An interesting but flawed DLC that can provide some new fun adventures in Obsidian's sci-fi RPG.

The Outer Worlds - Murder on Eridanos is a sizable DLC offering that exhibits some fun murder-mystery hijinks with the same Outer Worlds flair you've come accustomed to in the rest of the game. With some niggling quest issues and an unsatisfying conclusion, I'm not sure if it is excellent enough to convince players to spend $15 and dust off a game they've already completed more than a year ago, but there's still fun to be had for those looking for more.

A few more hours of gameplay for hardcore fans of the original title.

The final expansion to Obsidian’s original sci-fi RPG is a low-key but intriguing finale. The Outer Worlds: Murder on Eridanos puts us into a traditionally structured murder mystery with a few good turns to investigate across one of its weirdest planets yet. It doesn’t revive the stale combat but it does give us a good reason to come back to the crew of the Unreliable to solve one last case.

Murder on Eridanos provides an intriguing story to follow thanks to its murder investigation premise, even though the DLC otherwise maintains all of the pros and cons of The Outer Worlds and its previous DLC, Peril on Gorgon.

The DLC’s undeniable advantage is its impressive length – I needed eight hours to finish it. The problem is that the story, though well-written, doesn’t actually need you. It is absolutely linear and doesn’t even pretend not to be, so no matter what you do, you’ll get roughly the same ending (the final decision seems crucial but its impact is small). Other than that Murder on Eridanos is more of the same, but you’ll be shooting less than you did in the base game. [05/2021, p.45]

Fans, for their part, will find all the ingredients that made up the recipe for the base game and will be able to immerse themselves in this fanciful universe for 5 to 7 hours.

While Murder on Eridanos has fun moments focusing on investigating and dialogue choices, it is actively undermined by shoving combat in your face and a twist that makes events leading up to that point feel pointless.

As the final piece of The Outer World‘s DLC, Murder on Eridanos simply didn’t live up to my expectations for the series. If anything, it feels like a semi-memorable side quest inflated into a full-scale DLC. Maybe Obsidian ran out of things to say about the universe of The Outer Worlds! While the DLC’s inconsistent tone and lack of meaningful choices left me cold, there were a few interesting characters that did pull me in for a few hours. If you enjoyed the core game of The Outer Worlds, then Murder on Eridanos may give you another reason to visit the Halcyon system. Otherwise, it’s as dead as Halcyon Helen on the ballroom floor of the Grand Colonial.

Better than Peril on Gorgon and has more story, but it doesn't feel like your investigation matters. Nice premise, poor execution. These DLCsBetter than Peril on Gorgon and has more story, but it doesn't feel like your investigation matters. Nice premise, poor execution. These DLCs are also coming out very, very late from the core game, so it's hard to get back into the swing of TOW (as well as having to backtrack to play the DLC). Full Review »
