The Survivalist takes the core mechanics of the survival genre and twists them to create an interesting, exploration-based story.

The Survivalists is only another survival game, but a good one.

The Survivalists manages to deliver what it promises, although that isn't enough to stand out among other titles in the genre. The Escapists series offered an original concept in our attempts to escape from heavily guarded prisons, but this new adventure lacks in terms of originality. The Survivalists is a good game that doesn't take risks beyond its comfort zone.

It’s a lot of fun with friends, but it lacks something in single-player. I definitely recommend picking this up if you’re looking for something new to play in co-op or if you want to try out the survival genre in general. However, it lacks some of the satisfaction of other games in the genre. That being said, the monkey system is incredibly cool and the game is almost worth playing for that alone.

In an industry that has shifted from being “kid-friendly” to “adult-focused,” it’s imperative to remember that some games simply won’t work for the more aged gamers (30 is aged, right?). That’s not to say The Survivalists won’t resonate with adults — if this is your cup of banana smoothie, by all means — but it seems to be trying to speak with a younger audience. If you’re lamenting that school has started and you can’t devote as many hours to Minecraft with friends as you’d like, you’re probably going to love The Survivalists.

Interesting and charming in its own way, The Survivalists will keep you entertained in short bursts as you try to complete the main objective and craft items to stay alive. Unfortunately, the AI system of your monkey companions is quite cumbersome and clunky. You'll often find yourself more annoyed than delighted due to all the monkeying around.

Well, that’s a disappointment: After The Escapists 1+2, we were looking forward to the next game set in the same universe. The Survivalists, however, can’t hold a candle to its predecessors. The gameplay is broken in more ways than we can count, there are plenty of design flaws which makes you wonder how anybody couldn’t have seen how irritating they are and nevertheless, the game is way too short and way too easy. Such a pity.

As you've probably seen on Steam already, where it has today a rating of 50 %, most reviews are about a horrible UI, the tedious monkey control and management, and a lack of content. After 2-3 h you are done with the game. For a survival game, the game is not challenging at any time, except when the UI is not doing what you expect it to do. So, for an Early Access it would be a good base but for a full release? A disaster. I've checked the credits. It's a team of 30-40 people. How did such a big team miss so many points? What was the UI lead and the producer doing? This should not have happened. And it is confusing how many game magazines rated this game so high. It must have been journalists who do not care about survival games. Full Review »

I'm a bit of a sucker for 32-bit crafting games like this (loved Starbound) so that factors in, and no, it's not redefining the genre but it's straightforward and the monkey aspect is rather innovative and keeps the juggling act entertaining and engaging. Not sure why these hyper critical users are scoring it at 0 and 1, etc. when it's really not bad at all. I haven't run into any bugs and it's par for the course as far as these games go. I was going to rate it at 7 but I feel this overall rating needs help so I gave it an 8... Let us know how YOU like it. Full Review »
