This is a great game. I have heard so many bad reviews, mostly from people who can't appreciate the genre, or are more into action games than stealth games. This IS a stealth game from it's core to every element, so don't go buying the game if you are more a FPS gamer and then complain about where is the combat, the game is too slow etc.

The game's graphics are fascinating, every detail is made, althougg sometimes the character animation is far from perfect, but all the environment design puts up to it.
All in all it has a great mood, gameplay, graphics and a fair storyline.

I laugh every time some excited moron takes it personally and pukes things like "It's a mess! Who says it's a great game is a liar!!" or to the other end of the spectrum "don't listen those haters, the game is a gem!", and the best are always those who haven't grasped the basics of democracy with pearls like "I was going to give it a 8, but I go with a 10 because the average is too low!".I laugh every time some excited moron takes it personally and pukes things like "It's a mess! This bunch of various killjoys aside, the analysis is, as always, subjective. The plot is plain and uninteresting, the characters forgettable, the sound system is dumbed down and the levels are more linear and cutted by loading times. It's all true, and there are other little things like the rope arrow that you can shoot only in some spots, and the moss arrow that's gone for good, and the map is a mess, and away with all that. Yes, that's sadly real.
    BUT
As a Thief series veteran, and Dark Mode contributer, my opinion is that this fourth installment is immersive like very few before it. The sensation of being a thief is here, crystal and sharp like a knife. The atmosphere, grim and gothic, the sense of persistent danger, it's all here. The slow progress from a dark corner to another, the silent approaching to the unwary guard, the hands taking what is yours to soon become mine, the thieving essence is still there, and better than before.
I believe Thief is not a perfect game. It suffers of many weak points: plot and level design the ugliest of them. Still, if you can put them aside, you will spend 20 hours like a real thief.

If you have never played the earlier Thief games and you like simple gameplay, few choices and a low budget plot you may enjoy this game. However if you have played and enjoyed the earlier games you will feel outraged, cheated and generally very disappointed. Either way aim to pay no more than at the most 50% of its retail price.

All things considered, a very good and challenging game.

I would give Thief 8.5/10, but I will round up to 9 as this game has been on the receiving end of some unfair criticism. I'm a great believer in taking games at face value, games shouldn't be criticised for not being something that another game is. The first issue is the complaint of linearity, which is not strictly true. Yes Thief is restricting in a way that you can't go anywhere like you could in an open world game, however you are free to roam the city as you please, there are side jobs to be done, collectibles to find. Areas of the city are complex and dark, it is difficult to find your bearings at first and rewarding to find hidden areas and swoop across the rooftops above the unsuspecting guards below. Thief is not as linear as some suggest.

The biggest part of what makes Thief such a good game is the gameplay. Some players have grumbled about the game being only first person view, which I was initially skeptical of. However you see the world through Garret's eyes, the player has to use their eyes and ears to get by. You cant see whats behind you, you have to physically turn the character around and that makes Thief much more immersive and challenging. There is no map or radar with little dots and cones of vision, players have to plan routes and there are multiple ingenious ways of getting around the city. Garret's main tool is his bow, which is only really a weapon is desperate circumstances, you will use the bow to fire rope arrows, blunt arrows to create distractions and water arrows to put out distant torches for example.

Combat does get criticised for being difficult, which should really be expected. Garret wears dark leather clothing, not steel breastplate. Garret doesn't carry swords around. The developers cannot be faulted, they really made the objective of the game clear. You are a thief, not an assassin, Garret makes clear in the opening of the game that he disapproves of killing guards without reason. The objective is to be unseen. and intelligent play is thoroughly rewarding. Brute force and foolhardiness gets punished, and for me that is a plus for Thief.

    A worthwhile purchase.

What people say is bad :
    1. Restricted movement - ok, it is not consistent, but once you get the hang of it it becomes natural. It could be a bit less constraining (falling off ledges etc.) but it's far from breaking the experience.

    2. Garrets voice is so baaad - ... really ? Really ? I feel exactly like playing the first Thief and for me vice acting is great (could be better, script maybe could be better), it's far from the atrocity described in the review and exactly what I would expect from the game. Keeps me immersed, that's it.

    3. You can steal everything ... and it's so baad - well guess what, you're a thief in this game, so of course you can steal and evaluate what you steal. You don't have to steal everything, yeah ? It's freedom. Would it be better if you could steal only the high profile items ? Noo, then people would complain that it's too restrictive ...

    4. Story and characters are lame - well better than in any other game in the series, not as good as Uncharted or The Last Of Us, but come on, it's good enough to get you through the game immersed.

Anyway, I was expecting an utter piece of **** after reading the reviews, but I'm surprised. The game is good, as good as I would expect from the trailers. I think reviewers in media are just **** and have way to high expectations.

    Why no one mentions :
    - Great graphics (technical side) - shadows, light, rain, damn it's a pretty game and it runs great on PC. Everything maxed out, consistent 60FPS on a 3 year old ring, not bad ehh? Read that in any review?

    - Sticking to the original with heavy atmosphere and art style - I've read somewhere that art style and vibe are uninspired ... what the hell was the reviewer smoking, I don't know.

    - Great atmospheric music and sound design - again, no one seems to mention that ?

    - Plays like a Thief game ... YES ! in a good way : )

Anyway, If you give this game a go, and you're not expecting it to be "the best game ever, like ever !" then you'll have a great time. Any as for reviewers, ok there are opinions, but giving it 4/10 ... really ? Because you don't like Garrets voice or characters ? or because you can't fall of every ledge ? Really ? Losing respect for reviewers I kept for years in high regard.

"Thief" is an alright game but seems to be a reboot rather than a continuation of the original series both in 'lore' and game-play. If you've never played any other of the games in the series you may enjoy this one but, if you have, you will probably find the newest incarnation of the Thief series rather vapid.

    Bottom line
The overuse of scripted events ruins the game.

I've played thief since I the original, and I can honestly say, the atmosphere feels just the same as it ever did, and the graphics are simply breathtaking. I don't really understand the negativity that the game is receiving from certain quarters. It isn't linear, it is possible to ghost levels, the weapons behave as they ever did (oh, except of the fact that the magical growing moss arrows are gone.) You can't jump, and this is the first time I've ever thought to just turn the music off in a game, because it was incongruous and just served to take me out of the moment, but other than that, I'm pretty much blown away by the game. I loved the original thief games, and perhaps I'm looking at this through rose tinted spectacles because I haven't played the predecessors since I was a kid, but although it's bleak and dark and grey, it's glorious.
I'm sorry for those of you who feel the need to complain about button mashing load sections, but it took me nine hours of gameplay to realise that that's what was going on. Lock picking feels more plausible than it ever has in a game. I would have loved to have seen a more complex safe cracking scenario (glass against the safe, listening to the mechanism?) but I certainly haven't found any of the thievery mundane.
I haven't fought much; I tend to reload every time I'm seen by anyone (which has happened a lot), but I have ran around the city killing things just to play with that aspect of the game engine, and I have loved every minute of it. Robin hood style arrow cam when you take a guard full on in the face, 3rd person perspective drop takedowns, blackjackings, gagging beards and dogs; what's not to love?
Yeah, you'll probably notice if you click that this is the first time I've written a review, and that should tell you a lot. I hadn't read any reviews of this game prior to purchasing it, and I'm really glad I didn't, because I probably would have been hesitant to purchase. This is the first time I've come off an eight hour playing session and thought, 'you know what? I'm going to go and write a review of that game.'
Caveats - play on the hardest setting and turn off focus mode - I did that instinctively, because I wanted the game to be a challenge, (and I've ended up having to search for help on line for a few of the more puzzling set pieces.)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a big fan of the Thief/Dark Project franchise. Those games are part the reasons why I'm studying video game creation. Everything in those games are amazing: the dark ambiance they put you in, like if you are a master of the shadow, the greed you have by trying to get 100% of the loot, the fun you have by creating a diversion to escape from the guards... They force you to think about every possible strategy to enter a building and discover every secrets. So far I've finished the Thief serie a multiple of times, a 100% complete without getting spotted or having to knock out anyone, and I was very happy when I learned that Thief 3 would have a sequel. Thief 4 was very fun to play, and the graphics were amazing, but a few things were missing, and I hope to see those things in a Thief 5. Here is my full review of Thief 4, playing on Master difficulty, ghost gameplay...

    Visuals/Sounds/Ambiance:
The graphics are amazing. There is enough polygons on characters so that we don't see much of their edges. The clothes they wear, the weapons they have, everything is well-made. The streets look very realistic. They don't seem empty at all. They are full of small things like boxes, barrels, vases, merchant stalls, carts and rubbish. The textures are also great. You can see that a lot of work as been put into those. The leather looks rough and worn, the velvet looks soft and expensive, the stones and wooden planks look dirty and cold, and you can even see skin pores on characters! The lights and shadows that help you across the levels are very well used. Not too much shadows to make it easy to travel, and not too much light that would seem overdone. Torches, street lamps, oil lamps and "primal effect" do a really good job to create the mood. The music is great as well. I was very surprised to hear dubstep, but I found it a good idea. I also liked the fact that the music change drastically when you are spotted. Good job

    Mechanics/Missions:
The mechanics were very easy to understand. You have the same weapons from before and the same way to move without being seen. There's one thing that really annoyed me, you cannot jump!!! You can't ask me to play a first person game without being able to jump. Sometime a jump can save your life... I still had the feeling that people playing the predatory way were more rewarded than people playing the rightful way. There was some loots almost inaccessible unless by knocking out guards, either because you had to be in the lights for too long or because guards from very far could see you... a bug maybe? There is also the part were you slip yourself between planks and crates by holding E. In the middle of the transition, you have to press E very fast to move a plank. I didn't understood what was the utility of this action in the gameplay, maybe if the player could damage his health by not pressing E fast enough would be better. I also found the missions easy. To enter the building, you have 3 choices: Front door, opened window or the ventilation grid. In the other Thief games, you could use the sewers, find multiple secret panels, use underground ways and even use the fireplace. Usually, there is so many ways to go to an objective that you don't usually escape by the way you went in. There was also not enough civilians or guards, it was so easy to move that I always though that something would jump from behind.

    The narrative:
The narrative is what deceived me in this game. I was very eager to see Viktoria again. She is a major character of the main story, and in Thief 3, it looked almost as if you would see her again. She took your eye for Constantine in Thief 1 and she saved you from father Karras in Thief 2. I though that she would be in Thief 4, but nope. She has to be in Thief 5. She brings so much mysteries in Garrett's world. I was also very surprise that they was no mention of Garrett's mechanical eye that replaced the one that Viktoria took. Didn't Constantine whispered in Garrett's mind that he would come back to take the other one? When Garrett steals from a museum in Thief 3, he find his lost eye on a statue and when you approach it, you can hear Constantine voice...At least Basso was still there.

In conclusion: Thief 4 is amazing regarding the graphics and the ambiance, but the mission are too shorts, too easy and had the felling that there was only one way to do them, regardless of wanting to be detected or not. The fact that there was only 2 characters from the prequels was very deceiving. I'm still going to play Thief 4 a second time to try to finish it at 100%, but I will not have as much fun as with Thief 1, 2 or 3. I hope there will be a Thief 5, with the real sequel, with Viktoria, maybe with Keepers or with Constantine, or with the Lost city for a fourth time. :)

Graphics are decent, but the main atmosphere comes from the sound, combined with the stealth tension.
The use of sound in this game is awesome.
I had hoped for a more open world experience though. There's alot of transitions between maps, and it kind of breaks the tension.
There's a good number of puzzles (mainly to obtain safe combinations), and most are straightforward.
But a couple of them are actually quite brilliant.
Despite a fair amount of side missions, the game feels rather linear. Mainly because of lack of effort to actually make side missions challenging. Most are 'go to this place, and clean it out'.

Despite the flaws, this game has kept me entertained for many hours.
It's not a sequel, but more of a re-boot. And as such, I expect to see more games in the franchise.
If they put a little more effort into the game World, the story and side missions, it could revitalize the Thief franchise greatly.

But as of now, it's nothing big, but holds potential.
    Nevertheless, it's an enjoyable game.

First of all this isn’t much of a pure stealth game, it’s a jack of all trades but king of none. Side missions? You will bore yourself to death going back and forth in the city - through loading times and places you’ve been to 20 times before - only to get a few forks worth 2 gold each in a couldn’t be smaller apartment where there isnt a single soul (absolutely zero stealth involved). That “open-ended” part of the game feels like a complete abortion of an elder’s scrolls game.

Then quite often this game wants to be a puzzle game a la Myst, but again it just feels like an abortion of it. It’s more like Thief 4: find the randomly/stupidly placed switch and voila, “puzzle” solved (as a side note, turning off focus will make you want to kill yourself because of how utterly random the switch finding trash is). What the hell were they thinking including that in the game? The puzzles should be stealth related: how to get through areas, guards, etc. but there’s actually not much of that. It should be very central to the game yet you end up spending a lot more of your time doing something else, even in story related missions.

And quite a lot of that something else is “go forward in a narrow corridor” pseudo movie garbage with a lot of scripted stuff, if not outright interactive animations or boring mini games. Blatant case of idiots thinking they’re good game designers just because they use what they learned in their graphics/animation design classes as much as they can. If I want to see a f****** movie I’m gonna go rent an actual one… but I want to play an actual game, not a “tag along for the ride mr. 12 year old ADD console casutard” kind of game. And then there’s the animations for picking up stuff and disabling guards… who with an IQ over 80 can actually think this adds anything to the game? Not only is it a gigantic waste of time but it can actually get you out of shadows and expose you (the item pickup animation) or make you waste precious time after disabling a guard (forces you to stand there like a retard when you’re dying to go hide because you know there’s another guard coming). Overall a lot of the design decisions are just plain retarded.

On the technical side of things, almost everything is subpar except for graphic quality:

Sound rendering: this is arguably the worst aspect of this game. If there’s a game type that needs good sound it’s a stealth one but in thief… sounds often go straight through roofs/floors and the angle/distance from which they come is vague at best (especially distance). I’ve often gone wtf realizing a guy I thought was very close to me was actually 30 feet away or vice-versa, if not on a whole different floor (just lol). I think every first person game I ever played has better sound rendering than thief.

Physics: overall it feels a bit sloppy which is bad for a game in which accurate control over your character is important, not to mention the lack of freedom (can’t jump and all that other nonsense).

Stealth system: it’s bad on many levels.
    - Light is all or nothing with no in between. It’s very simplistic and it contributes to the second point.
    - As a whole it feels rather random, I’ve been spotted from 10 feet in very dark places not moving at all… and at times I’ve gotten away with stuff/mistakes that I thought would get me spotted for sure (master difficulty). I’ve gone almost through the whole game and I still have little confidence in what I can and can’t do. Other thief games gave you a lot of confidence and in fact even most shooters are a lot better. System as a whole is just bad.
    - Footsteps, they have pretty much thrown that aspect of the game to the curb, 95% of the time you won’t give a f*** what surface you’re on since it doesn’t make any difference, as long as you avoid specific spots (glass and water) which are not very common at all. There are no moss arrows and frankly you don’t need them, that’s how much they cared.

Lastly, it is a console abortion of a PC game with the typical symptoms: can’t bind anything, limited savegames and hold this button for 0.5 second please. For example, flash bombs are bound to 9… not exactly handy when you want to get out of a sticky situation. Sooner or later you’ll hit 0 instead of 9 trying to be quick and end up with a bottle in your hand… and a sword in your face.

I’m not even sure you should wait for a discount, this is pretty much diablo 3/total war rome 2 kinda stuff: another great series getting annihilated by a game that not only isnt as good as the previous ones, but isnt even objectively average.

The last two story missions however falls short and makes you realize that how uninvested you are in the story itself and the ending is on par with the pre-dlc fix of Mass Effect 3.

But it has many good qualities, if however you have yet to purchase / play Dishonored I would recommend that instead. There you can stealth and / or assassinate to your hearts content with a storyline that is much better.

The best part of the games however, was the stealth missions, which is what the whole game of Thief is!
The use of the dualshock4 made me cry with joy for 19 days! Why? Because it was just a sensational idea and one that, in a dark room, made the entire game come to life! This also aids the extraordinary detail of the entire game and, ultimately, makes for a wonderfully involved game!

Here's what the game is actually about: You are put in tiny sections where you basically have to get from A to B. Which are like 20 meters apart usually so far.
The game doesn't even let you check out the environment to seek different ways to get past the obstacles to reach your goal because you can't properly move freely. You can't even jump yourself. Try jumping over from one building

No what about the thieving part? Well, since it's not hard or tactical to reach your price there's no fun in getting it in the first place. Besides that you'll spend a lot of time picking up completely useless garbage to reach some stupid achievements like finding all the garbage in a certain level.

I have to make the comparison with Dishonored here as it sure attracts the same audience, and it sure looks a lot alike.
Take Dishonored, replace the controls with really crappy ones, change the levels so you have as much choice as you'd have in Crash Bandicoot - voila. Now make the characters and the story as boring as it can get: You have Thief.

The animations and mechanics of sneaking and thieving are done well and satisfying.

This is a quality game, but not all will appreciate it.

I haven't a been a Thief fan, but after I've played this reboot I became one. The stealth is perfect, A.I. is not as dumb as different game magazines say. It's far more clever. The only game drawback is engine and graphics. It's just a usual UE3, but it's a bit unoptimised and laggy. This is the only bad thing I noticed playing it.
So, if you like stealth games, this one is "must have", imo.

It is true, this game is very much like Dishonored, it's a stealth game, and there seems to be a disease that has caused many people to die, resulting in a very 'dark' story. However, it fails miserably to remake the game, or even come close to it.

There seems to be a backstory to it, but since this is my first 'thief' game, I don't know if it does, and even if it did, I don't know it.

What I don't like about this game is the controls, and I don't mean the buttons which are mapped to my keyboard, I mean the lack of freedom, in controls. For example, the routes you take are very limited, and even if you want to do something else, which you think will be smarter, let's say climb to the other roof and sneak past the enemy, if the developers didn't think of it, you can't do it. This is unlike Dishonored, which gives you the freedom to climb to any roof you want to, climb *almost* every object in the game, and control, almost again, everything you do in this game.

For Thief, most of the things you do are decided by the developers, what objects you climb, and what path you take. Although they try to tell you that you a CAN do whatever you want, kill or sneak past the enemy, it hasn't really proved that freedom of choice was it's objective when creating the game. This has caused the game to feel rather linear, and at times, boring.

This game is fun, don't get me wrong, if you like stealth games and don't mind mainstream storylines (don't expect any Bioshock or Dishonored), then this game is good for you. However, if you like deep storylines, with freedom of movement and decisions, then this game is not for you.

To complete this, the developers of this game have made it a fun game, if only considering the aspect of 'Stealth', but have failed to make it fun, if one is not only looking for stealth, but for other aspects of a game too.

Please note that I am reviewing this reboot as its own game. I have never played any of the original "Thief" games so you will not find a comparison here. My review will be based solely on my experience with this version of Thief.

Ever since I first heard of Thief I was excited. I am a huge stealth-fan and I never got around to playing the original Thief-games, so this was a great opportunity for me and other newcomers to jump right into this iconic stealth series... and I am very glad that I did. Thief is a beautiful game and a unique stealth experience with smooth gameplay and lots of variety in your approach on things. Simply a superb game that is unfortunately brought down by critics and die-hards fan who expected something that would have stuck more to the "original recipe".

    The Good:
    · Smooth controls: climbing low obstacles, peeking around corners to get a better look at your environment, swooping from shadow to shadow... It all feels incredibly smooth, especially for a stealth game. If you have ever played Dishonored, just imagine something like that without magic and a more realistic approach.
    · Money money money: getting your gold-greedy paws around precious items such as common goblets and letter openers among countless others and more unique collectable items is incredibly fun and satisfying. This loot is generally realistically spread, meaning no golden goblets will be found on the streets and that jewelry will mostly be found in stores or houses. I personally think this encouraged me to explore different area's to find different kind of loot.
    · Phenomenal stealth gameplay: there are no stealth games this well-crafted in my recent memory. Your approach may depend on the situation, your goal or the difficulty (which is geniously customizable to enjoy the game as hard or as simple as you'd like). You can sneak past every guard, knock them all out, just steal all their money (heheh), or you can distract guards by firing arrows, putting out fires, throwing empty bottles etc. It feels fresh and addictive and completely different with every level or replay.

    The Bad:
    · AI: there's dumb AI and there's blind AI. I'd say the AI isn't necessarily dumb (birds and dogs will alert guards and guard frequently and correctly patrol the area) but the AI is blind as f*ck. Alright, you're in the shadows, but at times you can literally walk in front of guards and they'll keep their eyes fixed on you, but they won't react. This idiocy encouraged me to stay as far away from guars as possible, but I'd prefer my AI a little bit more alert and responsive.
    · Pure stealth may not be for everyone: in games like Splinter Cell or Hitman you can either go in pure stealth without ever being noticed of going in a bit more fierce, killing every enemy in sight. You can obviously kill enemies with an arrow in between the enemy's eyes, but real action is avoided. The more stealthy you play, the more rewarding (both in-game and personally) and immersive the game will be, but poor in-game combat will put off almost everyone looking to cause some fuss.

    The Ugly:
    · Man this game is gorgeous. Amazing textures, immersive lighting, stunning character models, an atmospheric city and espacially Garrett's hands are detailed beyond belief. One of the most beautiful games in recent memory.

    Final Verdict:
    · Thief is not for everyone due to its imperfections, but for stealth-fans like myself this game is a must. It's the very best stealth has to offer and undoubtedly a game that will stick with you for a long time.

I didn't expect Thief to launch with Mantle (which it was supposed to) on the PC given the tremendous amount of bugs in the BF4 roll-out. Plus Mantle is now surely aimed more to boost performance for low-to-mid end hardware. On high end rigs, the gain is now minimal to none compared to DirectX.

I was very looking forward to this game since I enjoy "historically" plotted stealth games, but this title is surely a letdown.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Spoilers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its the small things that killed the game for me, examples:

    -garret voice sux.

-the girl is a annoying child.

-the claw is nothing more that a simple meat hook and that changes the entire game mechanic ? garret never thought of that before ?

-garret cant jump unless scripted ?

-garret cant blackjack people unless in the "focus mode" ?

-Unskipable animation of looking the corners of a window before trying to open it. Even if just went thru it and must go back, every single time...

-Pressing 'E' repeatedly to open a window ? is that suposed to make us feel like doing some effort ? god of war style of opening things in thief...

-at some point the guards entered in a loop saying the same phrase over and over again, like, conversation, 3 second pause, same conversation, 3 second pause, again, again...

-after entering the city i didn't go to the objective right away, i went exploring. Then i found the i need some kind of tool to get the screws of stuff around, what ? where do i get it ? cant find, ok, go to objective, ooh its sold here, ok, lets steal, get mission to rob a bank, right in the end, already inside the safe, another box thing says i must have yet another tool to cut wires... what ? there was no such thing in the npc selling stuff...

    - you are in a bank, you are in front of a counter, more like a table with some steel bars on top, there is an item you can steal at the other side of it... IF you were human, a mere lean foward and reach for it would do the trick since the steel bars are very widely spaced... you cant, and you cant jump on the table... to get the item that's right in front of you must go to the other side, in another room with a camera. The solution to this could be so simple, since your game mechanic sux that much, don't place items in such way that it casts a beam of light showing the poor job done in the game.

-oh i remember another, when you are opening a drawer, if the drawer is empty, garret right hand don't enter the scene, ok, but, if there is something in the drawer, the right hand appears before we see the content of the drawer, making it feels awkward.

-And in the beginning you need money to buy stuff, but, garret chooses to make a collection of the most valuable items ? i think i heard some guard saying that the mask would feed a lot of mouths for a year or something, but, no...

-Hes been away for so long, and don't remember anything, has powers ? his eye changed ? yet, shows little interrest in persuing awsers. Cant say more because i stop playing.

Dishonored is a much better successor to the thief series.

However, I myself have never played the original games. And that being said, I'm rather addicted to Thief 4. It's controls are easy grasp, and its movement mechanics are great for it's core purpose of being a stealth game. Physical conflict is something that is encouraged to be avoided, especially when there is more than one guard in the area, making the use of your tools and the shadows all the more fun. The story, while not a brilliant one, can still strike curiosity as you explore the city, read documents/newspapers that are lying around, and listen in on conversations.

That being said, I do feel a tad bit of dissappointment from what I was expecting upon hearing the announcement of the game. The maps are not quite as "open", and getting around some parts of the city are rather simplistic, not leaving much room for creativity in your movements. NPCs (not including guards) hardly interact or acknowledge you, and a lot of the apartment rooms you can break into on the streets never seem to have anyone at home, which, for me, breaks the tension that can keep you so immersed at times. Plus the "focus" ability, which can be incredibly handy from time to time, can still be used even when the focus meter has run dry, simply by repeatedly pressing the focus mode key. While this might not be a problem for some, it makes me feel dirty when I use it...

The game does have a few bugs, for example on ocassion sound levels change, making it hard to hear some conversation, or guards will ocassionally stop and spin in place for a minute or so. However there are already patches releasing to fix such issues, so the developers are at least staying on it.

Overall I do think this is a great game, even if it didn't meet my initial expectations.

Yes this game has issues, go find me a game without them, but this game is very enjoyable, and I would highly recommend it to anyone but the original fans of the franchise. Comparing this game to the originals is just idiotic, don't know if you have noticed but the last Thief game was released ten years ago. The demographic for gamers since then, a lot, an awful lot. Eidos Montreal weren't trying to impress the original fans, they were trying to impress people who weren't already a fan of the franchise and get those people into stealth games, and this game is one hell of a stealth game.

It is truly an amazing stealth game, and if you are a fan of them then I highly recommend it, the maps in the game could certainly be a little more open for me, but I can overlook this easily, they weren't too impossibly linear, and they are certainly not worth comparing to a Call of Duty campaign.

The difficulty customization is AMAZING. You literally cannot say that this game is too easy, if you think that then you can make it as hard as you like, without a problem. Imo, the three pre built difficulties were a little easy for my taste so I do recommend customising your own experience and making some of the aspects of the game more difficult before playing.

The world built in Thief is great. The impression I got of the city is that the city is awful, a dirty and filthy place, and yes the people living there are horrible people, doing what they do just to keep going in life.

As for the PC port, truly excellent. Absolutely no complaints, runs buttery smooth and has an excellent range of graphics options. It looks beautiful and has some amazing lighting effects.

The game is good, as good as the original games which i played to hell and back and replayed just recently in preparation for this one. I'll break it all down and discuss the parts people are concerned about.

FIRST: Many people are reviewing this game poorly due to not changing their settings to be like the old games. Before you start the game if you want a old school Thief experience then go into the Game & Hud settings and turn them all off. Then when choosing difficulty select custom and turn on No Focus at least, also set the difficulty to master, mid difficulty is actually closer AI wise to the originals but if you've played the originals then chances are your a better player in general now than you were back then. Also this is a true stealth game so you are expected to be sneaking everywhere not slaughtering on armies, it is not dishonored where it is fairly easy to brute force your way through a level, Thief games require a slower pace and thinking.

Rough edges: This game has a few rough edges but it is a really solid release with very few bugs and glitches, nothing game breaking. Some of the jumping movement can be buggy but you'll figure it out pretty quick (though looking at the reviews here there are some slow people around). All the previous Thief titles had and still have similar issues, people are just quick to forget.

AI: The AI is almost as good as the previous titles. It is missing the ability to recognized when something has changed after returning to an area and it doesn't stay alert, the previous games had the AI be unable to be knocked out after being on alert and they stayed alerted, while a little sad it doesn't take away too much from the game. Another change to the AI is the speed a guard will notice you, it is slower or faster depending on how 'hidden' you are. if you are in half light and shadow they will spot you fairly quick. if you are in full low light they will be a little slower. If you are in bight light they will see you almost straight away, this is actually an improvement over the spotting AI in the previous games though that is more my opinion.

Levels: The levels are crafted well and you always have several options and paths of overcoming obstacles just like in the previous games However with the "help" features turned on you have a constant guide to where you need to be making people follow that rather then making their own path giving the illusion of more linearity than there is so, TURN OFF THE OBJECTIVE MARKERS. Some obstacles within the levels have single solutions to get around but these are particular points within an entire level.

Story: The story is pretty good though it pretty much follows the same story as the older Thief games. The voice acting is good not great though I miss Garrets old voice. The side missions are a little bit less interesting but the levels are still fun, especially if you try for the additional objectives like "collect all the loot", "don't be seen" and so on.

This is not a thief, stop defiling established universes! The game is done qualitatively, but in such a way - who needs it? Developer interested in all the primary source? He knew what the universe is so appreciated Thief?

I think the game is brilliant. I never played the original Thief games but I do enjoy the stealth action genre. Thief keeps you immersed throughout; whether you are following the main quest line or if you are hunting across the city for secrets, special inventory or doing side quests for other characters in the game. I have found most of the time thus far spent has been collecting hidden clues and maps across the city to find better loot to steal, whilst exploring the expanse of city that you have available to you.

The game is gorgeous and is so impressive to the eye. The attention to detail means you have to pay attention too, because if you are not paying attention you might find yourself stepping out infront of a guard whom you did not expect.

The AI is decent. They are a little slow and dim witted and I would have hoped for more challenges from them, but my play style has been to hide in the shadows anyway and keep far away from any light sources. The watchmen will not spot you if you are in the shadows until they are very close to you, but if you are in the light or if you run they will be on you instantly. They hunt and track well so when you are spotted by more than just one its often a challenge to find a place to escape to.

I would have asked for a more sandbox-esc level design. As you progress down the main storyline larger parts of the city become available to you. But often there are loading screens separating these areas off, and these loading screens very quickly become one of the largest drawbacks of the game. If there was a more open world approach then it would serve better.

Missions are quite linear, but there are always multiple ways in which to complete each objective with various different paths and options available to the player, as well as other points of interest that hide unique items and loot. For the diligent player, scavenging and hunting around in each new area can be very fruitful. If you were expecting a fast paced game then this is not the game for you. It is slow, not monotonous at any stretch of the imagination. But you play a Master Thief, a diligent hero, where planning and careful execution are your greatest assets. So you will be taking your time in exploring the city and in completing each mission. If you wanted a fast paced game, then don't buy this.

With comparison to other games of a similar style and genre; Dishonoured springs to mind. I really enjoyed Dishonoured and went through 3 play-through's of the game. It allowed much greater combat flexibility which I enjoyed doing in one run of the game. But it was easy, with blink and other supernatural abilities you could vanish. It was fast paced and though I loved it to bits I think it doesn't compare to Thief. I can see myself playing through Thief another two times and exploring every inch of the city whilst being undetected throughout. Dishonoured with its very linear storyline and a story that is over as soon as it has begun doesn't offer the same amount of replay ability or immerse the player as much as Thief has. Dishonoured was easy in comparison to Thief which allowed lots of those less able or younger to find enough challenge but not impossible. This game offers real challenge especially if you seek all the riches that you can get, which is how you should play a stealth game such as Thief.

Some of the pathing is not great. I often find myself falling off a building when I had no intention of ordering my hero to do so. But it means that you require 100% precision if you want to jump down off the roof onto the narrow ledge below. There is a lot of detail in the mechanics, such as needing momentum to be able to reach certain places. I think a jump function would have made the game a little more intuitive and less 'lets hold down space for everything'. But the movement flows well.

If the game had been more open, with less loading screens between different sections of the city, with AI who were perhaps more attentive, I would have rated this game a 10. As it stands it is an excellent game, which had a little more potential to go further. It is a challenge and if you like meticulous planning and strategy when playing your stealth games then this is the game for you. The slow rolling game offered hours of fun and I intend to replay the game at least another 1 time. A must for all who like the Stealth Genre.

Combat if you are noticed by the guard or bounty hunter run or reload last save, taking on multiple enemy is too difficult, because of the pour combat mechanic. The bow shoot like a firearm straight no curve trajectory like it should be realistically.

Story, Mission and the Map of the city all together is a real mess that make no sense at all. Frequent loading time, confusing how did I get here moment. Its a real pain to go from point A to point B.

Conclusion there not that much good to say about this game. If the people that worked on this game had had half the conviction as they do now on Metacritic, trying to salvage the sell of this new release. Maybe there would be a decent fourth instalment of the Thief franchise to enjoy. After one day of playing and realized there was no point, that it was not going to get better. I returned it back to the store and I got $30 with the trade in program, soon you wont even get $5 for this.

Having played the first three installments of the Thief series multiple times, all I can say is that 15+ hours into the game, I am enjoying the game immensely.
**Skip to the bottom for the gist of it. ***
No jump button? No problem. Where do you need to jump to? Garret is still able to leap from beam to beam, or jump down from a high ledge. So you can't jump on a hay cart or barrel?

Garret is still able to leap from beam to beam, or jump down from a high ledge.
So you can't jump on a hay cart or barrel? Big deal.
A Master Thief finds other ways in. Besides, jumping makes noise. Thieves shouldn't.

Let's be honest, the older Thief's storyline wasn't going to win any awards either.
Take it for what it is. I haven't progress far along enough to give a full opinion on the story.

People take issue to the combat mechanics. Garret is a thief, not a cutthroat.
If you have to fight The Watch. You're doing it wrong.

I'm not sure if some of the negative reviewers realize that you can turn off all the "hand holding" or way point markers in the options.

Is the game linear? Yes, in a way but aren't all games?
You're objective is to steal loot (I like that it still glitters).
Go in through the window? Basement? or front door? Choose your path, but I'd go explore every path to look for loot. Its not like Deus Ex where you're choices have specific consequences.

I am pleased that this installment retains some of the original aspects and didn't try to reinvent itself with whatever is currently the hot trend in gaming. ie sand-box game. Go play GTA or Skyrim instead.
Don't rate this game badly because the game Eidos designed isn't what you wanted.
That's like saying BF4 is garbage because I can't fly a space shuttle or use sharks with lasers mounted on their heads.

Ok so the Watch and some civilians have repeated idle dialogue.
Nothing new about that. It as like that in all of the previous games and many other games too.
Hardly a reason to not like this game.

Seems like most of the negative reaction to this game is based on what they personally wanted in this game to do. Some complained of stuttering, get a new video card or lower the quality settings. One even went to say they expected more from a developer like Ubisoft....really?!!

    TLDR;

I enjoy the game. Maybe because I'm not a complainer. Its not perfect, but show me a game that is.
Thief 2014 has many old-Thief elements to it, with some updated features like Focus points to enhance your abilities to be stealthier, have better aim or pick locks (and pockets) faster.

You can't do anything you want in the game, you do have to follow the story path and steal the objective.
You have an assortment of arrows at your disposal, which you can stash extra stock at your hideout.
There is a merchant that will sell you those arrows, along with tools to make your thievery easier.

Personally I find this game fun. Aside from the some minor bugs, but it doesnt detract from its enjoyability.

    Just sayin'.

Very surprised by the heroic scores of "critic" reviews. Do not be blinded by the 10/10 or 90% scores...one imagines there are incentives for those people posting such reviews and scores.

Since the dawn of time, mankind has struggled with difficult philosophical questions such as, "how did the universe begin?" and "is there a God?". Add to that list "how was this piece of amateur-code allowed to be part of the Thief franchise?"

    It shall remain unknowable.

I am attempting to get a refund - that was no joke. I am a real human reviewer/gamer who played the original thief classic titles on PC.

For me this game it is a worthy "thief - game". If you compare it with other stealth games, it is like you compare a book to my personal holy bible!

Thief is a stealth game, where everything should be resolved that way, it is not intended for pleasing the entire world as in the case of Dishonored, but rather to follow the footsteps of the classic Thief and please their fans

I've played 15 hours and I'm not even close to finishing the game I'm in the middle of the main story and many side quests I have left to do , which are very funny indeed. For people who loves stealth games should try Thief. it must be admitted that the AI is weak ( may change as they are starting to put patches), another point ... the city can offer makes the game not so linear and you go looking for unique items that are as tables or plates of the city or you decode secret locations if you read personal books that you can find in homes. Thief is a great game of stealth but the only big theme out of AI ,on the plot still cant talk because they do not yet finished the game but it is promising.

Talking About the graphics it is very well optimized, playing at 2560x1080 full graphics i have 30 fps relatively stable but
there are FPS drops but I'm sure that can be solved by OC, about Blur I didnt noticed at all it must but there are people that dislike blur ... that is fixed with a mod.

Swoop only activates when releasing the key, not on pressing it. It's clunky and annoying.

When faced with a chest of drawers, instead of being happy, you'll say "oh, no", because now you have to watch 4 annoying cutscenes where the camera jerks around, not even returning you to its starting position.

When you crouch the Field of View zooms in making it painful to play. Imagine playing while looking through a magnifying glass.

Sometimes it blocks you from walking off a ledge, unless you're running, so you have to press a key to drop down, but sometimes it will drop you when you didn't expect it. Have fun with that.

    - Lighting is binary, you're either visible or you're not. Fog is everywhere but does nothing.
    - Sound is largely irrelevant when compared with previous games,
    - Controls are limited after being designed for controllers, 2 sets of crucial actions (Movement/Interaction) are grouped and unchangeable. Enjoy falling off a building after mantling when you intended to climb instead.
    - AI is probably some of the worst I’ve ever seen (Thief 1 & 2 actually have superior AI).
    - Level design is mostly corridors & shafts. In each level there’s 2 routes minimum, didn’t find more than 3. Obvious ‘stealth’ route, alternate route/Deus Ex HR-style ventilation shaft route & then a more ambitious, often vertical route if you’re lucky.
    - Missions: They very quickly devolve into find whatever/go-to wherever to watch the next cutscene and witness the atrocious story.
    - Garrett: Generic, modern protag who the world revolves around. No witty remarks, mostly just blurts out edgy comments or recounts information the player is already aware of.
    - Port: Pretty good except for the memory leaks & crashes.
    - Graphics: Bloated, old unreal engine 3 with improved crisp shadows. Colour palette: blue + orange only.

    - There is a qte within the first 30 seconds of gameplay
    - Forced takedown sequences
    - Forced escape sequences
    - Thirdperson climbing sequences
    - Occasional QTE before load screens/level loads

I was looking forward to the reboot because I essentially wanted a thief game with updated graphics.
Having spent 10 hours with the reboot, here's my take. First off, the game looks good. Not jaw dropping, but good. The developers have done a nice job of giving the game a period feel. Second, Stealing is fun. Some of the side quests and main missions create a great atmosphere where you actually feel like a contracted thief. One or two though, are pretty bland. Most of the animations are good, but some like closing a cabinet take too long. I would've also liked a single animation for picking up multiple pieces of loot at once. Certain windows do close behind you, but not doors, so I don't see where those complaints come from.

In my opinion, comparisons to Dishonored are unfair. This is a different type of game. I didn't enjoy the stealth in dishonored, it was always more fun to use magic offensively. In Thief, stealth is fun. It's all you have really. If you're up against more than 1 opponent, you generally won't survive. You're a thief not an armed robber.
The AI falls apart at rare times, but is mostly ok. The audio could've been better. The story is typical of the franchise. Take that for what you will. The City is a disappointment, feeling disjointed because of loading screens and a horrible map. Finding your way around sometimes becomes a chore. It feels more like a small town rather than a large city. Because of this, thief feels at times like a last gen game at times, instead of a current (8th) gen one. Hopefully we'll get a sequel where these issues will be addressed.

The levels are linear somewhat, but it is NOT a Call of Duty sneaker. There's no such thing. If you're good at Thief, you'll see very little action.

In spite of its failings, Thief remains a fun game. I don't compare it to its predecessors. I had an amazing time with those games as a kid but when i replayed them, the same sense of awe wasn't there. I loved Deus Ex, and Deus Ex:HR while fun, didn't hold a candle to that game in my mind. Played on its own merits, this reboot has enough going for it to give you a sneaky good time.

Has the developer’s attempt to cater to as many players as possible resulted in mechanics that work against the core experience of the series? Does the developer possess a completely different concept of immersion to us – theirs one of regular cutscenes, full animation and high detail visuals, and ours the more abstract sense of place that arises from the creation of whole and consistent locations? Does Eidos Montreal simply not understand what made the original Thief trilogy the masterpieces that they are?

Bopping guard on head from behind with blackjack replaced with scripted takedowns, doing it yourself too hard for consoles.
Technically weak, linear small levels, loading every 2 minutes. Level design very meh. Mandatory 4-5 per level advancing forward in cutscene, cutting off previous part of level, because having level accessible fully and non-linear would be too hard for consoles.
Prologue cutscene - zomg, you killed him, how could you, thieves don't do that!!!one. Chapter 1 - bonus objective, score 4 headshots on guards for extra money, because nothing spells thief quite like bow headshots. If you shoot guard from far enough, arrow flying will play out in slo-mo so cool kids can put 360 noscope thief videos with wubwub music on youtube.
All in all, disappointment on the same level as Deus Ex HR, but I guess Squeenix ran out of money to pay off journalists this time, dxhr PC metacritic: 90, IGN: 90. Thief PC metacritic: 69, IGN: 68.

If you thought Garrett was well equipped before, buckle yourself up son as he now he has incredible supernatural powers! These let him see through walls, way better than having to look yourself like the other games. Rope arrows are back with some serious attitude, these help you more than ever before with the new and improved levels! Let’s face it, the levels of the first games were lame level design, those suckers were boring as hell, this time the emphasis is on the real deal; stealing stuff!

You want a script, you got it! The story has plenty of wicked action and developed characters enough to satisfy you film fans out there. The dialogue is cranked up to 2014 and these dudes aren’t scared to tell you what they think. F-this and f-that, s-this and time to drop a c-bomb in there somewhere. Who needs that Old English stuff when you have proper swearing?

Thief looks like a real boss! Prepare for an eyegasm the second you see it! Followed by an intense eargasm! The music is insane and awesome! Oh yeah, the game plays awesome too as you can become a real thief and steal from peoples houses just like in Brixton - word to the massive! But how about some end-of-level bosses to mix up the action a bit? How about a zombie hordes mode for multiplayer? They could have a mode called Steal The Flag which would be awesome in Thief!

So all you Thief fans won’t be disappointed as this game is a true soldier in the stealth war, guaranteed to keep the millions entertained until the next Battlefield! Anyone who disses this game needs to back up their stuff, this is the greatest game in this quality series so far.

Graphics 10 – proper blazing showing the true potential of the XBONE and PS4 capabilities
Sound 10 – AMAZING sounds, it’s like a orchestra in my home!
Gameplay 10 – Addicting as alcohol or any drug!

Thief has been around a long time. The first game came out in 1998 I believe and it is an iconic game in the industry and inspired lots of other stealth games. Most Thief games since then have had a mixed reception. There are those who expect each new game to be exactly like the original. And there are others who want Thief to be more of an action game. Then there are those that have always understood what Thief is about and enjoy it for what it is: a damn good pure stealth series.

The new Thief is no exception. Nothing has given me the sense of skulking about in the shadows and having to use stealth in order to survive better than Thief has. This isn't an action/stealth hybrid like Dishonored or Splinter Cell that you can go in guns blazing and cut down half a dozen guards in a short amount of time. In Thief you have to remain undetected or face the consequences.

At first I was disappointed by the fact you can't use the rope arrow on any wood surface as before and can only attach to specially highlighted beams. But the game makes up for it in other ways. The new swoop ability is pure awesomeness. It gives a fluidity and speed to the game while still feeling stealthy and appropriate.

The graphics are quite good, with some of the best lighting and shadows I have ever seen in a game. The world itself is quite dreary and that may turn off some people, but it has character and a strange charm of its own.

The sound could be a little more atmospheric in my opinion, but it is generally still generally good. The voice acting is very good in the case of Garrett and fairly good in the case of most of the other characters. Garrett is such an intriguing character.

All in all I think Thief carries the stealth torch admirably, and probably better than any other modern "stealth" game. I've enjoyed it a lot and if you like stealth I am sure you will enjoy it too.

    1. I have played the previous Thief games
    2. I have played the game for 3-4 hours or so
    3. Playing it on a PC with a Razer x360 controller with graphics almost maxed
    4. Objectively, I would score this game an 8 but felt the need to counter the abysmal amount of 0/10 user reviews here. This game is not perfect, but it clearly deserves more. This is the first time I have scored a game higher than I consider it actually worth.

So. Most reviews and statements complaining about movement and not being able to 'jump down' ledges or vault/climb certain objects are due to incompetence of the players. I am sure of this. Admittedly, at first, I had troubles with movement as well until I actually realised what each button does and how the context of Garrets position determines the outcome. Once I learned how to 'hop' from ledge to ledge, understand the visual queues that determine whether a wall can be climbed and how to effectively drop and jump down with precision, moving around the broody environments became a thrilling blast.

It doesn't have the freedom and speed of Assassin's Creed and that's why I absolutely love it. The jumps, distances and climbs feel realistic as you navigate the streets and rooftops. Also, I think it is good that the game feels a bit more 'narrow' than people are used to. Instead of being able to climb any wall and object, I am forced to consider my options. This creates gripping moments in places that you otherwise wouldn't expect them to.

Let me explain. First though, one detail needs to be explained; I have never blackjacked or killed any guards in the game in my 3-4 hours of gameplay. Also, I have only used a single water and blunt arrow (not out of necessity but to test it) and no lethal arrows. This, to me, is amazing. Actually, come to think of it, I am fairly confident that no guard has even ever SEEN me in my 3-4 hours of gameplay. Now, you might think the stealth is easy then. That is not the case. True, in some places, it is easy to stick to the shadows and bypass the unsuspecting guards but others places leave me without a means to 'shadow' my way past. This means I will have to try and find an alternate path or distract the guard somehow and that is never too easy.

Also, the immersion in Thief is absolutely fantastic. Opening doors with lights behind them creates stretching shadows for me to use. Thunder, if for just this crucial moment, illuminates most of the street if it strikes and must be taken into consideration.

The 3-4 hours of gameplay, for me, have only been used to finish 2 main missions and one sidemission. These could be done in an hour but that's what makes this game great. It always gives you the ability and circumstances to go anywhere and loot anything without anyone seeing you and with zero lethality. Pulling off these little heists are beyond thrilling.
For example, a locked strongbox in a lit area with 2 guards talking nearby. Their peripheral view is enough to spot me after a few seconds of lockpicking. Instead I had to create a diversion, verrry quickly (based on your own speed and skill) lockpick the box and retreat because the guards had returned, Now I could wait for the right moment that gives me this 2 second window to dash to the box, loot the contents and dash back into a dark alleyway. No one suspected a thing. This little heist took me maybe a good 10 minutes of planning and timing with quicksaving and quickloading and I can't stress this enough how awesome it felt.

The game market is saturated with fast paced shooters and ultra-powerful 'stealth' characters (a. creed, splinter cell). In Thief you don't even have a sword. It can be played with pure stealth. To me, that says something.

Guide to thoroughly enjoying the game:
    1. Turn off as much HUD elements and assists as you can
    2. Try to crank up the graphics as much as you can
    3. Turn off the lights
    4. Experiment and set 'impossible' goals to yourself (pickpocketing a guard in a very difficult place or stealing something that is easy to steal using lethals)
    5. Discover and enjoy

One thing I will say. The combat itself seems clunky and a bit weird (as little as I have had contact with it) and I don't like how Garret actually looks but these are extremely trivial to me. I rarely have to see Garret and I know I will never engage in combat if at all possible. Also, I didn't even mention the plot. That's simply because I don't care. I play this game like I play minecraft.

Don't believe the reviews and rosy-eyed nostalgics. It is one of the best games I have ever played. You will definitely enjoy this if you like stealth games (not stealth-action).

Sorry for a long one :D

Why? I enjoyed like hell this game. It's one of those games that you only close because you have to go, not because you got bored. I just love the stealth, the way you fool the guards and steal things in front of people's nose. You're silent, in the darkness, wait for the perfect moment to get the bounty and disappear like smoke. Flawless.

When it comes to optimization, it may be not too optimized. Still, I play it on medium-high, I get 60 constant fps (no matter where am I), and I'm happy with the graphics.

For people that review Thief as bad: combat is poor, I understand it. But this game is NOT about combat. This is about stealth. If you complain about poor combat, or game too easy, switch to Master difficulty, complete all the Steam achievements, then come, and I'll regret my words. Until then, your opinion is simply an assumption, and must not be taken into account.

10/10, no game since 2001's Serious Sam 1 has made me have so much fun. Only Skyrim approached it.

Most doors are unable to be opened, which is terribly disappointing for a stealth game, and makes the game seem very linear. AI is abhorrent and provides no level of immersion whatsoever. You can look a guard dead in the eyes 5 feet away in the dark and he'll have no idea you're there. It's weird that the animal AI is made to be better than human AI. I like the fact that birds and dogs will be alerted at sudden movement or noise. I feel as though the human AI should act differently from one another, so one person would be more alert than another to movement in darkness or the slightest sound. That's what creates immersion for me. Moving on, the dialogue between guards and monologue of guards is pretty terrible. Walking around an area, you can hear the exact same dialogue multiple times. The voice acting is cheap and a weak attempt at creating a natural environment. The volume of said dialogues physically don't make any sense, and HUGELY break immersion. The fact that you can be facing a man standing 15 feet away from you and you hear his voice in surround sound defies the physics of sound. Another very important point, as this is the first of the franchise that I have played, I feel absolutely no emotions towards any of the characters (playing through about 4 hours), and I don't even know why I'm a thief. I have no set purpose in this game, and that's why this game bores me. Expand

Don't get me wrong, the game isn't perfect… but I get the impression that a great number of the pro reviewers are simply too young to know what Thief is even supposed to be like. (Anyone who calls this story "confusing" needs to go back and play the earlier Thief games. Thief has always had a "nebulous and highly interpretable" narrative.) To the reviewer at IGN complaining of "flat, drab" characters… I can only assume they mean the color palette of the clothes worn by the peasants and the dark grittiness of the city. They can't mean the spoken dialog. (It's not as good as the old voice actor… but those are tough shoes to fill.) Is it "good enough?" I think so. People are saying the AI are bad, but it's still better then what I experienced from Thief 3, and with the difficulty turned up, and even on normal the AI is rather aggressive and intelligent,

The story is above average thus far, I'm only three chapters in and it's only getting better, But it's really a matter off preference, I hate most fantasy and medieval stories with a passion, but this is something different from the usual crap you get with fantasy stories, It's a very detailed city, plagued by disease, poverty and a corrupt leader, there's no holding back when they try and get that point across, they're wheel barrows with corpses, scenes of people being abused by the law enforcement, it's brutal compared to most of the garbage stories we get.

It's stealth game play is currently unmatched, people say the controls are buggy, but I've had a pleasant experience and everything about that is fine, I do have a gripe with the dash thing that garret can do, you can pretty much glide past most NPC's.

Overall, it's a great game that you should give a go, no matter your disposition of the previous games. it's for hardcore stealth fans, combats not viable.

some people review this game badly just because the they eliminate certain things that the game should have. Some people can't get over the nostalgia that the Thief series had been gone through like in the Deadly Shadows or Metal Age. No problem these things can be solved in a patch or dlc all can be good just we need to be supportive so that the main developers can make more mission or maybe an expansion just give them a try.

Just to remember that the Thief game is not the same as the others so it is not related to the others, as far as i can see the people talking yes there is allot of industrialization, think about like the Metal Age nothing can stay forever a dark muddy city. I love some ideas that they've implemented the menu is very diverse and specially the dashing things it is really helpful while sneaking and evading guard .

I say this: Don't judge this game for not being in the same league as the other thief give them a chance be optimistic and don't vote stupid on the reviews just because you are a douchebag and listen to other people crap. Most of the people are like a herd of animals when someone says something bad they all say the same thing.Be open minded when you speak not follow one person insight like "OMG THIS GAME IS SO BAD JUST BECAUSE IT ISN'T THE SAME CHARACTER" .

All the graphical gameplay are good i love the immersions but the Liniar story is kinda old dated from now on. They should make more mission and more side mission on this game. For this I'll give them a good 9 for them GJ Eidos.

Thief has great graphics, great atmosphere. Runs quite well but does seem to have big fps drops when loading new area. Game mechanics work just fine.

Even tho I have not finished it yet, the story does seem to be sort of boring. IMO characters are complete fail, you could replace them with talking turds and the game would still feel the same. Voice acting is sort of bad. Worst thing

Worst thing IMO is that there is no open world for you to explore.

Overall it is a meh game. And I completely understand why the fans of Thief series hate this game.

The worst Thief game ever made. The story is laughable, the AI is stupid, the game is horribly linear, the protagonist sucks. Nope, it's not Thief, it's CoD with stealth. The "reboot everything" trend is gotta be stopped someday and I hope they won't make a sequel for this garbage.

On the plus side the game runs really well even on older hardware as long as you disable SSAA so pretty much anyone can enjoy the game as it's meant to look. Expand

I started exploring the city and jumping in houses, the reward was usually a gold coin and a brooch or candlestick. NONE OF THESE ROOMS WERE OCCUPIED! creating a 'challenge' of press SQ button to open the same cabinet, desk, safe, and night stand as the last room. Lockpicking requires no skill, once you get the hang of it you're set, your lockpick does not break. A few missions I tried ran approximately 2 minutes, that includes running down the same path you've previously been, jumping in a room the size of a kitchen, and opening the cupboard to retrieve your loot, possible ambush? nope you're fine, nobody is ever home.... good thing you extinguished all the candles. This bothered me the most about the game.

Your stealth skills are put to the test on the ground level with the city watch, which isn't very challenging to begin with. Quite decent sneaking action on a few levels, this is the Thief I've cherished way back in the day. +1 here

Cutscenes are the same exact thing - you take someone down, pass through a window, steal loot, knockout a guard, ect.. its all the same cutscene per action, not a huge problem but I guess I'll deal with it.

Graphics are alright, even though the environment is solid and most objects can't be broken. The AI toons have the IQ of a potato, its fun to shoot an arrow in their head and run, but once they are all dead you can come out and explore unharmed.

Thief feels like a flashback to 2000, it is a much fancier version of deadly shadows, I would highly suggest waiting for the price to drop, I wouldn't pay more than $25 for this game.

With some doubtfull anticipation I booted up the game on my trusty game pc. Only to be confused; why did people say this was bad or why doesn't it look like the old games. The most hatefull review I read came from Kotaku and it was a rant of garbage based upon a pre-release version, now do not get me wrong, this game has some minor problems.

    The good:

    - A city hub
    - Faster movement than the previous games
    - An immersive world, with mystery, corruption and adventure.
-intense gameplay, running around on rooftoops, lockpicking, going for the big loot.
    - You are worthless in a fight ( I'll explain in a second.)

    The bad:
    - Textures seem bland sometimes, even on ultra settings.
    - some conversations seem to loop, I heard a guard say: "ya get the noose", 4 times in a row.
    - AI is unpredictable, in some situations it works in some it miserably fails.
    - slow sneaking looks really strange. (feet move faster than your speed, looks like moonwalking.)

Like I said before, Garret is a terrible fighter, he has no trouble with a one on one fight, but more than one and its better to run as fast as you can.

The gameplay itself is what I expected of a Thief game, lots of sneaking and lots of stealing. The side missions are done very well and the upgrades in the game are actually usefull.

The AI can sometimes glitch out, in one situation the guard got stuck in his routine, making him spin around at speed of a tornado, caught in a vortex,in a fan.

But even if the AI fails at some things, there are some cool mechanics at play as well. For instance speed affects a lot of things, if you hastly try to pick a lock, guards can hear you. Running up a wall instead of climbing up via crates, makes more sound.
People ussually leave you alone, unless you: shoot your bow in plain sight or break something, they will call out for the guard and point them towards your last seen location and direction where you were heading. Missions are varied and require thought to proceed. your take on a situation can define everything about the mission.

The city is your mission hub, it isn't as free as Assassin's Creed, but it is fun to look for ways up or down and into buildings.

A lot of people are complaining about windows closing behind you, but actually it does not bother me that much.

The map can be a hassle to use, it does its work, but it does not show things suchas acces points to other districts and this can be quite annoying and it took me several minutes to look for an entrance to another district.

The story is quite standard, but does give a red line through the game and has it's exciting moments.

    Conclusion:

It's nowhere near a 60 bucks game, but it's far from bad. The game fits nicely in the Thief series and does a great job immersing you in another world. Some things could have been better, but looks past these things and you'll find a really fun game.

When I walked in river, it can't be heard, this is so fu*king wrong. I made save in wardrobe, after it guard can see me when I load my save, this game need patch soon. You have no weapon, no sword and every enhancement is just too expensive. If this game will be patched soon, maybe I can get something like 7.5, now I'm going to rate it one point less - 6.5. Expand

I had a big expectation about this 'Thief' reboot. But as a fan of the old game, I think it has delivered fairly but not lived up to the level I expected. Thief has some awkward design choices like:
I can't jump or climb in my own way. Only the character will automatically climb up or jump from some ledges whereas in some cases it will not. It makes the movement to feel a bit artificial.

Also in some cases I have to wait almost 5 minutes but still the guards will patrol in the same small area in same manner and I have nothing but to kill them which causes detection.
Now coming to the positive sides, using the shadows and the fabulous 'Swoop' ability, remaining undetected is really satisfying.
The game gives a high level of customization options to play as I wish, like I can turn the 'Focus' ability completely off and there are plenty of other options and the game favors this by rewarding. Also the graphics and world-detail is pretty good.
I had great hope from Eidos after playing Deus Ex Human Revolution which is among the best games I have ever played. But it feels that even being under action-rpg genre, Deus Ex HR was a more satisfying stealth game than Thief. Overall I am happy to play the game as a stealth-game fan but the game had opportunity to give us something more.
