This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel like most of the reviews are extremely unfair for this game, so thought i'd write my own one. Sea of Thieves is a wonderful game, been spending hours since the realease with a few friends. The pvp is engaging and a real adrenaline rush. Raids in the game are amazing the beacon luring all the players into one spot, then later sinking all the ships coming for you and then delivering houndreds of thousands worth of gold to the merchants is a real kicker. Game is only repetetive if you go for a "side quest" at the time and then deliver it. Engage yourself into the world fight for loot there are people sailing around all over the place but most will avoid you cause they're scared of losing their loot. I havent had a calm moment in the game, always fighting someone be it 2v4, 2v4v4 or even more it's always fun to come out on top if you play it right. Sailing and shooting in the game feels great as well, that is coming from a person that tops out on most fps's and competetive games.

My negatives for the game would be that as a PC player i am stuck with xbox live app and it's not a great interface, very buggy and horrible UI and as for the price tag? no it's not worth 60€ maybe a 50€, playing on the game pass thankfully will most likely pay the full price they ask for if they live up to the promise of fair microtransactions and NO loot boxes.

    SPOILER"ISH" below

Side Note: haven't been sunk yet cause we're playing against xbox one players and they have not a chance against a PC player almost Maxed out all the factions,
(which are the places u do sidequests for) in just a few days. Progression is to quick if the game is played right.

Ahh, the gruelling life of a pirate. This game can have you ready to uninstall after an hour of playing, but I would recommend you stick it out a bit longer.

The game starts out with a fun tutorial that gets you excited to begin your pirate life. A relaxing, single player experience to learn the basics. And that's really it. The basics. There is so much more to learn that the game does not teach you.

Shortly after starting the actual game, I died almost every 5 minutes. To skeletons blowing me up as I read a book on a small island (enemies continually respawn... thanks devs for putting reading in the wild...). I died in my anchored boat by another player who was far more experienced than me (I barely knew how to fire my cannons properly) as I began my first quest. I died at the hands of more players as I continued to try and bring in my first chest to port. A random dude stole my treasure AND boat AND yelled at me as he sailed off... then came back and apologised and taught me how to open up my crew to the public.

The first chest I did bring in rewarded me with 70 gold. Seventy. Most cosmetics' (which seems to be this games only sense of progression) costs are in the thousands, if not more. Some beards and hairs are cheaper, granted. This felt like nothing as the tutorial gives you a huge 30,000 gold starting package... the game felt like a slow grind.

After hours of what felt like griefing by other players, I was ready to uninstall. There seems to be no area which is safe from the PvP environment. I'm pretty sure I read an "honour among pirates" poster somewhere, but that was a dirty lie.

Hours later, defeated and forgetting I had opened up my crew to the public, a random dude who also just started playing the game that day joined. We chatted a bit and he seemed to have a completely different starting experience, not being killed by other players at all. We set sail and became the best crew-mates anyone could ask for. We played until 3 in the morning, jamming out on the deck and completing longer missions. Maybe it was the time of day, but all the 13 year old griefers seemed to have disappeared. Nothing but treasure hunting, skeleton smashing, and smooth sailing.

Definitely a game to be played with others. They say you can solo pirate, but as soon as you run into a ship of 4+ pirates in a town, kiss all your hard work/hours of looting goodbye as you try to turn it in at a port.

I read an in-game book about "easy-come-easy-go" and it should be the motto of the game. Everything you work towards hoarding in your ship (food, cannon balls, treasure) can be stolen from random pirates in a second... and then you simply find it again instantly in another random barrel or continue the mission. There is not really any death-penalty other than losing potential hours of treasure hunting.

The game is beautiful, with cartoony graphics. The feeling of sailing is unmatched (compared to games like Stranded Deep or AC Odyssey). I can see the travelling getting boring, but I am still new and loving it. Again, with friends, you can play instruments, talk, fight sharks/ghost ships, cook food while someone else sails, play Jack on the front of the bow like in Titanic, etc.

The sounds of the ocean, instruments, and ambience is well done. The dialogue can be lacking, leaving you reading most NPC conversations.

Cannot wait to jump back in and be slaughtered by Fortnite kids.

Sea of Thieves is a game that managed to borderline come back from the dead. How? How? No one is really quite sure because when the game first released back in 2018, it was highly hyped up by both the developers and the XBOX community alike. You had so many gamers saying this was going to be the game that made the XBOX ONE, the game that would make PlayStation and Nintendo gamers jealous, so on and so fourth. However, it was the complete opposite. Everything gamers were lead to believe was somehow not quite the truth.

I would say most of all, it was purely misdirection. Intentional, yes, but I don't think any major harm was meant. But unfortunately, the gaming community is so very brutal and they do not let things go when they are angry. And gamers certainly became angry about Sea of Thieves.

The game was the negative talking point of the gaming world for quite a few months. Even a friend of mine, who is primarily and XBOX gamer asked me "Yeah, Sea of Thieves, what the hell went wrong there?".

But now, some years later, the game is worthy of some praise. I've been playing it on my PC on Games Pass and I've had my best friend and my girlfriend roped in onto the game with me. First and foremost, I will say this game is pretty much a multiplayer game. The developers say it's solo friendly and while it is somewhat true and they are even adding solo friendly content into the game, can you really do it solo? The answer to that question is not really, not without some great deal of difficulty.

The whole games mechanics works purely on working as a team with other people, so trying to do everything that a whole team needs to do, navigating the map, adjusting and setting the sails and manning the helm, it's all quite the chore. And if you get attacked by one of the in game dangers, such as the Megalodon, a Ghost ship or even the legendary Kraken, then you can basically kiss your ship goodbye and any loot you may of had on it because if you think you cand handle sailing, repairs of the ships damage AND manning the canons all by yourself, it's not going to happen.

So yes, you need friends, you need a crew. And the more, the better.

But the content of the game that is now seen in it is where it's truly shining these days. So much has been added and it's only getting better. Customization of your character, weapons and your ship is all very simple, yes, but it's still fun. It's so fun to sail the seas as the pirate you want to be. Give your pirate a beard, a peg leg, a hook for a hand. Paint your ship red and black, give it a black sail, hoist the skull and crossbones! You can even get pets in the game, such as dogs, cats, monkeys and parrots, and you can even get them outfits that give them peg legs and eye patches!

Yes, a lot of this stuff comes in the form of microtransactions from the in game online store, but the small prices you pay for them are trivial at the end of the day. And I only spend about £5 or so once every few months on them, so I'm not exactly breaking the bank.

The game, even today, is visually beautiful and even now, as a last gen game, the water graphics in the game are the best in existence, even when compared to up and coming new gen games. The sailing mechanics are some of the most fun parts. If you've got one friend manning the map, guiding you as you handle the helm and another tackles the sails, you can be hit with a storm, which means you'll have to fight high waves, strong tides that will throw you off course. Lightning will strike the ocean and can even hit your ship, sparking a fire, meaning you have to scoop water from a barrel on your ship which draws it in from the ocean to put it out. And whne a storm lingers dead over head, it plays havoc with your compass next to your helm, meaning you have to trust your own knowledge of the map and the ship to guide you through it. Me, my girlfriend and my best friend have been thrown way off course in the past by storms, and it's such a fun element of the game.

Other little things that make the game so much fun is the inclusion of playing instruments, making a little band together. Even your pets will dance along to them! In game emotes can be a laugh. You can go fishing, catch some fish, cook them up and store them in your ships food barrel or your own inventory as a health restore option. You have several different canon ammo types, from the regular canonball to chain shots, made to take down the mast of enemy ships, fire bombs, designed to set the ships on fire. And then you have cursed balls, ones which will cast a spell on the ship to give various effects, from making the whole enemy crew sick to forcing the anchor to drop.

Everything in the game, from sailing to hunting down treasure is just all so much fun. But you need friends. That's a definite. Sea of Thieves is worth picking up. Especially on games pass.

The 'Tall-tales' we've done so far have been enjoyable little romps that emulate a grand adventure over multiple chapters.

Even other player interactions, which I have noted that other people have had primarily negative ones, have very rarely been so for me. Talking to people on other ships, forming alliances, and making new friends has been a blast.

This is in my opinion one of the best games to play with friends, the ship's mechanics are really cool and you don´t need more than 4 different weapons. NOT pay to win. I would not recommend to you to buy this game if you going to play it by solo and if you don´t have no one to play with, find a discord server of the game it is always fun.

Sailing on the sea with friends is a truly amazing experience as everyone works together to make the ship operate like a well oiled machine. From angling the sails to catch the most wind to repairing breaches in the hull. It's an amazing experience.

What the Rare forgot to include in this equation is variety. The 3 factions you work for are just a paint coated fetch quests. The games progression is working your way through better tiers of dress up and hoarding your gold.

Of course also being a game about being pirates you have the option of pirating other players stuff. While this is fun and seems great on paper, there is no long term penalty for being "too aggressive" so a lot of players are inclined to play this route and grief as opposed to following the games intended path. I think if Rare was to implement a karma style system or something that added bounties to excessively aggressive players, this could balance out.

With all that being said, the game really is a fun sandbox to play in. Sandbox being the key word there. You really need to be able to find your own fun to really enjoy this title. There is almost no hand holding and almost no one telling you that you are doing a good job. It's up to you to feel like you are.

I've experienced some glitches with the game, my character jitters sometimes, my ship sunk with no holes of water on board and then I disconnected, there are skeletons floating in the air sometimes, but these aren't huge things, they will probably be fixed sat some pint, but the thing that bothers me, is the lack of content, while what is there is good, there isn't really a lot, the missions consist of either, looking at a map and going to the island and digging treasure, killing skeletons until you kill the captain and collecting his skull, or capturing animals and stuff and you deliver these things you collect to outposts to seel them for gold, and to get reputation for the factions you do this for. However, this is pretty much it, there are shipwrecks, and forts, and of course the Kraken (which is very rare to find). But other than that, there is nothing much else to the game besides the PVP.

However, even with this lack of content.....It's fun, I don't know what it is, but I'm having so much fun with the game and even when playing solo. The combat, in my opinion, is fun to do. The PVP just flows, I've been able to queue up with random people and we had genuine fun with it. Sea of Thieves is confusing, it is severely lacking in content, but I enjoy it so much. I hope that Rare sticks to their guns (or cannons I guess) and keep adding content to the game.

Similar to No Man's Sky, they should have waited a long time before releasing the game, because at first it wasn't completed which I think is what caused the low player count. Those are really my only problems with the game. I cannot describe how fun ship combat is. Patching holes, firing cannons, boarding enemy ships, all of it is awesome fun. BUT, big BUT: the quests and missions on the way are very boring, and could have used a lot more variation. The bar was very low when designing the quests, and that is a shame. If there had been a big story or more interesting side quests with little stories, NPCs to talk to, etc., then it would have been a hugely fascinating game. A great pirate mystery to solve, a gigantic hidden treasure that you have to find through clues or riddles ... come on, there are enough pirate films and books to find inspiration. SOMETHING, had been better than NOTHING. Also the sidequests (because that's all the quests are, stupid fetch -quests) themselves have no purpose, no backstory, no plot, no characters, nothing.

The game feels only like a huge empty sandbox, where you can have fun with your friends, but even then there are dull moments when you meet no one else (because this can be pretty rare).

I have the impression that another 6-12 months extra was needed to create the actual content in the game. The basic gameplay is solid, it simply lacks content. Unfortunately. For a $60 game, it is really a ripoff. I would rate it more highly if it were $20. That sounds like a more fair price for this product.

It is a shame, but I could not rate this higher than a 6/10.

Base mechanics and graphics and sound for sailing around the open seas is amazing. It's a sandbox, and a blast for creative types, not so much for pure grinder types and power levelers. There are thieves about, enjoy the pleasant journeys and heart-pounding cannon blasts.
OMG, needs content. Lowering review after much more repetitive play.

Sea of Thieves is marketed as a "Make Your Own Adventure" type of game. After playing it for a few weeks off a trial on GamePass, I've gotten to admire the gorgeous seas, the insanity of friends screwing up certain situations, and then the bitter realization of knowing that I had experienced every type of quest only 3 days in.

The competition for game makers these days is immense, not only are you going up against massive free-to-play giants both on phones and PC, but also with other games-as-a-service platforms like GTA Online, Destiny, and even No Mans Sky. So the most important thing to do is to make your game stick out, make it fun, make it visually appealing. Sea of Thieves definitely has the look and the idea down, but the gameplay simply is dull and samey.

You start out choosing from a pre-made selection of pirates to make as your avatar, it doesn't matter if you don't get one you like, as you will quickly discover that cosmetics and alterations are the only thing you can purchase in this game. Once you start your first quest, you're plunged right in to the sailing mechanics of the game. My group started and immediately got into a terrible storm, setting the ship on fire and striking multiple of us with lightning. At the time, it was extremely stressful and funny, we were laughing crazy hard. And it was a great introduction to the zaniness the game can bring out. We started doing a handful of different missions, including digging, bounties, rhymes, and a fruit crate.

But slowly, you start to notice that those missions are it. If you've done one digging mission you've done all of them. Find the X, dig it up, optionally fight skeletons with the god-awful combat system (we'll come back to this), and sell the loot for gold or doubloons. As a matter of fact, that's the only thing you can do with ANY of the quests in this game, it's only good for gold. But hey, currency is important in these games right? In GTA Online there are endless things to buy, from haircuts, clothing, cars, guns, bases, and even your own business. In Sea of Thieves? There's cosmetics, and not really a ton of them for being a 2 year old game. No upgrades, no side-grades, just cosmetics. Rare has opted for a "horizontal progress" approach which basically means skill is the only thing that improves in the game. But, honestly? This is a hard sell on a full-price game. You have to be so sure that your game is fun to play even without rewards to sell it this way. And Sea of Thieves just isn't.

Even going past the lack of content, even 2 years in, the other big element of sea of thieves is combat, and it
    just

    isn't

    fun.

The hand-to-hand combat with sword and gun is just awful. There's no way to skirt around it. Your sword has a slow floaty animation of 3 swings and a charge up shot, that's it. And you have a few selections of guns to choose from which are all single-shot flintlocks which need to reload between each shot. While this makes sense in a pirate setting, it doesn't make sense in terms of the gameplay. The combat, while being extremely slow, has dire consequences. PVP feels floaty and weightless yet you can die in 3 seconds flat. It's terrible, and I don't know how Rare hasn't completely revamped it by this point.

The naval combat actually shines from time to time, as it's the main gimmick of the game. Sinking other players ships is where I got most of my fun during my playtime. You have a variety of cannonballs to choose from each with their own strength or player-effect, with the endgoal of waterlogging the enemy ship enough to get it to sink. While this was extremely satisfying the first few times around, ship combat became tedious, overlylong, and pointless since there's only gold as a reward, which as stated previously, can only be used on cosmetics. And if it is YOU getting sunk, I hope you like spawn camping! You spawn in the exact same location every time after your respawn timer finishes and you can bet the enemy will be waiting for you to cause death again. This is such an embarrassing oversight, how did Rare not catch this? On top of this there's no real risk to open-firing on someone as there isn't really a punishment for dying OR griefing. There's no punishment for enemy ships repeatedly picking fights with others and no way to opt out. Doesn't make a lot of sense.

It got to the point where I really just wanted to do story missions to get the most out of my trial, but I repeatedly ran into events, griefing ships picking a fight with us and making us lose our progress, or some bug either crashing or halting progress that just made me want to quit. To top all of this off, we're still encountering situation where quests aren't getting triggered or stacks of events are happening to us, such as a kracken encounter and a ghost ship right next to each other.

So honestly? Why bother. When the core gameplay loop isn't fun, why invest any more time into anything else?

However the game is sorely lacking in content variety, as quests often boil down to one of three different types depending on which merchant you visit and they all get repetitive very quickly, the progression system is also virtually non existent. Not to mention various bugs I've experienced from my items disappearing to my money suddenly disappearing to not even being able to play the game due to server issues.

It is vague, it has terrible gameplay and it is poor on variety. I honestly wonder if these devs actually play any games to tell the difference between a good or a bad (or a disgraceful) game. No damage control nor any politically correct **** discourse on how can games be inclusive could ever save this project.

I also never played alone, so I don't really have a view of that part of the game, although I'd surmise that it's probably just as empty as the rest of the game. This game came out about a year ago to the day, and from reading other reviews it has not progressed much since then.

This game honestly feels like an early access game. If it was, I'd have to say it's a pretty decent early access game. The fact is, however, that this is a fully released game. It sure looks like one too, as this is one of the best looking games I've ever played. The style is fantastic, and the sound really adds to the atmosphere which for the first few hours makes the game incredibly immersive. Your first time fighting (or more accurately running from) a Kraken or Megalodon will be an unforgettable experience.

This is where the issues begin. The gameplay, while passable, becomes incredibly repetitive after only a short period of time. When I first began with my friends, it was awesome setting sail and having no clue what we were doing, trying to find our own adventure. Problem is, that adventure doesn't exist. You'll find yourself being more of a delivery boy than a pirate, with insanely generic voyages that are only fun for the first or second time. The Reaper voyages add a little, but really just become a vehicle for more grinding.

Some voyages along with general 'exploration' will end up in ship to ship combat. As with most things in this game, the first time is incredible. But once you've done a couple fights, you've pretty much seen all this combat has to offer. The PVP can freshen this up a bit, but ultimately it still feels one-dimensional. Furthermore, there doesn't really seem to be much reason to engage in PVP beyond doing it for the fun of it. You can fight on land as well, but this is still lackluster, as you'll pretty much only be fighting a couple types of skeletons by playing sword-tag or headshotting. There are only 4 types of weapons; sword, pistol, blunderbuss, and rifle. These weapons can never be upgraded and only undergo cosmetic changes to my knowledge.

All in all, this game has the potential to be amazing, but after a year I find it unlikely that the game will ever reach this potential. As it is, it's a game worth a couple hours of fun with friends for some laughs. I'd recommend getting the game pass with a couple friends to enjoy that first bit. Beyond that, it's an average experience, not really worth its $60 price tag (ouch).

P.S. Character creation is NOT GOOD.

    --

Pirate games are relatively few and far between, so when I first started hearing about Sea of Thieves I was pretty excited; the overall concept sounded amazing, and it was being built by a solid company.

When it finally released, I picked it up with a couple of friends and set sail to pirate it up - and what we found was a game that, had it been called a beta or pre-release and priced at $20-30, was a beautiful start to a game.

But it wasn't a beta. It was supposedly a full release game, and cost as much as any other AAA title out there.

In short, the game suffers from a lack of content. Here's a rundown of what you can do in-game:

-Get a quest from one of the three factions, sail to one or more islands, and do one of three things: Dig up a chest or chests; cage livestock of the proper 'colors'; or fight a couple of waves of skeletons, kill the captain, and take his skull; then sail back to port and deliver/sell the items
-Engage in ocean-based PvP battles that are generally limited to firing cannon, ramming, and boarding to fight with the limited melee and pistol moves
-Find the occasional random chest, skull, or item and take it to the proper faction to sell it
-Find the occasional "message in a bottle", which will send you on a treasure hunt identical to Hoarders' quests
-Come across a shipwreck and risk drowning as you collect - you got it! - more stuff to sell
-Sail to a randomly-spawning "skeleton fort", fight waves of a few different types of skeletons, open the vault, and take the stuff back to sell
-Earn rep for each of the three factions to unlock slight variations of their quests or 'special' skins for your weapons and clothes
-Buy purely cosmetic upgrades to your weapons, clothes, and ship
-Sail off the edge of the map
-Occasionally get attacked by a kraken that you can kill for an achievement and nothing else

That's a lot to do, right?1 Not really.

There are 3 minor variations of fetch quests, random spawns that grant or lead to the same loot you get from fetch quests, forts where you fight a couple of enemy variants to get the same loot you get from the quests, or get ambushed by giant tentacles that you can kill for no tangible purpose. Oh, and PvP (which seems to happen infrequently due to how world instances are populated, and which seems to happen when it's most inconvenient).

    That's the whole experience.

Even the occasional 'special' chest - like the Chest of Grog, which makes you drunk while you carry it, or the Chest of Sorrows, which cries while you're sailing and will sink your ship if you aren't paying attention - is just a slight variation of the only real non-PvE thing you can do in the game, which is fetch quests and more fetch quests.

There are no classes or leveling. Each pirate has the same set of skills, which boils down to sailing the ship, doing two types of attacks with a cutlass, and shooting a pistol, blunderbuss, or sniper rifle.

There are no item upgrades. Everything you grind absurd amounts of gold for is purely cosmetic. You'll look pretty, but that's about it.

The factions have no stories. They're literally just quest givers with semantically identical quests.

The thing that bugs me most is that there is no quest persistence. Did you pick up two of the three chickens you need for the Merchants, and then have to log out? That's gone. Quest items don't persist from log-off to log-on. When you log in, you aren't even in the same place you were when you logged off, and you're starting fresh on any quests. Even the "message in a bottle" maps disappear upon log-out.

As to what the game does well: It's beautiful, especially the rolling waves and storms; the sailing mechanics are delightful and fun (learning to club haul is great); ship-to-ship battles are an invigorating blast; and holding drunken parties aboard ship while playing your squeeze boxes, puking on friends, and launching yourself out of the cannon are interesting if short-lived distractions.

What the game does, it does solidly (the lack of persistence not withstanding). But it isn't a $60 game, and it isn't a release game. It's an incredibly pretty pre-release or beta, the groundwork for a solid game with another year of work to pump into it a reason to keep playing. I did pretty much everything you can do in about 3 hours (not exaggerating) and then (thankfully) got a refund from Microsoft (whose horrible games store is another story entirely).

Sea of Thieves is a great concept, but it's only about a quarter of a game right now. Put in a class or leveling system, add some actual item upgrades, and give it some sort of over-arcing story (or at least unique factions per story) that makes it worth ongoing play, and it'll be a game worth a triple A price tag. Until then, it's a rip-off at $60.

All the quests feel the exact same: sail somewhere, find a thing, go back, rinse and repeat. That's not helped by the fact that doing everything in the game feels like a huge pain in the ass. Playing on any ship but the smallest one, you are simply not able to see ahead of you as you sail, your progress is entirely up to the mercy of the wind, which is somehow ALWAYS in the direct opposite direction of where you are meant to go, slowing your progress to a crawl and making every single trip an annoyance.

All this plus a terrible UI that's a huge mess that focuses on realism rather than convenience, much to the game's detriment, and you have a game with a ton of potential that unfortunately amounts to nothing more than a couple hours of fun.

The game is really fun for spending time with a group of friends. It offers plenty options to roam around, have a chat and complete tasks, do ship battles to have a cackle. However, game doesn't provide any real incentive to grind. The only goal of the adventure mode is to unlock cosmetics by grinding money and emissary (faction) levels.

If you are looking forward to fighting ships PvP mode offers great fun with friends. It kind of resembles a battle royale mode but with ships. You roam around looting and improving your weaponry stock in a large map, fighting with opponent ships. This is probably the most laugh I had in a battle royale mode with friends in a while.

If you are alone and lookıng for a game that ıs not so stressful and just there to be a 'background noise', it might be a decent option. However, it is relatively hard to operate even the smallest ship alone. Moreover, tasks take significantly more time doing alone since there is a lot of manual carrying around involved. Most of your time will be spent walking around carrying chests.

Because of the fun I had with a group of friends I am giving a 5. Otherwise game is very boring to play alone with no goal to achieve.

Where are the ship configuration options such as different types of weapons and defense options like grappling hooks to reel in ships or dropping oil to set it ablaze to ward off followers, being able to change weapon loadouts and positioning and having defensive measures on your ships when being boarded would have been such a brilliant feature.

It's shocking how barebones this game is. The game looks and sounds beautiful, the water is the best I've ever seen, but the basic gameplay and lack of mechanics will kill this game. Such a shame, this held so much promise and the idea is brilliant. Roaming the seas with your friends playing those instruments is terrific, there's just not much to do.

Sea of Thieves is a great technical demo for a ship sailing game that could have been. It looks fantastic and the base model is good, but beyond that it falls very short. Essentially all the game has to offer will be done by about hour 5, 10 or so hours and you've experienced the nuts and bolts of the entire game.

To me it feels like a F2P or $20 game that was supposed to have content packs, quests, add-ons, story line unlocks, and other things you paid for over time. Instead they went with the full price route and it falls short in almost every aspect of actual gameplay. It looks good, the base of it is fun, but all the "story" and progress is just repetitive quests that are nearly identical with a few hard bosses (paired with boring combat) sprinkled in between.

In two years, this game might be fantastic. Its minimalist design and learn as you go sandbox feeling have a lot of potential. As of right now, you wake up in a bar with no tutorial and realize it's because if the game had one it would be more compelling than any story or faction it has to offer.

Stay away until next year and hope for the best.

It honestly feels like a game made by a small dev team that should have come out on Steam Early Access, not a game from Rare backed by Microsoft (ESPECIALLY considering all the launch issues....5 stress tests, and the game is dead on launch day? Come on).

Ignore the fanboys screaming "BLEH IT'S NOT ON MY CONSOLE" and "BLEH IT'S ONE OF MY HANDFUL OF EXCLUSIVES SO IT'S GOOD". The content to price tag ratio is insanely off on this one. At its current state the game heavily lacks in the three core elements which i believe to be valuable in games like sea of thieves, Progression, Quests (Voyages), and loot. Despite it covering these three categories it stumbles in diversity; with loot being gold every time you cash in whatever items you find and having no real presents to game play since gold is only used to buy cosmetics voyages which are just three run of the mill fetch quests either having you kill things look for treasure or look for animals in which (as stated before) is used to cash in for gold to buy cosmetics. Even though the game does have some cool looking skins knowing that they don't do anything except make your guy look a little cooler is just discouraging to the player. The game in the long run is just sailing to and from island to outpost to make more gold to buy more skins which doesn't reflect a players skill but just how much time they have on there hands. Despite having a promising first few hours with breath taking scenery, amazing water effects, and great ship mechanics it just doesn't deliver in a fun repetitive grind to become so-called pirate legend with missions being tedious and sometimes out right frustrating for especially people who play solo. The occasional fort is fun but it falls under the same problem with loot just being items to turn in for money in turn being used to by skins. With decent game play and astounding visuals the game falters in content and progression.

A cracken, new megs and a skeleton ships that will randomly spawn? Wow, gamers today can really have so much fun and be okay with shady developers. They could've put so much stuff in 1 year of updates, like REAL quests, a story maybe, even a background story(because there is no lore), maybe add some interesting places to visit like pve island where people can met other players and have a drink or i don't know(the cartoonish childish artstyle doesn't help the pirate context).

My opinion on Sea of Thieves is extremely mixed. There are definitely things to love about the game, but there are also others that would make me not recommend the game.

To start with the positive, the game definitely nails the sense of adventure. It is simply a really fun time with friends and just being in the world is fun. There are plenty of different activities to do with friends, the Tall Tale quests being a highlight. (Especially the Pirates of the Caribbean-themed quests, those could be a game on their own.)

However, the developer insists on the game being always online, which is definitely a deal-breaker for a large majority of people. A pirate game where other people can try to steal your loot sounds nothing but appropriate on paper, but it has the potential to completely fall flat.

PvP could be a rewarding experience if all parties wanted to battle, but that's simply not the case. Most of the time battles end up being unsatisfying and one-sided, and simply ends up being a waste of time for everyone. It basically devolves into bullying PvE players for the sake of bullying.
Rare had a solution for this with the arena mode but has since scrapped it due to managing it poorly.

Unfortunately, the always-online nature of this game has led to another issue: the Sea of Thieves fanbase is one of the most toxic player bases you'll ever find online.
It is difficult to enjoy an online game filled with people throwing insults and harassment. There are definitely some extremely creative and awesome fans out there, but the sad truth is that they are a few and far between.
There is an easy solution that would fix the game and maybe even bring back some of the 30 million people who downloaded the game and immediately quit after seeing what the game is like.
PvE servers - the ability to play the game with friends only.
Personally I would simply make the online portion of the game free-to-play to increase the amount of players engaging in PvP, and make private games and the Tall Tales exclusive to people who
    actually bought the game.

This, however, would require Rare to admit that they made a mistake and change the game despite it not being their original vision.
I fully believe this is the right move to take. Imagine other games if they didn't listen to fan feedback:
imagine Super Smash Bros but being unable to turn off items because it wasn't the creator's vision that it's a serious fighting game.

Because there isn't really a game here. It has one concept and it hasn't been fleshed out at all. The game world looks utterly sensational, but there's little to do in it. Indeed, all you can do is make your own stories with your mates, but without the framework of content it gets old very, very quickly. Yes, an open world sandbox is great in theory, but even GTA etc. understand that you can't just create a toy box and not put toys in the thing to play with!

You're done inside 30 minutes, an hour or two max. I'm not joking. I wish I was, I really do, because this is one of those dream concepts in gaming - live like a pirate, swing a lightsaber, fly a ship in open space and explore etc. Unfortunately, just like No Man's Sky, Sea of Thieves has absolutely no idea how to make that dream a reality.

I'm already hoping they take this as the proof of concept of a sequel that could be utterly phenomenal if done right. But the consumer shouldn't be paying full price for a proof of concept, and as it stands the player base is going to fall sharply and make this game totally worthless, even moreso than it is now at its' peak.

    Avoid.

And that's for the cheap stuff. - But get this, after you spent the money on the expensive bucket which doesn't do ANYTHING better than the bucket you get for free when you spawn in. The Game Designer really must be a maniac. - The motion and visuals of the water is stunning, and the best part of the game, otherwise this is another empty shell of a game, where you "make up you're own fun." - With nothing else but grind..... but go ahead, go have "fun". This is such a game of missed opportunity. Big let down. Feels like NMS all over again. Expand

I love Sea of Thieves, its a very fun and nice game, one of the better multiplayer experiences I have played, but thats thanks to the people not to the game.

I played all the alphas, and betas before tha game launch, and I always thinked "This game is awesome but it feels empty, need more things to do, more enemies, more islands..." Of course I gived my feedback to Rare. Now I found

Now I found the game its the same thing that in the alpha, just like 3 new things. I was expecting more content in the final launch. Hope they keep working on the game because I thing its awesome and have too much potential.

Great concept with an empty shell of a game. RARE / MS failed to deliver on what could of been a great game. Sea Of Thieves has decent basic gameplay and very good sailing mechanics. That being said it has very little content, no progression, no challenge, it's extremely grindy and it has long stretches of time where nothing happens. I have never experienced such an empty game.

We were lied to by Rare, and I will never forget that.

All tinfoil and no gum. Sure it is pretty, but even with friends in MP this gets stale in a few short hours. Zero consequence, zero progression, 100% cosmetics that cost you day of your life to grind for. It is almost as if this is just an Alpha and they are waiting for the community to dictate where the game design should go. That kind of outsourcing never turns out well. It is not even a sandbox game, which many are claiming, as you are tied to missions from NPC. This is nothing more than a simulator for friends to goof off in. For $15 that would be fine, but for $60 it is an abhorrent cash-grab. Expand

The very poor launch aside(server issues & no gold for items turned in). The good? For the time you want to spend here it’s a laugh riot WITH other people IF you can also find other people while in the world. Roughly Three hours in and I’ve only seen one other person while playing solo or with friends. The game is gorgeous, however on higher settings has a pretty bad frame rate on PC. I’ve never seen water look this good honestly. The bad for me is how simple this game is & I do mean simple.

There are 3 factions and each one gives you fetch quests to go and get something to bring back to them. Each time you do it you will get a faction number to rise which unlocks a cosmetic, exclusive to that faction while getting some gold. You then use the gold to buy skins for your character(that you don’t get to create), your weapons and ship. That’s it. There’s no story, there’s no other quest elements. All of the gear is cosmetic and plays the same as what you start out with. There are chests worth more and some do stuff like fill up your boat randomly with water if it’s a cursed chest.

Overall it feels like a game still in beta and maybe one that was gonna use the loot box algorithm. I’m really disappointed in Rare & for the millionth time this gen, Microsoft. It’s not worth $60 and I felt like the $35 I put into it was too much also. I’d have paid maybe $15 for it, if anything honestly.

This is very much the “Destiny” of pirate games and what I mean by that is another sixty dollar title has little content, a very buggy launch and is very repetitive. It is far worse in that sense than Destiny, but so people know where im coming from that is what I mean. I don't see this making it very far even with some changes due to the slew of games coming out this year, including what looks like a more ambitious pirate themed video game.

Sea of Thieves has successfully redeemed its clumsy launch with Rare being a developer that fully commits to the title with monthly updates for more than two years. Now – it is a game brimming with content, adventure and gorgeous pirate atmosphere with arguably being the best pirate game available and a truly fun multiplayer experience.

A year of updates has helped fill out its light content, but the real magic was there from the start. Rare’s take on cartoon piracy encourages you to behave as a cartoon pirate should: a little bloodthirsty, a little silly, and almost always drunk.

Sea of Thieves has a solid foundation, but unfortunately there is no content and in a few of gameplay the feeling of being a pirate completely disappears. [Issue#285]
