What it lacks in polish it makes up for in nostalgia vibes. TP starts great but it feels like the narrative is rushed, characters go underused and the abrupt ending is unsatisfying, a almost literal deus ex machina type ending which robs the player of any sense of accomplishment or decent wrap up for the characters. There are also quite a few moments where characters will use each others names without having previously met or been aware of each other and the general flow of progression and character switching is not as well done as it could have been.

The game feels like a decent indie game and while good, it could have easily been a lot better. The multiple characters could have been what made this game great but it ends up diluting the overall experience because there simply isn't enough narrative or game to go around. It feels like maybe the devs overreached in concept and couldn't quite execute.

Good game though if you are a fan of the genre but don't be expecting it to reach the bar set by the likes of Monkey Island.

Though it may not appeal to everyone,Thimbleweed park is a great point and click game which has great puzzle based gameplay and interesting characters but falters due to a not so great ending and some unexplained character arcs.

I grew up on Maniac Mansion. I’ve made pixel art versions of myself in Maniac Mansion style, my ringtone is the Edison Theme, I even tried to watch the TV show during the brief time it was on. I’m a big fan. I really enjoyed Thimbleweed. I thought it was great they threw back to Maniac Mansion, rather than some of the newer point/click games.

I’ve read the team really tried to give us a rose-tinted experience of nostalgia rather than a direct copy of the style back then. Still, I found some things left in that bothered me. The first being the long unskippable dialogue. I remember back when audio/video on computers was new it was a delight to click on everything. Now, I’m like “get on with it!” Doesn’t help the voice acting is pretty bad (intentional?) or that the jokes are old (also intentional?). I turned on the voice only when Ransom was talking and then only because it’s hard to read a million “BLEEPS.” I don’t get the censorship. There’s already sex, drugs, theremin music, and murders.

Another thing that bothered me was the occasional long convoluted walks around the background. The cemetery was the worst. This is probably another in-joke, taking a common complaint to absurd levels. That doesn’t make it enjoyable, though. “What fun! The developers are intentionally irritating me! Ha-ha. I see you through the 4th wall there!” Another example was the amount of hotel floors mixed with the super slow elevator. A virtual elevator would have thrilled me in the 80s, but here it’s tedious and really unnecessary. The amount of rooms used in the game only takes up a single floor. Could have made the hotel rooms on one floor and made the elevator only go to the penthouse, which would be instant after you solved the only puzzle in the elevator itself.

The next annoying part: Specks of dust. They even say in the game the specks of dust are there to annoy OCD-like players. The joke could have made with just a single piece and it would have been mildly amusing. Instead it’s a blight, painting nearly every room with the throwaway joke. Imagine watching a funny movie you love but now someone says “that’s what she said” after every line. That’s kind of what it’s like. Even if you’re not of the “collect everything” variety, they still demand your attention and incrementally ruin the scenery. Super annoying. Really. The options need a “dust-off” setting, or something. See how my review is yellow instead of that pleasing green? That's me messing right back with the developers.

While paying homage to Maniac Mansion, they left out some things, the most glaring of which is multiple endings. I really think that’s why Maniac Mansion was such a classic and something like Day of the Tentacle wasn’t. You could play Maniac Mansion multiple times, with entirely different styles, and get a new outcome. Thimbleweed really only has one solution, and I think that's a shame.

Another thing dropped from Maniac Mansion is the deaths. In game they say deaths are just a cheap way to extend gameplay, but I think they were essential to the vibe of Maniac Mansion and could be considered “endings” themselves.

I like the “wireframe” art style a little better than the real mode. I wish they would have ran with that art style instead. I don’t know. If you’re doing old school, do school. When Day of the Tentacle came out, I remember thinking the same thing. "Where's my MM graphics? What is this?"

Ok, that sounds like a lot of complaining, don’t get me wrong, I love the game and hope they keep making them. I just thought that some of their ideas in this new indie config fell flat or could have done better to get my 10. Does Thimbleweed dethrone Maniac Mansion? No. Is it worth your time? Yup.

Considering that Ron Gilbert, the designer of such smash hits lake the Manic Mansion and the Monkey Island games, was in on this project is a double disappointment. Where are the humorous dialogues from those previous games? Where is the story? Where are the characters? I mean, don't get me wrong, the game is not terrible, it's just not... good. It is like a low-budget indie game, even though the budget was not that low (come on, they made more that 600k on Kickstarter alone!). Truth be told I played better point-and-click adventures over the last few years, and their releases weren't blown out-of-proportion like Thimbleweed's.

Once again I got myself hooked up on the nostalgia trip trick, and once again it failed me. Unfortunately.

this is so boring .. nothing to do with old lucasfilm adventure games . puzzles are not logical and u have to control 5 persons and try with different peron each thing . not a good game at all . 6 points for the graphics and retro memories . humour is not very funny , and the dialogues are UNSKIPPABLE ?!? wtf .. hearing the same dialogue for the 5th time is so annoying .

+ Beautiful graphics / retro feel
    - the story did not grab me (stopped playing about 1/4 of the way through)
    - mostly dull or annoying characters
    - unskippable dialogue

All in all, a rather poor imitation of classic 90s LucasArts games. So many people seem to like it, but I just don't see what all the fuss is about.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Thimbleweed Park's most valuable asset lies in the fact that the Ron Gilbert finally 'returned home' to the point & click adventure games genre that he basically created. Creator's latest work is, as it is stated many times before, 'spiritual successor' to the Maniac Mansion, the game that started it all. Thimbleweed, however, does not have dead-ends nor do you have to save game all the time in fear that your character might die at any turn, the feats which made its aforementioned predecessor a lot less enjoyable to play than the certain following p&c adventures from Lucasfilm/Lucasarts. The game heavily relies on the nostalgia (which is understandable), but, aside from that, what does it have to offer to 'veteran' players that prefer substance over a mere trip down the memory lane? Let's get objective rather than just copy paste every single review on the net.

Game's interface is as good as it gets. Nostalgic attempt to recreate the legendary SCUMM engine is, by all means, not a bad thing as SCUMM to this day remains the best engine for p&c adventures. Coincidentally or not, after the SCUMM was abandoned, the genre began to rapidly decline in popularity.

The characters are probably the lowest point of the game. Apart from Delores and Ransom (by far the most amusing character) rest of the playable cast is by the numbers - unlikable and one-dimensional which is all due to, as it has become an increasingly annoying trend throughout the entire entertainment industry, an over-imposing political correctness. Main char Delores Edmund is the smartest, the most capable and the most emotional of the bunch (boring as hell, though). Agent Angela Ray is typical man-hating feminist that enjoys putting down and verbally abusing her wimpy junior colleague, a token latino Antonio Reyes (who, for all we know, might as well be gay, not sure about it). White boys are, of course, losers with a capital 'L': Ransome the Clown, although only one truly fun to play with, is a jerk that gets cursed for being such, while Franklin Edmund is a ghost of a whiny nerd. As always, role of a villain is also reserved for straight white male: enter Chuck Edmund - local tycoon and mad scientist. His latter title comes as no surprise as it is yet another throwback to Maniac Mansion. Talking about it, the main protagonist from that game, Dave, appears in Thimbleweed as well. He is reduced to a burger flipping retard that gets bullied by his redneck wife Sandy, the very same girl he rescues in the MM (see under 'political correctness' above).

Voice acting is pretty weak. Agents sound so irritating that you'll wish for an option to mute just the two of them. The rest of cast is so-and-so.

The surroundings are nicely done, though they quickly become repetitive. And don't expect anything like the breath-taking mystic environment of the first three Monkey Island entries.

Music is nothing to write home about. It is discreet for most of the part (which is, I imagine, the way it was intended to be), but so forgettable.

The story is overall just okay. It doesn't get too boring, but it never really rises up to the expectations either. The dialogues fortunately don't last for too long, although they could stand to be somewhat more elaborate. Another downside is that they are unskippable for most of the part. I found the humor to be too childish, while the so-called creepy moments lacked the dramatic effect. The ending is very unsatisfying (which is probably intentional) and it goes on for far too long for my taste. All in all, very average experience storywise. I doubt I'll be remembering most of it after a couple of days.

The puzzles are not too hard, though I see how they could be considered as quite challenging to the newbies to the genre. A fine balance is accomplished in this regard.

Thimbleweed Park is a long way from being one of the most accomplished games of its genre, but its true significance is in reemergence of interest in point & click adventures. Ron Gilbert is back and we can certainly hope for future classics in the likes of the Secret of Monkey Island, the Day of the Tentacle, the Dig... And, who knows, we may even finally learn the true ending to Monkey Island saga. ;)

Thimbleweed Park ultimately seems to care about neither its story nor its characters. What’s the core here, then? I suspect it’s just about the easy, wistful smile, and the prick of familiar memory. Do you remember? asks Thimbleweed Park as it displays its lustrous imitation of a bygone era, and on seeing a nod it lies: Yes, it was just like this.
