This game finally delivers on the original hype. I've been playing it for a couple of hours and it's utterly entranced me. The exploration element is done so well, it feels like there's just so much to discover.

For a game dev to receive so much criticism at launch, but to continue on to improve the game through free major updates, is commendable.

Think Elite Dangerous meets Sub Nautica. Fun times

First off, I want to state that I am not having any of the problems that were reported minutes after the games release yesterday (8/12/2016). I am seeing a few stutters in the frame rate, but that's really about it.

I love exploration games. Flight Simulator, Train Simulator, Minecraft, Creativerse, 7 Days to Die, Fallout 4 the GTA franchise even Starbound. I can spend hours just wandering around looking at what the game or developer generated for me to explore.

No Man's Sky is pretty much the ultimate version of that type of game. With 18 Quintillion world in just one (of possibly many) galaxies, there is just no limit to my exploration bug.

World generation is crazy, making Minecraft look tame, The creatures and plants that live on these worlds are straight out of 1960's SciFi book covers and comic books.

There is even an underlying story to the four major races in the game (if there are four, I have only found one so far).

If I had any complaints, it would be inventory management or the early lack of inventory space is a pain. However I could say the same for pretty much every game I mentioned above. You can fairly quickly start increasing those spaces by finding objects on the planets that will increase your suits inventory.

A nit pick would be that planets usually don't bunch up together like they have here. There should be planets all around their star. I should have to fly past the star to get to planets that might be on the other side. Not the case here. They are all pretty much bunched up together. Physics wouldn't allow this, but hey. It's a game not a true simulator.

That's really it. The fact that there is probably one one "hand drawn" object in the game, the main alien races mentioned earlier. Everything else is put together by the game, Ships, Multi-tool guns, plants, animals, planets, everything. So far, they all look fantastic.

If you are into Minecraft, Creativerse, 7 Days to Die, you will be dropping those games in favor of No Man's Sky for quite some time. I absolutely recommend this one!

Im running the game at 1440p with Maxed settings the game just looks amazing. I have over 45 hours on steam at the time of review and about 20 hours on PS4 which is a mistake cuz PC graphics vs PS4... ya, enough said.

After you get about 7-10 jumps out from your start location, the game starts getting more challenging. Around the same time you'll most likely have mastered the skills needed to finish the trip to the center or whatever you choose to do in the game. The more you explore the more unbelievable discovery's you will make.

Despite all the negative crap this game does NOT deserve, you can endlessly explore to your hearts desire. There is always something new to see that other ppl have or will never see but that you can share your discovery's with others. The ships are all different, you will always find new ships, new planets, new animal life, plant life. Iv learned over 800 words across 3 different alien races so far. Iv named 4 planets out of the 30 plus I have discovered and look forward to discovering thousands more, Named sol systems, Animals, Plants whatever I want or you can choose to upload your discovery's without naming them yourself and keeping the name that NMS gives them. Iv Seen sunset and sunrise on alien worlds that stimulated my imagination. I fought Pirates in space and I swam with monsters in pink oceans, Iv explored endless caverns. Iv found monoliths from ancient alien civilizations and spoke with a space stations sized Atlas. The universe is endless yet somehow I dont feel the need to rush to end it, but the end feels within reach, the scale alone is mind blowing.

The game is amazing. It is worth the $60 price tag not just because its a great game, but because you know the game is worth it when the reviewers on steam are getting (20+ hours)!? Most ppl spend $60 on a game they get less than 10 hours and they give it a good review... If any reviewer has less than a 2 hours Dont even bother reading the review.

To many people jumped into No Man's Sky thinking they would get something out of it that was never really their and/or They cant run the game, cuz they are a bunch of NOOBS! "My Pc cant run it..."

Exploring is the name of the game, and space travel is all I care for. People rib the game for being "pointless," but I'd argue it was a true space sim when it first came out. The universe is an empty place, why would it be filled with countless species?

This game is SO much fun and I will admit I love playing with my buds now, but I always understood and appreciated the game's original vision.

Sure the flight controls are a little bit awkward on PC, I wish there was joystick support, but still, it is a good time. I wholeheartedly recommend this game. It had a few glitfhes but nothing that makes it unplayable for me. No doubt the devs will fix these things soon.

Even the Witcher 3 or Skyrim didn't capture me this much. This game is unique, strange and atmospheric. So many people are punishing it for not following some of the 'rules' of modern AAA gaming. It isn't an AAA title, and maybe the only mistake Hello Games made was not in the game, but was associating Sony, the epitome of typical gaming, on board. This reminds me of Starflight, Outcast, Elite, Privateer, Escape Velocity and some of the classic PC games of the past (and FTL's inventory system!), before games became mainstream and sanitised. If you 'get it', you don't need to be convinced. If you don't get it, you never will. Go back to Assassin's Creed or something. Expand

I was surprised considering 90% of the reviews said it only got 30 on a good day. The game looked great, the planet i was on was full of life, its just great! I've played around 30+ hours so far and have warped 20+ times. I cant put it down, and once i figured out the basics, which did take me a little while, but once i did, it was great. Most people haven't even played long enough to actually get into it, they play for a few hours and go to a few planets and boom their bored, obviously not the game for them. There is always something new to do, with objective. I sometimes spend hours just colecting rare resources from a hostile planet to save up for a new ship, or just to build my wealth to buy equipment to warp to different types of stars. There is no reason for the negative reviews, because you all bought this game knowing exactly what you were purchasing. Sean showed a lot more than i expected him to, but it was mainly to calm the Nancys. The game is simply art, and if you didnt buy it purely for exploration, then i dont know what the hell you were expecting and could care less if you put it down and didnt touch it again. Overall, i enjoy the game, i am addicted and thinking about buying a gaming laptop so i can play it while at work, because once you get hooked, your hooked. Also, everyone needs to stop comparing it to other games, because this is nothing like other games, nor is it trying to be, your reviews are irrelevant. From what i saw in trailers, video game play and everything sean has said about the game, it is exactly what i pictured it would be, so if you were dissapointed than you clearly didnt read up on what you were buying. Dear No Man's Sky Haters…

    You. Yes, you!
The one screaming, "There is no gameplay!" and "They lied about the multiplayer!" and other slurs I dare not mention.

    Tread lightly.

You are one. We are hundreds, thousands. Millions. You aren't just IN the minority; you ARE the minority.

I don't feel awkward or anxious playing No Man's Sky around others, and your words don't affect me. Many others, however, are coming out of their shells for the first time in their lives. This is the first time many are enjoying the beautiful world that has been generated for us - and it IS beautiful. Incredibly so. DON'T ruin this for them.

We No Man's Sky fans may have our differences, but we will not hesitate to come to the aid of our fellow explorers, especially against someone who so virulently slurs that which has brought us all together.
Don't take this the wrong way. I don't hate you. I don't fear you.

    I pity you.

I'm sorry that you feel this way towards us. I'm sorry that No Man's Sky is such a bane to your existence. And I'm sorry that you are missing out on such a wonderful experience. Mostly, though, I'm sorry that you feel the need to go around and publicly chastise and berate others. I'm sorry that, to ensure your own validity, you need to make others feel invalid. I'm sorry that your self-worth is so infinitesimally miniscule that you have to make others feel less-than-human, at least in your own denatured mind, just to feel whole. I am truly sorry that day-in and day-out you have to put up with your worthless, meaningless, Shakespearean tragedy of a life.
I ask you politely to cease your unnecessary cries for attention, and instead invite you to join our ranks. Uninstall Call of Duty, start up No Man's Sky, and breathe in the splendour and the amazement of your first space landing, and then, maybe, just maybe, you'll see what you've been so hopelessly searching for this whole time.

No Man's Sky : NEXT is a completely reworked, refined gaming experience and offers definitely what was promised 2 Years ago. The Game is now what it should have been in the beginning - But this shouldn't stop us from forgiving Hello Games due to their hard work in the last 2 years delivering what they promised. For my part, I LOVE this Game now. It is so much fun, has so much content, so much to do - And gives you an idea of our galaxy like no game before. You are just a small person in a galaxy so huge, you will never fully discover everything in a lifetime - And you fight for your own reasons, you follow your own goals - And still you get a nicely done story line to follow, if you so desire.

Only thing that I didn't like is hiding some features behind progress walls - but these fade pretty early in the game and you are free to go. It doesn't change anything about the fact that this game is now a true 10/10.

Review of Game of the Year

I have personally cancelled this game twice prior, and had only ordered the game last Friday. I received the PS4 copy, and purchased a PC copy as well after having played the game.

What a treat! This is a beautiful game that expands the horizon of whatever current technology can offer, or had been able to offer anyway. As you delve into the game, you begin to realize just how massive this game is. To be able to simply fly off in space and go to any star, is simply out of the world. The diversity in plants, animals, weather, technology, etc, I can't believe only a few people worked on this game. What a feat.

The colors in this game are amazingly well done. Hard to believe that they are randomly generated. The music and sound is even better. I imagine they are triggered by the type of environment you encounter, and the sound of grass rustling, sea breeze, and everything else is simply amazing.

Most importantly, the amazing experience this game delivers can't be put into words. Thank you Sean and the team for delivering us the game of this generation. We hope to see more of you.

New planets with hazards and my favorite improvement... wait for it...... VARIABLE GRAVITY!!!.

    Pros:
-runs smoothly on an older system gtx 860mobile at medium graphics settings 1080p. (update: Oct. 2020... NMS is no longer friendly to my gtx 860, i'd recommend a minimum of a gtx 960 or better now)
-The ships and are beautifully designed. Update: even greater diversity of ships now. Oct 2020
-I really enjoy how the multitools work as weapons / tools and how they are replaced and upgraded.
-the game provides some challenge in terms of environment.
-The planets and creatures are awesome and diverse (enough).
-exploration via ship or on foot is wonderful.
-leaving a planet and landing on one is thrilling.
-crafting bases is fun and easy to understand.
-Grinding for resources is not necessary, IF!, one learns the shortcuts.

    Cons:
-Few intelligent alien life forms to fight against on foot (only the sentinals are available to fight)
-Little diversity in spaceship vs spaceship dog fighting.
-Void of other players to interact with.. Update: Oct. 2020, limited interaction with other players.
-The game could be more accurate in terms of elements e.g. di-hydrogen, deuterium, tritium and what could be used with such elements on the periodic table if not only to be educational.
-NO gas planets / giants? There should at least be planets that one should avoid at all costs or risk instant death and alternatively the player can send a probe into such planets.
-No interaction with Stars, no change in gravity experienced on different planet / massive bodies (Update: there is now different experiences in gravity... BRAVO!!).

This game was created by very very few people and is far begetter than most AAA titles on release, The amount you can do in just the base game is insane, played it for 7 hours straight, cannot wait to see what they add with future updates... The game is exactly what Sean Murray said it would be, and I'm extremely pleased. It doesn't at all deserve all the hate.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

I find it is everything Sean Murray said it would be and it has met my expectations to the full. I do realise it is quite a niche game, which is probably why some people have been disappointed, but if like me you are into 70's science fiction writing, it is like living in one of those books, one that never ends. Luckily, I've had no problems running this on my GTX 970 and I do feel sorry for those people with problems, but most of the reviews, have given this game an extremely low score because of these issues and I feel that is unfair. It is made by a small team who are doing their utmost to fix these issues, and they will be fixed. The controls, are a bit on the stiff side, but this issue is also being fixed. I just think it would be fairer for those people to wait a few days until these technical issues are ironed out (if that's your objection with the game),rather than giving a game you haven't even played a score of 1 or less. This small team has been working very passionately for the last 4 years on this game, and I feel they deserve more consideration. Well done Hello Games. Expand

The storyline is a story suggestion, the flight controls are a little lacking but only when trying to land and other atmospheric maneuvers, in space i like how it handles.

I had 2 crashes but that's in +20 hours of gameplay

    bullet points
    [*] No real storyline
[*] Very big in a relatively small way
    [*] Beautiful
[*] no handholding gameplaywise. You will have to figure stuff out yourself
[*] In the beginning it will be more scrounging for parts and resources but later on you will have the 'exploration experience'
[*] You will have to immerge yourself, it will not do it for you.

It would be a 7 but the 0 brigade screwed the userscore so iim giving 3 points extra to try and correct this for whatever good it will do.

Yes, there may have been a lack of actual gameplay but exploring worlds that no one but I will ever see in my lifetime is not only glorious but extremely wonderful and eye-opening. The graphics and color scheme were amazing, the small but substantive gameplay that they had were meant to strive for, and the random generated planets and galaxies were something to look forward to!!! Hello Games wanted you to get lost in each and every one of these planets and to focus less on the destination and revel every moment in the journey. A few things that they could have done to really sell the people at the initial release would have been to provide a better random-procedural algorithm for making some animals to prevent lookalikes on different planets!! But that just goes to show that science isn't perfect and animals can, due to convergent evolution, look the same. What I hope that people would continue to do is to keep playing the game and to not delete it. The developers at Hello Games have been working non-stop to deliver updates that would live up to your standards, your dreams. Also, if you love the modding community, look for some available mods on Nexus or any other modding website. DON'T LISTEN TO CRITICS!
Before the game was released, all the critic websites said this project was genius. Finally, when it was released, the critic websites didn't get money for commercials and advertising so they gave it a score of 6 or 7 out of 10. When will people understand that big critic and commercial websites need to make money to survive. They don't work for free. Usually, the indie studios don't have the money to pay for reviews or advertising. Do you think huge commercial websites like IGN and GameSpot will give this game a good score without getting some money? If they did, then nobody would pay them and their business will close.

This is a different game from what that was on the start.
I think game must be rescored because, now it obvious,
what people don't change their score no matter how much work was done.
Thanks Hello Games for the game, my friends and I had a lot of fun playing it now.

One of the best space games ever. Space is infinite and this is exactly what this games lets you experience. No multiplayer og co-op, but a solid single player exploration game. You're alone in a vast universe. This is such a relief. Cinematics, multiplayer and online gaming almost killed my enjoyment of playing games, but no more... Thank you so much Hello games.

Loved the game from when it was first released and now after the NEXT update I love it even more. It's like a whole new game since this update. So many changes and improvements. Still isn't for people who want an Elite Dangerous experience, rather for those who like being alone but every now and again wouldn't mind a friend popping over.

Following two years of enhancements, the game is now unrecognisable to that released in 2016. Significant new content and well considered changes to the story and game play loops make this the game promised, and a must play experience for any fans of Sci fi, spare exploration, base building or survival.

I bought this game just recently after the HUGE NEXT rework! I really hope some old users come back to review their opinions. If survival sandbox is a genre you enjoy this is a must pick!

2018 and No Man's Sky is finally what it was set out to be. Years of free updates have brought what was once probably the most disappointing and disastrous launches in the game industry to a fully realized universe sandbox experience. Sure you can laugh at them BUT in the end the vision and potential for such a project is something that should not die.

You are constantly getting stuff to do its almost overwhelming. I went to a site on my home planet (You can now build anywhere) to find buried technology only to find a crashed freighter (the size of my home town mind you) on my way. I stopped and got a salvage mission and while digging up the ships hull I feel into a cave containing "Sentient plants."

The plants gave me a giant pearl and after taking it I got into a 2 hour long chase when the sentinels (aka the NNMS police) instantly raised my wanted level for taking the pearl (it was very valuable). This was not a simple chase seen in GTA, this was a planet by planet chase which resulted in my hiding out in an unknown moon to wait out the authorities. This entire experience would not be possible in any other game.

I hated NMS at launch and I was furious with the excuses from Hello Games BUT I have to say I am impressed. They could have let it die HELL companies like EA and Actvision would have. I am so happy they didn't because NMS delivers an experience that I feel is absent in current games. The feeling of freedom and discovery.

i'm just giving this score to motivate the developers to give out more updates for the game, cause as much as i hate this game, because it has NO story and boring gameplay, at least they are still updating it and making it better with each update like no other developer i have ever seen and that by it self deserves a 10 because you know they will not stop until this game reaches to that value.

I'm not here to talk about what it was. But to talk about what it is NOW.
    Positive points:
    - Bast game exploration.
    - Very good ship control. Simple but effective (and other vehicles with the same good feeling).
    - Lots of hours of campaign.
    - Good crafting system (very similar to Subnautica).
    - The design is unique in every single thing. The Ships and the weapons are especially cool.
    - Coop is now a thing. Very easy to spend hours making missions or building together.

    Negative points:
    - The shooting system in first/third person is the weakest point (I'm not including ships, that is very good indeed), the enemies are always the same and their skills are quite boring too.
    - Although it was (a lot) improved, the performance in PC could be better.
    - The planets could look the same after several hours of playing (despite you can get surprised anyway).
    - Living beings could be better. Is very usual to see animals that look like a... well... a d**k.
    - Sometimes you have too many missions in your list.
    - The inventory can be very short at first, and annoying to manage.

I put a 10 only because I think this game's rating needs to be balanced. In my opinion, it deserves from 7 to 9. Depending on your taste in games.
If you didn't like it at first, give Hello Games a second chance. They truly deserve it, seriously.

It's 2020 and glad I ignored the early startup hate reviews. With all the latest updates, patches....this is one of the most immersive space games I've experienced. Endless hours, base building, crafting, ingame economy, multiplayer/coop. You do need at least 6G of ram with decent video card to get the full rendering experience effect without stuttering.

There has been some major updates since its release and most of the complaints below and what people want to be able to do in the game you can now do. This game is freaking awesome. There is no more money to spend once its been bought and the updates just keep coming.

No Man's Sky breaks the record in falling short of the hype – which is an incredible achievement in the category of super ambitious space games. The huge universe is a repetitive, lifeless and meaningless place, no amount of random generated creatures can change that. The most unforgivable fail is making the spaceship such a pain to fly, which makes exploring the vast universe simply a chore. However, at its best the game is epic and many of the issues should be easy to fix, so this might not be the end of the journey after all. [Sept 2016]

While some poorly designed systems and mechanics chip away at your patience, the feeling of flying seamlessly from space down to a peninsula you spotted from orbit never fails to enthrall. [Nov 2016, p.106]
