Team17 have done it again with another endearingly designed, vastly comprehensive fun experience. The Survivalists is one of the best crafting games that I have played and one of my favourite games of the year.

The Survivalists is a fun survival sandbox which can be played both as an arcade adventure, hunting for every treasure and secret hidden around the island, and with a more casual approach by trying to just build some kind of boat and leave. Plenty of situations to face, a huge amount of structures, artifacts and recipes to unlock and experiment with. Each run will be an unique adventure. Monkey training is the icing on the cake. Pretty, fast and responsive, it will keep you in front of the screen for a long time.

The Survivalists proves to be a product of excellent quality, capable of combining depth and accessibility in a surprising way to create an experience that will certainly satisfy both purists of the genre (without ever boring them) and above all any newbies looking for an excuse to take your first steps in the world of survival.

The new title from infamous Team17 is an standard survival game that manages to entertain, even though it cannot add anything new to the genre.

Don’t let the title fool you. For something called The Survivalists, the game’s survival-related mechanics are shockingly lenient. The only aspect you need to pay constant attention to is hunger, but there’s plenty of food. Low overall difficulty level doesn’t have to be a flaw though. If Don’t Starve Together is too stressful for you and your friends, The Survivalists might be a great choice for co-op. [13/2020, p.66]

The Survivalists is a calm and serene survival game and monkey butler training broken up by spurts of risky combat and dungeon crawling with your trained monkey attack squad. If it wasn't for a few awkward design decisions it'd be fantastic, but it's still a good survival game that you can tackle with friends online.

While not difficult, The survivalists hooked me in with its take on the survival genre and the creative use of the local monkey population to help me survive.

    Starts poorly but ends greatly!

The problem with The Survivalists is that it’s so “free” early on that you either make many mistakes or make progress on useless stuff — making you feel absolutely stuck.

But if you manage to find out the solutions to these early problems*, you will have LOTS of fun in a sandbox full of challenges and exciting discoveries. You just need a bit of patience to get there!

*The biggest early-game problem I’ve found is about Metal Ingots, which everyone claims to be in the second island. The problem is that the second island, from your perspective, could be any island so you may end up in the wrong place!

Solution: if you end up in the wrong place, look for Frabbit — a fleeting shiny fox. He’ll drop metal and many other rare items you need to make progress early on!
