Sable’s Grimoire was the best visual novel I have played in recent memory. What I loved the most about it was even though it was a game about characters that are pretty much in college/just out of high school that it was handled with more maturity than most visual novels I have played. The game opted for getting you to care about the characters rather than the main goal being to get laid. Normally I just do one playthrough of a visual novel and call it a day as that is my cannon ending. This was the first time I felt compelled to play through more than once as I enjoyed the characters so much. It also had one of the most innovative ideas I have seen in that it had a flowchart for the various routes. They were grayed out so you couldn’t see all the possibilities but it allowed you to see where you could go back to change things and even allowed you to go back to that very moment to choose differently for your subsequent playthroughs. If nothing else I hope more visual novels start doing this.

The main character was a little cringy at times. I often wished we got more options of what they would say because his responses without our input made me want to smack him upside the head sometimes. Overall though the story was great and surprisingly mature. The routes flowchart is a game changer. At the least give the demo a try to see if you like it. Zetsubou is quickly becoming my favorite VN developer and this is his best work to date. I played the game on Linux and it never crashed on me nor did I notice any spelling errors.
