No MMORPG since EQ have I felt so enthrilled to play, like what I was doing really mattered; matching in the same way that Everquest felt like I was really exploring this world that nobody else could experience in the same way I could. - This is the perfect new age MMORPG and transition for the MMO Market. I believe BioWare is one of the FINEST developers in the business, and for the debut MMO from the amazing RPG developer, they really knock the ball out of the park with a 10/10 grandslam.. What is there to complain about? The story-arch as an Imperial Agent choosing Operative at Level 10 has been amazing thus far, and love making my dark-side choices; I PVP endlessly and Space Combat is a "Blast". It's the perfect Star Wars game, and arguably the perfect MMORPG.

ToR stands against for the entire lore and setting of my favourite RPGs, but that's just the tip of the mountain. The game is ugly, has stiff animations, the graphics are a joke. Glitches and bugs are a daily basis, the customer support doesn't know what the hell it's doing. Combat and gameplay in general would be funny if it weren't so sad. The typical WoW-like (another dissapointment in a once good company, by the way) "stand still while waving your weapon at a giant single enemy along other 20 "chosen ones" " situation is just too common. The voice acting is TERRIBLE, why people actually list it as the best aspect is beyond me! Monotonous, out-of-character robots, EVERYWHERE. I actually saw a video where the voice actress for the same character changed twice, MID SENTENCE. Top notch quality voice acting, that.
The whole desperate focus on the RPG elements turns the game into some morbid hybrid, that can only be descripted as "singleplayer RPG with MMO elements". The endgame is simply non-existant, and it takes 2-3 days to reach it. No, PvP doesn't count, because it's an unbalanced clusterf**k. And don't even get me started on huttball...Sith and Jedi playing SPORTS. Yaaay...which gets me to another point: stupidity. CRUSHING lighsabers. DARK heal. SITH getting light points. That's just flat out retarded.
And the last, but not least is the price for this. Too much. Too high. Alot of people will point out, that WoW is similar in this aspect, but does comparing to WoW really do much good for the game?

The fact that each character class has its own deep story from level 1 to 50 gives the game PLENTY of playtime until an expansion or add on comes out, and that's not including the competition driven PVP!! The game has some bugs but need I remind of the plagues that infested WoW vanilla and tbc?? The game's interface and play style are similar to WoW which makes it easy for Azeroth vets like myself to dive head first into the game without issues. I don't consider myself a "Star Wars fan" but this game has captured my attention like no other has in the past. Same could be said for my entire 80+ person WoW guild, 3/4 of the guild is now faithfully playing SWTOR and has permanently cancelled their WoW subscriptions!! Well done Bioware! Expand

As with many long-in-development games, it has a terrific amount of polish and plays quite smoothly, but it also feels very specifically engineered to be marketable to a certain market segment: players of World of Warcraft. That is a bit unfair, of course. The truth is that it is two games in one, which is why I don't completely understand the reviews that insist upon giving TOR a "0." One of these games is a slightly slimmed down but generally entertaining third part to the generally well-received Knights of the Old Republic single player games. There are eight reasonably well developed, interesting and thoughtful single player plotlines in TOR to follow with a good bit of foresight, occasional difficulty and all too rare instances of player choice. These alone make this game worthwhile for a good group of Star Wars fans, if not the miracle that everyone was hoping for. The MMO components feel, rather unfortunately, tacked on to the single player component in an unwieldy way. Combat gameplay is simplistic and lacks any inventive mechanics. Player skill as a deciding factor in either difficult PvE or PvP interaction is minimal. Numbers and equipment are back to being the absolute dominating factor. The cartoony graphics, the repackaged magic skills and the marginal class differences between factions make the MMO component of this game feel like little more than World of Warcraft with Lightsabers. Your character will likely not feel different from anyone else's like it would have in EQ. You will likely not become attached to a particular part of the world, a particular city like in SWG. You will not likely feel any faction pride like you would have in DAOC. The strong opinions here give testament to that. Those who enjoy the simple, waypoints-for-everything, slick presentation, easy to step into game with very little differentiation like WoW will likely love this as a bit of change of pace. Those who were hoping for a genre-changer, a game that would take Star Wars Galaxies and expand it, fix its broken mechanics but keep the open feel, the control over the world and the broad fear of exploration that was what made MMOs popular in the first place (EQ)...well, those people are very disappointed indeed. It is average, but that's just the midpoint. If you love WoW and lightsabers, you will adore this game. If you liked KOTOR and aren't expecting anything grandiose here, you'll find it an adequate use of a couple weekends and a worthy purchase. If you were expecting the Next Great Game, you will abhor everything about it. Expand

I saw one idiot (Thorn14) saying that the PvP warzone huttball should be a blank canvas but isnt due to the air jets in the middle area of the warzone. Hey, buddy, the person can be shot in the totally wrong direction too!! Go figure that....
Bunch of WoW fanboys are also complaining about the graphics of the game (MagusGrandios, especially.) Hey, genius-boys, the dev, BioWare MADE IT THAT WAY FOR A REASON. That was so that it didnt require you going out and spending $$$ on new computers or hardware in general to be able to run it! Fools!
A bunch of WoW fanboys are **** and moaning about this being a 'carbon copy of World of Warcraft' (too many to name) This is a typical fanboy response when their game is threatened by a product heads and tails BETTER than their game. Pay them no heed. this game is virtually NOTHING like WoW, and I know because I've played it, too.

Those are just a few of the trollers. now that some of them are dealt with, Let me tell you from a true perspective (and yes, I have played MMORPG's for years) that the only major issue I have with SW:TOR is the fact that the republic doesnt have more interesting aliens to play. For all the fanboys of WoW again pissing and moaning their collective heads off about the Empire not having multiple races... THEY'RE THE EMPIRE!! THEY'RE A XENOPHOBIC SOCIETY THAT WOULDN'T LET THE ALIENS INTO ANY PART OF SOCIETY THAT MEANT A DAMN! WANNA PLAY A MMORPG WHERE YOU'RE A SLAVE?? DIDNT THINK SO!! Sorry, it just irks the hell outta me when I see obvious trolls trolling something so epic as SW:TOR. And let there be trolls to this post. It just proves my point.

Despite that slight issue, the graphics are workable on almost every system someone could have. (PC system obviously) The worlds are really well worked, with random convo's and people walking around giving it almost a feeling of past, present, and future in and about the main areas. The crafting was another stroke of genius. I played games where crafting was tedious boring work. BW made it so I can go on questing doing whatever I pleased and have my minions do the gathering, and crafting for me. Then when I have the item, I can choose to reverse engineer it to attempt to learn a better way to make the same item. Great work, BW. I am extremely pleased. In closing, BioWare came through strong with SW:TOR. As I said, trolls will try to do their best to troll a game that threatens theirs. But in all honesty, this is a game that you'd be crazy not to check out, especially if you're an MMORPG fan, as I am. Hope this review cleared up some of the trolls idiotic spewing. (now I need to get my brain bleached to try to get some of the retarded bile that they wrote out of my head)

End game pvp consists of fighting low level players in warzones. It is completely unchallenging for the level 50s and impossibly frustrating for level 10 - 40s. There are no level brackets. The system is an absolute joke.

PvP gets a score of 2 out of 10.

    The questing gets an 8/10

Well... It's World of Warcraft, that's for sure. But I think even then, there are things that The Old Republic tried to do WoW-style but didn't quite make it. World PvP made WoW really good, and the death of world PvP in WoW kind of killed it for me entirely. But here in TOR, it's dead right from the get-go, which was a major let down. Plus, I think the most meaningless parts of WoW's endgame were kind of copied and pasted right into TOR, which also kind of ruined it for me.
I thought the storyline was pretty weak, and then towards the end the story just kind of... dies off instantly, never to return. Personally I don't think trying to include story in an MMO is a good idea, and this game might justify that idea. The story feels more meaningless to me when it tries to "connect" with me, because every other single player in the game has had the exact same experiences. I am not a legendary Jedi who holds the fate of the galaxy in my hands, me and the other 50,000 players all are. I'm not really going to discuss the canon of the story, because I think it is Bioware's choice if they want to pretend KotOR 2 didn't exist. It was a good game, but I can accept it being non-canon. A lot of people were mad at Revan's place in TOR's story (don't worry I won't spoil), and rightfully so. It was a major disappointment, I wish it was handled differently.
The thing that really made me stop playing was THAT LAG, MAN. I just can't take it anymore. To have everything I do be delayed by almost half a second is frustrating, and to have it happen consistently is maddening. Of course, that is more of a server thing than the game itself, and perhaps in the future the servers will be upgraded, so this might end up being irrelevant.

BOREDOM. This is a feeling that trumps all the talk about the good points of the game. If there's one thing that Bioware does well, it's the story writing and dialogue. In such a huge game as TOR is, there are bound to be the highs and lows in everything but in ensemble the whole of the writing is a solid A and another solid A for voice acting. I see why people would enjoy this game especially during the initial levels when the skills come fast, the quest chain quickly and the main storyline is developing at a frenetic pace. And then there are the 20-s and the 30-s, the levels (out of 50 by the way) when things tend to slow down in MMORPGs and when my love for this game vanished and the veil was torn off my face. This is the time when you start to really loathe the fact that the gameplay mechanics are duplicating those from World of Warcraft (and there can be no discussion on this front) and even more so, there's no improvement whatsoever over them in any way. This is more than playing it safe, this is blatant copying. I guess there's no patent for gameplay mechanics but running the fetch quests and kill the mobs quests was the trademark of vanilla WoW and this game cannot be compared to vanilla WoW. The market just doesn't work like that. Sure the original World of Warcraft had just one raid and several instances and bugs, but at the same time everyone seems to forget that it was innovative in so many areas. It had quite a quick leveling structure , accessible mechanics, and it was streamlined for mass market. Never before crafting, questing, dungeon-running was so simple and attractive. TOR 2011 is neither more accessible, neither more innovative and neither more fun than any other game on this market. There's a lot to be said for main storyline and "gripping" fully-voiced quests. Unfortunatlely, from my point of view, those are not an essential element of the game. I had no problem with reading quest plots before, and fully voiced quest givers while cool initially started to wear out their welcome also towards level 20. As of now things work like this: there's a quest hub with around 5 (more or less) quest-givers. You spend half an hour just talking to them all and then you get 5 generic quests in your log all for the same zone and unless you're particularly invested in the storylines or just very attentive you might remember the reason behind killing the particular mobs on this level. As of now let me just say that I'm yet to see one quest that would break the monotony of mindless slaughter. Sure you can say that Space combat is cool. But it's not tied into any storyline and frankly on the 3d mission the space combat gets boring. PvP is accessible since level 10, and while there are no brackets. the stats scale as to match people in terms of health at least. To Bioware's credit, with proper class balance and maybe some tactics, this can be actually salvaged.
What can't be salvaged though is the dullness that is the graphic component of the game. This is yet another example of "realistic" brown-gray filter art that makes all the locations look bland. It looks like the best animators and artist were drafted to the ME3 team. Add to it the world which is splintered into subzones and the feeling of the immersion is somehow lost. You can see the effort on the part of the team, in the art-deco style of Coruscant and the ship designs, but once again the spark is missing. The zones are empty and filled up with artificial people you can't even interact with. A good example is the Senate of Coruscant which looks good from afar but you can't walk around it, you can't even climb anywhere around it, therefore the structure looks like a painting. What is worse is when you enter the senate you get the main hall (good) and corridors on each side with same architecture separated as there's only a unique class able to access certain areas. That's not how a cohesive world is created! And here is the main problem with the game. It was not designed as a multiplayer game world from the start. Overall, this is not a good continuation of Kotor. The atmosphere is still there among the plotlines but the feel is certainly not the same. There's a distinct lack of polish (mentioned before unclickable NPCs, empty locations, several simple chat, group and UI functions not available). Compare this not to WoW but to KOTOR the first where you can't go to cantina in Sith uniform on Taris to see what I mean by polish and attention to detail. I only recommend it if you're a die-hard fan of Star Wars, but the KOTOR players will probably be disappointed. At this point even the Mass Effect universe is overall a better crafted and genuinely interesting world compared to the one of TOR limited due to the licensing. If you're new to MMOs , WoW is a better package and I honestly can't recommend this game over it.

My biggest issue was the amount of lag that was prevalent in certain areas. My system runs games like WoW and Skyrim on Ultra without a problem and I was very frustrated by the lag issues even in a fairly unpopulated questing area. The Story and zones were fun and enjoyable if on the small side as far as zone size and variety but the lag and gameplay bugs made it frustrating to play, based on that I would have to give it a negative review untill those issues can be resolved. If those can be fixed I would probably rate this a 7-8. Expand

Playing through the first two worlds on both Republic and Imperial sides, I have enjoyed several hours of gameplay and it feels like I just scratched the surface. I review this game as a casual WoW player who enjoys single player RPGs and Bioware has done a great job bringing the genres together. The Old Republic includes voice acted quest progression that immerses the player into the story rather than the game. Much like in the KOTOR series your actions help form your character's story while also giving you benefits for the MMO such as being able to equip an evil light saber. Every player also uses a companion NPC which has useful abilities to aid your particular class (a healer for tanks for example). These companions will do crafting missions to gather resources as well as turn materials into items for the player. Crafting is simple and very similar to other MMOs; however, Bioware has included a chance for players to craft exceptional gear which adds bonuses to items and also allows them to craft the upgraded version into an even higher quality item. The Star Wars universe feels extremely large even before you're able to fly your own ship. Players take speeder bikes or taxis around huge maps giving each section of the world a large amount of space to expand and room for more quests and story. Groups of players can take on difficult missions called Heroics for bigger rewards and harder challenges. There are also many Flashpoints (TOR version of dungeons/instances) with full story lines and strategic boss battles for advanced players and teams. With only 7 days of experience, I still have so much left to play: PVP, Operations (raids), datacron searching (Google it), and space battles! I would recommend The Old Republic to players with patience, fast reaction, critical thinking, and at least a small fondness for the Star Wars universe. It is expected for a game with thousands of quests, a hundred zones, and millions of players to have bugs in the first month of its release. Many reviewers expect this game to be polished out of the box and blow all other MMOs out of the competition, but this is simply just another great game that everyone should play. Bioware has put an estimated 200-300 million dollars into the development of this game and they're listening to their players, do not underestimate the potential of The Old Republic. Expand

This is a bad thing for those who hate wow, but if you're like me and played wow a lot, especially in the first 3-4 years, well then you will feel right at home. It also follows the holy trinity of needing a tank, dps, and healers for taking on group content. The character creation is meh, they definitely need to get some less than humanoid races on there to mix it up a bit. The combat is cool, and even though the animations aren't as fluid as a fighting or adventure game, they're not nearly as bad as what many other people on MC are saying, and I give kudos to Bioware for attempting to make combat a bit more cinematic. The planets are all very well done, some are much bigger than others, but each one has a distinct feel, my only gripe is that BW seems to have split each planet up into sides, one for the imps and the other for the pubs so there was very little interaction as I leveled. First of all, Star Wars is way too expensive for what it is; it is worth 50 bucks max considering how buggy and unfinished the game is. I am currently a level 40 imperial agent, and I have to say that the game has a problem when the best way to level up and gain gold is to PvP yet the PvP is terribly constructed. There are three maps that you play in PvP warzones and matchmaking is a joke. You get matched with level 50s and level 14s all in the same queues, so basically you have gods running around the maps while other ppl just get owned and are incapable of any combat. Also, the map designs are buggy and in some cases assanine. For some reason they decided to include two air vents in the center of the Huttball map that randomly decide which way to throw you into the air. This means that your enemy can grab the ball, run into the vent and then get magically placed onto a much greater field advantage while you jump onto the vent chasing them and are launched basically into an acid pool. Maps are not supposed to decide winners and losers they are supposed to be the blank canvas that the game is played on. That is one thing they need to remove. Secondly, sometimes you get thrown into a PvP that is already losing just because the team had a few leavers, (ppl leave because their teammates are level 14s, etc.) It isn't a huge deal considering you still get some xp for doing basically nothing but joining the match, but it makes you realize how much the PvP is just a joke. They really need to make PvP cross-server matchmaking such as in League of Legends (hate to say it) where you have a huge pool of players that can be mixed and matched to the best balance instead of just choosing from what they have on ONE server.

I have to say that when people bring up the character creation, I didn't even realize how much better it could be but having only humanoid characters is a **** disaster. ITS STAR WARS. WHY CANT YOU BE A TRUE ALIEN? FAIL BIG TIME THERE BUDDIES.

Also traveling around the planets is a pain in the **** ass you have to go through so many air locks and lobbies and lifts before you get there. Cant you just fly your spaceship onto the planet? I mean WTF? DIDN'T THE MILLENNIUM FALCON DO THAT?

I wish I could give this game a 6.5, but a 7 is too high for something so buggy. Definitely not renewing for another 15 bucks a month I already got jipped paying 60.

The class stories I've played have been both well-executed and engaging-- unlike every other MMO I've ever played, they make me feel invested in the journey my character is taking. As Bioware is and always has been a company that uses its games to tell stories, it makes sense that this feature would be the number one distinguishing aspect of the game. On the downside, I am consistently underwhelmed by the options I have to customize my character both in terms of appearance and abilities. I was also disappointed to see how many genre conventions the game takes from World of Warcraft (which borrowed many of its conventions from Everquest). There do seem to be some balance issues with some of the classes, particularly in regards to PvP. I also have been frustrated by the frequency of frustrating bugs I've run into since hitting level 20. Overall, this is an excellent game that anyone who has enjoyed previous Bioware titles (especially Knights of the Old Republic) and the MMO genre should enjoy. There isn't much in the way of genre innovation here, but these aspects is brought together with Bioware style story that make shte game more engaging than any other MMO I've ever played (including WoW and SWG). This one's going to be around for a while. Expand

Not to mention once you get off your second world when leveling (about level 15-18) and you get into the 3rd and 4th world the space really opens up and you feel like you are in the star wars world. Personally, I will be playing this game for years, and judging by how many people bought this game and pre-ordered it will be very successful. It broke all of WoWs records. The game certainly isn't all bad. However the good bits and pieces it does have, have to be seen in context of the game as a whole and how much they add to the fun because there seem to be plenty of bad design decisions that break the immersion or are just annoying. For example, like any MMORPG, you will spend a lot of time running around, doing quests. For something so central to the gameplay, it is incredible how boring it was made. The quest design seems archaic. I wanted to experience the story but in the end the quest design stopped me playing. People mention the fully voiced NPCs. I found that this novelty grows old really quickly and wanted to skip the dialog. It also seems that this will make adding new content slow and costly - no criticism, just an observation. If you are going to buy this game, see it as something to tie you over until the next big game comes out, not as a long term MMO investment. You may enjoy this for a few weeks but probably get bored. I can only see the most die-hard KotOR or SW fans play this long-term. The bad gameplay design makes it hard to recommend it to anyone.

Saying that, I don't think that I have ever played a game that has captured the essence of Star Wars so well; I am absolutely having a blast playing SW:TOR. I am not a video game reviewer, so I will keep this short and sweet: I think about playing this game many times while I am doing other things, including playing other games! I was playing Uncharted 3 a day ago (which is part of one of my favorite series of all time) and I thought to myself, "I should really go play some SW:TOR. I'm missing out on the action!"

Suffice to say, the story is what brings the whole package together. I've always been a fan of Bioware and how they tell their stories, and even though this game is an MMO, they have still captured that same brilliance in this regard. Even many of the subplots are quite amazing!

I have a feeling that much of the negativity on this review board stems from people who have played and got bored with WoW and don't find this to be as big of a step that they were expecting or are still playing religiously and are afraid that this game may steal some of it's thunder. As a new player of the new generation of MMOs, I can honestly say that I couldn't have asked for much more. I am in love!

If you enjoy the Mass Effect series, and you like Star Wars, this is the game for you.

The influence of Mass Effect on this game is extremely obvious, from the conversation choices, to companion relationships, to the immersive storyline. I've put around 40 hours into the game so far, and am a little over half way to the level cap. From what I've heard, I will be playing for around 40-60 more hours until I reach that. 100 hours in one game is a pretty damn long time, especially considering that I have no even touched PvP, and there will be plenty more content opened up when I do hit that cap.

I don't want to go on for too long, because there are so many other reviews for this game already out there, but I just want to say that SWTOR is a game-changer IMO- this coming from someone who's not a big fan of MMORPGs, and who has never played WoW. My fiancee and I have fallen in love with this game, and look forward to furthering the story and progressing our characters each day. It's just plain fun, without that terrible grinding feeling that many MMOs give.

It has absolutely NO similarity to World of Warcraft whatsoever. If anyone is complaining that this game is a disappointment then this game may not be the game for them. For Star Wars fans like myself, I would absolutely recommend this game for you. People are obviously going to troll about a game that is similar in any fashion to another game, that is the way of life. People do not know how to review because they have nothing better to do besides write something completely untrue. This game is definitely new, I'll admit that there are a few flaws at the moment since this is a brand new MMORPG, but I expect these issues to be fixed within a few weeks or a few months. People who are not patient are of course going to troll on this website. To be honest, I think that Metacritic is the only website that there is so many negative reviews of this game. Is there some sort of rebellion towards good video games or something? Because I do not understand why there such a ridiculous number of negative reviews on GOOD GAMES.

All other attributes are worthless for a given class. I need to stick to a certain weapon type (single, double, or two-wiedled) again based on class. No free selectable weapon and armour feats, boring. The combat mechanics is to clicky, but that is maybe a matter of personal taste. In general the entire gameplay mechanics is to simple for me. I guess, Bioware wanted WoW players tp play SWTOR and I think that is what's going to happen. Straigtforward mechanics, no thinking required, clear roles. I have got some experience in Ultima Online, Lotro, DDO, EVE and 2 weeks trial in WoW. I like system in DDO most. Still tehre are classes and races, but a lot of options to shape a character. Also all quest run in the instances, so there is no kill x of y. Every attribute (Str, Dex etc.) has actually an impact on the Character. So, it's my Charackter after all. The dungeons are well designed. So, I would opt for more instances in SWTOR and more teamplay required. The graphics works for me, nevertheless the design feels steril. One don't need top nothc graphic to transmit the right impression.

The game is nearly as good as WoW. Well when WoW was released 7 years ago. There's zero excuse for a AAA title with this much time and money dedicated to development to be lacking such basic features as an Auction House or a /roll command for looting. There are so many things left out of the game you have to wonder what the beta tests were for.

    - Battlegrounds are a disaster. There are no level brackets so if you're not max lvl then you are getting pummeled into the ground.

    - There are no diminishing returns so stunlocks are the norm.

    - Everything is instanced. You're going to meet your buddy in town? Make sure you're in the same instance.

    - Zero need to group up, you have a team of NPC's to command.

    - Crafting requires no gathering or even leaving the town, your NPC's will do everything for you.

    - Don't fall in the water, there's no swimming physics so you drown in a puddle.

Dammit I wanted to keep this short but there are so many problems. I won't even get into balance because honestly that wouldn't be fair. But let's just say that some classes have skills that still don't work or they do things like make you fall through the earth.

I played Rift and I was one of those people telling others to stop complaining about things because I thought by complaining they were making the game look bad and as such the game would fail. I silently agreed with their complaints but I stayed silent.

Well this game isn't as good as Rift was and I won't be clucthing to the railing as this ship sinks. Maybe Blizzard can get the rights to Star Wars...

TLDR: Save your money, F2P games are better.

It baffles me that the negative reviews are complaining about lag, crashes, and server issues. I have only crashed a single time, and disconnected maybe 2 times in the 3 weeks I've played. This is significantly more stable than most, if not all other MMOs at launch.

The battle system reminded me of KOTOR, only heavily stylized and faster paced. The user interface does interfere with the

The graphics are also easy on the eye, not great, but they definitely will not hurt you, unless you're a graphics whore. If you go through the trouble of forcing anti-aliasing (an option that is baffingly absent), you will find the game actually looks great.

If you actually paid attention to the quest giver, it gives you a sense of purpose for that quest, significantly decreasing the "grind" feeling. Your class quest starts off slow, but picks up significantly after the end of your 1st act. The animation only looks stiff if you compare it to a single player game, but then you remember most MMOs have a set looping attack animation and skill animations. In SWTOR, you can watch your character deflect the bolts and attacks coming at him from multiple angles (if you're a lighstaber wielder). Each class and their mirror has its own mechanic: The Sith Warrior/Jedi Knight needs to build up fury/focus with basic attacks or other skills, the Trooper/Bounty Hunter can instantly regenerate their mana, the Smuggler/Imperial Agent has a cover mechanic, which lets yo use cover skills and also gives a defensive bonus, and the Sith Inquisitor/Jedi Consular has a traditional mana system.

The classes also branch into 2 advanced classes, both of which branches your class into two very different roles. For example, the Inquisitor has a skill that knocks back all enemies around him/her. When he becomes a Sorcerer, this skill becomes a defensive tactic against anyone surrounding him. If he becomes an Assassin, however, the skill is redefined into an ambush skill, one of which you can knock people off cliffs or stun them long enough for you to inflict severe damage.

There are quests called Heroic Quests and Flashpoints. Heroic quests take place on a planet, and usually require you to find a group to have a hope of completing it. Flashpoints are story-heavy instances, where you and 3 other players take the role of a strike team. I've found that Flashpoints are disappointingly empty story-wise, from your first flashpoint, to the flashpoint where you encounter a character from KOTOR 1 and 2. (hint hint) The final flashpoints feel like episode 6 of the Star Wars saga, extremely dramatic and gives you a genuine desperation feeling. Each Flashpoint boss has its own strategy, which you will need to figure out to beat. My team and I wiped on one flashpoint boss several times before we searched up the strategy.

PVP is fun, but there is only 3 warzones so far. It also definitely favors the higher levelled characters, as they have skills and fully specced trees that give them the advantage. For example, my Sith Juggernaut's Force Charge will stun the enemy, and I can move while using Force Choke. This definitely gives me the edge in PVP. However, it is a very slight edge, and most matchups come down to whoever has more skill.

I would give this a full score, but there is one severe flaw: endgame. There is absolutely nothing to do at endgame except one raid. The single player quests which take place on Ilum also turn into a grind fest quickly, and you will be better of starting another character.

Bioware has promised many features unavailable in most other MMOs, one of them being the fabled "Guild Capital Ship". They have also promised more planets, more flashpoints, more warzones, and most importantly, more raids. I look forward to watching this game grow and develop as time passes.

The game feels souless and just comes across as an incomplete product which has been rushed. Star wars is a global cash cow and it really is being milked for all it's worth with such a terribly over priced game. The game is supposed to run on the majority of systems, however many players (myself included) have experienced severe lag which basically makes any decent PvP redundant. For a game with a supposed $300m budget a problem which hinders the primary selling point of the MMO market is unforgivable in every sense. How can a game which brings computers to their knees have such poor graphics? It really is just WoW in space with terribly cringeworthy writing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7pgk7TZO_c& as an example of one of the horrible cut scenes - and no that wasn't even filmed during the beta, that's something Bioware want you to pay monthly to sit through) and regurgitated MMO game play which could be swapped with the game play of any of the last 10 or so major MMOs and would seem pretty samey. This game was intended for two sets of people: MMO players who wanted something different, and Star Wars fans - most notably those who were fans of the KotOR series. This game others NOTHING for either of them. During the prerelease interviews with Bioware employees they promised this game would innovate a dying game genre whilst appeasing Star wars fans by sticking to lore and basically being a continuation of the KotOR series. Without offering any spoilers I can suggest that this game has basically forgotten that KotOR 2 ever existed. In terms of end game so far there is only one raid which features a couple of tank and spank bosses and a brief extension of the PvP battlegrounds that players could choose to join from level 10. One of the key points of the star wars series is that it captures people's imaginations; Being evil villains in space! Being a hero of the republic! It is such a diverse series with thousands of unique characters it really is disgusting that every single player characters looks exactly the same. There are basically four body choices for everyone which is the only unique aspect of your character (everyone is a humanoid and exactly the same height - sounds really FUN). The four body types include - Child body (a mini version of the adult body - yes 10 year old children in this game have massive racks - gotta reach out to EVERY market haven't we Bioware? ) Japanese anime style body, steroid packed weight lifer body and of course morbidly obese fat man. The hairstyles are nothing like the star wars series and seem to have come straight out of the latest FF game. Another unique feature which TOR promised us was space combat. Although this is the favourite part of the game for myself... that isn't because it is good, just that every single other aspect of this game is horrible in every way, shape and form. It is fun for the first 30 minutes but considering the amount of time people put into MMOs the repetition of this particular aspect of the game would kill me. They even managed to make you grind mobs whilst you are supposed to be flying the ship! Another brilliant USP for TOR was the companions. Their two major benefits are supposed to be helping during combat and also skills. The skills in this game are a complete waste of time and any items you get out of them are dwarfed by those you find elsewhere. It is a complete waste of time in game to spend any time whatsoever crafting / picking / looking for herbs. subscir
For the majority of time in game I have played a Jedi Knight Guardian. This is a primarily a tank class so what BIoware did was give them a companion whose main function is... to tank. This makes PvE and grinding mobs (Which are ALWAYS in groups of three no matter what) pretty boring (I can only say this is from a Jedi Knight Guardian's point of view - apparently Bounty Hunter is a blast). To summarise I simply cannot see how I could justify throwing more money at EA with a subscription fee for this game. It is so repetitive in every sense of the word - A bland copy of every past MMO with a script loosely resembling the tortured remains of one which was partially based on small aspects of the KotOR series.

This is a dull, tedious and barren example of an MMO that is void of anything remotely valued in what should be a persistent massively-multiplayer universe. I'll give it a 1 for the false advert that it is a mmorpg, which it isn't

In the same way, SW:TOR has taken/copied what was good about WoW and improved upon it. People buy and play new games because they are better versions of what came before. Millions of people bought COD:MW3 because it was BETTER than Black Ops and MW2, not because it revolutionized the FPS genre. SW:TOR will not change the basic format of MMOs, but it is simply a better overall experience than what you find in WoW. The number one and most noticeable improvement is the addition of an actual story. You really care about your character in SW:TOR in a way you never do in WoW. Your character feels like an actual person with a real personality, and it makes the entire world that much more engaging. Sure, there are many improvements that they can and will make to polish the game even further, but this must be the most complete experience ever delivered by a brand new MMO. If you enjoy MMOs or Star Wars or both, it is in your best interest to give this game a shot. Expand

Not an mmorpg game, but a single-player rpg / cooperative-online rpg being advertised as a massively-multiplayer game. So the game, its content and features are certainly a 3.0 for the lack there-of as a massively-multiplayer game that has a $15/month subscription. It's more like a series of Star Wars the Clone Wars mini-games with absolutely no semblance of massively-multiplayer purpose. But the game is a multi-user single-player lobby-system rpg, though for that it should be buy-to-play, not a $15/month subscription model.

Just to name a few, and generally speaking, PvE is 5/10; shallow - linear - static - absolutely nothing massively-multiplayer about it, and very much like the heavily linear PvE game-play of Age-of-Conan. The voice-overs is where the points come from, but again that is what I would expect in a single-player rpg.

PvP is non-existent. Its a lobby-system third-person shooter within a confined shoe-box of capture the flag or control-points that offers no value or purpose to the over-arching republic verses empire struggle for control within a massively-multiplayer universe. It's a redundant short-lived purposeless activity of 10 v 10 lobby-system shallowness.

Massively-multiplayer universe is not persistent or influenced by your actions at all; your influence is non-existent, so when you do accomplish a clean-up of bad guys in favor of your faction in a story, nothing in the environment has changed what-so-ever. This is a very static and meaningless world.

Crafting itself is a mini-game that has absolutely no value compared to what drops from general and elite mobs in the world. The importance of Community-driven and incentivised Crafting and Merchandising doesn't matter as in this game, blue, and rare item drops from non-elite mobs and elite mobs drop at an astounding rate, diminishing the value of community-centricity and value of crafting and merchandising. So this where I would disagree on the importance of Crafting, rather than the mechanism for it. The importance of it upwards to mid-game is demeaning and non-existent, but an interesting mini-game.

There is not open-world player housing or player-controlled merchandising.

There are absolutely no server or community-wide dynamic events; none what-so-ever, which should incentivise and motivate one faction to thwart an enemey invasion or control of a territorial choke-point which comes with it risk of loss or substantial reward for winning. Non-existent.

Warzones are few and far between; 3 battle-grounds where there is no reward for winning. They are mind-numbingly repetitive and shallow.

Space combat is x-wing fighter; shallow and cheap at it's core.

Achievements are non-existent, as are challenging titles. Everyone's a jedi, but at one point in Beta I could achieve a "Vicious" title as a Republic character for leaning toward the Darkside. . .that has been removed as one example of several other achievements that have been removed which could 'distinguish' your character from someone elses'.

Character customization and distinguishment from an opposing player is non-existent. Every character playing looks exactly like someone elses, as do titles. You cant customize your character with distinguishing looks, appearance, title, dyed armor or clothing or color-crystal sabers, because there is no breadth or depth to any customization mechanics, features, titles, or modifications that are anything but few and which provides no visual distinction.

Be warned that if you purchse this game, you are purchasing a Single-Player lobby-system Knights of The Old Republic 2 with Cooperative-Online game-play elements, not a Massively-Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

Many years and 135+ million dollars later, Bioware has done it again! Yes, they finally managed to do what Korea has been doing on the regular for the last half decade! They have copied WoW! Okay, all joking aside, this is pathetic. I've been playing MMOs since Ultima Online, and I have to say it is saddening to see what happened to this industry when games like SW:TOR are actually being given high marks for anything. Calling the game a wow clone is actually a compliment this game doesn't deserve, as it falls short in so, so, so many areas I cringe at the thought of where all the money went. You're telling me after all these years and money, Bioware couldn't add anti-aliasing? After all these years and all this money, they couldn't add a LFG tool? Really? Nobody at bioware thought that would be important or high priority? Oh that's right, all they do is add a bunch of pointless dialogue with a point system to appease the plebs. No customizable UI? No mod support? Horrendously unbalanced PVP? You're telling me after all these years and all this money, and all this BETA testing, the game is still riddled with amateurish bugs and glitches? There are free games that were developed with one twentieth of the budget this game had that have all of these features and more, without all of the bugs of glitches. At LAUNCH. YEARS EARLIER. The success of this game will prove that all you need to do is pour money and marketing into a product and it will be successful, no matter if the product has any merit. Expand

I'm playing a Jedi Consular, master of the force. Except I'm pressing one of the three buttons to strike with my lightsaber or throwing dirt in my opponents eyes coupled with a ming vase to the face, that happens to be buried under the hull of a spaceship? That, to me, doesn't feel very 'Jedi like'. I expected to be throwing NPC's and other players around the room, jumping ridiculous heights or at least feeling like I have some degree influence over the physics around my character. I will try out other races and classes during the 20 days I have remaining of my sub but I shouldn't have to work at enjoying a game.

The story is single player orientated and it shouldn't be. An mmorpg for me should feel like you are part of something bigger than you are, like every player around you is important and not for the most part background/ tools to be used. Being surrounded by the 'chosen one' ruins it for me. The story doesn't suit the genre. If I wanted a great single player adventure with a social aspect, I could play Final Fantasy 7 with Skype running indefinitely, with no subscription costs. I'm really disappointed. I wanted SWTOR to really shine.

So why the 0 then? Bugs, unbalanced PvP, and terrible customer service. The amount of bugs in this game is just more than any MMO at release that I have ever seen. Everything from broke quests to entire classes unable to attack due to some ability casting bug. If you manage to get stuck into a zone from a bug and your fleet pass isn't up, expect to wait the full cool down of your fleet pass as CS won't come for you. Their response is always usually automated and tells you to use the /stuck command. Gee, thanks.

Lastly is the PvP which you can clearly see was put in at the last minute. No brackets in Warzones, ranged classes that do more damage than melee and have an array of CCs, stealth classes that can do 6-7k crits several times in a row(you'll only have about 10-12k health at level 50 not geared), and endless CC which never ends. You'd think that classes that gets various CCs wouldn't be too bad as you have this in most MMOs however...you can be CCed so much repeatedly even if you skill to get out of one CC to the point that you can be CCed the second later by another. There is DR but it takes so long to get there with some CC that you'll be dead long before that bar fills up. Plus even if the bar does fill its only DR on that certain type of CC. Various other CCs will still work. So it's not so much the classes in the case for CC as so much as there is no way to get out of it. You can jump out of a warzone spawn just to be CC and dead 5 seconds later and now get the chance to have to wait another 30 seconds before you get into battle. You spend a lot of time waiting behind stupid walls that manage to lock you in. If the enemy team kills you just as the doors blow up on voidstar and you're stuck with a full timer, not only do you have to wait that full timer along with whomever else died with you but now after the spawn wall does go down you have to run and catchup. The problem with this is the fact the enemy can easily blow up the next set of doors before you even get in range of them. Enjoy running to the next point.

I came for PvP and it was a mess that left me disappointed. There is an endless list of bugs and issues that need to be fixed to make this game stable. However at the rate they are going with patches I don't see this happening within the next 2-3 months so I would suggest looking at the reviews at that time.

Sigh, hopefully TERA/GW2 will be better. Subscription canceled.

As MMOs continue to steadily evolve into glorified lobby games, I have to question why we are still being charged $15 a month for them.

BioWare played it too safe with this game, choosing stick with the generic WoW-ish formula instead of trying new things. While not a terrible, it is incredibly average and simply feels outdated, as if it should have been released 4-5 years ago. If you have a hard on for Star Wars or Bioware you might like it, but otherwise it's probably best to pass on it until they release a free trial.

On one hand it is a pure Bioware game, with amazing RPG feature and story, a strong SW background and a very solid gameplay, very good realization, interesting PVP battlegrounds, the Companion system is great, ....

On the other hand, the comparison with WOW is unavoidable and this is where we see what's missing in TOR: the polish that Blizzard put in everything. There are a load of very good things in TOR but, for example, myriads of small things that makes your life easy in WoW are missing (too many load screens, too many small zones, Town Portal system that needs to be improved, tons of small information that should be present in details instead of giving overall numbers, several bugs that should have been eliminated in Alpha version in the fly system for example, or in the fact that often you are out of a BG because the game does not let you go outside of the start zone before the end of the timer).

Also some key features like a LFD system are missing, which makes finding a group for Flashpoint a real pain in the ass. There are no statistic system that would allow a player to track what he's done in the game, ...
Also not possible yet to have two spec, which means that you need a full respec if you want to be a tank or a heal, which makes, again, finding flashpoint groups a pain in the ass...

Very very mixed feeling. Sadly, I feel like it misses maybe 6 month of polish, a little the same feeling as for when Warhammer was launched, very strong base but not polished enough. Way better than WoW at the start but the competition is not anymore Wow in 2005... Prediction is that there will be c. 500-700k player for a while but baring implementation of the key features very very quickly, there will be a huge leakage as soon as Diablo 3 or Guild Wars 2 will be out.

A good game, but not good enough. A very good, BioWare, RPG game, but not enough to nail the MMO part bit.

Finally the side games... there are 3 different PVP games that are played and I have not seen mentioned anywhere. One is like a football game where players get a ball and try to score while the other team tries to stop u. One is a capture the flag style game, and the final is a break through walls game while the other team tries to stop u. All are fun.

This is also easy to navigate in and UNDERSTAND what quest you are on, what you are doing, and where to go next (With thrown in side quests and some fun crafting options)

Playing beyond that, however, it becomes clear that the game truly succeeds neither as an MMO nor a high-quality roleplaying game. What initially seem to be high-quality, voice-acted cutscenes with moral choices become repetitive variations on a theme with the same rehashing of stock animations (look especially at the hand gestures). The moral choices become somewhat inconsequential because they only affect your singleplayer experience, with no real way to impact the broader game.

As the other comments have hit on, this is a linear singleplayer hub game where every zone is instanced, mobs are stationary, character creation leaves much to be desired especially with the Star Wars IP, and gear diversity is nonexistent to the point of leaving the game's economy -- a hallmark of many successful MMOs -- irrelevant.

As the "massively multiplayer" features are minimal, SWTOR should honestly be evaluated on its merit as a singleplayer roleplayer game. Taken in that light it is far inferior to leading titles. The game's sole innovation of fully voiced cutscenes for every quest could be the future of MMOs, and this will likely be seen as an early, flawed attempt. 4/10

4- great stories: all quests are voice acted. this forces you to slow down and actually participate in the story. while i didn't see the significance of such a decision initially, after a few days of play, i get it. it breaks up the questing so you don't feel like you just running on a tread mill of "go here, do this". and you have options that allow you to customize your interaction in a manner consistent with your character concept. some folks have complained that wanting to get light/dark points forces you to answer a certain way, but they're missing the point. you have ample opportunity for light/dark points. you don't HAVE to respond in a way that will get you min/maxed. so yes, you DO have a choice about your interaction. 5- crafting and missions are pretty cool. you can send your minions off to do things for you and secure resources that way. 6- the minions are great. they make a significant contribution to your efforts, allowing you to do things you could not other do. they also have favor points you can build up to increase their loyalty and effectiveness. there are even romantic options with some of them and, according to bioware, more to come. 7- the light/dark points add an extra layer to an already mult-layered game. there are multiple ways to advance and you can open some pretty interesting dialogue options that have very interesting outcomes. -- thus decreasing the overall "linear" feel of the game.
8- a good main story line that really contributes to a feeling of growth in your character. the story lines are class specific so you get to really fill out a role and philosophy.
9- there's pvp. in areas and servers so you can take your pick.
10- it's a fairly open world with lots of exploration opportunities. all in all, i feel like this is a game that contributes a good bit to the mmo genre and is presents a truly enjoyable experience on the level of wow or coh/v. good job bioware.

Having played every decent MMO since Ultima Online and being an avid gamer all my life i can state the following regarding SWTOR :
Just Like most MMO's and so many pioneering games Swtor is doomed to have hate posters all over. Mainly people who see their wow guilds being disbanded because half or more of their guildmates left the game for SWTOR will go get their anger out on every forum

It is wrong to compare it to any other game. Swtor is unique in many ways mostly the depth of the story that they made for each class as well as the amazing work that was done on the music that surrounds the game everywhere you go. The game is very stable the population on the servers is exactly what it should be the speed that you get a group for an instance or pvp is really good.
It is a game for almost everyone i could say although i cant talk about the end game as i havent reached that level yet. each class has a very distinctive role in groups in PVE or PVP environment. all in all i highly recommend the game to solo or group players to star wars and non star wars fans. i do not recommend it to people who will want an improved version of wow or EQ or anything in that respect. SWTOR is Unique in many more ways than one its an Epic production from Bioware and Lucas arts, its not here to change the genre its here to make players HAPPY !

Well, I have a mixed response to this game. I pre-ordered, and was given access on 12/14, and have been playing a huge amount since then, so that's what this review is based upon.

    The Pros

It's really pretty. The graphics are delightful to this ole' guy's eyes. I have a two year old computer and have all my settings on high and it runs really well. I've heard lots of complaints from people about FPS, and I believe them, but so far I haven't experienced. The story is also really good, and I enjoy the voice acting, although, yes, a few responses are clearly repeated from time to time. "Give me the whole story, and more slowly this time" was said by my Jedi Knight more than once on the way to level 35 (my highest so far). So that's a little frustrating, but minor.

    The Cons

Of course there are bugs, and while the game is reasonably solid in all crucial aspects at roll-out, there are a few game destroying bugs that have not been addressed. First of all, Customer Service sucks ... I mean, rotten, smelly eggs. Perhaps they weren't prepared for the onslaught, but it's nearly impossible to get real, substantive help. Reports take days to get responses to, and when you do, it's automated and canned and not helpful. Calling the 800#s are just as bad.

But the clincher for me? At lvl 35, I decided to redo my character. Yes, I'm crazy, but I had a sense of how the game is played now, and wanted to do it over and "fix" my mistakes. So I sent some items and all my cash to an alt and deleted my guy, remaking him with the same name. I received all the items and cash fine on my alt, but when I mailed it back to my new main, it disappeared into the ether. To the tune of 83,000 credits worth of two weeks work. I cannot get a response or help from the CSRs. Apparently there's an issue where if you remake a guy with the same name, problems happen. There's a thread on the website where many people have had the same experience, and yet it's still not listed as one of the "Known Problems" so that you don't do this by accident. Nor has it been fixed. It's very disappointing, so beware of that. It's nearly killed the game for me. I don't mind starting over, I do mind all my work going to into the ether and not getting help from a game I'm paying for. From the responses some people have received (I am not one of them, since I haven't received a non-canned response), its' like the CSRs think all people are scamming them and won't help get anything back.

It's this kind of problem, and utter lack of response to fixing it by the CSRs and techs, that make me unable to give this game a high rating. It's unfortunate, too, because it has the makings of something really good otherwise.

While it isn't revolutionary, once you have played an MMO with full voiceovers, it would be difficult to go back to text based games.

The crafting system is addicting, and there are very few bugs for a launch title. Not to mention the story is pretty amazing for an MMO. If you're a Star Wars fan, you'll want to pick this one up, for sure.

The large amount of negative reviews is laughable to me. I am thoroughly enjoying The Old Republic. The game is most certainly not without its flaws. The pvp is unbalanced, disconnects are too frequent to be acceptable in the long run and while the voice acting is pretty awesome most of the time I do find myself skipping through some of the cutscenes to get back in the action occasionally. A lot of the complaints I've seen are based on the fact that it is a "wow clone". I don't disagree with this but I feel like a lot of the reasons that wow had a customer base of multiple millions for 6 years is because it had what many mmo gamers were looking for and there is nothing wrong with sticking to a similar formula. As a bounty hunter I have found the questlines to be intriguing and enjoy the Mass Effect-esque dialogue wheel. The game does a fantastic job making me feel like the hero in my story. The early flashpoints and heroic group quests feel well tuned to easing new mmo players into the genre and become more challenging as you level up. The crew skills seemed a little off at first but as i became accustomed to them I like the fact that you can multi task with them and are not forced to stand in a city by an auction house to grind them up. As i am only level 32 at the time I have not yet experienced any of the endgame content and that of course will be a big factor in determining how long I subscribe. But at the moment I am optimistic about it and my guild plans on starting operations in January. All in all I'm very impressed with the game and I feel that if Bioware takes a page out of Blizzard's book and listens to their community when making changes they will be able to keep this game afloat for a good while. Give Bioware time to smooth out the rough spots and connection issues and let the game have its growing pains. In the meantime enjoy it for the engaging storylines and the best part of the mmo genre: killing e-beasts with your friends. If the cards are played right this game will only improve with time. As a long time Bioware fan, this game couldn't be more disappointing. While the tell-tale storytelling is there as you would expect from a Bioware game, there's strong evidence that the game itself was rushed and is a cash-in on the hopes the rabid Star Wars fanbase would clamor for any chance to have a Star Wars MMO that wasn't Galaxies.

1.) Gameplay and Graphics. The game immediately feels dated in terms of gameplay and graphics. While Bioware definitely focused on storytelling, what is lacking horribly is innovations in gameplay which is what you spend the other 95% of your time interacting with inbetween voice-acting and storytelling. Whether they ported in a base-line foundation for the gameplay under-carriage or that they simply forgot to focus on it, the mechanics are boring, second-rate and repetitive. If you're looking for a game that looks and feels like it was made in 2011, this isn't it. The game is a 2005 MMO with a Bioware story and Star Wars IP shoved into it forcibly.

    2. Instanced Co-op vs MMO. This game isn't an MMO. It's an instanced Co-op game. I could write a novel on why but the simple fact is that the world is missing from this game as a character. You move about the world in transitions / instances and never really get the feeling you're in a massive world but a simulator of sorts. It's highly jarring given the setting that you end up feeling as though you're playing a a co-op RPG that decided to throw in some MMO features. Many of the innovations and foundations built as standards for MMO's are missing making the game feel like it's missing something at all angles based on the MMO expectation it sets.

    3. Repetitive. If you're here for the story, that will last you for a while but as MMO's goes, it's a distraction from what is missing which is an innovative mechanism for end-game, combat and the like. The quests while strengthened by voice acting and writing, lets you down as you realize you're still a fed-ex / errand boy to every NPC in the universe. The voice acting eventually becomes an annoyance as you realize you're paying for the games voice-talent and that once the glint of this innovation wears away, your left with a boring and repetitive standard mechanic of quests. I actually found myself annoyed quite quickly, and unfairly, as my new friends to the game wanted to hear the same damn quest dialogue. This early in the life-span of the game, SWTOR shows its true weakness in that once Alts become more and more common (since there's no end game), the repetition will become more and more annoying as the splinter-archs of stories based on your choices become less and less meaningful.

    4. New content. While the promise of expansions are already floating around, the fact that they're built on the same foundation makes me wary, as well as if Bioware will be able to keep the only innovation in their game (voice acting/storytelling) at the same level as expansions roll out. Overall, the game feels like a flash in the pan for me that I spent far too much on due to hype. As my friends already begin to consider returning to WoW (ack), the true teller for SWTOR will be if they can keep people interested enough that they don't run back to what they know is working for them. MMO players are fickle given investments made in other games like WoW and EVE that are always there waiting for their return and I'm already seeing my group of friends second guess the game for similar reasons as I've laid out.

The reason that I'm doing this review is because I feel that while the user reviews are fairly accurate (if some are a little bit harsh. I wouldn't give the game a 0 just because you're disappointed in it) it seems the majority of the critic reviews are a little biased, only pointing out the positive features rather than the negatives, which in my opinion need to be made aware of at the same time.

Graphics: "With the graphics settings cranked to full the game is arguably the best looking MMO to date. From the fine details like the equipment players can wear and the expressions on the faces of NPCs during conversations, right up to the brilliant looking environments." is a quote from an Australian review which I find bizarre, as even with the settings cranked up the full the graphics just look... odd. While they are better than the majority of western MMOs and better than alot of older MMOs, if you compare the graphics of TOR to the graphics of MMOs released from last year to MMOs about to be released next year, they are by far not the "best looking mmo" If anything, the graphics look like Dragon Age's except, even more cartoony and low quality. The animations are stagnant and stiff, the running animations especially look like they've been done by a bad actor who doesn't know when to run on cue.

Sound: Your typical Star Wars music, everything sounds right and fits the theme, the score is great also. However, some lines are reused when it comes to voice acting, but I'll let it slide.

Gameplay: While the gameplay is like World of Warcraft (the endgame especially, when it's around ten people slashing on one enemy. You'd think that only one lightsaber slash would kill a human, it did with Qui-Gon Jinn!) I feel like there was no escape from that style of gameplay for TOR and what's so bad about it being similar to WoW's? it's still fun and to be honest, they make the gameplay more exciting than WoW's anyway. The most unique thing about the game is the dialog choices, but it just feels... slapped on. If anything, it makes it feel like the multiplayer aspect is slapped on more than the dialog. It really does feel like a single player game with a chat room. There's no need to find a party at all. The fact that this is more important than the multiplayer aspect is disappointing. Oh, and don't get me started on PvP. It's nonexistent. The gameplay is fine for a single player game and is still fun at times, but for an MMO, it's just not good enough.

Story: My favorite story by far is the Bounty Hunter's, it's a ton of fun. I like how each class gets their own unique story.. but, why can you have sex with everybody? It seems like everyone wants to get in bed with you from the second that they meet you. There are SO MANY people you can have one night stands with, it's weird.

Server performance: I've experienced no lag, but there's something even worse than that concerning the servers. There are too many for a game just launching. It seems that every server is either full or empty. That's your choice. You either wait in huge queues or you go on a barren land of a server, maybe that's why nobody wanted to party with me. Extend the server capacity, Bioware. OH! And there's even queues for the website and forums. No point.

Random niggles I found on my journey: There are a few graphical glitches in the game, some are quite funny because of it, but every MMO has glitches on launch, so I'll let it pass.
Why am I stuck in a building most of the time? I'd like to see some outside.
I'd also like to go more than knee deep in water.
Why is every playable race humanoid? Is it because they're not pretty enough for the oh so important sex scenes? They're just different colored humans. The most alien looking are Twi'leks, but they're humans with tentacles on their head! I'd like some actual alien looking playable races
I'd avoid the forums, it seems to be a war between die hard haters who have a vendetta against the game and people who bow at Bioware's feet. You'll get caught in the crossfire even if you create a topic featuring constructive criticism or a simple question. I fear for the game once some of the community lose interest and go back to their regular MMOs. What are we left with?

However, if your one of those types that is going to power level without sleep from 1-50 and take no enjoyment from that, just to get to the end game content, I would recommend waiting a little while before signing up.

Reading a lot of the negative comments, they contain a lot of similarities, and those similarities look to be from people that are either so burned out from World of Warcraft that this game just hits too close to home to that game to hold any enjoyment, or people that aren't familiar with what works in mmo's and only tried this game because they like Star wars, expecting to find some type of console action type game wrapped up in an MMO. There are some legitimate arguements from people hoping this MMO would have gone in a totally new direction--to that I can say if you didn't enjoy the game mechanics from wow, this game probably isn't for you (unless you love Star Wars so much you can overlook everything else).

Anybody that has spent a substancial amount of time in WOW, and gave this game an honest try, would see this game changes enough about the familiar formula to feel fresh and new. I have played WOW for many years, still enjoy it, and really enjoy what this game has to offer.

I have also read a lot of comments stating this game is really single player only. To that I would respond that while the single player content is much more fun to play through, with companions and superior story telling, this does not take away from what the game has to offer for groups or pvp. A bunch of my WOW guild members are now playing this game, and I have to say grouping up with them for difficult quests, or to do a flashpoint (what this game calls a "dungeon"), is just as enjoyable as it is in WOW. PVP is also not a hugh departure for how it plays out in WOW, but you still need skill and thought to secure victories--try randomly mashing your abilities like some suggest on here and see how far that gets you.

With such a hugh investment in development, can anybody really blame this game for taking an approach to appeal to the extremely large playerbase that already exists for WOW. If this game felt too different from that one, you'd would end up alienating that existing player base.

One thing that I will agree should be different is the upfront cost of the game. This isn't the same playing field for MMOs that was around when World of Warcraft launched. I'm sure they are charging full price upfront for fear if the game does not catch on they will have at least recouped some of their development costs. But they should have confidence in their game enough to reduce the starting cost or make it free, then start charging their monthly subscription fee.

For all the WoW fans who are distraught to see other people enjoying a game similar to their own, consider this:

Star Wars: The Old Republic from Bioware closely resembles not only World of Warcraft, but Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic...from Bioware.

When was KoToR released? 2003. It had a much more simplified version of the skills queue and combat exchange, but it was more or less similar. WoW was released in 2004. Are we to call it a KoToR clone? The skill tree always reminded me of the skill trees in Diablo II. Using the logic of some people we could call World of Warcraft a Diablo II clone. The fact is, that isn't true. Neither is the idea that ToR is a WoW clone. Now enough of the vs. crap. I think that most people who buy this game should expect an MMO and everything which comes with a major multiplayer RPG online. Some of the quests are mundane grinds. Some of the gameplay outside of the character story gets tired and old. Some of the combat and running all over the place gets tedious after a while. If you can't handle those things however you shouldn't criticize the game, you should simply try to get a refund and never attempt to play an MMO ever again.

    Graphics/Technical:

The graphics snobs who write reviews always amuse me. I suppose if a game is released and it isn't automatically the industry standard for graphics and artistic styling, it is a massive failure of some sort. This game looks just fine to me. Is it over the top amazingly great looking? No. Does it look like a pathetic pile of crap? Hardly.

I've never played a game which rendered distances so well, or one which transitioned so well between zones. Sure there are a few launch hiccups here and there- sometimes I get lighting glitches where the screen has green rays on it for a second, then they go away. Oh no.

I wonder if the WoW fanboys recall the initial launch of that game the way I do. It was mired with its share of problems just like any massive game like this. I'm actually surprised that this game was released so relatively polished, considering how the recent (and when I say recent I mean the past 8 years) trend of game developers is to release a totally unfinished barely playable product and then slowly patch it over the course of a few months.

I'd also like to point out that while some are disappointed with the graphics as they are:

    A. There have been games which have been released in the past which were so taxing and so optimized for the latest VGA technology, a huge chunk of the buyers couldn't play the game without major overhauls to their computer systems. ToR is a taxing enough game for an average system, but for the sake of earning the respect of graphics snobs, I suppose they should have made it more "pretty" so that .001 percent of the population would be able to actually play it.

    B. I once again recall the launch of another popular MMO called World of Warcraft. I remember thinking at the time "man this game looks kind of crappy and cartoonish". I know I wasn't alone in that opinion. I feel that if a game has good enough gameplay however, the graphics aren't really all that important.

    Final rating & explanation:

I give this game an 8/10. I hoped for more out of the gameplay as did many people. I was hoping that this would be a bit of a break from the KoToR/WoW mix that it feels like. I don't think I can fault it for not being a vague and abstract hope I carried, but I feel that it could have tried harder in a few places. I felt the grind feeling around level 14 or so and that hasn't happened to me in an RPG since I made the mistake of playing some crazy ass Korean RPG a few years ago.

The characters are fun, the gameplay is typical, but it is a formula which has proven to be fun or at least addicting enough to keep lots of people playing. The stories I've played through were entertaining as a Star Wars fan (hell I enjoyed this a lot more than those stupid prequels) and overall I would recommend this game to someone who is an MMO and Star Wars fan. If you're playing this game but you don't actually love Star Wars all that much I think it would be easier to find fault with it.

The character creation is boring and outdated; 4 main body types and more or less a handful's selection of faces, hair styles/colors, etc. The gameplay is the same rehashed skill-less clickfest that every MMO released within the last 10 years have been (just Star Wars flavored). The graphics are greatly disappointing. I started playing RIFT while waiting for this game, and guess I was greatly spoiled with the large, beautiful, lush, open environments. The graphics in SW:TOR are lackluster, even with all the settings maxxed out. The players are the same rude **** you may have gotten used to in WoW; people getting in your face if they're questing in the same area and you kill a mob that aggroed on you becauase they feel they have a right to every mob in that area. The game also has some billing issues; many credit cards will not work due to the way things are setup. That forces you to buy game cards (definitely not the cheapest option). So here I am with a $150.00 statue and $30/60 extra days worth of game time. I'd rather have my $180 back. Please don't think I'm just whining; I made a mistake and will deal with it. I am suffering buyer's/subscriber's remorse and if I can save someone else the same, I would like to. This game is not worth the time and money, even at $50 dollars plus subscription. If you want to play a great MMO with fantastic graphics, play RIFT. If you love WoW, but would like to play a Star Wars-themed game, keep playing WoW and play KOTOR on the side. I've tested WoW, AoC, DD online, DC online and SW:TOR beta and i must say that SW:TOR is the best MMO what I've played. WoW is too overrated and now it seems like Blizzard has used all ideas because they added pandas to Wow which is just stupidest thing what they have done... And now Bioware has made masterwork of MMO which will be The best of MMORPG!!!! May the force be with you Bioware...

I am pretty satisfied with what I'm seeing so far. Gameplay is pretty good. The quests are story driven (which I really like). Being in parties are fun. The areas you explore are humongous. I only have one character who is a sith assassin, and I'm having fun with that route. Though it does tend to get repetitive at times but that doesn't really bother me that much. Though it does tend to get repetitive at times but that doesn't really bother me that much. If you liked KOTOR and pretty much anything bioware has released in the last 5 years than you will most likely enjoy this game. With that all said, I have a suggestion for anyone who is entirely dependent on critic and user reviews. Don't be. Unfortunately there are company's who have bought reviews, and it is blatantly obvious that there are a lot of trolling user reviewers who give ridiculous scores on both ends of the spectrum, especially on metacritic. I was tracking the score for The Old Republic for the first 10 minutes on metacritic because I was curious, and what I saw was a pretty large influx of negative reviews. 10 minutes, all they could have done is literally watch the beginning cinematic and done maybe only one quest. It's highly possible that most of the negative reviewers haven't even played the game, and they are just hating on bioware out of spite because of some stupid vendetta they hold against the company. You know now that I've said that, I even saw one review on this game admittedly saying that he is giving the game a 0 because he is "protesting the company". Don't buy into this crap guys. In fact, you will see this for literally every game that is listed on metacritic. You will even see people giving the original Star Wars: Knights of the old republic incredibly low ratings just because they hate bioware. You will see people giving 0s to games like Skyrim because they don't like Bethesda. Hell, I bet when Mass Effect 3 comes out there will be at least 10 negative reviews in the first 30 minutes since its been released. Now, on the other end of the spectrum you will see people throwing in a bunch of tens as well. You shouldn't always trust these scores as well. Look at Modern Warfare 3, there are people giving that game a 10 when it's basically a copy pasta of Modern Warfare 2. Now I'm not saying that every bad review is a fake, there are people who do have valid complaints about the game. One of them is that the game can be repetitive, and that's fine. Not every high scored review is a fake either, the certain game could have been simply amazing. Though I am saying that you should not base your purchases entirely off of metacritic scores. Go around the internet and do a little bit more research instead. What's even better is to ask people you know. Those are my two cents, and I hope it helps whoever is reading this make good decisions about what to purchase in the future. Not that I'm saying that The Old Republic is a bad purchase but you know what I mean. Expand

The questing is completely unique and unlike any other MMO I've ever played, however as with an MMO, questing is only a means to an end to which this game is severely lacking. Almost no UI customization (can't even resize the existing UI, which I would argue is just awful), no combat log, just a standard LFG channel (no tool like in Wow), no achievement, Legacy mode (which was hyped up by Bioware) is "coming soon", no macros and seems no support for 3rd party add-ons in the near future at all, combat is incredibly clunky as can be seen from numerous youtube videos where the game prioritizes combat animations over cooldowns, forcing you to wait for an animation to finish before you can use another ability.

I could go on and on about what this game is missing and why it's lacking but in the end it doesn't compete with other MMO's out right now for features and content. Maybe in 3-4 months it will but I'm not paying a subscription fee to hope.

All other mmorpgs are boring, just farming. This one.. you level up without even checking the level bar, just from story to story, from cooperative with friends to minigames, pvp and crafting, exploration and secrets, the day is gone and you're a bit stronger. You remember each quest you did, if you're not just a console gamer of nowdays action only, you will find that this wheel runs very well and different. Dialogs in cooperative (with friends) are a pure innovation not only in mmorpgs but in game genre, there is no other mmorpg that may say the same out there, other mmorpg are just the usual farming and action will not solve this (Tera already failed in its land, you'll see the others).
The game is not a 10, it's an 8 for me (but the other mmorpgs are 5, I hate farming and I was abandoning the genre for that), I put this vote just because I think the users that vote 0 to a good game like this must be balanced by somebody (this vote system sucks really, failed completely).

I honestly don't understand the references to how "polished" the game is when reading the critic reviews. It's far from polished. Yes, the cut-scenes are extremely good, and the static scenery is rendered pretty well, the animations are appalling. I mean really bad. You can get an impression of that from the various YouTube videos, but you don't really see how bad they are until you play.

The user interface (UI) is clunky and totally dominates the display area even on my 28" screen at 1920x1200 resolution. There's no way to scale it down either, and other than the chat box you can't move UI components around.

The headline figure for creating this game is £100M. It's crystal clear from the moment you start playing that this money went into hiring great actors and animators for the cut-scenes and not into the actual game play, which is weak, shallow and generic.

And that's a shame, because I really, really enjoyed the immersive world of the original Star Wars Galaxies game. I was hoping I'd find a version of that "done right", in much the same way as Rift is "WoW done right".

    But it's not.

I do agree that most people giving it a 0-5 either shouldn't be playing MMOs or were going to give it that score no matter what because of their love for WOW. I'm sure you mean well, there were just a few things that stood out in your review as a bit unfair. As for the game: character creation needs work, and the searching options in the auction house are a nightmare. Other than that, this game is better than WOW in almost every way. Let's not forget people, this game is only as far a step forward from WOW as WOW was from Everquest. I wouldn't talk about WOW like it's being ripped off as you will be accused of not knowing anything about the subject you're talking about. P.S. I haven't done PVP yet, but everyone I ask about it says it's much better than WOW in that it doesn't pander to the occasional player as much as WOW did. In short, i have now received a refund for the game. Hopefully the following information will save further players like myself £44.99 for probably the worst MMO (Lobby game, this isnt massive) game ever. The gameplay (what really matters!) = Extremely Poor, i've played over 3 years of WoW, 3 years of Planetside, various other MMO's, even the free ones. Swtor's gameplay is extremely linear and basic, its an insult to anyone who has played WoW. There is no "skill" or sense of achievement from the gameplay mechanics what-so-ever and it quickly becomes boring. You have to stand still, wait for the game animations to catch up, then you are able to start attacking/casting. Once in combat, you are simply pressing the same buttons which all seem to do the same thing and stand there and take any damage which is simply thrown at you. There is no reward for experienced players in this game. The voice-overs are great on the other hand, however, you will spend 90% of your playtime in the actual gameplay, and, as above, this really does get boring quick.

Champions online, was more enjoyable for gameplay mechanics than this game, and that is now free!

As others have said, "AAA" titles with 150-300million budgets should never be able to release a game like SWTOR and simply rely on the Star Wars franchise and marketing to satisfy its customers.

Speaking as an experienced gamer, i beg anyone with sense, do not waste your money on this game. Try World of Warcraft, that game is worth you time and dedications to which you will spend hours upon hours of your time enjoying the gameplay, you wont with SWTOR.

A major letdown, a insult to PC gamers, a good idea of where the gaming market has gone in releasing poor gameplay titles with hugh budgets and storylines.

LucasArts generally exercised greater quality control of Star Wars games than most licensed properties receive, though that didn't necessarily translate into titles that were actually good. I've played a few other Star Wars games in the past, and while the SNES platformers were pretty good, this one is even better. Knights of the Old Republic may just be the best game in the franchise, and succeeds at being a top-tier RPG even if one has no interest in Star Wars. BioWare did the license proud.
