After the gigantic letdown of dragon age inquisition I kept my expectations low for Witcher 3. So it was somewhat of a great relief to find Withcer 3 one of the most fantastic and absorbing games that I have ever played of it's type. Every aspect of the game rolls of the tongue as a solid 10.

Bioware might be a dead donkey but CDPR have risen to take their place as kings of the story

This game is easily worth the money and the time you will spend in it. Now this is a true GOTY, That other one was a joke.

+ unexpectedly well optimised (running on an i5 and 970)
+ excellent monster design (although I miss the old troll model)
+ Gwent is actually enjoyable, to my eternal surprise
+ fantastic in-game bestiary that's worth reading just to enjoy it
+ tracking down schematics, hunting materials and upgrading your specialised gear is very satisfying
~ ...but the convoluted crafting UI will trick you into thinking it's more complicated than it actually is
~ disparity in levelling time between main quests where you'll gain 3 or 4 levels in an hour and side content that has you desperately scraping together that last 50 EXP points
~ combat quickly becomes dull on lower difficulty settings
~ some levelling skills are very obviously better than others
    - some users are reporting major bugs (however after 60 hours of gameplay I've yet to encounter any)
    - main storyline is a tired rendition of good versus evil and lacks the subtlety and intrigue of its predecessor (though it's undeniably more welcoming to newcomers)

    I don't normally give 10s for anything but I can't give a 9.5 and it's worth so much more than a 9.

A few tips: turn off hair effects, you'll notice a framerate improvement of 10-15FPS immediately. Play on one of the higher two difficulties; it's intimidating at first but you'll find it much more satisfying. Pick up every quest you can; even if you're 20 levels too low you can always come back later. Don't feel pressured to go everywhere and do everything right away; every village you come across will have enough content to keep you going for at least an hour or two. Invest your first few skill points into Axii: Delusion, it's helpful in dialogues.

And finally, if in doubt: spam Igni.

The reason for the ten score, is that very few games can move me to this degree. I just finished it and I don't really have words. It's not a perfect game, but there aren't any perfect ones really. And yet this one is close enough. I'm thoroughly and completely satisfied, and once they reach the end of the hunt, I believe most people will be as well.

I wish I could offer a more substantial review to potential buyers, but there's so much to do and see, so much variety, quests, interactions, even very small things and side-quests have consequences and interactivity later on in the game. Graphics are incredible and optimized. The narrative is the best you can hope for. OST is gorgeous. There's no way to really fit everything in this review so I won't even try - it's a unique game.
What I can say for sure is this: if you can invest any emotion in the main characters, any at all, this game will have blown you away when the credits start rolling. At its core the game is about its characters. If you don't like them, you probably won't like the rest. If you do - you'll love it. CD Projekt has stated this will be Geralt's last voyage. The developers will most likely never see what I wrote, but I want to give them a message anyway:
Thank you for letting this world go in the most satisfying way there can ever be. Thank you. It's probably the best game I've ever played.

The Witcher 3 is the perfect example of RPGs done right. Your decisions really matter, combat is challenging but not overly punishing, and the stories and side quests are absolutely top notch.

It's like a large long book with awesome short stories to boot. 40 hours in, and I have yet to get bored with anything: whether its running through the landscape, talking to people, resolving people's monster problems, having fun with sex, killing bad guys etc. It's just perfect.

This game is IMMERSIVE and the new standard bearer for open world RPGs/ video games. It will be hard for future RPGs to justify their existence.

Thank you CDPR for creating this magnum opus.

Sure, the game "suffered" from a graphic downgrade compared to the 2013 E3 footage but it was that or the game wouldn't be able to run on either PS4 nor One and on very little range of PCs, a bad for a good you might say. The Game is very good looking on Ultra Setting PC, the general writting of the game is very good (main story aswell as secondary quests) supported by great voice acting and truly impressive & believable facial expressions. The combat and class system is as good as it could get from my opinion, with somme issues but nothing really bothering. The world is huge, and when i say huge, it's HUUUUUUGE (And absolutely no loading whatsoever except at dying, launching and moving from a continent to an other. Truly feels great + The loading are never longer than 5sec at worst 10sec if you got a good machine like me) . I'm at 130h of gameplay right now (on High difficulty & Main story finished) and must have done atleast 90% of the total game. And clearly, i'm in for another ride with a new game.
So go and grab the game already because it clearly deserves your money...

PS : Little +1 for the notre left inside the pre-order box at the attention of the player to say thanks for pre-ordering the game. Now watching Bethesda for that higly probable Fallout 4 or TES 6. Set the standard i said...

I have to say though, I'm far from disappointed with the game. I has a lot going for it : a great story line with convincing characters set in a masterfully well designed world. The ambiance and setting in general are really impressive, the attention to detail in this war torn country is incredible. I personally thoroughly enjoyed almost every single quest (from all the different witcher contracts to the intricate main quest). I spent way too much time roaming the countryside, speaking to everyone I could, playing the most interesting minigame ever created (seriously it's pretty much a game in itself), and of course, reaching every one of those tantalizing question marks. The way all these activities flow together is truly amazing, there are rarely any loading screens except when quick traveling, even buildings are pre-loaded and can be enter or left without even pressing a button, and horse riding from one place to another is actually quite enjoyable.
From the graphics point of view, although not quite as optimized as I might have hoped for, they are still quite stunning and again, CDProjectRed's attention to detail really shines.
What's left is the core game-play mechanic : combat. This is why this game doesn't really deserve a perfect 10 in my book (although still one of the best games I've played in my life). It's solid and functional, especially with the new key assignment freedom, I'd even go as far as to say it really enjoyable(cutting heads and torsos off is brutally satisfying), however, it lacks the creative innovation that the rest of the game shows. It doesn't have the occasional variety of Dragon Age Inquisition (with its numerous combat options), or the tactical precision of Dark Souls, or better yet, the awesomeness and innovation of Dragon's Dogma (I pray for the day game devs integrate DD's combat mechanics into alltogether better games..... what a shame it is that you can't climb on a fiend or an earth elemental and wack it to death). It serves it's purpose as it is occasionally challenging and stays interesting with different upgrades, skills and items, but its a good thing there's much more to do in the Witcher 3 (and that the game is not really all that about combat).
All in all I was really impressed by this game, it's very immersive, fun, deep and interesting. It does have a few flaws but the rest of the game clearly makes up for them, and more.

Nevertheless, the game is great. The graphics are great, the stories are interesting and the world looks so beautiful, away from pure technology. The aesthetic of the world is mind-boggling.

If you like adult fantasy worlds and have no problem with the given figure of Geralt (in many RPGs you can often create thecharacter yourself) and also do not expect a great but solid skill system, you have to play this game. Alone the card game Gwint in the game you could probably sell for 7-10$ on Steam (if it had a multiplayer mode ^^) and it would please.

The controls are good with a controller and I recommend that on PC. Maybe they will finetune the mouse and keyboard controls in the future.

So - in spite of the technical problems thatbothered me at the beginnig, I would recommend this game yet, because it justifies even these "hardships".

A grand masterpiece, with some technical problems - the only reason why I cant give a 10.

I don't play games because I want to pretend to eat, drink, and sleep. I don't play games because I want to maintain a piece of **** sword that needs repair after every fight. This game treats me like an abused spouse that has to take out the garbage constantly. Poor level design lead me into situations where I had to laboriously keep playing a boss fight until I could use that last sliver of health correctly. Even if someone has a fix for that, all the other things in this game annoy the living &$)@& out of me so badly that I don't care. I can run faster on foot than my horse!

That hideous child-dwarf model from the beginning of the game haunts my dreams now. Her "adult pretending to be a child" voice is a shrieking nightmare. This game is so amazingly overrated that I feel like I've lost contact with my relationship to humanity.

Potion gnarfling is not a game, it's a reflex.
Item wear is not a game, it's a hole in an economy mechanic.
Crafting is not a game, it is at best a scavenger hunt.
Story is not a game, it's entertainment.
    Dialogue is not a story.
Talking like "I'm batman" all the time does not make a character.
Flirty characters are not a story and are only barely dialogue.

It's like someone took Dresden Files and turned it into GTA...except they forgot the fun.

The Wicher 3 unlike what most sites say is not the Skyrim killer, and personally I vastly prefer the Witcher 3, or even Witcher 2 to Skyrim. Skyrim will always hold a special place in this market of open world RPGs, with it's masterful illusion of choice and complexity. Witcher 3 may not be as great of a thrill-ride as Skyrim, but the amount of depth it contains, certainly far exceeds it. (At least to me)
In conclusion, yeah Witcher 3 is great. Played the hell out of it.

It's these little things that make the Witcher 3 one of the best video game purchases I've ever made, and I've made a lot of them.

Haven't had this great of an experience for a long long time. For a game to be hyped this badly and not only to live up to it, but actually surpass it... gods, it's been ages since that happened. It's basically Game of Thrones just better, and I'm not exaggerating.

As you start getting into the game, you come across one of the best quest-lines I've seen in a video game ever, the one involving the Bloody Baron. I was a bit afraid that it peaked there, but it didn't. The game keeps that level and goes on with it. The main story line is just purely brilliant. And for a 200 hour long game, it never outstays it's welcome, never becomes stale or boring, and after all that time I was left wanting more.

All of this is aided by one amazing combat system. It's a bit difficult to master at first, but once you get the hang of it you'll have a great time. Number of different styles you can specialize towards(and change between, provided you buy the potion to rearrange your talents), whether swords(light/heavy), spells, or alchemy, it helps alleviate the stale that can set in during long open-world games.

Yes, it has a few issues, but they're more like charming character flaws, a really bad case of the popp-in being one, some stuttering issues, few bugs, and crashes(though only in the prologue area for some reason).

The one bad thing, for which I'll take of a point is that(very light spoiler ahead):

If you spent weeks trying to get the perfect Witcher 2 save file to import into your game, well... tough luck, CDP Red dropped the ball on that... badly. Some might get a mention, but some very big ones don't even get that honor.

    (/end spoiler).

But they make up for it by how they handle choices in the game itself. No longer are choices in the good/evil dichotomy, nor are they in the bad/worse dichotomy. Instead they're multifaceted, interesting, and good god will they nag at you: did you make the right one, I wonder what'll happen to them, is doing the right thing, the right thing?.. etc. And their consequences, whether immediate or not are laid out exquisitely, even for the smallest of side-quests. It's just mind-blowing.

Yeah, buy this game, and if the game's any indication: buy the season pass as well, then a lifetime subscription to whatever CRPRed makes. I know I will.

The story and quests are carefully crafted and over many interesting twists along its very long path, often leading the player into finding new side quests or contracts. Each town has a board which uncovers many explorable areas, these are the time consuming part of Witcher 3, of course you don' t have to do these but you'll be missing out on plenty of loot and gold.

The major issues with Witcher 3, besides the high system demands are fairly easy to describe, the swimming controls are fairly poor, the crossbow is fairly useless on land, but instantly kills monsters underwater.. and gwent is a major mess.

Gwent needs plenty of rebalancing and patches to be really a viable source of fun, I'm sure other people could argue that but lets face facts, the developers messed up the Gwent mini-game - Its a source of major frustration, many AI players blatantly cheat and the outcome of the game more or less is decided before you even play, far too many peasants or basic gwent players have overpowered decks with multiple hero cards, which 'always' appear - where as, your best cards hardly ever appear. A gwent card seller mod needs to be created to bypass this terrible system.

The biggest concern is that the developers are going to sell Gwent DLC packs, because getting better gwent cards is nearly impossible, you get a few quests to face seasoned players which will award you with some better cards, but some of these matches again - are a frustrating mess when the AI throws out some nearly perfect card combinations, forcing the player to retry the match over and over again. Unfortunately, little strategy can be used because the AI uses far too many cheap tricks, making the whole mini-game far less fun, and more of an exercise in patience.

    Pro

    Highly immersive gameplay
    Great Graphics
    Many quests
    Exploration is rewarded
    Fun combat
    good crafting system

    Con

    Swimming controls are awkward
    Highly flawed gwent system
    Heavy system resource demands
    Buggy quests

Not only is this the best RPG in years, its cast of characters are so real that it will make going back to the saccharine crud the other "pillars" in the RPG space keep giving us ever so painful. The Witcher 3's greatness, ironically, is ruining me from gaming in general.

I'm on my second playthrough now. The first was 35 hours and 16 minutes, with all of White Orchid, ~60% of Velen, and maybe 20-30% of Skellig's POIs completed. This time, I intend to attempt to do EVERYTHING. Though, even with leaving all the content on the table in playthrough one, I felt overpowered for the end boss fights (second hardest difficulty).

There's always room for improvement, and the combat has always been-imo-the weakest aspect of RPGs in general, and that's true for the Witcher series as well (though, kudos to the idea of weaknesses and preparation). Eventually, we're going to start seeing RPGs that have the type of depth of combat that action games like Arkham have (though, let's face it, there's no reason the Arkham series shouldn't be considered an RPG). If I was conditioned by decades of RPGs only paying lip service to combat as a vehicle to drive a narrative, I'd probably be worked up about this, but I'm not.

Technically, I do wish the draw distance was better, but whatever. It's Witcher 2, but Witcher 1's epic scope; really, it's the hybrid baby of the two games and it is fantastic.

I was horrified when they originally said they were going to make this an open world game. Every single open world game is just a bunch of pointless (often times randomly generated) content to keep adhd people sated, while making grandiose claims that one's game is epic and massive. I thought the great story and lore of the Witcher series was going to meet a fiery doom, and that the Witcher 3 would be just another Skyrim/Fallout/etc. Lots of POIs, complete lack of heart and feels. Boy, was I wrong. It never made any sense that a story-focused game couldn't work in an open world. It never made any sense that we-as gamers-always had to choose a story-focused game that was basically a corridor with little to no freedom, or an open world game that had little to no story. CDPR finally proved you can have your cake and eat it.

Lastly, as a gamer in his 30s, I wanted to finish with high praise for the dialog/relationships between Geralt and the people in his life (especially Yennefer and Ciri). Those were some genuinely great moments and lines (on everyone's part). I hate to use the term "mature", but there was a maturity in the approach to dialog in a relationship that is so, so, sooooooooo rarely seen in a video game.

I hope there is some other unheard of studio out there that will blow my socks off in the next few years, because other than CDPR's next project (Cyborg2077), I can't see a future where anything from the established big players like Bioware/Bethesda/etc will be capable of getting my motor running.

One of the best games ever made. Especially as an open world. I have spent hours and hours just running around observing interesting aspects of the world. Animals just like people sleep/hunt at specific times of the day. Go to a cave and a werewolf may only appear after sunset. Go to the same cave during the day and it will be completely empty and you can loot the interesting items within. One of the best games ever made. Especially as an open world. Go to a cave and a werewolf may only appear after sunset. Go to the same cave during the day and it will be completely empty and you can loot the interesting items within. Too often its easy for developers to artificially insist on blocks to prevent getting rewards without fighting the monster. This is the first game which sticks to the law. If you can exploit the world, you should be able to get your reward. This is just one of the many examples of how this world has been finely crafted. Even simple side quests have a level of emotional investment that make them interesting. Its the little threads, the extra attention which has made this probably one of the most memorable games in recent times. A true landmark for this age on how current technology can be leveraged for entertainment. This is second only to the world of GTA 5. In some cases, it may be even better. The combat has been improved as well. It is a lot more responsive. It can be as hard as you want it to be. For veterans I suggest atleast the blood and broken bones. It makes you care enough to read the beastiary and prepare for the encounters ahead. It makes you care about weaknesses. This is the true way to play the witcher 3. No other game has had such deep combat with an addictive and immersive world.
On the negatives, the removal of a storage system, limitations on skills, lack of consistency with movement (Why not go the extra distance and add animations for picking up objects ..given there is delays in changing direction) and random physics bugs of rag doll objects are annoying, yet minor issues when compared to everything this game gets right.
Sometimes, its good to look over the few negatives and enjoy the spectacle and get immersed in an adventure that has been lovingly crafted. DO it with the witcher 3 and pay attention to the details to truly enjoy this game.

The Witcher series has always told great stories. Likewise, the combat has always been terrible. The Witcher 3 is a great story and an even a better game than the first two. Sometimes I give a 10 to counter the 0s... this is a true 10/10 experience. If you love RPGs and brilliant storytelling in an expansive open world.. well, this is the best game I've ever played that covers all of these aspects.

It's right up there with Mass Effect as my favourite RPG of all time, it's sad, it's exhilarating, it's The best Witcher game that anyone could have ever made.

First let me say that I have not played the Witcher 1 and dropped the Witcher 2 because the gameplay and combat was boring and lack luster. Loving the game so far. Good story, great graphics, lots of things to do. Best open world game I've played. I have had no problems running this on my PC, which is surprising given the quality of the graphics. The Witcher 3 says no to all of this - it's a great game with a fully realized setting, it's a joy to play, the business model behind it treats its customers like human beings, and it delivers a story that finally hits the tone of the books.

Probably the best open-world RPG ever made, but it still falls prey to some of the genre's worst traps.

I've made it pretty clear that it's hardly a flawless game, but that doesn't change the fact that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is something pretty bloody special and you should absolutely play it.
