Song of Horror is a chilling horror adventure in the way of classics as Resident Evil or Alone in the Dark that doesn't reinvent anything but pay tribute to the genre roots like few games do.

A noteworthy homage to the survival horror classics, that offers son intelligent and refreshing ideas. It's difficulty curve and the stress the gameplay generates make the game an experience not recommended for the faint of heart.

Song of Horror: Complete Edition is a lot to take in all at once. The slow pacing and puzzle difficulty make it an exercise to get through, making the episodic pacing seem like the better choice. What is special here is the right way to do a paranormal horror game that involves something you can see but not control. A few variations of quick time events used to defend yourself and having to also think on the fly is a new exercise in horror games. The atmosphere is fantastic as dark environments mixed with excellent ambiance goes unrivaled, especially when it comes to indie titles. The Complete Edition is also only $30 at launch making it clear that Song of Horror: Complete Edition is worth a play for any old school horror fan.

Song of Horror’s production values initially turned me off, with poorly animated characters and awful voice acting. Despite those flaws, I had a hard time putting the game down once I was drawn into its world. The quirks even grew on me, the same way I embrace schlocky low-budget horror movies. What I most appreciate about Song of Horrors is that it doesn’t just mimic what came before. It’s clearly a tune inspired by other survival-horror classics, but it has its own unique tempo and melody. And it’s a darkly catchy one, to boot.

Song of Horror definitely exceeded all of my expectations. It hits that “haunted house attraction” level of spookiness just right and, for the most part, the puzzles are a nice mix of exploration and inventive thinking. It’s not without the occasional hiccup, and some of the puzzles could do with a few more hints, but overall? Song of Horror is one of the best horror games I’ve played this year. Best of all, it’s not QUITE done yet. Updates already planned in their roadmap include adjustments to the most egregious puzzles, fleshing out the final chapter a bit more (Another encounter with the Presence and a new character), and a new harder difficulty level. If you’re a fan of older third-person survival horror games, I highly recommend picking this up!

Song of Horror doesn't hide its sources of inspiration, the milestones of the survival horror genre. It finds some elegant ways to pay them homage, sometimes succeeding very well, especially with the creepy atmosphere and music, some other times slipping clumsily (like in the case of some of the puzzle design, way too cryptic).

Song of Horror breaths some fresh air into the Horror genre. Searching for clues and solving puzzles while being stalked by an omnipresent entity that adapts to your actions, has never been more terrifying.

Song of Horror is a good Halloween game. It lacks originality and some game systems would have to be reviewed, but all in all it's not so bad.

Thus far, Song of Horror is a tense, chilling horror outing that deserves to be experienced by any serious horror fan.

Song of Horror is a genuinely atmospheric, creepy horror game, with the major selling point of an enemy that you're never actually sure about. The advanced AI system of the horrors you face, combined with sound, visuals and other game mechanics make for one of the more engrossing and captivating horror titles of recent memory. There are some faults, such as backtracking and a bit of adventure game logic when trying to solve puzzles, but these do nothing to stymie everything Protocol Games are bringing to the table.

While we've only seen one episode, Song Of Horror has all the components of a strong horror adventure game rivaling those that many of us grew up with. Its puzzles won't wear you down with frustration and the horror environments are sure to deliver a scare.

Song of Horror is a good surprise with a creepy atmosphere and a very unpredictable foe that keeps you on your toes. The only worry is about the future chapters yet to be released, and the locked camera that feels quite old.

Despite its overall simplicity, Song of Horror Episode 1 is an excellent and atmospheric horror game with an excellent sound design.

A frightening and unpredictable horror game that will even startle regulars horror fans. You simply can't stop playing Song of Horror until you see it to the very end. You have to anxiously find clues, solve riddles and most importantly avoid The Presence in order to fully unravel the storyline. Whether you are a detective in the making or a jumpscare enthusiast, Song of Horror was made for you. Adrenaline, stress, fear, anxiety... You have come to the right place.

Though a perfectly engrossing horror game (and a timely reminder that an over-the-shoulder view isn't the only way of looking at an awful place) at times it can feel like a waste of promising concepts. [Issue#347, p.98]

Song of Horror has some great ideas and is genuinely scary at times, but random deaths and awkward controls sometimes threaten to spoil the experience.

An old-school horror adventure, stressful, that shines from a set of 4 characters, from a cool graphic design and from a well handled level design. Yet, puzzles are a but strangely built, and the narrative ends too abruptly.

An unremarkable story is outshined by engaging, if difficult, puzzles, and a persistently creepy atmosphere.

Song of Horror is a game with great ideas, but not all of them are well executed. It is, however, a survival horror with a great classic vibe, so if you are a long-time fan of the genre, it can be a good option.

Song of Horror is a cool and scary game defined by very old-school elements and a lot of untapped potential. If you can swallow crude animations and the need to repeat many of the stages, you will be fine. If not, even the pretty surroundings and an interesting story may not be enough. Still, it could be much worse.

While the puzzles make up a big part of the game, it is the terrifying side of Song of Horror that makes it stand out. Playing just before bed wasn’t my greatest idea, and everyday things like putting the bins out at night aren’t as straightforward as they were last week. Still, I always came back for more, and I’ll continue to do so.

Song of Horror's scariest aspect is its permadeath feature - not because it's spooky, but because slogging through levels is an absolute chore. Worse yet, Song of Horror punishes the player for exploring its admittedly beautiful environment. Neat technical features and meticulously crafted lore do somewhat make up for its faults. But ultimately, none but the most hardcore horror fans will give this game the time of day (or night).
