This is a walk down memory lane for me and as victim to reminience I recently loaded up the old thiefs to hark back to the old days and found my memories were far more golden than the gameplay itself. Age has not been kind, graphically, to the old series. This new thief iteration captures the soul of the old series and injects some much needed modern nuiances such as the swoop ability. Yes the AI can be fickle but if searchers were as keen as reviewers seem to shout about there would be quite a few broken controllers. Gamers have plenty of options to keep them busy and feel the pinch of nostalgia. I'm happy with the outcome and would fully support Eidos continuing the series. Expand

My gripes - Town is too linear. I would like a bit more openness and the ability to travel across the town districts in an open world setting. Not a big fan of the loading screen moving between districts.
Also while Garret has a decent arsenal, the use of much of it feels a bit too scripted and somewhat limited. for example Rope arrows are cool but I rarely find a "designated" place to use them. more of an open world could fix that.

Other then that I really like it. I like slower paced strategy stealthy games like this anyway . Also I have never played the earlier Thief games so I didnt have any preconceived ideas of how I thought this game should be..

This game is not for old thief fans. The level design is lackluster the sound design is off and there's a lack of good humour and a good story. But, for people like me who want to get into a true stealth game that looks down on combat, then this is for you.
Im only giving it a 9 due to personal preferences its actually a 7

What I did like the original thief games was the actual stealing - being able to go into people's houses and grab stuff, pickpocket passerbys, etc. But if I remember correctly, there hasn't really been that many opportunities to do so, as the games quickly devolved into crawling steampunk ruins and killing some robots. Forgive me, it has been years since I played those games.

So the new thief kinda delivered more of what I liked about the original games - the ability to explore the city at my own pace, loot houses, pickpocket, etc. I like the city design, it is rather complex with different levels from the sewers to streets to upper levels. Plenty of stuff to explore. I like this aspect of the game.

After a while I discovered that the F - focus mode lets me see loot, interactive points, etc, and it kinda ruined a lot of freeform looting experience. The game degenerated into running around and mashing F. There's no reason to look at anything in the environment, unless it is glowing blue.

Overall, I liked the game, it has decent voice acting, good localization into Russian, although I never had much hope in the story of thief games - I know that after a while it will turn into a steampunk dungeon crawl, and sure enough, chapters 3 and 4 were rather linear delving into ancient dungeons and towers.

Many people mention terrible AI, and I have to agree, playing on the 2nd "Thief" difficulty, the AI seems deaf, dumb and blind - I can walk, shoot arrows 5 feet away from the enemy, and they will not hear me. I can stand 5 feet in front of an enemy in the shadows and they won't see me. I can knock out one of 2 patrolling guards, and the 2nd one will never wander where his buddy went.

Overall, the game is good - graphics are fantastic, and performance is very good when running low settings on a 3 year old rig.

Graphics are decent, but the main atmosphere comes from the sound, combined with the stealth tension.
The use of sound in this game is awesome.
I had hoped for a more open world experience though. There's alot of transitions between maps, and it kind of breaks the tension.
There's a good number of puzzles (mainly to obtain safe combinations), and most are straightforward.
But a couple of them are actually quite brilliant.
Despite a fair amount of side missions, the game feels rather linear. Mainly because of lack of effort to actually make side missions challenging. Most are 'go to this place, and clean it out'.

Despite the flaws, this game has kept me entertained for many hours.
It's not a sequel, but more of a re-boot. And as such, I expect to see more games in the franchise.
If they put a little more effort into the game World, the story and side missions, it could revitalize the Thief franchise greatly.

But as of now, it's nothing big, but holds potential.
    Nevertheless, it's an enjoyable game.

The story is a bit linear with regards to how the objectives can be completed, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The levels lack a bit of variety though.

The animations and mechanics of sneaking and thieving are done well and satisfying.

I have played every Thief game. This one is the worst... of a very fine lineage. It does some things quite differently. But the core gameplay is finding routes and timing that get you through your quest to loot a deep and very troubled world. Exploration with risks.

I find weird complaints when people talk about the game. "There's no JUMPING"... well... there's no missing a jump. Unless it's one of the rare ones that requires a run-up. The game tells you if you're able to jump to the ledge you're facing, and you hit the button to go there. It's not a platformer, and that's fine. 90% of the time, in the original trilogy, you were just mantling up onto things. Actually jumping mostly just got you noticed, quickly.

There's a chase sequence... that doesn't actually mean you were noticed by anyone. It's bookended by cutscenes, and mostly serves to get you from one area to the next in a sort of mad dash action sequence. I wasn't fond of it, but mostly because it's so alien to the way the rest of the game is played. Then I figured out there wasn't any loot in it, and the goal was to get it over with ASAP... so it wasn't too bad then.

I felt like a lot of the tools at my disposal were incredibly pointless. Choke arrows, mostly. It's a ranged blast of pepper spray and it ticks off the recipient. That's not horribly valuable for any playstyle I'm aware of. The flashbangs were a little more useful, similar to their anti-zombie use in the old games. But not aimable. Then again, you can't blind yourself with them, so... it's a tradeoff.

Two boss fights in the game. One clearly built to be fought. The other clearly built to be stealthed. No real complaints about either, to be honest. Although the first would be... ludicrously difficult to be pacifist in. It's also possible to one-shot the enemy. So some tactics work better than others depending on the situation.

One really interesting thing included... is a leaderboard for extra difficulty settings. Purely meta bragging rights, but I think that's what technology is for. You can choose customized difficulty settings to force you to play the game the way you want. I suspect some of them are technically impossible when taken together. The amazing thing to me is... you don't have to play the game through once to unlock it. It's just there.

End of the day... according to steam, I spent about 57 hours on it. I've replayed a few levels I quite enjoyed. And if my #1 complaint is that it's not long enough... and it's clearly kept me engrossed for that long? That's quite good. I would be quite happy to play a sequel of this. Perhaps with larger playgrounds between plot-related choke points and one-way passages. One can hope.

So far from my experience, the storyline is promising and the stealing methods remind me a bit of Skyrim and the Thieves Guild. I am enjoying the gameplay. I have not played the original Thief games, but I do have them on my Steam. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why I'm not currently **** about this game being "so horrible".

Take this game for what it is. Combat is not really a part of how you play. Get caught, run like hell! The guards actually pay attention unlike how Assassin's Creed guard see you and walk away. These guards...if they see you...WILL go after you. With a lack of weapons, you run and hide. Once hidden, they don't give up immediately. Even lightning flashing can expose you while you’re hiding in a cabinet.

This game is about strategy and cunning. You need to pool your resources to purchase the correct equipment and spend your points wisely. Some break ins at random locations yield more information about another possible target. This game is all about finding everything you can and taking your time.

Guards in Thief are not dumb. If you make a noise they will come looking and they’ll call out to other guards to look too. Depending on how much noise you make, the longer they will look. They will light torches to expose you easier. Make too much noise any you are found. You also can’t just run past them like other games. They will instantly know you are present and come after you. That is a welcome change.

This game has a steady storyline with a game play meant for the patient not the hasty or bloodthirsty. I do recommend you purchase this game. If you think the reviews are too bad currently, I encourage you to wait them out. It's only the first 36 hours of release. When has a brand new game ever been releases without issues or criticism?

In the end, this game is a breath of fresh air from all the combat games like Skyrim, World of Warcraft, Assassin's Creed and so on. Do not purchase this game with the mindset of action packed escape scenes like AC or major combat like Skyrim. This game stands alone from them. The point is...don't get caught. Patience is a virtue.

I applaud Edios for making this a 1st person game. You do go 3rd person while climbing, but while creeping around you are in 1st person. It feels more realistic than having extra godlike vision.

Thief is not meant to be even close to Dishonored in gameplay. While Thief and Dishonored share similar atmospheres. Dishonored was sort of like a Dark Assassin's Creed, but I didn't see people complaining about. You had to plan your assassinations out. In Thief combat is not really an option and almost non-existent...unless you want your guts flying across the Marketplace. This game is all about stealth. In my opinion Dishonored and Thief are not comparable.

Also...don't EVER play on Rogue difficulty. Start with Thief...unless you’re a 12 year old, but this game is rated M so I hope there are none. Given that there are some sexual scenes, no one under 16 should play this in my opinion.

I give this game 8/10 currently.

Negative points include glitches and sometimes tricky key mashing to figure out how to get to the next pipe/ladder/etc.

Edios and Steam will have some glitches resolved shortly I'm sure. If not...oh well. Edios might have other more pressing projects than Thief glitch fix at the moment. I would wait for everything to be ironed out, but I can't stop playing. I've always wanted to be the kind of person who pulls heists without any weapons in real life...so I've kinda found my calling in this game.

TL;DR This is a stealth and patience game requiring strategy, not combat. While it has some glitches, none are game breaking. Guards are alert and not stupid. This game is a lot of fun for someone looking for something different.

Yes this game has issues, go find me a game without them, but this game is very enjoyable, and I would highly recommend it to anyone but the original fans of the franchise. Comparing this game to the originals is just idiotic, don't know if you have noticed but the last Thief game was released ten years ago. The demographic for gamers since then, a lot, an awful lot. Eidos Montreal weren't trying to impress the original fans, they were trying to impress people who weren't already a fan of the franchise and get those people into stealth games, and this game is one hell of a stealth game.

It is truly an amazing stealth game, and if you are a fan of them then I highly recommend it, the maps in the game could certainly be a little more open for me, but I can overlook this easily, they weren't too impossibly linear, and they are certainly not worth comparing to a Call of Duty campaign.

The difficulty customization is AMAZING. You literally cannot say that this game is too easy, if you think that then you can make it as hard as you like, without a problem. Imo, the three pre built difficulties were a little easy for my taste so I do recommend customising your own experience and making some of the aspects of the game more difficult before playing.

The world built in Thief is great. The impression I got of the city is that the city is awful, a dirty and filthy place, and yes the people living there are horrible people, doing what they do just to keep going in life.

As for the PC port, truly excellent. Absolutely no complaints, runs buttery smooth and has an excellent range of graphics options. It looks beautiful and has some amazing lighting effects.

With some doubtfull anticipation I booted up the game on my trusty game pc. Only to be confused; why did people say this was bad or why doesn't it look like the old games. The most hatefull review I read came from Kotaku and it was a rant of garbage based upon a pre-release version, now do not get me wrong, this game has some minor problems.

    The good:

    - A city hub
    - Faster movement than the previous games
    - An immersive world, with mystery, corruption and adventure.
-intense gameplay, running around on rooftoops, lockpicking, going for the big loot.
    - You are worthless in a fight ( I'll explain in a second.)

    The bad:
    - Textures seem bland sometimes, even on ultra settings.
    - some conversations seem to loop, I heard a guard say: "ya get the noose", 4 times in a row.
    - AI is unpredictable, in some situations it works in some it miserably fails.
    - slow sneaking looks really strange. (feet move faster than your speed, looks like moonwalking.)

Like I said before, Garret is a terrible fighter, he has no trouble with a one on one fight, but more than one and its better to run as fast as you can.

The gameplay itself is what I expected of a Thief game, lots of sneaking and lots of stealing. The side missions are done very well and the upgrades in the game are actually usefull.

The AI can sometimes glitch out, in one situation the guard got stuck in his routine, making him spin around at speed of a tornado, caught in a vortex,in a fan.

But even if the AI fails at some things, there are some cool mechanics at play as well. For instance speed affects a lot of things, if you hastly try to pick a lock, guards can hear you. Running up a wall instead of climbing up via crates, makes more sound.
People ussually leave you alone, unless you: shoot your bow in plain sight or break something, they will call out for the guard and point them towards your last seen location and direction where you were heading. Missions are varied and require thought to proceed. your take on a situation can define everything about the mission.

The city is your mission hub, it isn't as free as Assassin's Creed, but it is fun to look for ways up or down and into buildings.

A lot of people are complaining about windows closing behind you, but actually it does not bother me that much.

The map can be a hassle to use, it does its work, but it does not show things suchas acces points to other districts and this can be quite annoying and it took me several minutes to look for an entrance to another district.

The story is quite standard, but does give a red line through the game and has it's exciting moments.

    Conclusion:

It's nowhere near a 60 bucks game, but it's far from bad. The game fits nicely in the Thief series and does a great job immersing you in another world. Some things could have been better, but looks past these things and you'll find a really fun game.

Thief isn't easy to judge and having multiple high level designer leaving the project during development leaves you always suspicious and with a lot of ???.
As a Thief game it fails in story, casualisation, gameplay limitations like arrows, sound etc.
As a random stealth game, it works and you can have fun. But the story is still bad. And it's a proper PC port, lots of options, useful

First thing said: I really hate to give a game any rating whatsoever because numbers mostly are totally arbitrary and reviews are never totally objective.
So here is my absolute subjective critics: I like the game and the fact that it got the same metascore as Call of Duty: Ghosts just boggles my mind as even months after release Ghost is simply unplayable on the PC for a lot of people

Thief on the other hand is fully playable with admittingly some bugs in sound design and movement system here and there but the amount of control given to the player over his personal game experience is just awesome, especially when it comes to game difficulty. I don't get it why most reviewers seem to totally ignore that as personally I can't name a single modern AAA title that gives you the customizabilty Thief gives you.
Are you unhappy with the focus mechanics? Fine: just cut them out of the game entirely. Combat too easy? Fine: adjust it so that Garret dies after a single hit or even make you lose as soon as you are spotted.
There is only one major negative that they won't be able to fix with patches I fear. The level design. I played the original games back then and I have to admit that most of the levels are too small. Especially the side missions. The main missions on the other hand, while still too small, generally offer you 3 different types to approach them. Usually there is the direct way which almost certainly means you will be discorvered more than once and have to fight your way out. If you play it that way, It's your own fault. The devs made the combat mechanics as clunky as they are for a reason: Garret is not supposed to be good at melee combat - he is a thief, not an assassin. It's not Dishonored after all. It's still nice that they let you have that choice but thankfully in most missions there are at leat two if not more different ways. You can ghost yourself through if you want - it's totally possible but usually that means you'll miss a lot of shineys on the way or you can knock out basically everyone around and use the environment to your advantage to split groups of guards to take them out seperatly. Based on the difficulty you set at the beginning this can get very challenging, especially when there are civilians around.
Basically you can play Thief pretty much the way you want to play it but it definitely rewards a stealthy and thoughtful approach. If you are not a patient person than this game can be very frustrating. Even the open world being less open than for example in Deadly Shadows where you got that climbing gear at some point, I pretty much appreciate as it makes the open world more challenging to get around. And as the main story progresses new areas of The City become available while the parts that became familiar to this point slightly change. Suddenly there are guards where there weren't any before or their pathes and behavior changed slightly. It keeps navigating The City challenging.
So far to mechanics and game design bu what about story? Is it any good? Well that's rather subjective. I don't think it is a bad story. It has some rather unexpected twists here and there and, in my opinion, becomes more and more interesting the further you get. And, as in the previous titles it is packed full with hidden lore in terms of letters and segments of books. Animations and voice acting is really good but as I mentioned earlier the sound design is a bit buggy at times. In cutscenes voices often are too quiet while at other times there are voices appearing out of nowhere at incredible high levels that they make you jump as they appear to be right next to you (usually when you are concentrated on sneaking around).
Visuals on the other hand are quite good overall. At least in the PC version. Only textures are disturbing me as they appear to be rather low res in some places.

That all said: It's a solid stealth game with some issues that I find primarily originated in the console versions. Almost everything about this game could have been better if they decided to make it PC only especially when it comes to the mission and level scale as consoles hugely limit developers in that regard

Picking locks, scanning your environments, thinking of a way to stealth through, etc are really cool but as I said it has flaws. I'm giving an 8 because it was awesome and not in another way. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who have played Dishonored and liked it really much. Expand

I think the game is great. It certainly has it's issues, but none of them really break the games experience to me.

It has some technical issues. The AI is a little bit broken. Everyone seems to be complaining about how bad the AI is, I haven't had to many issues with it. A guard got stuck on a door once or twice but it wasn't gamebreaking. Also, some of the voice acting isn't properly

A guard got stuck on a door once or twice but it wasn't gamebreaking. Also, some of the voice acting isn't properly normalized, which is annoying but again, not gamebreaking.

The stealth in this game is really well flushed out. It's satisfying to sneak around the place and there are some really good mechanics. Like the light/dark indicator or the swoop ability.

I also thought the atmosphere was really nice. The fog looks amazing and the detail in the world is astonishing. The game just oozes atmosphere with it's dark and gloomy graphics style.

The game seems to have a fairly bad reputation due to average and even negative reviews. I don't really know why this is. I mean, surely there are some people that dislike it because it's nothing like the original Thief or they were expecting things like the weapon variety Dishonored had.

Which brings me to a point which annoyed me the most, stop comparing this to Dishonored. The two are completely different games. In some way similar but mostly not. Like combat. This is well done in Dishonored but not in Thief. Eidos deliberately didn't make the combat interesting since Thief is a game that focuses on stealth, that means there should be no to minimal combat involved.

All in all, Thief is an enjoyable experience. It has it's problems, but none of them are gamebreaking and almost all of them are forgivable when you look at how good the rest of the game is. Like the atmosphere and stealth.

Never played a Thief game before first impressions is that the game is a little empty but in the missions on master does make you sneak around to pick safes that can be right by sleeping guards. Overall I don't think it is a bad game I have played worse. Worth picking up and giving it a play through at some point.

This new Thief does a lot things right but can still be rather clumsy at times. Definitely worth trying, though. [Issue #240]
