This just isn't fun. The map system doesn't give a decent idea of where you should be going so why on earth have the map designers put in so many dead ends where you can see where you want to go over a 3 foot wall but obviously the all-powerful witcher can' t jump it! It's not the only flaw in the map design as a lot of the time you're running from somewhere to somewhere else instead of questing or fighting; I did not buy this as a running simulator. The quests tend not to make sense as I keep being told what to do from my journal, which doesn't bear much resemblance to what the quest-giving character has told me. When you drink certain things you're slowed to a snail's pace, unless you've got your sword out... but you're only allowed to draw your sword at night meaning a trudge through molasses until it wears off. On the positive side, the secondary component of herbal ingredients does add a very nice twist to when you make potions and does give you a smile when you find a component that will perfectly complement a certain concoction. Perhaps some day I'll complete the game but since my frustration reaches too high a level after about an hour with this that day will be far off. Expand

Not worth the price. this game is almost identical to Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring as far as gameplay/graphics goes, but i enjoyed LOTR better, and didn't require as much hardware. it's a decent game, but it's definately not epic. it almost reminds me of how every single MMO now-a-days is nearly identical to WoW, making them garbage.

Most aspects of the game seem really good. The story seems really deep, although, i couldn't get past chapter two. The characters are mostly unique and interesting, however, it seems like you can get "romantic" with any woman within seconds. The setting is dark and mysterious which really suits the mood of the game.

But, the combat system is so monotonous and simple that I regret buying it. You just wait for the weapon swing to appear yellow and then you press the left mouse button. After that, you just wait again for that yellowish swing and press the left mouse button. Occasionally, you can throw in a magic attack.

This is why I despise western games. All the male characters follow the same sexist stereotypes with no variety between them. Female characters are more than just breasts and thighs walking around. The lines are horrendous with no depth. Quite a shallow game. There are so many other things wrong, but this above all prevented me from being to enjoy the game.

The Mac version is a disaster. Can't really believe they're even selling it as a "Mac" version. It's really just a wine port of the PC version. Crashes all the time and often won't reopen after a crash without reinstalling the whole game. After several reinstalls, at this point it won't for open for me at all. Hardly got through any of the game. Complete waste of money.

The game itself is pretty dull, what I could play of it. Hard to believe it got such good reviews from critics. Must be boosting their ratings in an effort to support an indie RPG. While I respect the work that went into this as an indie title. The game's just not fun to play. The story drags while you wander around some little town area. Combat's mostly just click repeatedly on your enemies.

Seeming to be a critically acclaimed game, I picked up the Witcher relatively cheap, expecting to be pleasantly surprised. Instead, I was shocked and numbed into absolute boredom and disgust. In a word, the Witcher is bland.

Dialog is utterly monotonous. Literally. I heard the main character use one tone of voice for nearly the entire game, as well as an utter lack of facial expression.

Combat is paced clicking. Tactics are only present slightly, and you may be required to swing your sword to different patterns if you fight different enemies.

Storyline... An article that RPGs should be known for, considering at their core they should bring the player into playing a role, and making the player feel attached to the game world, it's characters, and it's struggles. However, I found myself not only not feeling attached, but rather bored, and at times disgusted at how a game this bland could achieve critical acclaim. Suffering from "repetitive level syndrome," perhaps is what plagues this game. A wash-rinse-repeat combat system, presenting "complex moral choices," in which everyone is guilty almost always. The storyline, is quite frankly, common. No true surprises await with this title.

A bargain bin game in every sense, the Witcher is great for wasting time installing, uninstalling, and using to collect dust.

The time delay between clicking and action utterly breaks any way of knowing if you're fighting properly or not.
    2) You can't hop over waist high fences. I need to say no more on this. It's utterly stupid.
Then in terms of story, character and acting. Oh my word. It's embarrassing.
I saw reviews complimenting the GFX. They are appalling! I can't believe they were looking at the same game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm trying to like this game, I really am, but it's proving to be very difficult. I realize I am playing on hard, but this is just ridiculously... not fun. At the particular part I'm at, it autosaved before a long speech that I have to skip through each time I die, or when the person with me dies (because I saved them, this person dying would obviate the whole point to everything). Right after the long speech is a boss battle. At first I was thinking "Yay, time to put interesting mechanics into a fight instead of the regular click-at-intervals-until-something-dies", but instead, it's the same thing but now you have another person to worry about. On top of all of this, it's pretty vague where or how to do things, and not in the good, find-it-yourself way. It's more of a "walk around the entire map hoping you find where that guy wants you to be." The friend who gifted me this game said it was the best RPG he's ever played... I'm trying to believe him, but I honestly can't find anything good with it. I mean, if you like it, more power to you, but I feel more obliged to play through it just to get to the second one...
Gosh, this review looks unfocused and sloppy... but then, so does this game... Hopefully the second one will be better.

""The Witcher: Enhanced Edition" is really just enhanced garbage. How people can rate this unpolished and mediocre turd of a game so highly is beyond me. The character you play as, "Geralt", is about as interesting as watching paint dry. I couldn't be bothered to give a f*ck about him or anyone else in this game. The side quests are mostly boring fetch quests, and the main quest is boring and unimaginative, plus the way the game handles quests is annoying as hell. Trust me, when you click on "Quests" and 400 quests show up (side quests + main quests mixed all over the place) you just feel like turning the f*cking game off... which I found myself doing quite often. Then there's the sex: every woman in this game wants to have sex with your character (apparently women go crazy whenever they see a guy with long white hair, lizard eyes and no personality whatsof*ckingever (ah, so THAT's what I've been doing wrong all these years, thanks for the tip developers!)) and as a "reward" (besides herpes and god knows what else) you get a "sex card" (you don't actually get to see your character having sex, instead you get to see a card where the woman you just boned shows you her **** Wow... I'm so excited... but I'm sure the 10-year-olds who gave this game an 8 or higher are enjoying themselves. After all, we can't have a "mature" RPG without including sex, can we? Idiots... The Witcher is not a very good RPG, and I will explain exactly why: The combat system is annoying and unbalanced, Geralt will take forever to swing his sword, whereas your enemies have lightning- fast maneuvers and attacks. Another problem is that traversing the world is hard. There is no horse to help you get to areas quicker, and no fast travel, and the sprint ability barely helps. The graphics looked ugly - after some patching it sill looked bad. The combat was a total disappointment - click, click click and then repeat. After playing around 2 hours I had enough. The rest of mechanics probably had some potential but the game didn't interest me to discover what else it had to offer. Given that I'm not the biggest fan of the world created by Sapkowski I was put off and will never try my luck with this particular title.

For my thoughts, read below, but the tl;dr of it all is while the game seems to have some promise inside it, it is so mindbogglingly bland and uninteresting that I cannot begin to understand the blind, unquestioning love for it.

Graphics. While I usually try to take it easy on games about graphics, I can't even say "Good for it's time" when we had games like BioShock, Unreal Tournament 3 and Crysis in 2007. They're not BAD, but they certainly deserve no praise.

The dialogue. While sometimes well written, it's horribly delivered. It makes the delivery of Dialogue in Baten Kaitos on the gamecube look shining (and while I love BK, the dialogue is pretty iffy at times)

Animations. They are literal crap. That's all I can say. I can't tell if Geralt is trying to brandish his sword threateningly during combat or do a rain dance.

Gameplay. Really this should be #1 on this list considering how much it detracts from the game. Whomsoever decided that rhythm, timing based combat was a good idea should be hung and quartered. There's also the fact that even on normal difficulty, going into a fight with anything more threatening than a single barghest without drinking a Swallow potion is practically suicide. A prime example of this the fight with The Beast. Sure, you may have healing spells cast on you by someone to avoid spoilers, or you will until the Beast stuns you for 6 hours while taking out chunks of your health and oneshotting your help with it's 9000 adds.

Story. While for the most part it seems okay, it seems that they're using Geralt's amnesia as an excuse to troll people who aren't familiar with the world of The Witcher through the books. There's this one part in chapter one where I went to the chapel to turn in some remains for that fat merchant in the inn, then this blue ghost that looks vaguely like The Architect from Dragon Age: Origins pops up, then starts talking to me like we're old friends and yammering about Destiny. I told him to sod off.

This game truly gave a feeling that maybe today's RPG can indeed be RPGs, you can roleplay in it! A feature that I haven't seen in a CRPG for years. There are good options which really make you think and now with no naive black & white morality.

But there are some mechanics which don't just fit. The combat system tries to be something new and innovative but becomes dull and repetive. The potions and mini-games (gambling, bar fights etc.) are nice touch. But there are still many techinal glitches and bugs and the game may not run well even if you exceed the recommended settings. There are also stupid and boring fetch and kill quests which remind me of modern day MMORPGS: "Bring me ten feathers!". It's a surprise that in a single-player game you even have this kind of empty quests.

After all The Witcher kept me playing for days and I'm a big fan of RPGs. Try it out!

Already an absolute masterpiece in my eyes a year ago, and this update has launched it to easily the best RPG I have ever experienced (and I've played most). It stuns me just how shallow many of the reviews of this game are, dismissing it as a whole on account of one or two flaws, such as load times or not liking the combat model (which is highly subjective)

This is not a fairy-tale-like RPGish nonsense, it's based on Witcher books which are one of the best European dark fantasy series. Geralt is my favorite character ever in a video game, closely followed by Ezio Auditore. Other characters very also very memorable.
The game offers you a decent size world to explore, but filled with quests, interesting characters and mini-games like epic brawls in pubs. It never feels empty. The monsters are unique to the series, you won't meet any stereotype zombies and vampires. The combat system lacks somewhat, as it's very easy even on hard difficulty. It's backed up by excellent alchemy system, each potion really matters and have unique and powerful effects. Creating them is surprisingly satisfying, and since you can have only a few active due to them being toxic you need to choose carefully. There are also firecrackers and oils, so the crafting system is pretty robust. Your character gains talents that are basically skill points, skill trees are HUGE but not overwhelming and each skill does something different and interesting.
As a bonus the game comes with a level editor so you can play player-created maps and quests after finishing the main story line.
So does the Witcher have any flaws?
Well the voice acting of main characters is superb, but minor characters very often have same voices, which is somewhat annoying. Also like I mentioned above combat is very easy once you grasp the basics.
The world could have been bigger, it often feels like you don't have much space to breathe although it's never empty !

Worse than the second part in the series, but still a great game on it's own it earns a 9/10

Since it's not open world (I'm spoiled by open world/sandbox RPG games now), there are no shortcuts and you really do have to go on one specific route to get to where you need to go. That got annoying to the point where I couldn't play through it for too long because of all the boring, reptitive, and unnecessary back and forth I had to do.

Some fun monsters to fight. Really well done environments add to the immersion. Talents system was simple and fighting mechanics take a little getting used to but are easy enough. Gameplay is okay, but for me this was a story and character-driven game more than the actual action itself, which was a lot of fun at times but nothing too special at other times.

The world is on perfect level: The NPCs got a lot of life, there are many details to discover, the political background is detailed and complex. In addition you have very good music. The dialogs are on top level also: adult, happy, direct. One of the best, I could read since a long time. The story is well written and well presented. Not a big epos, but on a very good level. If you didnt have enough of this game, you can download a lot of mods. I played with a texture mod, that enhanced the graphic from 2011.

The problem: the gameplay and that means, the core of every game: In the beginning I was excited about it, but it changed fastly. The fighting with the sword is mostly a reaction game, greetings from arcade games. In addition the controling is very bad, sometimes Gerald simply didnt do the commands, because the game played the animations to the end. There are some other gameplay elements, that are annoying. Yes, the inventar is still too small.

Result: Surely a very good game, but not top.

My friends recommended me this game. I was struggling a lot in the beginning as well as everyone who played The Witcher. I hated this game and at times came very close to uninstalling it. But I always thought "they said its good, there must be more to it" and kept playing. Indeed, after 3-5 hours into the game I understood. Behind a complicated story, totally ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ talents and combat mechanics there lies one of the best RPG games I've ever played. After you grip the overall gameplay it will stop to irritate you and patterns will start to display. You will be able to enjoy the rich and immersive story, full of intrigues and twists and also those weird combats. The story is the strongest part of the game, it is very mature where decisions are hard with serious consequences and are never good or evil. They just define your political and personal preferences as you progress from an outcast monster killer. The game is also very long. I like to fulfill every quest, check all chests and barrels and enjoy games in general. With such approach, The Witcher took me 65 hours to finish. Every second was definitely worth it. Do yourself a favor, buy the game and play it. Don't get demotivated by prologue and the first act, keep playing and eventually you will get consumed, I guarantee you that. Last time this happened to me was when I played Fallout 2 few years ago, this game quite reminded me of it and I thank its creators for that.

I'd tried a few times to enjoy this game before and it had always eluded me. With Witcher 3 coming up and looking so impressive I decided I would plant myself in front of Witcher 2 until I had given it time to grow on me or cement my disdain for it.
I have to say I'm glad I did. Before, the combat didn't make sense, the quests seemed ambiguous and the general flow of the game felt plodding and ponderous.
This time, something clicked and I found that with some patience I learnt how the combat was meant to feel and I fell in love with it (mostly). The seamless jump from an Aard sign to stun, to a quick attack to close, then heavy attacks to tear chunks from the enemies health is addictive and gripping. My only gripe is that most fights tend to be either simple affairs of one or two-hitting trash enemies or somewhat frustrating Yrden/backstab fests while you dodge multitudes of other enemies. It sounds worse than it is though, the combat is punchy and satisfying and I can’t wait for more in Witcher 3.
The questing system is still a bit frustrating. The game doesn’t warn you when you’re about to fail quests because you cross an arbitrary point in the story that is incompatible with whatever side quest you might have been working on. Again, this is a minor complaint, the system isn’t punitive and for the most part it’s clear when you’re about to enter a major story quest and need to wrap things up before you go on.
I don’t know what it was that clicked, but I really can’t think of much to fault this game on. If Witcher 3 is everything we’ve been promised then I can only imagine where RPG’s will go from here, because it will be hard to match, let alone beat.

In order to understand the third game, I said, I must experience the first. And experience it I did. For 30 minutes. Enough to do the prologue and get into the first chapter and decide this combat was the single worst experience I've had with one hand.
Regardless, after falling head over heels for the Netflix adaption of the novels I decided all three games must be given proper due. And you know what? The combat was manageable. Wasn't fun exactly, but it wasn't a deterrent anymore. Most people will still see rhythm game mechanics in an rpg and quit while they're ahead though, so allow me to fill in the gaps in their missing experience.
Since I already mentioned the combat a lot, and so does everyone else, may as well start by finishing my thought there. If you don't know this game made an attempt to blend traditional rpg mechanics with a more modern action rpg style and created a pseudo-rhythmic approach to fighting. You click to start an attack sequence and click at intervals to continue it for more damage, and bonus damage for precise timing. There is a dodging mechanic, though I say that lightly because if you use it for more than boss fights or really large groups early on let me know. I'd be truly interested in that solely unique experience of yours. Otherwise two potions, swallow and blizzard, can trivialise any fight you so desire. So enough of the obvious.
To talk about the appearance at all wouldn't be saying much. It's a 2008 game by a relatively small company at the time. It looks fine, but some animations simply confuse me. Apparently in this universe children model their run cycle after a headless chicken. And otherwise the use of the same four models over and over again breaks some immersion but if you got over the hump that is the combat you'll get over this ant hill.
Story-wise you'll get your generic fantasy affair. The enemies serve a purpose to the plot and no more, and soon get pushed aside anyway. There's a minor twist heavily suggested at the end, but if you're not a parent and don't wish to be, like myself, it will mean little to you. It's not like it's ever brought up again anyway. I have no more praise for the story than the choices either. A lot of the actual plot is steamrolled by the themes of witcher neutrality or choice. But since both factions are pretty shallow and neither is likeable it merely becomes another instance of Skyrim civil war syndrome. Choice for the sake of choice. And as much as the characters like to insist you can't stay neutral, you can and it's actually the easiest path. So much for exploring the downsides to neutrality in theme and action, because none of that matters anyway.
The interface is usable but it isn't great, though you'll think it was as clear as polished air if you make it to the sequel. And otherwise quests, both main and side are fine. You may find some confusion in quest and objective tracking. Just remember that quests can last 2 or more chapters and you'll be sweet as sickly honey. None of them are mind blowing, but very few are complete bore-fests as well.
Now to mix story and presentation here and talk about cutscenes and control of information. If at any point while playing this game you find yourself asking 'what just happened?' or 'what the hell are you talking about?' fear not. This happens so often I can only assume it's a feature. And I don't mean extended lore either, the game is actually pretty good about that and if you can't clue out a lore point from context then it's likely you can and are encouraged to buy a book on it. Otherwise, a half-decent glossary keeps most of it on hand for you. What I'm talking about here, however, is when a cutscene begins in one area and focused on one subject for a few shots and then suddenly the next shot is somewhere completely different and someone starts talking in the middle of a topic as if they'd been there for ten minutes discussing it with you. Allow me to demonstrate:
1 - "Hello how are you?"
    2 - "I'm good. How are you?"
    1 - "I'm good."
    Very next shot
3 - "And so the organs of the vleder are surprisingly hot when dissected"
    I have no words.
Sometimes things happen in game but out of sight and then a character will start a conversation with you about what they just did as if you are the only person lacking omniscience in this universe. You weirdo. In the end, you'll understand the story just fine, but 'what?' will become your catch phrase along the way.
In terms of progression, you'll find fairly quickly that levels do a lot and if you've done even a couple of side quests then by the end you've foregone even the need for potions. Enemies will fall before you like rain drops and you'd have a hard time taking damage. It's a good power fantasy actually.
    Overall good, but it's clunk.

Assim:

    História = 10
    Jogabilidade = 5

Sound: Amazing calming themes, and great voice acting. 10.
Gameplay: The gameplay is unique because it’s different from any game that I have played before. For starters the combat system is what makes this game unique. You have three different stances and different weapons which each are for particular type of enemies. Say your fighting a short dwarf, a stance changed to the hip would allow you to kill that particular enemy quicker, and if there’s a taller or bigger enemy that is attacking then a stance change where the witcher holds the sword above his head would be required. Now it’s not free combat where you just freely swing your weapon around. Instead you click on an enemy and the witcher begins to attack, then the arrow lights up and you must time your clicks with the mouse to keep the flow of combat going. Though this is something new, at times it feels overused and begins to get boring. Althought its always satisfying to switch to the lowest stance and hit enemies that surround you. The game is also a open world game similar to the elder scrolls games, but instead broken into chapter with each new chapter taking you to a newer area, or expanding on a previous one. The game is also similar to mass effect with conversation, and even allows you to make several choices which make an impact on the story. You can also develop relationships with characters such as romance, and earn sex cards for doing so. The leveling system is simple and there are plenty of skills to go through, although some may find it complex at first. The game allows for professions such as alchemy. 9.
Story: I got lost trying to keep up with the story, because in the beginning its boring, but as you progress through the game, and near the end, it is satisfying. The game ends with a cliff hanger. 9.
Lasting Appeal: Took me about 18 hours to complete the game, it’s definitely worth the 5 or 10 bucks I bought it from a steam sale (can’t remember exact price). 10.
Overall Score: 9.2 out of 10.

The Witcher is an RPG that tries to do things a little bit differently.
Focus is on preparation of your battle, not on the battle itself: the right potions, bombs and skills will make any battle easy but lack of them may make simple battles next to impossible (depending on difficulty).
There's a deep story in this game with hard choices to be made with sometimes unforeseen consequences

It gives you a fantasy medieval universe yet it is a dark one where racism, hate, politic backstabbing and sickness plague its inhabitants.

If you enjoy an RPG with a good story and deep choices or you simply want to see how The Witcher began (in the games) then this game is definitely worth picking up.

Keep in mind that this game has little hand-holding and you may feel lost at times. You may also encounter some graphical glitches like I have (beards were flying everywhere xD).

It's a great journey if you're willing to forgive it's shortcomings.

I am not a fan of the combat system but the world is very immersive and the story is above average for a modern fantasy game. Graphics are very good for their time as well. Overall I feel if you are willing to deal with sub-par repetitive combat then you will have a fun time with the story and world building.

    The pros:
+ Good quality graphics, not a big deal for me gotta get that out of the way.
    + Wonderful soundtrack. Really immersive.
+ A nice "dark fantasy" world. Where elves get racially discriminated, town guards take drugs as bribes, and use said drugs... Witches are trying to survive the ignorant mod that fears and hates them.
+ No "good vs. evil" - just a lot of people (and other creatures) with their conflicting goals, feels and wants.
+ With the above said - often you can decide who to help and how to judge those around you.
+ A lot of character development. You start as a guy who can barely deal with a couple rabid dogs, and end up taking out dragons (well, not quite 40-meter-long High Dragons like those found in Dragon Age, but 6-meter-long Wyverns) - multiple at a time, and beating much more dangerous creatures, as well as armed human enemies (mages, angry Templars, etc).
+ Not a lot of grinding for better gear. In fact you start out with quite decent gear: a Witcher's Steel and Silver sword, and not until quite late in the game can you find a weapon that's better.
+ There are ways to get very VERY powerful, if you figure out how to. It's no cheating or bug, just strategies that you HAVE TO learn if you wanna play on HARD. And there are multiple ones.
+ There are rune stones to use as a permanent upgrade to a sword, and it's nice that the better gear is rare and interesting to find, craft and upgrade (rather than something you can buy from the town merchant - just collect 100'000 gold, like in many RPGs)
+ Unique items are obtained through truly unique experiences, that may make you value them to a point that I chose to keep that item throughout Witcher-II game (using the import save feature)
+ No **** quests like "go hunt 10 squirrels and bring me the furs". Most quests are backed with a story that something really bad happened, and only a Witcher can help the person in need.
+ The quests match the protagonist, and feel on-the-spot. So unlike Commander Shepard saving the galaxy, and then being told to deal with some scumbags that stole something from a merchant, or the Inquisitor in Dragon Age looking for a lost cow.
+ Interesting characters. Many from the book. Yes you can make relationships with them, and even cheat on them if you wish to :-)
+ Overall, there are a lot of strategic and tactical things you are encouraged to learn, and a few things to upgrade (weapon and armor), but in a thoughtful way, (rather than the grind-to-get-top-level-gear way) the game is really hard to play on HARD unless you understand how to play it right.

    Cons:
    - You can't jump over a knee-high fence. WTF. But sometimes you can jump over the head of an enemy - this happens somewhat
    - The combat is a bit scripted... Not very manual control (no jump, no sprint, no duck or block), kind of an RTS-like feel to it. The "click at right time to strike a combo" is not bad, but gets old a bit too quickly. Maybe a love-it-or-hate-it thing.
    - The game world is a few isolated locations. They aren't very big either. Granted, they are nicely detailed, but will probably feel tiny to players coming from TES.

    MEH:

    - you need to adjust to game's combat system
    - first 30-90 minutes of the game are kind of boring

    CONS:
    - you don't get to use many weapons or armors, because other weapons than swords are not usable in witcher battle styles making them ineffective especially later in the game
    - after you start feeling which skills are important and focus on developing them, fighting becomes quite easy

Overall: you need to bite the bullet and endure the first hour of the game. After that you get a really good, immersive RPG with damn good story and lots of locations.

Unfortunately, the game is slow to start, and the story doesn't really move forward until reaching Chapter 2 and 3. The combat system is similar in that it feels clunky initially, but you learn to tolerate and even enjoy it upon learning more signs and becoming more familiar with it, though fighting drowners and other trash slowly becomes more arduous and repetitive as you progress. Other criticisms include the sheer amount of backtracking there is, particularly in chapters 1, 2 and 4. Also, the weird quest progression in chapter 2.

Great meaningful story is definitely the strongest advantage of the game. What developers made out of the old NWN engine is simply astonishing. One of the few cRPGs that are not only about grinding monsters, collecting loot and leveling up, must-play for fans of the genre.

On the bad side - combat system makes encounters repetitive, so if you're a lot into action games, lower the score to 8/10.

On a bad side, I encountered several crashes on windows 10. The game uses the aurora engine which is known for its bugs and map limitations. It sucks that there are very few face models for NPCs, and that I cant customize Geralt at all (there are a total of three armors in the whole game).
The combat is not that great but you get used to it and after a few hours of playtime it doesn't represent a problem anymore.
In the end this is a very good lengthy RPG (it took me 44 hours with a few side quests done) with a mature tone and interesting storyline.

Some people say it's mysogynist, I don't mind, that is their opinion. But this game is not made with the idea to be offensive to women, but to portray how it actually was in medieval times, when women certainly did not have the same rights as men.

Back on topic, if you played TW2 or TW3 before touching this, you will probably not enjoy it as much as I did, infact I didn't like TW2 one bit when I seen all the difference from the first game to the second game. To this day I don't consider TW2 a true RPG, but more of a half life with rpg elements forced in.
Then there's the debate of combat, how combat isn't very good. Well my opinion is that the combat is pretty good, with all the different styles you had to choose from and adapt depending on your enemy, and the animtions/executions were pretty satisfying I think. There is no dodging, which is probably the most iconic thing of TW2 combat, and that's just not good in my opinion.

Anyway, story isn't that bad with iconic characters growing on you as you progress int he game.

The one thing the game is severely, objectively, lacking in is the voice acting department. It has really low quality but then again the game is pretty low budget. In the Enhanced Edition they re-did almost all of Geralt's lines and maybe others, but when you find old lines it's pretty funny to see how bad they were.
The graphics aren't half bad either, with a few mods making them even better. I myself didn't use any mods for my first paythrough, and would definitely use a few if I'm ever planning to play it again.

The plot is overall pretty interesting. I would rate the game higher but the dialogue in this title feels incredibly dis-jointed in comparison to earlier titles like Baldur's Gate. There were many times when a character mentioned something that i had not done yet. Characters randomly disappear in the most frustrating times possible with zero indication of where the hell they went. There is also a lot of re-used character models here making things even more odd. Every merchant is the same fat guy with a coat.

I understand why people love it. This game have awesome story and atmosphere. But if you as much impatient as me, chapters 2 and 3 would be a challenge for your nerves.

I'm a huge fan of the open world RPG games and since The Witcher is one of them, a really praised one in fact, I had very high hopes for it. In the next couple of paragraphs, I'll try to explain how did this relatively unrefined and rough around the edges game, ended up on my All-Time greatest RPG list.

First of all, I played the Enhanced Edition so I'll be talking about this one and not the regular version of the game. Now let's start with the graphics which, I think are roughly on par with Oblivion and Neverwinter Nights 2, but those games are four years old now so to be frank, The Witcher EE doesn't really look all that great. But nevertheless, graphics aren't that important, would argue some. What makes this game stand out is the story and how it's presented. It's centered around a witcher (a monster slayer) who is trying to hunt down members of a certain criminal organization called the Salamandra. It turns out that the Salamandra is much larger than it appeared to be at first glance. Also, it's important to note that the decisions you make in the game will change the course of some events later in the game, much like in Deus Ex. Those decisions also have an impact on The Witcher 2 if you will still have the first game installed on your hard drive. Some of the characters in The Witcher are very well done and I don't mean graphically. That includes the main protagonist Gerald and some of his girlfriends, namely Shani and Triss. The Witcher is, unlike most other RPGs such as Dungeon Siege, Titan Quest etc., a very dark themed game. Perhaps not as grim and dark as Diablo games, but still very dark. Even though the combat system is very similar to other RPG games, it's still innovative enough to not get repetitive after a while. Also I have to note that there are considerably less fighting in this game than in most other RPG games which means The Witcher isn't exactly a classic hack and slash game. There are some larger battles with maybe six or seven enemies at once, but that's about it. Other than that, herbalism and alchemy are pretty big and well made parts of the game. I like how Gerald learns about these things from the books.

But there are also some problems with The Witcher. First of all, if you have a single-core processor or a slow dual-core one and are considering buying this game, just forget about it. It will stutter like hell in the crowded city of Vizima, perhaps even in the swamps. And that brings me to another part where this game isn't doing all that well. The swamps. The most boring part of the game, mainly because the beasts living there will always try to kill you and there is basically no way around that so you'll have to fight your way through their forces over and over again because the beasts are constantly respawning. This is the only part of the game that reminded me of other more classic RPG games. In the above paragraph I also mentioned that the graphics aren't that good which is very obvious with the character models in cut-scenes. Another thing that I mentioned in the previous paragraph is that The Witcher is not a classic RPG game. Yes you still level up and you can upgrade Geralds skills such as strength, dexterity etc. but in this game, there are only around ten or so weapons to use and I bet you'll only be using the two witcher swords, because they are by far the best and coolest weapons in the game. That's a bit of a shame because I always liked a hunt for better and bigger weapons in other games. For example, I am one of those few who liked Hellgate: London even though it had nothing to offer besides the chase for better and bigger weapons. Lastly, there are some bugs in the game and it can crash to desktop, so do not forget to save your progress every now and then.

All in all The Witcher isn't a perfect game, but it's innovative in some areas, deep in others and generally very fun to play which is probably it's most important characteristic. Oblivion is still the best recent RPG out there but The Witcher in the second place isn't far behind.

The main adventure still has serious pacing problems, combat's still too easy for the most part, and load times -- though reduced -- continue to get in the way of the action.
  2. The new and improved package is increasingly attractive. There are still some rough edges, and moments of genuine drama are still undercut by how they're performed, but this is an agreeably driven RPG in an agreeably ornate package.

Finally, The Witcher fulfills its potential, and, best of all, it's available as a free update, just in case you bought it anyway. [Nov 2008, p.110]
