I really enjoyed the game. Plenty of characters to choose from, pretty stages, lot of customization and lot of things to see in gallery - basically all of previous tekken cinematic and artworks. It has been a long time since I have played a Tekken game. Unfortunately I don't think Tekken is for me anymore. Too much like Street Fighter and the "rage art" limit defensive options. There is so many fighting games being played now there is no reason to give this one a try.

Tekken 7 doesn’t do anything to draw in new players, and doesn’t really mix-up its mechanics enough to make it feel different from prior entries. Also single player is poorly written and short the game is only great if you are a die-hard fanatic of the genre. Be aware the PC version has anti-consumer DRM trash called DENUVO

If online play is the only thing you enjoy about Tekken (which did not exist back in the day) then i am afraid even that don't hold up solid in T7. Rage quitters, very few players to VS.

The only thing i liked about T7 is it's visuals and art style.

The music is straight trash, crappy tuned dubstep.. it is god awful, i turned the BGM all the way down to get even a remotely enjoyable experience when playing.

Lack of game modes, lack of any real depth.. and absolutely zero personality.

It's possibly the lowest point for Tekken ever, Tekken 4 got slammed but it does a better job than this.

While Tekken 7 is a very solid fighting game experience, it's very much lacking in terms of content, especially if you're only considering the base game with no additional content.

Unlike previous entries in the franchise, Tekken 7's missing many game modes that have become staples of the series. Team battle, survival mode, time attack, and Tekken tunes, are all strangely absent.

However, Tekken Bowl has returned as DLC, albeit only with local versus; as well as the replay theater, which came earlier this year as apart of the 3.20 update.

Visually, the game looks very nice, with colors and set-pieces in each stage that pop. The Fated Retribution update of the arcades, otherwise known as the Console/PC release, finally gave all characters updated costumes, as they've previously had the same default costumes since 2004's Tekken 5.

The game's character models themselves have honestly taken a hit, comparing them to Tekken Tag Tournament 2. This is most likely due to the fact that the game is now running on Unreal Engine 4, and proper care wasn't taken with the models.

Similar to the visuals, the character selection is also a mixed bag. Past fighters, such as Christie Monteiro, Baek Doo San, and Bruce Irvin are missing, while others may be unlocked via paid DLC, such as Anna Williams, or, Lei Wulong. The latter of which has been in every Tekken game since Tekken 2, ignoring the defunct, free-to-play Tekken Revolution.

That isn't to say the base roster is bad by any means, though. Fan favorites, such as Eddy Gordo, Lili Rochefort, and Jin Kazama are apart of the default 36-character roster.

One final criticism is the game's overall sound design and music. Many characters in Tekken games have two voice actors, however, Julia Chang's is definitely the most noticeable, as her new voice actress is much higher pitch and doesn't mesh well with her older in-game grunts.

Mileage will vary with something as subjective as music, however no other Tekken game to date has had quite as much dub-step, and if you're expecting music more in-line with older games, you'll be forced to use the Tekken Jukebox, which is only available on PS4, or with mods on PC.

With all the bad out of the way, the game-play is as solid as ever. Every character in the game is useful. There's not a single throwaway character in the game. Yes, tier lists exist for Tekken 7, however, even the low tiers have come out on top in tournaments around the globe.

Throw breaks have been made easier to deal with, as opposed to previous games. Back rolling is now invincible, and there's now armored attacks, which can only be broken by low attacks, as well as a host of other changes, that makes the game feel great to play, and unique from its prequels.

Slow-motion zooming happens during intense final moments of the match, which oddly enough, doesn't interrupt game-play. Each character has a flashy, time-stopping cinematic super move as a come-back mechanic.

In closing, as with any fighting game, your enjoyment comes from practice and repetition. Testing your skills against different opponents, learning to outsmart, and conquer. It is a solid competitive game, with some obvious flaws holding it back, like a great steak coupled with a half-baked potato. No wonderfully steamed vegetables to go along with your fantastic cut of meat, and an undesired potato. That's Tekken 7.

Tekken 7 is a fighting game with seemingly a bunch to do, but just can’t stand up to today’s competition...
There is a story mode here complete with cut scenes which is probably the best part of the game...
Its tells the father son struggle of Heihachi and kazuya... as Kazuya sets out to kill his father for killing his mother…
The story mode goes a bit all over the place, so it’s hard to follow at times, but there’s definitely some emotion here, and I did find the story mode to be intriguing..
However this story mode is only 2 hours long…
There are character specific chapters to do after you complete the story mode that all tell a silly conflict between 2 fighters and end in a nice short cut scene at the end of the battle, and gives every character in the roster some personality...
To add even more personality to your characters... there’s a treasure battle mode here where you can earn fight money and clothing items to customize your entire roster…
However there are few unique outfits for each character
A lot of customizable options are shared... and even worse… you have to rebuy the exact same article of clothing even if you already own it for another character…
This is a decent feature though and you can even change the color of most items here…
    The actual gameplay though…
    Its stiff..
Tekken 7 feels extremely slow stiff and annoying compared to the competition like injustice 2…
Enemies feel spammy at times with their constant spam blocking and spam dodge attack from behind combos...
This can to lead to many frustrating feeling moments.. Where you’ll feel you need to get lucky to progress rather than breathe and go back in with a new approach…
This game is not newcomer friendly at all, as all of the cool moves are hidden behind ridiculous combinations of buttons…
Feeling like a pro will take a lot of time and dedication to this game…
Not recommend for the casual fighting game fan at all…
Though there is a more casual addition to tekken 7 called a rage art…
When you’re down on health and your back is against the wall, you can release a powerful attack like a super move from the injustice games, just with the touch of a button if you’d like as this move along with other button combinations are mappable on your controller…
    And onto the online mode..
It’s completely broken for me on the PlayStation 4…
I couldn’t connect to any matches... so my fun with this game ended when the 2 hour campaign ended…
Tekken fans I’m sure will love Tekken 7
    But fighting fans in general…
Tekken 7 is miles behind the competition and needs to catch up…
Content feels lacking with the likes of Injustice 2 out there now
And the button mashy memorize a million button sequences get lucky combat is just not enjoyable to me anymore…
    I give Tekken 7
    a 6/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There's a lot to like here.

The story mode actually gives you reason to care about the characters, specifically the Mishimas. It's a rather tragic tale that really rounds out the main characters of the series. And the character chapters are interesting and sometimes funny/goofy too, again giving depth to the characters.

Also, as a PC gamer, I'm stoked that Tekken is finally on PC. Easily the best the series has ever looked and you can tell they were playing to the new hardware available when they designed the arenas. There's a lot of pretty lighting, particles, and stuff to look at in the background and it would all be kinda distracting if you weren't so laser-focused on the fighting. The characters look great as well and their costumes have some nice physics effects, namely Gigas and Yoshimitsu.

Now onto the meat of any fighting game and the only part of the game I really take any issue with: gameplay. I'll just say right off the bat, I don't like the Rage Arts. I think they're kinda dumb and cheap. Like when I was playing treasure mode, I got my health knocked down pretty low a couple times, but I never really felt that tense about it because unless the CPU is really trashing you, you can just throw a rage art as soon as it's available and take out about a quarter of their health. It just feels cheap. When I had to use those, I didn't feel like I won because I was good at the game, it just felt like I won because I was ok at it and then pressed the "win" button when it was available. People say "oh just dodge or block the Rage Arts", but it's super easy to hit the CPUs with it and it really just feels cheap. They look cool and all, but again, it's only one button press, so you don't really feel like you did anything cool. The invulnerability frames they've introduced kinda suck as well. I've seen that stuff in other fighters before and that was one of the main reasons I've always gravitated towards Tekken: no **** Sure, some characters have spammy moves, but that's every fighting game ever. There was no win button and no **** attacks where the attacker couldn't take damage.

Also, the story mode gameplay isn't really all that great either and really highlights some of my main issues with the gameplay. As mentioned, I like the story itself and the flashes of memories during the Heihachi/Kazumi and the Heihachi/Kazuya fights were really cool and added an emotional charge to the fight. That said, the "Story Assist" is a joke. Like the Rage Art, it's another "easy" button that the devs added to the game for reasons I can't fathom. The whole point of a fighting game is to learn the combos and git gud. Also, some of the fights felt sorta **** at times. As of writing this, I'm stuck on the Heihachi/Devil Kazuya fight. The last bit where Kazuya knocks Heihachi down to about 15% health and then you have to beat him would be fine if he didn't become invincible at his last 50% health. How the hell am I supposed to beat him when he's just plowing through my attacks and kicking my head in? Not to mention that **** insta-kill move he uses. It's barely telegraphed and he often catches me with it in the middle of an attack since I can't knock him down or even grab him, so I can't block or dodge.

In short, this entry in the Tekken series is good, but would be perfect in my opinion if it had just stuck to the gameplay that made it great. The Rage Arts, Story Assist, and invulnerability frames they added really detract from the fun of playing for me. Incorporating elements of other games like this just makes Tekken a less unique experience and I've always liked it for being something different; A fighting game that flows even if you don't know 15-button combos and super moves. The new features mentioned break that flow and hurt the experience.

It's true many will tell me that a game should evolve as time goes, but guys, rage arts in Tekken? I will never accept that, I tried really hard to adapt and approach Tekken 7 using a different mindset, but I failed. I played couple hundreds of ranked matches (which is obviously the only viable mode for an old Tekken player) I got bored, it's like I'm doing a job that I don't like, I was literally forcing myself to play the game, no fun at all.

To make it shorter, I'll put pros and cons.

    Pros:

-They added a feature allowing you to check your rank online.
-Good graphics for a 2017 game (could have been better, but it was good)
    -Very well optimized.
-Vs mode and friendly matches( offline ) are good, lobby vs mode can be good if you're close to each other online.
-Practice mode is very good (probably spent most of the time there doing exhibition combos)

    Cons:

-Flawed ranked system full of boosters ( using the local save file to reset rank and delete loses) no comment Bamco, No comment..
-(personal opinion) Making Street Fighter thingies (rage arts+2d games characters in Tekken is a big turn off to hardcore fans, it simply kills Tekken core and soul.
-Harada promised that all Tekken characters will be free ( I can't relate to that in Tekken 7! )
-Peer2peer online is a very terrible thing to do in a so called aaa game( make servers bamco !!!)
    -Lack of stages
-Lack of legacy characters( maybe they will bring some, but for money, that's so bad)
-Lack of modes( especially Tekken force mode, true tekken ball mode and battle mode)

I could write a book counting the cons but I'll stop there.

Frankly, I stopped playing Tekken 7, I'll just wait for Tekken 8, it's pretty sad that Tekken has become like this.

If you want to get the game, wait for a sale, I really don't recommend buying it for full price.

While the game is spectacular visually, and boasts fun mechanics and a diverse cast of characters, there's a lot to be desired.

DLC characters enjoy the lion's share of attention, with the last two characters, Leroy and Fahkumram, releasing incredibly strong and warranting immediate nerfs in the following patches. Combo damage has steadily crept up over the duration of the game's lifespan, and it's not uncommon for two losses in the neutral game to result in a round loss. The roster is enormous, offering 40+ characters, but the cast consists of three groups, the very strong characters, the average characters, and the very bad characters. The discrepancy between the three groups is significant, and it's rare for any character to exist in the space between.

The game's netcode leaves a lot to be desired. The connection indicator is reliable in one thing: giving the player an inaccurate measurement when the match is made, and then displaying 1-2 tiers below what was reported. Due to the unreliable nature of the game's primary method of playing, online matches, the delay-based netcode creates a lot of situations for the player where they simply cannot react to moves that would otherwise be able to be reacted to in an offline setting. It's very confusing how little effort appears to have been made to make the main part of the game enjoyable.

The ranked ladder is effectively meaningless, as your save (on PC) contains your rank, which allows players to back-up their save before every match, and reload it if they lose, to prevent ever ranking down. Smurfing is also a problem, where players delete their save deliberately to play against lower ranked players. Combined with the problems of netcode, ranked mode succeeds only in frustrating the player more frequently than not.

Despite all of that, when the game works and everything comes together, it is fantastic. Moves feel impactful and yet fluid, combos make sense and are visually appealing, and the music is exceptional. However, the balancing and netcode significantly draws away from this game which would otherwise be an 8 or 9.

No two ways about it – Tekken 7 is a success. Sure, it would be better if the campaign was longer, if it still had Fight Lab training mode and every single character that ever appeared in the series was playable; but still – base roster of 36 fighters, great performance and flawless combat mechanics make Tekken 7 more than worthy to be called an editor’s choice game.
