    - backtracking, tons and tons of it.
-the combat, though unique doesn't feel satisfactory
    -no fast travel
-You will feel tired by the end of the third chapter. the fourth chapter is slow but will ultimarely pick up pace later on.

So if u can forgive "the bad". You can enjoy the game. A 7/10 from me.

I lost many (frustrating) hours because of that. I almost gave up at some point.
However, I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who likes RPGs. Just think twice when choosing the difficulty level.

The combat mechanics are this game's weak point. Occasionally you need to think strategically in combat but on normal difficulty it becomes fairly easy if you've invested time in side quests to boost your skills. Players who want to be forced to master the intricacies of the combat system should definitely play this one on Hard.

Another issue is stability. The game tends to crash, particularly in certain graphically intense areas of Chapter 2. Save and save often. Normally, this would be a deal-breaker for me, but the games other positives allow me to me to give it a pass.

Once you get the hang of the unusual combat system (which will seem alien to most), there remains an incredibly touching and moving story of evil and hate, and being stuck somewhere between the two. Deep lore, which sets the game to have choices with what seems infinite possibilities, lays the way for great re-playability and a very interesting RPG.

It's a really good game gameplay wise. The Aurora engine was brought to its limits with this title I think. The monotonous, but yet easy to control combat system works as intended, character development has a point being there (even if most magic signs are just gimmicks and I never use them).

The game shines at dialogues, lore and setting, even if the main plot is average at best (you couldn't care less about it). But the loads of sideplots, bonus quests and characters is magnificent and keeps you playing just because you really want to see how a certain substory ends, not because "I need to finish this game for the sake of it". But talk about disappointment and uninspired ending, oh God.

Slightly different to your classic Warrior-Mage-Priest-Protagonist RPG types when it comes to character development, in that you are primarily a sword-user who can mix in various forms of magic during combat, as well as crafted/purchased potions. Combat itself can be a little difficult at times, but you get used to the click-to-combo fight style after a few hours (I found playing a warrior in Dragon Age to be harder). It covers mature themes and is probably not for children. If you had not played this when it came out many years ago this can fill the void. It's as enjoyable as Baldur's Gate and Dragon Age and while it's closer to those games than Skyrim, it tries to offer a similar level of lore and fantasy. A tremendous effort by the developers, and one for the history books. Expand

Only two criticisms: 1. The game is an absolute gpu hog. I had to overclock my Radeon HD 7970 to get the frames even close to stable. I also have a six core processor, so I wonder if the game was optimized in the best way or not. 2. The Raven armor is only available at the very end of the game, and while I understand the reasoning, I had little time to enjoy the benefits of having it.

If you haven't, pick it up. And I would suggest using the over-the-shoulder camera for the best experience in terms of movement and gameplay.

Incredibly immersive, this title boasts brilliant writing and a truly engaging storyline to keep you glued to the screen until completion. While not without faults, any issues that arise are minor enough to blend to the background while gameplay, plotline and the host of well crafted characters take center stage. Very enjoyable title.

The Witcher is a very strong, and in many ways, very different game from most RPGs on the market. It's take on fantasy adventuring offers emphasis on themes often overlooked by it's rivals in the genre; such as a focus on alchemy.

    Firstly the positives:
The game's lore is very well developed, and makes for an interesting setting, (obviously based on the books). The number and diversity of quests is extensive and can make for lots of game time.
There is a focus on player choices which is always, in my opinion, well received, and the overall feel of the game is one of polish and time investment. There is also a semi-sandbox feel to the game, with NPCs strolling around the lands and changing their positions with respect to the time of the day.
It should also be noted that the game's primary pathway, that of hunting monsters, is pleasingly explored. Being a monster hunter feels gratifying and feels like a respected and realistic profession within the game's universe, and there are other things to occupy your time when not monster hunting; such as dice poker which makes for a fun mini-game.

    The negatives:
The combat within the game, although perhaps appealing to some, is too simplistic and feels too unreaslistic for my personal taste. It has a floursihed arcade-style form of combat, similar to the kind of high pulsing combat you would find in a game like Super Smash Bros, or Soul Calibur. The NPCs and the world in which they inhabit (although perhaps a flimsy criticism I acknowledge) feel, to be honest, really weird to the point of being creepy. I often found it impossible to immerse myself in the game and it's lore because I found the characters portrayed to be amazingly un-charismatic, although this could be down to the below par voice acting.

The game is very unusual however in that it feels unlike any other RPG I have played and so is immune from comparison. I would encourage people to play this game to develop their own view on it, and not least because despite my few criticisms it is a very strong game to enjoy.

You left-click on an enemy to start swinging your sword. After a few seconds the cursor changes and you left-click again to keep the attack going. Rinse/repeat until you have left-clicked the enemy to death. It feels like a step back from the combat system of the original Diablo....

The massive levels in this game and the fact that there is really no fast travel system makes it a chore to get from place to place for quests and other tasks.
However, the story content, characters, and player choices in gameplay (that have immediate and deferred consequences) make it all worthwhile. Overall, it was an incredible experience to play, although it still runs less than adequately on modern systems.

Second, it's not afraid to be dark and realistic in its themes. As an adult, I want tough, no-win choices, I want realistic violence, I want shades of grey in the story, I want dark humor, I want sex/nudity, and I want deep, interesting characters. The Witcher has all of that.

The Witcher is a worthy entry into the series and a good precursor to the amazing game that is The Witcher 2.

Probably because that was their exact case.

The Witcher 1 is ok to look at(terrible glitches on hair physics that make a lot of characters look extra stupid though) and has some nice musics, but the distance between its world and storyline quality and its gameplay is appalling.

The former deserve high praise, although few characters are all that good, they all decidedly give you the same vibe of a powerful, living breathing world, which is the star of this game. The storyline is exciting and you do root for Geralt's quest and success as he braves constant adversity with seemingly neither fear nor anger. He is a great hero.

But for all the praise here, the terrible downer that is the gameplay gets stronger with every quality in the story.
    It's bad.
Poorly designed, stock and uninventive, no not even uninventive, because the very concept of invention is utterly absent here. Literally every single last quest, except the main storyline one, is a fetch quest. EVERY SINGLE QUEST.

    Meet character x. x needs item a. Go find characters y, w, and z, to find a.
The line I just wrote defines almost every single quest of the game.

More than that, combat is very very weak and uninteresting, locations and level design is very nice but the backtracking is weighing on the game horrendously, and in general the strong feeling of being part of an interactive book absolutely does not leave me throughout the whole game.

A more modern game with this much plot and this little gameplay might've ended up a VN rather than an RPG. That's how little good gameplay there is in this.

The gameplay is very in depth, aside from sword fighting there are also spells that allow players to make more choices in a fight.
Alchemy is fun in ways that you could explore and make your very own potions. This allow the player to explore and discover their own way of playing the game which I really like.

    Cons:
The major reason why this game is just good and not great is to do with the movement and animation.
    1) Too much running around. Yes I know this is the consequence of having a large map but this game needs more fast travels. In a 60 minute gameplay you'll find yourself spending at least 20 minutes running around with your middle finger on the w key.
    2) Fight mechanism isn't as engaging as it could be. All you do is just click at certain times. They should at least allow you to crouch, jump & block etc. The fighting mechanisms are sometimes quite glitchy. For example, if you and the enemy attack at the same time, you may only see your enemy receiving your attack and flinch after getting hit. However, the truth is his attack that happened at the same time will also be registered, if your hero doesn't parry he will take damage.

Overall these are just minor problems and are easily outweighed by all the good components of the game. I strongly recommend this game to anyone who are willing to try a new genre and are willing to learn. Trust me it's worth it.

The combat reminds me of MMO combat, where you click on your enemy, and you attack. The combat here is deeper than that, but not by mutch. But once you begin exprerimenting with alchemy, it gets much deeper. With the right combination of potions, blade oils and bombs, you can make a hard fight much easier and funnier. You can also upgrade your fighting moves.

The worst part about this game in my eyes, is the walking. The map is quite huge, especially when you have to walk everywhere, from quest to quest. This made me feel like I was wasting time. The cutscenes are also quite awkward, but the story makes up for it.

But the best part about this game is the story, watching you decisions have consequenses. The choises you make, feel like they matter.

I spent 50 or so hours on this game, I always do sidequests and such, but the main story is about 30 give or take.

All in all, great game with great characters, and the end make me so pumped to play though the next one :)

The storyline(s) are all actually interesting (unlike most other RPGs I've played), not because of the overarching goal (kill bad guy), but because of the way you can watch it develop, if you give it attention. Not "Will you eat the baby or give it candy and love" sorts, more like "Will I help the sociopathic terrorists being about racial equality and end persecution or will I help the religious zealots bring stability and order?". Decisions can be hard and have consequences impacting the rest of the game. Every choice you make can very well leave you thinking "Am I helping the right people here?". Personally, I love it. Probably not so great in terms of replayability (thus the lower score), gameplay can get tedious towards the mid-points of most of the chapters ("cmon mister mayor, don't make me run all the way back to the swamp, I just got back from there..."), but the shortcomings are made up for by the story, easily. It's a game for adults, and I don't mean the much-maligned sex cards. It's a game where the story really matters, where the player must make serious moral choices, where instead of Good and Bad, we have lighter grey and darker grey. The people in the slums swear, and the people in the rich section of town are stuck-up. And the fighting animations are GORGEOUS! They did motion capture with professional stunt men to do the animations for combat, and the player character is amazingly graceful in the beginning. As the game progresses, he goes beyond graceful and becomes downright acrobatic -- there were times when I wished it were possible to automate the fighting so that I could watch it more closely, and I've never thought THAT about a game before! I could go on and on, but I've said enough. This is the best RPG I've ever played, and I've played a LOT of 'em. Expand

The Witcher is the greatest momement in RPG history since Gary Gygax added more sides to his dice. The Witcher team has created a dark, stunningly realised world, full of great characters and satisfying moral choices. A 9+ is the only mark you could give this gaming achievement - its that good. I've since finished it as the Enhanced Edition. It's improved but still far from perfect: the overlapping quest chains can get tangled and be confusing-- sometimes a quest will bug out and be incompletable; the number of NPC models has increased only by a handful; dialogue trees with nonsensical headers have been improved greatly but you still must zone to see a new dialogue if you've done what the NPC wanted and they have something new to say, and you also have to stop your conversation if a NPC gives you a quest, even though they have more dialogue choices available; most of the truly cringeworthy voiceover has been replaced with professional-quality work, although some perfectly fine stuff from the first version was inexplicably replaced with a lesser quality iteration. Anyway, what makes the game truly great and a truly adult one (once you cut through the pretensions to maturity like profanity and casual sexual encounters and dirty playing cards featuring boobies) is the narrative. It is why the game has such a following; I didn't see it their way at first, but they were right. The dialogue is good stuff, and the themes are 'adult' in the real sense of that word: there is no good and evil, only choices. Moreover, the gameplay is old-school cool as well: The Witcher doesn't condescend to hand-hold like nearly every other game of any genre on the market today; you have to pay attention and have patience. No one will explain it all or make it easy for you. Thankfully, in The Witcher, you are not in a vicarious first-person movie in which the gameworld caters to you so much you might as well be a virtual cow in a virtual chute. Oh, and the combat system has a charm all its own; it's a simple single click mechanic that gets more complicated fighting multiple enemies; a skilled player can turn any fight into a slick ballet of death: the motion-captured swordplay, acrobatics (and the gory finishing coup de graces) are loads of fun. But this is getting too long, so I'll say it like this: The Witcher is a flawed masterpiece: 3 parts one-of the-best RPGs-ever made and, regrettably, 1 part bargain bin title. The recent controversial heir to the RPG throne, Oblivion, was technical perfection and a great game in it's own right; but in terms of truly engrossing story and depth, it can't hold a candle to The Witcher. The consequences of your actions are always there to remind you to be careful of what you say and do and the world you play in feels very alive. Its a very dark game with mature themes that do get presented believably and the language is realistically harsh as well. This is very welcome indeed. RPG bliss in all its glory even if it is a fact that you play a predetermined character. Night and day cycles, character schedules, trust and betrayal, neutrality, cause and effect, action and reaction, its all there to be experienced the way the player wishes. You have a place in the world and it shows. The game grafically is dark, gritty, realistic and especially unwelcome. You are always feeling in constant danger which is a good thing. Music is well done and fitting throughout the game and acting performances are also good enough without winning any oscars. They are just universally well done enough to not detract between great - horrible as many other games of the genre tend to do. If you can bypass the initial shock of the bemany style combat system and sink your teeth a little deeper you are sure going to find a game worth of your time and money and now with the Enhanced edition things are even better since most of the serious flaws that plagued the initial release of the game are no more (like loading times who are now at a perfectly acceptable level instead of absolutely unbearable). I'm not as old as Pretty engrossing game. I didn't buy the original because I was on the fence about it. Plus, you can, in fact, buy the original game and upgrade it to enhanced version for free (this saves you about 25 bucks), This is the RPG that really aged with the audience. I'm not as old as some of these guys, but I grew up with FF6-7, Chrono Trigger, etc and as those types of RPGs progressed, they really didn't change much as my tastes mutated in leaps and bounds. I mean, you look at final fantasy and it's basically the same melodrama infested RPG it used to be, just now they take more cues from JPOP and anime (which in my mind is a severe detriment). The Witcher, on the other hand, is far more gritty and real. It's a step above the Oblivions and the Fallouts in its story and setting. The game play and graphics still need some work, and the camera takes some getting used to, but this game is just really engrossing, and it pushes the boundaries of the RPG genre to a more adult oriented ground. The main problem I had with games like Oblivion/Fallout and other types of open world games was the lack of a significantly well made plot. The Witcher has a great plot that really keeps it in the focus instead of throwing it to the backburner. In Oblivion, I really never bothered about the plot, preferring to simply do the Assassin's Guild quests and leaving it at that. In The Witcher, there's no such problem. The Witcher does have a myriad of issues though. I don't really care about loading times on my computer, they're not such a big deal. However, there are issues with the graphics/models; they're not very polished. Reviewers say this is the best the engine can do though, so whatever. Another HUGE problem is the map. It blows really bad. Another issue is the camera. Unlike WoW, where right-clicking and holding will allow you to turn the camera, the mouse in The Witcher simply turns whenever you move the mouse. This is really annoying and causes the user to pause a LOT to mess with inventory instead of doing it on the move. I also didn't find any key for auto run. In short, The Witcher is the next step in the RPG genre as it ages with its player base, and a game no RPG fan should miss out on. Expand

The combat system in the Witcher seems confusing and cumbersome during the first few acts- but once you level up a few times and get used to the quirks to it this ceases to be an issue. The middle levels are quite enjoyable- the gameworld is well developed and reasonably original. The RPG combat and character development is well done and the artwork holds up a half decade after its original release.

Unfortunately the questing is largely fetch quest based. In the latter portions you end up doing a *lot* of back and forth over familiar terrain either grinding monsters or fetching quest items. This was a showstopper for me on the original version- but the enhanced edition vastly decreases the load times and makes this somewhat less tedious.

Not my favorite RPG of recent years- but probably worth the price of a movie ticket if you are a fan of the genre.

The most fun I had was looking for women to seduce, but that got dull quickly. One thing I did appreciate was the lack of a gimmicky morality or alignment system, so I felt free to make whatever choices seemed best, but this was like a cherry on top of a tasteless cake. By the end of the first act I found that I had no real sense of what I was supposed to be doing or why and didn't care about any of the characters, including the protagonist. It has many flaws, and especially today, this game is difficult to recommend. The graphics while still good, are nowhere near modern standards, and the gameplay may seem slow, boring and tedious. Still, it is worth a playthrough, especially if you want to play the Witcher 3. In my opinion, this is a better game and RPG than Witcher 2, considering the 4 year difference.

It has great music and great environmental effects. The combat system is not bad, the fights are dynamic. I like that there aren't millions of quests like Elder Scroll saga. I suppose it has great graphics for the year it was released.

This is a story I have read, watched or played like thousand times, I know that most of people think that is great, but I found a bit boring, maybe after playing The Walking Dead or reading Game of Thrones everything is different... xD

Many people say that this a mature story... I think that it is dark and there is sex in the game xD... but that doesn't mean that is mature. I agree that is cool that the decisions that you make affect the storyline... but this is not new... you can see it in most of rpgs, maybe in this game the choices are more 'mature' or more ethically complex than in other games like Dragon Age o Baldur's Gate, but as I said before... veeery far from Telltale Games choices gaming (maybe is unfair to compare with Telltale Games I know...).

The types of quests are quite repetitive. The cuts between scenes are awful. There are many bugs, and the controls are a bit unresponsive sometimes.

I think this game is quite overrated. I had probably enjoyed it more if people hadn't told me that was a great game. I give it a 7 minus 1 to counterbalance its reputation.

It is unique, does justice to the lore (you will understand if you have read the original fiction) and has some great game play systems. The graphics are sub par with LOTS of annoying clipping, animations are repetitive and lack impact, the questing structure is awful with LOTS OF FETCH QUESTS, limited ability to move about the map that divides open areas into tunnel segments, dialogue is poorly written, voice acting and line delivery variable from acceptable to down right cringe worthy, NPC models are poorly executed and repeat CONSTANTLY. The uniqueness of the game style and setting, use of great mechanics for crafting and skill building are what carry the game along with the general tone of the story and just the concept that make this worth playing ONCE and only once as long as you can stomach traversing the same map, OVER AND OVER AND OVER again. My advice is to watch a play through and if you want the story just watch it as The Witcher 2 is a far superior game.

TL;DNR: 6: Great ideas, adheres to lore and expresses it well, unique game play and RPG elements with acceptable combat. Poorly written dialogue, terrible animation and graphics, stiff and stilted line delivery that goes from acceptable to awful. Only purchase on sale and if you are an RPG hard core player as the fetch quests, poor level design and spending 2/3 of your time crossing a map many, many times makes this game hard to play for long.

Technology/engine: 4: Lots of loading screens, frequent bugs, generally sub par.

AI: 4: Brain dead enemies with the exception of some boss encounters.

Graphics: 4: dated, poorly and inconsistent application, lots of NPC repetition, lots of annoying clipping and generally poor cinematics (except for the opening which is brilliant and one of my favorites).

Sound: 5: Functional with issues of source to distance and inconsistent triggering.

Soundtrack: 5: Standard with little to say about it.

Voice acting: 6: Variable from acceptable to cringe worthy.

Crafting: 8: The alchemy system is great and very well executed.

Customization: 7: Decent play style customization within skill trees.

Gameplay systems: 9: The systems are really well developed with a unique timed combat system, signs (magic), alchemy, NPC interaction and development. This game is to be commended for this aspect and is one of the best in its development cycle but the other aspects pull it down and make it tiresome. The quest structure and level design are what really detract here.

Controls: 7: Serviceable to well done.

Story: 7: It is faithful to the lore and the substance of the story, under the poorly written dialogue and variable voice acting, is really great - its execution is really hit and miss.

The Good: The story is decent. It's not the most original thing ever, but for a video game it's pretty solid. I found most of the characters engaging even if the voice acting is a bit stiff much of the time and the dialogue can be hilariously bad. The graphics of this game are also very good for when it came out. The world you explore is very good looking, if a bit cramped. Monster design if interesting and often original. I found the potions system to be in depth and challenging; allowing players to manage different ingredients to get the same potion. The music is comprised of catchy little medieval tunes, except when you have a boss fight and it switches over to heavy metal for some immersion breaking reason.

The Bad: Combat. Even after I got used to the combat it was still very unresponsive and unsatisfying. I died more times than I can remember just because Geralt would not respond to commands. He would just stand there and get his butt kicked. And I'm not talking about stun locks or anything, he just would not move. Even when Geralt would successfully attack, it always felt like I was just swing my sword through the air (sometimes I was and it still counted as a hit). There is no feeling of impact to the combat. Also, the dodge move is incredibly unreliable. The missions get to be a bit of a mess as well. I had almost 20 missions going on at one time and the game doesn't indicate which ones you can make progress on or not. More times than I can count, I would be looking for a character in the places they normally were only to find out that they had disappeared or moved to another place for no reason. This brings me to the map. The map often points to areas where your objective is, but then there's nothing there. The map is confusing and sometimes detrimental.

The Ugly: Game play suffers for the story, which comes off as pretentious. On about 5 different occasions, twice during boss fights, the game decides to have a cut scene DURING A FIGHT and when it fades back in, you are getting beaten to death and can't do anything about it. It's like CD Projekt forgot they were making a video game. I "failed" quite a few missions because I didn't do them in the exact order the game wanted. Not that there was ANY indication that there was an order in which they needed to be completed or that I was going to a point of no return. This game had more frustrating WTF moments in it than anything I've ever played. The system in which you collect naked lady cards every time you bang a chick. Classy. It literally objectifies women, which is odd because one of the main characters in the game is an independent and well developed female. The Witcher also crashes a lot. I'm running it on a powerful rig, Windows 7 64 bit, and it crashed at least once every time I played it. No file corruptions though.

Verdict: "The Witcher" is often called "a thinking man's RPG". I'd say it's more of an OCD fan boy's RPG. Looks like I got run over by the hype train. Not recommended.

But after playing it for a few hours, I have to admit that I regret buying it even at the discounted price. It's true; parts of the game look great, even two years after its release. The long opening sequence is excellent, and the character animation in that scene is expressive and nuanced. The graphics in-game are great as well, especially the human characters who are all very detailed and different--no cut and pasted or randomly generated facial features; they were all carefully and personally designed. The story may be good, although I have to admit I didn't see enough of it to judge adequately. The music is rich and dramatic, the voice acting is good, though not outstanding. The game has quite a lot going for it. The problem is the combat, and for a role playing game where combat makes up the majority of the action, a boring combat system is a fatal flaw. This is how combat works: you left click on an enemy. You watch as your character takes a few swings and you try to click during the final swing. If successful, then you watch as your character takes a few more swings. If unsuccessful, then your character pauses for a moment and you have to click on the enemy again to start the process again. While you do have three different combat stances, and you can purchase new moves, these are merely cosmetic differences; in combat, the process is always the same. Click... wait... watch for the last swing... now click again... wait again... and click. Repeat. Then repeat again. Then repeat again. Then repeat again. You are going to spend a lot of time doing this throughout the game. The bottom line: the fighting in Witcher is so boring that it actually made me long for the comparatively exciting monotony of the Diablo-style, "click-as-fast-as-you-can" hack and slash. Add to this huge flaw the fact that you are always rooted to the ground (no jumping, no climbing, no ducking... a knee-high brick is as insurmountable an obstacle as a towering mountain) and are mostly rooted to a linear map system, and the result is a dry, repetitive game... even if it is superficially appealing. If you're more interested in high production values than gameplay, or if you feel the need to get every RPG released, then you may be interested in this game. But if you're deciding between it and another game of the same type, you might want to give it a pass. Expand

I am sure when the Witcher first came out, it was something that was consider above average as far as games went. A decade later this game is really starting to show it's age. I am not novice when it comes to classic RPG's on the PC, you'd be speaking with someone who played games such as Ultima, Planescape

I am sure when the Witcher first came out, it was something that was consider above average as far as games went. A decade later this game is really starting to show it's age.

I am not novice when it comes to classic RPG's on the PC, you'd be speaking with someone who played games such as Ultima, Planescape Torment, Fallout and many other classic RPGs.

When first getting into the Witcher, I found that the game simply felt clunky, even in the beginning. There is a tutorial that explains the basics, but a lot of times, it appears to miss the finer elements of the game. A great example is the combat. I figured 'left clicking' a target would engage in combat, I assumed you'd continue to fight until the fight was done, it wasn't later until I found out you need to continue to click. I am not talking about 'combat chains' or the like, I mean simply attacking your target.

The need to change your 'combat style' based on targets seemed excessive. I undrstand that a stronger attack VS foes with better armor would be a better strategic choice, but I noticed that unless you change combat stances VS your foes, you'd be at a significant disadvantage, unfortunately this ultimately feels like a 'rock, paper, scissors' style of combat, that I felt simply made the combat mechanic annoying at best.

As I played the game, the movement felt odd. At one point in the game you are told to rest. I spent some time wandering around a small room, trying to figure out what I needed to do, until I finally realized that, talking with the NPC, there was an icon off to the side that allowed you to 'meditate' in order to level your character and progress the story line. Normally I wouldn't have an issue with this mechanic, but it was never clear enough, to the point I needed to look online for guidance. Further, there were MANY people online who were having the same issues, this cements my opinion that some of the decisions the game developers came up with were confusing, at best.

The quest tracking system can be not only confusing, but clunky as well. I was finding that often times, even while I was on an active quest, unless I went out of my way to go into my journal and highlight a quest and 'track' the quest, the game wouldn't show me where my next object was.

While playing the game, I ran into multiple occurrences of the game simply crashing or black screening on me, forcing me to quit the game, only to discover the auto-save system saved me behind several sequences in a quest, forcing me to do them all over again. This isn't okay.

I don't know if I am getting too old for these types of games, if The Witcher is simply old, or if the overall presentation of The Witcher is awkward, but I wasn't enjoying myself and I found myself becoming frustrated with the amount of icons and menus the game presented. Perhaps in the future I'll give The Witcher another chance, but for the time being, I don't really feel it necessary to allow the game to waste more of my time.

First of all, I must state, I enjoy rpg's and have played nearly all of the highly acclaimed games of the genre to come out in the last 10 years. That being the case, I found it my "civic" duty to try this, seemingly, underrated title. I started the game with an open mind, and was bored out of my skull almost instantly. Deciding to stick it out, because that's what some games take, I continued to press through. I'm very sorry I did it. This game is boring boring boring boring boring boring. I hear people praising it's amazing story. It's an okay story,I suppose, but all you need to do is open "A Game Of Thrones" by George R. R. Martin to find a 100% better, mature, engaging story. The combat is uninspiring and overall some of the worst I've seen in a video game so highly acclaimed. The npc's all look the flipping same, it's just silly. I don't want to walk up to a guy and see his exact twin x300 walking in the background. It ends up completely ruining the atmosphere for me. I'm giving this game a three because of the Biowareesque choice system. It really matters what you do, and it doesn't actually give you a specific moral code you have to follow. That is true choice. All in all though one good part doesn't make this game worthwhile. I wouldn't advise playing this game. Expand

The main adventure still has serious pacing problems, combat's still too easy for the most part, and load times -- though reduced -- continue to get in the way of the action.
  2. The new and improved package is increasingly attractive. There are still some rough edges, and moments of genuine drama are still undercut by how they're performed, but this is an agreeably driven RPG in an agreeably ornate package.

Finally, The Witcher fulfills its potential, and, best of all, it's available as a free update, just in case you bought it anyway. [Nov 2008, p.110]
