Making a MMO out of a RPG was just the wrong decision. Another disappointment for KOTOR fans. Hopefully, EA will start listening to their customer base and tailoring their games to meet the desires of their customers. This was just a grab for quick cash using Bioware's long-standing good name.

Released a bugged piece of **** as any EA game. Horribly optimized, I would drop below 30 fps in high settings on a machine that runs BF3 on ultra. Most features are a copy of WoW, although this isn't necessarily a bad thing in itself. But being a massive budget MMO, this is really a disappointment.

Seems to me Bioware / EA released this game too early only in effort to collect people's subscriptions while they then finish polishing the game off, adding features and fixing bugs that should have been in at launch. The questing is completely unique and unlike any other MMO I've ever played, however as with an MMO, questing is only a means to an end to which this game is severely lacking. Almost no UI customization (can't even resize the existing UI, which I would argue is just awful), no combat log, just a standard LFG channel (no tool like in Wow), no achievement, Legacy mode (which was hyped up by Bioware) is "coming soon", no macros and seems no support for 3rd party add-ons in the near future at all, combat is incredibly clunky as can be seen from numerous youtube videos where the game prioritizes combat animations over cooldowns, forcing you to wait for an animation to finish before you can use another ability.

I could go on and on about what this game is missing and why it's lacking but in the end it doesn't compete with other MMO's out right now for features and content. Maybe in 3-4 months it will but I'm not paying a subscription fee to hope.

I can in good conscience give this game 1/10.

This game was the direct product of copy and paste. They took World of Warcraft circa 2006, and put it in blender with KOTOR. The result is TOR. To boot: it costed them so much money to create the KOTOR aspects of the game, that the combat responsiveness and other standard MMO mechanics are sloppy at best. This is a poor excuse for a game.

This game is not an MMORPG worth checking out; it is a retarded little brother of World of Warcraft. I didn't like the partying system, nor the crafting system, nor the levling or questing system, and the game had nothing unique to it besides the Star Wars lore.

Rip off that's what this is. They should have implemented a more dynamic combat system, and look for a different model like f2p as loads of amazing games are coming up with like age of connan , dc universe, lotro, guild of wars etc...

To sum it up with a quote from the game loading screen: "a Bioware employee will never ask you for your password".

If you're looking for something different than World of Warcraft, note that this game is a bland copy down to the loading screens.

It is also a very ugly game and the textures and model work would not look out of place in a game of several years ago. Race choices are the same human shape with one special head feature/colour. Want to play as an interesting race? Too bad! Firstly, the acclaimed quest dialogue. After a brief cutscene and a chat with someone I promptly forgot, where I had to choose an option that had zero effect other than the next line of flavour text, I was sent into the MMO standard Kill X amount of Y because I said so quest. Then it happened again. And again. "Within minutes of starting the game you're doing things you wouldn't expect to be doing in other MMOs" is an outright lie. No, you're not. It's boring like every other MMO. On the first planet this is OK, it's initially pretty cool to have all this dialogue and OK to have a slow start. Midway through the second planet though, when things didn't pick up, the poorly written story, reused lines and the occasional voice actor change mid-dialogue grated on me so much I spent the entire rest of my time pressing space bar to skip through all of it, pausing only to select the comedy option or the ones that give me light/dark side points because otherwise conversation has little to no effect (indeed I can only remember one instance of a choice having any effect outside of the same conversation and no quests having any lasting effect) which makes me question why the dialogue wheel is even there, it could easily be replaced by an â Expand

Levelling Until lvl 11 is nice if you go further it becomes very linear in a crappy environment. About end game: My guild stopped operations because of game breaking bugs, and lack off people because they didn't like this game in this state and pvp is very bad and unbalanced. Besides PVE/PVP like exploring datacrons(Strange fault in the game is if body type 3 can´t reach them), dailies everything is disappointing. Its a static universe, mobs and NPCs are static, no freedom, to much walls/blockades, linearity, to much is instanced/sharded. You enter a building/cave which mostly all lookalike eachother and are very linear. Lots seems copy pasted. But the worst thing is if your done your looking at a wall and you can better die to turn in your quest instead of running that entire questinstance back same way you came in. The game is claustrophobic, straight edged, much copy pasted elevators and things. Everything but a real planet, a real world, or an MMORPG world can feel like. Feels like you live in a maze, a prison. Hard to imagine flying with your spaceship over the planets because its like the walls in this game want you to keep in the labyrinth. Or even land and take off yourself instead of seeing the same copy pasted video of your ship landing/take off on all locations.
The engine is horrible, the programming is horrible if you open any tab like inventory, map, character screen you have screen freezes and you can feel this sort of clunkiness throughout the whole game like ability delay and much more. There is no logic in ability rotations and talent trees are copied from WoW.

The main thing to play MMORPG's are about dynamical content not static content (story). Here it goes wrong in the first place. But to be short every department in this game has shortcomings, flaws, bugs and illogical things. From the character selection screen to endgame.

They say SWTOR has potential but seeing the list of issues... Also since the beta practically nothing changed and they did 1 year!! over a flashpoint (Kaon Under Siege) i can't really say it has potential although I hope it.

Lucas should have done a SWG 2 with good pve/pvp and gameplay.

You have reviews here that say basically 'mediocre=9' and 'not great but theres trolls here so I give it 10' Anyway - its not massive - you may have 15 people on the planet with you and half them will be in solo instances - that's not Massive or a way to build friends lists. Some great voices and good acting - in the class storylines. I have played 4 classes and one was excellent, 2 very good and one pretty poor. I liked bounty hunter best and republic trooper least - also did jedi knight and sith sorcerer. But the non-storyline quests are mundane 'kill 20 greater slimes' quests - grind. And when they make me run all over and back again - in a world with instant holo-communicators - that's just inexcusable. The class balancing, options beyond the classic healer, tank, ranged dps, melee dps , integration between the solo training content and the later group/endgame content is bad. Integration of the crew ship is bad, integration of space combat is bad. PVP is pretty much all separate - different gear, different skill trees - that's bad. PVP and raiding players all start to look identical - cause there's basically one look for your class with some minor color differentiation. The custom armor is nice - before endgame - but I haven't seen one whole set of armor - at best there is a matching chest, pants, hat. Reverse engineering is disappointing - both in the limitations on what can be reversed and the sometimes extreme number of items to improve a schematic. Getting materials is also a disappointment with some materials nearly impossible to find (e.g. electrum) and the harvesting crew skills having such limited missions. And then of course most trades are useless at endgame - anyone want a level 49 purple armor or weapon when the raid and pvp vendors give out level 51, 56, 58 stuff? 3 for system requirements - The lag for having 20 people around is bad - too bad for the system requirements. Likewise the graphics are no better than a 4 year old EQ2 - except they take 3x the resources. 8 for great class stories and actors - definitely some 10's but not all of them. 3 for grindy - mundane non-storyline quests - an average 5 minus some for un-neccessary run-arounds that don't fit in a world with instant-comms. 3 for PVP - 7 for fun instanced PVP - but subtract a bunch for making me play huttball over and over and over and not fixing it so some classes can't ruin that game by flying across the court without running or passing the ball. 2 for open-world PVP - basically Ilum. 3 for way over-hyping the marketing and under-preparing the support team. 3 for innovation. Nothing new here that was done well. A lot of important stuff missing. Subtract for messing things up for explorers. Oh and for that VIP lounge pass I paid a million for to get essentially - nothing. And it seems a crime to make us put so much into companions only to make them useless in the endgame. Overuse of british accents for the imperials and too much gibberish from the many alien languages on the republic side - both annoying by level 20. Fun for 3 months - about the levelling of 3 toons - maybe 5 months for some people. Then the questing gets too grindy and you start to look at endgame instead. Only to find population problems in addition to the usuall 'shortage of non-fun raid roles' problems. A really good MMORPG is fun for years. I give it a 4 overall. Well below the bar set by existing competing games. Lacking in anything new. Under-performing relative to the machine it needs. But still quite fun - for a little while. Several good performances and some nice artwork. Expand

The Old Republic gives you the exact opposite. In fact, it gives you something worse than the George Lucas Prequels.

First off: Somehow the clone trooper armor is in the republic, despite the fact that it's a long time before the Clone Wars.

Second: Star Wars was not fit to be an MMO. Galaxies proved that.

Third: The quests are boring and time consuming. I only got one of my ten characters past the starting world

Forth: I don't know if this applies to all, but when I paid sixty dollars for the game, it didn't come with a subscription. I paid a total of a hundred dollars to start up an MMO and keep it for four months... A waste.

Fifth: As many have stated previously, it has the exact same gameplay as almost any other MMO. Like many games, it is good, but quickly becomes repetitive, boring, and useless. It's not worth the sixty bucks.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. SWTOR is a strange case. Was it a single player RPG, It'd be a very, veery good game. Most class storylines are very good (except for smuggler, jedi knight and sith warrior unfortunately), and the game has good flow and quite a lot of content. However, it's all single-player content, and there is literally no reason to subscribe for longer than the free month at the moment.
Unfortunately, someone decided to make it into an MMO. Which lead to simplifcation and a huge amount of time sinks. So much for the Next-gen experience here, sadly.
Another thing I do not understand is why would anyone create an MMO in which one of the factions will suffer an utter defeat, and it's clear from the very start. Every quest line on both Empire and Republic side leads to the inevitable end: Empire loses. Everyone important dies. You cannot even save anyone. Your decisions are meaningless.
Another issue I have with the game is that SWTOR's Sith are... dumb. There's no other word for it. They are written to be superpowered angsty teens who know NOTHING about ruling an empire. If you look at the (TABOO!) EU stories, comic books and even Palpatine himself, the Sith are cunning (both in new hope era and old republic, so there), and they'd never act like idiots. Which is what SWTOR's Sith turn out to be. Infighting, petty conflicts, impulsiveness. They screw up everything they touch, and apparently all the want is to CAUSE TERROR AND FEAR. You cannot rule an empire that way. Sith have no way to go other than lose here.
Multiplayer part of the game is horrid. The netcode stutters, animations fail to play (tested on my brand new i7 aswell as my brother's older machine) and there is no class balance. I wouldn't expect class balance so soon after release, but it's strikingly apparent that some developers loved their classes more than others. Instances are boring too, we seriously have seen this kind of gameplay and over what, 7 years? it grew pretty stale. There's no reason to even socialise in this MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER game, because your sidekick can get the job done. At worst he/she/it will die.
Was SWTOR a single player RPG, it'd be a very solid title, a strong 8/10 (4/10 if smuggler. yes, it is THAT bad). BioWare decided to make it into a MMO though. Therefore, 4/10. Because the single player part receives a 7 overall from me (i just can't forgive the smuggler. sorry), and the multiplayer is a strong 3.

Not a very bad mmo, but certainly not good enough for this franchise and this price. Very disappointing. Most of the time, you play alone, strange for a mmo, so it's more like a rpg? But usually i love rpg, so why i think it's not good? Because from my point of view it's not enough immersive, graphics are poor, there is really nothing original/innovative in this thing.

How strange that my opinion of this once-great company could change so abruptly. Star Wars: The Old Republic is one of several major disappointments I have weathered over the recent years. Not only is it shoddy from a technical standpoint, but it fails both mechanically and creatively. Let me be clear: I am not talking about the bugs. All MMO's release with bugs. For me, bugs are an inevitable and forgivable aspect of the genre. What is really astonishingly bad is that, for all its production value, the voice-acted missions (from beginning to end) are copy-paste sob stories with the same fetch-and-kill parameters. Invariably, you will spend hours at each quest hub listening to the same briefings you heard at the previous one. If you are like me, however, you start smashing spacebar with no fear of the consequences (because there aren't any). Oh, sure, each class gets their own set of marginally interesting missions, but... guess what? They make up about 10% of your journey from levels 1 to 50. The other 90% is filled with the aforementioned tedium. There is no hot-fix or patch (at least in the foreseeable future) that can change this sad fact. Can it get any worse? Why, yes, it can! BioWare has put deliberate emphasis on replayability, implementing the Legacy system, which will give you bonuses to experience and customization as you bring new characters to max level! So if the nigh nonexistent end-game content isn't enough, relax! You can suffer through all the hum-drum solo content again and again and again until all your character slots are full! Hooraaay! While I realize that grind-factor is a difficult element to work around, there are at least aspects of the game that can alleviate some of the drudgery... right? Wrong. Not yet, anyway. At best, PVP is chaotic and limited. World PVP is nonexistent, thanks to the all the zones being sharded into instances. Space combat is a culmination of rinse-and-repeat Starfox-esque side-quests, which MIGHT be fun, except there is ZERO variety. Oh! And if you're playing SW:TOR for the social experience, forget about it. That aspect of the game consists of minimal customization and an immovable chat window that looks like tiny blue vomit. In essence, there's no way to make your character feel like he/she is yours. You're playing on the same rail as everyone else, and you're expected to do it more than once. Granted, this might all change someday, as MMOs are wont to do. The problem is, SW:TOR already feels dated and it will take the better part of two years to get it up to snuff. I expect, by then, the competition will have evolved. Bottom line: BioWare has a LOT of work to do if they hope to pass this game off as "adequate". Then again, I suppose it doesn't matter, so long as they make a profit off of their disenfranchised fans Expand

Pvp is broken - on all pvp servers the Republic is outnumbered at least 2:1. Empire players have long pvp queues and most of the time you get into a warzone it is Hutball. Ilum (pvp world) is a joke if you play Republic cause you will get stomped as soon as you get in by 100 empire players, then camped at medcenter without being able to spawn correctly.

Quests are generic (only addition is voice acting) - go there get me that, kill 10 of those then you get bonus quest, kill 10 of those... Your choices do not make any difference at all in the long run. Some of the quests are in a phased zone - meaning you can't encounter anyone there. I thought the worlds were too big cause i ran and i ran for minutes not encountering anyone. Oh and yes running - there is lots of it. If i measured how long i have run from one quest to another with how long i did actual gameplay - it would be 50/50.

Some worlds are beautiful, others are blend meh. The game is really hardware heavy, even though you can't see why. Overall graphics are like from the 2006. single player games. Overall i am disapointed since it comes from Bioware and it is Star Wars.

The game's main selling point is story and VO. Story itself gives only the illusion of choice as there is never lasting consequence (save for aesthetics) to your decisions. This means that there isn't much room for game-play inside of the story, unlike previous Bioware titles. VO quickly becomes annoying after watching an NPC glorify a "kill ten rats"quest via 2 minutes of b-grade acting for the hundredth time. This game is a shallow copy/paste job of WoW but severely lacking in nearly every feature we would expect to see in an MMO released in 2011/2012. The list of missing features is loooooooong (and frankly shocking)... I would normally hold out hope for improvements via patches but many of the game's issues seem impossible to fix due to decisions made early-on in the design process (the heavy instancing, linearity, gear treadmill, etc...)

Lastly, if the game were not a subscription title I would rank it higher. But as it stands now, it appears folks saw the success of WOW, made a SP game with MP elements, and called it an MMO to hopefully get more cash.

In any case expect substantial loss of subs as the game is unplayable for those affected.

This game could have been so much more, but it's clear the designers aimed at making an outstanding single player experience and disregarded nearly everything that has traditionally made multi-player games successful. Given the immense possibilities available in this IP, this is most unfortunate.

There may still be the potential here for some future improvement, but as it stands now, there are many better alternatives available, most of which require far less of an investment in player time and $.

    What I found lacking:
    - No LFG/LFR, having played WoW since early 1995 I just dont want to go back to the way WoW was before LFG. Some ppl say that destroyed WoW, but for me it enhanced it greatly.
    - No mods/macros, I really like to change the UI to the way I like it, and the standard UI is far far away from my preferences.
    - Graphics IMO is worse than WoW, lots of copy/paste and same colors everywhere. If you take a low level Jedi Guardian and a lvl 50 guardian you probably cant tell the diffence on the gear. Most that changed during levelling up was the colors or if the hood was up or down.
    - Too many buttons to push. With Jedi Guardian atleast I had to have all 4 bars present and a lot of them had to be used during different fight. Would have preferred lower CDs and 4-5 buttons to push instead.

I honestly don't understand the references to how "polished" the game is when reading the critic reviews. It's far from polished. Yes, the cut-scenes are extremely good, and the static scenery is rendered pretty well, the animations are appalling. I mean really bad. You can get an impression of that from the various YouTube videos, but you don't really see how bad they are until you play.

The user interface (UI) is clunky and totally dominates the display area even on my 28" screen at 1920x1200 resolution. There's no way to scale it down either, and other than the chat box you can't move UI components around.

The headline figure for creating this game is £100M. It's crystal clear from the moment you start playing that this money went into hiring great actors and animators for the cut-scenes and not into the actual game play, which is weak, shallow and generic.

And that's a shame, because I really, really enjoyed the immersive world of the original Star Wars Galaxies game. I was hoping I'd find a version of that "done right", in much the same way as Rift is "WoW done right".

    But it's not.

    It's done wrong. Very wrong.

Got to level 35 and I am done. It is just not very fun. The best part is the voice acting and the atmosphere because I love star wars. The Devs give the excuse that everything is technologically complex and whatever the player-base want the game to have, they claim the are working on it with no ETA. Rift is an example of how Devs really can make new content with both high frequency and polish, so Bioware really need to just get up of their asses and work harder. The games main feature, legacy, the thing it has instead of all the staple MMO features the game is lacking is not released yet and even then is very underwhelming based on hints of future patches. Via the legacy system and the fact that the classes have stories, the game encourages you to play as many characters as possible, but there is only one leveling path so it is very boring doing the same quests over and over again. Bioware have made it very evident that they really just do not know how to run an MMO. The world PVP area was such a failure they abandoned it completely, and PVP in general is crap. The class stories are very good but the side quest stories are crap and you will end up skipping all the voice acting from about half way through the game onward. Overall the game has just got stuck in a position where it is months behind what is expected of it with no way to recover, and at the immensely slow rate new updates are released it will take well over a year until this game is actually good enough to be worth paying a subscription for, if it even survives that long and remains P2P. The balance was broken so much in 1.2 that I kept losing in PvP for hours (playing Republic healer).
I'm part of a guild with more than 100 members and since a few weeks if we get more than 3 people online at the same time it's a celebration, and since 1.2 I'm often alone.
Quoting the Ancient Aliens narrator, "where did they go?". Now I know.

Healers (I play one) are useless since 1.2, both for themselves and the other players, even with a massive amount of endurance and with a full heal skill tree.
What do experienced players say to the healers now? "If you see one of these enemy classes, RUN". Are you SERIOUS? Playing PvP to RUN? Is that how BioWare sees a balanced game?

I wanted to love this game but BioWare disgusted me from playing.
As it is, I wouldn't want to touch it again even if it was Free to Play.
I hope it will get better in the future, but in the meantime I'll just stop playing AND paying.
Did you already feel like you wasted your time playing for months hoping it would get better? I did.

I just hope they'll release a patch to let us play in single-player mode with more bots, and with pre-1.2 skill trees, as the game seems to have been designed for this.

Back in the day before a couple fairly major changes that other people have listed (crafting, unoriginal new quests, companion changes, and changes to multiplayer content), this game used to really hold my attention because of its original, unique story telling, especially the story quests for each individual character class (8 classes = 8 stories). Endgame content when level cap was 55 was pretty good too if you had a good guild to run with.

But after 4 years of playing this game, it's time to look for something new.

    Sincerely, bored.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I like this game, yet the restraints placed onto free to play players are immense. The total game killer for me was being limited to 200,00 game currency credits, yet all the things I need'd to "Unlock" my character were well above that :S, so ok you can buy straight from the cartel and not go though the player run economy (GTN) but still the same issue raise's again and again for things not in the cartel and only available though luck of looting or buying on the GTN.

Other retarded things include skill bar slots you have to unlock via cash, to use all your available skills.
Only two characters per server reduced XP, reduced gold, less choice in quest awards, only 3 space battles per week instead of infinite, 1/2 the inventory space, no cargo hold space, only so many flash point (special instance) rewards per week, No support only 3 races to choose from, no custom skins for companions, sprint training lagging behind subscribers by 10 lvl's same for speeder training, many more but the total game killer is the 200,000 credit limit. If you think you will subscribe, then may be worth trying, I personally didn't get enough out of it to make it worth losing money every month for. As a dip into game and buy something occasionally direct from the Cartel, would be nice, but too many restrictions on that method.

The story is a little one dimensional, though nicely scripted with only minor issues in enemies being immune at the wrong time ect, or kills or switch's not activating the next step in the quest. Reasonable voice acting really help set the mood, music is good yet sparse. Planets are confusing, especially Taris with a map from hell I was forever trying to work out 3 dimensions on a 2d mini-map, with no visual clue or arrow system to help point you in the right direction. No voice support for mic which is a bad call for a MMO with PvP.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, I have to congratulate Bioware for giving men very ample buttocks (unlike, for instance, Star Trek Online which doesn't have the ability to make a cute guy). Although sexy backsides are out of place on the uglier guys in the name (and there are plenty), there is plenty of NPC eye candy to go around. However, that brings me to a big problem. Running around massacring cute guys is not my idea of fun. For instance, there's a section of Coruscant where ordinary guys supposedly were given vigilante control. I can't remember the name of them, but it's a very thin plot idea, particularly with the way things are set up. We aren't talking about a small gang here, but a giant sprawling army, spread into little pockets everywhere. The army is equipped in some places with medical guys who are very cute, both in terms of face and body, and it's frankly very sad to be forced to shoot them. In fact, one of them looked exactly like my in-game husband (the Legacy system let me marry my other character), which was not only surreal but offensive. It also makes little sense from a Star Wars morality perspective. I'm supposedly a light side character and I get off on killing vast amounts of people like medical assistants because my character is a "scoundrel"? This isn't Star Wars at all. This is really Massacre Central. The only light and dark morality consists of lame dialogue and lamer plot options. I can't believe so much money was spent to make this game. Shoving big-breasted women at me, one after the other, with flirt options is heavy-handed, too. There is no man-to-man alternative unless you're talking about very limited ghetto options on pay-to-gay Makeb. The inability to run for free players is too punitive, as is the inability to have two function bars visible. It's also lame that you are awarded an item that lets you modify your companion's appearance but can't use it. What kind of game gives people items and says what you were given is completely useless? That's not a reward system. A game developer walks a very fine line between being patronizing to players and motivating them to spend money.

People say they play the game for the story, but as a gay player, the only thing I'd be interested in at all is finding some romance, and there is none to be had. I got my fill of massacring bored groups of milling creatures and men right away. Plus, even if romance with my companion, Corso, were possible, something would have to be done about his face. Oh, that's right... can't use the customization item that I was rewarded with. It's ironic that the most memorable thing to happen to me in this game was feeling sad when looking down at the fetching body of a medical dude in that Coruscant section. I did not feel like a hero, only a butcher.

What I can't forgive is a game engine that would be outdated 4-5 years ago that struggles desperatly and in vein on a decent rig, a complete lack of innovative features we've come to expect from the genre i.e a decent auction interface, decent grouping tool and cross server pvp. The full voiced questing system will WOW you until you realize that there are only three quests, destroy objects, kill dudes, loot dudes no escorts bombing runs or vehicle sections to be seen and to top it all off your actions have no effect on the world whatsoever so all that wonderful fluff every npc vomits into your ears is wasted.

To say the gameplay borrows from wow implies any work beyond cutting and pasting was involved right down to the trees of each class being re-written tooltips.

If you want kotor 3 then this is your game, if you want a star wars mmo with a beautifully and handcrafted story for your class and easy to jump into group play then tough cookies because this isn't it.

This will of course come across as harsh but to have my expectations raised so high only to be shattered into a thousand poorly copied world of warcraft pieces feels like a betrayal and a waste of my money.

EA's customer service and management of this game has been spectacularly awful. In too many ways to go into here, this has been a disaster thus far, and it's no wonder EA is laying off employees and their stock is plummeting even more. Just google 'Tortanic'.

Ever wanted to play an incomplete version of World of Warcraft, while taking breaks to play Star Fox? That's more or less what this game is. It's very linear, but is advertised as the opposite. If you played Star Wars Galaxies, you were probably disapointed with the updates that "ruined" the game. Well good news is, they won't need to do that here. It's like it was based around those game ruining updates along with a "how could we take this to a new level of what MMO fans don't want" attitude behind it. On the plus side... I don't know, I guess it's got some pretty colours. Good Job Lucas Arts, you got alot of fans to give you alot of money, then instantly regret it. Again.

To say that it is a WoW clone is a bit too derisive, but not all that far from the mark. For a game and IP with such potential, it is immensely disappointing to see a product that has taken absolutely no risks, has little innovation to speak of, and somehow manages to let down expectations at practically every turn. SWTOR brings absolutely nothing to the table that has not been done before, and better, by previous MMOs or single-player RPGs.

In regards to story and dialogue which have, in the past, been a golden seal of Bioware craftsmanship, SWTOR is the perfect example of how far this previously illustrious developer has fallen. Excessive instancing, badly coimpressed sound files, and flat-out fanfiction-quality writing mar nearly every conversation from sidequest to "epic" class story.

The worst part of it all, perhaps, is that it falls to the individual users to make these criticisms, while "official" reviewers are buried in threats of boycott from EA and out-and-out bribery for a high score. Not to mention the multiple, and documented, cases of Bioware employees posting their own reviews as supposedly impartial and unaffiliated users on these forums.

In short, a perfect microcosm of so many of the problems that plague the modern gaming industry. A disappointment for Star Wars fans and MMO players alike, please do yourself a favor and don't be taken in by the hype. Spend your time playing other, better RPGs, and lament the loss of the KotOR 3 that could have been.

Now what would have been nice is an open world. Not only are the planets enclosed, but space consists of on-rail shooting sections that have absolutely no place in an MMO, just like the weak exposition. Add to that - the on-rails sections are really boring and repetitive. I hope TOR crashes and burns, it's a mess, it's a joke of an MMO, and it's horrendous. Expand

That's right, play with your friends and we get punished by having our companions banished. - Not being able to take companions on Operations. If I want to fill my raid slots with gimped DPS and healing AI over real humans, that should be MY choice. - Groupmates being forbidden to watch certain class quest cutscenes. I am standing RIGHT next to my Mercenary friend, why can't I see the cutscene of him having a conversation with the other NPC standing right in front of me? Oh no, you have to stand there tapping your foot, not being able to enjoy your friends class quest cutscenes. What amateur did you hire off the street to design this illogical, immersion killing nonsene of being forbidden to see many of your friends class quest cutscenes WHEN I AM STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO THEM? ADD AN OPTION TO SOCIAL "Watch Class Quest Cutscenes instead of standing around being bored waiting for your friend." How's that for a SMART idea? The single player/story part of this game is amazing. The MMO/Grouping dynamics were designed to make you hate grouping and go solo. Don't care and won't be reading what other players think, this is my feedback to Bioware and hopefully they'll hire COMPETENT devs to fix these problems.

But more about the game: The PvP is horribly unbalanced, it always has been. The developers seem incompetent and unable to make proper fixes.

The free to play is lacking: EVERYTHING COSTS MONEY, EVEN TO SUBSCRIBERS. THERE IS ALMOST NO POINT TO BEING A SUBSCRIBER BECAUSE IT STILL COSTS MONEY AFTER THE SUB. This is completely asinine to me.

The story, well, the story. Any choice you make in the story has no consequence. Kill the guy or don't kill the guy. The jedi next to you will still be like: "cool, let's go." I mean, wtf. I just murdered this dude, there blood all over you. It's like this the whole game, no matter what you do, you just go to the same part of the quest as the other choices with the same dialogue. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this game is absolutely atrocius, the gameplay is repetitive,it gets too long to level up you have to kill thousands of roaming dudes to have a single level up after level 30,,that doesn't get any part done well, except in very few parts of class storylines, the npcs are too aggressive and spawn in the same place over and over, without even changing positions ,otherwise the missions are bland, boring and shallow 'kill x dudes' 'destroy x things' 'kill boss y' turn in,the game gets a annoying freemium that blocks everything, you have to pay the ingame currency (which has to be bought),or be a subscriber, for an additional inventory line, you have to pay,to have an extra cargo hold slot guess what?you have to pay,to have normal XP gain after level 10?you have to pay or buy the xp boosters, the medical probes?you have to pay,to equip rare items you gained legitemely in the game?you have to purchase an 'authorization'
but the worst part is that this game ruined the kotor series to be able to be 'alive' ,for a MMO that went F2P after a year

I tried sending a ticket to customer support for help but only subscribed members can send tickets. Moving on they limit your inventory severely as well as giving you item rewards that you can't use because you aren't subscribed which wouldn't be that bad if they didn't give it to you and have it waste an inventory slot in the first place. There is just so much locked behind a paywall that it ruins the experience completely no matter how well voice acted or good the story is. The story is pretty okay and it's what all the people who pay flock to when someone complains about the **** the free to players have to go though. ''If I hear it wasn't F2P before and now that it is you're still complaining? don't like don't play'' one more time it'll be the death of me. The gameplay is cookie cutter WoW painted to look like Star Wars. I would not subscribe to play this game because it is so underhanded and low. A game should earn its subscription and Star Wars The Old Republic has definitely not. There are much better selections however if you don't mind being completely restricted and just want story then go ahead however I would recommend Star Wars the Force Unleashed or any other Star Wars game instead. If I could rate this game by service alone I would have to go into the negatives but gameplay I would say it is a 2 or a 3 but overall I would say a 0 or a 1 out of 10 and I would not feel guilty.

I severely dislike the FTP model used in SWTOR, with free players having ridiculous restrictions.

I have played other FTP games such as DCUO, which were a lot of fun, and ultimately let you play how you wanted. Paying for things was optional if you wanted the extra stuff. In SWTOR however, I feel like they only give you access to half the game.

Very, very disappointed. Bioware/EA, whoever is responsible, needs to sort stuff out.

This game does not, it's yet again, a mask of something bland and terrible. Nuff said. Worst part of game: REPUBLIC AND EMPIRE ARE THE SAME THING. They mirror each other in classes and skils and skill-trees. SAME stuff, different names. The names and icons ar ethe difference. Period. The mark of horribleness. SPACE COMBAT? Rail shooter. You don't fly freely. Missions repeated. Shoot things poping in on screen. Character CUSTOM? Everythings human: Chiss: Blue Human Miraluka: Green Human Cyborg: Human with 1 additional custom option, (metalic crap on face). TwiLek: (almost exclusively Republic unless unlocked, only closest thing to an alien). Rhatataki: White Human etc. etc. No wookiees, no rodians, no trandoshans. Nothing. Companions, 1 at a time only. Trade professions, done almost all exclusively for credit-cost and by companions in backround of game. Same with crafting. 5 possible companions on each tpy eof class you pick (total): most all classes you pick, between 4 and 5 companions (all) are boring as hell. Flat personalities and wooden. Aliens add difference and can be fun, but almost none have personalities anyway. Vette was fun on my Sith Warrior. That was IT. Out of the other 15-20 companions on other classes I experienced, they're boring. You get a buncha dudes or you get what looks like underaged girls with poor voice acting (who all sound identical....) for romance options. Generic. Everyhting is mirrored in this game. COMPANION QUESTS? Terrible... mostly brief talking chains. My system is a few years dated... but still runs intense games well. This game... the WORST game for running on a system. Even with LOWEST GRAPHICS POSSIBLE this game lagged and glitched like Hell. Every time I naturally exit this game I get Windows Error Reports. Other times, my computer will hang on the desktop for literally 10 minutes.... NOT OTHER GAME DOES THESE THINGS. It's intoleralbe. My buddy has a max-performance system for gaming.... he gets stuttering all the same regardless. As most wil tell you too, with GRAPHICS, Highest and Lowest almost don't matter. My comp runs Highest settings amost exactly the same as the lowest.... program issues. Frankly the grpahics and LOOK of the game is awful and dated. The 'doo-dadds' to put in the world, like misc. objects like consols and trees... etc... few exist. You see Computer Consols stuck everywhere and htere's only 3 different types. There's computer consols on bridges for godsake... it's just a bunch of designer flunkees out of college rushing thorugh on a timeline with no care for quality. Push Product make reslease-date, charge-for or patch rest. 1 year passes, nothing changes either. Cartel Market. Real money/points store... there's not even anything in it. Different colors of same objects you get in-game. Or just junk like unlockable storage spaces.... you can unlock a playable Race for both sides for any class (yes, even if you subscribe, you are restricted as to the races to classes that you can play still). And that CARTAL DOLLAR SIGN IS RAMMED DOWN YOUR F#$#%NG THROAT. It's all over your windows and HUD. Expand

Basically it is a one way dead end kinda road with limited replayability or reasons to revisit old places. It is box inside boxes inside boxes. It offers very little new to the mmo"rpg" genre. It does not even have day/night cycles and you can not swim either. The only thing this game lacks is an auto play button so it can play it self because it is that boring. I fail to see how they can call it an rp game really. And it comes from the company that have made legendary rp games in the past. Seriously those that play it is hard core star wars fans that just have to be in a star wars game. Even the mobs are just spread out in the combat zones in what often seems random spots they been dropped down with limited to no movement at all. Just waiting for a hero to come and kill their lifeless virtual bodies. The only moment this game is mildly good is when you are in the storyline quest it feels good but when you are not then it feels like an empty shell! Sadly the good gets burried under the extensive amounts of meaningless and dull quests you have to do in between. You are a powerful sith badass but you are super dependant on a babysither to nurse you around. WHAT?!? Solo without companion is almost impossible so there goes the beeing a powerful sith immersion. Darth Vader is not angry he is disapointed.. I really cant express exactly how much I dispise this game and I was super exited about it. I even bought the col edition so the jokes on me. LOL Never have I been more disappointed with a game and I can not recommend anyone to try it at all. I wished I could give you 300 million reasons to like this game but I cant. Mediocre storyline is what it does best but there is alot of alternatives that are far better.. Now all this is my opinion of course if you think this is the **** then that is just fine. Good luck with that ! :D Expand

I was highly disappointed in this game, it didnt feel at at all like Knights of the old republic 1 or 2 in terms of story or pacing. This might seem harsh but it felt like a WOW knock off. For me it got old and repetitive real fast. Would have VERY much preferred Knights of the old republic 3.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. SWTOR is slowly approaching the inevitable brick wall that will crash it. When the game first came out it was quite exciting. The story lines were great and fun to interact with, it had a very "Star Wars" feel to it...But, you quickly find out that it is a "once through" game.

No matter how many expansions or extra content they throw in, it is essentially nothing new at all to the game play. In order to advance through the new story content you must do the same thing you have done on everything else.... the same linear sequence of:
    1: Enter zone
2: Follow the limited path through the map
3: Kill the enemies placed directly in the path that are waiting for you
4: Kill the easy boss at the end of the path
5: Get the next quest in the story and repeat steps 1-4

In other words, the game does not offer anything new. Instead of adding innovative content....the developers instead tend to "change" the existing mechanics a little (changing the class tree, changing the abilities by removing some to add another, all of which causing you to have to re-spec your characters). New gear is added for the new levels which makes your old gear you spent a lot of time earning completely obsolete and not good enough for whatever new Ops or FP that came with new content....

The most recent expansion "The Fallen Empire" is a fun story to watch but just the same old mechanics... I was bored with it halfway through after spending 20mins per segment just killing things in the same fashion as I listed above.

The new major changes to companions, zones, crafting, and Flashpoints were all a real shocker to me. Your companions no longer benefit from gear stats. They really hold no diversity now as they all can play any role (Tank, Heals, Damage). The gear is now for looks only. This takes away from the diversity of your player as a whole. This change was made because the developers felt they were too overpowered and players were too easily completing content.... THAT is a huge slap in the face to the players. It makes most of the crafting worthless now.... Considering you can get your good gear from flashpoints and ops... it really makes crafting only for the high end mods you might get as a drop.

The game changes have forced the typical solo player into playing the boring daily quests and possibly a heroic 2 and solo flashpoint..... but the game has suddenly bottle-necked players into having to group to beat content. 2 players with their companions can't even attempt a hard mode flashpoint now without getting ripped to shreds...even with high end gear. Now you must find or wait for a 4 man group in order to play the content....

All in all.... the other reviews list the other issues and failures of SWTOR. The game is free to play....and after all these years playing it...I no longer feel it is worth $15 a month for the few extras I get being a subber..

All it will take is another MMO with potential to hit the market and I think this will kill SWTOR. Only the hardcore Star Wars fans will remain.... Players are ready for something else in a sense. Especially the PvP players....

Of all the MMOs out there, this one is the ugliest and plays the worse. This game looks and plays worse than the beloved KOTOR from 2004, so why is it being touted as a game today? Because EA wants to cash in on the MMO market, but like everything they touch, turns to dry dust. No excuse to make this bad of a Star Wars game. Why anyone would pay a subscription to play this is beyond me. Expand

The selling point of the game is the story, brilliantly written and executed... except for certain parts in which I utterly despise. As part of the LGBT community, I am appalled that Bioware had missed something SO IMPORTANT.

The gameplay is fun, but nothing special; the content is interesting, and the customization allows you to express yourself and feel unique from others of your same class/race.

    Pros:
    * It has excellent story missions and the coherence of that story runs well all the way through the game.
    * The voice acting runs from pretty good to amazing in some places.
    * It has a pretty decent item appearance customization system.
    * It has an _excellent_ item modification system which allows you to keep your old gear up to date with your level.
    * A lot of effort was put into making the social aspect of the game accommodating with things like: the RNG cutscenes, the ability to join in on others story missions, granting access to your stronghold to friends, guild strongholds, and the hologram system which lets distant party members participate in quests cutscenes.

    Cons:
    * The game used to be better in the past, they've unfortunately followed the World of Warcraft model of simplifying their talent and ability system, which makes the whole thing feel.. uninspiring.
    * The customer service is really awful, the response times are absolutely terrible, and they seem to only be capable of very basic assistance, not to mention that they exclude a huge amount of their player base from the forum support.
    * Microtransactions. The game is riddled to hell with microtransactions. I half expect them to soon limit players to 1,000,000 steps a day, with a 40cc purchasable item to grant another million for that day. Seriously, even as a subscriber you are terribly limited from what would seem like basic functionality, and while you do get some coins from the monthly stipend and class story mission progression, it just isn't enough to sustain you unless you refrain from things like changing your characters hair color or style.

I honestly think that this would have been a highly enjoyable and popular game if the "Cartel Market" (in-game shop) were reigned in.

KOTFE (as it's often referred to) made this game feel like a chore and feels unapologetic in wasting your time. The storyline is incredibly lazy. One of the few things this game had going for it was some of the writing, so that really hurts it. The writers never met a deus ex machina they didn't like. The gameplay is often plagued with poor pacing and glitchy interactions. Trash mob spawning is absolutely maddening and unnecessary. Character dialogue and growth is sometimes fine, but for the most part only fit for bad fanfiction. You can forget about making any hard choices or the few choices you do make mattering at all.

It's such a shame that so much Star Wars IP has been ruined by the desire for a quick buck. Add this to the list of wasted potential with The Last Jedi, Rise of Skywalker, etc.

LucasArts generally exercised greater quality control of Star Wars games than most licensed properties receive, though that didn't necessarily translate into titles that were actually good. I've played a few other Star Wars games in the past, and while the SNES platformers were pretty good, this one is even better. Knights of the Old Republic may just be the best game in the franchise, and succeeds at being a top-tier RPG even if one has no interest in Star Wars. BioWare did the license proud.

I wound up bailing out on Star Wars: The Old Republic well before hitting the level cap, but not before digging into it more so than any other MMO I've played. Even if it is an unhappy marriage between two wildly different game types, the fact that it kept me hooked for so long at least counts for something.

A good game. It pays excellent homage to the film series (even though it's set before the movies), and is a really solid MMO.
