I'm a fan of TES 4, 5, and Fallout 3, 4, and this is the first time I got stuck in the middle of a main quest with the glitch and was completely unplayable.

The combat is generic and underwhelming, graphically it's not exactly ground breaking but will batter your hardware like it is and it has its fair share of game breaking bugs and crashing to the desktop so you need to save often. I see many giving this 10/10 which is ridiculous given the issues it has. Amazed how Bethesda seems to get a pass for putting out poorly optimised, unfinished and bug ridden games when every other publisher, rightly, gets dragged over the coals for it. Simply not good enough considering the time it spent in development. It's an OK game but the negatives far outweigh any positives. Expand

At times the game is gorgeous and at other times it looks very outdated. NPCs stare into your soul for no reason and over encumbrance is yet again and issue.

I'm willing to give it a 6 because the gun play is okay and the ship building is kind of fun. Overall I was very excited to play Starfield but in the end I mostly felt disappointed and irritated by my 18 hour experience.

For 20 years of development time of a company worth billions, which have as a goal to dominate the market, this is just an extremely bad joke. I can also in no way understand the 100 point ratings of some magazines. Since the game is already extremely bad. If Bethesda had rather put the money into the game than 90% into the PR, it could have been something.

First off...How is this supposed to be a space based adventure with your own spaceship, when you cant even fly the spaceships properly? We are unable to fly on and off, or even over the surface of the planets? Hell even the far lower budget indie developers 'No mans Sky' at least lets you land and take off from planets and fly around them! But Starfield's space exploration is a bit of a scam, a gimmick, a fake, a charade, a thin veneer, its pure snake oil sold to us by Todd Howard the snake oil salesman.
Starfield has no real space exploration at all, just one base/mine/space station per planet, with fast travel cutscenes and loading scenes masquerading as space travel, the whole space exploration element is all a giant let-down!. instead we get the same irritating repetitive over and over cutscenes of the landings and take-offs..and that's it! Awful!
Why even bother with the planets anyway if that's the best they could do with all the money they had and giant dev team? Its a joke, an insult to our intelligence and betrayal of what Todd Howard promised! They should of just kept it all on one planet, with different biomes and simply called it Planetfield! Whilst i enjoyed some of the planets in starfield, most are barren and continued nothing much to the game.

And why so many Cutscenes? they are everywhere, Take off your ship = animated cutscene,...land your ship = animated cutscene, Fly to the nearest planet = animated cutscene, get out of your space ship chair = animated cutscene, get out of your spaceship = black screen cutscene, get back in your ship = black screen cutscene, get back into your chair = animated cutscene cutscene, Walk through a door black screen cutscene, Everything is cutscenes! I half expected a nice trip on the monorail/metro, looking out of the windows as I travelled between districts, but no...all i got was..you guessed it another fast travel black screen Cutscene! Compare that to the awesome real monorail in Star citizen!
As for the planets, they may as well be non existent like ive said.., often just empty barren and nothing to do, with simplistic graphics, its a pointless waste of time even wanting to explore them!..there is nothing to explore! They are ultimately as fake as the games title. Fast travel to a planet you are presented with a few options, land on the designated area with the base, city, mine etc, or land on the planet somewhere miles away and be presented with zero options other than to mine pointless materials. So in effect each planet is just a staging post/backdrop for the missions. No exploration at all.
Procedurally generated worlds can be boring and repetitive, even when done well. They need Procedurally generated bases, cities, missions etc. Now that would of been cool.
No HDR options or even basic gamma or brightness options, so for me at least many of the interiors ended up looking very bright, foggy and often felt like I was in a smoke filled night club in most of the interior spaces! But thankfully the modding community was soon able to offer fixes for this on day one of official release! BUT Why should it be left up to the modders to sort these blaring issues out on day one of release?
I've also added a custom ini to increase the field of view to 90, instead of the restrictive default of 70. As for the cities in the game, they are cartoon looking, low textured, like New Atlantis, which is a very basic, cartoon looking, small city with a scattering of useless NPC's walking or sitting around, and whats with the odd looking fake trees, and rubbish pools of fake looking water with cartoon water lily's in? As for all the cafe's, and shops, they are just empty facades with no real life in them.
Missions are often ridiculous and boring.
ive given it a 7..due to the effort put into some of the bases and ideas. It could of been a 10 if they kept to their promises. Its a real shame because you can see a lot of effort HAS gone into certain parts of the game.
If Todd Howard was a used car salesman, he would walk you around an amazing Ferrari at his car showroom, waffle off all the great specs to get your interest level up, then quickly get you to sign the paper work for the expensive purchase, then when you are walked to the handover room, you would be given an old clapped out pickup truck with a Ferrari badge 'sticky taped' to the bonnet!

When we usually hear the term "Getting Moar for Less", we usually imagine a product whose value outpaces its price. But when that product becomes a Bethesda game named Starfield, you can be guaranteed the consumer will be paying more and getting less compared to other AAA games of this genre.

Starfield is not a good game, not because it isn't an update or an improvement on Bethesda's production process. It would be a lie or a misrepresentation for me to say that Bethesda has not upgraded the visuals as well as the quality of the game. I haven't had any bugs, crashes, or anything to undermine Bethesda on the data integrity of Starfield. The visual aesthetics are sometimes breathtaking and sometimes sterile, but that is the stylization of the game not a shortcoming of the game's refinement.

No, where Starfield completely falls off the rails, is when the game is running and you the player actually pay attention to the presentation formulated in front of you. Starfield is a 2005 game created with all the technology and graphical fidelity of a contemporary title. This wouldn't be a problem if Bethesda Softworks created timeless classics worth revisiting, but they don't. Bethesda's stories, how they are told, and what is depicted are all middling, milquetoast and tame.

Let me give an example, let's judge how Bethesda goes about interaction between characters to progress the story and create immersion between player and their companions. Not to name names, but a better game company allows companions to banter between themselves allowing you; the voiceless protagonist to listen in on a conversation that defines key characteristics about your companions as well as keeps you immersed in your travels between objectives. Bethesda on the other hand has you pull anybody you want to know about aside and commence a flurry of inquiries you must choose from. Your responses feel less spontaneous or thought-provoking, and more robotic and interrogating. You are asking query after query as your companion cycles through each one like a bad chat GPT. If you don't interact with that companion you will never hear from them. This relationship is a one-way street, or more like a semantic cul de sac. You spit out a random question at any random time, it cycles around generic answers till you ask everything possible on the presented screen. Conversations with your crew are as organic as polyurethane.

With interactions so robotic they could make the Terminator blush, you would think the combat in the game would be the saving grace for Bethesda's would be cosmic opus. Well don't hold your breath, the combat in Starfield is mindnumbling bland. It is so bland that it should count as a blemish against Bethesda because they refuse to put real time and effort into making it better. Weight, sound, impact, Bethesda was really focused on making a space sim because none of those things seem to have any value in Starfield's combat. The banal spongy lifeless AI, paired with your dull uninspired guns, that look interesting but handle like dead wood, beckon you to turn the game off and do anything else to feel life. The lifelessness of Starfield's combat must be an homage to the dark void that is space because no professional Video game company should be proud of this presentation.

Last but certainly not least, we must talk about the scope of this world. This isn't a space game, this is a Bethesda game about Space. This game wasn't built around you exploring the unknown. This game wasn't about using the technology and advances of space-age mankind. This game is about taking the cues, beats, and gimmicks Bethesda has used before and recycling them again. Space is just a complex loading screen, your quest takes you to an assortment of vaults, and the cities are just populated settlements. Fallout 76 was their test realm, Starfield is the 1.0 release.

Usually, creating a subpar product whether objective or subjective in critique was something we as a gaming community ignored. But Microsoft, Bethesda's parent company saw fit to raise the price of Starfield to 70 dollars. Starfield for 70 dollars is a travesty. The sad fact is I think MS knows that Starfield is a poor representation of a next-generation product, and I think cynically this mediocre offering was purposely presented to bolster the player base of the game pass. Either way, Starfield can't be suffered as an actual Space exploration game.

In closing; Starfield is a claustrophobic, cramp, mundane experience, with feeble combat, wooden narrative, and anemic immersion. To play Starfield and to laud it with praise is to validate Bethesda for being a great game company because they say so, not because they earn it. If gamers start to put up with this quality of game design the floors the limit for the future.

Bethesda being Bethesda, making the most disappointing game of the year. Full of jank and chores, no soul and no depth. Better avoid this one (look into No mans Sky for space exploration done right, or Baldurs Gate for an RPG done right).

Your companions are so dumb they are shooting the walls while shooting at the enemy. Then the graphics. The textures are good on characters imho but the lack of shading of shadows especially in the first planet it's just non existent it's really looking bad for a game that runs like a potato on an I7-13700k, Rtx3080, Ddr4 32gb 3200mhz. Unconventional to the likes of previous titles like Skyrim and Fallout 3, there isn’t a famous “step out moment” but rather a slow crescendo into what ends up being one of the deepest narrative driven experiences I’ve had in years. There are so many moments that have you feeling like you are playing four or five games in one.

Starfield is an epic adventure that is worth savoring and is best described as a slow cooked meal- it is the slow cooked meals that are most satisfying.

Here you can spend hours building your ship, hours crafting and arranging furniture in your home, hours mining resources and exploring planets, trading, transporting contraband, fighting on ships, stealing things, hiring companions, improving guns and spacesuits, cooking, helping random passersby, play your role and receive dissatisfaction or approval from others, complete quests in different ways. You can do literally anything!
I started the game late in the evening and it didn’t let me go until the morning, you really feel the atmosphere of space here, and the side quests are like small stories inside this world. After the first story quest, I came across some completely random additional quest and this line of quests told me the whole story of the conspiracy and took me 6-8 hours to complete it, and then it became more and more interesting to play. It was really fun, I don't understand why some people think the game is boring. It's definitely not a game for everyone, but it's a good, worthwhile game in the classic Bethesda style.
The game had every chance to become a hit and personally my favorite for many years, if not for one thing, the optimization here is truly terrible. The picture is nice and beautiful, but I would like to have 1080p 60 fps on my RTX 4060, and not ~30-45 :D I could only start playing comfortably at 60-80 frames with a DLSS mod. It’s very sad that the optimization was taken care of by enthusiasts and not by Bethesda.

I've seen a lot of hate towards this game with complaints like "flying in this game is not like in space simulators", "In this game you can't manually land like in "No man's sky", "In this game shooting is not like in doom" etc. that is, claims that in a huge RPG game its individual elements are not at the same level as in the best highly specialized games, where in fact there is practically nothing else besides these mechanics.
Another common complaint I heard was "The game world is empty procedurally generated garbage". Seriously? Does this really need to be explained? For 5-6 years, any development team can physically work out a map (so that it is filled with interesting activities per square meter) approximately the size of Skyrim or Fallout 4 - this is 9-15 square kilometers, since people's time and forces are not unlimited. In Starfield, we don’t have a single map like in Skyrim or F4, but there are planets, it turns out that a conditional map of 15 square kilometers is divided into zones, these zones are separate well-designed planets, it’s easy to count them in the game, it won’t be so a lot of.
Everything else (1000 planets) is just an entourage with procedural generation and the illusion of an infinite space, so that there is no dissonance like in the same Mass Effects, where there were conditional 4-5 planets (just the same ordinary limited locations) and that's it, nowhere else even theoretically you can't fly.
So did anyone seriously expect the game will have 1,000 hand-crafted planets?
Do I need to say that all these claims look absolutely stupid and childish? People came up with a dream game that no one promised them - A huge RPG with 1000 hand-crafted planets, Star Citizen, No Man's Sky and DOOM in one bottle, and when they didn't get it, they accused the developers of lying and labeled the game as a failure ... probably forgetting that only Star Citizen (in which, by the way, there is practically nothing else besides good space flights and resource collection) has been developed for 13 years and has not yet been released ... That's the essence of the absurdity - people demanded that Bethesda make a dream game in 6 years, which actually takes 5000 years to develop...
Returning to the game itself, I can safely say that this is the most ambitious and incredible project from Bethesda, in which almost all aspects and mechanics have been improved compared to their previous games, which in turn were masterpieces and improved radically - graphics, lighting, animations, physics and facial animations - all of this has been taken to a whole new level. The style of the game, all those dashboards, computers, buttons and switches, is pure ecstasy for fans of science fiction. And this is only talking about the visual part, and in addition to this, you will also find a huge RPG game with exciting quests and many additional mechanics, such as building your own ships and outposts. This game is very meditative, unhurried, in which a huge emphasis is placed on immersion and getting aesthetic pleasure from the very stay in this world, and if you like games like RDR 2 or Death Stranding, you will definitely like Starfield, although they are different in genre games, but in spirit they are very close.
Starfield is an amazing game, the best Bethesda game so far and yes it's not perfect, but show me the perfect game without flaws, the answer is simple, games like this just don't exist in our world.

Let me start with what I like.

Graphics looks pretty darn good, by and large. There’s some weird anomalies like the wide eyed stare, and there are visual glitches. Some planets look a bit weak but those total 5% of what I’ve seen. The other 95% looks great - textures and models of all the gear, the human built environments, all beautiful.

Voice acting is usually ok. There’s a lot of cartoony over the top voices that sound like sarcasm. Music is beautiful. It all loads pretty fast on my Series S, thank goodness because of the many loading screens. I don’t think I’m out of the first act of the main story but I’m following along, enough - it’s fine!

Already from my positives though you can see it’s not blown me away really.

    The bad:

The games mechanics are confusing, it is taking me forever to understand how I store, trade, keep, upgrade, etc all the gear. Hard to understand menu navigation when traveling, hard to understand how to survey planets (I spent 2 hours on my first planet going in circles until I regretfully looked up help online. There are annoying enemy bugs where they clip through walls; they get me but I can’t get them. They blend into the environment too much; the areas colors are usually just 2-3 main similar colors, and muted and muddy. Many times I can’t see the enemy because they wear those same colors plus all the smoke hides everyone.

I hate getting around. We are given an entire universe, but no great way to traverse it. Menu systems for ship travel are complex, confusing, and convoluted. Opening up a menu, selecting a planet, traveling, getting to the planet, but not actually landing on it, opening the menu, again, selecting an area on the planet, traveling again, watching the cut scene of the ship landing… terrible. Sometimes the planet needs to scan you for contraband, other times, not. Sometimes you can leave directly from being docked, other times you have to undock yourself. When you’re on the planet, you can’t run for long without running out of oxygen, that can run out even faster if you’re over encumbered, and when you’re over encumbered, you can’t fast travel. There are no vehicles. And you are running around these empty planets with nothing really interesting to do or look at as you make your way to the one area to get an artifact, or special ability or resource/trait. You can fast travel back to your ship… but only if you aren’t encumbered.

Characters talk over each other all the time. The gunplay has been a struggle. Aiming either feels like I am pulling the cursor through syrup or it has a booster engine and shoots my crosshair across the screen if I barely touch it. I’ve tried so many aim sensitivity settings but I think I am making small improvements only because I am learning to work within these confines. I have yet to find much ammo for one of the guns I really want to use.

Speaking of guns - what the actual EFF is with the lack of automatic ammo pick up? To get ammo for your gun, you have to pick up a gun that uses the same ammo. The ammo will automatically show up on your HUD but now you have to do something with the gun. With such limited inventory, I am dropping the guns all the time, and it really slows down the momentum of the game. . After spending 15 minutes walking in a slow straight line across a boring empty planet, when I finally find enemies to shoot, I don’t want to spend most of that time opening my menu to drop guns. Even a game considered one of the most realistic, RDR2, allows you to just walk near an enemy and the ammo is automatically picked up.

There is some good, but at this point there isn’t enough good to make me want to leave the main story again. At the moment, it’s entertaining enough that I will continue the main story for now, but I have a lot of other games I want to get to and star field has felt more like it’s stealing my time more than me enjoying my time with it.

It's leaned too heavily into things Bethesda ISN'T known for (base building/resource gathering) and forgotten the roots that Bethesda IS loved for. Exploration and a sense of an expansive world to get side tracked in while on another mission. The gunplay and weapon variety is a nice step forward, but even then nothing that other games don't do much better.

Swirled together in a toilet to water down every element that made those games special. They did add some game-breaking new {{features}} err, bugs along with pages on pages of unfilterable menus to wade through compressed in a UI that looks like an Alpha build mock up. Anything another game can do in 2 clicks, this one will make you page through to do nearly everything - travel, manage inventory, assign crew, etc. This is not a game that can be redeemed with mods - there are fundamental flaws in game design, balance, performance and QA testing that make this a burden to play.

They also managed to make a far worse ending than Mass Effect 3, taking away all player choice and agency. A boring, anti-climatic denouement that feels meaningless and devoid of meaning or substance.

If you played Bethesda games for a bit, you'd know for sure what to expect from Starfield. Even if there is word "space" in advertisement, you would never draw a parallel with any space simulation game. It's not a space simulation game. And it was never called so. It barely even looked like it in visual trailers.

But on the other hand, what they should've said? "We have some space, but what most important is the amount of good quests and dialogues, awesome narrative, great open world and thousands possibilities!" Everyone already heard that. And everyone already played it. Played it in all the Fallout and all the Elder Scrolls games.

Yeah, probably they should've said that narrative in this game is better than it ever was. Yeah, probably they should've said that side quests are just as great as always and the giant world is unchained as it never was. NPCs in the cities talk about real things, when they say something it means something.

The only bug I saw during playthrough is a cabinet drawer physically stuck in itself. Did you see amount of items their physical engine is capable of handling without any stutter? That's insane progress on the engine. Also I think they should've introduced the complete modding capabilities right at the launch and even advertise them, show something. Everyone know it's a strongest part of Bethesda game. That's a great miss.

In conclusion, the game will be played a lot and widely. Modding will be insane, every now and then I see potential to mod something. I do not see continuation of this franchise though and that's a bit concerning.

He promised exploration which is minimal. It's a space game without "space". They called it an RPG without dialogues with a role-play system.

Incredibly overrated, by no means GOTY material, cannot understand all of these 10/10 reviews
I expected so much more for how long we waited.

Let me start by saying that I love Bethesda games. Fallout 3 is one of my all time favorites, as is Skyrim. I liked Fallout 4 and I even like and defend Fallout 76, so I am definitely not anti Bethesda.

I've played for around 40 hours now and finished the main quest, so I believe I am at a point where I can say I'm well acquainted with the game.
    * The fast travel is needlessly complicated, so many loading screens, so much to do, just to get from point A to point B.

    * There are plenty of bugs. People online saying it doesn't have bugs are lying. This game has been far more buggy to me than Skyrim.

    * The graphics are nothing special and I am playing on a year old Alienware PC. My settings are ultra high def.
The graphics are inferior compared to Cyberpunk or Witcher 3.

    * The quests and NPCs so far have all been completely non memorable. Nothing has tugged at my emotions. No moral dilemmas. Go fetch this, go get that. I am so incredibly underwhelmed by the quests and NPCs.

    * The NPCs all have bulging eyes. Like all of them. It really ruins immersion because how weird they all look.

    * There is no atmospheric story telling in this game and I think that is what is truly bothering me most. You know how in the Fallouts you constantly find scenes or skeletons or unmarked locations that tell you a story without telling you a story? I have seen none of that in this game, anywhere, like not even one instance. So many abandoned buildings you cannot access. Nothing on the roofs. They didn't even write books for this game, like in the Elder Scrolls. Every book you find is public domain like Moby Dck etc. I have yet to find any notes or computer entries that offer lore or just atmosphere, everything you find is quest essential. The planets really are truly barren. Like on Earth, you can find the remains of the St. Louis Arch and a few other landmarks but literally everything else is sand. Really? Really???No roads or anything left of New York or.....nothing? But the arch is still standing.

    * It has been clear since Fallout 4 that Bethesda is trying to tone down mature content to make their games playable to a more wide age range. While mature content is NOT mandatory for a good game, they need to understand that their target audience for games like this is still, and always will be, adults. You don't have to make it rated R, but PG13 is a good balance. There is so little violence, gore, adult themes, language in this game, that I could easily let my 6 year old play it, but he'd be bored out of his mind with all the loading screens. What they captured in Fallout 3, in terms of maturity, was PERFECT. You didn't have nudity. The cursing wasn't excessive. It was very well balanced. I implore them to return to making adult games for adults.

***My next complaint, I think Bethesda was really trying to do a good thing, I do, but this is not how to do it. I think they had the best intentions and were trying to be more inclusive.
I do not understand why female bodies and female faces and female haircuts are pretty much non existent in this game. As someone who identifies as female, I feel this is a bit misogynistic. I do not feel this is inclusive regarding my gender identity. My character is flat chested with no curves and cannot be given female features, and this applies to all other female characters in the game. I wish I could attach pictures of my character, it's sad. I think they were going for non binary or androgynous, which it's wonderful they are trying to include our LGTBQ+ friends in your games. Our non binary friends deserve to be included! But consider our loved ones who are trans and going through transition from M to F. They already have body dysmorphia and this game is a great opportunity for them to role play in the body they want----a female body---only to see that they cannot have breasts or curves. I URGE Bethesda to consider going back to the body types used in Fallout 4/Skyrim, and to be inclusive for all body types and genders. Allow players to be more masculine or more feminine. I am currently waiting for mods so that I can make a character body that identifies with my gender identity.

I know you cannot please everyone. I know that programming and creating a game is incredibly hard work and that their team put in countless hours, sweat, tears, and lost sleep.

I encourage Bethesda to please read through these reviews and try to address what you can. The game is still new and there is plenty of time to win over the community.

For a game in which you think you'd be able to do space exploration, there is ZERO of it. There is no enjoyment in travelling to a planet like a simulator as you just fast jump to that planet.
Take away all the cutscenes and dialogue scnes and you are left with very little gameplay.
If you are thinking of buying the game, i suggest watching walkthroughs first and seeing just how utterly boring this game is.

Let me start by saying that I feel like I was cheated out of my hard earned money, not because of the gameplay, but because of how much they are forcing their one sided opinions on people. Nowhere does Bethesda warn you about just how one sided / woke they made this game. Nowhere does Bethesda warn you about just how one sided / woke they made this game. I have over 90 hours in this game so I feel like I have a good perspective of what Starfield brings to the table. Here's a summary:

    1. Almost every important NPC from most store owners, military generals / commanders, the leader of Constellation, the supervisor leading the mining expedition at the start of the game, and even the president of the United Colonies, are all women. When it comes to a position of power or leadership, females very obviously and deliberately dominate every sector. The only time that a white male character is in a position of real leadership, is the leader of the Crimson Fleet, one of the main villains of the game. It's very obvious the developers hate white males, as they are a huge minority. 2. You can tell just how "diverse" the developers are by looking at the random civilians and guards in every city. In 90 hours of gameplay, Most of the guards / soldiers have been either black males or females ( of all races ), and females do dominate the soldiers / guards as well. The civilians consist of both genders, but almost exclusively Black or Asian. It's very rare to find white males anywhere in any cities, and the only places I usually find them is either in the ghetto of every city, or working the mines. With the way the world is going today, this maybe seems like a not too distant reality anyway. 3. If you are religious and believe in God, you will be very disappointed here. This game actively tries to find some sort of "scientific facts" to persuade people into thinking God isn't real. None of the main companions believe in God, and the only one that comes close believes in the "great serpent", in which that religion is viewed as a cult by almost every NPC. 4. When you create your character, you can choose your "body type" and "walk type" between Male or Female, and then you get the privilege to choose your pronouns. You can either be a He, a She, or a They. This one I am not as bothered by as this only revolves around your personal character. You can be a straight male if you want ( Although every romance companion is Bi ). The problem I have with the pronouns is that the Left all say "pronouns are no big deal" but when someone creates a mod to remove pronouns in the character creation for people who don't want to participate in that either due to religion or another reason, are attacked by the Left for their personal preferences. Very hypocritical and selfish of them to force everyone to share their views or get attacked, even though "It's not a big deal". If someone is going to be paying all that money for a game, they should have the freedom to play it how they want personally.

    5. There is a Transgender main character in the game ( part of one of the main side questlines ), but they try to be a little more cautious about the wording on this in the game by calling them a clone. You are pretty much forced to support this character throughout the questline even if you have different beliefs. Overall, the choice to purchase this game is entirely up to you. If you are into everything I mentioned earlier, this game is absolutely for you. But for those that share different beliefs and views, I would highly recommend avoiding the game until they either make it more diverse without the white male oppression, or a mod fixes it. They deliberately hid this aspect of the game until people purchased it and played enough to the point of no longer able to get a refund, and that was the wrong approach from Bethesda. Why can't we have a modern game where people can express themselves without being forced to a single ideology that they might not agree on? In my opinion, this game has to be one of the most racist / sexist games against White males that I have ever played. The gameplay itself is very fun ( other than the limits on exploration ) and there is a lot to do in terms of side activities, base / ship building, combat, etc. So it's not all bad. It all depends on your own personal views. Would it have been great for them to support both sides? Absolutely, but unfortunately that's not how the world is going. For me personally, this game is a 0/10 as the world building is immersion breaking.

The inventory and skills menu is very easy and simple to use. The map is complex and takes time to get used to. Optimization isn't good, the engine doesn't make things fluid as it should. The indoors and landscapes of the planets are beautiful, but the NPCs are ugly (except named characters). The game deserves 9 because it is not easy to create such a vast and rich universe. Brain side: I completely agree with all the negative reviews (yes, before writing this text, it was interesting for me to read why the game is criticized by the “red” ratings, and why the game is still praised by the “green” ratings)... The side of feelings: you know... I'm catastrophically tired and angry about what's happening with the gaming industry in recent years. I'm tired of making jokes like "to hell with it, we have an indie industry." I'm tired of the fact that many gamers forgive and even !praise! such products, motivating creators to make further pseudo-games like this one. If earlier there were a lot of big games from big companies that were interesting to play, then in recent years I’ve been increasingly thinking that I’m not interested in spending the full price tag on some kind of garbage in a beautiful wrapper. And thank you if this wrapper is really beautiful and is not stuffed with a million bugs.
I am tired to be angry to see "a big game industry" in such a mess in 2023 because of so-calling effective managers. Because it so happens that in the modern World big games are made not by those who like to create games, but by those who simply want to suck as much money out of you as possible. And the most disgusting thing is that they don’t give anything for it except false promises and no less false apologies. I'm so tired of all this that EVERY! similar pseudo-games in future will receive no more than 3 points from me (graphics, music, idea). I'm over it.

Bethesda's long awaited new universe is a polarizing marvel. It fails in places very important to some and insignificant to others.

The engine which powers Bethesda games provides many technical limitations, but it is also the source of Bethesda's immense ability to create living persistent worlds. Your enjoyment of Starfield is reliant on which you prioritize.

Unfortunately, those technical limitations, cracks in the experience, which in past titles were so easily airbrushed away, are now as wide and deep as canyons. They are glaring indictments of Bethesda's inability to move engines. Bethesda has so much time and effort invested in their jalopy of an engine it would mean a disastrous loss of productivity to switch at this point.

That being said, the design choices that hurt the most seem informed by technical limitation. I do not understand for the life of me why in-menu fast-travel is so prominent in a game centered around space ships. I understand the need to remove the void of travel to provide a tighter narrative experience, but space sims have had warp drives since the 80s, Starfield has warp (grav) drives. That, IS your fast travel system. Menu travel makes a universe of 100s of planets feel as small as Skyrim.

Bethesda's RPGs have historically had terrible menus so it stands to reason that the their games feel the best when you are out of them for long stretches. Unfortunately, Starfield is their most menu heavy game to date. Half the game is played in menus. I understand that releasing on consoles creates limitations, such as requiring annoying lists of equipment, but why, when playing on a keyboard, are the keys that have similar functions different depending on what I'm doing? Its an unintuitive and frustrating mess.

Starfield excels at many things. The scope of the content is massive. Its easy to b-line it through the main storyline and treat the other quests as "side-quests", but they are anything but. These are fully voice acted narratives that take you around the galaxy and feel like Starfield launched with built in DLC. The writing is rough in areas, but never outwrite bad and the characters are complex and deep.

Ship building is well implemented, not being too restrictive or complex, while still feeling like there is some engineering complexity to conquer. It would have been great if exotic ship part blueprints were found as loot or just more parts in general, but the feature is a highlight, regardless.

Combat is, what you would expect from an RPG shooter. Bullet sponge slogs or insignificant short scuffles. Rarely can they find the sweet spot. The savior here is the weapon design, which are both pleasing and interesting. The AI does an admirable job while in combat, but falls back on decades old design of AI "Amnesia". Stay hidden for long enough, and they will go about their day, like you didn't just murder half of them 30 seconds ago.

In many ways Bethesda RPGs are platforms on which to build your own experience; playing how you want, modding how you please, changing what you don't like, and adding more of that which you do. The promise of community improvements and content goes a long way with some, and means little to others.

Its easy to fault Starfield. The Bethesda formula and trademark Bethesda jank are getting stale. The limitation of the technology are on full display. The content is deep in odd places and shallow where it often counts the most. Starfield is the best Bethesda RPG since Morrowind, but games are in a different place. Bethesda's inability to grow in the right direction, means Starfield falls short of reaching the stars.

It tells you what you need to do to be a good person, and what you can't do if you want to be a good person. What you need to do to be accepted in society and what's going to get you cancelled. It wants to control every aspect of who you are and how you present yourself to the world, and it's all supported and enforced by the establishment.

People who identify as "woke" have a rigid parochial set of values and beliefs that they've ignorantly mistaken for objective truth. A system of values that they believe are fundamentally good and morally righteous. A set of values that they're convinced are undeniably correct and necessary to human happiness. A set of values they're so committed to that they've adopted a militant and grossly intolerant attitude towards anyone who happens to have different values or anyone who happens to believe things other than what they themselves have mistaken for objective truth.

The existence of people who don't share their values makes them so furious that they've convinced themselves that these are bad people who need to be shut down and punished through a deeply malicious combination of lies and intimidation they've attempted to impose their personal values on everyone, smearing anyone who says something they disagree with as sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic and any number of other "ist's" and "ic's".

Through doing this they've destroyed many people's lives and brought us all cultural impoverishment and social decline. Moreover through a rabid commitment to an entirely irrational gender ideology which they've convinced themselves is morally righteous they've allowed predatory men to encroach upon women's spaces all around the world and openly engage in child grooming in public.

They champion diversity but they don't like diversity of ideas. They champion Liberty, but they don't like freedom of speech. They preach about social justice on a phone made by a child slave. They use the expression "Words have consequences" entirely oblivious to how Fascistic that sounds. In short they're hypocrites of the highest order. They are all of those things they claimed to hate the most. Bigots, Authoritarians and Bullies.

The writing is boring. The characters are boring. The quests are boring. The powers are boring. The items are boring. The combat is sometimes alright but quickly gets boring. Boring, bland, soulless and devoid of any fun. Truly a game to not waste ones money on. I reached breaking point after 5 hours and uninstalled. What a joke, all these years and you get a fake space backdrop exploration aka loading screen fast travel nonsense.

There's a lot of flaws in space in Starfield. But that does not prevent me from exploring our galaxy again and again.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
