A fun, but very short game. It looks like a Portal clone, and mixes in Talos Principle style philosophy, but never equals it's inspirations. The puzzles and metaphysics were both simplistic. Would be worth a buy during a 50% off sale.

An excellent puzzle game that definitely draws inspiration from other classics in the genre such as Portal and The Talos Principle (there are even a few direct nods to the latter if you look close enough). The game could have beem a bit more challenging in my opinion, however, as the different puzzles (with a few exceptions) rarely took more than a few minutes to solve. Even some of the later ones seemed a bit rushed and too easy to solve, but again, it could just be me. There were also some audio logs which were barely audible (subtitles don't show up for the logs either for some reason) and some odd spelling/grammatical mistakes in the texts here and there, but that's just nitpicking.

Great game overall, be sure to check it out if you want some brain exercise coupled with an interesting story!

This is Talos Principle and Portal, mashed together but only doing what made those two games great half as well. That's the review, nothing more needs to be said. If you enjoyed the two aforementioned games and fancy playing a mish-mash of the two done really averagely, here's your game.

Expand

Love a game that challenges you enough without taxing you too much, nice story, good computer/character interaction. The game offers a taste of history if you have the patience to read the docs you find. I give it a 9 out of 10.
Bringing Alan Turing and Ada Lovelace together is the perfect computer history story!

The Turing Test is yet another first person puzzle game where the player is stuck in a strange environment with a possibly malevolent “mission control” (yet another AI, this time), solving a series of puzzles to try and navigate through an environment.

In this case, you are controlling a woman called Ava Turing, who is being commanded by TOM, the AI of the mission, to go down to the surface, reacquire communications with the crew (which is rebelling against him), and to eventually help him to stop the crew from escaping Europa with an organism they found there which potentially threatens life on Earth.

The core story here is actually fairly decent – the premise of the tests being set up to prove you are human (as they are designed to keep out TOM, the AI, but not Ava, the human), as TOM is not programmed to be creative (in fact, he is specifically programmed not to be, making him inflexible and rigid – exactly what the mission needs in its AI). As you go through the tests, TOM and Ava talk about the Turing Test, the Chinese Room, and various other ideas about free will and whether or not AIs are really “intelligent”. TOM himself seems to argue both sides when convenient; he claims he is nothing more than a calculator, but clearly has feelings and emotions and gets angry when treated like nothing more than a machine.

There’s a twist about halfway through the story; I had thought it was going to be either that the whole thing was a simulation (i.e. none of it was real, it was all a test of the AI to determine how it would respond to a situation like this) or that it was going to just repeat the Bioshock plot twist straight up. Instead it went for something a bit new, which I liked, as while I’ve thought about that particular twist before, I’ve never seen a game actually do it.

Sadly, while the twist ultimately unlocks the last gameplay element, the gameplay element of looking through cameras and controlling robots and triggering switches through them is something that Watch Dogs did several years ago. And given that the other puzzle mechanics of the game are standing on switches, putting heavy things on switches, and grabbing and manipulating balls of light from a distance to put into power slots to power things… it ain’t exactly the most innovative game ever.

Indeed, the actual puzzle gameplay is just not very good. The rooms are thankfully very short, each relying on a particular bit of lateral thinking, and are mostly quite simple puzzles, with only a few really being all that long. This is mostly a good thing, but it ultimately makes the game feel a bit shallow – I never got any great sense of achievement or reward for solving the puzzles, and most of them were very easy. There were 77 puzzles in all in the game, and overall it took me about 6 hours to 100% it.

And I have to say, even on top of that, I wasn’t overly fond of the characters, either. TOM at least has some personality, but Ava is pretty bland, and by the end of it, I never really identified a single major character trait from her. The other characters – who you get to hear the audio logs of – are not particularly interesting either, with only the captain feeling like he has more than one note to his personality. And even TOM doesn’t always feel like he is written all that consistently – he argues with the crew about how he is really a person, and argues with Ava about how he isn’t. While him being two-faced and untrustworthy is a big part of the plot, it would have been nice for him to more directly acknowledge his own hypocrisy – instead, not even the characters arguing with him do so.

The result was that this game didn’t really touch me. It had a couple interesting ideas in its story and playing with its medium as a game, but as a game, it felt dull, uninspired, and unoriginal, without any memorable gameplay or setpieces. While it tries to be philosophical, it is nowhere near the level of something like The Talos Principle, and while the sterile testing environment (and some of the elements, like the switches and light bridges) are reminiscent of Portal, it is lacking in the character of those games as well.

Ultimately the game as a whole just ends up being rather flat. It never really did anything particularly interesting with itself, the story isn’t good enough to be worth playing through the game for, and the characters aren’t memorable. Is it terrible? No. But it doesn’t excel in any way.

You’ve got better things to do with your time and money than play this game.

I was disappointed by the ending of the game. through the game you would expect something bigger than whats coming. It wasn't surprising at all, you could expect that from the middle of the game.
Except that, the puzzles weren't that hard and u could finish the game in few hours, so im not sure if its worth the full price, maybe if its on a sale.

When we get snippets of dialogue between Ava and Tom, this is supposed to highlight an engaging debate about the capabilities and limitations of AI and humans, yet the arguments posited from both sides are weak and unconvincing. I also should mention that the setup of the story is pretty weak as well. The whole notion that an extremophile organism with DNA repair capacity somehow definitively translates to immortality for all life-forms is pretty ridiculous.

The mechanics were introduced well though, so that it's fairly unlikely to not feel comfortable with them. The puzzles themselves were OK, but also pretty uneven. Most were very simple and short (some, even towards the end, made me go "what? already?), but now and then there was a really long and fairly difficult one. It felt like the progression wasn't smooth at all.

The story behind the gameplay, philosophical to a large extent, clearly had a lot of thought put into it, but ultimately felt rather shallow and disappointing, especially towards the end. The AI's main accusation of Ava Turing was that she's naive, and I couldn't agree more. The game is very pleasing visually too, with colourful lighting effects much to my liking, and a neat dynamic implementation of pupillary light reflex.

All in all, fairly entertaining for a few hours, if you're not in an overly demanding mood. I wouldn't say it's worth the full price though, considering you can get something like The Witcher 3 on sale for less.

I was way off about what I expected from The Turing Test. For some reason I expected it to be a walking sim. What I got was a puzzle game like Portal but with a much better story. What I got was a puzzle game like Portal but with a much better story. The story is fantastic and if you like sci-fi will be worth it all by itself. Luckily the gameplay is good and kept me engaged enough regardless. Communication has been lost with a crew of astronauts on Europa and an AI, Tom, and human, Ava, must venture there to figure out what went wrong. The crew has setup a series of rooms that you will have to solve various puzzles in order to advance. After each room there is back and forth between Ava and Tom as both figure out what went wrong and how to solve the issues at hand. You solve the puzzles by using energy cores to open doors, taking control of cameras and bots to manipulate pressure pads and electric locks. One thing I liked was how the game sometimes would throw you a curveball and provide you with tools for the toom that you didn’t require. I spent extra time trying to figure out how it wanted me to use a cube or camera that wasn’t needed. It kept me on my toes. I kind of predicted the possible endings a ways before it happened but it didn’t spoil the fun. The game doesn’t give any long winded explanation about how things played out after the game was done which leaves me to fill in my own ideas which I enjoy.

The graphics are fairly decent. There is a nice clean and crisp style going on which reminds me of 70’s scifi movies that use a lot of blends of white and primary colors. They won’t wow you but they are far from an eye sore. The soundtrack is great and really complimented what was happening well. The voice acting was well done all around but Tom was especially great and provided the right blend of dull logical voices you expect from a computer combined with a hint of emotion at times.

I played The Turing Test on Linux using Proton. Every time I ran the game it would want to install something for UE4 and it would fail. The good news is it didn’t seem to be needed as the game ran fine after you closed that. Trying to use DX12 resulted in a crash at launch but DX11 ran just fine. The game didn’t crash at all during gameplay. I noticed no glitches or bugs. There were five graphics settings as well as four setings for AA; Vsync; and an FOV slider. The FOV slider went from 60-120. There was a cap of 60 FPS regardless of Vsync being on or off. The game ran at a solid 60 FPS except for a few drops to the 40’s but they only lasted a second or two and weren’t frequent. This was with all settings at highest at 1080P and an FOV of 100. During gameplay my total system RAM usage was around 3-3.3GB; my CPU usage was around 11-18%; my GPU usage was around 40-55% and my VRAM usage was around 2.5-2.7GB. There was no manual saving option, just checkpoints after each room. You can choose to restart an entire chapter or just the room if you get stuck. The game uses the Unreal 4 engine.

As I stated before I really enjoyed the story of The Turing Test. It was the standout feature of the game and had a lot of depth that left you pondering over many moral scenarios and questions. The puzzles were overall pretty good with the odd annoying one. I finished the game in 7 hours. I didn’t finish the optional rooms so it could have taken longer. I paid $6.59 CAD for the game and would say it was easily worth $20.

    My Score: 8/10

Even if the The Turing Test sometimes wanders into the realm of clichés in terms of both gameplay and the story, the developers tackled the subject of artificial intelligence really well and created an engaging game. [11/2016, p.50]
