral for the player to care about what happens to him, and his eventual fate is not something that the player feels in any way responsible for.

It doesn’t help that the characters themselves are all extremely flat. Lara talks about her dad’s theories, but we don’t get a good grasp of who were dad was. Sam, the person you’re trying to rescue, is not someone you forge any sort of meaningful emotional bond with as a player – there are a couple of flashback scenes, which I thought were there to try and establish the bonds with the absent characters, but then they end and I’m left going through the rest of the story trying to rescue someone that I have no real emotional connection to. I mean, sure, you’re going to save them – you’re the hero – but as the player, you have no reason to care. Likewise with the rest of the surviving crew, who mostly only show up towards the end of the game.

The bad guy himself is a standard crazy cult leader/survivalist, and the bad guys are dudes with guns, occasionally mixed up with dudes with machetes and a few dudes with riot shields. Almost everyone you confront throughout the game falls into those categories; there just isn’t enough variety. There’s a handful of wolves, who only feel threatening in any way at the beginning, and a tiny number of "boss-like" enemies - maybe two or three in the entire game, and none are particularly exciting.

    The good:
    -Good graphics and map design.
-Tight controls. -Memorable action scenes. The bad: -Although the map design is rich and smart, it relis way too much in "going back or around things to get goodies". -Way too linear and scripted. -False sense of survival. It's just a straightforward action-platform game. -Optional, short and easy tombs in a game called "TOMB" raider.

Crazy good reboot with fantastic graphics and adventure. Nice mechanics and good feeling to the game with good story and the new Lara is hot and cool.

Even if you are not a Tomb Raider fan or you fear that you are not good with puzzles then don't be afraid because this is a whole new Tomb Raider game and the pizzles are incredibly easy and there is more action and story than puzzles.

Great game. Interesting, engaging, flowing. Visually it is making fun of the newest titles, looking better than most of them while being 4 years old and requiring one third of power. The game certainly is linear but it is a positive here, linear story driven game with world adjusted to it gives much better and consistent experience than open world full of inconsistent nonsense. Game driven by intensive story has to be linear, otherwise it becomes inconsistent and not believable. It will take more time until you can replay the game, but this is the only major disadvantage of this kind of design. The only major thing missing are decisions to make that would have affect the world or what happens to some characters, but that's all, this is 3rd person action/adventure story driven game done right. While not every promising idea Tomb Raider has is pulled off successfully, it nevertheless turns in a tense and memorable ride that combines modern game design with its forebears’ adventurous spirit in some exciting ways. Some of its missteps may well come at the cost of your enjoyment, but most can’t hope to hurt the adventure in the long run. Although it never fully finds its identity, this is a game and a story worth seeing through.
