Music and sound are fantastic, level design is clever, graphics and animations are perfectly smooth. The story was just okay, but I didn't play because of that. On "easy" it was just the right casual difficulty for me, making me feel insanely agile after I aquired most of the skills. I particularly enjoyed the combat, which lets you freely express your preferred style. You become a true ninja ghost squirrel by the end.

However, there was a lot of switching back and forth between the skills, and I didn't use half of them at all. When my girlfriend played she was missing clearer instructions of what to do next. Sometimes it was also not clear to her if it was her skills or the design that would not let her reach a ledge. There could have been a tutorial moki or something that teaches you certain jump choreos. I also would not mind to have a little bit more playtime. The sandworm chase was already patched by the time I played, I actually made it in my second try. After all, this game definitely is a masterpiece.

Ori and the Will of The Wisps es un juegazo.

Ori and the Will of The Wisps es un juegazo.

The smooth integration of platforming and battles makes for an immersive and memorable gaming experience. The art design and music in the game, just like in its predecessor, are exceptional.

    IMMORTAL OAK

    INTRODUCTION:
Ori and the Will of the Wisps was developed by Moon Studios and released in March 2020. As the sequel to Ori and the Blind Forest, it boasts improvements in all aspects, both technically and creatively, enhancing the beauty of an already excellent title. The game has been fully completed at 100%.

    FIRST STEPS:
The introduction of Ori and the Will of the Wisps consists of short playable sequences interspersed with scenes illustrating the growth of Ori and Ku, the young owl born after the events of the first chapter. These scenes provide information about the characters of Ori and Ku for those who haven't played the first game and showcase their development for those who have. Moreover, the small movement phases give players a taste of what the gameplay will be like throughout the game. Once the introductory sequence is completed, the player finds themselves alone, fighting the corruption that afflicts the forest of Niwen, and a good set of skills is essential to survive and progress in the story. Finally, during the save creation, players can select the difficulty level, which is divided into three stages, with pretty huge gaps.

    ESCAPING FROM "THINGS":
The gameplay of Ori and the Will of the Wisps is that of a pure Metroidvania, a genre based on the progression of the game map through power-ups found at different points in the story. This ensures that players have several hours of exploration to overcome previously inaccessible paths. Additionally, the gameplay is fast-paced and frenetic thanks to various obtainable dashes. Like the first game, there will be various power-ups, with at least one in each game area, allowing players to explore hidden portions of the map. However, this second installment adds several complexities not present in the first one, incorporating more distinct RPG elements. Players can equip up to 3 usable abilities with different effects, both for combat and exploration. These abilities can be freely swapped at any time without cost, and the game freezes to simplify this exchange. There are also several equipable perks available from the pause menu, which provide effective buffs to Ori's combat skills or sustenance. Passive upgrades that unlock through game progression are also present. A hub with various interactable NPCs has been introduced, useful for purchasing and upgrading the aforementioned abilities. It is also designed to accommodate different secondary quests that provide in-game currency, damage and sustenance upgrades, as well as further development of the game's storyline. One of the most appreciated mechanics from the first game, the enemy chase scenes, has been multiplied and greatly improved, adding exciting variety to the gameplay. Finally, true bosses with unique mechanics and designs have been added.

    THE RADIANCE:
The most impressive and carefully crafted aspect of this game is undoubtedly its graphics and the aesthetics of its game world. Every detail, be it animations, backgrounds, cutscenes, or enemies, is meticulously designed. In each game environment, players can pause to admire the background and discover an infinite number of details. The use of colors to evoke certain sensations is carefully crafted, with darker and gloomier areas adorned with vibrant colors to provide a sense of tranquility for players, and tranquil areas where formidable enemies lurk, easily predictable thanks to the game map's design. The menus themselves reveal the passion with which this game was developed, with drawings and illustrations that update during gameplay in response to encountered events. The addition of three-dimensional cutscenes further showcases the studio's skill in pushing their boundaries, bringing to life an astonishing title like this.

    THE CALL OF THE FOREST:
The soundtrack of this game is impressive and surpasses that of its predecessor, incorporating different styles and evolving the ones already used. The attention to sound effects perfectly complements what has been described for the aesthetic aspect.

    BUT WHY A 9?

    PROS:
The merits of this game are so numerous that they are indescribable in such few characters. This is one of those reasons to purchase a console, as it was exclusive for years. It is an almost flawless title that reaches aesthetic levels capable of setting a very high bar in the 2D platforming landscape.

    CONS:
The drawbacks are extremely limited. They could be the limited number of different enemies or the potential bugs that can be encountered. The lack of a true endgame area, present in the first game, can also be considered a con. Additionally, the inspiration from Hollow Knight could be seen as a downside since various features, such as the amulets, are clearly influenced. Lastly, due to the game's frenetic pace, combat can often become chaotic and it is easy to take damage without realizing it.

    RATING:
    Gameplay: 9,5
    Music: 9,5
    Story: 8,5
    Exploration: 9,5

The game is insane in some aspects. Art direction, sound design, graphics etc. But one thing hold me back and made me quit the game: level design fragmentation. I feel like almost all areas needed something i didn`t have to proceed. 1 time for area is okay, but 2/3? I just lost my will to play because of that (i played for the second time and 6 hours).

Ori is an absolute gem of a game.
The stunning visuals and immersive soundtrack create an enchanting atmosphere that pulls you right into Ori's world. The gameplay is smooth and challenging, with a great balance of platforming and combat. I can't take any more of the frustration. because there has been A LOT of it, so many things, like getting stuck in walls, controls not responding, enemies action totally stupid and throwing themselves into spikes for no reason,

The soundtrack is impeccable and the gameplay is simple but challenging. Of course, playing on a high difficulty will help but the way the game works the dynamics of skills to fight and move through the scenario was done perfectly. It is a must.

For the first hour of a regular game-play, it constantly seemed to me that the game was uncomfortable, the character moves/jumps amorphously, but then I got used to it and, quite normally, passed the most difficult places of the game, and traveling through locations was fast due to a "local parkour" without errors and damage.
There are small complaints about the game, like self-repetitions, in a couple of places, but these are all trifles and nit-picking. Like I said - it's still a gaming masterpiece... which, in the second part, put an end to the history of our character Ori.

Let's examine this sweet game, which I think Metroidvania lovers should definitely try, in terms of gameplay, art design and story.

First of all, the game organized a gameplay without leaving the metroidvania classification. You cannot go to certain places, after unlocking some abilities, you can go back and continue exploring. So, did the game lead you to exploration? Yeah. The rewards you receive as a result of exploration in the game do not affect your game to such an extent that it does not affect them at all. We can say it in its full form. Apart from that, the fighting mechanics are designed to leave a very sweet taste in the mouth. There are absolutely no small enemies that you will have to struggle with, and after a certain point they are like a chore.

The most important point of the game is the atmosphere. Together with both the image and the music, this game is perhaps one of the best games of all time. First of all, let's say that the music is handled in accordance with the theme of each episode. As soon as I finished the game, I searched the internet for their music. Images and animations, on the other hand, look like they were made by a master. It has a simple yet inclusive atmosphere, away from the crazy trend we call "fancy" that has emerged recently. The game has also been so determined about animations. There are neither animations that you hate to see because they draw your attention too much, nor "why is there no animation here?" sequences you mentioned. This art design that doesn't want you to leave the game is definitely commendable.

The story of the game is definitely forgotten, besides the two factors we just mentioned. Although the game reminds us of our purpose at moderate intervals, it is not possible to remember it unless the story is too deep in this atmosphere and gameplay. The story isn't very deep either. The story of this game is a continuation of the previous game, so I say play the previous one, even if you are not going to play it, check out a summary.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps, which was given as a very good answer to the question of how Triple A would be a metroidvania game, is absolutely a masterpiece.

I can't take any more of the frustration. because there has been A LOT of it, so many things, like getting stuck in walls, controls not responding, enemies action totally stupid and throwing themselves into spikes for no reason,
multiple useless systems that add nothing to the core game experience.

The sound is totally forgettable, the story was, we got blown away and separated, the graphics were clumsy. You couldn't see things you needed to see, quite often in fact. It just has no charm. A direct sequel to Ori and the Blind Forest, it follows on from the plot of the first game. In the introduction to the game, Ori and his little family help to raise Ku the owl. She is an adorable little thing, but has a bum wing and so has a hard time flying. Fortunately, you figure out that you can use one of her mom’s feathers (an item from the first game) on her wing as a sort of prosthesis, and she can fly after a fashion.

Naturally, this cuteness can only last so long, and it isn’t long before Ori and Ku fly into a horrible storm over a nasty, shadowy forest. You get separated from Ku, and it is up to Ori to venture into this scary new world to rescue his friend/daughter.

Visually, this game is pretty spectacular; it makes excellent use of light and dark, the enemies are menacing but have a certain glowy aesthetic appeal to them, while the various allied creatures are cute or cool looking. Everything in this game looks really good.

On top of that, the game works quite well at pulling at your heartstrings. Not only are characters emotive, with Ori holding and hugging Ku, and sometimes getting hugs back, but the world has problems and the game does a good job of making you want to protect the people in it from them. The darkness is forboding, and bad things are happening to good people who are helping you out – or just trying to survive.

As such, the game does a really good job of making you feel bad for the characters, and while it doesn’t always hit, it generally does, even if it ends up making the game a bit predictable at times. Still, these developments work well, and we do feel bad for various characters – even the villains at times, as we understand the origin of their dark feelings.

If I had a quibble with the aesthetic half of the game, it is that the narrator is a bit of a weak point. The game probably would have been more powerful if it hadn’t had one, and while there IS a plot-related reason for their existence, I’m not sure that the payoff from it was ultimately worth the exposition.

The gameplay, too, is really good. Ori’s movements are really fluid, and his command set is quite solid – you eventually gain the ability to double and triple jump, air dash, “bash” (launching yourself off of enemies or projectiles in mid-air, which will also send the enemy/projectile flying in the opposite direction, making it useful both offensively and for mobility), float (which isn’t actually that useful by the time you get it, but still appreciated), climb up walls and walljump, and generally get all the abilities you’d expect to. But what makes the game work well is that Ori’s movements are really smooth, and it feels good to control him – Ori is highly responsive to your commands, and easy to control and get to do what you want him to do.

There are a number of interesting environments to go through, with a variety of mechanics; these include not only interesting platforming puzzles, but things like darkness that closes in around you and which requires you to dash from light to light, or icy areas that you need to thaw out by manipulating projectiles and getting them to the right location.

There are even some very interesting timed segments, where you are trying to escape from some big horrible monster, or a catastrophe like an avalanche or flood, and have to keep moving as the environment disintegrates around you. These are really cool, and end up taking up the space of most of the boss fights in the game – they actively test your platforming skills, and are long enough to be exciting and present at least some challenge while short enough not to be obnoxiously long. This extends to some “spirit races” as well, where you race a ghostly spirit to some destination for a reward.

Ori also does something else important – it actually has good pacing. Many Metroidvanias are a bit lame at the start of the game, but Ori manages to engage the audience with an unfamiliar landscape, excellent visuals while carrying around only a torch as a weapon, and getting the player some extra movement abilities early enough to avoid feeling stale.

The game’s only real weakness is the combat, but it is a rather significant one. Ori’s own abilities are actually pretty cool – he has quite a variety of combat powers, and there’s even a “shard system” that allows you to modify them. The problem is, the game fails to make interesting use of them. Almost every enemy can be beaten with your basic attack, the few who can’t can be beaten with a hammer smash ability you buy, and… that’s about it. It doesn't help that the game is sparse on bosses as well, and the few that exist are pretty simple.

Overall, Ori 2 is a very good game, and one well worth playing if you like Metroidvanias or enjoy the aesthetics of the promo videos.

I Have played this game 5 times and it is my favorite game.

    Gameplay

The game takes the platforming and combat from the previous game and enhances and expands on it perfectly. Many of the similar platforming techniques are followed over as well as new additions. The additions make for great platforming that feels satisfying and controls so well that exploring is something sought after rather than something of tedium. The combat is massively expanded in this game with a plethora of different weapons that can be selected and placed on 3 different ability slots, each weapon has a unique feel that is beneficial in different circumstances. I personally really liked the hammer which felt really great to use even at the trade off of being a bit slower. It also features a really fun upgrade that makes it an even better weapon that works very well. The combat in the game is more traditional of a 2d metroidvania but with much more diversity. There is also the addition of boss fights which test combat and are very unique and well made, these are definite highlights of the game. The exploration is greatly enhanced here as each area is somehow even more beautiful than the first game and will need to be revisited as you unlock more abilities, more so than the previous game and bringing it more inline with a traditional metroidvania. The levels also change as you accomplish certain aspects of the story, you start in the beginning area at night time and during a storm which will completely change after a bit of progress to being during the day, this change makes the world feel more alive and grounds the story in time more, it also makes for a better experience when retraversing the previous areas as is quite common. In complete difference from the first game the sequel features many creatures that you will meet and speak with that populate the world and add to the worldbuilding, many of these creatures will try to help you on your journey and are where you can acquire more weapons and upgrades, some of these characters also have quests you can do to unlock even more things and that each tell their own little story. The characters also serve as a way to tell some exposition as characters give their tale of how they came to be and their world came to be. Another new addition is the shard system, this system is very similar to the charm system from Hollow Knight and allows the player to prioritize different things, many shards will help to increase survivability or will increase your damage dealt in exchange for being dealt increased damage. Certain shards work only at high or low health which leads to strategizing how often to heal and where to be at with health. You start with 3 slots for shards but can increase this number by completing combat shrines which serve as a little arena with a few waves that feature the various enemies found in their respective area. Another new addition is spirit trials, these are mini platforming based speedruns that offer spirit light for completing under a certain time, spirit light is the currency used to purchase abilities and upgrades. Each of these features blends together to create a perfect gameplay experience that keeps the player engaged the entire game and offers a variety of options for how to play the game.

    Story

The story follows Ori in the immediate aftermath of the first game. The new owl has hatched named Ku and struggles with an injured wing to fly, using the feather from the first game Naru, Gumo and Ori fashion Ku a makeshift wing that works to fly. The majority of the story finds Ori searching to be reunited with Ku and eventually to help restore the light to a land that has lost it.

    Graphics

Somehow this game is even more beautiful than the first one. The artwork of the backgrounds is simply insane once again and is even better in this one. Each background could be a painting in its own right. One of my complaints with the first game was that the backgrounds sometimes blocked enemies, in this one that is no longer the case and the backgrounds got even better. A huge improvement of this game is character designs, with much more important story characters there's no shortage of well designed characters and different ones, each of the main ones feels unique and looks great, the Moki’s especially look incredible.

    Soundtrack

The soundtrack simply outdoes itself and right from the prologue, the song Ku’s First Flight is an incredible piece that’s intensity builds in tune with Ku flying that serves as an introduction to the new world. The track from the first area, A Shine Upon Inkwater Marsh is beautiful and my favorite track of the game. The songs from the escape sequences are even more intense than the first game. Boss fight themes are great and fit well with the fight.

    Conclusion

This game is a masterpiece, there is no other way to describe it. If you like metroidvanias or platformers buy it, or play it on gamepass.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is an excellent continuation of the story of Ori's adventures on the second island of Niven.
Having completed the game in 18 hours and recorded a walkthrough, I will say one thing:
despite the fact that I had problems with the sound, I liked the game in all aspects of the game from the narrative of the story to the gameplay. Compared to the first part, the second part surpassed the first very much. The game was constantly addictive with its beauty of each location and pleasant music that you want to listen to again and again.
In some moments, this game will make even the most stone man roar with the experience of the main characters of the game.
I personally didn't hold back and kept a handkerchief next to me just in case.
If someone tells you that the game is a complete brown spot and will dissuade you from buying the game, do not listen to him and silently take and play, you will never regret the 515 rubles spent.

There are way more abilities than the previous Ori. The upgrade and ability system is very similar to HK.

In Hollow Knight the maps are 100% necessary. In Ori they're 100% preference since the map reveals itself as you explore anyway. So they don't make you run around a dark maze the whole game like HK does.

Some nice changes to the environment. It's more "alive" in both visuals and audibles.

I'm disappointed at the first "boss fight" with the massive wolf. It seems to be going in the direction of "really hard = fun", and generally doesn't make sense. What you're supposed to do is very unintuitive. I had to look up a playthrough on youtube only to see that someone very good at the game barely survives as well, and that the fight indeed makes little sense.

There are lots of little things that make it a lot worse than the first game. Eg:
    * At one point there is no way to continue, but unbeknownst to you you have to step far enough in one direction to trigger a cut scene that will allow you to continue. I didn't step far enough the first time and ended up going back for 30 minutes through the previous parts of the map trying to figure out where to go.
    * Having to do mundane/tedious things over and over because... I don't know why. Did they simply do a bad job in the beta/playthrough testing, or did they actually want mundane parts of the game to be demanding such precision?
    * The hook doesn't work many times when it seems like it should. A similar issue with jumping - I have triple jump but when dashing out of water during a race I only have 1 jump.
    * I experienced something similar with bash. I knew how it works from the previous game, but when I got the "shoot the fireball then bash to reach higher" part it wasn't working and I had to look at a playthrough to determine that I just needed to keep trying till it finally worked right. And I'm regularly experiencing problems with bash not working properly.
    * Then in another part of the game you get these explosive things to follow you, and you've done it a dozen times already so you know how it works, but then this one just isn't working. I look up a playthrough and see the person doing the same thing as me, but it works for them.
    * There's a bug with achievements not unlocking. Restarting the game resolved it for me.

And almost all of this stuff I see people complaining about the exact same bugs a year ago and they're still not patched.

You essentially have one button for 3 different abilities - glide, hook, bash - and that really messes you up during movement and combat. Also, even the way the abilities are implemented seems poor. Eg: you hook to enemies, which is great, but then for some reason you immediately get pushed away from them, making it totally useless.
Then later in the game you get another ability very similar to hook, but only works for sand, and is bound to another key...

Many of the chase scenes seem poorly designed. Have to watch someone else do it to find out why I was dying and what route they wanted me to take. And I see them having the exact same frustrating issues/confusion.

In the second half of the game there are too many spots where you have to go look up on youtube where they want you to go. And too many parts that are unnecessarily tedious and thus zap the enjoyment out of the game.

They didn't improve/fix one annoying issue with the previous game where the map shows 98 or 99% complete but there are no obvious places you missed. After running around a bunch I figured out that the things you buy to reveal all the items on the map don't even work properly/fully.

The longest side quest in the game (that reveals all hidden items) is completely miss-able. I didn't find out about it till the end of the game when I looked something up online.

Close to perfection. Great controls, breathtaking graphics, emotional somtimes a bit cheesy story. Great sound. Most times challenging but in the last third Ori is a bit too strong and has too much abilities to solve the jnr-sections and battle the enemies.
    Boss fights were awesome.

Whereas Hollow Knight is very precise, movement in Ori tends to be sticky, imprecise, and context-sensitive. Compared to the first Ori game, this one is much less linear and clearly qualifies as a true MV.

The best part of the game is the artwork. The animated layered backgrounds are absolutely gorgeous.

I don't know what it is but I feel like this game is missing something. Don't get me wrong, I still love the game and have played it multiple times but I miss something that was there in Ori and the Blind Forest

The second entry of the Ori series improves on every aspect of the first game. Ori has more skills (especially in combat) and the game map is larger.

He became one of my favorite composers for video games and I hope to hear a lot from him in the future. It evokes such strong emotions that fit the game perfectly.

The game itself is definitely harder than the first entry but doable with trial and error. I really hope they somehow continue this series in the future.

I've never seen and I probably won't ever see any game whose soundtrack could go through my head again and again for a year. I don't want to judge it in any way, for me this is a masterpiece series. I can't describe it, I can only blindly rate it with 10.

Game of The Year 2020 in my opinion!
A poetic game with a tale-like story told with as little cinematics as possible and with tons of juicy and exciting gameplay.
Musically wonderful, this game is the definition of sequel that transcends the previous game: better in every plans it even gracefully complete the whole story.

An honest second installment, which is missing only the courage to leave the traditional dogmas of the genre and try something new. [Issue#303]

It’s a shining example of how to do a sequel. They kept the core of what made the original enjoyable while switching up just about everything they could. There are some elements I feel it did better, some where I feel the original did better with, but on the whole they feel like they’re on equal footing. If you want a game that’s more of an experience than simply something to kill time, if you want something that showcases how artistic games can be, if you want an action platformer with plenty of approaches to combat, I can’t recommend enough that you pick up Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Also Ori and the Blind Forest if you haven’t played it already.

Its moments of brilliance are worth experiencing, but they shouldn't blind anyone to the shortcomings of a sequel that, underneath that beautiful surface, is as frustratingly flawed as the first. [Issue#346, p.98]
