The Hong Kong Massacre is like an unpolished gem; it's pretty and glamorous at first glance, but eventually you will notice the dirt sticking around its rough edges.

A fast paced top down shooter, developed by a team of two and inspired by Hotline Miami. The game starts off strong, you are vaulting over tables, knocking down doors and shooting in bullet time with great particle effects, but after a few missions boredom sets in. With only four firearms and no melee weapons, missions feel very repetitive. In the end i found myself using the fully upgraded assault rifle, jumping into a room, and activating slow-mo to clear it without a sweat. The game almost became too easy. Boss fights were a huge disappointment, following the same formula that could be outmaneuvered thanks to the rather dumb AI.

Overall i think they could have done better but it was enjoyable for a few hours.

It’s a very intensive and addictive experience – although it doesn’t get in your head as well as Hotline Miami, nor has it comparably good soundtrack. It’s a game put together from other people’s ideas which simply go well together. [03/2019, p.80]

The Hong Kong Massacre teeters between magnificent to mediocre quite often. Its gunplay mechanics are good, but the dodgy AI will ruin the experience due to your very high fragility and their impeccable aim. The levels look awesome at first, especially when the action gets kicked up, but the environments blend into one another after a while. The trial-and-error nature can get tedious, but if you don't mind that, then you'll find lots of high-tension action here. The Hong Kong Massacre isn't a must-have, but it isn't a bad title to play, either.

You may enjoy the game if you like John Woo's action movies.
