This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It would seem Rhianna Pratchett was fired, BUT Jill Murray intercepted Pratchett's baton, I don't even know where the script is worse in the previous two games or in the Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

    - The conscious deterioration of Lara's face compared to the Rise of the Tomb Raider
    - Lack of plot. Instead of it nonsense
    - Small locations, while the game lagging
    - Absolutely uninteresting characters
    - Secondary quests - one of the worst in the gaming industry
    - The lack of any motivation for the characters to do what they do, especially Lara, one side she helps the "naked ass" tribe, on the other hand she kills everyone on her way
    - ORCS in Latin America - what kind of drugs does Jill Murray use ?
    - ORCS do not react to shots at close range by a shotgun, you need to shoot at least twice or thrice
    - Initial data: on the one hand, the orcs with spears and arrows, on the other hand, well-armed militants in body armor and helmets, with the support of an armored personnel carrier, and several combat helicopters. What is the result? Victory of Orcs.
    - Foxes either coyotes the size of an elephant, in which you need to put a half of the charger of the machine gun to pacify their.
    - Unnecessary hunting
    - Tombs have become more than in the previous two games, but they are easy and not interesting
    - The game is full of bugs, for example, in the tomb, where you need to close the "curtains" the wind continues to blow even with the curtains closed, or the quest "echo of the past" cannot be passed, because the Abby does not appear in the house of the granny, and the granny herself mumbles some nonsense standing at the entrance of the house.
    - Jonah underwent plastic surgery, why is he needed in the game ? Better would have added girlfriend for Lara xD
    - Lara is Rambo, or Predator is not very clear.

In short, this is the worst game of relaunch trilogy.

I am shocked by the positive reviews this game is getting. It's pretty, but beyond that, it's not a good game. The story is predictable, the gameplay is dumbed down to pointlessness. It's everything I hate about the consolification of games. Not a good game. Reviews are way off.

The worst in the series, the story is so bad and uninspiring. The controls is not responsive sometimes when trying to climb. The graphics are good for the most time , but sometimes it can be really ugly.

I loved the other two games and played them a lot, this game I will not!

Great atmosphpere and aestethics. This could have been a very good game. Howerver: there are two catches:
    1. The new Lara Croft is just horrible. Whenever she says something in her whiney depressed voice i only wish her to shut up. She is the type of girl every sane person would walk away from in RL. Overdramatic, and always spoiling the good moment by commenting the obvious. And she

Overdramatic, and always spoiling the good moment by commenting the obvious. And she looks boring too.

    2. Gameplay: Controls would be fine, if gameplay was not interrupted by tons of cutscenes or forced to slow down for dramatic effects or to emphasize Laras whine over radio. Once you get through the main game you can start the more interesting side quests and challenges.

My advice for original Tomb Raider fans: get through the main story in a rush, then change Laras appearance to an old version and switch off her annoying voice. Now the game becomes actually very nice and there are still plenty of things to discover in side missions.

I can't comment on the main storyline as i either skipped the damn cutscenes (if possible) or cut the sound and walked away until the cutscene was over (if skipping was impossible).

As a Tomb Raider fan since the very beginning, i feel sorry for how Lara Crofts character has been sabotaged. I mean HELLO? this is a computer game! There really is no need to have your depressed girl next door in the main role just for political correctness.

Finally got around to playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider just recently as I wanted to wait until I got my new computer to play the game. So here are my thoughts:

Graphics: A massive mixed bag, the in game cut scenes look fantastic as well as the lighting and overall the game looks pretty solid, however sometimes the game is just downright ugly with washed out colours, characters looking clay-like and the game often looking pixelated especially background scenery.

Gameplay: Very similar to Rise of the Tomb Raider, except Rise of the Tomb Raider took what was good about its predecessor and improved upon it. Shadow does the opposite of this with few additions to the Rise gameplay and the game just feels so much clunkier than Rise as well as being frustrating at times with quick time events and bad level design with the game feeling incredibly linear. The game also punishes you for going stealth with the bow being practically useless since most enemies take multiple hits to kill regardless of headshots, better off going guns blazing like Uncharted.

Story: It sucks, the devs clearly didn't care about the story so why should I? Cookie cutter two dimensional characters that are picked up and dropped like a rock, peoples motivations aren't explained and Lara is the only character that is likeable (just barely)

Audio: The music is pretty decent, however the audio will cut out at times and the lip syncing will also go out of sync from time to time.

Overall: To sum up, the game is noticeably worse than its predecessors. The game is too linear and holds your hand tightly with incredibly uninspired level design. It looks pretty good visually (for the most), the gameplay is fine (even though its forgettable) and the story, well you won't remember it after a day. Sadly the game is just mediocre, maybe pick it up in a couple of years during a Steam sale for $5? Almost forgot to mention, the game has quite a few bugs including visual bugs, audio bugs and gameplay bugs that require you to reload from the last checkpoint. Have fun :)

Edit: Also realised I missed an entire scene (the cool scene where she rises from the water with flames etc) as the game just skipped it, the scene just didn't happen it cut past it, just another bug worth pointing out.

Crazy to think Lara Croft was once known as a badass dual-pistol-wielding, T-Rex fighting, motorcycle riding chick that was fearless, sexy, and all about raiding tombs.... in the late 90s. Fast forward to 2018, Lara Croft has now become one of the most boring characters in existence and her adventures consist of the same old Croft family melodrama the writers have been milking to DEATH, and hundreds upon hundreds of RPG-like NPC characters cosplaying as important side characters you should apparently care about. And then there's the ultimate king of all simps, Jonah.....

Shadow of the Tomb Raider, like so many other video games released recently, suffers greatly from the era during which it was released. In an attempt to appear inclusive, woke, and SJW-friendly game studios annually churn out bland, uninspired, and boring products with mediocre stories and characters. The game even begins with a short paragraph upon start that informs the player of its own inclusiveness. All that just to appease trigger-happy SJWs always ready to cause a social media storm (there are many indigenous tribes portrayed in this game that could potentially result in allegations of racism/cultural appropriations). That alone should've been a huge warning sign for me. As if the previous two titles -- Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015) and Tomb Raider (2013) weren't bland, boring, and uninspired enough, Shadow of the Tomb Raider continues the tradition set by its boring predecessors from featuring classic Hollywood cliched plot & awful characters to gameplay that attempts to be everything other than a good Tomb Raider game. Gone are the days of intricate puzzles, atmospheric exploration, and immaculate score -- Tomb Raider has essentially become a glorified hunting simulator, and is just few steps away from being a full on RPG grind fest. These new games are really not Tomb Raider games, they just happen to include that name in their titles.

To say this final chapter in Lara Croft's never ending origin story left a bitter taste in my mouth would be an understatement. The franchise is almost like a study in "can Crystal Dynamics possibly get Tomb Raider even MORE WRONG?" -- the people who own the Tomb Raider brand know zilch about why the original games are such highly valued classics, and as a fan of Tomb Raider and Lara Croft since 1996 -- this is extremely frustrating. I'm not gonna play the whole silly "it's not a bad game, it's just not a good Tomb Raider game" nonsense many have succumbed to. That might've been valid for the first two titles in the reboot series, but Shadow of the Tomb Raider is just NOT fun to play. PERIODT. It's a tedious and soulless experience.

It is a welcome change that this time you have almost no combat, the "arenas" created for it look nice, with tons of ammo and you are supposed to do stealth, but the stealth is not very good and you end up using the bow from the same position a lot.

is it fun? , not really, a lot of grinding beyond the story to egt achievements, but if you liked the first two games in this trilogy, you will LOVE this one.

I find it utterly depressing that Uncharted is so much more Tomb Raider right now than Tomb Raider itself and no wonder this was no doing very well in terms of sales. I was such a Tomb Raider fan but really had to force myself to finish this and then didn't bother with the DLC. It's a beautifully made game, with cool mechanics and greater-than-life graphics, but I think the name us wrong: it should be called "Psychopath Simulator". After playing it I felt that I'm not sure if I like the protagonist at all, which is not what I expect to feel in games.

Lara Croft massacres people. She kills them from up close, with knives through their back, from the shadows. And after slaughtering a few men, she can talk to an NPC and hear that he's sad, and suddenly her puppy eyes look so sad as well. She seems like a machine that learned the motion. I can't buy her air of fragility when she keeps massacring people - where's the PTSD? Feeling of regret? Even thoughts of "am I right in doing that?". No sir, she storms the tombs like a one person storm trooper, and feels nothing. I'm having difficulties finishing the game because this is chilling my blood. My own protagonist scares me. This is not a good storytelling - I've played many Naughty Dog games, and it's not like that.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider isn't a bad game, but it falls short.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider plays it way too safe. It feels like I am playing a big story DLC for Rise of the Tomb Raider. While this can be considered a good thing, I see it as the publisher not taking enough risk, and pushing out cookie cutter games. There are improves here and there, but the game lacks the polish Rise had.

There are improves here and there, but the game lacks the polish Rise had. Animations are jankier, optimization seems worse, clipping, glitches are more evident. But again, its not horrible, but noticable.

Story wise, the game actually makes you kinda hate Lara. She essentially makes a huge mistake, doesn't own up to it, and tries going right back to again save the world from Trinity! Not only do I hate playing as the main character, but her reason to exist is to fight Trinity. Again, the story is played too safe by just continuing the Trinity organization that I thought ended in Rise. Can we atleast be fighting something different now?

Originally, I was not going to review this game. After though of hearing the review bombing because of the discount weeks after release, I decided that I couldn't give the game a pass anymore. It was the build up of everything wrong with this game, and the discount was just the cherry on the top. It shows alot when a game is put on sale weeks after release, not to the customers who willing bought the game, but to the publisher essentially showing their newly released game isn't worth $60, never mind the boat loads for the other editions.

--The Missteps of Shadow of the Tomb Raider--
Planning DLC before the game's release.
Ridiculous DLC pricing, pre-orders, and editions.
Focusing on RTX NVIDIA technology instead of core elements of the game.

What I liked (in general and in comparison with Larisa in 2016):
    - the well-designed jungle: they really look alive and full of some kind of plausible flora and fauna.
    - the story went a little bit into a more personal adventure and added a little drama (just a little bit).
    - there were hubs (cities) with their lives and population (albeit scripted).
    - added some new mechanics, but they could have been added before because they would have fit into the overall gameplay.
    - The motivation of the antagonist is pleasing - at least not typical for villains of this genre of games.
What I did not like (in general, and compared to Larissa in 2016):
    - everything is super scripted: somewhere the game helps you on purpose, and somewhere you can't get caught in the obvious ledge or jump on a plane.
    - the characters' experiences and their "game" are too underplayed in all aspects.
    - the game has turned out to be a hyper simple - as example: a skill that allows you to no longer press the lead button and more other things.
    - the passage of tombs and crypts does not motivate anybody to get some really useful cookie after passing a couple of such places.
    - for me personally, being able to kraft and change clothes is a completely useless thing in the game.
    - expected more drama from the story, and in the end only 2 or 3 scenes/levels were remembered and that's it.
    - sad from the ending at all, because I didn't expect it to be the same. But on the plus side, at least she's somehow ending Larissa's dialogue/triology of adventure.
    - the main character's appearance is less attractive, but the hips are still good.

From the new trilogy, i would say this game is the weakest. The story is literally a trashy, uniniteresting blob and the same goes for all characters except maybe Lara and Jonah who have good chemistry but are separated far too often.
Locations are the worst in the series, there's nothing interesting in them and the only saving grace are the challenge tombs.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Play right after 2nd game, otherwise you will not understand a thing. Overall worth playing to finish off the franchise and put it to rest. Not worth purchasing at full price for sure.

    Graphical Issues:
    - Very basic, but the image output is very dull (bright areas aren't bright enough and mix up with shadows). Adding Nvidia game filter for clarity fixed it, but this should not be an issue for a AAA game.
    - It's been 4 years since release, and the dxgi_error_device_hung error that causes you to crash every 30 minutes still hasn't been fixed. It's not my GPU, Cyberpunk 2077 runs totally fine on maximum settings (no RT). I have a feeling the game has a VRAM leak or something similar.
    - The Hidden Village location runs at below 60 FPS (vs usual 90 FPS everywhere else) and drops to below 40 FPS in some spots even on all minimum settings with "ultra performance" DLSS setting on. Nobody bothered to fix it.

    So many plot holes too:
    - What does everyone speak English? I mean sure, Lara is a linguist or whatever, but since when does Jonah (the ship cook from 1st game) speak perfect ancient Incan?
    - The hidden village is so hidden, Jonah and Lara were able to get there by boat without issues.
    - They make a point of Lara hiding her weapons and wearing local clothing when entering this "ancient" hidden village society, they forget about it in the last cut scenes where she's wearing modern gear and weapons and all.

    Plot:
    - I didn't understand half of it.
    - I am not sure what the rebellion is, if they all just hangout in the city with the bad guy guards and nobody cares.
    - Trinity, what Trinity? Oh yeah. Never mind the build up from the 2nd game. You are just informed they are killed off over the radio.

    Some game elements are bizarre:
    - The dialect learning is pointless now, there aren't enough things to discover and it's just 1 dialect instead of 3 in the last game.

It's true that Shadow of the TR has a lot more puzzle segments than action, which is only good because Tomb Raider games should be primarily about tomb raiding and exploration, action and shooting should always be secondary. However, there could at least be some enemies respawning when you decide to go back through the cleared areas. At that point, your ammo is useless because there really isn't anyone to kill, just animals. But overall it was a great experience playing this game.
I don't know why people are so picky, but this game deserves a higher overall score.

He is unresponsive and he has no soul). Are we in a battle or are we in a journey with Lara? I could not decide, you choose if you really know what’s been going on for years in the games. About game, control and playing. I could not see a huge difference if I look at the graphics quality. It looks like Rise of the Tomb Raider. If you want Tomb Raider to be a different game from others which are compared with it, first make something different such as graphics and well-scenario which is NOT predictable, tedious and monotonous. I am not really that kind of person who is obsessed with graphics but in these years, graphics is considered as an important feature and I want this game series to be known well. Secondly, awful game mechanics. It destroyed the game play in some parts. To continue, Lara… As a woman gamer, I even didn’t have any problem with Lara’s old look (big boobs, good body or sexy clothes etc.) She is not a model, but she looks like she is -in new games. I really wanted to see Lara’s classic outfit for the new game, and her dual pistols. Huge disappointment. The first thing comes to mind is her dual pistols, not an arrow. About personality, did you realize that Lara is ready to cry in new games? Come on! Please do not touch and destroy Lara and her journeys anymore OR get help from people who knows what Tomb Raider is! Expand

Unfortunately, I really had to force myself to finish this one, and having looked forward to it so much I am extremely disappointed. There were virtually no satisfying combat moments, too much pointless wondering around areas, far too much cutscene based "story" which, by the way, was totally insipid, vapid and morally patronising. It's like the devs thought the main demographic that plays Tomb Raider games are 12 yr old girls or something that they have some moral responsibility to educate. There were many cutscene based dialogue moments that just didn't need to be in the game, like Lara taking the parasite out of Jonas' arm. What the hell was the point of that scene and dialogue?

This new Lara has now being constrained to simply a "safe" role model for young feminists / girls and has lost all her sultry sexiness and backbone which made her so appealing in the first game. The other characters in the story were all so "PG" too. There's not even a real bad guy in the story, the bad guy ends up being kinda "nice" too!

Too safe, Too vapid, Too vanilla. Too weak.

On the positive it's entirely safe to let your 5 year old daughter play it, which was probably the intention.

I have 100% completed 2013, on both PC and Xbox, and that game had an underrated multiplayer. It did everything right. Rise of the Tomb Raider improved upon it in much the same way that Arkham City improved upon Arkham Asylum. Even though I'm not the target audience for these kind of games, I really appreciated their quality and design, as well as the graphics.

But Shadow is just inexcusably bad. It might be because it's not Crystal Dynamics. Everything about this game, except the graphics, feels like a step back. The story is even more nonsensical, it's not gripping at all and the characters are very bland. Gameplay-wise, it's 90% exploration of caves and perhaps 5% combat. There's a lot of side quests and collectibles littered around, but you soon realise all of it is pointless, because despite having a large skill tree and lots of weapons, most of them are unusable because the game provides very few opportunities to engage in combat how you want. It's heavily stealth focused, which is fine but a large part of the skill tree and weapons are for aggressive combat. There is very little action in this, the genre this game belongs to can only be described as "adventure"; and that's putting it kindly, given how bland that adventure is.
So you end up having lots of resoruces and fully upgrading all your weapons, but never get to use them. And then there's the outfits system, which is pointless too in the definitive edition because all the Definitive Edition ones are unlocked from the start, and look a lot better than the ones you unlock throughout the game. The game is just so restrictive with what weapons and outfits you can use, and lacks both good level design and action sequences.
This largely mirrors my experience with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided: the developers put in a good number of weapons and abilities, but you never get the chance to use them because the game is so thin on actual content, it's mostly filler.

If all you want is a game that looks good and don't care about gameplay, this is fine. I honestly upgraded to RTX graphics card for this game and was expecting to be amazed, but really it doesn't look THAT much better than Rise. The ray-tracing is for shadows only, and RTX Medium shadows looks better than High or Ultra RTX, and actually RTX off and shadows on Ultra actually looks better in some scenes. So it's just a gimmick. DLSS works reasonably well, but the HDR in this game is horrible, one of the worst I've come across and relies on the Windows setting, not the driver.

The controls are also a downgrade. Whilst it natively supports DualShock 4, the reload button doesn't work for some reason. The actual traversal of the environment is inconsistent too. Sometimes Lara won't grab ledges, and the path isn't always obvious because of the spacing and lack of clear indicators. The other two games were excellent in this regard, but Shadow just feels off.

Overall, I can't recommend this game, regardless of whether you enjoyed the previous two in the trilogy. It's very bland, lacks variety and is very thin on action. It's mostly just filler.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a pretty game, but it’s a complete slog to play. It provides an excellent example of how the focus on graphics of the “Triple A” space of the game industry is causing serious detriment to the overall quality of games.

The graphics, being the game’s greatest strength, are also one of its greatest weaknesses. Environments are very pretty, but they’re busy to the point of making it nearly impossible to navigate. The game has a perception key that provides a quest marker and highlights (some) interactable objects, and you’ll find yourself having to press it every five seconds while playing. Even then, you’ll frequently struggle with trying to figure out which piece of hanging rope is important and which of the 57 rock ledges can be grabbed. While environments are varied, the game’s animations are too repetitive. You’ll frequently see the same loop for deaths, taking breaths while swimming, shuffling under things, squeezing through openings, and many other actions.

The controls are unintuitive, taking hours to learn and even then requiring prompts for some of the obscure actions. Once the player has learned them, they still don’t work consistently, usually killing the player when they decide not to.

Worldbuilding is rather poor. The modern areas were interesting and believable, but the generic NPCs are utterly lifeless, just repeating the same actions repeatedly and having little to no interactivity. The ruins, meanwhile, often seem to exist for the sake of ruins. They’ll be in places that seem logistically impossible, lack any sort of sensible access and entrances, and just overall be in better condition than seems probable. There are also things which seem to exist purely for getting in the player’s way. For example, at one point the player has to lower an ancient drawbridge to get across a river. Why would there be a drawbridge in a civilization with no river traffic beyond canoes? There are numerous examples of puzzles and environments like this, where there appears to be no logical basis for the existence of these constructions. Another issue with worldbuilding regards the hostile animals. The player can be attacked by piranhas, which instantly kills them. In reality, piranhas are relatively docile regarding humans, and in the case that they do attack one, they’ll cause minor injuries and are almost never fatal. The player can also be attacked by jaguars, which is incredibly rare unless cornered, as they’re afraid of humans. Multiple jaguars can attack the player at once, which is another mathematical impossibility, because they’re solitary animals.

The writing was bad at times, but the overall story was interesting (at least the first third was, as I couldn’t stand the gameplay beyond that point). Dialogue was good and the voice acting excellent, but the protagonists were frequently saved by deus ex machina and plot holes were prevalent. Characters also seemed fairly one dimensional, with a few exceptions such as Jonah.

There are issues with the camera. In cramped areas, it often gets stuck on rocks, leaving you unable to see what you’re doing, and when you aim your weapons, it jitters and makes hitting your targets difficult.

The game suffers from poorly-implemented cutscenes. Control is frequently taken from the player for seemingly no reason, and it’s not always clear when it’s been returned. In hostile environments, this can kill the player. There are other instances where the game effectively has a cutscene, but it requires the player to hold the forward key for progression. You can’t even control the camera in these instances. What is the point?

The stealth is poor, and it is the reason that I gave up on the game. When using stealth, enemies act practically brain-dead, but they generally stay next to each other such that killing one alerts the rest. If you do alert the enemies, then your chances of using stealth are over. This is fine for the first third of the game, as you could use stealth to take down a few enemies that were separated and then take up a defensive position for gunning the rest down. The problem arose when the game decided that, despite the presence of loaded weaponry and lack of penalty for allowing the firing of said weaponry, you just weren’t allowed to use it. I personally couldn’t stand spending half an hour to kill six enemies, especially when the means to kill them all in less than five seconds existed but was simply barred from me for no good reason, so I gave up.

All in all, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a very pretty game. It’s just not fun to play. The budget needed to be spent on better playtesting rather than graphics. The overall story is what kept me playing for as long as I did, but the plot could have been better-written rather than relying so heavily on cliches and highly improbable occurrences. Furthermore, the characters could be better-developed.

The first reboot was amazing and Lara was beautiful and sexy. This is now the politically correct version. The game also has too much pointless walking, no-fun killings and a dumb story. What is outrageous is that there are even socialist agendas in the game, like conversations such as:

-"They don’t paying us a living wage!!!!!!!!!" - we should have Commie Sanders to do something!

    - "...and they sell the relics for PROFIT" - oh, because profit is so EVIL kiddos!

    - "They are after money, not history!" - because money is so BAD kiddos, and the two can't go together at all.

-"The oil company left us when the oil price went down!" - because they should have stayed there and working for losses, right? Oh those greedy bastards, they wanted to keep their company!

If you are interested in history overall this game very nicely presents Inca and Maya culture, they desires, gods, artifacts etc. Exploration and searching for all shrines, items, letters is really enjoyable if history or peek into another cultures is what you are looking for. If you like to play game only for purpose of puzzles than probably this game do not tick very well, unless you are completionist person who enjoy games in that sense.

If you played two Laras games before from this trilogy, you basicaly played it "all" and this game do not provide nothing more, except everything is just better - graphics, fluidity of gameplay etc. mayby only story doesnt feel "epic" as before, but I liked it nevertheless.

Lara was in trilogy shown as woman with little girls mind wishing to be with her parents. Nothing changes here, nevertheless she kills like true brutal hero, ruthless and maliciously - if you enjoy stealth. Overall in many games I prefer take gun and shoot, but in this game stealth worked for me better, just only as fun factor. From me, its really cool. And I have really enjoyed one of cinematics where I said to myself: "ok, girl, now you are talking" and that scene will be one of my favorite for very long time.

Its basically arcade game wth many scripted events, and game provides more cinematic experience than before.

You can use only one type of any weapon or armor - most probably at hard difficulty another weapons make difference.

If you are able to forgive illogical things, than this game is really good.

That said, the only reason I finished this game was to finish it.

Very disappointing. Very little in the way of action, veeerrrry sloooow pacing. Lots of exploration if that's your thing, but for me this game is dragging in a way the first two did not. The game mainly takes place in a Mayan city (in Inca country :|), where you spend hours doing fetch quests for the villagers for no good reason I can see. Can't fight anyone, can't even draw weapon. Sadly, as you get further into the game the rails become even more constricting. The side quests do become less trivial, but they do not become less tedious.

The climbing/stunt mechanics are the same as the first two games, but somewhat over-elaborated. The current iteration is over reliant on gadgets such as a magic ice pick that deploys a cable to enable you to 'rappel' down cliff faces, then apparently psionically detatches itself, coils it's own line and turns back into a normal ice pick. Oh it also shoots out said magic line to hook on things while you are in mid-air to enable you to swing around.

This handy utensil is used by Lara in the service of a plot line that's been recycled from the last game (Rise of the Tomb Raider) and is showing it's wear.

Apocalypse only Lara can prevent? Check
    Trinity? Check
HIdden city full of that somehow survived unnoticed for God knows how long? Check

The first Tomb Raider was a bit on the shooty side but this one seems like the early episodes of ST:TNG- lots of evil doers around but somehow nobody ever uses violence to solve things. The developers are lucky they disabled weapons or I would have ended their game about a third of the way in when the major villain passes by about fifteen feet in front of Lara in said Mayan city. The few encounters with Trinity forces in which Lara is in combat are in a way the most disappointing parts of the whole game. Obvious stealth rails are obvious. In the first iteration, the action came at you relentlessly and you really felt some tension. In this game, with one partial exception, you plow through the poor schmoos with little difficulty, unless you do something superlatively stupid. The partial exception was in an oil refinery. That part was exciting and had some kick to it. The rest of the game left me flat and disappointed.

The rails are really apparent and they take all the fun out of the game. I don't necessarily have to fight my way into Himiko's castle to have fun, but finding some rando Mayan kid's dice is something I can do with.out.

There's actually the bones of a good story and a good game in here, but unfortunately the execution is not adequate to pull it off. Scenes that are intended to be discussions of morality and philosophy are shallow and without real affect. Flashbacks to Lara's childhood, intended to outline her growth, are not engaging. I did not have any real interest in either, which is too bad, because that's what this game was supposed to be strong in.

In the end, it's a button masher with cutscenes. That's a real pity, because the first two outings were more than that.

One of the commenters to my initial review seemed to think more puzzles and less shooting made this game more like the original Tomb Raider. If that's the case, I'll take the 2013 Lara any day of the week.

You know, I think I do want to go storm Himiko's castle again and rescue Sam.

Im was a very passionate about the series and if somehow you made me forget about this game, i would still be. So i bought the game, over-priced, 2 months before the release, so hyped because at the time i had ended 100% of Rise of the Tomb Raider and i loved the entire game, top to bottom, so the premise of this game being the end of those two amazing previously games got me so hooked up.

Wish i had saw this coming... the game released with some bugs, not letting me play for the first weeks, which i found funny, cause i paid more for some "limited offer" that had last 3 to 4 months after the release, i couldn't play in the miserable two days that they have "given" for those who pre-ordered and after 1 month they put the game on sale. This scenario enraged me, made me feel scammed and this why my score is a big zero, if this was not happened to me, i would give a 3 or 4, and here's why:
    - The color scheme sometimes gave me feeling of tiredness, i believe the darker greens makes this.
    - The idea of the plot is good, but poorly executed, which made the game boring and pointless until the end.
    - The end which you would expect something meaningful for a end of a trilogy and the end of the prelude, that will lead us for the classic Lara, there's nothing special, doesn't look like at a end for this game, and if you'd to guess that the remake for the classics come next, you'll never.
    - Last boss, doesn't look like a boss, just a regular enemy that you didn't hit kill.
    - The controls sometimes didn't respond to my commands making Lara skip some commands, for jumps, most frequently.
    - The limitation for outfits in some areas. [BAD]
    - The DLCs not adding nothing important to the plot.
    - The predominance of tribal outfits. [BAD]
    - The only good points are the attempt to make Lara an "anti-hero" and the "enraged Lara" scene.

    And that's it.

You can't just change graphics assets and sell it again. Don't become second Bethesda. Yes, there is RTX, but so what? No good gameplay, no good story, there isn't anything "Good". Before buying please, reconsider buying something else. This should be just a DLC to the second new Lara.

Played through story in 14 hours (finally I payed for it and hoped it would become better). I am really angry now that I spent money on this crap. Whole experiance was lame, irrelevant and boring. I did like Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider... but this one is a waste of money. I regret the purchase.

Unsurprisingly the gameplay and art design are solid enough to engage the player for a few hours, however they are ultimately rather generic as well and nowhere near strong enough to stand on their own.
This feels even more like it's trying to be Uncharted than the previous entries in the reboot series, while still failing to understand or rather ignoring what makes the Uncharted franchise good.

We are left with a game that is by no means outright bad, however I have a hard time recommending a game where every aspect is just ok. You might as well play any of the previous entries again and you wouldn't be missing out on much.

Unfortunately this is the worst of the three new Tomb Raider games. Why?

    2) 95% of the game takes place in the jungle which feels quite repetitive a few hours into the game.

    3) I read that the challenge tombs were supposed to be more challenging this time but that's not the case. They're just as short and simple as before.

    4) They've pretty much killed combat and there are very few combat encounters now. When you actually get to a combat sequence it's always focused towards stealth. In many cases you can't even use guns but are forced to use your bow. Why even have weapons and a resource collection + upgrade system for them when you almost never have to use them?

    5) Because of 4) crafting any gear is also pointless. I play on Hard and never crafted anything since there are so few combat encounters it won't really matter.

    Verdict:

The game doesn't really bring anything new and takes too many steps back, mainly with combat. I was a bit worried when they changed development team and unfortunately it was not for the better. If you really liked the previous two games and want more of the same then get this, otherwise don't. It's a good thing this will be the last game in the series because this last entry clearly show that it doesn't have a future.

Certainly not a bad game, but it's largely the same as the 2016 Tomb Raider. I'd never played a Tomb Raider prior to the 2016 release, and I was pleasantly surprised with the experience. I also thought, however, that it was a bit of a grind what with all the fetch quests and scavenger hunts. While I beat the game, I don't remember the plot at all.

I also thought, however, that it was a bit of a grind what with all the fetch quests and scavenger hunts. While I beat the game, I don't remember the plot at all.

SOTTR is basically the exact same thing as ROTTR. The main differences are that (a) there's more cut scenes with your partner, Jonah; (b) Jonah is, overall, a much bigger part of the story; (c) there's parts of the game that take place in civilization, i.e., small towns and villages, so it has a bit of an RPG feel to it in that regard (this was, by far, the best addition to the title); and (d) the graphics are improved, though this is a bit apples to oranges for me since I played ROTTR on a console, and SOTTR on a suped-up P.C. on max settings.

Just like ROTTR, I'm not terribly interested in the plot. That's a shame, because the game makes you sit through a lot of cut scenes related to same. The base camp upgrade system is exactly the same as from the previous game. Overall, it's not a bad game, and it looks great on an amped-up P.C. It's just a bit boring after a little while - running around, spamming the "Q" button for "survival instincts," i.e., highlighting boxes to break, enemies, etc., looking around, breaking open a box, repeat, ad infinitum. I've not finished the game yet, but I've heard there's not a lot of combat. So far, I concur. That's going to be a problem, since the non-combat elements of the game (save for the tombs/crypts) are a bit boring (see above).

I really want to give this game an 8 or even a 9, but the issues set the game back too far.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider does a lot of things right, but also does some things that were done "okay" in the previous 2 titles far, far worse.
Pacing is an absolute nightmare. You constantly feel like you're being shoved along through the story and any emotional moments feel like they don't

Pacing is an absolute nightmare. You constantly feel like you're being shoved along through the story and any emotional moments feel like they don't stick and are swiftly forgotten.

Traversal, this is the first in the series where i've had issues with the controls while climbing. Almost all of my deaths have been due to Lara not jumping far enough(in a scripted event) or just plain refusing to latch onto a wall.

Combat, while I appreciate the game going back to its roots of less human enemies and more animal enemies. It also made encounters primarily stealth, with terrible AI and if seen, you end up fighting the most aggressive enemies I have ever encountered to a point where it feels pointless to use anything other than a shotgun for most of the game. Melee attacking is far worse and the bow received a very, very heavy reduction in power from previous titles.

Graphics, no complaints here other than it being extremely heavy on the CPU load with a lot of stuttering without external tweaking. Game looks amazing and blatantly better than the previous 2 games.

Sadly, this was not the conclusion to the trilogy I had hoped for. Lara STILL has a lot to learn and honestly, her voice actor feels like her only emotions are anger and gasping for air.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am rather disappointed. The first game was amazing. It had good progression and the environments where great with a good story. Second game was even better, different gear with different progression and more unique environments. This game has none of that. You start the game with all your tools you had at the end of the 2nd tomb raider. You don't get new tools to work with except for some climbing boots, but they don't add much if any at all to the game. You start out in a jungle and you end in a jungle. the first two game had fun collectables that you can turn and look at and lara would give you some banter about it, that's not here. the challenge tombs feel to simple. Like there is just one puzzle and that's it. The ones before felt like they had multiple puzzles that combined to make one big puzzle. You spend about what feels like 60-70% of the game just platforming. I would suggest to go back and play the first or second one. I am disappointed with my purchase compared to the previous instalments. Expand

Combat system got worst, the half baked stealth combat is just bad with sometimes dumb AI or incredible good AI that will just know where you are and tracking bullets that will hit you no matter what (also sometimes you will need one and half a clip to kill an enemy)

Main campaign puzzles are bad and easy, and tombs while I haven't complete them all yet I can say they're all right... (prob the only saving point of this game) explorations there isn't much to do most of the game is linear even when you go away from the main campain history you will always have a 1 path to fallow regardless so finding tombs is not that hard.

Bad game, buy it only if you really really really are a fan or want to do the tombs but for history don't expect to be entertained. ONly buy if is 75% off I regreat buying it when it was 50% off tbh.....

Easy stuff out of the way, graphics are GREAT. Sound design and music are both GREAT. Set pieces and art design is GREAT. Voice acting and acting are good. Story is absolutely forgettable.

So what makes this game a 6/10? The questionable gameplay loop that focuses on exploration and puzzles. Don't get me wrong, the puzzles and the exploration are good, but they tend to drag on for so long without seeing something to shoot or someone to talk to (no, Lara radioing in to report to an ally does not count as meaningful conversation!). It gets boring solving the really long puzzles, no matter how inventive and creative it gets.

And then there are really long bouts of running around villages, talking to people, and looting stuff. It's just...boring. Especially since Lara are Jonah are the only recurring characters, Lara never seems to create meaningful bonds with other characters. This fits Lara's rather nomadic, adventurer personality, but it makes for a lifeless world. A game series with long "village" loops (lots of running around, doing sidequests, talking to NPCs) that works is the Mass Effect series (not counting the train wreck that is Andromeda). Why? Because your player character has agency - you can affect the outcome of the quests. Plus, a lot of the quests directly involve party members, so it's fun to see how your party members react to/affect your questline. ROTTR has absolutely NONE of those fun elements.

What I'm getting at is that the game inherently has a weird gameplay loop and gameplay design with overly long segments. Puzzles drag on per segment, village exploration drags on per segment, combat areas drag on as well. With the way the world is structured, there's just no way around this kind of gameplay loop. A game with a fun puzzle-exploration-combat loop was Darksiders II. The puzzle solving was easily broken up with bouts of fighting enemies and bosses; this makes all the difference. ROTTR can't do that because it's rooted in semi-realism - enemies can't just pop up in between puzzles to break up the monotony unlike Darksiders II.

To be honest, I'm glad this series is over. This gritty, realistic Lara is cool (super hot, super badass, nice soothing voice, etc.), but she and the world around her is boring, and that's despite the supernatural elements interspersed in the game. I think the franchise needs to return to the more action-oriented, fantastical Tomb Raider; this trilogy is an instance where semi-realism gets in the way of good gameplay. Gameplay > realism ALWAYS. Game dev 101.

I hope this trilogy doesn't kill the Tomb Raider series, because it has so much potential. The devs just need to have fun with it. Give Lara interesting guns, make her stronger, more agile, and all-around more fun to play as. Give her enemies greater depth and variety, realism be damned. Make her fight ancient terrifying monsters, large and small, on a regular basis, not just towards the climax. Make it a large, semi-open world (the one thing Andromeda got right) where she can be badass and ride a dirtbike loaded with her badass gear. Give her a small group of allies that stay with her throughout the journey that comment on her choices and her adventures. Give her agency over questlines. Insert fun and interesting ways to break up puzzle-solving and exploration. Give more meaningful weapon customization. The sky is the limit. There is so much that can be done to revitalize this franchise gone wrong. And for goodness' sake, GIVE HER BACK THE SIGNATURE DUAL PISTOLS, REALISM.BE.DAMNED.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider strives to introduce new but very unnecessary mechanics on its playability, to give as a result a very week narrative and story, a very weird pacing on its gameplay but a puzzle and exploration component very strong, which will make you think twice when solving its tombs and to keep your eyes very open in the middle of the exploration of an open area, but still itShadow of the Tomb Raider strives to introduce new but very unnecessary mechanics on its playability, to give as a result a very week narrative and story, a very weird pacing on its gameplay but a puzzle and exploration component very strong, which will make you think twice when solving its tombs and to keep your eyes very open in the middle of the exploration of an open area, but still it feels like it remained way behind the evolution of games of its same genre.

Nevertheless, I must admit it is the game that most sticks to the nature of old Tomb Raider games, but because of this it stuck itself in a very ancient formula in terms of mechanics.

The story itself is the most mediocre of the trilogy, while it was meant to show us how Lara evolved since the first game in terms of how she sees the world of a treasure hunter, she suddenly takes a dagger perfectly placed in the deep of a cave just as an ancient and valuable treasure would be without taking into account its consequences, which she actually did in previous games, so this intermediately contradicts the aim of the game of showing "a raper Lara".

One of the few things that stand out of this slight mess are its visuals, achieving spectacular landscapes and a very detailed modeling and illumination, turning into one of the games with most awesome visuals of this generation, but this seems quite opaqued for its questionable optimization, in which it's worth to say this game its protected by the Denuvo anti-tamper, which obviously repercutes negatively on its performance.

Conclusion: at least that you have a +$1500 worth PC, I wouldn't recommend you to buy this game in this platform. Shadow of the Tomb Raider fails on the good story-telling that previous game achieved, sometimes feeling it takes you thorough kind of randomized scenes in a single sequence, introducing little creative mechanics on its gameplay worth to call it a new part of the series due to its desire of sticking to the firsts Lara Croft games, staying way behind the rest of its genre games. Nevertheless, this desire its worth to highlight from the developers although they didn't carry through the concept very well and evolving the exploration and tombs concept of the series.

    Recommended price: under $25

I've read that some people are complaining about graphics, that it's too old, shadows are low quality etc., but I think graphics are decent - especially characters animations.

Sound quality is really good, especially in the scene with jaguars - that moment was like a movie, great sound.

There is one thing of this game that some will take as negative aspect - Shadow of the Tomb Raider lacks of combat with enemies. There's really not much combat scenes in this game. In both TR 2013 and ROTTR there was more fight scenes. I personally don't think it's a breaking point of the game - because for me Tomb Raider franchise always been about exploring map, exploring tombs, crypts, looting etc. Although it kinda makes weapon upgrades useless, because like I mentioned, there's not much combat scenes, I'd recommend to upgrade your bow first - this'll be one of the most important tool in the game.

In conclusion, I'd say this - if you liked Tomb Raider 2013 and Rise of the Tomb Raider, you probably gonna like this one too, cause it's pretty much the same - same sandbox with tons of tombs, some challenges, looting, getting xp and skill points and some tiny combat sequences.

    Stagnant gameplay.

An endless amount of hooks and arrows, when you use a rope(Come one, give me a little more logic). Cliché: every important thing will fall out of the pockets directly to your enemy's hands. The map is too fixed to icons(it was always a pain to search something when your mouse simply didn't want to move from some icon). You cannot take an assault rifle from a soldier's corpse because you can only take it when the script allows you in the cut-scene. No bag upgrades for herbs. Most of the clothes sets repeat the properties(no seriously, half of them almost the same with difference in icon and name). Bad realization of extra information when you read about found objects.
And the most disappointing: No bosses and difficult enemies. Only one last boss.

I like the maya stuff and graphics are great too.
There are more thrilling cinematic moments in comparison to the predecessor Rise of the Tomb Raider.
But frankly speaking - as a casual player - some quests have been too tricky for my taste.

Let's see, you've got: brutal killing of wild animals, cultural appropriation, stereotypical portrayal of natives, a woman lead with daddy issues, and of course the most controversial butt in the history of butts-- it's all there. And this was a game that originally tried to pander to feminists by making Lara Croft less sexual and more human. So now you've angered the side of the political spectrum you originally tried to appease, while simultaneously having angered the other side for ever giving into their demands in the first place. So essentially, thanks to politics we already have a game that everybody hates. If this game ends up being a massive flop, which is seeming likely at this point, let this be a lesson to game developers not to try to gain favor with certain political groups. Stick to keeping the game fun, and staying faithful to the series.

Anyway, the game is really good, and it sucks that politics may have killed it. Since PC gamers build PCs to get better graphics than console gamers, let's start with that. Honestly, it took me ages of tweaking this game to really figure out how to get the best mix of quality and performance. First of all, there is something you may want to do. Go into task manager and set CPU priority to high. Like magic, the stuttering in the game will stop and you'll get a huge fps boost. This is the only game I've had to do this on, and it's really annoying that the stuttering issue is even there. You'll have to do this every time you open the game, unfortunately. People with 8-core CPUs may not have this issue, but I'm using an i5 7600. So, you'll probably notice upon starting this game that it's crushing your hardware. I'm using a 980 ti(pretty comparable to a 1070), and it's pushing it to the limit. This is not due to poor optimization, it's due to the fact that this is a really graphically demanding game and they made the game with 4k/30fps in mind, clearly. They also clearly intended to take advantage of it's unique antialiasing. It's not hard to get a playable 30 fps in 4k on my hardware. I can't use max settings(some of the stuff murders frame-rate), but I can get close to it. But obviously PC gamers want 60 fps, right? This seems problematic at first, even if the game is running at a stable 60 fps in some parts, it will plummet in other parts. Luckily, the Tomb Raider games have this amazing feature that I wish every game had where the game will adjust it's resolution to the size of the window in window mode, and to make it even easier, you can scale the resolution down in window mode easily. And this Tomb Raider also has some amazing high-level AA that will make even low resolutions look better. What I did was used SMAATX2 and reduced the height of my screen. Reducing the height will put it into ultra-wide screen mode. You'd be amazed how good the frame-rate is in ultra-wide screen(3840x720 has about the same frame-rate as 1920x1080). And the smaller screen size on your monitor will make the lower resolution easier on your eyes. The ultra-aggressive AA can make the lower resolution tolerable. Get the screen to the size you want and use the resolution modifier until eventually you get a solid 60 fps. Like I said, I got something great on an i5 and a 980 ti, though there is no way for me to actually know what the resolution was. In 60 fps, ultra-wide screen, with the fancy AA, this is probably the best looking game on the PC, surpassing even Quantum Break. In 4k/30 fps, it surpasses even God of War on the PS4 Pro, even if that game has more impressive lighting effects. And if you have a PC that can do 4k with SMAAx4 and ultra-settings then it will look even better, but I was getting like 17 fps with those settings. At least the game is future-proof. If you want 1080p/144 fps/max settings, then GL w/ that.

So all I've talked about is politics and graphics so far and I'm reaching the character limit. So, how is the gameplay? Basically, you should listen to the positive reviews and not the lower reviews from people who are most likely just mad over the size of Lara's butt/breasts. The game gives the fans what they wanted, mainly more puzzles and less combat, and vastly improved stealth. I really hate the stealth in Uncharted(and in general), but I like this. They cut back on open world elements a bit too, since people complained. Frankly, I wish they hadn't, but oh well. As for the plot, it keeps the game flowing, but it's nothing to write home about...and I'm out of space. So, yeah, if you like the other TRs and you have a pretty powerful PC and you're not too bent out of shape about the politics just get it. Personally, I love it, and I'm sad it may end

The continuation of Tomb Raider is a good game. This time it seeks to differentiate itself from the Uncharted saga of which it is stigmatized with its first game of 2013. This time the beautiful Lara Croft is more lethal showing how she becomes the heroine that is remembered from the games of twenty years ago. Although, the adventure takes place in Latin America. This is a way of recalling the first adventures of the classic Lara Croft. It is observed that there are NPCs that speak in the language of the region, be it Spanish or Quechua for example. Another aspect that stands out more is the option to adjust the difficulty of the story, the puzzles, the confrontations, and the exploration. This makes the game more versatile.

Every fan of the old-school games and the previous recent games will have minor gripes, but they have done a fantastic job of making a modern Tomb Raider game while listening to the fans' complaints over the last few years. More tombs, more "supernatural" elements, more puzzles, tombs and exploration, with adjustable difficulty. The platforming still isn't quite as deadly as the 90's games, and even with puzzle and traversal difficulties on the hardest setting Lara still yells out a few too many hints, and the tutorial icons still remind you when you can do special moves like repelling. But those are small complaints. Everything about this game is lots of fun, from the pulpy, but satisfying, plot to poison arrows that make enemies turn on each other. I hope now that Lara is a proper tomb raider the next game brings a few more supernatural elements like dagger that turn men into giant dragons and statues that come alive when you least expect it. Lara could also do with a little of that James Bond feel she used to have. But seeing as I gave TR 2013 an 8, and Rise a 9, this one is a 10 even though there is a little room for improvement still. I'm glad I got it 2 days early on Stream. I do still have some puzzle tombs and side quests to finish. Then I can look forward to the season pass DLC coming over the next few months. Expand

The trilogy started good, and ended great. Shadow is the best entry in the rebooted trilogy, ending on a really high note. Fun and engaging content is granted, with a rollercoaster of emotions from beginning to end. Improves on everything from the previous entry, with a nice balance of old (from the classic Tomb Raider games) and new, with some nice easter eggs to older fans along the way. A must!

Think of the difference between this one and the last one as the difference between the Witcher 2 and 3, that's how major it is. Its become almost a full RPG experience now, with side quests, a sweet levelling system, craftable gear and exploration. The world is huge and there's so much hidden treasure to find, some of it really hidden well and requiring a sharp eye to locate. The quests aren't just handed to you on a plate either, you actually have to hunt for them now. The areas are beautifully detailed and jaw dropping, to the point where if you keep stopping to admire the art work you'll never finish the dang thing.
One of the main selling points for me is the new difficulty level. I breezed through the previous 2 titles, but this game had me scratching my head a lot, much like the original games did. More often than not you really have to look around and figure out viable ledges to grab onto, rather than it being obvious.
The level of detail, the small things that not many people notice, are really where it shines. Laura's boot hitting a skull as she traverses a ledge, which then rolls off and bounces down into a huge pit. The wildlife, which is absolutely everything and extremely varied, all of which can be hunted for crafting materials. Some much love and care has gone into this game, it's simply incredible. For me it's Lara first true move into a full open world experience, which I always hope would happen and now it has.
The combat is awesome too. You can approach combat situations in a variety of ways, using stealth, creating distractions, or just going in guns blazing. There's a huge amount of weapons and projectiles, like molotov, smoke grenades, fire arrows, just so much...you're really spoilt for choice.
Unlike the last title it's not just a bunch of cut scenes and set pieces either, trying to wow you by having some long sequence where Lara falls about 300 metres, crashing through this and that, only to get up unscathed. The game is now a lot more immersive.
I just hope this becomes the default recipe for tomb raider games now and they build and build on this formula. This is the game that Lara has deserved for many years now. A Tomb Raider for the new gaming age.
