This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An Absolute Joy to Play

INTRO: I purchased No Man's Sky a little over a week ago, so I missed all the launch drama(though I am aware NMS had a rough launch). I started playing on v3.91 Leviathan. I've been gaming for over 20 years, and enjoy games from all genres.

SUMMARY(9/10): No Man's Sky(NMS) is the most fun I've had playing a video game in several years. I do see a few areas where it could be refined and improved, but for the most part, it's just a joy to play. And with the developer's apparent commitment to "finishing" the development, so to speak, I'm confident in saying that NMS will be on the future's lists of definitive games of this era.

CORE GAMEPLAY(10/10): At it's core, NMS is about exploration and adventure, and the scope of available content to explore is absolutely staggering. Means of transport include walking, limited flight(via Jetpack), using any of several terrestrial vehicles(including one walking armor suit, and one aquatic vehicle), Starship in-atmosphere flight, Starship interplanetary flight, and finally interstellar flight via either Starship or Freighters(there's also a fast travel system involving portals). Transitions between these different modes is masterfully executed, and nearly seamless(though those on slower PCs may notice some a tiny bit of latency in various transitions).

VISUALS(10/10): I put "visuals" here instead of "graphics" to make my intent clear: I'm including all visual effects depicted in the game under this section. I don't consider high resolution textures to be the end-all of visual presentation in video games. While, to the reader, this may seem like me "cheating" to give NMS a higher review score, I'd urge said reader to take a look at #virtualphotography of #NMS hashtags, on Twitter and elsewhere. While it's certainly true that not every location and planet in NMS is picturesque, the medium results in many truly beautiful vistas in spite of it's limitations. After all, they are effectively rendering entire star systems seamlessly, in a Universe of over 250 Galaxies. There are some obvious problems with level of detail that may very well be unsolvable with the current level of consumer hardware. I feel that this is completely forgivable. Keep in mind, NMS manages to achieve this feat with a meagre 12 GB install base.

SOUND/MUSIC(8/10): I've removed two marks here, one each for sound and music. On the subject of sound, I don't feel like there's anything missing, but I can't give a perfect score on a video game review unless there's something truly outstanding. On the subject of music, NMS similarly doesn't do anything that truly amazes me. The game has an embedded music player, but being that I'm not a music lover, I haven't explored it's capabilities in full.

COMBAT(9/10): Combat in NMS is simplified. As the game's focus is exploration and adventure, I can't fault them for this at all, but as stated before, since they're not doing anything particularly amazing in this category, I've removed a mark here. NMS includes aerial/space combat(these manifest as being nearly indistinguishable from each other), vehicular combat, and first person shooter combat mechanics. The bottom line is that you can still be killed by hostile entities, both in space and on a planetary surface, but that winning most battles will not be a challenge for more experienced players. This does include some variety of weapons, but none of them are particularly exceptional at changing the way the player approaches combat.

ADDITIONAL CONTENT(9/10): There's a massive chunk of additional content that is peripheral to the core gameplay. There's NPC settlement development/management, Freighter fleet management, economic management(running trade supplies), player base building, farming, animal husbandry, single- and multi-player mission types, mining, crafting, cataloguing the game world(you can name just about everything you discover, including stars, planets, moons, plants, animals, and minerals), and a whole separate seasonal game mode with special rules called "Expeditions". There's a ton of room for expanded content in this regard, and it seems the developer is still intent to do so. The player can also edit terrain at will during live gameplay, which includes leveling terrain, creating terrain, tunnelling/destroying terrain, restoring terrain, and in some cases even using the "Terrain Manipulator" to mine resource deposits.

    BEST GAME STUDIO....EVER!

In today's modern world of Greedy Game Goons, Hello Games has chosen to go the route of making a fun game with constant updates multiple times a year, instead of cash grabbing like every other studio does.

Instead of focusing on making money first, they focus their efforts on the fun of the game knowing that if they do their job and make a fun game, that the positive press will generate sales and therefore continued income.

    GRAPHICS
For a game released in 2016, the graphics hold up in the modern era whether it be the avatars outfit, a lush planet or your favorite spaceship. The art style of the game also matures with each update moving a bit away from the tron aesthetic seen early on in game to a more "realistic" sci-fi aesthetic.

    CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION
No Man's Sky allows for some reasonable character customization with a handful (not a ton) of outfits to collect and "heads" to choose from. The game does not have the depth of character customization found in some RPG's, but it works for the game. I would personally like to see character heads/faces created with facial customization and a swath of outfits to appeal to the role player. I also wish we could have custom avatar names for alts. I also wish we could have a character load screen with an alt character selector. Something you might see in WOW, ESO, New World, or any MMORPG. While No Man's Sky is not an MMO in the truest sense, it would be nice to have some of those RPG elements to give a greater appeal and connection to the avatar.

    GAMEPLAY
The game offers a myriad of playing styles from base building, exploring, ship combat, on foot combat, collecting items or achievements. Hardcore FPS players may not get their itches scratched, but chill players, base building/home making players and players who like to explore till their hearts content will be greatly satisfied.

    MONETIZATION
I kind of already covered this. But Hello Games only requires a box copy purchase of the game. At retail its a heck of a deal, on sale its a steal. You can get hundreds to thousands of hours of enjoyment and fun for the price of lunch for two or a dinner for 4. Hello Games has not charged a single penny for any update since 2016. I think the game has 27 updates now. That is a lot of content to create and share with the community for no additional cost.

In a world where an outfit in game can cost you $15.00, a mount can run $30.00, a house can easily hit $140.00 its refreshing to have a game studio like Hello games not always having their hand in the player pocket. They truly respect their customer base, can't say that about too many studios.

    MULTIPLAYER
Multiplayer is the weakest link in No Man's Sky. I play with my Lady most of the time and while we are able to group, work on each others homes (if you allow in your settings), and run quest together, sometimes the quest bug out and one of us can not complete it. We will have to drop group and do the quest again. This can get a bit annoying. But when you consider that Hello Games does not charge for a monthly service to update/maintain the server farm size necessary for MMORPG's to run and that the game overall is a sandbox, these shortcomings are easier to understand.

    CONCLUSION
If you crave flying a spaceship around on a planet, getting out of the ship and exploring, making a base, hanging out with friends/loves ones in game, engaging in an interesting story and a simple combat engagement (well, you can set your game settings much harder to make combat challenging if you like) then No Man's Sky is a great game. If you desire hard core pvp, this is probably not the best place to spend your money although there are PVP communities (you can turn PVP on in your settings), i have never engaged in it to know how good/bad it is.

    I give No Man's Sky 10/10

I'd like better combat and melee and ship interiors, but those caveats aside i really enjoy this game. I hope you can as well :)

    JOURNEY TO THE CORE

    BEFORE WE START:
No Man's Sky was developed and published by Hello Games and released in 2016. This title was released under completely adverse conditions compared to those presented at various conventions and fairs, and therefore, it was heavily criticized. After dozens of updates, the game became very similar to what was originally announced. The title has been fully released on Game Pass PC.

    THE TAKE OFF:
No Man's Sky, as a pure survival game, instantly throws the player into the clutches of a planet immersed in the infinite universe. This planet can randomly be peaceful or malevolent, making the first steps more or less challenging depending on the type. The initial stages mainly involve learning the basics of survival, as well as constructing a small personal base. After these steps, the player will be unleashed into the universe of the Atlas, a mysterious deity or legend that requires the player to reach the center of the universe. As an interlude, the player can literally explore endless planets, take on dozens of side missions, and build bases on planets or immense frigates.

    STALENESS UNIVERSE:
The gameplay of No Man's Sky is as varied as it is repetitive. In addition to the mere survival aspect of collecting resources, surviving in hostile planets, and fighting sentinels, players can venture into cooperative missions and raids on frigates and outposts. Furthermore, a small part of the game certainly involves space battles, albeit very simple ones. The true heart of the gameplay in this immense title lies in the exploration of thousands of planets, which often differ greatly, and the various space wrecks. A small mechanic that encourages exploration is the bestiary and encyclopedia of creatures and objects on the planets, offering small rewards in currency.

    WHAT COLOR IS THE SPACE?:
Graphically, it is rather average, with a wide variety of designs and coloration of the different worlds. Certainly, the imagination behind some plants and creatures is exceptional.

    SCATTERED ECHOES:
The audio component, like the graphics, is average. However, its great merit lies in creating extremely relaxing and mesmerizing situations, with fitting soundtracks for deep space.

    BUT WHY 7?

    PROS:
No Man's Sky is currently an extremely enjoyable and relaxing title to play and explore. The vastness and creativity of the game world rarely become tiresome, and the game's writing is unique and detailed, keeping the player engaged. Additionally, the main story, being very philosophical, will certainly stimulate the minds of the most imaginative players.

    CONS:
The major problem with No Man's Sky lies in the immense repetitiveness that it reaches within a few days of gameplay. Every space station, NPC, planetary base, frigate, and most dialogues will always and uniformly be the same. Moreover, the game's strong survival aspect often leads to tedious farming sequences for normal gameplay actions. All these factors make it a highly enjoyable game even today, but it certainly doesn't lack some issues dating back to its release.

    RATINGS:
    Gameplay: 6.5
    Music: 7.5
    Story: 7
    Survival: 6

A flawed game with great potential. The great sense of exploration is hampered by a lack of content - both in objects, animals, plants, and other humanoids. That said, the sheer ambition of the game is impressive, and although it falls short in nany ways, it is hard to find another space exploration settlement building game that is on this level.

One thing really surprised me, I remembered what the game looked like, when I started it for the first time in 5 years, I spawned on a cold planet at night with a beautiful sky. The game really became beautiful.

Looks like an excuse to make us play this game's main factor: crafting. If you like it, sure, It will be good. Otherwise, there is no reason to keep playing this game for too long.

As I said, in the beginning, everything is new and interesting. I liked to play this game with a friend, sharing my thoughts, and visiting his bases. The graphics are cool either, at least in 2.5k res. The gameplay in MK is washed, mainly on the starship. On dual sense works well.

You get patches of minerals dotted around but it's all very random, not how it would be found on a real planet (ie. a big mound of gold right next to a mound of copper). There's basically zero story and no voice acting. You spend all your time with your mining laser grinding plants and rocks then crafting them into more materials. You might also go into space to grind asteroids with your lasers. There's an occasional dogfight which can be quite frustrating. The gameplay loop is as boring as hell, it's all going towards a better spaceship, better mining laser, etc. I found myself desperately looking for fun things to do. It would be better if they added a proper story. I'd much rather have a single hand-crafted world with different biomes, cities, competing factions, interesting characters, quests, etc, than a zillion boring random planets with nothing going on. The game also runs like s**t; performance is terrible. Very disappointed. Expand

I'm really impressed and love the game and it so much fun discovering planets which always look different and are not repetitive.

    IMMERSION AND GAMEPLAY
    – The game overall is too unrealistic, too illogical and too childish. Just to mention some dumbest and most repulsive things in NMS: 1) your small backpack can contain more staff than the entire spacecraft; 2) similarly, some visually SMALL spacecrafts can fit more staff than BIGGER ones just because of so-called starship class and cargo upgrades; 3) in planet's ATMOSHERE your starship consumes fuel only to take off, but not during the flight (wtf?); 4) in space your starship can go backwards like a car, BUT this ONLY make's sense IF spaceship has the proper movable thrusters to reverse spaceship's direction, but starships in NMS DON'T.
    – Space is too unrealistic, too colorful and too cartoonish as well. Planets are always unrealistically close to each other. 95% of planets are very rich in life forms, which makes them soon enough boring and repetitive, as the procedural generation algorithm seems to work the same on most planets. In real life it's the opposite - rich planets are extremely rare and that's what makes them so precious and magnificent.
    – Stars (suns) in systems are just unreachable sprites. You cannot reach them and burn yourself down as in Elite Dangerous.
    – But guess what you CAN do in this game... You can breed, select and ride some stupid Spore-like animals. You can basically have any animal as your campanion which would pleasantly go after you in any harsh environment that require you to wear an exosuit (!) It's not No Man's S-K-Y now! It's a f*cking Spore.
    – Spaceship dogfights with pirates get boring and annoying pretty quickly, so you only want to end them asap.
    – I'm not saying NMS should be as realistic as Elite Dangerous but neither for 5-year-olds.

    MULTIPLAYER
    – Playing with friends is a nightmare, because you cannot invite them to the party from the menu. You should find them in person IN GAME. And it's not always easy to do, because even if you are at the same location, you are not always going to see each other. Moreover, it's easy to lose them from the party for no reason or when they get too far. Besides there is actually not much to do together. OK, there IS an option to join your friend's world instantly from the menu, but it never works in my case. Generally speaking, the game just wasn't meant to play together from the beginning, and that's very noticeable.
    – Developers could have created an awesome simulation in a living galaxy with real players, an economy, cohesive missions and so on... with a few main planets with some headquarters of guilds or something like that and so players could build their own cities. If someone wouldn't want to interact with other players, they could still fly away to some uninhabited far far away planet. Instead we have 256 galaxies with trillions boring procedurally generated planets with almost no chance finding another player. Players spread all over the worlds doing their senseless sh*t. What's the point in such multiplayer? None. There is only one way to randomly meet a real player and even many players - in Expeditions, because all players start on the same planet and have similar missions and routes, and that's great, but that's another problem...

    EXPEDITIONS
    – Expeditions are like small events with some new added staff and some kind of quests with rewards after completing them.
    – So, to me, expeditions are the most boring and pointless addons in my game experience ever. First of all, you have to start a new game in a new save to begin the expedition. So till now, you would have had 9 save games with some progress in each, but none complete with all the content the game provides (unless you have literally no other interests in life). No sense to me.
    – Expeditions bring no cohesive lore quests nor fun. Just random missions like find/kill 10 creatures, build some new random buildings which developers added or travel somewhere for no reason. That's exactly what Expeditions are in a nutshell. Ok, sometimes you get some cool rewards when you complete the expedition, but my God, how boring and pointless it is to make it to the end.

    SUMMARY
No Man's Sky had huge potential but unfortunately went in the wrong direction. The main problem the game has is there are too many unnecessary and half-done features, while important ones (as for the planets and cosmos exploration game) are too weak or not implemented at all. It's still a decent meditative sand-box time killer, rather for single player unfortunately, which gets quite repetitive (especially if you start new games because of new Expeditions). If you don't like Minecraft-like gameplay, this game is not for you at all. After 184 hours spent in the game, I have only one regret – this journey might have been much more interesting and epic.

It is 2022. September 6th. After over 200 hours into the game and 6 years of playing this game I can only say...man what a ride.
    In the Beginning:
Hello Games said "This is going to be the biggest and Best multiplayer space exploration game EVER Created!" It was the biggest Space exploration game ever created, and that was true. Still is. However, through many of the scary and crazy fan expectations brought on by pressure from the ad markets and the hype train caused by the trailer and the almost pushed-upon promises, the game was released...with less than half of it finished. It had a vast, beautiful, and atmospheric universe...With nothing in it, except bugs.
If it ended there, I would not be writing this in 2022.
After bad scores, and a flood and just the internet and world being extremely toxic, Hello Games has done what almost no game company had done before or since. (Besides CD Project Red with CyberPunk 2077) Hello games got to work, and went Dark.
Fast Forward almost a year or so and they came out with patch after patch, then an expansion. It added and fixed a LOT. But not enough for some people.
Then another few months, and ANOTHER expansion and patches all throughout.
They began talking again, taking user reviews and suggestions, and fixing their game. It took until now, and I know they are not done, but their game has undergone hundreds of patches or more and 20 of those were named updates. All for Free. Everything promised is now in the game. plus more. Multiplayer in an interesting way, a story, actually there's even side stories now. a player hub, freighters, base building in space, underwater etc...It still seems like there is a long way to go, though they are right now sitting at patch 3.99.1 as of August 19th. It will be releasing on Switch in October. I feel there is another Huge update coming from them soon with how things are going with more space customization. There is also many more modes to play, like permadeath, survival, creative, and Expeditions, which are completely multiplayer where you start out in the same place as everyone else at the same time. Plus you have co op as well. At it's core it is still the same game, so i would love more events to happen, actual NPC bad guys that have ground and space/air battle tactics, and something huge to happen. Even just bigger space wars, pirate groups and real factions added so the aliens feel more like they are a group. So like cities and the like. Did I mention you can become a mayor of a small settlement? No? Well you can lol and also send your fleet off to do missions. yes. Fleet. All in all I will give it a 9 because, Well Done Hello Games.

This game when first released I would of gave it a 1. Yea it was just a boring game with a ton of problems. BUT since then Hello Games (The developer) has gone above and beyond to make this game fun. They have added so much content SO MUCH content that was promised and it's there now. I have traveled the universe with friends and it works well, able to connect directly to them join in help with a pirate fight, and help build their bases yes bases on planets that you can set as your own. traveled to places where people have become communities and built whole cities. It's fantastic and mysterious. The game has a lot more to offer with ships, weapons, alien types, NPC's, sentinel enemies, and even worlds. The game is now an 8 on my scale and it deserves it. I have fun hopping on every once in a while and exploring a new planet its just the type of game you can do that with. Its still not perfect but there really is not a game like it out there and exploring is one of the top things I enjoy.

Still, Hello Games has proved that it learned from its wrongings back in 2016. The game now has a very good crafting system, more stuff to explore, different worlds, machines and a solid multiplayer with a very interesting lore.

I honestly see more potential in the game, in regards to combat and exploration. When "villages" were announced, I thought we could see eventually some abandoned cities, or that developing your own village would be "easy" and quite productive. Instead it's just a timing system, over and over, and exploration hasn't changed much.

In regards to combat, the sentinels doesn't put much of a threat on you, so many of the combats upgrading you do in your multitool are essentially useless. Space combat could evolve to become something I could describe as Star-Wars-ish, instead, any battle you face has 6-12 ships maximum that can be easily beaten in normal difficulty.

It's a very fun game and, if it's your type of game - exploration, crafting and all - then you'll spend some hours here. If not, just go play other thing.

The game is getting better with each update. How much has come out this year. Most of all I like the study of systems and construction. In principle, if you discard some of the mechanics of the game, then this is the only thing you can do here, someone does not like sandboxes, someone does not understand what to do in this game at all. But there is also a plot and various secondary missions that will not let you get bored and help you figure out the game faster.

Build your base or even an entire settlement. No, I'm not talking about settlements that you can manage (yeah, and this appeared this year). I mean, you have the opportunity to build a large base, as if it were a small settlement. Build in the air (I have seen beautiful examples), underground, under water - yes, even all at once. You can equip your space cargo ship, fill it with interesting starships. Honestly, you can describe this game for a very long time. I'm glad I got to know her, it's a pity it was so late and I didn't find the early times (and no matter how dark they were).

It is sad to see that nobody bother to bring justice to NMS after all those years of great free content updates and even more promised on the way.
Yeah it was not what was promised back at the beginning but this score here in metacritic is not what the game is now

In 2016, most of the story was told by readable lores, distributed on planets. The only traditional “mission” in the game was The Atlas Path. I don’t remember how we got introduced to it, but people were already referring to the “mission” as “The Atlas Path”. Back in the day, we didn’t have the mission log, which is why I don’t remember how we got that name for it. The story was OK since it was mostly lore. Because of the thin story, I was actually quite attached to it, and even more attached to the story told through the Atlas Path and the associated Atlas Interfaces.

In mid-August 2017, I was already done with the Atlas Path (I finished it in December 2016). That gave me one single reward as well as an epic event that we still don’t really understand today. In the month of August, developers at Hello Games reworked the entire story (and added a bunch of fetch quests), and they kept doing it until 2022. Currently, the story is a weird patchwork of things we mostly knew in 2016 and it feels more like a long tutorial… Also, whether you are a newcomer or an old-timer trying to resume a playthrough; whether you play in “Creative Mode” or in “Normal Mode”; the storytelling doesn’t branch coherently.

Here’s an example for bug that has been around since 2017: Early in the game, a character will ask you about another character’s whereabouts, even though you haven’t met anyone yet. That same character will also explain to you that nothing changed in their space station, even though this is your first visit ever.

Such problems in storytelling feel immersion-breaking to me, and there are many of them during the entire game.

    ***

Community Management is next to non-existent, and developers keep changing the ways to play the game (also called “gameplay mechanics”), which often deprecate players’ play style and add bugs to other unaddressed bugs.

In 2016, again, the game was really simple. Too simple for some, but quite good to me, honestly. There was nothing much to be shared by developers, aside from Patch Notes that were explaining fixes or little improvements to the game. The game was difficult to master, but it was fun.

Soon after the release, they started adding things that were not even supposed to be part of the game, like the base building. I know this might be surprising to learn that base building wasn’t initially part of the “sale pitch”, but I invite you to look for that information on the Internet.

Progressively, each game update became a stressful event that could potentially change rules players were used to. I also have to mention that bugs were also a thing, but at least we had good support from developers through their ZenDesk account. I opened a few tickets, and most of them got closed at some point.

In mid-August 2017, developers at Hello Games made their first big update, called “Atlas Rises”, which reworked the story entirely (as I previously wrote) and had a major impact on my playthrough. The update introduced bugs and incongruities that are still present today. The most important problem (to me) is that the people who had previously completed the only mission of the game (The Atlas Path) had to redo it entirely, especially because of the new rewards tied to its completion. In 2022, the “bug” is still present for whoever plans to load an old save from 2016 (or from the first half of 2017).

Since late 2017 / 2018, developers are not closing ZenDesk tickets anymore, and they keep releasing game updates with new features that nobody ever asked. Free updates are nice, but they are bittersweet because a lot of old bugs are still unaddressed years after their appearance. Also, a lot of people complained when developers changed the way farming (which wasn’t announced in 2016) would work, or when they introduced energy consumption that broke existing built bases. Finally, in 2019, developers switched a core component of their game engine (an “API”) from one technology to a more modern one, which made the game literally unplayable for existing players who had very old computers. In 2022, those people still have to buy a new graphic card (or even a new computer) to play the game they bought between 2016 and 2019. What other game did that, I wonder?

The story that was OK in 2016 is now annoying and acts as a tutorial instead of a proper story. The gameplay and the level of communication between the players and the developers are regularly changing without any explanation and without any acknowledgement that they are effectively disrupting player’s enjoyment of a full-priced game. Those two arguments demonstrate that No Man’s Sky isn’t a finished game, and I think that anyone who’s thinking about buying this game, even in 2022, should be well aware of the situation.

    - cant align landing zone or old type of elements with new one. It could not fit totally but should be option to start a specially when there is no way to place building director desc in old style components
    - starting fuel logic - dumb idea. There is tech to refuel from air but still dumb. With this logic i should not park ship at all and use parachute and get into ship when its flying.
    - no flying smaller vehicles. I dont like any of them. Usually even hovering vehicle destroying environment. Environment is respawning but aesthetics is one of the best part of this game. There is no option to plant some rocks, trees with planet biome elements - but could be.
    - no galaxy radar everywhere, chaotic menus, descriptions, no details about missions -
    - not futuristic solutions like - manual harvest of base plants, limited inside cabin view
    - cannot upgrade freighters - one way portal - why?
    - there is many procedural planets - but so many similar - numbers/records are little pointless without good searching/sorting solutions. Every planet hasnt even one city. They could be as restricted static areas and dockable.
    - every space station interior is the same.
    - storage logic - dumb - multiplayer like

also fun fact this game is the reason why Sony hasn't had any early access games for years and Sean Murray tried to weasel and say that Sony was responsible for not giving him enough funding. VP of Sony of America denied this and called it false.

I remember playing Privateer in the early 90s and being blown away by its size and diversity of planets and stations, etc. Back then I thought that in a few decades games like that would be so massive that you cant even explore them anymore because you wouldnt be able to live long enough.
No Mans Sky promised that. Instead of that we got... well we all know.
I threw it away. But then

I threw it away. But then after a few years suddenly reports of it having improved trickled in. That the devs are massively patching it and adding all that was promised.

So I got it out again and after a few hours realized its still the same boring game that doesnt make sense in many ways, doesnt have a real story or a goal, still only has maybe 12 different planets that are spread across the galaxy in tiny variations, still feels dead and sterile, still has crappy space mechanics, still has intelligent life everywhere, yet you never see planets with cities or a civilization, AKA simply makes NO sense whatsoever.
IDK why people say that and the ratings reflect that, because its still a very bad and uninteresting game. I dont know a single person who likes that game even in its current state, yet reviews are really good nowadays.
Thats BS, and I think those reviews are bought.

The sound design I liked, but I missed voice acting from a title that famous.

The game is poorly optimised. I have a pretty good, new rig, and I have micro stutters the whole time I am playing.

As for the UI/UX? Oh my.. That was one of the main issue for me, and it is why I just unistalled it after 1 hour. Even with the help of the tutorial I was lost in the interface. Maybe the problem is with me, but I felt frustrated the whole time I was playing, because of it.

The other main reason why I just quit/uninstalled it so soon was that I just didn't care about the whole setup. Usually I like space themed games.. Maybe that is an understatement. I LOVE most of them. However with this one I just couldn't connect, and didn't find any fun playing it. I felt all task a chore. Go there, mine that, create that. I can't explain, cause a lot of game has this kind of objectives, and deliver fun moments. However for me, not this one.

I don't want to write about how misleading was the marketing 5 years ago. That is the past, I don't care about that.

However, I played it recently, and I can say for sure, that the developers have done a mega job, in releasing updates and fixing this game, however it might be too late by now...

The optimization is NOT good on this game, The game suffers from stuttering issues for me, even though I have a decent specs.

The graphics don't get progressively better at higher settings which they should. Even on lower settings the game looks fine, so turning up the settings for little to no gain in graphics while halving your performance.

The tutorial portion of this game is an insane chore and doesn't feel engaging at all, it becomes very tiring, very soon, when you have to find sodium which is spread who knows where on a planet, this "tutorial" never seems to end, and no, it didn't help me the story a single bit, I had to go on to the wiki to learn about the different characters. There is no clear line in between the tutorial and the actual story of the game, and it doesn't help when the game seemingly decides itself about what mission you are going to play, you interact with an object and it adds another mission to the list and changes your current objectives, this is very obnoxious.

Gameplay wise, the game is exactly what initial reviewers suggested, Minecraft but in space, and I am not complaining at all. It is fun to explore different planets and there moons just for the view. Finding materials can be a chore since you don't have an economy outpost scanner or whatever its called installed in your ship.

The saving mechanics of this game are very poorly designed, I still can't figure out how to manual save properly, there have been times where I've exited the game only to find out later that I've lost a huge amount of progress and all that copper that I gathered.

The crafting is absolutely horrible in this game, trying to construct a basic house feels like bashing your head into a concrete wall, twice. The game can't figure out that a floor is meant to be in contact with the ground, the flattening tool doesn't work, expanding areas in a ship lead to weird structures hanging in mid-air, the inventory management is absolutely broken, there is absolutely zero sense in how the game calculates the amount of storage you have. On top of all of that, the game is insanely hard to play on mouse and keyboard.

This idea is amazing, but it managed to amaze me and disappoint me at the same time. But honestly, no matter how much the developers try to update this game, its now far too late, and the gaming community has generally lost interest in this, like what is happening with Cyberpunk 2077.

No Man's Sky breaks the record in falling short of the hype – which is an incredible achievement in the category of super ambitious space games. The huge universe is a repetitive, lifeless and meaningless place, no amount of random generated creatures can change that. The most unforgivable fail is making the spaceship such a pain to fly, which makes exploring the vast universe simply a chore. However, at its best the game is epic and many of the issues should be easy to fix, so this might not be the end of the journey after all. [Sept 2016]
