The only way you can have fun with this game is buying the expansion packs, stuff packs, and game packs, which is pricey. Speaking of pricey, I paid $80 for the base game last October and I've played it a grand total of maybe 15 times. Not worth the money. No Create-A-Style, toddlers, or open world...EA, what where you thinking? For now, I'm going to stick to The Sims 3. I will always support The Sims franchise, but The Sims 4 is definitely not for me.

The sims themselves are two-dimensional and lifeless, and only have 3 traits each, which mostly just give them random buffs instead of adding personality to the game.

Positives- The create-a-sim is heavily improved from The Sims 3, and uses clicking and dragging to sculpt sims bodies, rather than vague and confusing sliders. The loading screens have been drastically shortened, and are only a few seconds long. Build mode has also been improved, since you can now click and drag rooms and walls easily. The UI is streamlined and far nicer looking than in previous games.

Negatives- Many features from previous games in the series have been excluded from The Sims 4. This includes cars, open worlds, ponds, create-a-style, movable babies, editable worlds, 5 traits, and memories. The sims themselves are have far less personality than they did in TS3 and especially TS2. The "emotion" system that was heavily advertised for the game is broken and unbalanced. The worlds have been drastically shrunken down, and there are loading screens between literally every lot, even lots in the same neighborhood. The huge, beautiful worlds from previous games have been replaced with tiny neighborhoods with 2D backdrops. The worlds cannot be edited at all, and feel very lifeless and tiny. The game is plagued with "simulation lag" issues, meaning that sim interactions are delayed for up to hours on end, and time frequently skips, which can sometimes make the game nearly unplayable. Babies are now just objects, and can no longer be picked up or moved out of their crib. Teens are now identical to adults, both in height and appearance, aside from going to school and being unable to get married/have children. Due to the closed worlds, cars, which had been in every other sims game since TS2, have been excluded, and sims now teleport EVERYWHERE, which quickly breaks immersion. Many NPC characters from previous games have been removed, including burglars, police officers, firefighters, and the social worker. Starving children now disappear in a burst of sparkles since there are no social workers. The Cats and Dogs expansion pack, which, as it's name suggests, only includes cats and dogs, was very devoid of features when compared to previous Pets packs. Whereas The Sims 2: Pets and The Sims 3: Pets included many small pets along with cats and dogs, small pets are a completely separate pack in TS4- My First Pet Stuff, which may very well be the first ever DLC FOR A DLC! This goes to show how greedy EA has become, and how they only care about money at this point.

Only good thing about this game is the sim creation tool, everything else is just garbage, why?
The gameplay consists of "eat, shower, job, repeat"
The sims are constantly stressed and constantly need something, JUST SHUT UP!
Sims 1 is better than this in every aspect, its only outdated

I would love to leave a review about how wonderful or horrible the game is. However, I can not as I could never get the game to load. No matter what I did, installing/uninstalling Origin and the Sims 4, running registry cleaners, etc... I couldn't get the game to load past the "Unable to start: Initialization error at start up.

Every Sims release (until now) has been strides ahead of the previous version. DLCs aside, it was very easy to tell that Sims 3 was far ahead of Sims 2. The open world offered a level of exploration and customization that was absolutely unprecedented. Create a Style allowed you to make anything fit in exactly how you chose. There was no debate about whether the base game was an improvement over Sims 2.

Now, to Sims 4. Gone is the open world, rather we are stuck with a district consisting of a handful of houses. It is a small handful at that. Want to visit a neighbor's house in the same district? Loading screen. Want to visit some random place on the map? Nope. All the while, other sims are free to roam past your lot, which seems to have more foot traffic than a park in London. Toddlers and pools are gone, which I was actually okay with, it's the other features, included in the base game of Sims 3, that put me a bit off. Create a Style is gone, revert back to the Sims 2 style of presets. Ponds and water are gone. Want to go fishing in the comfort of your backyard? Nope, you've been reduced to fishing and signposts. Along with ponds, changes in elevation are gone. The elevation tools allowed you to create massive castles, towering over the town, surveying all those beneath you. Basements are also nowhere to be found. Entire houses could be create under the earth in a seemingly empty lot. It seems the days of real creativity in designing your home are lost.

Now to the performance. It is pretty clear that Sims 4 does run smoother than Sims 3, but is the cost really worth it? Below are a few factors that most certainly contribute to it running better:
    - No open world
    - Smaller lots
    - No Create a Style
    - No elevations
Do the loss of these basic features for the gain of a bit of performance really make it a better game?

Now for why I gave it a 0 instead of 3 or something... Too many reviews on this site (from those rating the game favorable to a point that is worthy of ridicule) make accusations against those who've rated it poorly. Rating it against Sims 3 w/ DLCs, don't like change, never actually purchased it, these are all things I've read in positive reviews. As a fan of The Sims since the original release, I am disappointed with this most recent installment.

So I wanted to get a refund :) After 2 days.. no refund.

I want to point out a key point 'whichever comes first' in the policy. Which means if you want your TS4 to be refunded you shouldn't have launched it at all in your pc otherwise you can only within 24 hrs.

Or so I was told. Because as a not 1st language English speaker missed that "whichever comes first" point or not quite understood its meaning.

So I am forced to remove my good review. It is a good beta/base game for more expansions to come and make it a game . It's a beta and I would avoid it for now or maybe avoid EA forever.

Disappointed, I should add, in much the same way I was disappointed with SimCity and what's happened to that franchise. At this point I truly abhor EA, as it feels like the decisions made regarding these classic games have been made by the same committee who decided to improve upon the wheel by making it square.

There are good aspects to this game, it's not a 0 or 1 rating game, as so many people are trigger-fingering here. The user interface has undergone a much-needed facelift and after a short and awkward learning-curve, you find it's far more intuitive and well-placed, opening up the majority of the screen to watch the game rather than be cluttered with information. The way specific skills level up seems more natural, and the addition of new skills like 'comedy' when talking or traits like 'introspective' when not being social for a while is cool. The graphics, lighting, effects, music, all still good, but compared to the difference between Sims and Sims 2 or Sims 2 and Sims 3, this is easily the smallest leap and I've noticed some people are annoyed at the slightly more cartoonish approach. I am not bothered by it.

I'd love to say there's a lot more to love about this game, but there's not. Sims 2 introduced a whole host of improvements, notably an 'open world' type system. Sims 3 introduced a ridiculously innovative style system of textures and colors, among many other improvements. Sims 4 strips all of these things away and claims its big introduction (something so good it had to replace those other things) - moods and multitasking. If added to the already awesome additions of the previous games, fine. Great, even. I like multitasking - watching tv while eating and talking is nifty. But for as unexciting as that is, the moods system is even less exciting. Yes, now moods affect things, particularly how you engage in conversation (always has, though, really), but now you get corresponding facial expressions, body language, and animations. Again, add these innovations on top of the previous innovations, and fine.

But removing previous advances, especially the style-swapping features of Sims 3, has caused this game to feel like a big step backwards. I mean big. Feverishly looking for the eyedropper tool as I style a room, only to be reminded yet again that the function was totally removed, is the hugest bummer. Yeah they took out swimming pools and toddlers and ... whatever ... I want the ability to style everything the way I like it. With that one single feature gone, the game has lost an entire level of engagement for me. Add to that the missing open world design of previous games, and then, yes, a freaking universe of items - and this thing feels like just a totally incomplete shadow of former Sims games. A real letdown.

I am playing it and supporting the series for one reason and one reason alone - out of the hands of EA, I think this game could be revived (I feel the same way about SimCity). I honestly have no idea if EA is even directly responsible for these ridiculous design decisions or not, but I know that everything EA has touched in the last five years or so has turned to complete you-know-what.

The game isn't worth buying for sixty dollars right now. Period. It's a practically empty shell of a game where your only real aspirations are to become friends with people in your direct vicinity and maybe eat and do dishes, watch tv, go to sleep, rinse repeat. There's practically nothing here anymore, feels like very little to do. The interest in seeing how moods affect things wore off after about 15 minutes of playing and I longed for the ability to at least lose myself in styling things to my content. I'll go back to the Sims 3 where I've got Sims in college, on vacation, and everything looks badass because I made it that way. I can do without the moods. I'll be in a better one myself with all the stuff missing from Sims 4.

Different skills and activities are also very poorly balanced - among the creative skills writing is basically a money printing license while music is basically useless even though they take similar amounts of time and effort. This really limits what your sim can do if you're aiming to be as successful as you can. Of course, there's also the trait system which can turn your sim into a perfect inhuman cyborg with no needs beyond fun and bladder in relatively short order.

The biggest problem with this game is that there is no reason to buy it instead of The Sims 3 with it's expansions. It's stripped down and a dreadful step in game making. I long for the day where some indie or other developer creates something based on The Sims that will surpass this to the moon and back.

As an avid Sims fan with my own dedicated website, I was very eager to receive a copy of the Sims 4. I'm mainly a builder and was looking forward to being able to create stunning homes using what I hoped would be, some brand, new tools to work with. How disappointed I was!

Firstly, the foundations - If you want a foundation on your house, it applies to the entire lot, whether the parts are joined to the house or not. I sometimes like to build a fake garage or a little garden shed, but now I can't as they all end up with the same foundation as the house! Also, you can't make the foundation match the walls any more, you just have to pick from the feeble choices of foundation patterns they provide. It's also very difficult to join fences to the foundations - you have to build walls where you want the fences to be and then apply a fence to the walls.

Secondly, you can't delete floor tiles, just entire floors. I like to make my landing areas inside the house interesting and for that I need to be able to take away parts of the floor. Not any more I can't! They say there are ways around this, but they all make weird things happen when you try them. Sometimes the roof comes down into the house etc. There is a sledgehammer tool, so you can build a mini room where you want to delete the floor, then you use the sledgehammer to smash the floor and delete the tiles, but as soon as you delete the walls, the floor comes back! I have searched for hours for a solution/workaround for this, but just come across many people having the same issue with no way around it. However, you can make the foundations different heights, which is a definite improvement.

Thirdly, there is NO pattern tool! You receive a paltry amount of content that you can't do anything with, so everyone's houses all end up looking the same. One of the things I loved about the Sims 3 was how highly configurable everything was, even the Sims themselves. This, IMHO, is a definite step back for the game.

There are 2 carpets, both the same colour, with little pattern difference. Unless you want to download tons and tons of custom content, your Sims houses are going to be very boring affairs. I can't even select different bedding for your beds, you just have to be happy with the bed sets they provide.

I'm not sure if this is something I haven't figured out yet, but if I want 3 or more sets of stairs next to each other and I want to have railings at the side, I can't - the railings appear between each set and I can't just add them to each end.

Annoyingly, the moveobjects on cheat doesn't work in this game. That means I can't move objects where I want any more. :(

There are one or two improvements that I like - one is that you can move your entire house if you need to, and now your roofs can all have different patterns.

There were several more things that I wasn't happy with, but these are the main bugbears. For game sequels, you need to add features, not take them away! I'm just happy they listened to people and brought back the pools after doing away with these, too, initially!

Sims 4 is a major disappointment. It is hard to put your finger on a single failure, but as a whole it just isn't a very good game. It feels very shallow.

The world is tiny, so tiny that you have to load to go visit the next door neighbor. While this does help the loading of the game, a lot (in Sims 3 it could be quite lengthy) it detracts from the feel of an immersive and interactive

Careers seem dumbed down compared to the last version. Non player characters, instead of interacting, it seems like they are just sort of parading by.

I'm sure they will be adding many of these missing features as paid DLC, but that itself is offensive. The base game should at least be enjoyable. In it's current state, it is not.

The first thing I notice was that the loading screen was quicker than The Sims 3 and I figured that that was some improvement. The next improvement was the interface. It looked beautifully sharp and was no doubt an upgrade to its counterparts but that's when I realize that the Sims 4 is just another SimCity (New One). With all of its improvement it seems to me that they dispose so many great aspect that made its counterpart so popular. The Sims 4 is a dumb down version of The Sims 3 believe it or not. Yes, the way your Sims act (emotion wise) is more 'real' than The Sims 3 unit but that's barely an improvement that could had easily been implemented on The Sims 3. Also, don't expect global view. Why? Because it's not there anymore. Another thing to not expect is color customization. Yes, you read it, no more creativity on how different you can make your avatar look. There are only a few things that The Sims 4 has really improve on. One as I mention before, is emotions and the way your avatar interacts with other Sims. Two, the way you build homes and how easily you can turn a box into a glorified piece of art. Last but not least, interfaces and loading time. And just to point out why it loads so fast is because there's no more global view and what I mean by that is, rather than seeing your Sim drive to the local gym or the local dance club, you get a beautiful loading screen instead. Oh yeah, did I also mention that you are limited to where you can live? Maybe this is just for now but it doesn't excuse the fact that you're limited to how your Sims can live. Overall, this version of The Sim is just a big disappointment. Wait until it goes on sale, gets improved updates, or have some type of bundle with extra DLC's because for a full $60 or $70 for the deluxe edition, it isn't worth it. The Sims 4 is meant to be played with medium-end performance, meaning most modern computers should be capable of running it without having to get high-end graphic card or CPU in comparison to The Sims 3 (If you want to run it without much difficulty). And if you do happen to like this version of The Sims, more power to you but this isn't my cup of tea. Expand

There sure are some advantages over The Sims 3 and The Sims 2, like quite powerful CAS and Build Mode, but these were made just to excite a new player for near 5 days until the game will have been started to glitch a lot, and they'll begin to look forward to the older games, which are A LOT more superior. For veterans of the series, mainly nothing of The Sims 4 would be as addictive as the previous games. Expand

Not a bad game itself, probably would have given it a 6 or such, but the amount of dlc’s should tell you how much is missing from this game. I got this game for free, and I still feel bamboozled. Unless you **** money, it’s not finished or original, it’s a rehash from the others, but putting interesting stuff as an 20 part expansion

The only problem I have with this game is the pay gap with male bodies vs female bodies.

I have both male and female working in the space unit--they are currently at the module cleaner level. M is getting paid 37/hr while FM is getting paid at 33/hr. Seriously???? How hard is it to get equal pay FOR THE SAME JOB? I'm going to bet it happens with other careers(I'm not sure though).

I’ve loved this game since sims 3. I might not be a veteran, and a bit late to the party, but I loved the idea of creating the perfect me for different lifestyles. But, it’s changed. And here’s why. Sims 4 is boring. It’s the most painful and boring game. I guess you could argue that’s just how a life simulator is. But I remember having so much fun going to clubs and restaurants and bars in sims 3, at my own will. Call me a hater, but the fact we didn’t get open world in the “newer” sims is laughable. And yeah, this complaint has been beaten into the sims 4 developers minds but they certainly have a fun time defending their precious ugly a** baby from criticism. I found it so funny that when I was first watching video for the Sims 4, they praised the character creator for its amazing abilities. Instead we got some cool sliders on the bodies and nothing else. What happened to the customization? Sims 3 let’s me pick accurate and unashey POC skin colors, and now I get absolutely disgraceful skin tones that people have complained about since they appeared. But it’s been a good few years, and alas no improvement! Because the Sims team and EA doesn’t care about its fans. It’s so heartwarming to look at these amazing surveys and actually get excited before remembering, oh right, it’s EA, it won’t happen. I looked at the website and saw school, accurate relationships, improved babies, and I got tears. I was finally going to get the sims 4 we all deserved. Instead they come out with the WORST pack I’ve seen. A eco pack. For 35 DOLLARS. If you are spending 35 of your hard earned money for rehashed ideas from two other packs fluffed with stinky old cheese.... I’m sorry but please save it for something else. I’ve never been more embarrassed for a company. The fact it passed so many people and they looked at it and thought “This won’t look like an obvious cash grab at all!” Because that’s all they think. They don’t care about us. Why would they when people still throw money at the company like h*rny straight me. I also find it soooo hysterical that there are literal fans, working for no money or limited money from patreon, are making BETTER packs and expansions for FREE or for cheap, better than the f*cking devs. I could not be more proud of a community for actively owning the sh*t out of this team that constantly uses “non realistic/ impossible” as a reasonable excuse. The fans give us matching furniture, realistic teens/babies with skin problems and moody days, actually good and relevant clothing other than the disgusting style Maxis gives us, beautiful skins colors and amazing hair. It’s so sad these people work so hard to make the game actually enjoyable content that is being eaten up by EA. I can’t get over the blandness and ugly and boring Sims 4. We’ve gotten unfinished packs, unmatched devs, awful buildings, horrendous packs, all for what. We have suffered so long and I just. This is the last **** straw. I can’t kept waisting my money on a game I know won’t improve. It’s heartbreaking to me that I put so much hope only for EA to piss and sh*t all over my dreams. I genuinely hope that people on the Sims team learn to read feedback. It would be beautiful to see actually good builds, good packs, and content that makes even 15 bucks f*cking worth it. Expand

While an enjoyable title that has been polished up and seems generally very modern, it cannot be expected that The Sims 4 is not going to be compared to The Sims 3. In this respect, it seems that while the game took a few steps forwards, it also took a few steps backwards by abandoning features that were very helpful and appreciated in the previous versions. It does have new features that people have been waiting for, such as emotions and more personality for the Sims. As for now, for some players it may not quite be worth to abandon The Sims 3 for it, but for new players looking for a first experience with the franchise, they may have an easier time navigating than former The Sims 3 players. People that have previously enjoyed the latter may be disappointed by the menus (Sim creation, building, or navigating town), as they have been so massively oversimplified that they are now actually confusing.

How would you react if you bought a new Elder Scrolls game and realized that half of the cities are unavailable (because TES6: World Adventures is around the corner), there are only 4 weapons (TES6: Accessories), you can’t ride horses (TES6: Pets), there are only 12 quests (TES6: Careers), 2 guilds (TES6: Friends) and 3 spells (TES6: Supernatural)?
