After months of watching this pitiful downvoting of good games for pathetic fanboy reasons, I've decided it's time to contribute.

The criticisms about linearity and 'lobby' gaming are understandable (the lobby instancing really turned me off from GW, but it was only part of it, and the rest of the game didn't make up for it unlike this game), but poor. I have played many MMOs (WoW, Aion, CoH, SWG, EvE, Warhammer Online, Rift, Vanguard, etc) and I honestly can't think of any *good* utterly sandbox MMOs. And SWTOR is *not* any more linear than any of the games I've listed. If you wanted a sandbox MMO, and you're looking for it in a game that has voice acting and cutscenes, you're doing it wrong. The story is massive, immersive, and well crafted. I've never felt so invested in my character since vanilla WoW, or let alone as excited to play an MMO for that matter. The zones are much more open than other Bioware games, and more open than in games like Aion, where i felt like a rat in a maze between quests. The warzones are fun and well designed. Perhaps the biggest weakness in this game is the lobby style zone instancing which can break immersion when grouping with others and waiting for them to transfer zones. Zones still never feel empty (like they did in GW), and I'd much rather this than have to compete for every single mob tag and deal with incessant lag.

The graphics complaints are ridiculous. This is one of the most visually impressive games I've ever seen, and it's the apex of Bioware's excellent art style.

The gameplay, while *similar* in core mechanics to WoW, Rift, et al, works, and plays well. You feel powerful, skilled, and in control. Why people think it had to be different in ever aspect from other MMOs completely boggles my mind with the advancements and innovations it brings in other departments.(gameplay is tied to action RPGs for a reason, what the hell did you want, a first person shooter MMO? Wait for Planetside 2.) The moddable equipment is great, and gives you the option to keep a favoured aesthetic while leveling if you desire (and happen upon the gear). The companion system is excellent, but could use some tweaking for the AI and a few glitches. The crafting system is perfect, minimizing time spent on probably one of the most tedious aspects of MMOs yet still giving you enough control.

Flashpoints are fun and engaging, and I haven't had as much fun running an instance since being blown away by the expansive and epic BRD/UBRS/LBRS complex in WoW.

Light side and dark side choices are interesting and suitable (from what I've seen thus far), but I am disappointed by the lack of neutral relics (I have gone light side on my main character partially as a response to this).

It is definitely the newest gem of the MMO market, and one I see myself playing for much longer than most. Highly recommended.

Game is horrible, its nothing but a World of Warcraft clone only worse, the combat is not as deep as World of Warcraft and the story isn't even near as good as KOTOR or Mass Effect. Game is a big disappointment and the crappy voice acting the teeth cringing dialogue are the only things that set it apart from other games.

*WARNING* This is an RPG MMO, with intricate story telling, with you (and your friends) as the main characters and is meant to be played as such. So all of the complaints about Endgame content, because someone chose to grind their char to max lvl the same day the game was released, instead of actually having fun playing the game... this game is obviously not intended for you. On to the game review:
First, I would like to acknowledge the fact that SWTOR did borrow heavily from WoW. Which so happens is the most successful MMO out in the US. WoW however, had also borrowed heavily from other games, most notably EQ and Warhammer at the time and was far less stable then SWTOR is now.
2nd, SWTOR is fun. It blends the traditional Bioware SWKOTOR/MassEffect/DragonAage RPG as we have come to know, with multiplayer instanced zones and battles. These zones are a blessing and a curse. A blessing in the respect that you don't have to wait in line for hundreds of people who are killing the same boss over and over, plus a curse because the world seems (on the surface) less populated then it really is.
The story telling is great, for it is wonderfully engaging, well voice acted and even feels epic at times. Truly immersing you in to their StarWars universe and making you feel as if you play an important role. Light and Dark side moral choices and traditional Bioware companions/relationships are excellent additions as well (if not already expected).
3rd the original musical score is Epic and everything you would expect from any StarWars movie.
4rth I am not traditionally a tradeskill/farming type of player and I truly enjoy the companions doing all the tradeskill "legwork" for you. Both on and offline.
5th PVP still needs balance. They have some creative ideas for the PVP battles, like normalizing hit points and damage, so all lvls can compete. But class bias, chaotic zerg style of fights and dieing before you can even figure who hit you, seriously needs balancing. Mind you I have not seen maxed lvl pvp. So take that from a 30 something.
Lastly, there are a handful of minor bugs, that are noticeable, but not game shattering. Although, for some reason Bioware disabled AA during the beta and has not brought it back yet. So for now you either have to either put up with jagged edge graphics, or use Nvidia/ATI tools to force it until they patch it.
    My Rating for SWTOR: 8.2
Gameplay: 9 (-1 for WoW esque)
Story: 9 (Voice Acting and YOU are the main character, -1 for periodic obscure chat dialog choices)
Sound: 10 (Traditional StarWars sound effects mixed with truly movie worthy soundtracks)
Graphics: 7 (until they patch AA)
    PVP: 6 (Balance issues)

I played WoW off and (mostly) on for seven years. WoW was successful because the gameplay struck the right balance between complex and fun, while the content struck the right balance between casual and dedicated. As the Blizz people often said, they strove to make the game easy to learn but difficult to master. Similarly, there was a ton to do whether you wanted to level every alt or focus one or two toons in endgame. Or for the unemployed, all of the above. So far, SWTOR is the clearest heir to WoW's throne and actually improves on the general concept by the enhanced story aspect. But as many reviewers have mentioned, whether people will still be playing SWTOR in seven years from today depends on how well and how quickly (like w/in six months max) Bioware rolls out enough new casual and endgame content. While I am thoroughly enjoying the game now, and will probably play at least one or two alts with the status quo, I can see getting tired of the game faster than I did WoW. Some of this is not SWTOR's fault. Frankly, I'm older now and have less disposable time. But standing on the shoulders of giants in the MMO world comes with the price of diminishing returns. We may not have seen this precise movie before, but the genre is familiar. Bioware adopted and in some ways improved on the right formula, but SWTOR's ultimate longevity will require additional substance with innovation beyond greater than average story elements/voice acting. I for one did, and remember the sometimes painful and hair pulling experience that i had getting my first Orc rogue to 60. SWTOR is bringing back those old feelings for me, the game requires A bit more skill and finesse than WOW does currently. In fact one of the Biggest reasons i quit wow was because the game had become to easy, too predictable and was nearing the end of its life cycle. Dont think of SWTOR as a wow killer, think of it as breathing new life in the Genre, it is the first game that can truly challenge WOW in the mmo scene, and we all know that competition if anything will just make the two games better. I am giving the game a 9 for the level of polish that this game has at release, the amount of features it incorporates, the level of detail the developers put into the game among a number of other things. So far I am having a great experience, and at the end of the day that is all you should really want from an MMO.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons for you to disagree with me about that, but, again, it seems odd to me that so many people seem to think this is a terrible game. Is somebody trying to spike this game on metacritic for some reason, e.g., to protect WOW which needs its large player base because it's otherwise more than a little dated?

I've talked to at least 50 people about this game, many of them gaming veterans. It's split about 50-50 between people who agree with me and people who don't think this game is great, but think it's quite good. I haven't talked to a single actual person who has played the game and has an opinion even in the ballpark of all these negative reviewers. in fact, my 3 good friends who are guildmasters of a power guild in WOW are all abandoning their WOW accounts to start a new guild in SWTOR.

This game is a major step forward for the MMO genre, period. It combines the compelling story based gameplay of other Bioware games like Kotor and Mass Effect with the basics of the best in breed MMOs. I personally have tried every "wow killer" MMO that's come out since 2007, including Warhammer, Age of Conan, Aion, and Star Trek Online (tbh the only one I didn't play was Rift.) This game is really the only one, out of all of them, that has not only lived up to my expectations, but has surpassed them.

I wasn't really looking forward to this game initially; then I got into the beta. Once I actually played the game, I started counting the days until release. Each class has class only quests that tell a compelling story about that particular class. Additionally, unlike pretty much every other major MMO, you are presented with choices during these quests lines, much like the aforementioned Kotor and Mass Effect games. All in all this is a first rate, top notch game, both from the MMO and single player perspectives.

I'm honestly not really sure what the trolls are complaining about....if you like WoW and don't HATE Star Wars you'll enjoy this game, period.

Most criticisms revolve around TOR using MMO mechanics, which is ridiculous considering it's akin to griping about how an FPS might use guns and first-person view and deal with ammo and the like. MMOs have MMO mechanics, and no matter how much "prettying up" a developer does, the base mechanics will be what they are. Even my beloved sandbox MMOs must bow to this convention.

TOR takes what makes an MMO great and improves on it with a fine level of polish and updating. BW has managed to remove the dreaded grind (from crafting to quests), weave top-notch story-telling throughout every corner of the game, and bring the Star Wars universe to life.

I have been playing since the first day of Early Access. In spite of running into a few bugs (none of which are game-breaking), I have had an incredibly pleasant gaming experience. I have reached level 30 with a Sith Juggernaut and I actually care about my character and companions (well, Vette not as much, but that's what the shock collar's for :p).

Combat is very smooth and the animations superb. I love that you aren't merely striking at empty air but are shown actually striking your opponent and blocking. I love the fast-paced combat and I love the art style, which is also beautifully realized. The planets start from "respectably-sized beginner's box" to massive "Oh, God, I need my speeder right now." They only get larger as you go. The game packs content to the brim, from soloable missions to engaging group content (and there are built-in benefits to grouping in the form of things like social points).

I can't gush enough about TOR and if I do this will take all day to write (and I'd rather get back to playing so I'm going to wrap this up shortly). Yes, there are some minor hiccups, and thus this game doesn't get a perfect score. There are improvements to be made, but they will come in time (space combat--while passable, BW is already working to improve it--I'm looking at you). This is one of the most solid and fun foundations to an MMO I've experienced yet, and I can see really good things coming from this game with future content patches and expansions.

If you like MMOs, BW, Star Wars, or any combination of the above, I urge you to try this game. If not now, then sometime in the future. If a sandbox lover like me can come to love a themepark game (and this might well become the pinnacle of that sub-genre), well...I think a lot of people will be surprised going in.

In other words, you already are a hero by the time you start raiding which goes a long way to satisfy casual, solo and small group minded players.

Getting into raids is easier too. Not to bash WoW (which I did like), but this game doesn't require that you grind dozens if not hundreds of hours trying to get enough gear so that you can get into the significant raids where the meaningful story takes place. That endless grind and obscene demand of my time was what previously burned me out of other MMOs. Instead, you can jump into the raids right away.

Other great aspects of this game are:

    * Fully voiced dialogue with quest givers, companions, and others.

    * Morality choices giving light or dark side points. These choices do have some impact on your game experience with quests opening up while others close based on your prior choices.

    * Companions to talk to that give you quests, craft, and grow closer (or farther) to/from you depending on how you interact with them.

    * Stable launch. Have experienced very few bugs.

    * Fun and dynamic PvP system. Reminds me of WoW in this way and this is not a bad thing.

    * Smaller raid (8 or 16 man) sizes than most other MMOs which I like.

    * Difficulty slider for Flashpoints (Dungeons) and Operations (Raids) for the casual and hard core player alike.

    * A solid crafting system that allows one to not only create new items but to upgrade existing items so that one can keep weapons and armor for the duration of their game play experience if they so choose. In other words, the crafting system is deceptively deep.

    * Fantastic music that gives me a real sense of Star Wars immersion.

    CONS

There are a few cons and I would be remiss if I didn't mention them. Some of these are:

    * Long que waits on Sunday night for me. Both wait times lasted 25 and 30 minutes.

    * Small bug where I didn't get money from selling a few items on the auction system.

    * Coruscant is too big. Lots of running around that planet. They should've made the ground vehicle available to us allot sooner. * Inflexible and cumbersome UI. They need to allow the community to create their own mods for this.

Im just traveling space back and fort trying to rise from a slave to a dark lord of sith, this and many more is STWOR, im playing my story, im finally playing my character the way i want to, not bound anymore, to kill everything on sight to gather xp, and proceed to the next area with no real motive other than get another lvl up.
If u like multiplayer games, don't lose this one, i think we are not gonna see something like this for years to come.

Perhaps I enjoyed too much of wow as i played it for first 2 years, and wasnt willing to try any of the games that came after it, all advertised as potential wow killers, but bringing nothing new to the table, spelling their fast demise. I expected bioware will be a company to finally rearrange the niche so deeply carved by blizzard, and to revolutionise the concept that only works for wow on a global scale. Comparison with wow is unavoidable, as two game are so alike, you will feel like wow was reskinned, and that comes from someone who was away from wow for some time now. I truely feel that the art direction looks outdated and animation is nothing special, world is disjointed and instanced, quests are hit and miss, mostly miss, and combat system is seen numerous times, so i predict fast decline in player population when players figure out that there is nothing new on the table Expand

1 out of 3 game play (yes its a wow clone)
2 out of 3 Social/Multiplayer (people calling it a solo game full of **** they are not gonna do a flashpoint solo or a heroic unless they are over leveled for them same as any other MMO also the addition of social conversation choices adds a good little mix to it never know if your party member wins the role you might be about to kill a ton of innocents or end up having to go the long way round).
1 out of 2 for graphics (cartoony one or two bugs)
1 out of 2 customization very limited character image choice races seem to similar only 4 body types user interface not very customizable, on the plus the advance class system means not all consular are going to be the same you ll become a sage or a shadow knight becomes guardian or sentinel and this is before you start deciding on a talent tree to advance through.
    total 7 out of 10.

Now into some nitty gritty. As I said sometimes the quests can be predictable for instance training a militia you know is going to be a case of go out kill some things and return (boring and predictable) but at the same time you ll get some quests which will make you have to decide for instance recover some medical supplies for the army only to find out refugees are the ones who stole it and they need them you ll be presented with a social choice leave them with the refugees or take them back for the army this in turn has an effect on whether your light side or dark side points go up (some grey would be nice like splitting the supplies between the two). The voice acting is good and if your someone who actually CARES about story and reasons why your doing things you ll enjoy it if however your one of those people who plays games like wow and never even reads the quest because all that matters to you is what is the reward for doing it then it will be nothing more than annoying to you.
Gameplay is such a clone of all other previous MMO's its almost an insult the few features such as cover (limited to smuggler and imperial agent) add some interest but otherwise be prepared to be playing as you always have (oh yeah no auto attack which personally I feel is actually a good thing) I would have gave 0 out of 3 for this but truth is the system does work it might be boring but reality is the click buttons feature works (just as point and click works for fps I are not going to give an fps review 0 because its point and click why should I give tor 0 because its the same as the others).
Social would be 3 if not for the simple fact planets are instanced so you don't see lots of people sure you can chat with them and if you want you can chance the instance your on to another version of it very easily just bring up world map and click the pull down menu for it down the bottom right. Flashpoints are pretty good again the addition of rolling on decisions within them adds a nice element never forget how annoyed my first group was when I passed on the free money at the end of our first instance and won the roll meaning no one got the money to you this may seem annoying the point is it adds a new layer of social interaction your going to care about who you group with and such. Heroics also add to social interaction since your not going to solo these quests yourself they are designed for group each planet has around a minimum 3 or 4 of these and they each tell a story its not just a case of go kill this elite mob because well its an elite mob sure your going to be killing an elite mob but before your killing it your going to run around sabotaging his ship because he is using it to smuggle slaves.
Graphics are cartoony and have a few glitches I would not say it doe snot work the thing is its an MMO it needs a wide audience so of course its not going to be the best graphically and people who expect it are the same people who have blown thousands on their PC not everyone can afford to graphics score for me is out of 2 cause I don't prioritize them.

People saying not a WoW killer and scoring 0 saying just a WoW clone your not reviewing the game your comparing it to WoW there thats not a review.

Arguments about PvP being unbalanced are a joke. Classes will get adjustments in the coming weeks as it's been said by the devs. It's logical for some things to be "wrong" since there are games (no i won't mention which) that run for over 5 years and are still incredibly unbalanced.
All in all this game has massive potential. It looks very nice, the combat, in my opinion, is pretty fun and the story for each character is just plainly put, amazing. The planets are MASSIVE, apart from the two starting planets, which just get you into the story before getting started. To explore the whole of Tattoine or Alderaan you need at least a couple of hours. Quests are extremelly fun to do, as there are no "kill 20 of x" quests in the game. They do exist but ONLY appear as bonus quests in certain areas while you're doing your main quests and you can just skip them, as they disappear from your log when you leave.
If you've been thinking of playing an MMO, i suggest you give it a try. It's an amazing journey to take. Haters will hate as they say. When someone types in their review that "It's like WoW in space" and grades it with a "2" or worse, it just shows how bad fanboys can hurt a good upcoming game. If it's as good as wow, then why do you slap it down..?
It's far from perfect and that's why i give it an 8. But it's only the beginning and i'm having high hopes!

    Pros:
*Great story, fully voice and completely different for all classes
*Companions help you with crew skills which takes out the monotony and grind of leveling crafting/gathering skills
*PvP is extremely balanced. No one class can rule them all or survive a fight forever, aka Paladins in WoW
*PvP warzones are completely unique and fun to play
*Item customization/upgrades allow you to keep a weapon or piece of armor til end game if you choose and remain competitive , though, it requires work.
*Great graphics especially for an MMO
*Music and sounds in game are all consistent with the Star Wars universe you will often hear epic music during your fights and travels *Quests, flashpoints, and operations are really challenging. Bioware doesn't assume that you're a retard like Blizzard does and make everything so simple and easy that it's boring.

    Cons:
*Minor non-gamebreaking bugs, will likely be patched soon
*Server wait times can get a little long, Bioware needs to allow server transfers for characters
    *Instanced servers

ps. Don't listen to the haters, it's well worth the money.

I'm not sure what is confusing or misleading about that. The standard MMO mechanics are here that have been around for a decade; however, this game never advertised itself as anything different. If you go in expecting an MMO, it delivers and then goes beyond with immersing class stories and top notch voice acting. If you go in expecting something other than a traditional MMO, it falls short. People can argue and complain about the huge budget, subscription fees, grinding, leveling, skill trees, or whatever until the rest of us go deaf, but it won't change what this game is at it's core. It's a polished, accessible, and incredibly fun MMO. I've been playing since October and have seen the game evolve first hand. It's made amazing progress. There are still shortcomings for sure. The graphics lack intricate detail but most of it still looks pretty darn good and the world's are vast and varied. Space combat exists as a mini-game but it is good for what it is, and BioWare already confirmed it will be expanded. The UI is clunky, but functional. I've gotten used to it over time. The questing can start to wear you down, but it's paced very well and it seems that whenever I am just getting tired of the questing on a planet I am whisked off to a different one. What this game does right far outshines it's faults in my eyes. The stories are all interesting and packed with humor. They're a ton of fun. The combat is pretty standard skill rotation, but the animations are fluid and the sound of combat feels perfect. The sounds of blaster fire, explosions, and lightsabers crashing against one another was very well done, as was the music and voice acting. There are some odd moments in the voice acting, but overall it's really solid. Companions are a welcome addition too. I could go on and on because there is a plethora of content in this game and we're only at launch, which is the smoothest launch I've seen in 10 years and about a dozen different MMOs. BioWare did well with the Star Wars IP and their first foray into the MMO genre is a huge success in my opinion. I wouldn't rate it a perfect 10, more like an 8.5, but with all the stupid 0-2 ratings from people who try to judge the graphics compared to Crysis or Skyrim, or the combat system to Guild Wars 2 (which doesn't even have a release date yet!)... I have to give it a 10 to offset the shear amount of scared naysayer fanboys. In my honest opinion, this is an MMO worth checking out at least for the first free month. It doesn't bring many new ideas to the table, but the stories are worth the entrance fee, and the sci-fi atmosphere is a nice change from the elves and dwarfs of other fantasy lands. Expand

Space combat is enjoyable thus far, although pure flight-sim, skill-based players will be disappointed by the sense of the space combat being on rails. However, for the rest of us, it makes space combat approachable and not excessively frustrating. What strikes me about SW: TOR is that the game would be enjoyable even if I were playing single player. It doesn't use the crutch of "the only reason this is fun is because I'm playing with my friends" although to progress through certain parts, you really should group up with others. I personally like the "public areas" and "private" areas, which allows me to have my own story without 20 other people interfering. What is interesting is that I actually care about the story, which has not been the case in any of the other MMOs that I have played. I actually want to know what happens next, not the "push next until quest is in log" I have not reached the end game yet, so I can't comment on that yet. Perfect? No. Fun? Yes. People saying that it is a WoW clone are incorrect - it does not even do that well. I'm a massive star wars fan and have enjoyed most of Bioware's previous offerings from Baldur's Gate to Dragon Age. The only thing in this game worth experiencing is some of the story, and that is definitely a finite experience - my advice is to play one of Bioware's previous games that is written better and offers the same story-style experience without forcing you to suffer through a pale imitation of WoW's tired MMO gameplay model - read: WoW has much more fun gameplay than this. Smoother combat, more involved quest mechanics that occasionally engage you - use an item to put on a disguise, sneak into a camp and kill target. SWTOR is - Kill X mobs. Get X items from dead mobs. Pick up X items off the ground. Talk to X. Aaaand that's about it. Customization is atrocious. To have access to the Star Wars license and only have humans with facepaint is such a missed opportunity it's a crime. This isn't Star Trek where you're limited to humans with stuff on their face! There's a rich background with amazing races! Use them, players love them!

I rolled a bounty hunter, I wanted to use a rifle, or maybe a cool staffy pike thing. Hell, Bounty Hunters in the movies do it. Surely in a STAR WARS ROLEPLAYING GAME I should be able to do that, right? WRONG. You're a bounty hunter? You use pistols. Next. You're a spy? You use rifles. Next. Just lazy and inexcusable. Even in WoW, there are class limitations but within that you are free to pick! My warrior can use a mace, axe, sword, dagger, 2h versions of all those, bow, gun, etc! Pathetic when WoW lays your character's options low. Once players are finished with their stories, this game will not be able to stand up to the competition, period. There is one raid, and three battlegrounds. That's it for endgame, other than that I hope you like sitting in the cantina roleplaying because that's all there is to do. It's missing so many standard MMO features it's painful to think about! Day/night cycles are missing, NO GUILD BANK!?!? No guild progression system of any kind. Welcome back to 2003! Oh wait, SWG and games back then had those. Welcome to a bad MMO. No LFG, horrible pet AI (yes pets, that's all companions are), god-awful UI, no addon support, no swimming, nooo thanks.

Standard features in other MMOs like limiting who can roll need on what is absent, have fun the first time some sith ninjas your bounty hunter armor because his companion needs it, because it will happen many times. I really hope GW2 comes out soon.

This game is not perfect, they did not innovate in the gameplay department they took a working system (which is something they have said they were going to do from the begining) and applied their story telling techniques to it. The gameplay is reminiscent of dozens of other games before it, there are limitations to the UI BUT what it does bring is an actual story. WoW was never compelling because there was no worth to your character it was a collection of OCD traits for hording collecting compiled in to an avatar. SWTOR creates characters where your decisions reflect on your story, you have a real weight behind your character and there is actual connections with the other players on your "Stage" the complaints it's "Zoned" and a "lobby" game are not really well founded. The game is instanced but it's easy to jump between them and given the immediate load it's probably best they did this as it saved them a lot of server trouble.

It boils down to this, if you like Bioware stories, if you like Star Wars' Expanded Universe, if you like feeling like you're actually achieving something with your character you will enjoy this game. If you are looking for something to "reinvent the genre" go elsewhere.

Yes, it has few weaknesses but i'd rather mention couple of bugs, texture popping or full servers (even website), than bashing it for not being the 100% original game. Classes- You will not find a better mix of classes for creative, not your typical roles that we have used for the past 15 years
Zones- Very lifelike, cities that are well..... very large like cities. Tatooine, Corescant, Nar Shadaa, gorgeous and large.
Companions/Crafting- Best system in the world especially for those dads like me who dont want to take precious gaming time to sit infront of a forge, your companion crafts for you as well as gather materials.
Size- This game is the largest MMO I have ever encountered in sheer SIZE, planets are very large and beautiful.

People who say the graphics are terrible know nothing about graphics, the amount of polygons in each character is amazing, lighting, the amount of color put into objects very very impressive, this game will look great 5 years from now because of its style.

If you are thinking about getting this game it is a MUST have.

This was supposed to be a great game, but Bioware fall short on this, here is why: Lazy

This is perhaps the biggest misstep. Bioware and Evil Arts cut corners by licensing the HeroEngine instead of developing their own. Now, as a developer professionally, I would normally say "Good for them," but it is painfully clear not much money went into developing this engine into something for a AAA MMO. As of 9/2011, the engine still does not support multiple cores nor a 64-bit client. Even WoW supports multiple cores and a 64-bit client.

This is sloth, and the fact that BW/EA did not bother to invest in the backbone of this game. Players will burn through your content and dialog. And when they get into the routine of playing the repetitive parts of the game, they will really start to notice how little was put into this engine.

    Ignoring your users

The community management sucks. The interaction is canned corporate responses. There is no detail, the only admitted problem is Taris and that's only because quite literally hundreds of players have fallen into a figurative black hole on that world. This is a poor way to treat your community. To treat them like children. As if giving them information is something they could not handle. Your customers are not asking you to cater to their every whim (well, most of them), but they do enjoy having information that allows them to make informed decisions... like... do they actually need to upgrade, or do you have a really crappy, inefficient engine that you'll eventually patch and do we just suffer or spend our money to get new hardware. Stuff like that. This smacks of pride.

    Being greedy

Another major misstep here was the revocation of a grace period and only reinstating a small span of time after the community set you on fire for it. Given the insanity of the postal services during this time of year, the seven day grace period would have shown forethought and consideration. Can't let those players play an extra week! They could be giving us money instead!

Given the fact that this is EA, if the cost of maintaining a viable player base, due to initial craptacular implementation or lack of project planning, costs more money, they are going to court the players until they at least make ends meet so they can save some face in front of the investors.

One of the reasons WoW did so well was that Blizzard had all its eggs in that basket. SCII and D3 were not coming out for a long, long time and SC:Ghost was scrapped. They had to stick it out and make it profitable and look at it now. Be sure, if EA can figure out the numbers to make their enterprise more profitable that does not involve SWTOR (in the short term), they'll cut this project quick.

    Fostering anger in their community

This one is on the community management again. They foster this environment. Poor details, poor handling of users, poor customer service. Closing duplicate threads with the snarky "Go here" as if to hide the sheer number of pissed off people. It all contributes to the community's anger at how this is being mishandled. Eventually, that anger is going to translate into people not staying past the free 30 days.

    WoW Clone, Family Guy Style

This game is WoW without all the bells in whistles. It starts out sleeker than WoW, but is missing things that are pretty integral to WoW's success during the end of Vanilla and Burning Crusade. A solid end-game, both PvE and PvP. Better community tools like a group finder (I mean a group finder, not a cross-faction hullabaloo) and so forth. Three years and 100 million dollars for a watered down WoW clone with an exhaustible story and thoroughly abused IP.

    Engorging your servers

I chalk this up to servers. Yes, everyone has launch issues, but given the fact that they put us through that painful EGA, you would think they would have put in the infrastructure to migrate your character to a different one, put in some server caps to prevent qs and everything else. Nope, not happening. So instead they have engorged themselves on players and we are all suffering for it.

I understand that perhaps not all of the quests are fetch quests, but due to the very nature of MMOs, it seems to be the case for the most part. And while Mass Effect introduced the dialog wheel, Dragon Age 2 soured my opinion of it permanently, as it seemed to angle you into inevitable conflicts instead of allowing you to craft your way through them with at least some illusion of choice. You know, like an RPG. And perhaps saying that Revan was "retconned" was over stepping my boundaries a bit. Perhaps I should say that their handling of his character, arguably the most important in their series, is very poor. I mean, they're only writing the book so they can force Revan in to this game. The fact that he was suddenly "being controlled by a Sith lord the whole time" is a bit weak and destroyed all hope of getting any deeper plot threads than "You are Sith or Jedi, there is no in-between." So, Revan was being controlled all along? No more trying to strengthen the Republic through war so it would know how to handle future conflicts, walking the line between Jedi and Sith and defying all masters before ultimately going off to fight the true Sith that may soon plague all the galaxy--not because he is a Jedi or Sith, but because it is the correct thing to do for the salvation of all species? Nope, he was being indoctrinated the whole time by Sith and just mindlessly fought the Republic and just happened to lose, all in the name of some other Sith Lord.

While we're on the topic of Revan, it really steams me that he's even in the game. This is not to provoke anger, I'm asking honestly because I would like to know: Is there any reason given by the book that he's still alive centuries after his time? The fact that you have the option to kill him at as a MID-RANGE level is mind boggling. Showing his face and giving him a voice and otherwise peeling away all sense of mystery around Revan just feels like such a bummer to me.

And maybe species all looking the same is nitpicking, but I still feel like Bioware is just being lazy when it comes to this. After setting the bar high game after game, they just decide to recolor humans, throw some spikes or headtails on and call it a different species? I mean, look at this. If their heads were blocked out, it would be impossible to even tell these races apart.
http://www.wikiswtor...layable_species In short: This is a shoddy attempt to steal WoW's audience and it's so called "Voice acting", it's golden ticket to being more than the average MMO, is poorly written and even more poorly acted.

This is a solid and fun MMO that repeats something that were done before in other MMOs like WOW (quest structure and to some level combat) but provides a different game as well through other elements (Storylines, voice acting, and to some degree combat). If something is done well why not take elements of that and reapply them? People's expectations are so ridiculously high if you believe this is a disaster of a game. Did you expect to log in and get to play 20 different races, 30 different classes, and have graphics that resembled a Lucas Arts film? Did you ever think that perhaps the best method, and the one every MMO game uses is to start off small and work up to things like additional races and dungeons. Also note to people, WOW did not create the click a button on your UI back and forth combat structure nor did it create the quest structure of kill this or go fetch that. Games like Everquest and Ultima did this long before. If you take the game for what it is, it is highly enjoyable. Right now the game is more about the journey with storylines and morality points than power leveling to end game content which is all WOW is. You cannot put the cart before the horse. Did you want Bioware to come out with 15 different end game raids right away when most people won't even get to 50 for awhile? No MMO has ever done that and it makes no sense. There will be updates with new end game content as time progresses and more and more people get there. Combat to me is fun and fast paced. Is it ground breaking? No, but that doesn't mean it is not fun. If this game remains the same in a year than people have room to complain but for now you can't get mad because it doesn't have all the refined elements that a 6 year old game like WOW now has (does anyone remember vanilla WOW? It was a lot of fun but not exactly earth shattering either). Also everyone assumes that this game has set out to destroy WOW by being so much better that it robs WOW of its fan base. Maybe the game wants to offer something that appeals to casual WOW players and a new fan base of people who are tired of playing a WOW game whose sole purpose is to get to end game content so you can raid for 6 hours with arrogant, rude, asses, who act like the rulers of their little fiefdoms because their dps meter is higher than yours. It is a just a game people and if you relax and enjoy it, a very fun one. Stop expecting it to be a world shattering work of art that changes the cultural landscape. If you are a fan of Star Wars and MMOs this is a very fun game you should definitely try it. If you are a 3 time a week raid leader on WOW or someone who believes video games should be on the same artistic level as a Thomas Pynchon novel then save your money. Expand

They hold the 30 days of "free" time along with any forums access hostage if you don't have a payment ready. Now, onto the game itsself. - No macro system. You just cannot make any macros at all, no way, no how. No mouse-over heals, nothing.

You just cannot make any macros at all, no way, no how. No mouse-over heals, nothing.
    - No addon system (not that I'm an addon fan, I hate them actually). This method of game playing is not implimented and honestly, I doubt it ever will be.
What the lack of these two things mean is - there will probably be far too few healers in the future, especially in raids. There are a LOT of people who cannot function adequately without at least mouseover healing. -Uninspired combat. Sure, there is no auto-attack which is a plus, but there's also zero innovation outside of this, if you can call this innovation at all. It's mostly like every other MMORPG fight mechanic which has existed for the past 10 years or more. This isn't 1997.
-No user interface customization. You can't move the chat box or anything else, which means you either keep it too small to read well, or you have to deal with it encroaching on your left Quickbar.
-No autogrouping to run instances. Expect to see a LOT of "LFG for !".
-Lethargic character creation. Do you enjoy looking like everyone else (including NPCs)? No? Too bad.
Rift, Champions Online, and a massive number of other companies have very in-depth character creators and have come out long before this game. This is 2011, not 2000. There simply is no longer any excuse for slacking here.
-Very small race selection. This is a game based in a universe where there are supposedly thousands of aliens. Even the movies had more than nine. If you count Human, Cyborg, Miraluka and Rattataki as looking so similar that they're all Human dirvatives, the choice is even smaller. -The entire game is one huge instance. What this means is that say you're on Ord Mantell. There will be three or four copies of this same exact world on the server. Most of the time you can see people chatting, but do not expect to see those same people in the game, necessarily. While there will be a given number of people in a given instance, the game world still feels dead and somewhat empty. You often do see others running about, but it just feels too sparse. If someone needs help and you group with them, it's up to you or them to figure out which instance the other is on.
    -Overall-
The game is expansive, it has more than one well-known name behind it. However, it also feels rushed and half-assed in some parts. The subscription model seems backwards and bent on driving customers away, not welcoming them in. I think BioWare really screwed the pooch on this game and released it far too early. Why they would do that is beyond anyone's guess. This is not a new company who just popped up last year and decided to create a new Star Wars IP. These people should know better. Because they do no know better obviously, the game is feeling more and more like a World of Warcraft clone only there to make a cash grab.

Unfortunately, this is not the case. One of the major features that was hyped since day one was SWTOR's fully voiced cast. Although the voice acting sounds like a nice addition (and it is), that's about the only plus. Character creation sounds like it would be a pulling point of a game based off the Star Wars franchise, yet Bioware has managed to make it the opposite. Star Wars has dozens of unique races, and Bioware has managed to incorporate none. Want to play a Wookie? Too bad. An Ithorian smuggler? Not a chance. A Rodian bounty hunter? Try again. But, have faith, Bioware has still included some other races: a blue human, a green human, a human with head tails, and, finally, a blind human. Oh, the variety. The actual gameplay is worse. Bioware doesn't even try to hide the WOWesque combat; it even mimics the old hotbars and menus. Combat is essentially press A to win, or, because Bioware likes variety, press A then B two times to win. Player vs. Player combat is the same formula. Like others have said, SWTOR doesn't differ from the standard MMO combat roles. You have tanks, healers and even damage-dealing roles. For some that might not be particularly disappointing, but I came into SWTOR looking for a revision of the tired system. I mean, it's a tad ridiculous when the Sith have their own DARK heal. I thought the Sith were supposed to be ruthless killing machines, not tempered healers. Anyways, quests are alternatively a burden. In a Bioware game, one expects story and characters to be a saving grace, but SWTOR somehow manages to abuse the same kill-ten-boars tradition. It's a pity considering Bioware has managed to lure in several big names in voice acting, and their talents are wasted in boring, terribly written dialog. There are some nice moments during questing though, where quests take a more dynamic approach, but these moments are too far and in between that they hold no real value. All in all, SWTOR had so much potential that could have been easily capitalized, but Bioware was so eager to cash in on the Star Wars franchise that any potential greatness was lost. Instead of the Star Wars epic that was presented to us prior to release, we have a run of the mill MMORPG smothered in decent voice acting. Expand

    - Even though they copied Warcrafts mechanics they left out some of the better things it implemented such as dual spec, i hope you dont enjoy playing both pve and pvp with the same character.
    - Because of a certain exploit that made it through beta (pvp exp exploit) people reached max level 2 days into playing the game (and about 5 days before the 'official' release''
    - PvP is a buggy mess, with insane amounts of lag if more than 25 players are on your screen, with very little tactical play other than spam all your buttons while they hit all their buttons.
    - It currently has ONE raid, that is its endgame, which isnt really spectacular seeing as people have reached max level 2 days in, nowhere near enough content. This raid was completed 3 days in, with half its 'hard mode' bosses downed allready too.
    - Completely destroys the lore from the KoToR game series

this isnt even mentioning the lack of race choice (all are reskinned humans), if you want to play a warcraft clone you might aswell just go play warcraft or Rift, because this game is a huge waste of money.

The game shares similar features with other games but has a fresh feel to it. The sound is great the graphics are good and the gameplay is fun. If you like themed MMOs, Star Wars, or Mass Effect, you will likely enjoy this game. Personally this game is a 8/10 but it gets a 10 from me to offset the fools who give it a 0.

There are good and not so good elements to SWTOR at launch, and I'll try to list out the pros and cons below this general statement. Overall, SWTOR is a fun experience to start, and is familiar to anyone playing the run of the mill MMO these days in the interface. Some (OK, honestly MOST) design choices are extremely clunky and poorly implemented, however offer a glimmer of hope in the spirit of what they were trying to achieve. Other things, like the layout of quest objectives, planet design, and items that I consider to be pure time sinks are not well received by me, and ultimately will turn me off from this game in short time. The voice over gimmick gets tired after about level 20-25, and while it was a great idea, again it was not pulled off in execution in my opinion because it becomes a tedious chore for all but the main story quests after some time into the game. Also, it feels like the voice over addition severely gimped the development of the actual gameplay itself, and SWTOR does not feel like a complete game, let alone polished and ready for release by any stretch. In my opinion, the last 5 years have seen many MMO's come and go, and the bar has been set higher than was achieved here, and I agree that it feels like a regression in a certain respect from other offerings in the genres.

Here are some things that I really like about the game:
The companion idea - Having a useful companion like a pet from other MMO's for each class is a great idea, and overall is implemented well.
Companion questing/skills - Again, great idea and overall implemented well.
Companion able to be sent on errands to sell your junk, again great idea, but not novel considering there are at least 2 other active MMO's that have this functionality.
Having a ship that has customization options - great implementation and necessary to build upon KOTOR legacy.

Things that ultimately will push me away if not addressed and fixed:
-Design of the instances make it feel like you are isolated and either alone, or with very few people. This is not worthy of a subscription in it's current state with the limited social interaction and sharded state of the servers. Oddly enough, even though the game is sharded and feels empty often times you will get to a quest node, or assassination target and have to wait for a respawn or reset.
-Conversely, there are queues on many servers at launch, and it is very disappointing to wait in an extended queue to get into what feels like an empty game.
-Poor UI Design. No options to move, customize, or resize. Pop up windows are exclusive in some cases and feels very clunky as a interface. Positioning of some windows is just utterly silly.
-No options for macros or addons.
-Poor design of the game in general. I'm talking about the quests and nature of running back and forth 800 gazillion times for rewards, which I thought the industry standard was set better years ago. Also, stairs leading to nowhere, completely empty buildings, and a almost useless navigation system with the current map and location finders.
-Lack of quest options and dynamics. All quests are basically go kill x of these, loot x of those, or click x of these. Where are the usable objects like turrets? Dynamic environment changes? Mount quests? Again, the bar is set higher then this game has achieved.
-Loading screens for new zones is another thing that is odd to see in this day and age.
-Getting stuck. If your game has a need for a /stuck command that I've personally had to use a dozen times in a week after 5 years of development, something is clearly wrong.
-Lack of Avatar customization options. Character creation is very disappointing, and again I thought the bar was set higher.
    -Poor PVP options.
-More time sink items than a bantha has fleas. No sprint until lvl 10, no mount until lvl 25, again I thought we were past this type behavior.
-No voice over IP options. Again, it feels like a regression.
-Questing on a rail, lack of replayability. Each class has a separate story line, but eventually that's used up, and the side quests are very tedious and not unique.

I'm sure I could nitpick and find more, but these are the glaring items that will ultimately cause me to quit playing this game. For now, I'm engrossed by each character class story and I sincerely hope that many of these items get addressed and fixed or redesigned.

I score the release of the game a 2 because I feel like the companions are done so well that it warrants a couple points on it's own, all other aspects need some serious rework for this game to not end up in the F2P trash heap.

If you read a really low review here, they are a WoW fanboy trying to discourage people from picking up the game. The ones I've seen are complaining about extremely trivial things because they obviously feel threatened. The fact of the matter is tat this game is a very fun game, and you should try it yourself before listening to the "brilliant" people trying to attack the game.

Well, this game seems to have drawn some polarity. Let me add some reality to the mix here.

First, anyone that has rated this game in the red zone is being highly unrealistic. They may not like the game for this reason or that reason, but it is certainly not a sub-5 game by any stretch of the imagination. There are plenty of MMOs out there that are far worse. Second, comparing this game to WoW is like comparing Battlefield 3 to Doom...other than the familiar mechanics and game play at the most superficial levels, they don't play or feel the same at all.

On to the game itself. I've played in a few rounds of beta and have been playing in the early entry. My past history includes 6+ months (typically much more) of WoW, LoTRO, Rift, CoH / CoV, and Aion with some playing of Guild Wars, Warhammer, Age of Conan and Champions Online.

The opening cutscene is very well done and does set the mood for the game very well. The character creation is fairly minimal with some races only being available based on class and/or faction selection. Customization is limited to a handful or two of pre-set conditions around hair style, facial expression, scars / tattoos, and general character size. This is pretty standard for any MMO that uses the armor / clothing pieces as the primary character appearance.

Starting with you new character introduces the next major cutscene which is also well done and sets the stage for your character's storyline. Each faction / class combination truly feels unique with their storylines even though the starting areas (levels 1 thru 10) are shared (e.g. both jedi types - knight and consular - have the same starting area). The story is the primary separation between SWTOR and other MMOs at this stage. The stories are well done with voice acting all along the way. If you are not particularly interested in following the story, then you may want to pass on the game since you are missing out on 1/2 the experience.

Interaction with NPCs take 2 flavors: Quest interactions which are all story based and voice acted (some are just for your class, others are for anyone in the zone) or trainers / vendors.

Combat follows standard MMO conventions with various cc, damage, heal, and anti-cc abilities. Cooldowns are put appropriately on abilities that have higher damage, heal or cc effects. Several abilities are conditional on the status of the target (e.g. stunned). You will find rotations that are far more effective than others, and as you get up in levels, you will find that you can't rely on a single spam ability that will get you thru...and optimizing your rotation allows you to keep progressing with minimal breaks.

Specialization gives you access to two different set of trees based on your class. The trees support tank, dps, or heals. Notably, the trees that support tank give access to good damage as do the trees that supporting healing. Trees that are heavy dps tend to give access to better cc.

PvP is decently supported and reasonably well balanced. Queues tend to pop quickly since all levels play together (levels 10 thru 50) with players below level 50 powered up to do competitive damage. Since lower level players lack many abilities, there are more struggles, but I've been able to take out higher level opponents on my lower level toons, so my impression of PvP is that balance is better than most other MMOs I've played. The maps are rather interesting changes to the standard capture the flag approach with a game of Huttball with allowable passing to other players on your side being the most popular.

Crafting is pretty unique in this MMO. Rather than gathering yourself, your crew does the work for you. You send the crew out to gather or craft and they will be unavailable until their mission / crafting is complete. You are able to send them out while working in a group on an instance as well. There is a good selection of crafting / gathering skills to select from, so it makes for some interesting choices. You are limited to 3 selections per character.

Most of the game world is shared. Instancing is restricted to your class story line quests or group instancing (I know some of the reviews make it sound like the game world is as heavily instanced as Guild Wars, but that is definitely incorrect). There are some group "required" areas / instancing even in the starter areas, so you do get introduced to grouping early on. Even servers labeled as "Light" are full of activity as a result.

Overall, the game is lively and fun. The classes are interesting approaches to a sci-fi MMORPG that makes for a very capable MMO. If you don't enjoy the RPG aspect, you probably won't find anything more compelling than other MMO games, but it is still a first rate game worth a try.

The game is the worst MMO I have ever played, and the worst RPG too. Bioware needs to step up their game. After Dragon age 2 and SWTOR, and with Mass Effect 3 looking more like Gears of War every time we see it, it looks like Bioware have lost their touch, something that is painfully obvious every second of gameplay.

Howevver, being a big fan of the SW franchise since I went to see the original film when I was just 10 years old, I had followed SWTOR since it's announcement, but purposely didn't apply for beta, knowing that since SW:G, I have participated in almost a dozen MMO betas which then end up disappointing me at release...............Damn Metacritic for not allowing paragraphs............................Anyway, onto the new game. So far I have tinkered around with Bounty Hunter (Merc) and Sith Warrior (Marauder). Both of the opening planets and areas for the classes are well fleshed out and keep your interest. I can see how some fans of traditional MMO gamers will get frustrated with the fact that Bioware have taken the time to have full cut scenes with literally every mission giving NPC, and I can envisage hundreds of people constantly clicking there space bars to progress the conversation just to get to the end. For me, I'm in between. I like the cut scenes, but they can become overbearing at times, especially if you get to a new NPC zone and speak to two or three NPC's in a row just to find that it's taken nearly 15 minutes jus to get the missions in your journal......................... The missions themselves are pretty generic fodder, with the sporadic inclusion of class missions that at least provide you with your own instance to work through............... The flashpoints (group instances) so far are well done, and the dialogues with NPCs include a new mechanism for MMO's with each member picking their own responses, and "rolling" to use it in the story, resulting in bonus social points (another new mechanism) if you win the roll. These social points can then be used to buy things at various vendors....................................... Onto crafting. I can see how some players might find the crafting system a little daunting at first, but it becomes simple as you get throught it, if somewhat expensive to progress if you try to do it in the starter zones where not many resource spots exist resulting in you sending off your NPC companion to take part in virtual missions that result in them gathering resources for you. Reverse engineering various crafted, looted and purchased items will provide you with some return on the cost of doing so, and also will provide you with random schematics to boot........................................There is a lot more I could go into, but it would take too long. Overall I am rating the game at 8/10. I was hoping for a bit more, but the game has only just been released so that score could well go up (or down) with Bioware's support. I am still fearful of how the game will progress but that is due to the EA branding, which I don't have a lot of faith in as they have a history of grabbing money now and not giving a s**t later (allegedly). Time will tell, and for now, I'll give them that time. Expand

Firstly I am a huge SW fan and so TOR was something I have been looking forward to playing for a long time indeed. I have played it to level 26 and the first two days were amazing, I was loving the combat and the space ships and space station. The controls are a little clunky but those things can be ironed out so no problem.

The zones in SWTOR are actually planets, you have to fly your own ship to the planets when you move from zone to zone and I personally love this immersion. The problems start when you get out your spaceship and realise that each planet is a series of instanced boxes, you literally can not jump on your speeder and ride around the entire zone, it's dreadful. I was on tatooine and pointed my speeder south and tried to explore, I hit an invisible barrier after 500 yds WTF???

So with the shocking zones comes the shocking world PvP, there is none basically, I have not seen a single Empire player on any of the three contested planets I have been questing. And on that bombshell I will end this review, there is no point discussing the other aspects of the game because without huge populated worlds to explore and world PvP this game imo does not qualify to be called an MMO. It's certainly not massive that's for sure.

Another half-done game release this year. Controls are unresponsive and the overall experience is pretty generic. I've expected more from this company, at least for this price here they charge from us. Priceperformance-ratio is pretty horrible. Never again, you failed me too much.

And none of the conversations felt anything like conversations, they just felt like two voice actors reading from a script. Hugely disappointing, especially when the game really has nothing else going for it that isn't already provided by WoW, LOTRO, EQ2, Rift, and other such games of this style. Expand

Bioware has set a new standart.

In my humble opinion BioWare managed as the first company to create a real mmoRPG.
The story telling elements inside are so huge and well done, that you realy feel like being in the world of StarWars in the age of Kotor. You don't feel like being dragged and led through quest hubs to level, you don't feel the "burdon" of leveling itself, it just flows through naturaly due to the great storyline, individualy designed by your choices (light side/dark side, class, good/bad decisions). This system leads to an interesting character development besides getting new skills and skillpoints to better your skills.

Furthermore BioWare managed with their last Beta-Weekend and the long headstart to create the smoothest MMO-Start ever seen. You have some queues, but thats better than having empty servers and being forced to merge pretty soon - besides that the game runs pretty fluent and there are no big "nono-issues" included in the final version. Staying at the technical side i realy enjoy the graphic engine - not it's not state of the art, it's the heroes engine, but thats a good choice. This engine is well developed and reached a certain quality level you need to ensure a bug free running mmo. if you have a look at games like Age of Conan, creating a new engine, and new problems you realy realy look forward to have a solid gameplay and graphic engine with relativly low requirements. Furthermore the engine suits perfectly the kotor scenario, like the slight anime characteristic suits the TV-Series (CloneWars) and the Kotor gaming series as well. It feels like it was totaly the right choice.
One negative aspect of that engine is the current ui and the character creation. But both issues are on the priority list quiet important for BioWare and we can expect better options there in the next big patches.

Another great idea is the companion system, having the chance like in Kotor to learn the stories of up to 5 companions (per class) and being able to interact with them offers even more possibilites to go deeper into the storytelling, furthermore they act as your pets being realy tremendously helpful during your fights and leveling process.
A matter of taste is the companion related crafting system. I personaly like it - the hardcore crafter will dislike it, but you will send your companions for crafting missions. You let them craft, "waste" their time and be able to continue with the things your are currently doing while improving your process. I realy appreciate it, but as I said not everybody will.

    PvP:
PvP has a new aspect for the MMO-sector. It has (not on the open pvp planet ilum) a level equaliser. It buffs your HP and your skills to the highest level. So it is theoreticaly possible to fight lvl 10 vs. lvl 50. Theoreticaly because as a lvl 10 you are laking some skills and may be equipment, but you have a realistic chance to compete to a certain point. The good thing about it is that it is easier to play with your mates no matter what level they are and there will be pvp games going on during the level period, because the field of possible competetors is way wider than in usual mmos.
The maps are pretty much known as Domination and Assault/Defence. What's new is the Hutt Ball. A quiet funny pvp map where you are able to play with the enemy faction as well. It's just a fun map, but it's well done... i won't write so much about it cause there are alot of videos out there.
The PvP itself feels smooth. On the one hand the tanks and healers are not as useless/boring as they are often in other pvp systems, cause for example the tank can use his taunt to reduce damage in pvp and the fighting time seems to be quiet good. It's not that you have to fight through epic fights all the time.. it's not taking hours to one-on-one, but on the otherhand there is no one-hitting-slaughter-class in the game.

Coming to the PVE aspect like flashpoints. I don't know how well done the raids are yet (I am lvl 40), but the flashpoints for groups are cool though. Some of them are again realy story driven and your decisions make an impact on how the dungeon is going on, some of them are straight forward pve flashpoints. Nearly all the bosses have abilites you have to take care of, so if you are not way overleveled there is no real tanks and spank for the most situations.

For the last point before the conclusion I will cover the world design.
The ones who know StarWars will realy enjoy the world they will be dropped in. The detail and the fauna is amazingly well done... again they have gotten the maximum out of the engine to get the right atmosphere to the game.

As a conclusion I would highly recommend you to at least try the game. As a StarWars fan you will be amazed, but even as a casual MMO-Player you will have fun and enjoy. Give it a shot and don't be afraid, because of some people having to "flame" and "down-rank" the game so hard.

Firstly, the huge world is actually there to explore. What I mean by this is that you don't just seat around in the Capital, waiting for dungeon que to pop up and just kill yourself out of boredom in the process. In Swtor, you have to look for groups the old way and there are actually people to communicate with. For me, the large world that you actually have to explore which puts you to work with other people is the foundation of any MMORPG. The game doesn't force you to choose one way by giving one choice too much advantage though. What I like about Swtor is that you can truly play either way: Solo playing the story is satisfying enough but Group play feels very natural and fun. Many instances are positioned in the world so naturally that you often don't realize they're actually dungeons meant for a group of people.

Secondly, the epic amount of immersive story telling. What I hated about Cataclysm is the destruction of good immersive story telling and lore in favor for convenient and easy play. In Swtor though, the game is built upon story telling, characters, and lore. Although admittedly the storytelling is not quite as good as other great Bioware single player titles, its quality and quantity are far above any other MMORPG. All 8 classes have different fully voice-overed stories as well so the replayability is amazing. It very much feels like playing buffed up version of DA:O with other people. Also the quests, while not too innovative tbh, actually put you to walk a lot. I know some people hate this but I really welcome this. If a game is too easy the experience is very forgettable, like in Cataclysm. Lastly, the classes aren't pigeon holed into set roles in favor for 'balance'. What I really like about classic RPG games is that the classes play very uniquely and each class has its clear specialty and weakness. There are things that you just can't do as effectively, but there are also things only you can do. This is why teaming up with other classes is so fun. WoW used to be like this, but since the arrival of DK who could do just everything including melee DPS, ranged DPS, AOE, Pet, Dot, Tank, DW, etc, every other class begun to be generalized as well and since Cata, there are effectively only 3 classes of tank, healer, and dps. You only get to choose what kind of 'theme' your character is, really. I think Swtor classes are very well made, built around their own unique strength rather than having just everything.

There are some things that I don't like, however. Firstly, the game needs a bit more polishing imo. The experience is not as epic as other great Bioware titles. I can understand though since the amount of content this game offers is so huge. It doesn't mean they aren't great either. It's just not as epic as I expected from the company that produced so many great titles. Still much better than DA2 imo. Also, while the music is quite good, none are that memorable. Yes. They all feel very Lucas Artistic but games like this need some more memorable music imo. Such music gets people attached to the game. For example, I still hear the SW choir sound whenever I think about WoW, and I hear the 'Vigil' music whenever I think about Mass Effect 1. I hear the DA:O title music when I think about the game. I haven't found such moment in Swtor yet(except for the opening text movie music maybe? lol), which is quite unfortunate. Lastly, Bioware took it too safe. I love both Blizzard style and Bioware style but I'm not sure If I like the Bioware style trying to be like Blizzard too much. All of the Bioware games had their unique, fun skill system, class system, combat, and so on. Why not go for them instead of copying WoW? I understand that WoW had copied many previous RPG systems as well but the core gameplay was in line with Blizzard's own previous titles. I wonder how epic Swtor would have been if Bioware pushed their own style just a little bit bit more.

Despite its drawbacks, Swtor is an epic MMORPG. I know the word 'epic' is so overused theseday but trust me, the game is epic in many ways. It's just that the game is too epic that some of the details feel a bit missing. Also the similarities with WoW can be both good and bad depending on the player. To me, though, although some of the EA feel spoils the game here and there, the game in general feels as if Blizzard and Bioware had a baby and his appearance(gameplay) resembles Blizzard and the personality(storytelling) feel similar to Bioware.

I usually dont write any reviews, but after seeing this game gain so many unfair negative reviews, some from people, who have probably never even played the game and are just trying get approvement from **** or some other communtity that hates everything fun, Ive decided to give my honest opinion on the game.

So after playing this game to level 20 on my bounty hunter, im finally ready to give my first impression on the game. Ive had many great adventures on that journey, both alone and in groups. And i've still got more than half of the leveling content and the end game to see.

So firstly I will talk about the gameplay. For those of you who have played any MMO since the success of World of Warcraft, the gameplay mechanics will probably feel instantly familiar. However i'm much more in control of my own character since i have to perform all the attacks by myself, even the auto-attack. The UI was a bit too flashy for my liking at first, but after a while I've gotten used to it. It works very well and has everything important in your reach. Its also pretty well customisable through ingame settings. Though i would like the option to make it more simplistic, and remove all the uneccessary decorations from it. There are plenty of great improvements to the usual gameplay. The companions add a great new twist into the game. Cause now you can play better while alone, even if you want to be a tank or a healer. And you can complete 4 man quests with just 2 players and 2 companions. Of course if there are for example 3 players, you can only summon 1 companion so it is in no way overpowered. The companions also help you in many ways, such as you can send them to sell your grey items to vendor if you run out of space or let them do the crafting for you while you are on your adventures (I especially like this system). Then they have spiced up the normal gameplay with fun elements, as your own spaceship and spacecombat.

Now about the gameworlds. They are huge and immersive. And beatiful. I did not like the first planet I was on, but every planet ive been since has been great. I love how there is plenty of group quest-content inserted into each planet. The only downthing I have with these big planets, is that it may be a bit boring to run from one place to another before you get your first mount. Also the conversations and the story is a great improvement from other mmos.

All the instances Ive been to have been fun, and immersed you in great adventures through the means of story, music and proper pacing. The difficulty's been about right too. Few wipes but not too challenging to make the group quit in the middle of run. Bioware has also been actively patching the game and it has already improved in many ways since its launch, wich was only a few days ago. I think all players who enjoy mmos should try this out. In its current state the game is a solid 8/10, but it has been the best mmo launch i have been part of, and the I see a great future for this game so ill give it 10/10 just for the potential, and to counter all those unfair, biased reviews.

LucasArts generally exercised greater quality control of Star Wars games than most licensed properties receive, though that didn't necessarily translate into titles that were actually good. I've played a few other Star Wars games in the past, and while the SNES platformers were pretty good, this one is even better. Knights of the Old Republic may just be the best game in the franchise, and succeeds at being a top-tier RPG even if one has no interest in Star Wars. BioWare did the license proud.

I wound up bailing out on Star Wars: The Old Republic well before hitting the level cap, but not before digging into it more so than any other MMO I've played. Even if it is an unhappy marriage between two wildly different game types, the fact that it kept me hooked for so long at least counts for something.

A good game. It pays excellent homage to the film series (even though it's set before the movies), and is a really solid MMO.
