Probably the best MOBA I have ever played. The community isn't too bad for being a MOBA and you can buy all the characters for $30.

Also best of all... Voice commands. One of the best ways of communicating in a moba I have ever seen.

Smite is an exhilarating MOBA that brings gods and mythological figures to life. With its unique third-person perspective, fast-paced battles, and a diverse roster of deities, it offers a fresh and immersive take on the genre. The strategic gameplay and constant updates make Smite a must-play for fans of competitive multiplayer games.

"I'll never play a MOBA", that's what I said a year ago. Now I am playing SMITE weekly, close to daily. The third-person is such a huge difference and the "even basic attacks are a skillshot" thing makes combat so much more interesting to me. It's really fast-paced, the character selection is awesome, the community is fantastic, the developer takes a lot of feedback.. I'm having a fantastic time.

This MOBA deserves your attention. LoL and Dota are not the industry standard of MOBA's...Smite proves that. It's a genius mash up of a 3rd person action game with the mechanics of a traditional MOBA. In my humble opinion, this is the BEST F2P title out there on any platform. The funny thing is, I am not even a fan MOBA's and yet I have spent over 400 hours in Smite.

Ok, sure you have lanes, towers, minions (creeps), and lots of characters to choose from but the big difference here is that you actually have to aim your shots/skills manually using WSAD and the mouse. This little mechanic adds an enormous amount of depth to the combat and makes you much more involved in every second of the game.

The character selection is great! You play as many different gods from mythology like Hercules, Hades, Anubis, Neith, Cupid, and Thor just to name a few. Each god is very well crafted and feels very unique. Every time I purchased or earned a new god, I found myself dumping endless hours into learning the skills and play style of that god. It feels like a new game every time you decide to master a new god. Along with many characters to choose from, there are a handful of solid game modes and maps to choose from as well. Don’t feel like playing the traditional 3 lane map? Well you can choose from one lane maps, arena team deathmatch, control point maps and my personal favorite, the Assault mode (one lane, no jungle and random gods). Another positive worth noting is the amount of care and attention the staff at Hi-Rez has put into this game. It seems like every month or so they release a new god and/or patches and cosmetic changes. If you log out of Smite for weeks on end, expect lots of new additions to the game when you come back.

MOBA’s are known to be highly competitive which usually means you will find a highly competitive smack talking community. The good news is Hi-Rez reacts quickly enough to player complaints and has no problem issuing bans. But there in lies the problem… I have been wrongfully issued a three day ban before with no warning that my account was under review. They just simply banned me and told me to deal with it. After a few emails back and forth, I found out it was because I had too many disconnects mid game. That was only due to my shoddy ISP at the time. Solution? Maybe Hi-Rez could send out emails or in-game messages warning players that their account is under review.

This next issue I have is a strange one that seems to be a big grey area with not only Smite but most Early Access games in general. I purchased several gods with real money in the past. Sometimes Hi-Rez will make major changes to gods that I have purchased including re-skins and skill changes. Well that sounds fine and all but the reason I bought this god was because I liked it for what it was at that time. Some of these changes completely transform the god into something I no longer like to use. This has happened several times in the Beta which I guess is understandable (being a Beta) but it has now happened outside of the Beta which seems to be more of an issue. I just hope that’s not going to be a common thing to do.

Those minor gripes aside, I can’t say enough good things about Smite. With so many low quality fremium games out there, Smite’s content and support make this a diamond in the rough.

That being said, if you're not all that familiar with MOBAs there is a learning curve to it, study up on all abbreviations and terms before jumping in. The lore behind each god is also extremely interesting to read, and each god looks and feels awesome while staying true to the rich lore behind them. People generally said that DotA 2 and/or League of Legends are better, and thought about this as I started the game up. After playing over forty eight hours of the game, I can clarify that these statements are false. SMITE is by far the best MOBA that I have ever played. It takes the good aspects of all MOBAs and puts them into a more action-packed, friendly, and generally much more interesting game. It features the classic tri-lane gamemode while also adding several others to break up the monotony of one singular map. This was a problem that DotA 2 had, and SMITE has surpassed it in that respect.
It also features a gigantic character roster of over 90 gods to play, each one purchasable either with an in-game currency or with real-world money. Each god is very unique, has their own way of hacking, slashing, and hitting B to warp back to base.
Its graphics are very nice also, they're just as high-fidelity as DotA but are more realistic than both League and DotA, and so personal preference decides which you prefer. This game's community is far better than DotA 2's, and makes League's look like the final circle of hell. People are always happy to help players out, work together, listen to voice commands and so on.
This game's biggest negative however is that it's held down by a ton of the classic MOBA rules that have League of Legends twitching on the floor covered in bees. It keeps the whole "purchasing gods" aspect, albeit bypassable by the Ultimate-God-Pack, but it also has unfair voting mechanics, unchangeable characters once locked in, and the last hitting rule. But if those are not bothersome to you, SMITE is an absolutely wonderful game with plenty of potential to keep growing and growing.

My friend (who also does reviews, his name is 'Memburg') was telling me about a game he recently started playing SMITE, I had seen a bit of SMITE on YouTube and I thought it looked okay, so I downloaded it and begun playing it with him. In my first game I got two kills, which is not much to most, but my MOBA background consists of one kill every match (that I stole), so to me it was a big deal. I began to love this game. I have no idea how long I have spent playing, but it would be nearing 100 hours by now. I started on Cupid when he was on the free God rotation, moved onto Tyr (who I no longer play), Mercury, Hun Batz, fell in love with Vulcan, and I'm really enjoying Scylla right now.

My long and ramble-y story basically comes down to this: If you are a fan of MOBAs, play it. If not, you very well may enjoy it, it's in a much nicer view so it's more welcoming to people new to the genre. The reason I gave it a 9 is because 1) MOBA communities are some really not nice people, so I play with friends (although you do meet some nice people now and then), and 2) every now and then, I get annoyed at features, but it's not a consistent problem; just sometimes annoys me in the middle of a game.

This new perspective alone makes the game feel much more action-packed and if you don't think you like MOBAs, you need to play SMITE just for this new feel.

If for whatever reason you didn't know, SMITE uses different kinds of gods as playable characters. These gods vary from Roman gods to Mayan gods to Chinese gods with everything in between. Many of them are familiar such as Poseidon, Aphrodite, and Cupid but you'll find yourself knowing about many more like Ah Muzen Cab, Chaac, and Scylla. Though it is neat to see familiar faces in the game, it's even cooler seeing what attacks they use. Every god you can play as feels very different prompting you to want to buy them all. And this can be a problem with SMITE. There are so many gods to play as and you will want to try all of them but it is quite hard to earn money in the game. However, you can pay to get Gems which let you buy more stuff. It's not necessarily pay-to-win, but you will see yourself spending money on the game. Large amounts of money.

Going back to the abilities, every god has a unique set of attacks that do unique things. Again, this makes it very interesting to see what new things that new gods introduce such as being able to switch weapons instantly which no other god can do. It creates a very refreshing and otherwise great feel for the game. Because of this, SMITE will be the reason you don't get homework done and why you go to bed at 2AM, the game is extremely addicting. Which is great because it's so action-packed and rewarding. Every kill you get feels huge and when you're on a long killstreak or winstreak, you will keep playing so you can only improve upon yourself and once you do, you'll be one happy camper.

This again, leads to another problem is that you can almost always improve upon yourself. It is good and bad really, as you will always be striving to become better. However, you won't really feel like you're "complete". With SMITE being a MOBA and getting constantly updated, it isn't a surprise that this happens at all but there will be times when you just feel like you can be better and you keep trying. Again, you may succeed which is a great feeling but you may also fail which is frustrating as SMITE games do last a while and it isn't rare to get a crappy team.

With all the fresh and unique things SMITE does, it easily earns a 9/10. Just get ready to lose some cash and experience a bit of rage. If you want to know if SMITE is worth your time, the answer is an absolute yes. In fact, it could be worth TOO much time because it will eat up all time you once had in your life.

So it can only get better and I consider it to be the most fun out of all of them. There are many global ults in the game, in where you can fly in the sky and attack enemies from below. The community is small, so its not as bad as other mobas, but as it gets bigger expect it to get worse. That being said, I rarely encounter them as of right now, but it just goes with the territory of being a moba. If you want to try something new and fun, I would suggest smite as its really an awesome game. Dont get discouraged at first, the skill cap is a little high for beginners but once you get the basics down the game will be a lot of fun. Smite is a great game, that for me, raises the bar for the MOBA genre. Personally, the combat and perspective just feels so right. Its fluid, allows for insanely skillful plays, and responsive. Every time I die, I can tell why I died and the balancing seems fair. When you're having a good game, you really feel like a badass versus a traditional moba, due to the enhanced action combat. I think the movements do seem SLIGHTLY floaty, and would love to see a more powerful physics engine if they were ever to make a sequel. Overall it feels very kickass to play though and when you're having a great game you feel like a GOD.

There are several competitive game modes offered. My favorite alternate game mode is the Arena, where Hi-Rez absolutely nailed the gladiator coliseum experience. The roaring crowds after plays are made....the aesthetic....the straight up 5v5 brawling from the beginning of the game....It's all there.

Also the Ultimate God Pack is such a great value for your dollar. I recommend purchasing it if the game grabs you.

Please give smite a try, especially if you're looking for something "new".

Character models are mostly high quality with a small exception for the very older ones, but the devs are slowly reworking the models.

Having played many a MOBA, Smite is more than a step in the right direction. I love the third person view over the top down as most MOBA's do. The only complaint is that you do not get master in co-op. You get 3 mastery in normal (pvp) but I think you should get at least 1 mastery in co-op. Do not force people to pvp or you lose players.

This game is pretty good. I didn't like Dota or LoL, but the 3rd person perspective makes this game really fun. I feel like I'm actually playing the game, instead just commanding a champion.

The Gods in this game are great, they have 7 different pantheons to choose from. 5 different classes that each feel really different. Although the game does have way more mages than any other class.

There are 5 game modes to choose from, and for each time you win you get extra favor to purchase more gods and skins.

And speaking gods, there are over 50 to play as right now, and more and more keep being added. You'll definitely find one that you like, my favorite is Sun Wukong. Each god has a great design and multiple skins to make them look even better.

This game is pretty good, but there are some flaws. The matchmaking isn't the greatest, as sometimes you'll face someone with a master 10 Diamond Ares, and you're a master 1 Ymir. And the wait times for some of the match's are a little long.

    Overall 9/10.

Mechanically, this game is sound. I'm not a MOBA fan, but I loved the action SMITE brings to the table. It's so funny how a different perspective can lead to such a different result, but it's true here. If this game were it's own, and not just a MOBA, but more like UT, it'd still be kick ass.

The Gods are really cool. Though they have made some Gods look more LoL-like (Kali, He-Bo, New Ao), overall, they have done a great job to actually acknowledge the pantheons they come from. My favorite is Neith, followed by Bastet, then Bacchus. Though I may only play certain Gods, I love all of them. There characters stick out, their VP's are top-notch, and the costumes that keep coming only further the personalities of the Gods (and, in turn, the players).

I may return to it at some point. I've played for a loooonnnngggg time and have seen SMITE undergo many many changes. Every step Hi-Rez has made has been the right step towards making an engaging MOBA worthy of e-sports fame (and I'm being generous here, as I find e-sports to be "What, you can't catch a football?")

All in all, this is a solid game. If you have a 2-4 friends that like this type of stuff, I'd say bring the malong if you haven't already. SMITE is doing it's best to stand out among the many, monotonous MOBA's out there.

The good thing about SMITE in my opinion, is that it feels more like an action game than a pure MOBA, and in my opinion, that's a great thing because I was really getting tired of the constant samey MOBA experiences. Controlling your hero feels more like you are actually in control, not just giving commands to a hero. Every auto-attack and skill use feels good, because you are in control.

The game features *now* great graphics, fluid movement, good interface and a huge variety of items and active skills to customize your hero. The game barely had any of those things 2-3 years ago, but Hi-Rez put their head to it and made the game so much more than what it was. It's really great.

The VGS (voice guided system) is pure gold. Probably one of the best features that I have seen in any MOBA, ever. It allows for quick communication with your team without hindering the gameplay at all. All the commands are appropriately labelled and you can learn the whole system quickly. This increases the whole cooperation with your team, without voice chat in the game. You can even customize the V commands with a voice pack of your choice by your favourite gods.

Great thing about this game, is that it's based on mythology, and all the gods you know and love are back in and fighting with each other.

Before, the UI, matchmaking and graphics were my main gripes with this game, but Hi-Rez is making constant HUGE updates with revamped graphics, characters , maps, game modes , skins, etc.

My main two gripes with this game are kind of minor, but they are there: HORRIBLE voice acting except for few characters like Tyr, and silly auto attack animations which seem be needlessly spectacular (like, does my character really need to do a 720 degrees backflip every other auto attack? Hi-Rez is getting better, but some AAA are still silly).

SMITE also has a great business model, a step up from LoL. You can not only buy characters with in-game currency and real currency, but you can also rent gods and pay a lifetime fee of £20 and get every god + every future god in the game.

Overall, SMITE is a great f2p package and everybody who loves MOBA games AND action games should check it out, it's really fun.

Drawback one: is that the game isn't that well optimized, but they have been doing their best to optimize their lower end settings for lower end pc's, personally doesn't effect me, but then again no matter what I set my settings too I get the same frame rate.

Drawback two: is that the servers are kind of messy for the time being, the US servers are based out of Atlanta and I live on the west coast, they do have a few servers out here, but it is very rare to get them so ping can be a huge issue with the game, and even beyond this I have friends who live near Atlanta who still have some crazy lag and ping issues.

I played a lot of LoL and some DOTA 2, and this game is very, very similar in terms of mechanics and gameplay. The view and lack of auto attack (every auto attack is actually a skill shot) is enough to totally set this game apart though.

It feels slower than LoL and easier to pick up and play as a noob. The gold difference between someone that's dominating and someone that's getting owned is much smaller than in LoL. It's therefore much harder to snowball, and any advantage gained in early lane is quickly caught up.
One of the hardest things to get used to is running from a battle with low health, having to turn your back on the action. With LoL obviously you can see the action even when running away. In Smite you can only see what's in front. You may turn around and run because of low health, only to have a look back and find that your team has won the battle after all.
I play this game at 2560 x 1600 max settings and it looks wonderful and it's perfectly smooth on Xfire 290x cards.
There is no chat to all in this game, only your own team. Somehow between this and the fact that you're using WASD to move, the chat in game is minimal and much less agro than LoL.
    Pros
    - Good tutorials and good learning curve
    - Looks great and is very smooth with pretty much 0 lag
    - Much much MUCH less flaming / agro / abuse than LoL and far fewer trolls
    - Less snowballing and domination from an early game advantage

    Cons
    - Doesn't quite feel as addictive as LoL

Compered to other mobas such as LoL and Dota2, this game really stands out with its TPS + action style gameplay.

The only thing bothers me the most is it's very slow exp rate. I mean the currency drop for purchasing new gods is just too low.

If your thinking a new form of moba. Well you just landed here with Smite for 2014. No other moba has the action packed into a flashy style like a shooter, for a third person view. Gods of choices is where it draws the line. Better yet, this game is picking up new players Fast!! It's about time someone does it right.

This a nice game for a MOBA and I have not been able to really get into those types of games. I just sort of lost interest after awhile because the teaching mechanic doesn't really work well. If a PUG is really green they get stomped without knowing why and other issues that games have that are in this genre. I think Smite does a good job to try and curb these as much as possible. Try it out!

Having almost 2000 hours of time played in Dota 2, I decided to finally give this game a try, since some of my friends have played it off and on for the last couple of years. I also really like that they have distinguished themselves from other Mobas (at least Dota), not only in the 3rd-person-perspective, but in terms of how the matches play out. I feel that there is a higher possibility of a comeback, and the matches end a lot quicker, which is a welcome change of pace, since some Dota-games can really drag on. The skill-cap is high, but the game is more forgiving than other similar games, at least in my experience. So far, the community also seem a bit better than Dota 2. The biggest complaint I have, is that most (sadly) of the skins for the heroes are just awful. Some of them just don't look good, which is fine, I can just stay away from them, but some of the skins are just childish and ridiculous, which really bugs me out. Expand

Smite is one of the most original, satisfying games I've ever played. Developer Hi-Rez did a great job of making the heroes and giving them an authentic feel. With multiple game modes and a lot of characters to choose from, this is a fresh new take on the world of MOBA's.

The game is amazing fun, though it has it's issues with the ban system and the deserter system. As well as unoriginal skills.

So pretty much it's one of the most enjoyable games ever, and pretty much everyone could like it, but if you have a bad internet or are just plain unlucky, you won't be able to play much.

But never did I have this much fun on a MOBA before...

Probably the most important thing of a MOBA, besides good looking/catchy gods.
Movement and combat feel natural, as does skill placement.
Sometimes it can be very hard to land a certain skill or spell, but when you do... It feels just AWESOME!

I also quite like the fact that you move slower when go sideways or backward, this adds more depth to the game, because you actually have to think how you move your character!

If we talk about items, they are well balanced and versatile, yet it's simple to understand what they do.
The only thing that's nagging me is: you CAN't sell 'active' items, which instantly makes no-one use them before late game.

    What about the game modes?
Some are really cool, others suck. I think it's good that they have these different game modes, eventually it's your choice what you like to play!

    Graphics
Lets be honest: most gods look really, really cool! As do there skills/spells and attack animations.
But of course there are some gods that look really lame.

Map wise they made it come to life, it looks like a battleground worthy of the gods.
But again, some maps are cool others are not. It depends on your preference.

    Conclusion
Overall this game is fun to play and has an OK community, especially when considering this game is a MOBA. It has a nice skill cap with many different gods, some easy, others hard to master.
The different game modes are fun to play, I personally like to switch them up once in a while.

Gods are pretty balanced, but can easily get out of control when running away with kills early on.
They look good, feel good as do their skills/spells.

The overall control over your god feels a lot better than in a standard MOBA!

    This game deserves a 8/10.

If you are good, you have no life and you are a hacker.... but if you play a bad game you suck you need to delete your account and go kill yourself. No matter how much you get harassed, and even if you report someone, it still stays the same. The person never gets a penalty in any way, and they continue to harass you even if you play a good game with them. It goes well beyond the game as well, even after the game has ended they private message you to continue being crappy. This game would be perfect if we could actually block someone so that I can never read their raging messages. I've tried blocking them though it still pairs them in a game with me, and I can still read messages in game. The only thing it solves is private messages. This game actually has made me delete it so many times just because of people being such ass faces about every little thing. All in all I like how this game plays, but if you can find a way to weed out the little **** faces that ruin the whole experience it would be perfect. I've had less ****ing from players on call of duty and I thought that game was bad. On this game we have guys with no life that just sit here and play 24/7 to complain to other people. Then they always seem to get stuck on MY team. Even if we are winning and he/she is the only one on the team dying at all they still freak out and tell the whole team they suck etc. This game should come with free anger management for those that obviously well beyond need it and a zanax so we can put up with their crap. If you can get past all the B.S from the community online, then by all means play this game. It is quite good, provided you grow up before you download it because all the little children playing this game are making it unpleasant for us that actually enjoy games for FUN. It's not the end of the world if you lost, and if it is then kindly ask your mother to wipe your butt and give you a new diaper before you log back in. There are no auto attacks and all skill (unless they are buffs) need to be aimed which means you have to play much closer attention to what you are doing. Smite uses Gods form different mythologies as there "Hero's" and it has meant that I have learnt more about ancient cultures and their beliefs. It has a few game modes which are all unique. It has the normal MOBA game mode with the 3 lanes and the jungles but it also has an arena where you just need to kill the enemy and the Match of the day changes things within each game mode and it adds variety to what the game has to offer. Most of the community is good but there are some very toxic players. There are balancing issues and some items or gods are much more overpowered than others. You can customize your account with new icons, music themes, card borders, stands and god skins but there is so much that it can fell overwhelming and it can take awhile to gather gems (which is what you use to buy most of the stuff). Favor is the currency you get for playing the game but the stuff you can buy with it is limited. It also has some connection problems but if you have decent WiFi then you should be OK.

That being said, the game still has major problems that it has had for a long time. Smite is known for its terrible matchmaking which basically makes it unable to compete along side other major MOBAs like LoL or Dota 2. Hi-Rez (game developers) keep releasing new gods and content that keep breaking the game instead of trying to balance what they already have. This are the 2 main problems with Smite which IMO makes it not suitable for a 9 or 10 rating, though, the matchmaking system is totally being remade and Hi-Rez is slowly winning back the community's trust, we'll see how the game improves but as of right now, 8/10 for me. In the end of 2018 we have clearly saw a change in designers and the team that is creating the content for the game. First the arenas and the playgrounds that they implemented are very weird and ugly.
Maybe the biggest problem (at the current time in January 2019.) is their launcher Everything worked fine for years and then in late 2018. Hi-Rez created a new launcher that makes you update the game very time you start the game. For users with fast connection, it will take up to 5 or 10 minutes to update every time in order to play. For other, it will take a lot longer.
If you plan to play this game, I highly recommend it. But maybe it would be better to play it via Steam as you won't have any problems with updates. Only hope stays that the Smite team and Hi-Rez will leave the path that leads to poor graphics and really weird arena's and playgrounds and continue with the path that lead the game to be one of the best MOB games available.

I prefer this game to other MOBA because this one is 3rd person, which makes it more immersive. Arena is fast paced but I think Conquest should be 10vs10 or 7vs7. Also when one person is AFK, the game quickly becomes unfair. For a free game, it's quite good but well I think that if you really want to enjoy it, you will want to buy it, 30$ seems fair. This being said, unlocking one god seems to take forever, I've about 3500 flavors after at least playing at least 8 hours while a god is 5000. I guess that the best to really enjoy this game would be to play in a real team (clan). I can see how powerful it can be to make smart use of powers (one freeze the opponent while the other use a massive slow attack) and to be many to attack a single opponent. I would probably really enjoy playing competitive and learning all Gods skills. This being said, without having a clan to play with and being limited to only a few Gods (free to play), the game becomes quickly repetitive and boring. I prefer to play a game like battlefield where you can revive other players, heal yourself and where the attacks (guns) are more clearly defined. Indeed, in SMITE, it's often hard to understand how you got killed because there are some many Gods/attacks. Expand

There is nothing more unskilled than a rogue, in any game, let alone a MOBA, which is basically defined by skill-based-play. Remove the rogues and fix the unbalanced gods and Smite is solid gold. Until then...Meh, it's okay I guess.

There is also absolutely no ranking system for matchmaking, I can't say how many times I've been on a team of new players vs. a team of mostly pro-ranked, or beta testers. Makes for incredibly unfair matches. The game has a player level system, which would be an easy base to use for such a matchmaking system, but it apparently disregards it. The Devs are probably to busy cashing their checks from all the Tournaments.

    TL;DR:
Great game, balance issues, rogues suck and people that play them suck, needs matchmaking balancing.

I absolutely love Smite. It is the only MOBA that has been able to keep my interest for an extended period of time, been playing for over a year. Even with my love of the game, there are still quite a few flaws that are present in the game. So let's get started.

Overall, it is a very fun game to play. Choose from any of the current 51 deities -- with more on the way -- and play in one of multiple game modes: Conquest, Arena, Assault, 1v1, 3v3, Conquest and Arena League, and the match of the day which is random restrictions on classic modes for fun.

The gameplay. The use of WASD and the 3rd person camera do make it a more engaging experience compared to an isometric MOBA. There is no way to influence the game with outside purchases, a la LoL runes. The active items in the game must be bought in game, which promotes countering. Overall the actual combat is very solid, but it is not what the advertisements portray. The game does advertise that it has only skillshots, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. I'm not saying there are no skillshots, but things like AoE circles that require little more than just getting close to the enemy are fairly common. Regardless, it is still a very engaging combat system and I find it very fun.

Next, aesthetics. The game has a more lighthearted simple feel to it. I don't want to say it's cartoonish, but it is definitely a less serious art style than say LoL or DotA. Each deity has their own uniqueness about their models. The new item styles are all presented in a similar art style. I'm not very good with describing the art of the game, but it all fits together nicely, with updates to bring some more dated things up to par with the rest of the game.

Now for UI. Smite's UI has not been done very well. Every single window takes up the entire screen, whether its the skill, stats, death recap, or store window, The shop has come a long way to being more accessible, but it still has longer to go. The tabs on the home screen are unlabeled and hard to tell what they do. There's no collective shop for all the skins and voicepacks, and the store button actually directs you out of the game. The twitch integration for the game is a running joke of the community. The hud for in matches, however, is very minimal, has easily understood information, and has the nice addition of telling you if your teammates ultimate's are off cooldown.

And now for the parts of smite that need a lot of work, optimization and balancing.

In regards to optimization, after every patch, there are people complaining about frame rate decreases. Sometimes the drops are minimal, sometimes they are drastic. I've personally never been affected to badly, but the fps drops are hardware indiscriminate. It doesn't matter how powerful your computer is, there is always a chance there will be frame drops, which could be crippling. Also, there is very noticeable lag in many menu's, most notably the store and god select screen for a match. Quickly scrolling in either creates tearing and stuttering, both of which are very distracting and annoying. There's a lot of room for improvement in this regard, and while a very small amount of patches have mentioned optimization, I've yet to see someone say their frames have actually increased.

Balancing is done horribly by Hi-Rez. Many deities are blatantly overpowered or broken, with others just completely useless. Zeus has been widely considered the most overpowered thing in the game for months now, and he has remained completely untouched. Also, a lot of nerf's to deities do not actually address the problem the deity has, and some nerf's are just completely random with no explanation. Which brings me to my next point, developer transparency.

Very rarely is a nerf/buff been explained beyond "[enter deity name] performed higher/lower than expected." One thing that many people have taken for granted from other companies, a collective forum, was actually only just recently reinstated from Hi-Rez. After completely failing at moderating the forums the first time around, they just completely shut the forums down and stated that the smite subreddit was the new official discussion board for smite. They brought the forums back, and this won't affect my rating, but it is something people should know coming into the game.

Fairly sure I covered all the bases. Even if I didn't, I expect this to be more informative than the countless 10's that only praise the game, despite it's obvious problems. I still wholeheartedly recommend smite, I just don't want people to join with their hopes to high. Hopefully Hi-Rez works on these problems so I could give it a higher rating; however, right now, even with all my love for the game, I give it a 6.5/10, I rounded up for the MC score.

You end up with people, who have level 10 mastery in God, who are not very good with their characters. You end up with people being rewarded for going AKF and sitting in base, not contributing. You end up having to carry people with a 1:13 and 3:15 kill-death ratio ( real stats from a game ) while also having to write a thesis in the chat channel about the fact that your 0:6 k/d with Thor, during the late game ( in a different game ) doesn't matter, since you have single-handedly done 7,300 structure damage. Maybe it's because the viewpoint is third person and the mini-map is off to the side, whereas in DOTA 2, people are very aware of the significance of losing or gaining a tower but players in Smite seem utterly clueless.

The player base and matchmaking is horrendous. The game is free-to-play ( with all the pluses and minuses that F2P brings ). The game is plagued by all of the problems of DOTA 2 ( AFK-Leaver-Noob-Retards ) plus the fact that people have never played a MOBA before and don't seem to understand the significance of tower loss or gain or even game-flow ( which is covered in Youtube tutorials and is viewable during the 5Gb download ). If you are a skilled player, be prepared to carry the team in almost every game.

The idea behind leagues is that if you get to level 30, you can play in competitive leagues. I have read that only 1.6% of the player base plays in leagues at any one time, which means 20 minute wait times for the Bronze league and those leagues are still not free of someone leaving the game, resulting in a re-queue time.

I could only stomach grinding to level 25. The match making was an epic exercise in frustration ( perhaps no different from other games which fail to have adequate match making, since match making is often an after-thought, if it is even thought about at all ). The only way around the matchmaking is to add friends and go in as pre-made ( Leagues do not support pre-mades ). Every page on the Official Smite forum talks about the broken match making ( an unsolved, 2 year problem ).

The game plays well enough and is very addictive. I have only noticed a couple of frame rate skipping episodes on my NVIDIA GTX 780 but I'm sure that those kinks will work themselves out in time. The game doesn't have the hardcore modes of DOTA 2 ( "Pure random" God pick or "pick 3" ).

Final Score: 7/10 ( 2 points deducted for the poor match making and 1 point for the the inability to appeal a false report of "intentional feeding" / crap player base ).

After 24 days of not playing, I went back and got to max level ( level 30), with 12 different God masteries, in an attempt to get into ranked games. I recently noticed this Reddit post, which everyone should read: "Smite-Streamer abuses Power to contact HiRez and instantly ban players".

Playground of the Gods is the motto and it's definitely fun. Is it a LoL copy? Not really. It follows the normal MOBA style but takes it into the next evolution of the genre. Instead of overhead it moves into a 3rd person view and plays at a much faster pace. You have your typical modes of Conquest (5v5, 3 lanes with jungle attacking opposing Titan), Assault (5v5, random god, single lane no jungle attacking opposing Titan), Arena (5v5, TDM set in a gladiator arena with jungle mobs on outskirts), MOTD (5v5, random game changes daily and will cover all modes including domination mode not available anywhere else. Examples - All the same god, Guy Gods vs Girl Gods, Norse gods vs Egyptian, etc.), Joust (3v3, single lane with jungle attacking opposing Titan), There is also private lobbies for groups of 5v5 to play in. They have practice, normal and league options for the different modes with the exception of the private lobby being only available under normal.

The game is F2P but does have in game purchases yet none that make the game P2W. They offer you 5 starting gods and 5 random gods that rotate weekly so if you don't have the money you'll still get a chance to enjoy the variety of gods on offer, currently 51. Most things can be purchased with "Favor" which you earn through battle but some costumes and all the individual character voices are gems (cash) only. The best option they offer is a God Pack that gives you access to all current and future gods for a one time fee.

Now for the final cut.. While the game is fun and I do play it almost daily it's not without it's glitches. For me personally this game was in beta for two years and to still be having problems I don't understand; which is why I scored it the way I did. Server pings are random. I can play a match at 70 and have another at 150+. Since release HiRez has fixed some issues with the ping where before I had matches that'd start great then my ping would shoot up to 600 even 900. I also had matches where both teams could not play because you'd be walking out your spawn area 5 times then suddenly pop halfway across the map yet we could chat just fine. Rare graphic glitches and abilities that on the rare occasion seemingly not do anything even though it executed properly from your POV. They offer a broken Twitch integrated client that would allow you to unlock a skin for one god but for a reason only known to the gods have not bothered to fix it so it's impossible to unlock the skin. Now even with these and other minor things the game is still fun. The community does have it's few elitist ass hats who whine about your build or not following meta but they do offer the option to mute, report and block players so if you happen upon them remember that and don't get caught up in their trolling ways mid game.

There's a lot to say about MOBAs in general, both in good and bad terms. However, after playing SMITE for a few months, I can say that it's one of the best ( in my case ). However, like all games it has it's downsides, mainly directed to the lack of items and the overall unbalanced feel the game has. Many of the gods can start snowballing at very low levels while others (Mainly stealth related ones) get a free pass to attack or escape due to the lack of vision granting items in the game, sure there are wards and such, but the fact that there isn't one to reveal or detect and alert you of invisible enemies can really cause people to get pissed off ( I'm talking about you Loki.)
Anyway, I give it a 7/10. It gives people a fresh and more strategic look at MOBAs while keeping the basic elements that LoL and DOTA players are accustomed too.

The 3rd person view makes using a gamepad possible, which really makes the game unique. It can't really be compared to other "mobas", which is both good and bad. The good part is that the games stay pretty fast paced for their entirety. The bad part is its fairly simple, with not much to learn aside from specific spells and items.
The game is really original in its concept, but the

Even if you don't enjoy league/dota/hots/strife/dawngate/any rts, you might enjoy smite.

Third god perspective freshens up the MOBA genre but its potential was not fully utilized (e.g. you can jump, but there’s nowhere to jump to). Smite makes up for that with varied game modes and accessibility to inexperienced or casual players. [06/2014, p.58]

The product of Hi Rez Studios is well made, and offers different feelings from those of its competitors, thanks to the different camera angle and a fast paced gameplay.
