    Here are a few PC's player thoughts on sea of thieves. First off I have to say the graphical and visual style make this game look bloody fantastic, like absolutely stunning. Second the fun you have with this game really does come from playing with friends, the laughs and silly moments make this game memorable, so if you are looking to play this game solo or dont have any friends interestedHere are a few PC's player thoughts on sea of thieves.     in short the base of the game has so much promise and potential but the content is not here and is not worth the £50/$60 price tag, if you want to try this game get the xbox game pass on the 2 week free trial, then see how you feel about it rather than wasting the money on an underwhelming game.    … Expand

    An early access game with a 60$ price tag. The missions are like free to play missions, zero depth and extremely repetitive. Once you get board of doing that then what? You can just drive around and fight other players and what happens when you get bored of that, pretty much nothing left to do except cry over your wasted 60$ and wish you bought Far Cry 5. (Disclaimer i played SOT with theAn early access game with a 60$ price tag. The missions are like free to play missions, zero depth and extremely repetitive. Once you get board of doing that then what? You can just drive around and fight other players and what happens when you get bored of that, pretty much nothing left to do except cry over your wasted 60$ and wish you bought Far Cry 5.     You pay £50 just to have a direct x 12 sea simulator.

    This game is the best and most exciting premier title with the best launch I've played in at least 5 years. That's coming from a classic gamer with over 25 years of gaming experience.

    I had such high expectations for this game but after just 3 hours of playing I'm trying to see if there is anything new to discover but I don't see anything new! I regret buying this game now I'm stuck with this empty trash till I get rid of it for cheap.

    This game has an amazing foundation. While never intended as a pve game, more than half the community are demanding it. While the server problems, lack of content and progression are well known. It is also well known that this game is also called "Sea of bullies" The pvp community has become so toxic in this game, it has reached new heights as far as I am concerned. You literally get 1 of 3 styles of quests, go do it, return, and get another of those 3 quest styles. It lacks a playerbase, it lacks content, it lacks a rewarding progressions system, it lacks a playerbase. One of the major issues with open-world games is finding entertaining events to do while travelling around the world. This game has nothing entertaining to do, all you can do is drink grog and play a small selection of repetitive songs. Literally 1 person can navigate, turn the ship, adjust the sails, manage damage, and manage the anchor, kill skeletons, and complete all styles of quests. 5 years of development for 2 hours of gameplay.

    As game developer I can't help but notice the lack of effort that went into this game. This is what made me come to the conclusion of scam. If you were to make an asset-list from all items, objects and things in the game. and compare this to other similarly priced games. You would start to understand what I mean. This game has about 10% of the effort put into it compared to your average $60 experience ($85 if you buy this in Europe)

    There are no cheap cosmetics, a getting hat will take you 5 hours of play (if you don't fool around) and changing your ship color or sail at least two full days of play. (and since barely anyone paints their ship, it's hard to tell them apart) This grind is there for two reasons: To keep you playing for longer, since there is not much else to play towards, and to sell future micro-transactions.

    One thing that personally stuck out to me as a sore thumb is the music. I love the concept that they made. There is no soundtrack, but you get two instruments, to play your own music with friends. It's really fun to make your own pirate song. But this hole thing turns into a pain when you realize there is only 4 songs, and not even the most known shanties. (maybe a few more you can discover, but haven't found any of them) After a while this will get to your nerves as they become very repetitive after hours of play. It is just a detail, but it shows the enormous lack of effort that went into this game. With this concept they could easily have made 30+ shanties or more varying instruments like a flute, a drum or a guitar.

    My recommendation: don't, DO NOT, buy this game at full price. But surely check it out with the xbox game-pass. It's worth experiencing, but not worth wasting money on. This game is another example of sickness that is spreading in the Industry.    … Expand

    Let's just say this is a more up to date version of "No Man's Sky". Fun for 5 hours. Then you figure out that in those five hours, you've seen all there is to see. No progression. Nothing. No replay-ability. You're just as tough on day 10 of playing as you are on day one. - No feeling of accomplishment - No penalty for death (except sitting waiting to respawn in 30 seconds back onLet's just say this is a more up to date version of "No Man's Sky". I figured, to purchase A BUCKET (which you get for free on spawn in)...... you would have to dig up, over 84 chests. For a bucket. A single bucket. And that's for the cheap stuff. - But get this, after you spent the money on the expensive bucket which doesn't do ANYTHING better than the bucket you get for free when you spawn in. The Game Designer really must be a maniac. - The motion and visuals of the water is stunning, and the best part of the game, otherwise this is another empty shell of a game, where you "make up you're own fun." - With nothing else but grind..... but go ahead, go have "fun". This is such a game of missed opportunity. Big let down. Feels like NMS all over again.… Expand

    In summary, 5/10 - Okay but could be better. The game has potential but feels like an early access game. So for the price 92$(Can), it's overpriced... You can get refund if you played less than 2hours. One of my friends did. I should have but oh well...    … Expand

    Unfinished game with no long time Motivation because the quests are always the same kind of quests. Only the oceans, waves and light effects during the day/night/weather is well made. Fun to Play with friends for a few hours but not worth the Price.

    PVP is just a joke and epic fail!

    Sea of Emptiness is the prime example of a polished turd. This game actually has less content than No Mans Sky on launch day. They envisioned a type of multiplayer game where players would create ''experiences that are entertaining to watch" and I don't doubt that it'll be a big hit on twitch or youtube but people are going to see how much fun others are having and are going to buy it think that they will also have fun only to be horribly disappointed.

    Cons:
    -There is no character creation, just a randomized roulette wheel.
    -There is no lore or story.
    -NPCs are boring and say nothing that's of any interest.
    -The games three factions offer only simple fetch quests with no reward except gold.
    -The only progression is ranking up in one of three factions, doing so will reward you in fetch quests with more steps which might give you a little more gold than starting quests.
    -Gold is mainly used to purchase cosmetics.
    -Cosmetics offer nothing except a change in appearance. And because there is nothing but cosmetics a person that has played the game for 1 minute is no different than a person that's played it for 300 hours.
    -The only enemy you have excluding other players are skeletons (snakes don't count as you can just walk around them) that offer as much challenge as Minecraft PvE. Walk backward and shoot,
    -Enemies drop nothing and seem to only get in your way.
    - PvP is a thing but since there is no reward for killing other players there's no point. No k/d, no score, nothing.
    -Islands are practically empty. No environmental hazards of any kind.
    -When sailing the only hazards you have are a storm that you can easily avoid.
    -A shark spawns to discourage you from being in the water too long. It's a game that's 90% water, why?
    -There are no penalties for anything. You can die all you want, lose your ship, kill other players and nothing bad will happen.
    -Crews are limited to 4 people. This can be an issue when using the galleon which requires a minimum of 6.

    Pros:
    -It looks nice.

    To ask a person to pay $60 (a price which no game should ever be worth and we should never have been okay with) for basically nothing is insulting to say the very least. It's degrading, derogatory, disrespectful, offensive, repulsive, and rude.

    I already know how this is going to work because I've seen these scum sucking tactics before. They release this empty game and then over the years add the rest of it piece by piece, only they've wrapped it up as extra content, and then charge people $20 or $30.

    I've spent a lot of time playing this game now, and at this stage, I just don't see how I can keep playing.
    It's fun in the beginning for sure, and having a crew of 4 friends can entertain you for a couple of days of playtime, but after doing the same thing over and over, you start to realize there is nothing more.
    The game has basically zero content. It's a sandbox, and it's a barren    I've spent a lot of time playing this game now, and at this stage, I just don't see how I can keep playing.
    It's fun in the beginning for sure, and having a crew of 4 friends can entertain you for a couple of days of playtime, but after doing the same thing over and over, you start to realize there is nothing more.

    The game has basically zero content. It's a sandbox, and it's a barren wasteland of a sandbox.
    - The world is empty. Other than generic skeletons, and the same npcs that give you fetch quests in every port, there is nothing in the entire world other than yourself, and some sharks.

    - The quests are super-generic fetch quests. There are no storyline quests, there is no interaction, and there is no variety.
    After you've done quests for a couple of hours, you've seen all there is to see. For the remainder of your playtime, the quests will now be complete carbon copies.

    - PVP is the only ray of light in this entire experience, but if you're a crew of 1-2, expect to be completely ganked by 4-man crews over and over and over. If you're a 4-man crew, expect to gank smaller ships, which will give you basically nothing, as no one ever carries any treasure, and the sinking of the ship gives you no extras.

    - There is no progress in this game. What you start with on day 1, is the same you will have on day 3000 as it stands now.
    You do not gain experience or levels, you can't buy better equipment, ships, or anything to better yourself with. The only thing you do is to deliver fetch quests, which gives you gold and standing with the different factions, and this again makes you able to only buy cosmetic items, nothing other than cosmetic items.

    This is a full release from a big company, for a AAA price tag. For your money, you get something more akin to an early release game from an indie company.

    The game has huge potential, and the fun we were having in the beginning is a sign of what would've been possible with this game.
    I would've loved to have seen storyline quests, more interactive and engaging NPC enemies. A more vibrant world of discovery and adventure, and something that makes you feel like your character, ship and equipment is progressing and becoming better.

    However, what we are left with, is a game that has the depth of a puddle. A barren sandbox sea, with no interactions other than the ones you can make yourself with other players. Generic and boring quests, and no character or equipment progression.

    This is most certainly not worth the price tag, and I would not recommend anyone to buy this, other than the 14-day free trial from the xbox game pass.

    Maybe they will continue development, and maybe it will be a good game in the future. That's a possibility, but this is a full AAA release with a AAA price tag from a big game company, and the complete lack of content just can't be excused.    … Expand

Instead, you are put in to a beautiful world just to sail in circles for hours repeating the same chore over and over. In a couple of weeks, you may never even see other boats. I can think of many other better ways to waste time as a pirate, but this game will never be one as it hasGreat concept with an empty shell of a game. I didn't realize until I played it just how unfinished it was. The suggestion threads for this game are the ultimate in beating a dead horse: there's so    This isn't a game.     This game has potential although it falls short on so many levels =( Single player is brutal.. if you come head to head with a boat of more than 1 people you are basically screwed or you have to escape. Just tried playing for 2hours single player mode and got 0 quests done due to ppl attacking my boat when I was on shore. The clothing choices are also very lame and non-imaginable. The funny thing is your only reward from progression are those lame only for look items.. The sea graphics are the most beautiful I've seen but sailing long trips is still quite boring as there is not much to do on the boat if more than 1 players are in it.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel like most of the reviews are extremely unfair for this game, so thought i'd write my own one. Sea of Thieves is a wonderful game, been spending hours since the realease with a few friends. The pvp is engaging and a real adrenaline rush. Raids in the game are amazing the beacon luring all the players into one spot, then later sinking all the ships coming for you and then delivering houndreds of thousands worth of gold to the merchants is a real kicker. Game is only repetetive if you go for a "side quest" at the time and then deliver it. Engage yourself into the world fight for loot there are people sailing around all over the place but most will avoid you cause they're scared of losing their loot. I havent had a calm moment in the game, always fighting someone be it 2v4, 2v4v4 or even more it's always fun to come out on top if you play it right. Sailing and shooting in the game feels great as well, that is coming from a person that tops out on most fps's and competetive games.

    My negatives for the game would be that as a PC player i am stuck with xbox live app and it's not a great interface, very buggy and horrible UI and as for the price tag? no it's not worth 60€ maybe a 50€, playing on the game pass thankfully will most likely pay the full price they ask for if they live up to the promise of fair microtransactions and NO loot boxes.

If you have some mates to bring along, your experience will be better, but there’s plenty of adventure to haveThis game is more than the sum of its parts.     The game is a 9/10. If it were on steam, it'd be a 10. Xbox app is awful, but it only takes away form the game a tad bit. The interface, and menus are equally bad. But the game is stellar. Its been a long time since I've had so much fun with friends playing an online game.

    The Game is beautiful and has a great setting. The Co-op, Crew vs. Crew PVP makes fun. There are a few Quest: 1. Search and dig for treasure 2. Search an Kill Skeleton 3. Search and catch Animals 4. Delivery.

    There is no progression, no skills, no XP, no character sheet, your Char is as is you can "get better" beside your Mouse/Keyboard/Gamepad Skills! The Game is made for Gamepads, the Controls for Keyboard and Mouse are inconvenient and stupid! There is no Persistence, despite the cosmetic items for wardrobe, weapon skins, ship skins.    … Expand

    This is an Early Access game being sold for $60. If you're considering it, get the free 14 day Game Pass trial to check it out that way first. There just isn't enough content. It's polished by very shallow and it gets boring really fast.

    What the Rare forgot to include in this equation is variety. The 3 factions you work for are just a paint coated fetch quests. The games progression is working your way through better tiers of dress up and hoarding your gold.

    Of course also being a game about being pirates you have the option of pirating other players stuff. While this is fun and seems great on paper, there is no long term penalty for being "too aggressive" so a lot of players are inclined to play this route and grief as opposed to following the games intended path. I think if Rare was to implement a karma style system or something that added bounties to excessively aggressive players, this could balance out.

    With all that being said, the game really is a fun sandbox to play in. Sandbox being the key word there. You really need to be able to find your own fun to really enjoy this title. There is almost no hand holding and almost no one telling you that you are doing a good job. It's up to you to feel like you are.    … Expand

    I have seen so many negative reviews that take quite a petty stance, some people marking it down for using XBox live, others giving it a low score because it 'only has cosmetic progression', and likewise I've seen some reviews who are clearly looking at it through rose tinted glasses - I'll try and be as objective as possible, and you'll find more thoughts on my YouTube channel as i look to cover this off more thoroughly.

    Who will this game suit?

    I would definitely say that this game will naturally favour individuals who have 'busy minds and vast imaginations', and those who enjoy not having to pay real money for cosmetics and who like to feel the sense of achievement in unlocking things through hard work.

    I have to say I am surprised at the amount of negative comments in relation to solo mode, and I believe most of those comments are from players who lack imagination, lack skill or who are just slower to pick things up in general.

    Obviously the game can reach fun peaks at a higher level when you do have a group of friends to play with, because you'll find your failures just as entertaining and your successes and can fool around with music, firing each other from cannons, getting into battles or coming across rival groups.

    Yes the game lacks a lot of content that we know will be added gradually, and i do feel for those who paid the full price for it rather than go down the game pass route as i did, but my intuition definitely tells me that Rare will be looking after this game - they realise it's potential, as do (i truly believe) the majority of players and critics who've reviewed this game. They can just how brilliant this game can be, but they don't want to wait for it to get there (and for those who pay in full, are well within their rights to feel that way).

    Yes it's true that the game is predominantly made up of different type of fetch quests at this stage (like an eternal Thieves Guild run in Skyrim), but there are random events you can come across (ship wrecks, floating barrels, messages in bottles etc), and there is of course the biggest adrenaline generator the game......the fact that you never know when you might be attacked and how the battle may unfold if you actually are.

    I. Love. This. For me this is the key to the game not losing it's appeal and me not losing my desire to play.

    Do i want to purchase a full set of a certain line of clothing? Yes.
    Will it cost me a lot of gold and involve a lot of grind? Yes.
    Will it involve doing the same thing over and over again? Yes....wait no....maybe?? Who knows!?!?

    I've been involved in some great runs where we sell many a chest and skull for much gold, completely unchallenged, I've been involved in other journeys where we're sunk or robbed on the way to returning our gear....hell I've even been attacked AS i'm selling something at an outpost..completely out of the blue, and this is what makes the game great.

    One evening i decided I was going to play solo and be as friendly as possible. Met some really nice other solo players who i had a tankard of grog with or played music and danced with...met others who decided they really weren't open for comms and would rather shoot first and talk later (over their mics as they taunt me for my death). I've really enjoyed the open seas, the scenery, catching animals etc.

    In its current guise, this game is really as good as the mind of the person playing it. It is what you make of it - have those leaving bad reviews come to expect the world from games instantly with an over inflated sense of entitlement? Have those leaving 10/10 reviews set their expectations too low? Maybe.

    I was born in 1986, i grew up playing games where you'd have to put hours in to them to unlock cosmetic items anyway. You couldn't nip off to the nearest shop to spend real money and skip out all those hours. You couldn't buy loot crates either - it was a grind, and to be honest i think if it ever gets to the point when games have no grind, I'll bow out of gaming.

    I like to feel as though I have earned what i have, and this game is no different. it can be brutal, it can be unforgiving, it can even feel like it's trolling you at times...but the sense of achievement you get when completing missions, or when you win a battle or steal treasure etc is great.

    I really look forward to seeing what this game brings over the next year or so and in each release because i have very high hopes for it.

    Give it a chance and you'll see what i mean, just don't expect the world...yet!    … Expand

However, this is pretty much it, there are shipwrecks, and forts, and of course the Kraken (which is very rare to find). But other than that, there is nothing much else to the game besides the PVP.

    However, even with this lack of content.....It's fun, I don't know what it is, but I'm having so much fun with the game and even when playing solo. The combat, in my opinion, is fun to do. The PVP just flows, I've been able to queue up with random people and we had genuine fun with it. Sea of Thieves is confusing, it is severely lacking in content, but I enjoy it so much. I hope that Rare sticks to their guns (or cannons I guess) and keep adding content to the game.    … Expand

Indeed, all you can do is make your own stories with your mates, but without the framework of content it gets old very, very quickly. Yes, an open world sandbox is great in theory, but even GTA etc. understand that you can't just create a toy box and not put toys in the thing to play with!

    You're done inside 30 minutes, an hour or two max. I'm not joking. I wish I was, I really do, because this is one of those dream concepts in gaming - live like a pirate, swing a lightsaber, fly a ship in open space and explore etc. Unfortunately, just like No Man's Sky, Sea of Thieves has absolutely no idea how to make that dream a reality.

    I'm already hoping they take this as the proof of concept of a sequel that could be utterly phenomenal if done right. But the consumer shouldn't be paying full price for a proof of concept, and as it stands the player base is going to fall sharply and make this game totally worthless, even moreso than it is now at its' peak.

    There are 3 factions and each one gives you fetch quests to go and get something to bring back to them. Each time you do it you will get a faction number to rise which unlocks a cosmetic, exclusive to that faction while getting some gold. You then use the gold to buy skins for your character(that you don’t get to create), your weapons and ship. That’s it. There’s no story, there’s no other quest elements. All of the gear is cosmetic and plays the same as what you start out with. There are chests worth more and some do stuff like fill up your boat randomly with water if it’s a cursed chest.

    Overall it feels like a game still in beta and maybe one that was gonna use the loot box algorithm. I’m really disappointed in Rare & for the millionth time this gen, Microsoft. It’s not worth $60 and I felt like the $35 I put into it was too much also. I’d have paid maybe $15 for it, if anything honestly.

    This is very much the “Destiny” of pirate games and what I mean by that is another sixty dollar title has little content, a very buggy launch and is very repetitive. It is far worse in that sense than Destiny, but so people know where im coming from that is what I mean. I don't see this making it very far even with some changes due to the slew of games coming out this year, including what looks like a more ambitious pirate themed video game.    … Expand

    Sea of Thieves, the game I have been waiting for, for a pretty long time.
    It's a beautiful game which is very different then other games you might have played and even though the content in it now is a bit shallow, the developers are working on monthly+/- updates and are very open about all the process they are going through and sharing that with the players.

    Sit back relax and just let the sea sink you in. This game is not about the rewards, it's about the adventure you had to get to it. Also it has been out for 2 days don't bash it so much because overall it is doing a really good job as an mmo.    … Expand

    Truly Beautiful graphics with stunning gameplay and mechanics but really lacks any direction / content to do after repeating yourself with one of in game quests to do. Such a shame...

    If you want good Loot you are forced to do PVP on a little "Dungeon Isle". If you dont do that you have to grind for hours and hours doing the same Quest over and over again and thats realy boring. Played the Game für like 10h and did not enjoy it at all (maybe 2-3 laughs). Dont by it if you just want to sail a bit casualy, there is not much conent and you get killed a lot.

Getting treasure for the umpteenth time is about as rewarding as a happy meal toy. Rolling dice in Risk is more exciting than the combat.     Mediocrity at best. People giving 10/ 10 r just corporate slaves trying to raise the user score. There is way too little content to justify 50 uk pounds. It gets boring very fast. Rare took 5 years to make this? I think the game should have been 20 pound.

    As a longtime fan of Rare's titles I was hoping that this would be their return to glory, in an epic sea fearing swashbuckling adventure. Not to mention various bugs I've experienced from my items disappearing to my money suddenly disappearing to not even being able to play the game due to server issues.

    As others have said, the game is gorgeous. It has BEAUTIFUL water mechanics and the sailing is solid. That being said...the combat is clunky and downright unfun, there's very few npc enemy types, there are three types of fetch quest missions that are basically just rinse and repeat, and there is literally no character progression outside of these missions either.     Ignore the fanboys screaming "BLEH IT'S NOT ON MY CONSOLE" and "BLEH IT'S ONE OF MY HANDFUL OF EXCLUSIVES SO IT'S GOOD". The content to price tag ratio is insanely off on this one. I've easily gotten more game for $20 from much smaller devs on Steam. Shame on Microsoft for pushing this so hard. It's basically launch day No Man's Sky on water with fetch quests and 4-man co-op. If content isn't added, and soon, it'll be dead in the water in a matter of months.    … Expand

    Sea of Thieves is a great technical demo for a ship sailing game that could have been. It looks fantastic and the base model is good, but beyond that it falls very short. Essentially all the game has to offer will be done by about hour 5, 10 or so hours and you've experienced the nuts and bolts of the entire game.

    To me it feels like a F2P or $20 game that was supposed to have content packs, quests, add-ons, story line unlocks, and other things you paid for over time. Instead they went with the full price route and it falls short in almost every aspect of actual gameplay. It looks good, the base of it is fun, but all the "story" and progress is just repetitive quests that are nearly identical with a few hard bosses (paired with boring combat) sprinkled in between.

    In two years, this game might be fantastic. Its minimalist design and learn as you go sandbox feeling have a lot of potential. As of right now, you wake up in a bar with no tutorial and realize it's because if the game had one it would be more compelling than any story or faction it has to offer.

    In a Game thats all about pirates and ships, you have 4 weapons, 2 ships and 3 Items (Bananas, Canonballs, Woodplanks) Thats all. The whole progression is based around looting chests and selling them for gold, which you can spend on cosmetic items. Thats the entire mechanic of this game.
    For newcomers this game offers no tutorial or hints whatsoever, you get thrown into it without any idea how the gameplay mechanics are supposed to work (how to get contracts, how to finish them etc.). Therefore, if you want to learn the game, you have to read through various reddit posts just to understand the whole gameplay loop.
    Then the game is terribly flawed by several bugs. You lose your gold when you restart the game, contracts just dont give gold when finished, weapons not showing, gamecrashes etc.
    This game should be an early access title with a $15 pricetag, but its a buggy mess with zero content for 70 f*cking Bucks.

    Of course, you might be having fun with it when playing with Friends. But everything is fun with the right people, even smashing bricks in your face does.    … Expand

While the content does have a chance to get repetitive (fetch quests), the real game shines through when you can take the time to create your own fun with the game and use your imagination/creativity with players, both friends and randos.     Rare is back!! What an amazing game!!! One of th ebest coop games to play with friends, seriously amazing time with buds!

    Amazing art work, great graphics, fun gameplay and tons to do = Rare is back! This is a very special game and a game that the gaming industry badly needed.

It's a open world sandbox where you can do whatever you want without having a specific end goal except for the legendary pirate title and perks that goes with it.     I like this game so much. It has a great atmosphere, a lot things to do, many customization settings and combat. I highly recommend it to play with at least one friends because it's easier to attack other players. Game has nice art style and great setting with beautiful sea.     Sea of Thieves has successfully redeemed its clumsy launch with Rare being a developer that fully commits to the title with monthly updates for more than two years. Now – it is a game brimming with content, adventure and gorgeous pirate atmosphere with arguably being the best pirate game available and a truly fun multiplayer experience.

    A year of updates has helped fill out its light content, but the real magic was there from the start. Rare’s take on cartoon piracy encourages you to behave as a cartoon pirate should: a little bloodthirsty, a little silly, and almost always drunk.
