It takes me back to the 80's. If EA has made this game a Starship battle game alone i would have been happy.. Instead you have these annoying missions in the middle that cant decide what type of game they want to be. I still play Battlefield 4, such an amazing game, then EA take that engine and turn it into a Star Wars game, and a bad one at that. The multiplayer is terrible also, so im not bothered about the microtransactions as will never play it. Would grab it on sale on Origin, but never buy it fill price as the only decent thing about it is the Starship battles and the rest is just Meh! Expand

Some of the best graphics and sounds you will ever experience in a game. That being said, the business practices of the loot boxes is unacceptable and possibly criminal if the European courts have their say.

I eagerly selected him and decided to pursue some melee carnage - after killing 20 mobs I couldn't really give a **** about anything else in the game. The combat was boring and stupid, no skill level at all. Rush forward, press attack over and over, maybe use a force push ... hold block for some incoming lazers, rinse and repeat - after 20 mobs I really couldn't be arsed. They seemed to all spawn from nowhere and after a while I didn't really give a **** about any of it. The sounds and music (i.e. atmosphere) all felt like an out of sync soundtrack. Pile of ****.

Ok, some people might get upset that I didn't play the campaign, well I wanted to jump into the combat and find out what the 'end-game' was going to be like. Well **** I didn't care about anything after about 3-5 mins of playing, except wanting a refund which is exactly what I did. Maybe I demand more from games but 15-20 years ago this game would have been ripped apart for the gameplay alone.

The problem with current reviews is that most of the kids playing now will practically play any old **** so it really doesn't take much to please them, and these companies know it.

Average shooter game with Star Wars skins.

    **** if you ask me.

I've played 40 hours of various game modes; campaign, arcade, starfighter assault, galactic assault and heroes vs villains. This review is ignoring the lootcrates/progression stuff. Even ignoring that, it has big issues of its own.

Firstly, the campaign is a solid "Okay". Its not great in terms of gameplay and its a little cheap when you recognise large areas are copy and pasted from the multiplayer maps. The story is good. If you enjoy Star Wars stories then you'll probably like it and its always nice to play as some of the icons of the movies. Although it does seem like huge parts of the story are missing. There are times when you finish one mission, get a cutscene and suddenly it's been several months and thats it; onto the next arc.

Arcade mode is mostly a gimmick. The AI is dumb and for me, there was just no fun to be had doing the challenges. Makes me miss Galactic Conquest a whole lot more....

Heroes vs Villains is probably the mode needing the most teamwork and rewards it pretty well. Plenty of fun to be had although my impression is that the Dark Side is much, much stronger than the Light.

Starfighter Assault... It was the biggest reason for me getting the game after really enjoying it during the beta. But after a few hours you really notice how dumbed down it is. The sheer amount of bots really diminishes the sense of accomplishment of killing an enemy and when you come across and actual player, its really down to luck as to who sees the other first. You die incredibly quickly and no matter the match-up; if someone is behind you, you will die and there's very, very little you can do about it.

Galactic Assault can be fun. However the game tries its absolute hardest not to be.
The maps are genuinely some of the worst I have ever played in a shooter. When you have teams of 20 vs 20 and there are single objective points which need to be held, all ideas of strategic planning and teamwork goes straight out the window. It descends into "throw grenade, run to cover in/near the objective and hope for the best". Takodana phase 1 is the worst offender for this but Kamino is another, but at least that is split between 3 main corridors.
Then there are other maps where phases are just impossible to win for one team. I have never, in ~33 hours of Galactic Assault, seen Republic win phase 1 of Kashyyyk or the Rebels win phase 1 of Hoth. The best you can hope for is to make a dent on the attacker's ticket counter and completely ignore the objective.

The game overall, visually, is stunning. But it is seriously lacking and the more you play, the more you begin to notice is actually quite bad. For example, Kashyyyk: it looks amazing and during the starting sequence you see lasers and explosions and it gets you hyped but after playing it a few times you notice that these scripted events deceive you and make the game look more dynamic than it truly is. The same goes for most of the Galactic Assault and Starfighter Assault maps. There's a huge amount of scripted events covering over the fairly dull and repetitive gameplay. A whole lot of invested development time making the game look good, while not a lot has gone into making it play good.

Also you will need in game money when going up against a team that has pretty much maxed out their abilities. To be able to achieve weapon and class milestones to progress an to be reward with in game money so you can buy class and hero crates . Of course the reason for this is that the game was designed from the ground up with MTX in mind to entice people to spend money for in game currency so they can apply it to their character builds. Also matches are starting without filling both teams to 20 players each. And playing 17v10 for a couple of mins is not fun. And for a game that focuses on the multiplayer aspect more so that story telling rpg side it really isn't worth it because of those glaring faults. The game could be really enjoyable to where you could play endless hours, but there are to many balance type issues.

The campaign was just over 4 hours long and ends openly. Gone are the days of buying a complete game at launch. While the campaign was enjoyable it didn't do anything new or shocking and you see everything coming a mile away. The progression system is beyond broken in this game! You use credits earned by playing to buy Heroes (Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, ect) however you also use these same credits to buy loot boxes that randomly give you cards to upgrade the normal class characters. So if you want to play as Darth Vader and you are currently saving all your credits for him that means you are not able to upgrade any of your other characters. They have since lowered the insane prices of Heroes, however they also lowered your rewards for completing the campaign, and also limited the amount of credits you can earn in arcade mode. Yes you heard it correctly, they limit the amount of progression you can EARN in the game by PLAYING the game to cause you to pull out your wallet and buy your way to top of progression. Another note to end on your performance does not matter in this game. If you have 0 kills 50 deaths and do not play the objectives you earn the same amount of credits at the end of the match as the guy who gets 50 kills, a 45 kill streak, and only 1 death. Unfortunately, the progression and loot box system totally undermines the multiplayer experience. I hope Disney takes note of this fiasco, and awards the Star Wars licensing rights to a proper game producer that will keep fans happy, instead of one like EA who tarnishes the Star Wars franchise for so many. The game itself is good, it needs some additional tweaking but overall it would be a solid entry to the Star Wars universe if not for the blatant, and downright villainous microtransactions implementation. Players of the deluxe edition or early access were free to spend as much real money as they wanted/could afford to gain an obvious competitive advantage over other players; in a AAA title multiplayer game, that is downright destructive to the game and community. I hope that EA, Dice, and Disney all listen to the fans and do something to make this right. Until they do that, PLEASE do not support EA by buying this game, you're encouraging this kind of shifty behavior in our industry and hobby. Expand

Absolutely bass ackwards at best. Great fix EA. Don't get me wrong... the actual content in the game is stunningly gorgeous, hands down the best of any Star Wars anything. It has plenty of great moments and very nostalgic, IF you can get a good match. Currently the game still doesn't even have lobby rotations of any kind.. all the good players end up on one team in a server and that's that. You usually NEVER get on a decent team because all the openings are on the **** teams where people have already rage quit and you take their place on the shyte team. So much fun... When you finally get on a good team and are able to get some points, after about 3 rounds it becomes stupid boring and you can literally just sit around and goof off.. which is fun sometimes I won't lie. Essentially either I find myself rage quitting from impossible situations or bored out of my mind due to other team being full of completely terrible players. WTF DICE.. this is Dice' fault, they are notorious for this and completely inept at figuring out a solution for 0% balancing. I'm giving this game a 6/10 from the aspect of a good player able to at least potentially overcome **** situations and have a bit of fun... and I'm giving the game 0/10 for casual players who want to just have a good experience from the perspective of a trooper.. you better off watching the movies and won't hate yourself as much. The bad:
    - frostbite engine: worst feeling player movement physics in the history of AAA games
    - maps somehow immediately feel stale after only a few weeks of having the game
    - Balance in large modes is completely ruined by heroes. About a minute into any match the heroes will be up and will be for the rest of the match. They're so horribly balanced that you are totally screwed if you're anything but another hero - there is no defense nor offense. This leads to heroes snowballing entire games, and a good hero player can effectively tear around the map with impunity. Heroes are so inexpensive that even after dieing they can just play the same one again - there is no limit.
    - starting the game with no characters leveled is a horribly punishing experience. The base classes and those that aren't leveled up are at a severe disadvantage. So have fun several dozen hours in game just leveling up things enough to be playable.

Thats a clear massage: Start as soon as we release overpriced, overhyped game or grind for weeks as an underdog and get owned by people who not only knows maps and mechanics better but also outgear you and outlevel your abilities... I was full of optimism when i started multiplayer, but its unbrearable, unfun experience. Constantly being owned by enemies who happens to always have topped deck. After few days i give up. The leveling of stuff is to slow and 99,9% people that kill me shows max levels. I could stand being outplayed by people who knows game better, having months or years headstart, but combined with their superior stats of their guns and abilities i just cannot enjoy it.

I dont know how it was before. How strong was the p2w and how messed up user experience was back then, but today it feels like abandoned, dying game that they made a big promotion for, to lure and milk just a bunch of more players (condemned to being underdogs and meat for the veterans), as some stupid form of rehabilitation in eyes of the veterans to feel better.
Grind was much longer before? I cant imagine anything longer than there is now. Not for new players, who get stuck with default s**tgear and are thrown to fight veteran players. What feels like throwing pebbles even if you headshot a lot, and get fired back with a freaking battleship's cannon. Irritating, frustrating, demotivating - those words best describe new players' experience in Battlefront 2.

Also the 40player battles are unoptimised and some maps are unneccesarily heavy on the CPU.

Also boring, uninspired campaign that feels to long when you play it. And after you realise how bad MP is for new players, you realise why the campaign was that long. It just contributes to the 24h game time you have to ask for refund.

It have its moments tho, and being mix of battlefield and SW universe deserves some extra points.

What good dogfight should be. The objectives are good too. I think it has a lot more depth in this mode, compared to its predecessor. All in all, this is a great game, at its core.

The problem, is they take a solid core and then shred it with a progression system that is confusing, slow (unrewarding), and built around paid lootbox progression.

I was unhappy with the paid loot boxes going in. The game is Pay to Win. Anyone that says it's not doesn't understand the concept or are 100% fanboys. You have a very large number of "star cards" you can get. You need a certain number/level of star cards, to open your slot 2. Now, I have played through the entire single player mission, about 7 hours of multiplayer, and 4 "arcade" missions. I have unlocked level 2 cards (out of 3 levels) for 1 character. That is all. ALL of my multiplayer time has been playing the 24 man spaceship missions. I've earned probably a dozen or so loot boxes in that time. That is all. After spending 20 minutes or more in a match, you get some credits (I am getting between 100- around 350... with most games giving me a little over 200 credits) The one saving grace, is progression challenges. As they run out, your ability to really earn many credits does as well. This system, right here, is broken. It is painfully obvious you are supposed to supplement your earning of loot boxes with paid loot boxes. A $60 game should NOT be additionally monetized how freemium games are. That is double-dipping. Choose one or the other... if you use both, you are exploiting your customers. Oh, and I want to go back to progression in Arade. After playing 5 games, I was told I got 0 credits for the last game (no warning) and there was a 2 hour lockout before I could earn credits in arcade again. This is a travesty. Though, I do admit, I found arcade mode to be pretty lame. But again, they lock parts of the game out, for earning credits legitimately, to force you to purchase more. (It's painfully obvious with paid loot boxes out.

On top of the 100% broken progression system, the game just has bugs. In a game tonight, everyone was complaining about rubber banding (and I crashed numerous times, or instantly blew up for no reason). On top of this, you get disconnected randomly after a match and sit waiting for a new game that never comes... You then disconnect and rejoin to be back at the beginning of the map rotation. "

This game has a lot going for it. It is a solid shooter with a very well done Star Wars dressing on it. Then, with a few major bugs and a terribly broken progression system, the game pretty much does a face plant. This game really needs a demo to see if you can look past the broken sub-systems enough to enjoy the game. But, as it is, they don't offer one. I'd say pass on this game. If it comes down to $25, it would probably worth a buy. At $60, you are being ripped off. At the higher tier, you are really being ripped off.

I'm not a big multiplayer guy. I passed on the first game because it had no single player content, so theoretically, I'm the guy they're trying to win back by adding that content back in, and honestly, I feel tricked by the marketing.

The single player campaign of this game is a joke... the writing is mediocre, the gameplay is dull, and the premise that was advertised is abandoned pretty much immediately. Add to all this, that it was incredibly short... clearly a tacked on feature, not a core experience for a 60$ price point. All in all, it just wasn't any fun. The MP is fine, but nothing really sets it apart for me from anything else I've played, with a Star Wars re-skin. I got bored after 10 hours and wandered off to play something else.

I wasn't expecting a Witcher 3 level experience or anything, but if you're going to offer single player, you can't make it shorter and less detailed than your average Call of Duty snooze-fest...

Graphics, combat systems and everything else is greatly improved, but still, we have lootboxes, in-game money transactions after we paid for the game. Everything could be just fine, but it's not a cosmetics inside lootboxes, it's items, skill improvements and even more. But still nobody would complaint about this if people could get everything for 100-200 hours, but right now you need toGraphics, combat systems and everything else is greatly improved, but still, we have lootboxes, in-game money transactions after we paid for the game. EA temporarily turned off their "pay2win" system and it changes totally nothing, because they will add it again. Don't buy this game, don't listen to EA, they are greedy. Expand

Apart from the great Starfighter Assault mode Battlefront II is a mess of conflicting ideas, uneven mechanics and of course questionable monetization practices. DICE is facing long months of salvaging the game and the studio’s good name. [01/2018, p.32]

Even the tinsel of the Star Wars world cannot hide the silly story and the boring singleplayer gameplay, or the necessity to accumulate the credits in the crate hunting in multiplayer. Battlefront II pleases as a genuine shooter in the beautiful scenery, but EA should deserve a slap into the face for their mad progression system.

There's fun to be had, but for every step towards the Light Side, there's a foot stuck firmly in the Dark Side of bad design decisions. [Issue#269, p.52]
