So what is Tom Clancy's The Division? Addictive action RPG in a beautiful coat that grabs you and doesn´t let go. [Issue#263]

An immensely thrilling action-MMO hybrid, but good for 30 hours rather than the hoped-for 300. [May 2016, p.70]

This game that could've gone so wrong, so easily, is already off to a great start with more content both free and paid set to come over the next year.

The Division is a very good game. Mixing singleplayer and multiplayer in a splendid New York setting, the map offers plenty of content and the Dark zone is a really nice PVP/PVE place to play. The gameplay is simple, the AI is far from good, but the entire experience is a must.

I may wish a plague of locusts on Ubisoft support, but I tip my hat to the masters over at Massive Entertainment.

I don’t think it’s very good, especially if you’ve a mind to play by yourself. It’s certainly addictive, and it certainly has plenty of stuff for you to do. That goes doubly for people who plan to roll with a squad of friends. As in Borderlands, the general tedium of loot-grinding is more fun when you’ve got people to chat with. If you’re looking for a mindless way to kill a few days/weeks, The Division exists...But don’t expect to remember much of it when it’s over.

The graphics are ridiculously good and the atmosphere in the city transfers well to the player. The game mechanics work good, the game is optimized well and has a lot of configuration options. I'd even say that technically, it's one of the best games I've seen. It's a good shooter, coop is fun and all is good so far.

At this point you could say I got my money's worth and I did, but this game was advertised as an MMO shooter and once you hit a high level, there's no reason to continue playing, because there's nothing left to do except grinding in the dark zone and do repetitive daily missions.

The game also has some serious issues with cheaters, because so much of it is client-side.

The Division has unbelievable potential, but a poor delivery in some areas. I still enjoyed the time I played, but lost interest too much to buy any extra content.

UPDATE: With the recent patches (1.5) a lot of the game's issues have been improved and the game is really enjoyable. There's a scalable difficulty, good item progression, more activities and even performance and UI improvements. It's good to see that they keep improving the game and fixing stuff.

Initially I was annoyed to learn it would be an MMORPG but having played Destiny - I am okay with that.

Gameplay wise it is okay I guess, there is quite a bit of repetition to it, go from A to B and kill C or go from A to B to C to D and find person E. It's variety comes from the landscape that these missions take place in, different parts of NYC. There are some elements which are very undersold or not well explained - like the crafting mechanics, I just don't get it - they're so basic but not explained to you in any shape or form.

The characters in the game are quite good, they're actually well acted well thought out and some of them are likeable. I particularly like the vendors who randomly yell things at you like as you are walking to another part of the map they yell - "You won't buy quality things over there!". Missions are good, but just like the side activities - feel repetitive and the excitement comes from the locations you're playing them out in.

The PVP dark zone is great, you can be a complete pain in the behind and murder everyone or go in there and find some great equipment and leave. Depending on what you want out of it, it can be interesting.

Finally Graphics - yes it has been lightly downgraded from the initial E3 demo we were showed, you aren't getting dynamic textures which change with weather and snow any more and the fidelity of the cars seems less. But by and large this is the most beautiful game open world game I have ever played. The atmosphere of NYC is brilliant and it really feels like a damaged city. Sounds / Atmospheric effects and music are all excellent.

However don't think you will run this at 60fps on 1080p/Ultra settings on anything less than a 980ti. I have not experienced any bugs or glitches, but it is a beast to run.

Overall it is a good game, but there is a caveat that it isn't as great as you are probably going to think it will be and the repetitive nature of the game will likely grate on you.

Which is odd for a game that does absolutely nothing new (and mostly because it only does a handful of things OVER AND OVER AND OVER), but really does nothing wrong.

The Division is an odd mix of an ARPG Lootershooter and an MMO, without ever truly being either due to a woeful lack of meaningful character customization and loot. The best description of the game really is a shell -- because it could have so many great things, but instead it gives you 3 and you do them over and over for 30 levels in pve, and 50 or so of them in pvp.

The pve mode is enjoyable, but prepare to do a lot of the same things over and over with a different voice telling you what you're doing. 5-6 side quest missions per area with a different voice over in each area, and a main-story-ish mission per area... and when I say main story, I mean something vaguely linked to the last thing you did in the area to try and save the city.

Pvp is incredibly lackluster, and suffers from typical problems -- no balance between weapons and skills leading to a dominant weapon type and skill set, oh.. and it only really exists in the "dark zone". Sure, it sound ominous but it really means about 8 blocks worth of area you have to repeat kill stuff in for 50 levels. Yes. 50.

End of the day Destiny is a far better game, but it lacks the gritty ambiance of The Division -- which on systems that can support 4k resolutions looks fairly amazing. The problem with the game is what rests on the inside, and in that space there just isn't that much to do.
