This said this is a difficult game to review as it does some things very right but there are other glaring deficiencies that certainly drag it down. Starting with a positive, The game looks quite good, and if you are a star wars fan the story modes for each class is generally excellent and while very linear does draw you in and will keep you interested. The game also has heroic objectives on each planet, which encourage you to join groups of 2-4 to complete for good rewards, though at this stage they are becoming difficult to complete as they aren't necessary to progress and the numbers in the leveling portion of the game playing are certainly decreasing. Upon reaching the level cap you do remember unfortunately that the game is a MMO and at this it fails at this quite badly quite badly. The PvP is horrible, both unbalanced and very unrewarding. With only 3 battlegrounds and an inability to queue for the ones you enjoy (if there magically is one you can enjoy) you are simply stuck playing what the game gives you. The battlegrounds are server specific too, and you will find yourself coming up against the same squads time and time again. Great if you're winning not so great if your losing. The world PvP is mostly set in one zone, and at this point in time is not doing well either. You are stuck in an instanced environment with generally extremely unbalanced numbers on either side that is suffering from a plethora of bugs. Most people playing are also suffering from extreme frame-rate chopping which make this style of combat even more un-enjoyable. As for Instances (flash points) , they are very story based, which I admit first time through felt quite good, but upon multiple - which in any mmo you can be expected to have to do - runs they get long, drawn and boring. You can skip the multiple cut-scenes and text which is good, but only if the other members of you group do as well. That said some of the bosses are well designed with quite good mechanics, though the trash to get to them can be quite extensive and from my experience I've found the dungeon completion time a bit on the long side. One last complaint in this regard is that all the dungeons are based in the general area of your main faction base. In theory this should be great, but actually finding the dungeon you are after can become a bit of a chore, and the game would benefit immensely from a flashpoint finder/or teleport to the instance function.

For the diehard MMO fan too the loot is a bit of a letdown. Most slots of armor in the game are 'socketed'. This means that the item graphic you love at the start of the game could theoretically be with you until the end if you just keep changing the items that are inside. A good mechanic, though it takes something from the joy in getting a new item drop as it is often just the same as what you had, particularly if you've been keeping on top of modding your items.

In conclusion this is a good game if you are a star wars fan wanting to play through a long an extensive story mode. If you are just an MMO fan looking for great combat, well designed encounters and phat lewt I would probably give it a miss.

graphics suck, space travelling and fighting are horrible, quests are ok, pvp is resumed by a kind of futur sport game like speedball, craft is useless and too easy,

well... for a ctrl+c ctrl+v of wow, it's a fake mmo and star wars game... bring us back the swg style !

2 Gameplay and character advancement: Not going to sugar coat it...this is WoW reskinned and the space combat portion is Afterburner reskinned, there IS NO denying it, the simularities are so legion, i'd need an entire page to list them. One thing they did do very well with was enabling players to advance with customizable armor peices, instead of requiring the player base to wear that levels' gear drops, but then they inexplicably drop the ball at max level with raid armor and high level pvp armors, making players take off their favorite look instead. I didn't so much mind the WoW cloning..except it's done poorly, which makes me wonder what took them developing this game. Glaring flaws include the clunky text chat system, the lack of any sort of macro system, which has been available in MMO's since Everquest, poor pet control and pathing, no voice chat and errors with exsisting 3rd party voice chat systems that simply shouldn't exsist in this day and age and a failure to make any sort of improvement on the talent tree system that WoW players are very used too. The space combat system? I played a lot of Afterburner in.....1990 i think, you'll have to forgive me it's been a long time. It was a good game, but to say that this could have been done better would be the understatement of the year...FOR GOD'S SAKE that's a 20+ YEAR old game feature!! So much could have been done with space combat....it could practically be it own game, but instead....Afterburner...this makes me want to punch babies. If you like Starwars this game is worth a look....so long as afterburner doens't piss you off. If you wanted a change from WoW this will be a good diversion for a while, but i'll say this, without major fixes this game will not last as long as it's parent. On the upside the development team do seem to be working overtime to make additions, at this point i'd still give this game a 50/50 shot at surviving past it's first year. There are game designers out there that are hungry. It seems as if this team has gotten a bit fat off of past success. A little about me before you assume: I've played Everquest, City of Heros/Villains, World of Warcraft on the MMO front.....and yes....I've played Afterburner...one of the kings of the coin-op generation IMO

As for the space battles, I was disappointed to find out that they were scripted, similar to a Star Fox level; but I feel it's better to have scripted space battles than none at all. This game could have easily received a 7 or 8, but SWTOR has more bugs than a pay-by-the-hour motel room's mattress. The bugs in this game break the game. The company is doing a good job at fixing these bugs, but at their current rate SWTOR won't be worth your money for another 4-6 months. Expand

Boring graphics, S.O.S. quests, its every mmo created in the last 5 years with a new splash of paint and a Star Wars logo. Pathetic excuse for time wasting. Pray there is another free trial weekend so you don't have to waste your money on trying out this ludicrous venture into the Star Wars franchise.

As someone who had been looking forward to an Old Republic MMO before SWtOR was even announced, I can say that I probably let myself get sucked into that hype train without giving it much thought. That said, the game does some things right.. The story-driven questing and voice acting really make you feel immersed in the Star Wars universe, and that's fantastic. Unfortunately, once you reach max level it all comes to a screeching halt. It's quite clear that BioWare aimed for the longevity of this game to focus on players creating alts and playing through the stories over and over, and that's just not realistic. Though each individual class has its own unique story, you're still faced with doing the same bland area quests and visiting the same environments over and over, and that gets repetitive and old very fast. The end game is nothing memorable, with a few varied raid dungeons that I assume are meant to keep us occupied until the next content patch (which are released at a horribly slow pace, and even when released are very lacking). As an example, my own operations group cleared the newest raid on hard-mode within two weeks of its release.. Now what? We sit around for months paying a subscription until the next piece of content comes out to do it all over again? No thank you, BioWare. Expand

Unfortunately the warning that SWTOR gives before entering a pvp server is far from the truth. It states you will be in constant battles between players, I was in 4 pvp fights before level cap outside the warzone, and 1 of those was because we got people to tell us where anyone was. The game is far to controlled, has no end game worth mentioning, the only thing that is even remotely different and worthwhile in the game is the main story line of each class, which will send you playing warzone over and over again trying to level up just so you can get to the next part without dealing with side missions you've done plenty times before. This is a single player game smashed into an mmo which then goes by mmo rules, and if you've ever played an mmo you know what I'm talking about. Less than stellar NPC (standing around waiting for you to come kill them), same skill to button type combat. In my opinion, an mmo isn't worth playing if it has no pvp and the end game wasn't well thought out. Whats the point in maxing your level if there are neither of these. It wouldn't take a lot of changes to make this game great, but it's highly unlikely those changes are coming. Expand

I was an original subscriber to SW:TOR at launch - my characters have the "Founder" title - and I was on an original server called Fa'athra. I moved across the country this summer and cancelled my sub while I resettled financially. Last week I decided to get back to playing my Sith and discovered (thankfully, due to the F2P model, without paying for a month's game time) that Bioware MOVED ALL OF MY CHARACTERS TO A NEW HIGH POPULATION SERVER WITHOUT MY CONSENT AND THEREFORE CAUSED ME TO LOSE ALL OF THE NAMES THAT I WORKED SO HARD TO GET BY BEING A DAY ONE SUPPORTER.

So, there it is. The game was pretty fun for a while - had interesting combat, the best gathering/crafting system I have seen to date (your crew does it for you), had pretty good scaled PVP battles and decent graphics despite what people say - but this is just unforgivable.

The heart of an RPG is the role-playing - many of us have built characters and become quite attached to names over the years in various MMOs and offline RPGs - and to take your base community (the people who got you off the ground to start with) and slap them in the face like this is entirely unforgivable.

I will NEVER play this game again and i will have to think long and hard about whether or not to ever play a BioWare or LA title - especially online - ever again.

My the farce be with you...always.

Gameplay rates at a completely average 5, due to using a tried and tested method of most of it's predecessor MMOs. This is without taking the massive delay into account, praying for those who still keeps playing that it will be fixed one time.

But one of the games major selling points was it's focus on story, and damn was I disappointed: The writing feels so uninspired, that I simply stopped caring about any and every conversation in the game after approximately 10-15 minutes. Added on to this, the major arc was horrible too: *Spoiler* No matter what side you'll pick, the Empire loses.*end spoiler* Added to this, the terrible distinction between dark side and the light side of the force is even worse than the three prequel films. And playing an MMO where you and 2,999,999 other players are the chosen one, really isn't that entertaining.

Another selling point was that it is a fully voiced game, and that it is. But badly voiced. When you're not wondering why three guys in the same scene is voiced by the same guy, you're wondering how they tortured the voice actors to make them sound so uninspired.

In my final comments I will quickly mention the graphics and make a prayer for the BioWare dev team that graphics will never be the main point of a video game. Because if it ever will be, they will probably all end up in a guillotine.

First, let me start with character creation. You can choose one of two sides: Republic or Imperial. From here, you have to choose 1 of 4 classes: Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular, Smuggler and Trooper on the Republic side, and Sith Warrior, Sith Inquisitor, Imperial Agent, and Bounty Hunter on the Sith side. As you could imagine, every class has a similar counterpart on its opposing faction. From there, you pick a gender, race (which depends on your class choice), and then you can customize your facial features and body type. Customization is very limited: you must choose from a set of predetermined faces, scars, hair styles, etc. The races themselves are basically humans, with odd skin tones or maybe a few spikes/tentacles. You can't play a wookiee or really anything that isn't too different from Human (they even have a race called "Cyborg" which IS human but with various cybernetics on their face, as if this makes them a different species or something). So basically, in game, you look like everyone else. There isn't much different at all. Now, on to the great voice acting and cut-scenes. Every voice acted cut scene seems the same or at least very similar, and the animations of the characters aren't very intricate or exciting. In fact, they are clumsy and stale when they do move if at all. Watching these cut-scenes may be an upgrade from purely text-based quest givers, but sometimes you wish you didn't watch them: they are that boring and unimpressive. You just don't feel any more immersed because of these. The camera angle is also recycled throughout and remains stagnant in each scene-you never see your character in action apart from talking to the specific person. The animation quality lacks throughout combat and gameplay as well. Everything just seems to move awkwardly. The art style is okay, but nothing special. Sometimes you may question why they went for the awkward cartoon art style, but I would accept it in an MMO for the sake of latency in large battlefields (though other MMOs have proven that a higher quality graphics render can survive with massive amounts of people on screen). When you get to the action, you can't help but feel like you are playing WoW again, but without an "auto-attack" (though the replacement for this does not make it any superior). You use various skills and abilities unlocked by talking to a trainer, and these skills are largely "click on target, press button, wait for animations and damage to finish, move on to next ability or enemy" and it is extremely boring. In fact, much of the game resembles WoW in many aspects. As stated before, you unlock skills by talking to a trainer. You fight with stale abilities. You have your basic class archetypes: healer, tank, dps. For a game that was supposed to be so revolutionary, there is almost nothing new (save the dialogue/cut-scenes, but these aren't impressive as previously discussed). You do have a good/bad meter, much like those found in Kotor I and II, but they really don't make up for anything. Yeah, you can be a "good" sith or an "evil" jedi, but largely your faction is still the same along with your enemies and the game as if you played the typical good jedi and evil sith. Companions aren't that interesting either: they play much like pets in other MMOs, but they have back stories. I enjoy the space battles and the fact that you can own a starship, and that is probably one of the few reasons this game got a 4 instead of a 2 or 3 from me. I find the starship to be actually different, new, and fun, succeeding in being a revolutionary idea truly worthy of supporting and praising, as it has not been done in many other MMOs and still remains enjoyable, unlike the much-hyped voice acting. There are really no other qualities to redeem this game though, and it isn't fun. I wanted to stop playing in the starting zone in fact, but trudged on for God knows why. I've only really been impressed with Bioware for Kotor, and this game did not do anything to improve that mindset. They have lost their touch since those games, or maybe just fell behind and became irrelevant and outdated, and this game shows every bit of that. It is a stale, lifeless and all around poorly made relic of the past that doesn't fit well with new MMOs or even new games in general, and even the great classics of the past would mock it and shun it. Bioware just made a grab at the WoW and Star Wars audience, trying to get their money by shipping out an unimaginative game. I don't recommend it for anyone. Expand

The starting area was a blast (For the Imperial Agent, atleast), but once you get to the second planet, it becomes repitive very fast. The only thing that kept me playing on the second planet was a quest line concerning the major character of the KOTOR games. If we're already at the setting; Despite being the most expensive game ever made, the world is as unchanging as possible. No matter what you do during your quest, they make little, but mostly no change to the world around you. The optimization is also bad. Despite not having great graphics, some place (Dormund Kaas wilderness, for example) stutter so much that you feel like you're playing Witcher 2 on Ultra graphics, but the graphics are still medium. The combat can be very unresponsive, both because of lag and bad coding. The dialogue the Mass Effect wheel choice system despite it not belonging in the Old Republic games completely. You can also exit dialogues anytime you want, which makes it feel like casualized "Ohh, I angered the character, let's push ESC and try another dialogue option.". It's obvious they made an "MMO" because of one reason: money. The multiplayer part is either bad or non-existent. And this is the point where we have to ask: Wouldn't have it been better if they made an RPG that would have worked and everyone anticipated instead of an MMO that turned out a financial disaster because the developers had no idea how to make an MMO? In fact, maybe a KOTOR3 wouldn't have worked, either. They completely raped the story of both KOTOR and KOTOR 2 and tried to make a contiunity to those despite the game being 300 years later after those games. About the Free to Play option. It's extremely restrictive, a lot more than, let's say, LOTRO. In fact, I could do more in the Free Trial version than I could in the Free to Play version (a monumental WTF, if you ask me.). The only exception is the fact that you can get to maximum level, but the repititveness makes work of it that you don't get there. Expand

Just think about it for a second, What would you feel if after the ME2 they came out with a ME MMO and there you play with some "no name" character, where the first thing is to kill Commander Sheppard (the KOTOR series are not about jedi or sith fight, its about Revan and his heroic acts) or what would the star wars series be without Darth Vader? I read the Star Wars The Old Republic: Revan book and I hope one day BioWare or LucasArts or someone else will make a game of it (just like they did with The Wither) SO basically it's a good game but I'm disappointed with the storyline if I think of this as a continuation of the KOTOR 2, but if it's not then the story is acceptable. But since I can't think of the story in any other way I just give a 4. Expand

The cut scenes, acting, and dialogue are amazing but that's not what a game is, the game play is what the game is, and the game play is flat, it's WoW with a Star Wars setting, massively disappointing.

It almost make syou wonder why they wouldn't simply make a single-player KotOR game.

The bad: Absolutely everything else. I would almost suggest buying this game just for the class storylines if each plot point weren't separated by hours of quest grinding. At first the "fully-voiced" dialogue (about half of which is alien language so you'll be reading most of the time anyway) will be cool, but very soon you'll find yourself skipping through it all because it all breaks down into "kill X number of these guys" or "collect X amount of these things". There's a shockingly small amount of content, which is unforgivable in a day and age where there's a plethora of other MMOs with at least twice the content out already. As of this writing there are exactly two lmax-level flashpoints (dungeons).

Of course there's PVP, which is fine, although again the options for warzones are meager and get boring very quickly.

In a nutshell, this game fails to make any MMO element worth the (as of right now) $20 pricetag of the game. If you personally don't mind endless hours of monotonous grinding, I can suggest this game for you. If not, I can't in good faith suggest you spend your time on this. You WILL be wondering, as you kill your 347th rakghoul, "why, WHY can't they just have removed all these MMO mainstays and allowed me to just play through the story?"

The obvious answer is "because no one would opt to pay $15/month when they could run through a class storyline in about 4 hours." And I don;t know about you, but that's not a good enough answer for me.

This game makes me feel tired and listening makes me sleepy, waiting for my companions is boring, Why fly my ship if it fly's itself? where is my guild?? what is huttball !? Time to put this Wow lookalike to rest while im still ahead. this is my official review for this game. Awful game and a genuine insult to the Star Wars franchise. Generic, flawed game play. Walled environments. Bland missions. Non-challenging engagements. Now with added "Pay To Play". It's not a "WoW Clone" as some have suggested, this is an insult to the tired old World of Warcraft MMO. It's a game that had VAST amounts of potential, squandered away by greed and complacency.

The game is just uninspired with cut and paste content all over the place, cookie cutter content is par for the entire game. At least games like WoW which are far older, still try to innovate to bring new and decent content to the table, SWTOR is content to nickle and dime you constantly, give you piece meal content thats not only either broken, buggy or downright archaic in nature.

But what can you expect from EA? The problem with the game is that its boring, very slow pacing which seriously weakens the experience, this is Star Wars - its a fast paced universe, this game is exceptionally slow, and that isn't the lag either.... trust me, that lag is severely noticeable - and is perhaps the #1 reason for dying in the game.

Lets also talk about the bugs, its got issues. It took me the best part of an hour doing research, and editting the ini files just to get the game to run properly due to its infamous resolution bug.

I forgot to cancell my pre-order in the end but I put a lot of time into the early accessn the better part of 7 days or something.

    In Brief.

    1) It really is an unabashed WoW clone and it shows, the gameplay feels dated.

    2) Theres nothing specifically bad about the game but there is nothing outstanding either, leaving me indifferent to it.

    3) Storylines I tried thus far were poorly paced, dull and predictable. Infact the Bounty hunter one is full of cliches which would be tolerable if they were not such poor representations of the cliches in question. The great soundtrack is not even used to good effect building to dramatic or "tragic" events.

    4) Worlds feel dull and lifeless.

    5) Everything is on rails, areas have specific paths to your next goal and there is very little "getting off the beaten track" or exploring.

    6) Game engine is dated & fairly average, graphics only slightly better than KOTOR & KOTOR2 which are quite old games. This would not be such an issue if the gameplay was not so slow and boring.

    7) By level 10 in both Jedi knight & Bounty Hunter I was bored.

    8) pacing of the game is quite slow even for an MMO, they really want you to hang around and subscribe as long as possible.

    9) You could be forgiven for not realising Bioware made this game, it lacks polish particularly in the storytelling which is what Bioware games are famous for. Quite a dissapointing effort from one of my favourite studios. That said ME2 and DA2 were both had a similar lack of polish & care and i guess early signs that the quality control Bioware was once famous for was fading fast.

    10) there are several Free 2 Play MMO's using unknown IP's that I have enjoyed more than this.

I ended up selling my unopened box copy because the game is just plain boring.

Star Wars: The old Republic is Star Wars but mediocre, im not sure even going F2P can save it.

I admit it was hard for me at first because I played SWG Online on release and I kept comparing, I know they are different games but its still the same IP to me. Anyway, while it took some time - I warmed up to SWTOR. The plus side is the storyline which is quite enjoyable, and if you focus on that, it is worthwhile. Regretfully in the end I must say that the storyline is the only thing I enjoyed.

I suppose I should say I did not engage in PVP... I never do, in any MMO I've involved myself in, I generally avoid PVP whether SWG, WoW, EVE, LOTR, etc. Anyway, back to my cons on SWTOR. The space missions are entirely guided, you cannot really control your ship, and you'll find the map has only about 3 varieties, it got boring quickly. The environments are just boring and uninspired I really couldn't care what planet I was on. In most MMO's I can pick an area or world that I enjoyed. WoW - I loved Darkshore and Stranglethorn Vale (Before Cataclysm which I hated), SWG - Corellia... You get the drift..

One thing that really killed it for me was it did not allow me to play a middle ground Sith. At ALL times I was REQUIRED to play light or dark. Even some of my choices, while I thought were just good strategic choices, were considered evil, or good... seemed to me to be a massive hole in the storyline process, despite certain... revelations in the game that I won't mention . They further press this point in your equipment as certain items and relics can only be equipped if you are one side or the other... this was not how I wished to play my char, and yet was forced to do so I could equip certain items.

Other issues I had were minor but significant to me, like not being able to create my own waypoints on the map... Bioware's classic conversation selection was a killer for me too where your char does not say what you actually wish them to. I really mean this, you select the option for your char to say, "That doesn't work for me." and your char says, "You have failed me for the last time!" . I'm thinking... "waht?" Misspell on purpose.

After my month ran out I chose to transition back to F2P. I chose to do this because there were other games I wanted to play though I had intended to at some point come back and try other storylines, happily thinking I would again subscribe. By this time I was maybe level 47, had not finished the storyline yet. To my surprise the heavy handed status returned. Although I was considered "preferred status" I could no longer have a title, all my rested XP that I had saved up was removed, my Piloting lvl 3 skill was downgraded to level 2 (after putting down a lot of credits for an extra 10% speed oooooh... ) some other skills that I obtained and spent a lot of credits on were removed or downgraded. My purple items I had obtained... nope, you don't benefit from those enhancements anymore. Heck, I couldn't hide my helmet any longer. This was so over the top for me that I just detached from it, I uninstalled the game, and will never touch it again. Bottomline is if you are willing to suffer and persevere through the nonsense of F2P then you can enjoy the storyline. For me I won't come back because beyond the storyline its just uninspiring and the heavy handedness of their F2P/Subscription system is over the top.. This game could have been so much better. If I could, I would give the storyline a 10... but everything else a 0, so I've compromised and given a score of 2. It is storyline, and nothing more.

It got better once you get to the first Flashpoints and group missions. The game started actually being fun after trudging trough the first 10 or so levels.

It was all good until I hit lvl 16 and Bioware/EA whatever decided to KEEP MY ACCOUNT HOSTAGE.
Now all I get when I try logging into my character is this line:

"To continue playing this character, you must validate an email address for your account. You may validate your email by visiting https://account.swtor.com/user/info."

It just takes you to your basic information page on swtor.com. No apparent place to to any kind of validating. My e-mail is already there and I have even bought stuff on the account while being registered with that e-mail. Inputting a different e-mail address sends this to the new e-mail address you use:

Clicking the link in the mail only gives you this error: "An error has occurred.
Your email address could not be validated.

Poorly balanced, too easy to level in (casual play results in 50 in about 7 days of /played without ever being able to finish a single planet without drastically outleveling it.) The instances are fun in normal mode as you level, but nightmarishly badly balanced for class and performance in Hard mode. The PvP warzones are a joke, as there are only three and you have to do them over and over.

The latest patch just cements that this novice dev team really has no idea what makes an MMO work. Avoid this game if you're looking for a new MMO home. Enjoy the ride to 50 with each class as a single-player co-op game, and then put it away.

But for the most part you are alone and that's fine for a single player game. But SWTOR pretends to be an MMO.

It's clear that BW designed and built this game as a hybrid knockoff of WoW and it's own singleplayer games.

Also, it just seems that nothing you do in the SWTOR world really matters.
BW's almost doctrinal stance on the solo story design is a mistake. Their stance on solo gameplay as a whole, in an MMO, is a mistake. SWTOR's group content is INCONSEQUENTIAL. If I did 5 fp's total, that would be a lot. There is no need to do them. You do not need to do them to advance in any way. I made it to 50 on one toon and 20 on another in 30 days without them. You say I missed out on great gear??? Really and with what consequence? NONE! And I was constantly ahead of the leveling curve right up to Corellia which is 47-49.

The group content is fun that being FP's and Op's but it's old and tired and in the end doesn't matter as everyone will get good enough gear or better gear without trying so there is no point to it.

People on the forums tell you do the FP's, OP's, crafting and such but none of it really matters in the end. Crafting : you will loot better gear while PvPing or running regular quests , fps or ops, so no point. Gear is easy to get so everyone will have it so again no point to ops or fp.
At end game the game really becomes pointless especially on Ilum as Republic.

That's one of the biggest things I come away with is that the game is too easy, too much good gear drops for nothing, no one needs you and you need no one. No middle game content that would make someone slow down. No real Epic questing going on. It's just more like doing assignments. You will get everything you want guaranteed. No risk whatsoever. First off I'm a star wars fans, have been for a long time since the originals came out originally. Now I must say I was a bioware fan until they joined with EA, I just started playing Mass effect, coulnd't stomach Dragon Age, and I've only played a few minutes of Kotor. As soon as I started playing Mass Effect, I'm like ohhhh this is where SWTOR got all their crap from. So bioware really took no iniative in anything in this game, it's a slice and patch job and it shows in so many ways in this game. I could care less about graphics and character creature, so I won't give my opinions on those, but I will say I'm running a high end system and this game set on the lowest overall setting possible is trying to burn out my video card with 70+ C temps. The rest of my box and CPU run well below 40C but for some reason this game is very GPU heavy. Bugs and stuff like that are pretty common on release so I have no problems with bugs on a new release, they are fixing the bugs which is nice, but while they are doing that, they've left the game and things like balancing toons in pvp, and open world pvp or lack there of kicked it to the curb with small fixes that literally have done nothing to improve the game. What I do have a problem with in this game is the overall direction they took with it, instances single player RPG that you are paying for. At least GW was free for the same cocept and sadly I'd put GW1 ahead of this game still and problem still is innovation wise.

Boy do I have to shake my head at the ppl who give this a 10 saying this is the best MMO out there and how much better than wow it is, it is wow with companions, blasters=bows, lightsabers=axes/swords. Other thans putting a new face on something, giving you ships, with lack luster space missions that are all completely and totally linear. And being able to travel to different planets, which if they really wanted too, could have just put them all on one planet anyway, they did a lot to try and do the "hey look shiny objective" But came up very, very short. This game is a huge grind, I've 10 total toons on 2 servers and I've done the same missions 10 times on about 5 different planets, what happened to playing all these different toons with different experiences, about the only difference is your unique quest, and playing light or dark, which on the imperial side is a joke btw, since half the fricking companions hate light side choices, republic side I'm finding is a cake walk, light side choices equals instant win with companion.

I can't believe bioware had the balls to make ppl pay for this game, don't be fooled by the 10's ppl, if you hated wow, I don't care how much you like starwars this game will not satisfy you. After disappointing runs by Mortal online, xyson and now Swtor, hears hoping Guild wars 2 can actually pull of some of that innovation they are talking about. Keeping my fingers crossed for something that isn't a wow clone

I must say, Bioware have been very innovative with SWTOR.

The only good things in SWTOR are the voiceovers & Huttball. As it stands right now, this game does not feel like a game that is supposed to be an AAA+

I went world to world every time enjoying the content, racing against my guild mates to level 50, excited to be among the first to master the end game content. Then I hit 50 and hit the great big emptiness. Yes there are dailies and there are raids. Thats it, the pvp is a joke. Suppose for a moment, you push yourself through the boring grind, the over sided power of the Sith or worse than that the over sided power of Battlemaster Armor with the expertise on it, what are you rewarded with? I'll tell you, on my Sent it was a horrific looking set of armor. It looked like a 5 year old made a cross of anime and iron man armor. Really, its not hard to design a bad ass looking Knights of the Old Republic armor, heres the equation Robes+Storm Trooper Armor = Utterly Bad Ass Jedi Armor. Who doesn't think the armor Obi Won and Anikan rock in the Clone Wars cartoon is awesome looking? I know, only some many variations and such but come on, you can't work with that really? Even if you want something different, what they put out was not it. The craziest part is the armor right before level cap, at like 45-50 was pretty sweet looking... This is not to mention the numerous bugs and glitches. I think that something as simple as the armor designs looking like junk shows just how lazy they got at the end of designing the game. To be honest, for the past couple weeks I have been telling myself, I gotta log on this week, I gotta get on this week. Yesterday I asked myself why I have to log on and renewed my Rift account. Hopefully Bioware will pull its head out of its arse and address the problems quick but sadly I doubt it. Heres a drink to another lost Star Wars MMO... Expand

Now, I know you can't expect a game to live up to such legendary hype as this game had, but this game pulled a Duke Nukem Forever and gave us a game that was not even half decent. This game is going free to play in september for a reason, bioware is losing subscribers and is trying to save the ship from sinking, but alas, it won't work, mainly because this game sucks balls. This game fails right off the bat for one reason, it focuses mainly on story, so it's basically a single player rpg with multiplayer added on, The genre is called Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game for a reason people, because it's a MULTIPLAYER rpg focused mainly on MULTIPLAYER. This game couldn't have been saved even if it was a different company for that reason alone. But aside from that, there are quite a few reasons this game is bad. Let's get to the biggest problem with this game first, which is that Most of the class stories just plain suck, especially on the republic side. The republic stories are that of a cliche mary sue character (The jedi knight), a guy who has no real motive to be helping the republic (smuggler), a badly written martyr character who's quests are similar to the jedi knight's (the jedi consular), and a generic, cliche special ops character (The trooper). So, republic stories fail right off the bat. Sith empire only has 2 good stories as well (The bounty hunter and the Agent), Both of which are sort of cliche, but are still fun, the bounty hunters story being one of betrayal and the imperial agent's story being one much like James Bond's . The other two classes are just generic mustache twirling villain stories (Sith warrior and Inquisitor). The next reason that this game fails right off the bat is that the way this game is structured makes it feel so empty and yet so claustrophobic, every zone has invisble walls you can't pass, restricting exploration, you also have to take a speeder bike everywhere almost every time to get to the next zone. The third reason that this game fails is that the community is non existent, probably due to the lack of players. The nail that seals the coffin on this game is that the flashpoints and pvp just suck ass, the flashpoints are mainly generic imperial/ republic space ships or space stations, and the pvp is just so unbalanced it's not even funny, atleast with wow it's a 50/50 split on who wins, but with swtor, it's usually imperials who win. TL;DR version: **** game, end of story Expand

At release there were bugs and glitches everywhere; some couldn't play the game at all, game freezing during load times, guild and party chat were not showing, end game fp's and op's were broken, customer support is non existent etc.

I can kind of understand Biowares motive in getting the game out before Christmas but this game was NOT ready, Bioware and EA should be ashamed of themselves, there was literally zero communication from the devs about the bugs and general problems people were having and that was most likely due to the holidays but there is no excuse for that.

This game has potential to be very good but it really doesn't offer anything over the more established game that is World of Warcraft other than the fact that it's Star Wars, light sabers weee! Overall some what decent game with a lot of work ahead to really differentiate itself from what is already currently available.

It was advertised as revolutionary, the MMORPG to beat all MMORPG's (but what MMO ISNT marketed like this?) and it is anything but. Instead what we have is a buggy, poorly optimized WoW clone with little content. There are problems with every facet of this game except the story, which is actually pretty good. The engine is awful, it chugs on a beastly gaming computer, high res textures almost never load, the animations are choppy and stilted, abilities never activate when you tell them to, you get stuck in seams and blocked by strange invisible walls in the middle of thoroughfares. The game still feels like it needs a year of beta testing. The gameplay much like WoW's in virtually every way except that it doesn't flow as well, the animation and ability delay issues make it feel awkward. The Zones are linear, the quests are the same kill 10 bandit quests as every MMORPG (but with some dialogue sprinkled in) and the typical MMORPG milestones like mounts and advanced classes are all present. There is very little innovation. The stories are the only good thing about this game but they aren't enough to save it. Also, I suspect that the focus on story is what causes this game to feel so linear. And not just linear but limited, no raiding the opposing faction, world PvP is virtually non existent beyond the odd gank here and there, the environments have little to explore and are boxed in by massive walls everywhere. PvP in general is quite dull and broken due to ability delay and unbalanced classes. The classes themselves are a problem. Compared to a game like WoW with many classes that each feel very distinct and interesting (as well as there being many more) in TOR there are only 4 classes essentially, and only two of them are viable in PvP. All in all I say don't bother getting TOR right now. If you are desperate to play an MMORPG play WoW, it offers more content, better gameplay, and more classes. Maybe in a year or two once TOR has patched the game significantly it will be worth playing, but right now there are far too many issues to keep the game from being fun. Expand

Running through miles and miles of sewers shooting the same creatures and people over and over and over and over is not a good time. Doing the same thing in a building and then reaching a "boss" character that you can't kill and then have to realize you need to play the whole quest again because you forgot to get a weapon that was hidden under rock is tedious, not fun. Then when I saw the price to buy the game ($59 at the time of writing this), I realized I wouldn't spend that much to play this game, but the world is worth exploring a little bit. But you have to participate in every single little bit of fighting -- by smashing all the buttons -- and gets so repetitive that it really only goes so far for me. Then I saw it costs $20 for a limited amount of time to play per month! That's when I stopped playing altogether. It's not worth spending $59 one time, certainly not an additional $240 to play it for a year. As of this review, many people are leaving it and playing Massive Effect 3 instead, so the servers are not really full these days. I'm not so sure they'll be coming back, either. I won't. Expand

So the game, its content and features are certainly a 3.0 for the lack there-of as a massively-multiplayer game that has a $15/month subscription. It's more like a series of Star Wars the Clone Wars mini-games with absolutely no semblance of massively-multiplayer purpose. But the game is a multi-user single-player lobby-system rpg, though for that it should be buy-to-play, not a $15/month subscription model.

Just to name a few, and generally speaking, PvE is 5/10; shallow - linear - static - absolutely nothing massively-multiplayer about it, and very much like the heavily linear PvE game-play of Age-of-Conan. The voice-overs is where the points come from, but again that is what I would expect in a single-player rpg.

PvP is non-existent. Its a lobby-system third-person shooter within a confined shoe-box of capture the flag or control-points that offers no value or purpose to the over-arching republic verses empire struggle for control within a massively-multiplayer universe. It's a redundant short-lived purposeless activity of 10 v 10 lobby-system shallowness.

Massively-multiplayer universe is not persistent or influenced by your actions at all; your influence is non-existent, so when you do accomplish a clean-up of bad guys in favor of your faction in a story, nothing in the environment has changed what-so-ever. This is a very static and meaningless world.

Crafting itself is a mini-game that has absolutely no value compared to what drops from general and elite mobs in the world. The importance of Community-driven and incentivised Crafting and Merchandising doesn't matter as in this game, blue, and rare item drops from non-elite mobs and elite mobs drop at an astounding rate, diminishing the value of community-centricity and value of crafting and merchandising. So this where I would disagree on the importance of Crafting, rather than the mechanism for it. The importance of it upwards to mid-game is demeaning and non-existent, but an interesting mini-game.

There is not open-world player housing or player-controlled merchandising.

There are absolutely no server or community-wide dynamic events; none what-so-ever, which should incentivise and motivate one faction to thwart an enemey invasion or control of a territorial choke-point which comes with it risk of loss or substantial reward for winning. Non-existent.

Warzones are few and far between; 3 battle-grounds where there is no reward for winning. They are mind-numbingly repetitive and shallow.

Space combat is x-wing fighter; shallow and cheap at it's core.

Achievements are non-existent, as are challenging titles. Everyone's a jedi, but at one point in Beta I could achieve a "Vicious" title as a Republic character for leaning toward the Darkside. . .that has been removed as one example of several other achievements that have been removed which could 'distinguish' your character from someone elses'.

Character customization and distinguishment from an opposing player is non-existent. Every character playing looks exactly like someone elses, as do titles. You cant customize your character with distinguishing looks, appearance, title, dyed armor or clothing or color-crystal sabers, because there is no breadth or depth to any customization mechanics, features, titles, or modifications that are anything but few and which provides no visual distinction.

Be warned that if you purchse this game, you are purchasing a Single-Player lobby-system Knights of The Old Republic 2 with Cooperative-Online game-play elements, not a Massively-Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

Overall the "make your own story" idea that Bioware sold is nothing short of a lie- it's not true, want to be a smuggler? You dress like Han Solo, act like Han Solo, have a wookie, and fly a old version of the millenium falcon, Thanks for coming out. The whole epic storyline just isn't there, this is almost a 1:1 port of other games "Youre a hero, the most important in the universe, but we cannot seem to get you a decent suit of armor, heres some cloth armor there Commando you look like a doorman. Aren't you feeling epic?"
Biowares 'customer serivce' is GARBAGE, their game is so buggy it's insane. The launcher BARELY works, the assets either don't download or don't install, and there are so many bugs it's crazy. Don't expect any help from them, or the community who thinks that any problem is from your computer which must OBVIOUSLY be a P.O.S. I've spent over 12 hours trying to get this game to work, called the customer service at least 7 times, reformatted my computer, and followed every guide online. The programming is an utter failure, what is a great game when you can play it is crap when you can't.

Absolutely no environment t of "choice", you pick a class and are totally guided along a story line and path. Some enjoy the voice overs and cut scenes, but after a while they are seriously annoying and you wind up spending more time watching cheesey dialog in lieu of actually playing a game and making your own way. I really don't want to have to wade through a third rate Saturday morning cartoon when trying to get to some content. Oh, almost forgot to note that the space combat is a joke, seriously, they threw in some rail based space stuff that I was playing back in 1996 that is repetitive, boring and annoying. Expand

Honestly this game is plain boring, maybe Jedi Knight's storyline should be boring? And most of the time the "storyline" is just text added to the standard "kill 5 rats" quests. Also for a product of such price i wish it had less bugs, dropping through Star destroyer's floor during pvp match is kinda annoying. Canceled sub after one week.

Overall the game is simplistic and lacks real choice in either character development (from a story perspective) and with regards to perks and skills (gameplay perspective).

Combat is repetitive, linear, and has been done better before. There is only a few options on which to conduct a battle, with little real options and each battle feels VERY similar. This is my biggest gripe in that the core gameplay has been done better before, and offers nothing new to the extent that I played this game extensively for about two weeks and quickly tired of it. I didn't even finish my free 30 days. PVP doesn't feel right. Ability delay and a general clumsiness pervade and the war-zones are terrible (BIOWARE what were you thinking with Hutt Ball.. no Sith or Jedi would play something like that!). There is little to no open world PVP and certainly no incentive to engage in it. I think in my many hours of gameplay I got into 1 open world fight - now I admit I didnt go looking for it that hard but surely it should have found me on a PVP server? I chose a PVP server to get ganked yet was never forced or inclined to engage in open world PVP at all. The worlds feel empty and soulless due to the sharding issue but it is more because the game feels designed the game to play like a single player game with a chat window attached. How could chat bubbles not be included? I just cant fathom the decision making that went into that. Imperial fleet is probably the only place the game feels full but there is no connection between people speaking in general and PC's which may as well be NPC's. I played up to 40 as a Sith Inquisitor and I found the story to be well voice acted but for the most part boring and generic. Thats not including the standard "go here, kill 20 things" quests which are fully voice acted - to the games detriment, at the end of the day it just extends the grind. I would have loved to stay around for longer in this game. I love the Star Wars universe and I really wanted a MMORPG to engage me. Unfortunently I'll take engaging gameplay over voice acting and "story" any day.

Yes it has a few new trappings and cool ideas thrown in but the core mechanic that makes up 90% of the game is still the same thing as all of the other mmo games. The novelty factor wore off after a couple weeks of playing and I found myself doing dailies, doing the same routine every time I logged in and I quickly fell into a sense of familiarity with this game. That's when it hit me; I was bored before my free 30 day subscription was even up.

All the good things in it I liked are the same things I liked about rift, world of warcraft, everquest and so on so I'll just cut to what I didn't like about SW:TOR.

    1) The engine and game isn't optimized at all. Even my computer (which is way way above reccomended specs and will run any game on the market with headroom to spare) never ran it smoothly, especially at any higher end settings. It always felt like it was running just a little too sluggish. Bioware said the massive complaints about performance were due to so many people running inferior computers but that isn't the case really. The games engine simply isnt optimized well enough. The graphics are subpar as well. I am never one to think that good graphics will equal good game but given a game where you're basically repeating the same actions day in and day out it should atleast look pretty while doing it. WOW looks better to me and it's a dated engine, but it's wonderful use of color and art direction makes it stand out while TOR has this underlying feel of looking like a dozen other games.

    2) It requires you to use EA's origin service. This is ultimately why I canceled my subscription and won't play this anymore. Origin was the last straw for me in my list of complaints. Origin IS spyware, it tells you it is in the EULA you agree to when you agree to the terms and conditions to install it. It also was recently changed to say you can't sue EA. There is a reason why germany (yes the whole country) took action against Origin because it invades privacy. I detest origin and again was the last straw in my choosing not to play battlefield 3 anymore. And as someone tried to point out in the comments section that origin isnt required, yes it is and the gams official FAQ says so. http://www.swtor.com/info/faq#170974

    3) The game is a theme park much like WOW. Once you start playing you're constantly guided through the game via quests and so on. It never felt like I got to explore anything on my own or discover anything because the game was always holding my hand and telling me where to go. There was no sense of awe, no sense of exploration, no sense of discovery because you're constantly having the game tell you what and where to go next as you progress through the game. It's like there is a invisible path of quests you have to follow through from level 1 to 50.

    4) The game is too easy and that makes most people you meet insufferable to be around. Much like everyother mmo out now the game is geared toward allowing in anyone who wants to play to get maximum subscriptions. In order to do that you need to appeal to the lowest common denominator by making your game as easy as you can get away with. Much like wow it takes little effort to level up and do things aside from the occasional time you need a party to do something (which makes it feel inconvient). You never get this feeling of accomplishing anything by overcoming a challenge because the game has no real challenges or penalties. The problem with a MMO like this and it being easy is that when it becomes easy then players get bored easily and bored players become obnoxious players and obnoxious players are players I don't want to play with. There is a reason why the majority of the player base for like WOW are petty, obnoxious and sarcastic brats and why the majority of the everquest player base are friendlier, kinder and more helpful and that reason is because WOW makes players lazy and bored by being way to easy to play and everquest requires work and teamwork. Even death has virtually no penalty, there is no real reason to be careful or thrill of being almost taken down. In this if you die it is just sort of a ho-hum experince and you go on not really caring, thus there is no element of danger.

    5) Everything feels like one big corridor. It always feels like you're being funneled through this corridor from one objective to the next. There is no sense of a large scale and all the areas feel so small and cramped. Once you have checked out a area it feels even smaller. At first everything was fine but it didn't take long before all the area, dungeons and so on all just start feeling like little compartments in a rat maze.

The pluses- story line. I am a PVE and lore nerd, so I have to confess- BW delivered great voice overs, dialogues and story. But after a day or two I started looking at it with more attention, so here is my thought on it: 1) PVE (story, voices etc. and lore) is one of the best in the market; 2) Design, arts - WORST there ever will be. I mean, if the Jedi Temple - a cornerstone of the whole IP and franchise - looks like a huge 3 stores tent with homogenic textures on its walls and one statue, copy-pasted on each side of this tent like 30 times, WHAT WOULD YOU EXPECT OF IT? It is the fundamental game art!!! Every instance, house, room, anything feels like having copy-pasted floors and walls, sometimes windows. Every city feels so too large and empty. Like they say in my country in general you can not watch this without tears; 3) Graphics. The graphical execution is another disappointment! I mean, WTF!!! The 2012 title is released without DX11 support. Oh, wait, it didn't even have anti-aliasing on launch!!!! Add multiple graphics bugs (like colorful fences on the sky) etc. - and that's just the start! Take a look at fountains, rivers, lakes, water-falls. The water implementation is simply horrible, it looks like transparent slow falling jelly! TES 3 Morrowind (2003 year!!!) had a lot better, realistic and beautiful water implementation with shaders version 1.0!!!; 4) The races - this is to be left with no comments. You have humans with 3 or 4 body types, and 6 different face texture packs. And 6 face texture packs means six different races!!! That's as horrid and pitiful as it takes. 5) Sound. Mixed. Sometimes the ambient are good, sometimes ok. But they are not even close to overly-expressly epic WoW ambient, which in my opinion is pretty average. 6) World. There is no open world. There is just rails and tunnels. You can not climb on that mountain or hill. You can not fly over that tree. In fact, you feel like you are some stool, which BW is taking through straight intestine all the way to the end-game - i.e. the anal orifice. There is no freedom to explore the world. And thats's the biggest minus to me engine-wise. It even overwhelms the graphics, which can be fixed in nearest future, and arts, which can be fixed in long-term (provided that game is still alive, which I doubt). But this closed world is the game engine issue (hello, cheap Hero engine) and can not be fixed. Hey! A 200 million dollars game uses weak, slow and cheap Hero engine! Even CCP, which started with couple of thousand bucks in the basement, developed a beautiful open world game engine, perhaps, because they treat paying customers with more respect. How are people supposed to believe this world is real, when all they see is not a freedom to explore, but straight intestine. I seriously started to feel like I have been turned into the proctologist's office, but not entertained with the game. And lying BW promised it will be open, un-instanced world!!! 7) PVP. Didn't test, as I am a PVE carebear; 8) Customer support. There is nothing to say, really. CS is the final nail in the TOR coffin to me. I opened a ticket by the December 30th and NEVER (!!!) got an answer from the CS. That is zero. And finally, the worst that happened to me - right before the end of "free" 30 days the button unsubscribe disappeared! How very convenient for BW right before re-occuring paying period start!!! and that happened on Google Chrome, IE, Firefox- all 3 major browsers I have!!! So the only option to unsubscribe was to call BW, stay on hold for over an hour, than talk to some Indian rep for 20 minutes so he understands what you want of him??? And on this resource I have also found evidences that BW deleted official forum threads about missing UNSUBSCRIBE button and link to page for subscription cancellation. Never going back - that's for sure. Like they say in Texas- double cross me once and it's a shame on you. Double-cross me twice and it's a shame on me. And I ain't that naive, partner. ;) Oh, about the CS. Like I mentioned if you have an issue don't even hope it will be fixed in reasonable time. BW claims that all the reps are very busy. But all the posts on the official forums are moderated, every inconvenient for BW post (concerning UNSUB, bugs, lack of respect to paying customer) is deleted within a minutes, people are being banned and warned for odd reasons in no time. So BW employees find their time to deal with such matters, which is why there is not enough time to actually solve tickets and help people! P.S. All this is just top of iceberg. Even voice-overs, dialogues and story does not compensate all misses and fails, not even for a story lover such as me! 3 points to the max, but with such CS and attitude towards paying cows - 0!!! WORST DISAPPOINTMENT since Master of Orion 3!!! Expand

Honestly this game was decent in the first few weeks. But once you hit 50 and there is no more story there really isn't much to the game. You have hardmodes and raiding and broken pvp, if you want all that then why not just stay with a much more polished game like Rift or WoW? This game is not innovative.

There are far too many things for me to list. Not only can I not remember everything, but I'm afraid I would exceed the 5,000 character limit. I'll keep this brief and to the point by referencing the major issues.

PvP - Not horribly imbalanced, but dated. There is an ability delay caused by your characters animations overriding your commands. The system does not prioritize player input. This is terrible design and causes unresponsive play.

Economy - Totally borked. All professions, but two are completely worthless. Credits (gold/money) are easily exploited by bots camping chests that respawn on a set timer. Bot logs in, loots chest, logs out, waits 7 minutes, repeats. There are also professions that give you credits outright; no item trading or gathering required. This is easily exploited by botting.

PvE - Nothing innovative here. Just the same as any other MMORPG you've ever played. Insanely buggy max-level "flashpoints" (dungeons). There are bosses that cannot be looted and instances that cannot be completed. Holy trinity (tank/DPS/healer) still intact, but only four players are required for a flashpoint. This puts even more stress on the requirement for healers and tanks. This is only gets worse with...

Server Population - Most servers are dead/dying now that they free month is finished. In response to launch queues, Bioware decided to open up more servers instead of raising the population caps. People left in droves and many servers are struggling to progress.

Faction Imbalance - Republic is getting destroyed by Empire players.

UI - Not customizable. There are so many things wrong with the UI, it's hard to list them all. Your debuffs on your target look the same as other player's debuffs. Not a single thing can be moved aside from the chat window, but there is no where to put that anyways. Your buffs/debuffs are too small. There is no combat log. No macros, which means no mouse-over healing, etc... No target of target. There are many more problems.

MMO Factor - It's not an MMO. Worth the $60 dollar purchase, but definitely not worth $15 recurring monthly fee.

The distance to run takes up roughly 70% of your gaming time. This is not a joke or an exaggeration, this is what I timed over a week of gameplay. So naturally this makes for a hideously boring game.
The combat is generic and dull.
The storyline is weak and becomes highly diluted due to the obscene amount of side quests and running about.
The graphical style and quality is shockingly bad. The graphics are just poor, and the style is very cartoon'ish which is absurd seeing that Star Wars can be extremely dark.
The space combat is about 15 years old in play style and animation. i would be embarrassed to have released it how it is.

However, once I delved into it I was quickly aware there are really not many options at all. You can choose between 4 VERY limited body types none of which are particularly appealing to me from the male char standpoint, so I choose to make a female character. I logged into the game, and the graphics seemed very held back to put it lightly. The aesthetics of the graphics engine are there for the most part, but it didn't feel 100% like I was in the Star Wars universe. I made a Sith Inquisitor, so I started on the planet Korriban. The first thing that happens is you get off a ship that lands half glitching through the landing pad. The dialogue was a very very nice change of pace being able to actually hear what you need to do, and understanding the impact it has on the characters was very cool, initially. After getting done with the first conversation the focus of my attention became the UI. The UI is nearly 100% fixed with almost 0 customization options. The keybindings always reset when using new characters, and for the first 2 hours of playing the game I could not get over how clunky and weird jumping was. I always hop around in all the MMO's I've played, and I was never so bugged by how weird the jumping is. The help menu tutorial options always pop up no matter what and you must click and exit each and every single one to put them away. About 2 hours into the game(about level 7 - 8) It became very clear very quick the questing dialogue did nothing but mask the standard MMO grind. The majority of quests(aside from the main planet quest chain and class quests) are just the same go kill this / collect 20 of these for me quests. The voice acting was good, but I never really paid much attention to it outside of my class quests. It was very obvious several voice actors were reused throughout the game in the sideline questing, and the responses from my own character became very repetitive and confusing. My choices were made always to either gain companion affection or Dark Side points. It really didn't feel like I was making choices rather than just choosing the ones that improved my score for the aforementioned options. I would often choose options I had previously gained companion affection with, and I would not gain any at all. After finishing Korriban, I used the space bar liberally throughout the rest of the game. The companion system was amazing. First getting your companion at the end of the planet made you feel invincible, but as the game progressed having a companion present was almost mandatory to complete quests. The TLDR summary of my questing experience to 50 is: Standard MMO grind with a lot of phasing and a bit of flavor in the class quests. At 50 my repertoire of known bugs and issues with the game had expanded greatly. PvP is nearly unplayable with Ability delay, class imbalance, gearing, and playing with many players below 50. There is no competitive small scale PvP which makes gearing up seem pointless. However, even if it is pointless it can also be nearly impossible. PvP gearing is based on 'random' gear boxes. You have only a small % chance to actually get anything AND it can be the same thing you may have already gotten. These issues with PvP, UI, and Aesthetics are all easily overlooked. My main issue is with the patching and updating process SW: ToR uses. I am currently unable to log in the game as well as many others for various reasons. For all of these reasons I have unsubscribed my account, and I am waiting(at the very least for them to update the patching process so I can play the game) to resubscribe. Overall, the game is very fun with some really good highlights to it, but they overlooked a lot of serious red flags. I am a huge fan of Star Wars, but I am not a huge fan of throwing money at a game I can't play and the refusal to help the thousands of us who can't as well. This almost alone is the reason for my poor review of the game. Expand

If you want to play it to play a single player game experience in a given class? Go for it. Entertaining in this regard _once_.

If on the other hand you are lookign for a game that has actually invested in deep, engaging and compelling multiplayer experiences? Look elsewhere. The dev team has clearly missed the mark. A perfect example of this is treating PvP (something they have devoted entire servers too) as a pure afterthought, by their own admission, that it 'wouldn't be popular'... In a two faction game about warring empires in the star wars IP? Not Popular? The class to class balance is non-existent and the gear and craft system was clearly never thought about past level 45 out of 50. The efforts to address both of thse are being mishandled while they try to sell their 'Legacy' system as a major feature, which is pure fluff and promotes more single player mechanics than team ones.

There was a lot of quality put into this game for look, feel and atmosphere. Sadly not even a fraction of it into the game itself.

Missions which while well presented have the depth of Attack of the Clones (though better acting). Lack of duel spec's which make doing anything as a healer or a tank slow without the DPS options. As for healing (I normally play healing classes), thats hard work on a dodgy laptop with a tracker pad, lacking mouse over healing really leaves me quite drained. Space combat which was beaten when I recently had the privilege of playing a 1980's Star Wars Arcade Machine. (I won't even mention the annoyance of lacking a mac client at launch. I suspect this will mean that we will have a badly imported client at a later date.) But worse than Gameplay feels the community. Communications seem poor and only used to complain (Normally about WOW, though I did like the discussion I saw by people still burnt out on RIFT). Guilds seem non-existent at the moment leading to both a lack of community and camaraderie. I had high hopes that guilds would be treated well with the pre-registration of guilds however so far I have not seen it in game. Bioware could have spent another 10 years getting things and I feel it is brave of them to release something so we can see some of what they had in mind. I wanted more but I got quite a shallow single player game with pretentious of being an MMO. I will come back in the future for the occasional month and hope that enough has been provided to make me want to stay, but for now I won't waste my time. Expand

When I think back to neverwinter nights and Mass Effect 1 and Dragon age 1, I can say I am an avid Bioware fan. However, this game disappointed me to the point that I occasionally wonder why I like Bioware games. What is absolutely unacceptable is the customer service. When I asked for help regarding having lost my security and therefore being unable to enter the game, they did not do anything. In fact, there is a fairly well known pattern that the customer service tickets are neither closed nor kept open but rather simply deleted without even so much professionalism as a form letter.

This would not be such a big problem if there were not so many bugs and balance issues. In terms of balance issues, the players on the sith side in the game tend to be so devoted to the game that in most pvp fights there is no chance for republic to win unless you outnumber the sith. Unfortunately, since republic players seem to quit the game when they get to level 50, this does not happen much, making the Level 50 planet pretty much a dead zone, while the Sith wait around to kill any republic players who come. This provides no enjoyable experience for either side.

It may be a lesser problem is the servers are populated well, but the player numbers has substantially dwindled since opening and you would be lucky to find 20 people on your entire PLANET.
There is a pvp warzone area that automatically gathers people to play pvp, but you'll find that there are so many hackers and speed boosters that the games are plainly unfair. Any of my customer service tickets regarding hacking in the game have, or course, simply been deleted without result. I would say that you can even things out by hacking and boosting yourself and using exploits (such as the /stuck exploit that returns full health to you in pvp) also, but what I want from the game is not to see who can hack better.

Remaining to do in the game is the standard item farming grindfest at level 50, where drops have recently been decreased in frequency so that your daily grinding quests require more time.

The one redeeming quality is that the beautiful graphics are absolutely stunning, and the sound is gorgeous. But I'm definitely a gameplay person, and I would rather play something that gives me a sense of accomplishment and fun as opposed to play a beautifully rendered variant of complicated game of pong.

I enjoyed certain parts of it and the interface and UI was very friendly as somone who has played WoW extensively. I had no problem adapting to most of the controls. My biggest issue was the amount of lag that was prevalent in certain areas. My system runs games like WoW and Skyrim on Ultra without a problem and I was very frustrated by the lag issues even in a fairly unpopulated questing area. The Story and zones were fun and enjoyable if on the small side as far as zone size and variety but the lag and gameplay bugs made it frustrating to play, based on that I would have to give it a negative review untill those issues can be resolved. If those can be fixed I would probably rate this a 7-8. Expand

Got bored at level 30, its wow except worse.
They blind you with shiny videos and screen caps, but the game is on par with a 2001-2005 mmo.
Its fun for a bit, but once that new car smell fades, it quickly starts to stink in the room.
Basically, its a single player mmo with bad visuals, terrible community, and ran by liars.

Really says it all about which kind of person you should be listening too.

It is to be expected, starwars fans are pretty fanatical. Fanatical mentality leads to zealtry which leads to blind love. But good for them though, they get to enjoy something long-term otherwise impossible.

PvP is a disgrace and PvE aside from the voice overs is nothing to write home about. EA/Bioware have been peddling this game nonstop while exercising the integrity of a sleazy used car lot salesman at every opportunity.

The game is just under 4 months old and 85% of the servers are already nearly abandoned due to customers cancelling out despite EA/Bioware's propoganda to the contrary. At the rate things are heading, SWTOR will end up being a F2P title by the end of 2012.

It's a shame this game came out instead of a high-quality KoTOR 3, which would have united Exile's (I refuse to use that name given to him/her in that heresy called the Revan novel) and Revan's story.
Also, the "free to play" marketing is a lie. If you want to play a highly inferior and annoying "pay now and you will be able to use this item" spam infested version of the game, then go and play the "free" version.

Hilariously broken, buggy, and seemed to seek only on trying to pillage some money from people burned out of WoW through a starwars mask. Quality varies extremely between class stories, voice acting is just bad, and when I hit max alot of encounteres were bugged beyond belief. The worst raid looting system I've ever seen, too. Haven't played it in a long time, might be better. Probably isn't.

I'll start with the bugs. I've never played another game (MMO or otherwise) where I've stumbled into 4-5 bugs in under 2 minutes. You'll spend 50% of your gametime on forums finding guides and looking for ways around these bugs. Not recent guides. Ones that are years old.

As for the story, there are so many plot holes it's ridiculous and some of the questlines and dialogue seem as if they were thought up on the spot.

Another thing that annoyed me with the story is that it's inconsistent when playing in groups. You can play parts together and it's all fun. Then on the next questline, one of you doesn't exist or you just can't complete the story together. (Revan xpac + KOTFE xpac)

Knights of The Fallen Empire- the new expansion, starts off very interesting and cleaner than any of the previous content, but it just seems to have dragged on and seems half packed with filler. There delivery and the content of the chapters really destroyed this expansion for me. It isn't even over and I'm bored. Too bored to finish it because I've quit. It's almost as if they run out of ideas for a chapter and say "Just throw more Skytroopers at them."

It seems like there's passionate people at Bioware trying to make a good game, but the result has been a contemptible money grab.

If you like micro transactions for bag space and action bars, this is the game for you.

LucasArts generally exercised greater quality control of Star Wars games than most licensed properties receive, though that didn't necessarily translate into titles that were actually good. I've played a few other Star Wars games in the past, and while the SNES platformers were pretty good, this one is even better. Knights of the Old Republic may just be the best game in the franchise, and succeeds at being a top-tier RPG even if one has no interest in Star Wars. BioWare did the license proud.

I wound up bailing out on Star Wars: The Old Republic well before hitting the level cap, but not before digging into it more so than any other MMO I've played. Even if it is an unhappy marriage between two wildly different game types, the fact that it kept me hooked for so long at least counts for something.

A good game. It pays excellent homage to the film series (even though it's set before the movies), and is a really solid MMO.
