    The Magnificent Truffle Pigs labels itself as a first-person, romantic, metal-detecting game, but it’s far, far more than that. It’s a reminder that every person’s path through life is wholly different, and that sometimes the best plan is to have no plan at all. It’s a meditative, peaceful experience that I’m sure will resonate with many others as much as it did with me. If you’re a fan of Firewatch and other narrative-driven titles, The Magnificent Truffle Pigs is absolutely worth your time and money.

    The Magnificent Trufflepigs asks players to stop frantically trying to achieve arbitrary goals and instead reflect on why we’ve undertaken them in the first place. It employs an interesting and underutilized mechanic, only to completely change it up once the main character achieves some desperately needed personal growth. It may require a second playthrough to totally understand not only the big reveal but overarching message; luckily, it’s a three hour excursion (at most) across bucolic English countryside, so that extra time is time well spent. If you find yourself exhausted by constantly trying to check things off life’s list, you deserve a breather — grab a metal detector and take a walk with The Magnificent Trufflepigs.

    The Magnificent Trufflepigs is a very condensed story, only taking about a few hours to reach the credits. Because of this, the narrative feels concise and free of filler. Despite spending such little time with them, I felt like I had a good understanding of these characters and the relationship forming between them, thanks to two exceptional voice performances. The game’s metal-detecting segments also make for some relaxing times as well. Although some design choices make certain moments more tedious than they need to be, The Magnificent Trufflepigs is a pleasant little experience.

    The Magnificent Trufflepigs may leave you a little dissatisfied mechanically, but delve deep into the layer of it’s story and you may find something more valuable than a mere trinket will ever be.

    After its two hour run-time ended with a little bubble burst of hope and sadness, I rather wished I could have sent Beth on her way and stayed behind with Adam - if only 'cos I didn't finish detecting half of those fields. There's gold in them there lovely hills. I can feel it.

    This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. Having finished the game, I found myself relating to the protagonist in a profound way that I have never experienced.

    The protagonist is a guy named Adam who wants nothing more than to rekindle a romance with endlessly self-centered Beth who literally talks about herself the entire game while he (at her behest) digs up junk in a field. He is ostensibly trying to find an expensive earring that Beth insists is there, but she later admits it’s not.

    Then at the end, she friendzones him really harshly, saying that he (the one friend that agreed to meet her, when her other friends blow her off at the beginning) is “part of the problem”, when he asks if he could accompany her, she says “that’s not how this works.” (Apparently “how it works” is that she gets what she needs and he can go f*ck himself for all she cares.)

    And then she glibly makes plans with her other friends moments after kicking him to the curb. Are we supposed to be happy for her? I felt the same way. I thought, “Yes, I will literally dig up trash on a farm. And yes, I will serve as an inert sounding board for this terribly dull person, where my dialogue options clearly have no impact to this ceaseless prattle. But I’m the end it will be worth it! Something good will happen, for sure!” But it never did, and I left feeling just as downtrodden as Adam, and just as much of a sucker. To whomever made this game: Screw you.    … Full Review »

    Here you play as Adam, helping beth look for a second earing to a pair she found detecting years ago.. here youll be slowly walking until your metal detector beeps, dig up whatever it is, take a pcture, send it and youll get a little chunk of the story… this whole game is just finding stuff to learn more about beth and her family.. its just a shame she isn’t really interesting.. I found nothing about this game to be interesting.. im thrown into a fenced in area to find items, walk at a snails pace so I would lift my metal detector to run, throw it down see if anything pops up rinse repeat until lunch time while I get to hear this girl cry about her fiance and friend zone me for 2 hours… and there just isn’t anything to uncover..
    at th end of that day youll be thrown into a new fenced in area that barely feels different from the last.. and there is just no excitement when you find something new.. no mystery to solve.. youre just finding junk and reflecting on your friendship and listening to her boy problems.
    his is more of a friendzone simulator, and I was bored of it from start to finish…
