I picked up The Witcher recently and was pleasantly surprised to find the Enhanced Edition was a free upgrade (not bad for $10 bargain bin purchase). The setting, based on Polish fantasy books, is very dark and intriguing. I

The Witcher Enhanced game uses the Bioware engine made famous from games like Dragon Age or Knights of the Old Republic. For some people that might be enough info to stick this game in the bin - for me it should have been.

The game starts with an excellent intro and then you go through a tutorial section where many of the games systems are played though. The story was quite different than the normal D&D realms as it has an Eastern European influence and the world is gritty, racist, sexist etc. Quite adult sometimes, it is not a family game. You can encounter Elves and Dwarves in your travels and a varied array of monsters. The graphics and sound are pretty good. Nightime can really scare the pants of you and the effects of water, the style of buildings etc is pretty good.

Witchers are specialist monster hunters that have been through extreme training that has somehow changed their biology. They can craft potions and use magic. Combat is interesting, a timed clicking experience to build up attacks. Silver weapons work better on monsters and steel is better for humans. There are three diffent styles of fighting depending on whether your opponent is large and slow, quick or if you are fighting a group. Alchemy was completly incomprehensible in the earlier version but has been updated now and easier to manage. Easier, not easy. Everywhere you go plants can be harvested for ingredients and then made into potions. Although, before you can do that the recipe must be known. Oh - and you can get drunk and stumble around for a while. Sometimes you can even acquire key objectives through getting drunk.

First time around I could not for the life of me figure how to rest or make potions. The "Enhanced" version makes this easier and you normally have to find a fireplace where you can medidate, level up and create potions.

I did like the journal where you have to learn about certain things before you can action it in game. For example, reading a book about zombies will allow you to recognise how to beat them in combat and then what part of their bodies can be harvested for alchemy or profit. That is a neat idea which I liked. The auto map is pretty decent and sometimes you have the option to flag quest objectives on the map where help you go where you must.

Now, I tried to play this game a long time ago and gave up in chapter one. This time around I have decided to give it a good go and now have given up in chapter two - no more chances!

The game is simply not fun. It feels like a hard day's work after you come home from a hard day's work. I really tried to persevere as in those other Bioware games but just could not do it. The game environment just breaks the illusion too many times. In other games, the limits of the engine is normally visible at the edges, to places you wouldn't want to go or where it makes sense you can't go. In this game the limits of the engine just slap you in the face every five minutes. Now, the journal is pretty good and can help you navigate the various quests. It is easy to go back and check the bestiary to remind yourself of what style to use against certain monsters etc

What killed the game for me apart from the engine was that the over reliance of having to do something or talk to someone at a certain time or in a certain sequence - otherwise you are doomed to go from point A to B to C to D in an eternal loop trying to figure out which objective out of 500 objectives is the one that must be completed before all the others. Hours of trawling through Witcher Wiki suggests talking to certain people about certain things which then don't come up in game.

You have a quest to kill Zombies which pays handsomely.
You can't get into the graveyard as it is off limits.
You can get into the graveyard by clearing the debts of the undertaker or getting a city pass.
You can't clear the debts without talking to Ms S
Ms S won't talk to you unless you meet her at point (X,Y,Z) at the precise time and location
Old hag won't let you see Ms S unless you do something.
To get a City Pass you must solve a murder involving 3-4 people.
To clear one person you must get into the location where there are Zombies.
    Go to the top.

Not quite how it is - but that is is how it feels - but with five thousand lines and consequnces. Otherwise the game is completely bugged and can't keep track of it's own quests. Now, I started playing a game called Arx Fatalis which some people say is the spiritual successor to Ultima Underworld. The graphics are a bit naff, the controls taking a while to get used to - but for some reason I am enjoying the game. What is going on?

You left-click on an enemy to start swinging your sword. After a few seconds the cursor changes and you left-click again to keep the attack going. Rinse/repeat until you have left-clicked the enemy to death. It feels like a step back from the combat system of the original Diablo....

But after playing it for a few hours, I have to admit that I regret buying it even at the discounted price. It's true; parts of the game look great, even two years after its release. The long opening sequence is excellent, and the character animation in that scene is expressive and nuanced. The graphics in-game are great as well, especially the human characters who are all very detailed and different--no cut and pasted or randomly generated facial features; they were all carefully and personally designed. The story may be good, although I have to admit I didn't see enough of it to judge adequately. The music is rich and dramatic, the voice acting is good, though not outstanding. The game has quite a lot going for it. The problem is the combat, and for a role playing game where combat makes up the majority of the action, a boring combat system is a fatal flaw. This is how combat works: you left click on an enemy. You watch as your character takes a few swings and you try to click during the final swing. If successful, then you watch as your character takes a few more swings. If unsuccessful, then your character pauses for a moment and you have to click on the enemy again to start the process again. While you do have three different combat stances, and you can purchase new moves, these are merely cosmetic differences; in combat, the process is always the same. Click... wait... watch for the last swing... now click again... wait again... and click. Repeat. Then repeat again. Then repeat again. Then repeat again. You are going to spend a lot of time doing this throughout the game. The bottom line: the fighting in Witcher is so boring that it actually made me long for the comparatively exciting monotony of the Diablo-style, "click-as-fast-as-you-can" hack and slash. Add to this huge flaw the fact that you are always rooted to the ground (no jumping, no climbing, no ducking... a knee-high brick is as insurmountable an obstacle as a towering mountain) and are mostly rooted to a linear map system, and the result is a dry, repetitive game... even if it is superficially appealing. If you're more interested in high production values than gameplay, or if you feel the need to get every RPG released, then you may be interested in this game. But if you're deciding between it and another game of the same type, you might want to give it a pass. Expand

I picked up the three Witcher games when they were on discount on STEAM.

I am sure when the Witcher first came out, it was something that was consider above average as far as games went. A decade later this game is really starting to show it's age.

I am not novice when it comes to classic RPG's on the PC, you'd be speaking with someone who played games such as Ultima, Planescape Torment, Fallout and many other classic RPGs.

When first getting into the Witcher, I found that the game simply felt clunky, even in the beginning. There is a tutorial that explains the basics, but a lot of times, it appears to miss the finer elements of the game. A great example is the combat. I figured 'left clicking' a target would engage in combat, I assumed you'd continue to fight until the fight was done, it wasn't later until I found out you need to continue to click. I am not talking about 'combat chains' or the like, I mean simply attacking your target.

The need to change your 'combat style' based on targets seemed excessive. I undrstand that a stronger attack VS foes with better armor would be a better strategic choice, but I noticed that unless you change combat stances VS your foes, you'd be at a significant disadvantage, unfortunately this ultimately feels like a 'rock, paper, scissors' style of combat, that I felt simply made the combat mechanic annoying at best.

As I played the game, the movement felt odd. At one point in the game you are told to rest. I spent some time wandering around a small room, trying to figure out what I needed to do, until I finally realized that, talking with the NPC, there was an icon off to the side that allowed you to 'meditate' in order to level your character and progress the story line. Normally I wouldn't have an issue with this mechanic, but it was never clear enough, to the point I needed to look online for guidance. Further, there were MANY people online who were having the same issues, this cements my opinion that some of the decisions the game developers came up with were confusing, at best.

The quest tracking system can be not only confusing, but clunky as well. I was finding that often times, even while I was on an active quest, unless I went out of my way to go into my journal and highlight a quest and 'track' the quest, the game wouldn't show me where my next object was.

While playing the game, I ran into multiple occurrences of the game simply crashing or black screening on me, forcing me to quit the game, only to discover the auto-save system saved me behind several sequences in a quest, forcing me to do them all over again. This isn't okay.

I don't know if I am getting too old for these types of games, if The Witcher is simply old, or if the overall presentation of The Witcher is awkward, but I wasn't enjoying myself and I found myself becoming frustrated with the amount of icons and menus the game presented. Perhaps in the future I'll give The Witcher another chance, but for the time being, I don't really feel it necessary to allow the game to waste more of my time.

Deciding to stick it out, because that's what some games take, I continued to press through. I'm very sorry I did it. This game is boring boring boring boring boring boring. I hear people praising it's amazing story. It's an okay story,I suppose, but all you need to do is open "A Game Of Thrones" by George R. R. Martin to find a 100% better, mature, engaging story. The combat is uninspiring and overall some of the worst I've seen in a video game so highly acclaimed. The npc's all look the flipping same, it's just silly. I don't want to walk up to a guy and see his exact twin x300 walking in the background. It ends up completely ruining the atmosphere for me. I'm giving this game a three because of the Biowareesque choice system. It really matters what you do, and it doesn't actually give you a specific moral code you have to follow. That is true choice. All in all though one good part doesn't make this game worthwhile. I wouldn't advise playing this game. Expand

This just isn't fun. It's not the only flaw in the map design as a lot of the time you're running from somewhere to somewhere else instead of questing or fighting; I did not buy this as a running simulator. The quests tend not to make sense as I keep being told what to do from my journal, which doesn't bear much resemblance to what the quest-giving character has told me. When you drink certain things you're slowed to a snail's pace, unless you've got your sword out... but you're only allowed to draw your sword at night meaning a trudge through molasses until it wears off. On the positive side, the secondary component of herbal ingredients does add a very nice twist to when you make potions and does give you a smile when you find a component that will perfectly complement a certain concoction. Perhaps some day I'll complete the game but since my frustration reaches too high a level after about an hour with this that day will be far off. Expand

Not worth the price. this game is almost identical to Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring as far as gameplay/graphics goes, but i enjoyed LOTR better, and didn't require as much hardware. it's a decent game, but it's definately not epic. it almost reminds me of how every single MMO now-a-days is nearly identical to WoW, making them garbage.

Most aspects of the game seem really good. The story seems really deep, although, i couldn't get past chapter two. But, the combat system is so monotonous and simple that I regret buying it. You just wait for the weapon swing to appear yellow and then you press the left mouse button. After that, you just wait again for that yellowish swing and press the left mouse button. Occasionally, you can throw in a magic attack.

This is why I despise western games. All the male characters follow the same sexist stereotypes with no variety between them. Female characters are more than just breasts and thighs walking around. The lines are horrendous with no depth. Quite a shallow game. There are so many other things wrong, but this above all prevented me from being to enjoy the game.

The game itself is pretty dull, what I could play of it. Hard to believe it got such good reviews from critics. Must be boosting their ratings in an effort to support an indie RPG. While I respect the work that went into this as an indie title. The game's just not fun to play. The story drags while you wander around some little town area. Combat's mostly just click repeatedly on your enemies.

Seeming to be a critically acclaimed game, I picked up the Witcher relatively cheap, expecting to be pleasantly surprised. Instead, I was shocked and numbed into absolute boredom and disgust. In a word, the Witcher is bland.

Dialog is utterly monotonous. Literally. I heard the main character use one tone of voice for nearly the entire game, as well as an utter lack of facial expression.

Combat is paced clicking. Tactics are only present slightly, and you may be required to swing your sword to different patterns if you fight different enemies.

Storyline... An article that RPGs should be known for, considering at their core they should bring the player into playing a role, and making the player feel attached to the game world, it's characters, and it's struggles. However, I found myself not only not feeling attached, but rather bored, and at times disgusted at how a game this bland could achieve critical acclaim. Suffering from "repetitive level syndrome," perhaps is what plagues this game. A wash-rinse-repeat combat system, presenting "complex moral choices," in which everyone is guilty almost always. The storyline, is quite frankly, common. No true surprises await with this title.

A bargain bin game in every sense, the Witcher is great for wasting time installing, uninstalling, and using to collect dust.

    2) You can't hop over waist high fences. I need to say no more on this. It's utterly stupid.
Then in terms of story, character and acting. Oh my word. It's embarrassing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm trying to like this game, I really am, but it's proving to be very difficult. I realize I am playing on hard, but this is just ridiculously... not fun. At the particular part I'm at, it autosaved before a long speech that I have to skip through each time I die, or when the person with me dies (because I saved them, this person dying would obviate the whole point to everything). Right after the long speech is a boss battle. At first I was thinking "Yay, time to put interesting mechanics into a fight instead of the regular click-at-intervals-until-something-dies", but instead, it's the same thing but now you have another person to worry about. On top of all of this, it's pretty vague where or how to do things, and not in the good, find-it-yourself way. It's more of a "walk around the entire map hoping you find where that guy wants you to be." The friend who gifted me this game said it was the best RPG he's ever played... I'm trying to believe him, but I honestly can't find anything good with it. I mean, if you like it, more power to you, but I feel more obliged to play through it just to get to the second one...
Gosh, this review looks unfocused and sloppy... but then, so does this game... Hopefully the second one will be better.

""The Witcher: Enhanced Edition" is really just enhanced garbage. How people can rate this unpolished and mediocre turd of a game so highly is beyond me. The character you play as, "Geralt", is about as interesting as watching paint dry. I couldn't be bothered to give a f*ck about him or anyone else in this game. The side quests are mostly boring fetch quests, and the main quest is boring and unimaginative, plus the way the game handles quests is annoying as hell. Trust me, when you click on "Quests" and 400 quests show up (side quests + main quests mixed all over the place) you just feel like turning the f*cking game off... which I found myself doing quite often. Then there's the sex: every woman in this game wants to have sex with your character (apparently women go crazy whenever they see a guy with long white hair, lizard eyes and no personality whatsof*ckingever (ah, so THAT's what I've been doing wrong all these years, thanks for the tip developers!)) and as a "reward" (besides herpes and god knows what else) you get a "sex card" (you don't actually get to see your character having sex, instead you get to see a card where the woman you just boned shows you her **** Wow... I'm so excited... but I'm sure the 10-year-olds who gave this game an 8 or higher are enjoying themselves. After all, we can't have a "mature" RPG without including sex, can we? Idiots... The graphics looked ugly - after some patching it sill looked bad. The combat was a total disappointment - click, click click and then repeat. After playing around 2 hours I had enough. The rest of mechanics probably had some potential but the game didn't interest me to discover what else it had to offer. Given that I'm not the biggest fan of the world created by Sapkowski I was put off and will never try my luck with this particular title.

For my thoughts, read below, but the tl;dr of it all is while the game seems to have some promise inside it, it is so mindbogglingly bland and uninteresting that I cannot begin to understand the blind, unquestioning love for it.

Graphics. While I usually try to take it easy on games about graphics, I can't even say "Good for it's time" when we had games like BioShock, Unreal Tournament 3 and Crysis in 2007. They're not BAD, but they certainly deserve no praise.

The dialogue. While sometimes well written, it's horribly delivered. It makes the delivery of Dialogue in Baten Kaitos on the gamecube look shining (and while I love BK, the dialogue is pretty iffy at times)

Animations. They are literal crap. That's all I can say. I can't tell if Geralt is trying to brandish his sword threateningly during combat or do a rain dance.

Gameplay. Really this should be #1 on this list considering how much it detracts from the game. Whomsoever decided that rhythm, timing based combat was a good idea should be hung and quartered. There's also the fact that even on normal difficulty, going into a fight with anything more threatening than a single barghest without drinking a Swallow potion is practically suicide. A prime example of this the fight with The Beast. Sure, you may have healing spells cast on you by someone to avoid spoilers, or you will until the Beast stuns you for 6 hours while taking out chunks of your health and oneshotting your help with it's 9000 adds.

Story. While for the most part it seems okay, it seems that they're using Geralt's amnesia as an excuse to troll people who aren't familiar with the world of The Witcher through the books. There's this one part in chapter one where I went to the chapel to turn in some remains for that fat merchant in the inn, then this blue ghost that looks vaguely like The Architect from Dragon Age: Origins pops up, then starts talking to me like we're old friends and yammering about Destiny. I told him to sod off.

Combat lacks a lof of responsiveness. Lots of twirls but almost no feedback on hits, misses, criticals ...
There are really few weapons and armor and most of them are given at end game. So you expend most of the time with the same gear. There are secondary weapons like daggers but are completely useless. I still not understand the logic behind this weapons.
On the other side there are hundreds of crap materials that you are almost not using.
Someone decided it was a good idea to have mission logs that take up half of your inventory. Exactly what you need, more crap in your inventory.

Quests are super annoying. You need to do tasks in a specific and unknown hour with an NPC hidden into the clone army. Then NPCs have the ability to disappear of change its location during quests, so you expend a lot of time searching fro the specific place and time to find someone/something to progress.
