Skyrim is far from perfect, at the point of writing. It has several bugs and glitches, but the key thing is, I don't care. This is still the best game I have ever played and the detail and depth of the world amazes me. This is the best way I have ever used £30 in my life.

Skyrim is simply awesome and here is why.. I have to say that when I first saw the screenshots for this game I thought to myself "It doesn't look that flash, just another Morrowind". I then watched a video review of it over at gamespot. After seeing the video I simply had to have it!! The graphics are not pixel perfect but the world does look amazing. After seeing the video I simply had to have it!! The graphics are not pixel perfect but the world does look amazing. The UI is catered for console but who cares, there is already a mod out there that makes it more PC friendly but I don't have any trouble with it myself. I've been playing it for over 20 hours and am loving every minute. Two things stand out in this game for me, the first being the Dragons. Best I have seen in any game. They are loud, fierce and are stunning to look at. Not only this but you will come across more than one! The second thing is the abillity to do anything you want in the game. I purchased a horse for 1000g only to lose it in a fight with a Giant. No matter though I found another horse standing next to the road so I just stole it :) I couldn't believe how easy it was to take. Only problem is that whenever you dismount the horse it keeps wanting to return to the spot you took it. You don't have to be a thief to be able to lock pick. There is so much to find and do in this game it will keep you entertained for hours :) The game has yet to crash on me. Of course there are some glitches in the game but they are not game breakers. The shadow glitch which happens in daylight (shadows flicker every 30sec or so) I managed to fix with changing the ini file. I found a fix for this searching in google. I thought my video card was on the blink, phew! Overall I was expecting a lot less from this game and was surprisingly impressed with it. Now I am having trouble keeping away from it :) If you love Dragons you simply must have this game. If you are on the fence check out the video review and also youtube for first impressions of the game. I'm sold on it! Simply amazing!! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game absorbed me for 2-3 weeks, then my interest fell off a cliff. I've been away for a month and half or so now and thought I should try it again but instead I'm writing this review. I've been trying to think what went wrong for me with Skyrim and still have trouble putting it in to a coherent explanation. I know my interest collapsed within a day or so of my encounter with the thieves guild. I arrived in that town and was told by about everyone how bad the thieves guild was. So being the do-gooder, sociopath that I am, I set out to find and destroy the guild. Things went well at first. I found the sewers and fought my way through several maps to arrive at the guild's underground bar/base. I backed up, summoned my elemental, positioned my tank companion, and then started raining in glorious aoe nukes. At this point what I had been deluding myself was an open-world sandbox rpg revealed itself to be just another tracked, console port--the thieves guild leadership (the terrible folks terrorizing the whole town) are immortal, unkillable npcs. The next day I came upon an imperial general standing in a field. Being a rebel at war with the imperials, I tried to kill him. Again, no dice--plot essential immortal.

Obviously, not being able to kill a few folks can't be the full explanation for my loss of interest, but I think it is symptomatic of a game that while beautiful and immense, upon closer inspection fails to deliver on the depth that it promises. Oh, and the melee combat is unresponsive and bleh.

Beautiful and fun, but oh so ronery. You see, I really like sandbox, open-world games, and I like Norse mythology, a bit of violence, some magic, some cool stuff, and Skyrim delivers on all of that, not to mention graphics that even look pretty on my 256MB GPU (except for horrible shadows on the characters, but that can be tweaked). The trouble is, it's more of an action/exploration gameBeautiful and fun, but oh so ronery. The trouble is, it's more of an action/exploration game than an RPG. Your character can be male or female, any race, and look how you like (provided you like the weather-beaten, gaunt look. Mods mods mods), but beyond that you're not really a character. You have no personality, and neither really does anyone else. I didn't feel attached to *any* of the characters in the game, including my own. Dialogue options were limited and uninspired, and followers seemed to have one set of options to ask them about, which were mostly about the mechanics of having a follower or what their job was.

The secondary plotline, whilst undeniably gritty and shade-of-grey did not give you any really morally satisfying options: side with the racist, nationalist stormcloaks, or the corrupt, domineering farce of an Empire whose soldiers decided to cut off your head for no better reason than just liking to do that kind of thing.

Quests felt hollow, for the most part. Go fetch thing from some caves and kill a loads of people/things on the way, and overload your packs with junk. I liked the nordic/ germanic voice acting, but it was still a bit bland and they were clearly speaking American, even if they were doing it in their own accents "Gotta lay low for a while, still got a ways to go" etc. They also picked some really distinctive voices and used them on a load of characters, without trying to vary their lines, delivery or intonation at all. So the shopkeeper in Riverwood is the shopkeeper in Whiterun is the King of the Forsworn etc.

Now, none of this would be a problem if it was multiplayer, because you could RP with real people and/or just go on dungeon raids and have fun times, but it's not. So, if you like epic storylines and atmosphere, great scripts and genuinely likable characters, go get Dragon Age (1, not 2). And if you want a fun blast with fast-paced violent action, get left 4 dead 2. Skyrim makes a great initial impression, but after a while you just feel like you're still sitting in the bath long after the water's gone cold.

Skyrim, I tried to like it so many times, I probably installed it and deinstalled it over 10 times because the game gets boring really quickly. All the game can offer is Skyrim itself, the world is beautiful and with some mods you can make it look almost real. If you played the other Elder Scrolls you know that this game isn't a big improvement, maybe in some parts it got even worse thanSkyrim, I tried to like it so many times, I probably installed it and deinstalled it over 10 times because the game gets boring really quickly. All the game can offer is Skyrim itself, the world is beautiful and with some mods you can make it look almost real. If you played the other Elder Scrolls you know that this game isn't a big improvement, maybe in some parts it got even worse than it was. Combat disappointed me the most, it's dull without any variety. If you're melee you're gonna spam attack over and over again, you just spam the mouse click until the enemy is dead. You don't feel any real impact of the weapons, you can't cut off limbs and cripple enemies (why is it possible in Fallout but not in Skyrim ?). The weapons don't feel like they're heavy, you just lose more stamina if you miss a hit and that's it. With Magic it's the same and more boring than as a melee. Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is a perfect example how combat should be done and feel. Enemies are also quiet repetitive, I'm tired of killing draugrs and falmers over and over again, there is not a wide array of enemies in Skyrim, the dragons are rather annoying than challenging, as a melee you're gonna hate them because all you will do is wait until they finally land so you can attack them, most of the time you're gonna be dead before you can even attack (if you play on master). Another thing that disappointed me was there was no feeling that a war is going on, but all people will tell you about the war between imperials and the stormcloacks. In Oblivion you actually got the feeling that daedra are invading the world and there's a war going on. I think with one more year of development, there could have been much more done and really bringing all the potential out of the game. The Dawnguard DLC story is probably the only thing that I really enjoyed so far. If you want action and a good story don't buy it, Skyrim is a big fantasy world simulator based on nordic lore. Expand

Normally PC games aren't as good as console ones but the elder scroll series is an exception! The base game is near perfect as it is...but with mods available only to pc users any small issues can be smoothed over for a perfectly tailored game for each individual.

Well, this is not a game, this is a BUGAME, man its so bug ridden i think Bethesda should make an Elder Scrolls V Unbugged Version, because there is a Flying Giant bug, a Flying Backwards Mammoth bug and even a bug where you can't even finish the storyline quests, and a little multiplayer would be nice, you know.

Playing this game is a challenge, and not in the good sort of way. The challenge comes from trying to deal with all the bugs. Not small annoying bugs, but at times showstoppers that require you to use the console to continue game play.

Many negative reviews are from people who want something more, but they fail to realize this is a project that is way more than any other game out there. Yes, there are flaws, but they pale in comparison to its virtues. Pros: Amazing world, ALL dungeons are different, I'm not getting bored exploring them like in oblivion. Graphics are pretty good, although we still have people whining about that...it's Bethesda for gods sake! And overall hours and hours of possible gameplay. Quests are relatively interesting, with a good variety as far as i'm concerned. Overall, loving it.

Cons: Menu system does suck, but mods are out (and coming out) already to improve it. Have gotten one crash...but compared to oblivion this is Mac versus Windows...

The menus are very bad, mods do help but they still are often unresponsive and annoying.
The graphics are awesome, and so are many of the mods you can download with it. It's probably one of the most modded games in history. However even with mods it's still pretty unsatisfying, NPCs still say immersion breaking things, completnig major quest lines have very little impact on the world and the "people" there are pretty bland with very little to say or do. It certainly doesn't feel very immersive.

Once we have better AI and are able to properly communicate with the NPCs of their world, I think we'll start getting incredible "Open World Sandbox" games. But for now, we're stuck with games like this, which excel in certain areas but are ultimately not that immersive and offer very limited interaction with the NPCs.

Another thing that annoyed me is how unattractive the factions are. I didn't feel an urge to help either the Stormcloaks or the Imperials, both were pretty unappealing factions to me. Even the Blades and the Greybeards were flawed.

But I'm still giving this a 7 because it excels at certain things like graphics, amount of things to do (huge amount of content) and the lore tends to be good. If you enjoy open world type of games in a fantasy world, you'll almost certainly like this one.

Fantastic gameplay/story. A lot of fun to play. I never feel like it is a grind, or I have to do/play a certain way. The only gripe I have, is the PC version UI, sucks. This only happens very rarely (twice so far), doesn't affect gameplay, and has been fixed every time I've encountered it by simply re-loading the game (which I should probably be doing more than once every 4 hours anyways lol). Lets startAs a true elder scroll fan, I can promise to any reader reading this review will not see a biased/unrelated/ranting review here. I was long looking forward to skyrim, after experiencing Oblivion I honestly thought Bethesda could not surpass this. After playing many hours of Skyrim I feel I can speak true to other fans, or any other gamer who seek an excellent FPRPG experience. Lets start out visually; Skyrim I must say is stunning (if you have the power for it), even on a medium setting. What really strikes out is the atmosphere. You will see snow dust blowing, trees waving, beautiful water detail falling from cliffs and all sorts of wildlife running from and after you.. Skyrim honestly made me feel as if I was actually in the wild. The characters were mediocre, slightly better then those from oblivion with some flaws on texturing when they speak. Character creation, although very similar to oblivion, is very detailed as well, customizing everything from your nose, to the amount of dirt thats exposed on your skin. Now to gameplay; Skyrim has many different aspects to its gameplay that many gamers such as myself can pick out for a thorough review. First combat. I can definitely say that bethesda perfected combat in skyrim. No longer is it running around hacking and slashing. There are more fluid techniques one can use and it actually feels that you need to study your opponents moves. From using your shield to push them back to parrying them. Spells are excellent in which you now hold down to attack and dual wield. All in all the combat in skyrim is flawless. A huge draw back in this game is the character leveling. There are many perks one could use in this game but I feel there is alot left out. No matter if its a sword or mace, the mechanics only care if its one handed or two handed. Character strength and athletics no longer matter and any race can be a good spell caster if you devote your points to it. It feels that you can be anyone and excell in anything, which is fine, but it takes the fun out of being a character specific class. One thing I felt fell short was the GUI. The interface can be quite aggravating compared to oblivion which was much more organized. Some highlighted conversation selections will not work, the map controls are bit tedious to work with, and the inventory screen is quite bland. On to the story/quest/replay values. So far (I will not spoil anything) the story line is excellent. All the characters have a different personality, the voice acting is excellent, there are literally hundreds of quests and you will never become bored. AI town civilization is also greatly improved. Characters have better dialogue with each other and it feels like an actual simulation. To sum it all up, If you are an elder scrolls fan, Skyrim should not be an option just get it you will be satisfied. If you enjoy in depth RPG's that take on a more action style gameplay, Skyrim will satisfy you. If high replay value is what you are looking for, look no more. Skyrim, I can easily say, definitely meets expectations to a brand new Elder Scrolls title Expand

Out with the glitches and clunky character models that were Bethesda's unofficial trademarks. And honestly, no company makes open world RPG fantasy games like Bethesda. Fans of the earlier games don't need convincing, the games are huge time sinks. But on the other hand...

Its almost a disservice to call the game streamlined, but just almost. First leveling. The leveling system from Oblivion has been cut in half; no more Strength, Endurance, Agility, and Willpower character stats. Only skills stats like Blocking, Destruction, and Sneak got to stay in. This has its plus and minuses. On the up side leveling is less of a hassle of trying to increase minor skills to up stats and all that hooplah. On the negative side, it strips away a huge part of character diversity, especially during early/mid game. To me the bigger offense is that all the races have essentially the same skills. No more jack of all trades Dark Elf, spell casting Breton, and warrior Orc. Of course, any race could be built anyway you wanted, but now race has been boiled down to an aesthetics choice. To gamers new to the series this is fine. To an Elder Scrolls veteran it means that this + no more stats simplifies the leveling system. Big time.

Of course simplified doesn't mean simple. The game is complex enough to entertain me and mods alleviate most of the problems. Mods also solve my biggest irk, which is how ridiculously easy the game is (even the hyped up dragons), but I shouldn't have had to use a mod. Well, this comment makes the game seem like a let down but its not. I'm giving it an 8 because it has highlights that overshadow its negatives. And honestly, I feel like a new gamers coming in to the series would see most of these negatives as a relief from how inaccessible previous titles were.

After completing the starting sequence where you create your character and are familiarised with some core mechanics of the game, the world is open for adventure and exploration. And this is just the beginning, with the Creation Kit coming out soon the amount of user made content and mods will explode making Skyrim a game with unending potential for improvement. Expand

Even more than a year later I'm still enjoying Skyrim tremendously. However; without the mind blowing mod support, I would have stopped playing a very long time ago.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am truly astonished by the number of negative user review for this game. Worse yet, the majority of these negative reviews are written by people who claim to have played no more than 5 hours of a game that has been designed to last around 300 hours if if the player opts to complete every quest and dungeon in the game. That's a lot of content these reviewers are missing out on. I have also seen many complaints regarding the PC controls for the game. I actually can't speak of how the keyboard and mouse feel as I have been using my wired xbox controller the entire time I have been playing, and I have to say that the game handles very well with the controller and does seem to be tailored for the use of controllers (much like the Witcher 2). Still, it seems foolish to rate a masterpiece like Skyrim so low for something so trivial, as others still have done for the "terrible" graphics in the game. The game is gorgeous. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either lying or wasn't playing the game on its highest settings. Certainly the game isn't quite as glorious to behold as say Battlefield 3, but it is far beyond the deary, ugly landscapes and denizens of Fallout 3's Wasteland. Plus, the game world is massive. While the surface world of the game is comparable to Oblivion, there are numerous dungeons: each with their own unique look and personal history for the player to discover. While the hundreds of locations to find and explore suits me and my play style, no doubt others will be more interested in the main story and Guild quests. Simply put, they are amazingly fun. There are no more tedious tasks like getting recommendations from every Mage's Guild, instead you are dropped right into the Guild's quests; all of which have interesting stories and valuable rewards (such as the ability to transform into a werewolf). I still haven't touched on the much improved combat yet, so I'll dive into that now. The ability to dual wield everything from axes to spells has tremendously improved the game play. Using nothing but magic is a truly viable option, whereas in Oblivion you often had to rely on melee weapons for close combat, now you can have a magical shield up while simultaneously shooting fireballs. Companions are also a much greater help in the combat arena than they were in the past, owing to the ability to give them enhanced weapons and armor as well as the option to tell them to attack particular targets. Still, the game is not without its blemishes, notably I am disappointed by the lack of attributes in the game (Strength, Endurance, Speed, etc.). While the perks when leveling up do give you a great deal of control in regard to how you would like to play the game, I can't help but feel combining all of the attributes into the categories of Health, Magicka, and Stamina oversimplified the leveling system too much. Still, all in all the game is absolutely amazing, and there is no way I could fully explain everything it does right in this review, so I will simply end it here with a hearty recommendation that anyone reading this review go out and buy this game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the best Elder Scrolls game by far. Before this game I never payed attention to the series, and then when I played the game I just loved it. The world is massive, full of cities, villages and other things. The graphics are simply amazing. And all the moves you can learn is also great. But the thing I love most about this game is the ability to turn into a werewolf. Really great work. Bethesda has done it again! Expand

I know graphics aren't what a game is all about but when I started the game (on ULTRA) I thought I'ld accidently set it on Medium or low. lol I swear I rechecked the video setting 5 times to make sure it wasn't a mistake. I'm gonna say it - it's the outdated console's (xbox and ps3) that are to blame. The console's manufacturers are milking their current box's for all there worth and the effect it has on PC games is developers working with making new gen games based on crappy crappy outdated hardware. As we all know the money is where the console noobs are at. So we will continue to get S word lol graphics until a new console gen emerges. From the youtube video's I was so excited to look at an artifact (sword, shield or food) and look at it in amazing detail but Nooooo. To support much of what i've been saying have a look at RAGE - similar situation. The detail level is horribly low and this was another disaapointment. Then there is the console port - ok it's a OK console port but there are obvious things like the GUI settings for the console pads LT and RT - WTF how could you overlook taking this out of the PC release.
OK im off the whole consoles are to blame section
Combat: Having so much fun with stealth and Archery - good job here. Melee combat has been slightly improved but still have a while to go to be interesting. Haven't touched magic - not playing that character yet.
More voice actors and this has improved but still needs improvement. Characters are still rather stiff.
Love how NPC's are more aware of your actions and comment as such. I was having fun using my shouts in town and a guard came along and told me to shut up lol. I love the random encounters.
So why am I giving the game an 8/10 with all this complaining. Despite the short coming's and a few area's the game is still as immersive as ever and im enjoying it. The graphics were full DX11 and not DX9 overlook the rest of the issues. This is a open world game and realistic graphics really does help you be in this world.

If you give people what they want then you are making a commercial game. When I bought this game the salesperson asked me if I was aware of the system requirements as all good salespersons should do. Then right after he said that perhaps it was a stupid question as people that bought this game knows what it is about. Perhaps this says more about the game than anyone can. This game is an unique piece of art. So was most of the other RPG's I have mentioned. I don't compare this to any of the other RPG's. If did that then I would not have bought this. I bought this because I yearned for a new story. For a new adventure. Judging by how satisfied Morrowind and Oblivion left me feeling I knew that Bethesda would not disappoint. Trying to keep the masses happy with this game was a tough job that I think Bethesda did well. Not only do they have grand impossible and bloody combat against creatures much larger than the character but a lot of smaller more cerebral things to do. Creating a living world within the confines of a PC/Console that performs well and "lives" seems impossible given the limited resources available on all the platforms. It is a fresh outlook on Tamriel that seems very different to the other Elder Scrolls games. Six hours I can not account for when I fired it up and I am thinking of restarting because it seems to me that I made a mistake on one of my choices. The world to me now seems "wrong" and I must fix it. LOL Giving it a high score is only right. We did not get a perfect game. We did not get a well tested game. I don't think most Artists are happy with their final product anyway. That still does not make their masterpieces any less enjoyable. Most of the bugs in this game will probably be fixed. The nice thing about the PC version is that the community of players usually step up and try to get it close to perfection. The more Mods a game has the more I think people loved it. The only reason why I don't give a 10 is because I agree that perhaps there is no real sense of accomplishment in completing some of the faction story lines. That could also be that I have yet to explore everything in the game and have just not found out everything about the factions. Expand

While Oblivion had the open-ended gameplay that forms the core of TES, it lacked that magic of exploring an exotic setting, with its been-there-done-that high fantasy medieval setting. In Oblivion, you also could not help but feel like you were playing second fiddle to the true star of the game, Martin Septim, to whom you served as an errand boy and supporting actor. Thankfully, Skyrim returns to the days where you take on the role of someone preordained by destiny to play a critical role in the fate of the world, and this is reflected by the unique abilities bestowed upon you during the course of the story.

Not all is well however, as the clunky controls simply cannot be ignored and prevent Skyrim from getting a 9.5-10.0 score in my book. The oversized text and menu navigation / organization point to a clearly consolized UI that was ported to the PC with no changes, and with no thought to usability. Mouse navigation is imprecise and laggy, and doing something as simple as checking your inventory or viewing perk trees is made unnecessarily cumbersome and sluggish.

While in almost all other respects, Skyrim is a step forward in the TES franchise, the UI is a sore point and is effectively a regression from Morrowind's UI, which was vastly more usable. Other than the incredibly obtuse journal system in Morrowind, there was very little else that needed to be changed. One can only hope that Bethsoft takes heed of the complaints and does not continue the slide toward unnecessary consolation of things that should not be consolized in a PC version of a game.

First person, I like fps', but for some reason I hate it with a sword/shield, just feels bleh, I was reading over the review for Skyrim and someone mentioned it had 3rd person view, so I thought "why not?"

Glad I did, I had none of the hype built up, just going off of my previous experience with ES games, and I'm really liking it so far.

I'm going to do a quick comparison with another game I absolutely loved this year, The Witcher 2.

    Graphics-

Witcher 2 - I actually run max settings on both games minus ubersampling on tw2, which is ridiculous, but even then the Witcher 2 looks a bit better. Better textures and whatnot, more vibrant feeling world. Skyrim - Hey, 2nd isn't bad, this still looks awesome on max, to be honest the gear etc looks a bit drab...but then again it's probably more realistic. Also the world view (i.e. when you're running across the world and can see for 10 miles in every direction) is awesome, I really feel like I'm in a "world" vs a few zones like I did with the witcher.

    Voice Acting -
Skyrim - it's not bad, honestly I felt like they did things like interruptions better in Skyrim than in tw2.
Witcher - more flavor, yet not as seamless

    Story -
I guess it depends on what you like, Skyrim feels _way_ more open, vs the Witcher felt somewhat open but mostly linear.

    Combat-
Tw2 has skyrim beat imo, Skyrim has a better selection of skills/trees, but TW2 combat feels a little more skill based, why isn't there any sort of dodge mechanic in Skyrim?

Out of the gates - I've heard people complaining about performance issues with Skyrim, but man it's nothing compared to TW2 at launch. I was getting 20fps in TW2, and it took about 10 different tweaks before I could run it at max fps (with the same graphic settings), I shouldn't have to do all that myself!

All in all this is a solid game, coming from someone with really no previous bias/expectation. I had huge expectations for TW2, and the game fell a little short, but even then I'd say they're about as good. TW2 has better graphics, better combat, and better voice acting. Skyrim makes you feel like you're in the world much better, is more open, and does everything decently. I'm glad I picked this up, this was a very nice surprise.

This shows how much content there is in this game.

Like many games at release, Skyrim still has a few bugs such as quests that cannot be completed due to some unlucky bug happening, but there's just so much content overall that you can easily skip one quest and go to another. Otherwise the autosave feature will work nicely for you if you insist on completing every possible quest. I believe I've only experienced one crash so far which I'm unsure what caused it, but I went to the same area and it didn't crash again so I didn't bother with it.

The weather effects are very nicely done and, if you choose to, you can set most of the settings to the point where this game will just be so much better looking than a console game that you'll be happy to be on PC.

The Competence system is enjoyable and leads to some customization that isn't directly reflecting what you do in game. Sure, you need to attain a certain level in the skill to unlock a competence, but you're in no obligation to take a competence in Lockpicking if you leveled mostly from picking locks. You can save it for another skill or pick one of the early competences of that skill, letting you customize yourself a bit more.

The NPC interaction is enjoyable, although some NPCs do repeat themselves too often which can turn out to be annoying when playing for a long time.

Overall, I'm far from disappointed with this game. In fact, I didn't feel interested as I am with Skyrim as I've been with any other recent games I've played and could even see myself starting over once I finish the game on my current character. That's how interesting this game is.

Easily accessablle menus and systems make the game seem less daunting, while also providing more content than there was to be had in previous game. Gorgeous graphics (especially in the constellation skill building system- wow!) and an astouding attention to detail are but one reason to play the hell out of this thing. It is more additive than any shooter I have played (and I have burned hundreds of hours playing CoD games alone) with the mind-boggling number of quests and options for customization allowing the player to make their own Skyrim. If you want to only play the main storyline, you can, but I can assure you, you will be missing out. The greatest achievement here is the choice given to the player- you can explore the universe however and as extensively as you want. A barebones playthrough, or an every-nook-and-cranny approach (or anything in between) are equally possible and fun. To me, storyline is the most important part of games, and this game has a respectable plotline. While certainly not up there with the Bioware games (Mass Effect, KOTOR, check them out, they are amazing) the gameplay is more than enough to make this a splendid experience for anyone. The only reason I give this a 9 instead of a 10 is the occaisional glitches and bugs. This is unfortunately an issue, and you will sometimes get stuck in a corner or have some other problem, but it is extremely ppolished in comparison to previous games, particularly the laggy and bug-ridden Fallout New Vegas. I really like how peoples heads track you when you move around them. As if they're real people. The AI is pretty good in my opinion. I feel like I'm actually part of their world and they are not just there for me to talk to, or kill. The terrain is pretty accurate as well. beautiful pines, birches and aspens. beasts that actually look like real world beasts. The first time I seen a dog and a child, I was like, about time! Though there were dogs in TES:IV they looked rather bland. The dogs are very life like in this game. I love the crafting that they have brought into the game. you can make every piece of gear or kit you'll ever need in game. From armor to swords and potions to a salmon steak. Mining, skinning, chopping wood, fishing. All very awesome.

Now on for my very small complaint. The IU is terrible, much rather have the oblivion or a hybrid of the Fallout UI than this one. As well as the mouse speed. Even on the fastest setting the mouse tracking is slow. Your arms and armor to not receive any damage, which I got a little disheartened about after seeing such amazing blacksmith set ups throughout the game. I was hoping that there would be a cross over from the Fallout series where you could use two of the same items to repair one and etc. As for leveling up and skills. This was kind of hard to figure out but after a few level ups I started to get the hang of it. As for combat, I'm getting rather tired of my followers getting in my way and taking a blow from my axe instead of my enemies. I hope there is a way I can fix this later on in game (a perk perhaps?) or someone makes a mod to fix the problem. Also, The only challenge I seem to get is by fighting giants and mammoths. Everyone else is usually dead in 2-4 hits without me getting less that 90% hp in damage. Well, this is my person opinion about this game. I have enjoy it very much so far and plan on having many more hours of fun with it, I'm not even 10% done with it as I've been exploring and taking in the wonder views. Amazing job Bethesda. I only wish that I could have afforded that $2,000 gaming PC I wanted for this game and the collectors edition.

But I enjoyed it nevertheless. About a year ago, I took Oblivion off my shelves and installed it but this time I also patched with the mod's that were touted as great and that really enhanced my game experience. So I was looking forward to Skyrim and when it was released I purchased it with much anticipation. Let me first give my gripes. My machine is fairly decent. 8GB RAM, 1GB ATI 3xxx HD graphics card, HD monitor and more than enough hard disk space than ever needed. Win 7 64 Bit. No weird programs or software running. And yet when I cranked to HD levels of graphics, the game was sluggish and was performing in Slow Motion. I loathe to think that a 1GB Graphics card RAM is not enough for running a game smoothly. Pity! Now I am debating whether to invest in a new graphics card splurging a few hundred bucks just for a single game. Now for the good part and some game gripes! I enjoyed the intro. I enjoyed the setup. And I am enjoying the quests. Despite the piss poor documentation that game with the game, I am certain that I am not doing justice by making the most of the experience. For e.g. using the smelters, workbench, grinding stone, forge, alchemy set etc. There is nothing to indicate how to use these, in what order. Like many in this world of gamer, I am a causal player who plays a lot but does not dwell into the physics and math of the game. So boo-hoo to players like me, who just wander the maps and just kill wolves, bandits but don't realize that there is a world of stuff just beyond that. There are several forums available but then like any good value garnered by good information, I am soaked in too much information. I am not that patient and I do not want lack of information to ruin my game experience. And the key mapping was much better in Oblivion (found a Mod which makes it easier). I also use a controller called Razer Nostromo and I find playing this game a much better experience than using my keyboard. For the game itself, I am awed by the depth and length of it. Combat is evolved (despite my always freezing in the middle and getting killed for it). Overall, I am going to enjoy and I will resist the temptation of using cheat codes (its a boon and a bane). Over-hyped. Too much walking, and riding a horse around vast amounts of land, and not enough action. Also, it'd be nice to know what your level is, versus the level of the enemy on screen consistently. I hate getting reamed by an enemy npc, because I couldn't see it level vs. my level.

Being able to jump into the Elder Scrolls world was nice and I did notice the game running alot better than Bethesda's recent games.

I'm playing it on the PC, and so far hadn't had any problems with crashes, only when I'm alt+tabbing constantly. For those of you that do play on the PC and didn't notice, you can add hotkeys to your equipment from the favorites menu.

I've tried this game on the console as well and I have to say, I'm glad I'm a PC gamer. The console version of this is too jittery and buggy. Still I wish the devs would think more about the PC community, and stop streamlining everything. I miss the complexity of a game and now everything is made for the convenience for kids and people who are too lazy to get into the learning curve

All in all, the game is fun and anticipating the upcoming DLCs and mods.

Skyrim lives up to the expectations of the Elder Scrolls series, for the most part. The main story itself is uninteresting. The whole civil war thing seems really tacked on to me. I eventually chose sides and started taking over cities as part of the war quests but then switched back to the MQ to finish up. It seemed that neither side had notice that I had picked a side. Both acted the same way. This really broken the realism for me. Bethesda generally doesn't make these types of mistakes.

The dragons (which people have been asking for forever) really don't add anything to the game. They are just another creature with loads of health. Fighting them becomes canned as they go through the same motions. The first encounter was interesting. The rest were boring. Even worse is the fact that they randomly appear out of nowhere (a feature Bethesda bragged about). The problem is that if you teleport somewhere to follow a quest you might suddenly have to fight one of these stupid dragons. Because of their large health it can take several minutes. I got to the point where I would just run away because fighting them wasn't worth anything. I hope that dragons don't make an appearance in future ES games.

I've never been a fan of the leveling system of ES. Skyrim tried the Fallout approach of perks and it might have worked if the perks were actually that useful. For the most part they are useless. I much prefer the Oblivion skill system. But even then I should get rewarded for finding new areas. Make me want to spend time in this world Bethesda!! Instead my reward was generally yet another dragon battle I didn't want. You'd figure with all these dragons flying around that they would just take over the world.

Some of the early enemies are, again, overpowering. Spellcasters and higher level bandits appear at frightening frequency even early on making melee attacks deadly. Once you've acquired a certain shield (after a side quest) though they become trivial. By midway through the game there was no enemy that was even a remote challenge to my character. Bethesda really needs to work on a better balanced system.

Overall Skyrim was fun but I was honestly bored by the end of it. I wasn't interested in finishing the lackluster main quest nor searching the world for anything (because I gained nothing by doing so). I just ran through the final main quests as fast as I could. I see they now have DLC for the game but I doubt I'll get it. Nothing they throw at me wouuld be challenging (unless they take all your equipment - which is a popular pasttime) and it would probably have more dragons. Unless they come out with an expansion on the level of Shivering Isles I'll have to say goodbye to Skyrim until the next ES game comes along.

Im thinking the magic system is an interesting way of going about it, instead of making a new spell that does only so much fire damage and ice damage, you just put fire on the left, ice on the right, and go to town. Now, i don't know how many of my fellow reviewers have tried to make a fantastic storyline with no issues and gripping gameplay through and through (*In a sandbox world*) but for what it is (certain storylines do fall flat oddly), its pretty awesome. While you still feel the fact that your a player in a world full of npc's, just looking at how much they have improved since oblivion is great. No doubt, might i add, once you done with what the devs have created, it can grow exponentially from there with the modding community that has already polished the graphics and will within a reasonable amount of time start unleashing their own mini-countries onto the interwebs.

Skyrim has a poor story, with no twists and turns in the plot, no stunning moral choice options which will affect the outcome of your experience, and there is just no justification to why your character should be good or bad; there's just no incentive, because it doesn't affect the outcome. The combat is fun but clunky, and doesn't flow like other games I have played. Also, the voice acting and character animations are fairly mediocre, as half the characters in the world have exactly the same voices and looks. The ending is pretty unsatisfying, and lacks the spectacularity in other games. After playing the Mass Effect series, I simply cannot say that Skyrim is as good as everyone is saying. Expand

I have to say that Skyrim has some of the best music/soundtrack of any game, and it mixes SO WELL with this world. You feel so free when you play this game, in a good and fluent way. It is easy to determine what you can and can't handle and you would think traveling is a chore, but its just too fun. A few things I would like to see changed for their MMO though would have to be a more diverse SET of voice acting for NPCs so its not so repetitive, and also the combat. Having clocked up around 80 hours on Skyrim now, I feel just about qualified to write a review. It is fair to say that Skyrim is a very good action RPG, but is rather too shallow to offer a truly great roleplaying experience.

By doing away with the standard base statistics (strength, agility, personality, etc) in the name of simplification, Bethesda has actually cheapened the gamer's experience significantly. Fallout: New Vegas offered a great insight as to how those statistics could affect the player's choices in a game, from different dialogue options with real consequences to being able to solve certain tasks for certain NPCs. Without those differing routes to the same conversational goal, interactions with NPCs feel flat, bland and pointless.

Of further frustration is that NPCs fail to recognise the player's achievements in the realm, though they comment freely on abilities of which they ought to know nothing. "Hands to yourself, sneak thief," a Whiterun guard might tell me, though I've never been spotted thieving in Whiterun (or anywhere near it). I am, however, a thegn of Whiterun and, despite the Jarl's promise to let all and sundry know my new rank, I am never addressed as thegn by anyone save my huscarl (who, I am sure, does it only to humour me). The addition of companions is tiresome in the sense that it adds nothing to the game, save a beast of burden. Most are pretty poor combatants and the dungeoneer will find most of his time protecting the person whom he has hired to protect him. Followers offer no unique interactions or personalised side quests and, in that respect, compare unfavourably with Fallout: New Vegas and the Mass Effect series. They feel like an entirely wasted opportunity to add some roleplay value to the game.

There are a large number of quests to complete, ranging from the benign (advise lovers for the Temple of Mara) to the downright evil (lure priests to their death for demented gods). There are some real moral choices to be made. However, there don't tend to be particularly profound consequences for those moral choices, which is rather disappointing.

The raidiant quest system works well as a means of getting the player to explore the whole map. While the radiant quests themselves are necessarily simplistic, that is entirely forgiveable in the circumstances. Far more frustrating are the scripted side-quests, the College of Winterhold plot being particular source of dissatisfaction at its short and shallow scope. When I arrived, I was learning to cast ward spells. Three hours later, I was the Archmage, thanks to an infuriatingly simplistic deus ex machina plot device, and without being a noticeably better spellcaster. Morrowind required me to do tasks for various mages and to master several magical disciplines. Winterhold obviously sets a lower premium on actually being any good at magic. There are, of course, things Skyrim does brilliantly. It's a very handsome game to look at, even on medium graphics settings. The dungeon design has improved immensely since Oblivion (even if the inevitable secret door back to the beginning seems like something of a cop-out). The dual wielding system, while not perfect, is an interesting development and a welcome addition to the game. Even in snowy Skryim, there are a variety of terrains and architectural styles which gave the game a real feeling of size. The underlying plot dynamics are interesting: the Nords portray themselves as valiantly fighting for their homeland against the elven oppressors and the weak imperium, but themselves oppress Skyrim's native folk in the west. But the game feels unfinished, even hasty in places and, after 80 hours play, leaves me with the distinct impression that it could have been so much more.

There is so much to do and I feel like I'm barely making a dent into the content, and I know the modding community will add a ton of replay value in the coming months. So why is it only a 7? Subtract 1 point for being unoriginal in many ways. Same guilds, same dungeons, same enemies, same boring inhabitants as Oblivion. Oh, and the same bug ridden engine, which brings us to the next problem. Subtract another point for the myriad of annoyances. NPCs chit-chat with you incessisantly, repeating useless dialogue over and over. Followers don't level correctly and become useless after a few level ups. Player mages are UP while player warriors are OP. Dragon spam ruins immersion. The list goes on. And finally, subtract another point for the serious bugs - broken quests, #rimlag on the PS3, and releasing patch 1.2 which broke more than it fixed. Please publishers, stop, stop, stop shipping beta versions of games. I know a lot of reviewers dropped the ball in properly reporting these bugs, but the game publisher is still ultimately responsible. Expand

Skyrim may be my favorite game of 2011 to date, and that was after I had waited for Batman: Arkham City with the greatest anticipation. Skyrim beat Arkham by enough that I may have to finish the Batman game next year. Something to look forward to.

Gameplay has improved significantly over Oblivion. Where Oblivion's skill based system was often confusing and complex, Skyrim has made it very straight forward to understand. The best part is you don't really have to create a character "class". Instead you can simply choose your own play style and your skill will level up appropriately. I love the freedom of play style this offers.

Unlike the seemingly barren landscape of Oblivion, the land of Skyrim is vast and filled with adventures at every turn. I've wandered for hours and not reached an obvious border, though I know they are out there. And this game encourages exploration like no other game before it. Just heading back from one quest I ran into a new village and three new dungeon areas and finally had to call it quits for the day even though I was constantly tempted to look around "just one more bend in the road."

NPC's are a treat as well. Instead of the cardboard mannequin's of Oblivion, the NPC's in Skyrim are alive. You can sit, watch and listen as they go about their daily business. And they react to your presence even if you don't approach them. Sometimes a new quest line will be opened up by an NPC who approaches my character asking for assistance. The entire experience is incredibly organic. Nothing like the silly "look for the exclamation mark over the NPC's head" of the MMO world. The graphics of Skyrim do have issues. While it is easy to tweak the game to get good performance, the textures often look better at a distance than they do close up. Of course, I spend so much time gazing off into the distance looking for that next adventure, I am never bothered by the few muddy textures around me.

There are glitches. Skyrim is not just a computer game, it is a great big computer game with a vast complex environment and interactive items everywhere. So to expect it to be perfect is unrealistic. The flaws never are significant enough to destroy my immersion. I'm know there are obsessive types who will examine every brick and bristle with the occasional NPC that gets stuck in a conversation loop. Frankly if the immense amount of content and imagination that Skyrim has to offer on the plus side does not make up for the rare problems, you probably won't be satisfied by a video game released this year.

I honestly think that Skyrim is the game to play in 2011 if you can only play one.

I can pick up a mug in a tavern or enter some random NPC's house and steal everything. The world is living and breathing, with NPCs striking random dialogues with each other, bandits grumbling about the hardships of bandit life, etc .

Voice acting, visuals are all top notch. There's basic physics.

Sure, there is lot's to do, and after 3 playthroughs, I don't think I ever finished the dragonborn or civil war plotlines.

And here comes my biggest gripe with the game - the bad RPG system. I played just about every western RPG since 1998, and Skyrim is just bad. Having only health, stamina and magicka along with armor means that just about every melee or ranged character feels the same. Dodge-block-hit, thousands of time throughout the game create a very dull feeling of combat.

Without the 10 primary skill system from Oblivion, the character levels up too fast, where a single dungeon may mean 1-2 level ups. This means that a lot of content, like goblins (do they exist)? or Skeevers is just gone. Very quickly all dungeons are populated with bandits with elven weaponry, then Adept necromancers, then vampires in ebony armor. The entire world levels up just because I have sold some items to a vendor and levelled up my speech skill.

With no way to degrade or lose armor, the player quickly acquires the best pieces of armor and weaponry available, which creates a dungeon crawling experience where I don't care about the loot. There's nothing in this dungeon that can come even close to my own crafted/enchanted/improved armor and weapons. Everything is vendor trash, and apart from the trainers there aren't really that many money sinks in this game for me to spend end game gold.

Very soon my character becomes godlike in it's ability to slay everything that stands in its way. Sure, I can bump the difficulty all the way up to legendary, but this only makes combat feels worse. Instead of killing an enemy with 3 hits, I can dance around it for 2 minutes, slowly chipping away at it's health. Not really that fun.

I dont know why people like this. It is so boring. The world is not to my liking but hey it is my personal point of view. I tried getting into it but everything after 30mins or so I will lose interest in the game. I know people say it is a perfect game but if I cant get into it, it means the game is boring as hell for me.

And DRAGONS!!! The world is alive!! The world is so beautiful. A truly immersive experience you wouldn't want to miss. It is a much more in depth open-world as compared to newer games like Fallout 4, or the not-so-open world games like MGSV and The Witcher 3. Play good or bad. Join the thieves guild or be an assassin with the Dark Brotherhood. Play with magic or swing your sword while running around like a crazy person. You can get married or adopt a child. It's all entirely up to you!!.

When you are given a quest, it's up to you on how you want to approach the situation. You want to fight everyone, you can. Sneak pass and play stealth, Yup. Set up traps, go archer? Magical spell so you can feel like Harry Porter or whatever? Or you might be even lucky enough to talk your way through in some cases. All is possible. Everything rarely feels scripted or linear and It doesn't demand that you approach it the way they want you to (ie MGSV and TW3). Story and side quests are mostly well written. It requires quite a few decision making and your decisions actually do change the world. It's bizarre. Characters are well designed too. The armour, the weapons are sooo awesome. They look nice and feel nice. Crafting is so addictive. Do not leave them out when playing this game. Music is nice (though I think Oblivion has better music). You can create your own character, male or female, have different races to choose from (not forced to play as random old man). And mods!!! The mods add so much. The graphics mod will make this game better looking than games lots of newer games.

Overall, Skyrim is a game on a different level. It's the ultimate game to date that doesn't feel outdated in terms of the gameplay. Slap on a graphics mod and you will have the ultimate package. More than 500 hours spent on this game. Best! 10 out of 10!!

Unfortunately, Skyrim trips and falls on its own (most probably, to make the cool-sounding deadline of 11-11-11) and just before it reaches perfection as the ultimate specimen of its genre, it self-destructs in a crucial aspect of game design: the interface and the peripheral components (inventory, journal, map, etc)... but that is not to say that Skyrim is anything but a truly majestic, epic RPG that will suck you right in its cosmos.
