Star Traders: Frontiers is a fantastic open adventure in a space in which we can basically do whatever we want. The final product is much more than the (sometimes not perfect) single mechanics involved.

  1. It’s an exceptional space sim that’s happy to let you just while away the years, smuggling spice and getting into bar fights, all while this elaborate and galaxy-shaking space opera plays out behind you. It’s shining a spotlight on the Bossks of the universe, sort of just getting on with their job and sometimes being tangentially related to important stuff. [Bestest Bests]

The "problem" with this game (if you even consider it a problem) is that it is stunningly deep and the more you pay attention the better it gets.

This title has so much going on under the covers it's easy to miss. I've written up a more "complete" review over on Steam, but suffice to say this is in my Top 3 of ALL-Time.

To give a quick example: A review here says too much dialog, grinding and using the Auto Training option. 1) if you consider reading a paragraph of content regarding a mission too much content. So be it. 2) I've logged about 250-hours and never once did I feel like I was "grinding". In fact I would say the leveling seems rather quick paced for the amount of things you can do. 3) Auto Training is a mistake IMO, what you should realize is every crew member, their "job", their "talents", their ability to contribute to your SHIP means you can literally customize every aspect to the way you play. Trader, Pirate, Spy, Military might...Ship Abilities, Ship Stats...every crew member combines together to enhance your Ship the way you want it to be.

In addition to that everything YOU decide to do, subtly (and sometimes not so) impacts the universe around you. And like I mentioned once you actually stop looking for eye candy and speed clicking your way though everything you'll really start to see how you can manipulate almost every single aspect of that universe.

Finally the only reason I gave this a 9/10 is because version 3.09 release last week...I believe that was update #187 for content. And they still are producing absolutely top notch changes. I figure once they are done then it should be a 10...until then with each update it's an ever better 9.

Sooooo after somewhat around 50 hours I'm in for a review.
Where to start? First of all this is a game that screams "MOBILE!" in your face.
Sooooo after somewhat around 50 hours I'm in for a review.
Where to start? First of all this is a game that screams "MOBILE!" in your face. And for good reason. It's pretty related to the mobile version and it shows in many of the UI elements.

Okay, you're still here? Good. Forget everything about the mobile stuff for now and try to give this game a chance. It's complex, deep and has tons of features that might be worth your time. Turn based combat and progression, crew and ship management, trading, piracy, a decent story and plenty RPG elements. It's all here. You can custom pretty much everything...from the hat of your quartermaster to the plating on your ships hull. Of course you need to earn money to do many of the things you want to do and there's plenty of missions, bounty hunting and...yeah trading to be done. The only thing you have to adjust to is the turn based pacing. Sometimes it's nice and relaxing, some other time it might be boring to the point of "ugh I want to do something else instead". It's difficult to balance this kind of game and the random encounters can be annoying at times (wish there would be something that would allow us to avoid them if we wanted to).

The encounters and sometimes slooooooooooooooow pacing are the biggest issues I'm having with the game. You want to get from A to B but are stopped by two or more random ships...that are not even hostile but take a lot of time to get out of (some animations take just too long...I mean seriously...why by the void does every freaking encounter have to be anounced by a long animation of the ship showing up? Ugh...I know...I know, it's only a few seconds but those seconds add up! Seriously I could go and take a...I could do something else with those wasted seconds instead).

The pacing IS slow at times, and it's no X4, Star Citizen or anything that gets a price for it's graphics, but if you're like me and need something more relaxed sometimes, give it a try. I probably will invest another 20-30 hours at this point...maybe even more since I haven't progressed in the main storyline too far yet, so yeah...it's good. Get it if you like turn based games...in space and a combat system close to Darkest Dungeon (in crew combat).

I'll start with the good which won't take long.

The Good The music is nice though pretty generic. Good concept if poorly implemented.

    Good concept if poorly implemented.
    Open world gameplay.

    The Bad.
Awful GUI clunky and difficult to navigate.
The artwork style is really naff.
Grindy levelling system - but at leasts there's auto training, if you trust it to make good decisions.
The worst part about this game was the extensive dialogue, I didn't know I had signed up for a space opera when I bought this game. They put a lot of of effort into the storylines at the expense of everything else it seems. If you enjoy reading pages of complex second rate drama in a computer game then you can give this game an 8.
All the factions are human which means you don't get the feeling you're actually in space apart from navigating around a 2D space map.
