OK, so it just came out on steam so people are probably looking for reviews. A LOT has changed since 2018 like A LOT. First monthly major updates get the community going a lot tons of quests voyages and story-based adventures. Its best played with 2-4 friends as it can be hard soloing.

Sea of Thieves is marketed as a "Make Your Own Adventure" type of game. After playing it for a few weeks off a trial on GamePass, I've gotten to admire the gorgeous seas, the insanity of friends screwing up certain situations, and then the bitter realization of knowing that I had experienced every type of quest only 3 days in.

The competition for game makers these days is immense, not only are you going up against massive free-to-play giants both on phones and PC, but also with other games-as-a-service platforms like GTA Online, Destiny, and even No Mans Sky. So the most important thing to do is to make your game stick out, make it fun, make it visually appealing. Sea of Thieves definitely has the look and the idea down, but the gameplay simply is dull and samey.

You start out choosing from a pre-made selection of pirates to make as your avatar, it doesn't matter if you don't get one you like, as you will quickly discover that cosmetics and alterations are the only thing you can purchase in this game. Once you start your first quest, you're plunged right in to the sailing mechanics of the game. My group started and immediately got into a terrible storm, setting the ship on fire and striking multiple of us with lightning. At the time, it was extremely stressful and funny, we were laughing crazy hard. And it was a great introduction to the zaniness the game can bring out. We started doing a handful of different missions, including digging, bounties, rhymes, and a fruit crate.

But slowly, you start to notice that those missions are it. If you've done one digging mission you've done all of them. Find the X, dig it up, optionally fight skeletons with the god-awful combat system (we'll come back to this), and sell the loot for gold or doubloons. As a matter of fact, that's the only thing you can do with ANY of the quests in this game, it's only good for gold. But hey, currency is important in these games right? In GTA Online there are endless things to buy, from haircuts, clothing, cars, guns, bases, and even your own business. In Sea of Thieves? There's cosmetics, and not really a ton of them for being a 2 year old game. No upgrades, no side-grades, just cosmetics. Rare has opted for a "horizontal progress" approach which basically means skill is the only thing that improves in the game. But, honestly? This is a hard sell on a full-price game. You have to be so sure that your game is fun to play even without rewards to sell it this way. And Sea of Thieves just isn't.

Even going past the lack of content, even 2 years in, the other big element of sea of thieves is combat, and it
    just

    isn't

    fun.

The hand-to-hand combat with sword and gun is just awful. There's no way to skirt around it. Your sword has a slow floaty animation of 3 swings and a charge up shot, that's it. And you have a few selections of guns to choose from which are all single-shot flintlocks which need to reload between each shot. While this makes sense in a pirate setting, it doesn't make sense in terms of the gameplay. The combat, while being extremely slow, has dire consequences. PVP feels floaty and weightless yet you can die in 3 seconds flat. It's terrible, and I don't know how Rare hasn't completely revamped it by this point.

The naval combat actually shines from time to time, as it's the main gimmick of the game. Sinking other players ships is where I got most of my fun during my playtime. You have a variety of cannonballs to choose from each with their own strength or player-effect, with the endgoal of waterlogging the enemy ship enough to get it to sink. While this was extremely satisfying the first few times around, ship combat became tedious, overlylong, and pointless since there's only gold as a reward, which as stated previously, can only be used on cosmetics. And if it is YOU getting sunk, I hope you like spawn camping! You spawn in the exact same location every time after your respawn timer finishes and you can bet the enemy will be waiting for you to cause death again. This is such an embarrassing oversight, how did Rare not catch this? On top of this there's no real risk to open-firing on someone as there isn't really a punishment for dying OR griefing. There's no punishment for enemy ships repeatedly picking fights with others and no way to opt out. Doesn't make a lot of sense.

It got to the point where I really just wanted to do story missions to get the most out of my trial, but I repeatedly ran into events, griefing ships picking a fight with us and making us lose our progress, or some bug either crashing or halting progress that just made me want to quit. To top all of this off, we're still encountering situation where quests aren't getting triggered or stacks of events are happening to us, such as a kracken encounter and a ghost ship right next to each other.

So honestly? Why bother. When the core gameplay loop isn't fun, why invest any more time into anything else?

Sea of Thieves had a rocky launch with barley any content. But in it's current state it's well worth the $50 it costs in Canada. If you get it with Xbox Gamepass it's well worth it aswell. It's done a No Mans Sky like 180 and I 100% recommend it.

Because of how boring everything in this game is, most people do only one thing thats not repetetive: sinking other players. And while it's cool to have PvP, it's not when you get no chance to do anything because theres hordes of pirate legends ready to chase you to the edge of the map. What, you think it is unfair to go 1v4 against a much much stronger ship? Noo, why would that be?
I really have no words for this, there are so many possibilities how this couldve been done better, it is simply sad.

My next problems have nothing to do with the gameplay, but the devs decisions. The servers are usually pretty empty, which makes it hard to find other players. Similar to No Man's Sky, they should have waited a long time before releasing the game, because at first it wasn't completed which I think is what caused the low player count. Those are really my only problems with the game. I cannot describe how fun ship combat is. Patching holes, firing cannons, boarding enemy ships, all of it is awesome fun. Ship combat is at another level in arena mode, where combat is most common. Treasure maps are exciting, and skeleton forts are extremely fun. The sort of campaign, or tall tales, is extremely fun too. Overall, a pretty fun game. Expand

If you can get past the cosmetic only progression system and monotonous quests there will always be another player right around the corner to sink your ship and wipe away any work you've put towards the game that night. If anything this game is great at being a griefers playground; people will kill and spawn camp you for no other reason other than they can.

If you have to play this game, the only good thing I can say about it, is that the "story" quests are very well designed and are genuinely fun to solve their complicated puzzles. However they usually take a couple hours to finish, and any blood thirsty player can come along and kill you, take your quest items, and force you to restart the entire quest.

If visuals were what you could base the entire game on then it would be great. Sunset to sunrise the game looks great.
However, the most important thing is the gameplay, which is honestly awful. Here's a quick way to sum it up. You grind for sometimes hours looking for treasures across various islands constantly interrupted by never ending hoards of skeleton warriors. If it was a few set waves or certain spawn locations, then ok. But no, it seems every 20 feet you run in any direction another 4 or 5 spawn. If you stop, they surround you. If you try to outrun them more just spawn in front of you and now you have 10 of them. Did I mention you can only swing your sword like every 2 seconds and only have 5 bullets before having to go back to the ship to reload? Did I mention half of them have guns and exploding barrels. Did I mention they NEVER.... STOP... SPAWNING? It goes from being a fun challenge, to annoying, to just downright ridiculous and you wonder why you are still playing.
But the worst part about the gameplay is once you spend all the time getting these treasures, there are going to be troll players who do nothing but wait for people to get these treasures and overrun your ship and steal it all. And then sail into port, while spawn killing you, and get all of the game currency for all of the work you put into it. I don't care if it's a "pirate" game, this is the stupidest, worst game design I've ever seen. There goes the two hours you just spent hopping from island to island, you're getting absolutely nothing for it and those other guys are. "Fun"?
If this kind of nonsense sounds fun to you then go waste your money on it. I wish I could get mine back.

I also never played alone, so I don't really have a view of that part of the game, although I'd surmise that it's probably just as empty as the rest of the game. This game came out about a year ago to the day, and from reading other reviews it has not progressed much since then.

This game honestly feels like an early access game. If it was, I'd have to say it's a pretty decent early access game. The fact is, however, that this is a fully released game. It sure looks like one too, as this is one of the best looking games I've ever played. The style is fantastic, and the sound really adds to the atmosphere which for the first few hours makes the game incredibly immersive. Your first time fighting (or more accurately running from) a Kraken or Megalodon will be an unforgettable experience.

This is where the issues begin. The gameplay, while passable, becomes incredibly repetitive after only a short period of time. When I first began with my friends, it was awesome setting sail and having no clue what we were doing, trying to find our own adventure. Problem is, that adventure doesn't exist. You'll find yourself being more of a delivery boy than a pirate, with insanely generic voyages that are only fun for the first or second time. The Reaper voyages add a little, but really just become a vehicle for more grinding.

Some voyages along with general 'exploration' will end up in ship to ship combat. As with most things in this game, the first time is incredible. But once you've done a couple fights, you've pretty much seen all this combat has to offer. The PVP can freshen this up a bit, but ultimately it still feels one-dimensional. Furthermore, there doesn't really seem to be much reason to engage in PVP beyond doing it for the fun of it. You can fight on land as well, but this is still lackluster, as you'll pretty much only be fighting a couple types of skeletons by playing sword-tag or headshotting. There are only 4 types of weapons; sword, pistol, blunderbuss, and rifle. These weapons can never be upgraded and only undergo cosmetic changes to my knowledge.

All in all, this game has the potential to be amazing, but after a year I find it unlikely that the game will ever reach this potential. As it is, it's a game worth a couple hours of fun with friends for some laughs. I'd recommend getting the game pass with a couple friends to enjoy that first bit. Beyond that, it's an average experience, not really worth its $60 price tag (ouch).

P.S. Character creation is NOT GOOD.

And people are thrilled by the devs still updating the game with "great features"? What features? Vulcanics islands? Which are nothing but normal islands but with magma. A cracken, new megs and a skeleton ships that will randomly spawn? Wow, gamers today can really have so much fun and be okay with shady developers. They could've put so much stuff in 1 year of updates, like REAL quests, a story maybe, even a background story(because there is no lore), maybe add some interesting places to visit like pve island where people can met other players and have a drink or i don't know(the cartoonish childish artstyle doesn't help the pirate context).
Just buy gmod for 1 dollar and play the pirate mode, if that's not enough go and play ac 4 black flag.

Even just braving a thunderstorm to see the sunset on the other side, it's truly a reward. Falling into the water was absolutely terrifying, but then I looked up, and seeing those waves crashing over head is one of the most surreal experiences I've ever had. The gameplay loop isn't the most rewarding thing ever since everything is cosmetic, but I really enjoy the fact that armor and weapons don't affect gameplay, only strategy and skill (I'm terrible btw). I had a group of friends which I think would make a huge difference. I think, if you like the idea of bonding with your friends while having some of the most surreal experiences in gaming, then I think you should give this another try. I haven't tried everything yet, but I'm comfortable giving this game a high score from the amount I've played. The reason for the missing point, is that the gameplay loop is somewhat shallow. Expand

You want to chill and dig up some chests, kill some skelletons ? You can do it, but you should expect some dangers, like an another crew who wants to sink you to get your booty. Maybe the Kraken will put his/her tentacles around your ship, seeking for blood and broken wood. Or, some huge shark teeth will break through your deck, the Megalodon is always lurking from the depths. Seeing a skelleton ship rising from under the seas, shooting sparkling cursed canon balls at you while you're peacefully going back to sell your loot can be surprising too. And every time, it's your choice, it's your way to deal with those, run away or fight back.

Now that the skelletons forts/stronghold are up a lot more often (as well as the Skelleton ships fights), you can be involved into a lot more PvP fights aswell, making allliances, fighting to death, the choice is yours !

I'm just talking about what happens in the game, but the technical aspects of Sea of Thieves are trully stunning. The sound design is perfect, it shows the perfect atmorsphere and at the same time gives your every informations you need to understand what's happening around you (A gunpowder barrel getting lit, a hole into your hull, ropes being pulled, anchor being droped, skelleton ship rising from the depths, the last wave of the fort spawned, and so on...).
The graphic aspect is up to your personnal feeling of course, but the cartoonish style can be colorful into the Shores of plenty or depressing into the Wilds, dangerous into the Devil's Roar... And oh my god, the water is just ridiculously beautiful and makes sailing a pure pleasure.

I can go on for years about this game, I found into Sea of Thieves something i've lost during my gamer life, pure gaming pleasure ! Playing for the sake's of fun, into a world full of possibilities and danger, that can be sometimes frustrating but always rewarding.

I've learnt something with Sea of Thieves, it's that you don't need to be an absolute content seeker to find pleasure as a gamer !

Trust me, if you want to experience a unique game in a beautiful world with plenty of things to do, specially with friends, you should just dive into this magnificent ocean of possibilities and meet pirates from all around the globe.

I have came back to this game today and noticed that there is still nothing new. apparently you get something special when you get to level 50 on every alliance but the game keeps making you feel like your about to get something after 5 levels and I feel like you would have to play this repetitive early access for weeks counting to get to level 50. One person I knew had 60 000 gold because he was saving up for ship parts and then the next day he was back to zero and was not able to get his gold back, not only did he lose that but he also lost all of his apparel. Sailing is as smooth as butter, the water and art in general in this game is absolutely gorgeous, and there is something so inherently relaxing about just sailing around on the beautiful sea in this game. For all those reasons, that's why I give this game an 8.

It does have its cons however, and the glaring one is a huge lack of content. Unlike a lot of players, I actually don't mind voyages, it's something to do while looking for the next bout of trouble with other ships (or perhaps becoming friends and drinking Grogg together). That being said, the fact that voyages is essentially the only thing to do aside from skull forts (which spawn roughly every 3 hours) is troubling and a glaring problem with the game. If the Devs didn't have plans for a bunch of content updates, I would give this game a 6 instead of an 8 because of the lack of content.

That being said, Rare has been very transparent about plans for the games, updates and listening to their community. I fully have faith that this game will have a lot more to do exactly a year from now, with 3 medium to big content updates already announced and planned (The Hungering Deep coming out soon).

If I had to give a recommendation for this game, I'd tell you that if it looks and sounds appealing to you, give it a try with Xbox Gamepass. This is the kind of game that, if you enjoy, you will want to be with it for the long haul to see how development pans out. If you know you would get bored from fighting other ships, stealing, making funny alliances, and doing skull forts and voyages, then skip this until it hits a sale. Personally, it's one of my favorite games, but I can see why it turns people off 100%.

At its current state the game heavily lacks in the three core elements which i believe to be valuable in games like sea of thieves, Progression, Quests (Voyages), and loot. Despite it covering these three categories it stumbles in diversity; with loot being gold every time you cash in whatever items you find and having no real presents to game play since gold is only used to buy cosmetics voyages which are just three run of the mill fetch quests either having you kill things look for treasure or look for animals in which (as stated before) is used to cash in for gold to buy cosmetics. Even though the game does have some cool looking skins knowing that they don't do anything except make your guy look a little cooler is just discouraging to the player. The game in the long run is just sailing to and from island to outpost to make more gold to buy more skins which doesn't reflect a players skill but just how much time they have on there hands. Despite having a promising first few hours with breath taking scenery, amazing water effects, and great ship mechanics it just doesn't deliver in a fun repetitive grind to become so-called pirate legend with missions being tedious and sometimes out right frustrating for especially people who play solo. The occasional fort is fun but it falls under the same problem with loot just being items to turn in for money in turn being used to by skins. With decent game play and astounding visuals the game falters in content and progression.

I haven't had this much fun in a game in a very long time. I understand that I'm going against the grain by saying this, but I find the constant rehashing of first person shooters to be not much more than money grabs for large studios that produce the same games over and over again. The Call of Duties of the gaming world are obviously here to stay for the near future, but when a game like Sea of Thieves comes out it really feels like there is hope for interesting games on the horizon. When I first got into the game and realized there were not any HUD nav points telling me where to go or what to do, I was kind of blown away and I realized maybe that what I had just gotten into was something fresh.

One thing I can definitely see as something that might be a negative for people is if you are trying to play the game alone, or maybe with just random matchmaking and aren't really getting an experience. Having friends to play with of a like mind goes a long way with this one. I love how there are long periods of maybe no human encounters at all, just sailing and acquiring loot in a way that actually challenges your real world skills like cardinal directions and reading a map, solving little riddles here and there, etc. It really brings gaming back to fond memories of playing things like Myst or Goblins, but from a completely fresh perspective that you can share with your friends. When you do have an encounter (or maybe several) a successful raid on another crew is extremely rewarding. When you actually pull one over on someone else and steal some or all of their loot, it is a fantastic accomplishment. Of course, you are just as much a target as they are and if you tend to get upset by PvP and are someone who cries about fairness etc., this game might not be for you. However, if you can get over it and just move on and then go pillage someone else, the personal accomplishment and internal reward is great especially when sharing in the victory with your friends.

The fact that everything in the game is "physical" is great. You show your status, by the items you buy from selling your plunders. When you see a pirate all decked out in awesome gear, you know that they have some experience, but it's still a level playing field. All of the mechanics are just "make sense" type systems, like having to bail out water from your ship while repairing the hull, or needing to set the sails correctly to catch the wind. This is the kind of game that expects it's players to be half way intelligent. I feel like the world in general should start expecting a little more intelligence and this is a great start. A kid playing this game will learn how to read maps and understand cardinal directions in a fun way. I have probably close to 36 hours now into SoT and couldn't be happier. I also think that some of the people who say it is a wash, rinse, repeat experience must not have played for very long. The longer I've played the more there is to uncover. I probably played for 12 hours before ever seeing the Kraken, I still haven't gotten to a skull fort type quest, but know they exist from reading forums, etc. Sometimes I find a new type of loot item I haven't seen before like the "Chest of 1000 Grogs".

Ultimately, the game is fantastic if you want to create an experience with your friends. One thing I find amazing is that I remember actual excerpts of game play that my crew experienced over others. When you play many online games, it seems that every match is just another un-note worthy experience that you don't distinguish from the last or the next. Sea of Thieves has a substance that can only be described as character enough to demand creativity from its players. The greatest part of all is that Rare thinks we are smart enough to handle it!

    XCom Enemy Unknown
    Kerbal Space Program
    Most Bethesda Titles
    Prison Architect
    Minecraft
    Witcher 3

    --

Pirate games are relatively few and far between, so when I first started hearing about Sea of Thieves I was pretty excited; the overall concept sounded amazing, and it was being built by a solid company.

When it finally released, I picked it up with a couple of friends and set sail to pirate it up - and what we found was a game that, had it been called a beta or pre-release and priced at $20-30, was a beautiful start to a game.

But it wasn't a beta. It was supposedly a full release game, and cost as much as any other AAA title out there.

In short, the game suffers from a lack of content. Here's a rundown of what you can do in-game:

-Get a quest from one of the three factions, sail to one or more islands, and do one of three things: Dig up a chest or chests; cage livestock of the proper 'colors'; or fight a couple of waves of skeletons, kill the captain, and take his skull; then sail back to port and deliver/sell the items
-Engage in ocean-based PvP battles that are generally limited to firing cannon, ramming, and boarding to fight with the limited melee and pistol moves
-Find the occasional random chest, skull, or item and take it to the proper faction to sell it
-Find the occasional "message in a bottle", which will send you on a treasure hunt identical to Hoarders' quests
-Come across a shipwreck and risk drowning as you collect - you got it! - more stuff to sell
-Sail to a randomly-spawning "skeleton fort", fight waves of a few different types of skeletons, open the vault, and take the stuff back to sell
-Earn rep for each of the three factions to unlock slight variations of their quests or 'special' skins for your weapons and clothes
-Buy purely cosmetic upgrades to your weapons, clothes, and ship
-Sail off the edge of the map
-Occasionally get attacked by a kraken that you can kill for an achievement and nothing else

That's a lot to do, right?1 Not really.

There are 3 minor variations of fetch quests, random spawns that grant or lead to the same loot you get from fetch quests, forts where you fight a couple of enemy variants to get the same loot you get from the quests, or get ambushed by giant tentacles that you can kill for no tangible purpose. Oh, and PvP (which seems to happen infrequently due to how world instances are populated, and which seems to happen when it's most inconvenient).

    That's the whole experience.

Even the occasional 'special' chest - like the Chest of Grog, which makes you drunk while you carry it, or the Chest of Sorrows, which cries while you're sailing and will sink your ship if you aren't paying attention - is just a slight variation of the only real non-PvE thing you can do in the game, which is fetch quests and more fetch quests.

There are no classes or leveling. Each pirate has the same set of skills, which boils down to sailing the ship, doing two types of attacks with a cutlass, and shooting a pistol, blunderbuss, or sniper rifle.

There are no item upgrades. Everything you grind absurd amounts of gold for is purely cosmetic. You'll look pretty, but that's about it.

The factions have no stories. They're literally just quest givers with semantically identical quests.

The thing that bugs me most is that there is no quest persistence. Did you pick up two of the three chickens you need for the Merchants, and then have to log out? That's gone. Quest items don't persist from log-off to log-on. When you log in, you aren't even in the same place you were when you logged off, and you're starting fresh on any quests. Even the "message in a bottle" maps disappear upon log-out.

As to what the game does well: It's beautiful, especially the rolling waves and storms; the sailing mechanics are delightful and fun (learning to club haul is great); ship-to-ship battles are an invigorating blast; and holding drunken parties aboard ship while playing your squeeze boxes, puking on friends, and launching yourself out of the cannon are interesting if short-lived distractions.

What the game does, it does solidly (the lack of persistence not withstanding). But it isn't a $60 game, and it isn't a release game. It's an incredibly pretty pre-release or beta, the groundwork for a solid game with another year of work to pump into it a reason to keep playing. I did pretty much everything you can do in about 3 hours (not exaggerating) and then (thankfully) got a refund from Microsoft (whose horrible games store is another story entirely).

Sea of Thieves is a great concept, but it's only about a quarter of a game right now. Put in a class or leveling system, add some actual item upgrades, and give it some sort of over-arcing story (or at least unique factions per story) that makes it worth ongoing play, and it'll be a game worth a triple A price tag. Until then, it's a rip-off at $60.

As you can tell from the abundance of negative reviews, this game is terrible. The reasons it is terrible are only a few things really.
    1. PVP - Shouldn't exist. Not in this game. Not with the combat mechanics. Not with the format of the game. It just doesn't work or make sense.

    2. Content - There are 3 kinds of quests to perform. Wait, make that one. Every quest is "go here, get this, sell for gold". Which brings us to number 3.
    3. There's no point - There's literally no reason to play this game. Nothing done in game progresses anything of any substance. You can buy cosmetic upgrades to your character, weapons, and ship. Yay...

As others have said, this feels like a $20 title at best but really feels even more like a free to play. Please for the love of god don't waste your money on this. It only sends a signal to publishers that they can get away with selling partially complete games for premium prices. I didn't even pay for this game and I feel like I've been screwed over just from the wasted time.

Oh yeah, it's true; the water looks great.

I noticed the "Mysterious Stranger" NPC in the taverns who told me to get to rank 5 in all of the guilds. When I got to 5 they told me to get to 10... I looked it up and turns out that there's no end to it. They just keep telling you to rank up more.

The things I like about the game
This is one of the most visually beautiful games I've ever played. The water is gorgeous, the sunsets look amazing, and the stars and northern lights are simply mesmerizing.
I love the soundtrack and the instruments that you and your friends can play together.
I really enjoy controlling the ships. It's fun adjusting ropes trying to catch the wind just right in your sails, avoiding rocks, and fighting other ships (when you can find any).

If it were WAY more fleshed out, it would be a great game. But it just feels so empty. The structure's there, but they need to put the rest of the game on that structure. I absolutely cannot believe Microsoft is selling this for a full $60.

This was the biggest garbage release of a product I have seen in a very long time and have turned me off from every buying anything from the Microsoft store/Rare.

Yes this game lacks content, and yes it needs more to keep people playing, but for the average player with a couple friends, this game is one of the best organic experiences out there.

I laugh at the people who have already played the game for 30+ hours (likely in just 2-3 sittings) complaining about repetitiveness. That's like expecting to play any online shooter in the same way and then complaining about lack of content. The primary fun will come from fluid interactions with other players, which can take a couple of matchmaking attempts to find a good group (literally did this and made 2 friends last night). The devs are already working to improve matchmaking options and releasing more content. Can't wait as more.

Tips for having fun in this game:

    - Try not to play alone
    - Try to find other plays to add as friends to play with later (build/assemble a crew)
    - Don't expect randoms to want the same experience you are looking for (AKA don't feed the trolls)
    - Be Spontaneous
    - When bored, put the game down for a bit and do something else

Not worth $60 at the moment, but i don't see the devs saying extra costs for new content in the future.

It costs 70€ in my country, doesn't have enough content to justify the price. The gameplay is simply broken, the combat system looks like a game straight out of the 90s with ennemies having aimbots, and overall clunky combat mechanics. The multiplayer system is also broken. It's impossible for solo players to have an enjoyable time on this game, you either get spawn killed or followed by other ships, even if you have no treasure. So it has happened to me that i play 2 hours being constantly chased and killed with no treasure, unable to even start a quest. The quest distribution system is broken, sometimes you find 2 or 3 ships having quests on the same islands (or islands extremely near each other) which obviously wouldn't be a problem if solo were not mixed with 4 players.
Playing with 3 players is even worse. It makes me wonder if the developers actually played their game. Anchor time is too high on the galleon for 3 players, the navigation is too complicated, it requires perfect team cooperation in order to be able to pilot the thing correctly - not even talking about fights.
Everything about this game is mediocre or bad. You often hear people saying "there is not much there, but what is there is actually good", well that's not the case. it's not because their game doesn't crash, that they didn't have installation problems, that their game launches properly without having to reinstall the insider hub, they didnt pay 70€ (86 USD as of now) that it's the case for everyone.
The only positive thing is the realism of the water and the ship driving, but again it's not the purpose of the game. Makes me think most of the development time has been spent on making water realist.
Also keep in mind this is a game that costs 70€ BUT DOES NOT support SLI or Crossfire (and not planned in the future). So unless you have a 1060 6GB or above, you would not be able to play max settings at 1080p.

Every little thing about being on these ships has something to say about the love that went into it: the musical trill when your cannonball connects, the vibration when you turn the wheel past the midpoint, the glint of spyglasses on the horizon, the splash of waves on the deck.

This is not an RPG or an MMO. It's a game about sailing a ship, and running into (sometimes literally) other people on ships.

And it is very, very good at being that.

BUT, big BUT: the quests and missions on the way are very boring, and could have used a lot more variation. The bar was very low when designing the quests, and that is a shame. If there had been a big story or more interesting side quests with little stories, NPCs to talk to, etc., then it would have been a hugely fascinating game. A great pirate mystery to solve, a gigantic hidden treasure that you have to find through clues or riddles ... come on, there are enough pirate films and books to find inspiration. SOMETHING, had been better than NOTHING. Also the sidequests (because that's all the quests are, stupid fetch -quests) themselves have no purpose, no backstory, no plot, no characters, nothing.

The game feels only like a huge empty sandbox, where you can have fun with your friends, but even then there are dull moments when you meet no one else (because this can be pretty rare).

I have the impression that another 6-12 months extra was needed to create the actual content in the game. The basic gameplay is solid, it simply lacks content. Unfortunately. For a $60 game, it is really a ripoff. I would rate it more highly if it were $20. That sounds like a more fair price for this product.

It is a shame, but I could not rate this higher than a 6/10.

Oh, there isn't ACTUALLY any character creation, despite all of the games rewards being cosmetic, even though it's a first person game you never see your character in. Every seemingly good idea they initially had for the game is either absent of horribly executed on, and there is no sense of progression or meaning whatsoever. The emergent gameplay requires you to cross your fingers and hope to run into something interesting, when really the most interesting thing that can happen is you getting up to pee and coming back to see your treasure chests and quest items being ransacked by some other poor souls who fell for this awful excuse for a AAA game.

Avoid this at all costs. If this is what they delivered at launch, there is no chance for redemption even years down the line, especially when their post-launch plans include a death penalty, showing how out of touch they are with what players want. A colossal disappointment all around, but they still sold millions. Great work.

So for example if you kill skeletons or other players, or even the big and mighty kraken, you'll receive NOTHING. no xp, no loot. N O T H I N G.
There is no character progression at all.
The only thing you can do is to earn gold by completing those boring fetch missions,
And you can ONLY use this gold to purchase cosmetics for your character. THATS IT. COSMETICS.
Why on earth would I care if my character wears a fancier eye patch or pants, if I cant even look on my character most of the time?! (this is a first person view game).
The world feels empty most of the time, every island you travel to feels empty. most of the time youll see nothing that "lives" ( no npcs or players at all). some islands got static snakes on them here and there, and they seem to be like statues rather than snakes, and also youll encounter some skeletons as well from time to time. but overall, its an empty game most of the time, and it feels so pointless and boring.

Overall, this game lacks so much content, I don't even think its honest to call this thing a game at all.
I am so glad that I got a refund for this.

A message for Rare team and developers:
If you wanna make this game better, try to add special skills that can be used on npcs, and can be upgraded, for example a fireball or whatever. and also make the weapons upgradeable as well, so player can upgrade specific weapons according to their preferred playstyle, for example more bullets on pistol or shotgun, faster reload and such. give players something to work on, so they can feel they achieve something.
besides that, add a serious amount of more types of quests, like perhaps dungeons below an island with some more types of enemies and bosses.
Give players a purpose to kill something and to engage into combat - like loot or xp with a specific skill or weapon.
    Players need to feel progression!
Do yourself a favor and seriously start adding things into this game before it will sink.
    Good luck

This promising yet over-hyped new franchise is a major let down. Rare did their best to hide the fact that the price tag is too high: 70 euros, that would be 86 $ for our American friends.

The combat system is clunky, the quests are boring as hell, and crossplay is extremely damaging to the pvp aspect of the game, which has no rules or framework, and so leads to grief and unhappy pver's.

Good thing it's about cosmetics, so you can almost look pretty in the game though ... There's no real character customisation, it's actually random.

Some claim that this game is about friendship. Friendship is about friendship, sea of thieves is a pirate game... The sea of thieves friend argument is getting on my nerves, all my friends think as I do. My friends **** on the game as well now that we've seen the actual content (we played the betas and the full game a lot, mind you). We will have fun doing something else for free, like hanging out...

It's a money fraud! From ex developer of Rare ltd.:
    - they plan to add cosmetics and pets only;
    - although dev reported the absence of an anchor under the CEO ship, they ignored it; - you could steal another ship in the game prototype; - you could cook on the ship in the prototype of the game; - in the prototype of the game you could set the ship on fire (eg cooking); - the company

    - the company bet on advertising, because it knew that it was a scam, they had no idea what to do next with it, the game prototype having 6 months had more to offer than the final release released 4 years later;
    - they employed for pennies, probably frauded money for themselves (for Rare / M $);
    - pvp and pve were added at the last minute;
    - the game was made with the Kinect Sport in mind and was initially supposed to be a random character;
    - they probably plan any "news" to spend in the form of DLC $$$;

Cartoon trash made for 12 year old kids in mind. Very shallow and repetitive gameplay, dated cartoon graphics and with little content to justify it's heavy price

While 'fun', there is not alot to keep players coming back. Very shallow and empty. And the utilised streamers and youtuber to build this hype and that was shady when, yeah they've promised more content, but its just a dull rinse and repeat sailing sim

All style and no substance. This game reminds me of dating your "big crush" and all the hopes and dreams that come crashing down when you find out she is shallow and vapid. This game is empty. Even the snakes won't turn around to face the music! The water is beautiful though... but not 90$ beautiful. So much could have been done to make this a multiplayer experience that is meaningful, butAll style and no substance. Best multiplayer game since Minecraft. This game is not for everyone. If you don't like PvP or player interaction then this is not for you. This is a multiplayer game first and foremost. The stories I've created even in the first few days will stick with me forever.

There is more content in this game than people would have you believe. That said, more and varied content will certainly help this game. Right now, it is the constant looking over your shoulder for other pirates and the different interactions while questing that add the real variety to the quests, not the quests themselves.

The features in this game are all polished, honed and perfected to a level not seen in games anymore. The feat that Rare pulled off with not just how beautiful the water is, but how it acts is unheard of. Sailing is done right. The sea feels like a living thing and it very much wants you dead. Ship combat is hectic and intense, everything you could hope for.

Best game of the year for me.

Are you ready to be more pirate?

Amazing game. This game lets you create your own adventure. I believe all of the haters are young kids who grew up never using their imagination.

The game does not have many quests, but that is not what it is about. Doing the three main missions and then saying the game is bad is like a kid getting an action figure, moving its arms up and down, then proclaiming "That's all this does?!

I have had some of the most intense and most enjoyable times in this game. Doing a fort with another team you cant really trust, taking out the treasure gained and having both teams stand on opposite sides picking treasure one by one was extremely nerve racking.

There are no rules, just adventures.

Just came out two days ago. Working through (unfortunate) typical MMO launch issues. This game is already a solid 8/10, If you have 1 to 3 friends to play with. Not really built for solo, but can be done: 6.5/10. Could obviously use some tweaks and quest refinements. The base game is excellent. Content additions have great potential to expand it. Everyone is equal as far as equipment. Progress is 'horizontal' with cosmetic gear and special area unlocks and more complex adventures. Base mechanics and graphics and sound for sailing around the open seas is amazing. It's a sandbox, and a blast for creative types, not so much for pure grinder types and power levelers. There are thieves about, enjoy the pleasant journeys and heart-pounding cannon blasts.
OMG, needs content. Lowering review after much more repetitive play.

Sea of Thieves has successfully redeemed its clumsy launch with Rare being a developer that fully commits to the title with monthly updates for more than two years. Now – it is a game brimming with content, adventure and gorgeous pirate atmosphere with arguably being the best pirate game available and a truly fun multiplayer experience.

A year of updates has helped fill out its light content, but the real magic was there from the start. Rare’s take on cartoon piracy encourages you to behave as a cartoon pirate should: a little bloodthirsty, a little silly, and almost always drunk.

Sea of Thieves has a solid foundation, but unfortunately there is no content and in a few of gameplay the feeling of being a pirate completely disappears. [Issue#285]
