Certains stages gives you a very poor sens of perspective. And the Tomb puzzle is absolutely atrocious. That said, overall the gameplay is pretty tight. The items are getting a bit useless around the end, and the fishing part is kind of cheating on the levels. But even that is acceptable for players that don't want to grind forever. I give it 85%. I enjoyed it a lot. It lasted around 22-24 hours. Expand

But, the pop-in is really aggravating, BUT you can just go on GameBanana and find mods to increase render distance, therefore reducing pop-in. The story is amazing, with all the intricacy in one singular bag. The secret boss is very easy once you memorize all of it's attacks, they also help you if you die too much on it, you go from 3 lives to 5 lives, very beneficial! Though I did not go there as once I memorized The End's attacks, I no damaged it. This game is just astronomical, in nearly every regard, hard to find games like that these days, which is no more than a detriment to how much fun you want to have IN a game. Glad there's some hope to be found. This being one of the main candidates.

In open zone however, Sonic feels quite responsive to control and moving around feels quite smooth. The boss fights are also the peak of the game's gameplay, however, I feel like they could have bumped up the health of those bosses a bit, giving you more of insentive to gather the seeds to power up Sonic as well as giving you a challenge at the end of each island. The overall story is a pretty mixed, but the characterization and course correction of certain characters was handled so well. I particullarly enjoyed how the writers handled Eggman in this game which actually results in a pretty sad conclusion to his arc in this game. Overall, if this is the new direction SEGA and Sonic Team is taking this series in, I feel very confident about Sonic's future. Expand

The open world is fun to run around in, but doing any of the tasks within are boring. The combat has a lot of "needless depth" to it, where you CAN do all these bigger moves and combos, but your basic abilities more than suffice. The enemies are generic and bland as well, variations of "small shiny black robot with pointy arms" to "giant shiny black robot with stompy legs".

The enemies are generic and bland as well, variations of "small shiny black robot with pointy arms" to "giant shiny black robot with stompy legs".

The zones themselves are boring and are all based on the awful Boost gameplay that people think is good for some reason. It is however, still leagues better than 06, Forces, Unleashed, Heroes, etc.
The story is another "I'll go save all my useless friends" throwaway, as Sonic games almost always are nowadays.

The music is okay, but the cool-factor is outweighed by the fact that Sonic himself is not as cool as the music/lyrics try to make him out to be. Better to just download the music and listen while playing a better game.

A large story-based content update was announced so there's a chance it will improve the gameplay some more, but there's a whole bunch of cosmetic/misc/junk stuff before that comes out that will likely interest very few players.

To top it all off, it has Denuvo. This causes the game to microstutter at times. Even if it didn't though, I still don't think this game would be worth pirating at this stage. A decent improvement after the last 17 years of disappointment, but mediocre at best.

I wish the Cyberspace levels were longer. I also don't like some aspects of the writing--in particular some of the subtle changes to Amy's personality. I also don't like how meloncholy the music is in some of the open-world zones. It has a vibe almost like the Witcher 3, which is weird for a Sonic game.

Otherwise, a very fun open-world game. The music for the boss battles is AWESOME.

Pleas fix this Sega. The ending is also not very good honestly. My advice is to switch to easy mode before the last boss. It's not hard, just annoying and boring, and you get the same ending regardless.

All that sounds bad, I know, but that really is about my extent of the problems with the game. The story, ending aside, is genuinely good, characterization is so much better than it has been, and this game has some of the most fun, cinematic boss fights in the series yet. The soundtrack goes so hard, and I'm here for it. This game makes you feel so powerful. The bulk of the game, the open zones, is INCREDIBLY fun despite the above setbacks, and the gameplay loop fits Sonic in a way I never thought possible. After playing this, my biggest complaint is really just that there isn't more - mainly, more characters and cutscenes. Playing as Sonic was so fun, and I'd love to see Tails, Amy, and Knuckles get a piece of the action too!

That said, I can't say how much I ruined my sleep schedule on this game. First time in a long time I've been like "Okay, I'll play about an hour" and then it's suddenly 3am.

TL;DR: This game has it's problems, but it's also one of the most fun, immersive, and enjoyable games I've played in a looong time. It's easily an A-Tier game to me. With a little polish and a bit more content, this game could easily be a 9 or even a 10.

I finished Sonic Forces in about 4 hours. But I can't say the same for this game. I'm about 13 hours in and just started Chaos Island, so far I have to say this is the most engaging Sonic experience since Sonic Adventure 2.

Ian Flynn is a fantastic writer and really captures the spirit of Sonic and his friends. If you're a fan of the Adventures games or the IDW Sonic comics, I would absolutely at the very least watch the cutscenes. This is the best written Sonic story we've gotten in about 20 years.

The music is a lovely mix of electronic for Cyberspace and Rock or Orchestral for the open zone and battles.

As for the gameplay there is a lot here that does and does not work and I am happy to provide an organized list of the good and the bad:

    THE GOOD:

-Open zone puzzles and challenges are easy but very fun and rewarding. IF anything they're designed to test your aptitude towards understanding the control scheme, which is very clever considering this controls like no other Sonic game.

-The combat is some of the best combat I've ever seen. The combos and new abilities really give Sonic a whole lot more freedom in battle. The guardian battles are fun and engaging and the incidental enemies provide a decent enough challenge that make you want to fight them.

-Exploration and platforming in open zone invokes one of the most liberating experiences I've felt in a Sonic game ever. THIS is where I feel Sonic games need to go in the next 10 years. Freely traversing the world, fighting bad guys, picking up chaos emeralds, and finding secret areas.

-The titan boss battles are truly epic. Some of the best fights I've played in ages. These are fast paced, action-packed brawls that you just HAVE to experience for yourself. Imagine the final boss battles in previous 3D Sonic games but you have one for EVERY island.

-You can configure Sonic to your liking in open zone areas. This is seriously the BEST feature in my opinion and gives this game the most versatile settings I've ever seen in a Sonic game.

    The bad:

-The Koco quests are incredibly clunky. I understand their need to be incorporated into gameplay to serve the story and the challenges are fairly simple. But these quests can be incredibly tedious as the Koco just barely respond to your movements. Thankfully this is only a small portion of the game.

-Some of the non-Koco quests feel a tad unfinished as some of the hints give you little to no direction as to where to go. This isn't a major problem as it's pretty easy to figure out, but it would help if this was improved considering this game is meant to be played by newcomers and returning fans.

-The cyberspace stages are unavoidable but thankfully are over fairly quickly. Sonic Frontiers realizes Morio Kishimoto's vision for Sonic Forces, the player can complete the stages as fast or as slow as they choose. The biggest differences here are that you can unlock chaos emeralds faster and skip some of them by playing all the challenges (red rings, x number of rings, time trial, etc); the 2.5D stages are no longer the norm in favor of either 2D Rush style stages or a full 3D stage. Most surprisingly the boost has been stripped back. No longer are just able to just boost through enemies, rather boost serves as a tool to increase your speed. This can be incredibly frustrating if you're used to the proverbial boost-to-win tropes of previous Sonic games. Your adjustable physics in the open zone unfortunately do not impact cyberspace which is sad as the physics in the cyberspace feel fairly slippery in comparison to the open zone. While critics claim to love linear boost gameplay, I feel as if this style has overstayed its welcome and would like to see it phased out in future games in favor of the open format.
-Memory tokens. This gives me trauma flashbacks to Sonic Unleashed's Sun and Moon medals, THANKFULLY, these aren't hard to get and you may find yourself enjoying the search for them.

As a longtime fan, this game has to be one of the most engaging experiences I've had with the blue blur since Sonic Adventure 2. That really says a lot considering I've been very critical of his previous outings.

    7.8/10

I really hope SEGA keeps going in this open world direction and Ian Flynn keeps writing more sone games. It could be a 10/10 game if there was no pop-in, cyber-space physics were better, true final boss wasn't an Ikuruga minigame, and many more nitpicks making this a 8.5/10 sonic game. The only reason it says 9/10 is because it won't let me choose 8.5/10.But anyways, this is must play sonic game for both sonic and non-sonic fans. Expand

Looking forward to seeing more of this in the future. Also the game is huge. Been playing for nearly 15 hours now and still only on world 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I absolutely adored it from start to almost finish, not a masterpiece for sure but extremely enjoyable, especially the first two islands and especially in my case, the second one Ares.

While the third one Chaos was aesthetically and visually pleasing for its volcanic setting, the 2D sections ruined a lot of the fun I had playing the first two, it still was pretty enjoyable albeit slightly annoying, I genuinely wish Sega would just drop the 2D sections all together because they offer no form of enjoyment whatsoever in sonic.

As for the final "Island" which we all know it's basically the latter part of Kronos, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, certainly more enjoyable than Chaos' multiple 2D segues. However the one main critique I have is that Sonic team DEFINITELY needs more employees because I heard they were only 60 at most, hence why the game was cut this much because of Sega's stupid "not wanting to wait" decisions, I'm still thankful Izuka fought Sega to give him another year because good lord it would've been a disaster if he couldn't convince them.

Now, the story wasn't Unleashed or black knight level of quality, or hell even the first two adventure games quality, but it's way way WAY better than what we got in the Pontaff era, and to that I say, thank you Flinn, for once in a whole decade of mediocre writing, I actually saw every cutscenes without cringing about the awful dialogues.
It was super relaxing seeing them just interact naturally in this weird environment, especially the Sonic and knuckles dynamic, you can tell they genuinely care for each other even if they bicker a lot.

The exploration is extremely satisfying and I found myself immersed so much that I just didn't want to let go of the Island and go to the other one, it was a blast.
The cyberspace levels though..not so much, now some are really good but then you realize it's literally the same level design as previous Sonic games and it's just sad thinking that the best parts about the levels were old levels that were already enjoyable on their own with their own aesthetic instead of green hill again for the love of god, but overall it was alright, and either way it's just bonus content anyways so I'll give it a pass.

The bosses were the highlight of the game, we need and I mean NEED this type of boss formula in future sonic games, because between the music that literally made me almost tear up of joy and the amazing spectacle that Super Sonic vs the Titans was, it honestly more than delivered, it's insane to think that these weren't final boss type of bosses because they're too good..

Which makes me question the decision as to what the heck was even the final boss? It was so out of the blue and really weird, and that's only when you play the hard mode, if you're on easy or normal you'll just get a QTE for like 10 seconds and the boss is gone, it was extremely confusing and I guess really displeasing given the normal bosses were the best part of the game.

Overall though, I spent 22 hours total because I wanted to 100% and it is quite satisfying seeing all the maps fully unlocked so I enjoyed 100%ing it. And I gave it a 9 because, many people would say it's a 7 but in terms of enjoyment in my personal opinion, it's above that. Not a 10 but not a 7 either, so a 9 would fit perfectly in what I experienced in the game (I'm talking about it as a sonic game, I'd give it an 8 if we're talking about it being a standalone game)

And I'm hopeful that future games will be great if not even superior of what frontiers showed us, and please sonic team, no more green hill, chemical plant or sky sanctuary, nor 2D sections, just be an original fully 3D fame and I guarantee you, many people will enjoy it.

Sonic frontiers is a a nice change of pace with its new direction in design.
    Pros:
-An open world experience full to the brim with different activities and nice mini bosses with different combat mechanics.
-I really had a blast just speeding through the islands, taking in the environments and just enjoying the beautiful backgrounds.
-But what really stands out for me is the combat, sonic really needed this for the longest time and they nailed his combat to my shock a very well controlled and easy to pick up combat design that's not complicated at all. I really hope sonic team improves on this system.
-Another stand out spotlight moment is the music, goodness, whatever SEGA makes Sonic music they really know how to nail it. I really enjoyed the music, calming, but also the rock music is just......AMAZING!!
-One more spot light, the super sonic bosses........EASILY the best that super sonic has ever been. Pure Coolness, awesomeness, and very well crafted fight cut scenes. I just loved it, and the rock music going along with it, just pure amazing.
-Story is good, not amazingly great, but a lot better and put together then forces.
Now the cons, not that many, but must be said.
    Cons:
-Camera is not as bad as previous 3D sonic games, but if caught in a wrong angle, it can sometimes mess you up. But still needs improvement, but its better then previous.

-Not alot of moves, by the time i got halfway through the game, I had all the moves, and the moves are cool, but there aren't a lot of them.

    - Final boss should have been a lot more cooler, but i won't spoil it.
    - Islands are good, but the last two use the same assets as the first island.
-Cyber space, now where do i go from here? Ok, they are not bad, they are not long and annoying either, simple and short. But Sonic team really needs to let go of reusing past stages as filler for their games. They need to get back to using and creating actual special stages like in the old sonic games, While its good to remember past glory, its over staying its welcome. Now is the time to move on from that.

    Overall:
Sonic frontiers is the positive step that sonic needed in his 3D career, now from this Sonic team needs to build on this system they have created and improve on it.
I really liked it, and I would recommend this as a sonic fan to others.
I will give this a solid 8 out of 10.

Sonic Frontiers is the best Sonic game in the entire franchise! This game in it of itself is a masterpiece regardless of Sonic games! The story is the best out of the whole franchise, and the voice acting is very good, Roger Craig Smith did an amazing job as the voice of Sonic! The music in this game is incredible and it's the best music in the entire series! The Super Sonic fights against the Titans were amazing and some of the best fights in a video game! Thank you Takashi Izuka and ESPECIALLY Morio Kishimoto who created this MASTERPEICE!
The 5 years wait was definitely worth it.
Thank you SEGA and thank you Sonic Team!

I grew up with this franchise and have lamented for over a decade that the games just aren't any good anymore. It was sad to watch my favorite character as a child turn into a bumbling laugh track desperate to appeal to the meme audience. And that's fine and fun to an extent, but that's all Sonic was for a very long time.
Then comes Frontiers, I was really worried about this one. Open

It was sad to watch my favorite character as a child turn into a bumbling laugh track desperate to appeal to the meme audience. Then comes Frontiers, I was really worried about this one. Open world games are usually some of my favorites and half the reason I ever enjoyed 06 was the big hub worlds to just run around in. Now I get Sonic in a big open space and that's the main point of the game? That sounds amazing!
The only reason I'm not ranking this a 10 is a very simple one. The jump should not kill all of my momentum. It really hurts the platforming overall. If I could maintain my speed into a jump and even some of that dreaded M word this would be an easy 10/10 for me.
Let's do it to it, and hope we get more Sonic of this quality in the years to come.

This game is incredible. A really masterpiece of games. I missed so much this Sonic more mature with its story. Something tells me that they add money from the movies to make a better budget to make this game possible. Love it!

Amazing Game! The best and longest Sonic game I’ve ever played since Unleashed.

If Sonic Frontiers Showed something is that Sonic Team still has motivation and ambition, for a lot of people find the game a bit janky and it is...this a new territory for the Team, however like everyone are saying, it's the step on the right direction to the blue blur and Sonic Team,
    Pros
-Sonic, even if he has a slow start on his speed, he's pretty easy to hand, adding a plus on more

    Pros
-Sonic, even if he has a slow start on his speed, he's pretty easy to hand, adding a plus on more casual people or places were it requires precise platforming
-The combat is pretty fun once you gain access to the new skills Sonic has.
-The progression system works pretty good, it doesn't feel forced, since you can go without upgrading any of the attributes.
    - Characters knowing their flaws and strengths making a good character development, showing that they can be better
-The islands are well structured, including every aspect of it, except the 4th Island
-The story is one of the best Sonic ever had, includibng every aspect about the origins of the Chaos Emeralds and some aspect that also affect the lore of Sonic Adventure 1
-Sonic being able to do more that one thing is a big step forward instead of being just a 2 buttons game, this made one of the greatest experience for me.
-The mini games and missions are pretty fun, Big¿s big return with and amazing mini game
-Amazing soundtrack with a big variety of Rock, techno, orchestral, metal and lofi
    Cons
-Rhea Island just feel weak and I think it could've been done more
-Speed/Rings leveling is way too tedious
-The Combat while being good it could get a bit repetitive.
    Conclusion
Sonic Frontiers is a great game and a fantastic Sonic game, there is a diamong in the rough, but I feel that Sonic team could make it even better, they have the formula the only need to polish it, a more engaging and challenging combat could be a great addttion and make momentum based stages or place could be a great idea in the future, they already found the momentum with the drop dash, but I think they could make it on base sonic, I'm very excited of the new future that Sonic has, and hoping that he will continue going into new Frontiers

Best Sonic game since Sonic Heroes or Unleashed. Sonic's controls are the smoothest they've been in years, and I'm happy he doesn't control like tank anymore. The story is excellent as well. Bosses are the highlight; this is the best Super Sonic we've gotten.

There was a Sonic fanboy calling this garbage "a masterpiece, a peak game, an amazing experience" when it's actually a disasterpiece, a bottom of the barrel game, and a terrible experience.

Sonic's entry into new, for him, gaming paths is overall successful, despite any problems. With a little polish and attention to detail, the next game in the series has the foundations in place to finally look eternal rival Mario in his three-dimensional, bubbly eyes.

As a 3D Sonic a step in the right direction. The open world has a lot to offer but gets lost in redundancy.
