What a great game, until paid mods completely ruined it. What were you all thinking? This game is a great example of an excellent game ruined by greed.

Fantasic game, what with all the free mods that you can get. It would be a crappy game if, I don't know, you had to pay $2.99 for each of the 50 mods you want to use.

I sure do love all this third party DLC! Yessiree, paid mods was a FANTASTIC IDEA! If you want to play this game I'd recommend you get it from Kickass.to or something. Don't give Bethesda or Valve any money, the retards don't deserve it.

Skyrim is a fun game, but to get the best experience, you need to install a bunch of mods. It's pretty much the last safe haven from the cynical strategies of manufactured blockbusters and DLC.

It's pretty much the last safe haven from the cynical strategies of manufactured blockbusters and DLC.

Now this fine tradition is under attack from corporate fat cats who want to earn a slice of the pie for doing nothing. It amounts to the routine exploitation of hobbyists. This isn't just a bad business move, though; it hurts the game. Already, we have seen free versions of mods incorporate nags to upgrade to the paid verison. We've seen modders take their work off the Nexus because frauds are stealing their work and uploading it for a fee on the Workshop. We've also seen free mods taken down and uploaded exclusive to the Workshop, hidden behind a paywall. I'm not sure how anyone could sustain the argument that this will result in a better product, or that it doesn't affect everyone adversely.

Perhaps most disturbingly, the move incentivises publishers to coerce develoepers into releasing a faulty or incomplete game, because they stand to benefit from the content and fixes that the community will surely provide. They might as well lay off some of their staff as well, because they have a plentiful source of cheap labour in hobbyists.

Don't listen to the lies of those who advocate paid mods. Tell a friend about the disturbing precedent that was set last week by Valve and Bethesda. Free the mods!

Thank you Bethesda, you have single-handedly destroyed RPGs by taking real thinking out of the equation.
Skyrim is a huge slap in the face to those of us who remember what a true Role Playing Game is really supposed to be. It has decent graphics, but that's its only redeeming quality.

A middlingly good RPG which became something incredible with the help of its strong modding community - as Oblivion and Morrowind did before it - now crippled by Bethesda & Valve's attempt to monetise that community. A textbook example of how to turn the whole market against your series and your company.

Disgusting by Valve and Bethseda to bring in the paid mods scheme. Shame on you. Will no longer support such greedy tactics. Horse Armor ruined gaming with the introduction of DLCs (also by Bethseda), now this... this will end modding and bring in much darker times for gaming. I am sadden for what's now ahead for future generations of gamers.

Until the fire nation came... I mean Bethesda became greedy.

    "How greedy." you ask skeptically.

    - Stuck deal with Steam to allow the modding community to charge for mods.
    - Deal included Theft of Wages from said modding community; Author only keeps 25% of income, the rest is split between Steam and Bethesda.
    - Damaging PC Gaming by taking a chapter from EA and pushing micro-transactions as a core part of the system.

I will never PAY for a mod. Ever. Donate after tremendous work, effort and long term commitment to their project? Absolutely, but I'll never PAY to use it because lets face it - Mod authors frequently abandon projects. What's stopping them from making/stealing a project, getting the cash and bailing out?

Nothing. That's what's stopping them. There's plenty more on this subject, just look around for the threads.

Bad form. Bad form all around.

Bethesda has been showing that they don't care for years now, they release broken buggy messes then rely on modders to fix it for them, problem is, now that those modders can now charge up to $100 (should they wish) for these fixes you might as well not even worry about buying the game until this policy is reversed.

This game's developer, Bethesda, in conjunction with Valve, has begun to enforce a paid mods system. This is reprehensible. The game was barely worth playing without mods, and to force them behind a paywall is mind-bogglingly greedy.

Unfortunately, Skyrim trips and falls on its own (most probably, to make the cool-sounding deadline of 11-11-11) and just before it reaches perfection as the ultimate specimen of its genre, it self-destructs in a crucial aspect of game design: the interface and the peripheral components (inventory, journal, map, etc)... but that is not to say that Skyrim is anything but a truly majestic, epic RPG that will suck you right in its cosmos.
