10/10 in every way. Beautiful game aesthetically, Some cool dialog and many upgrades that are challenging to get and many achievements to achieve although many of them aren't hard.

Yes, it was a painfully average game at launch, but the improvement is real. This game needs some grace from the backlash only salty metacritic gamers can bring upon a game

This game is exactly what the developer said it would be, you have a huge galaxy to explore with limitless variations, The fact that you name every planet and animal you find is just incredible,The game is randomly generated and looks stunning.

Ignore all the bad reviews from gamers with no imagination looking for a cod style shoot em up in space, base building promised in free updates.

So, going to begin with a bit of a pre-amble to all of this. I created an account just to write a review for this game. My computer's specs are as follows:

    GPU: GTX 970M
    RAM: 16GB

*If you can't tell from the HQ I have a laptop, specifically a MSI Ghost Pro GS60.*

Let us start with a review of the game now:

    PROS:
    - Open ended exploration
    - Variety (Although a tad bit shallow)
    - SPACE
    - Technical Marvel

    CONS:
    - Some poor framerate
    - Hitches every now and again
    - Can be a bit repetitive

Ok, so there is the PROS/CONS in my opinion. The game is fun to me however, it scratches the itch of "What is over the horizon" or "I wonder what is in this system". The game is much more feature complete than Elite Dangerous is even currently and honestly is more fun, again this is just my opinion. I think so much of the straight up "Was lied to about multiplayer" and "DON'T BUY GAME IS TRASH" reviews are either blind hate, which is really understandable or just a troll. The game is a thing of beauty and at the same time so ugly. I think that given about a month or so it can become even more than what it already is.
One last thing is this, the game was developed by 15 people. No that doesn't excuse issues within the game but they are working on it as fast as they can. The devs at Hello Games do care about the game and the community and are trying. Remember that they are people too. Anyways, happy flying!

    TLDR;

    - If you like exploration/sim games, pick it up. You will love it! If not, wait a bit for a sale and get it later or just go play another game.

Recommendations: Rainbow 6 Siege, Starbound, Stellaris, really any other game that you fancy.

Game crashed when I first tried it. Went in and turned off something called G-sync I believe it was, and the game ran fine after that. Actually a pretty fun game after putting about 10 hours or so into it. Lots of things to keep you occupied and not yet repetitive. Overall though, not worth $60.

All I see on reviews are people experiencing startup issues or people who expected more than an exploration survival game. Go into this thinking 3D Starbound. I am having a ton of fun. Yes planets are all on "biome" but its not just flat boring. I had caves and canyons. There is always something nearby to go discover. I have a real hard time understanding what people expected vs what they are complaining about. This game is exactly as i imagined it and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. I don't need a quest or my hand held to tell me what to do. This game doesn't leave you completely helpless. There are plenty of guidance hints given and always a marker to move you forward in your progress or next step/item. I know I'm not the only one saying this but if you do your research and are still interested, play this game and ignore the bad reviews. The only reason i'm not giving this a 10 is because I don't feel I've played this game enough to say its PERFECT 10 STELLAR but I am definitely enjoying myself and going back for more. The ultra negative reviews are frankly, shameful, this is one of the best sci-fi space trading games to come out in a very long time indeed. Those giving the game less than a 7, have either no idea how to play this kind of game. Or worse are doing so because they get off on libel. I suspect its a bit of both. Don't listen to the hate filled rubbish on steam and meta-lie. This is a Gem of a game.

I adore this game, but it isn't for everyone. I benefited from not seeing much of the pre-release trailers.

After a few hours locations begin to repeat themselves. After several hours you'll start bypassing locations you already 'know'. And the same eventually becomes true of planets. But there isn't a game that offers what NMS does, for the first dozen-or-so hours of play-time.

Hopefully 'Hello Games' will release more locations, more generative mini-quests, and more easter-eggs to keep things enticing, as well as increased optimisation and unlock PC-options to, for example, heftily increase pop-in distances. Mods are already on the scene, and the modding community will probably 'finish' the game before anyone else does.

Storage managment and the know of what to keep and what to not keep/mining is a big part too, as you have limited space in both suit/backpack and ship, but you can always send stuff from yourself to the ship, but not the other way if you are too far away from the ship. (but you can discard stuff from the ship wile you are away from it )

Yes, there is a lot missing in the game, but I still enjoy the content so far.
If you like games like Journey, then NMS may be one you like too.

[*] Very big in a relatively small way
    [*] Beautiful
[*] no handholding gameplaywise. You will have to figure stuff out yourself
[*] In the beginning it will be more scrounging for parts and resources but later on you will have the 'exploration experience'
[*] You will have to immerge yourself, it will not do it for you.

While I can certainly sympathize with those who have technical issues with the game I can't subscribe to the point of view that this is in any way a bad game. The gameplay is paper thin, and this is disappointing, but the game has been about exploration and it still delivers on that promise. NMS is Minecraft in space, or at least that is how I think of it. If you liked playing Minecraft and just exploring then you'll most likely enjoy NMS...because that is what you do. NMS just has more variety of animal and plant life, and some of the vistas are, in my opinion, breathtaking.

Don't go in to NMS expecting a combat experience of the like of Elite because that's not what the game is. NMS is a sandbox game where you make your story.

Personally, I can't wait to see what the next planet has to offer. That's why I'd recommend NMS.

The sophistication and inner ethics will probably not appeal to the impatient or angry who are bent on ever increasing levels of domination, destruction and gore. So, if it has one fault, it is because it is an adult experience, not a teen adventure. However, I think it will eventually develop into a classic because people will eventually realize what the authors are trying convey; an encounter with the mysterious. In this it eminently succeeds. I have personally cancelled this game twice prior, and had only ordered the game last Friday. I received the PS4 copy, and purchased a PC copy as well after having played the game.

What a treat! This is a beautiful game that expands the horizon of whatever current technology can offer, or had been able to offer anyway. As you delve into the game, you begin to realize just how massive this game is. To be able to simply fly off in space and go to any star, is simply out of the world. The diversity in plants, animals, weather, technology, etc, I can't believe only a few people worked on this game. What a feat.

The colors in this game are amazingly well done. Hard to believe that they are randomly generated. The music and sound is even better. I imagine they are triggered by the type of environment you encounter, and the sound of grass rustling, sea breeze, and everything else is simply amazing.

Most importantly, the amazing experience this game delivers can't be put into words. Thank you Sean and the team for delivering us the game of this generation. We hope to see more of you.

After coming off Dark Souls series, FTL and a hundred other games that just want to face f--k you, No Man's Sky is a pleasure. I did not follow the hype, and I hate survival games, but I love this.

A little preface: my father recently passed away and of course, there is a lot of guilt and regret that follows the death of a parent. When I discovered that I can name planets, animals, galaxies and so on, I started naming everything after my dad or, "is he here?" "Planet Dad" and so on. In a sense, my trip through the galaxy becomes an epic journey to connect with my father on some level, even though I can't. In my mind, he is literally one planet or galaxy ahead of me, and since the game is "endless" I can continue to mourn and play.

Besides this unforeseen positive effect, the game is marvelous. You can't die (well, you can, but it's highly unlikely), the music is a delight and it runs like a polished game should (even though it has many rough edges). Besides, when was the last time you took a moment to relax and just stare into the distance once you've ascended a giant mountain. No game has kept me this captivated and content.

10/10 would play for therapy again.

There are still parts of the game (portals) that the community has not figured out yet. It is pretty cool and a new take on how to play an exploration game for me.

OK. To start things off I was extremely excited for this game. The Hype was real. Did it stand up to it though? Personally I feel like this game is a breath of fresh air. From a medium overly saturated with shoot em' ups and developers who obviously really wanted to make a movies, and developers that treat its consumers as incompetent children who need their hand held at all times, I am over joyed to see a game like this release. YES, its missing content, YES, features got cut. that's just what happens in most forms of entertainment. for example movies will shoot these big expensive scenes that may not make the final cut. things like this happen all the time. Sean is the head programmer for the game, this is his baby. He doesn't want for people to be disappointed and angry. He is a much more genuine guy then people seem to give him credit for.

Is Sean deserving of death threats and hate over this? absolutely not. I 100% believe that when he told interviewers and also us as consumers that there would be X feature and Y feature, HE MEANT IT. He is not some evil man maniacally laughing with a wad of cash from his "lies".

All in all i personally enjoy the game and have put more than 50 hours into it so far. [planning on playing some more even tonight :)] Although I can also see why people would be upset and angry because the game may not have lived up to their expectations, and how could it? The things some people were expecting just aren't what this game is about. Sean made it very clear in the interviews closer to release on what the game was and wasn't. He even made a post on the games website on what to expect. So the insinuation of "lies" is absurd.

Aside from that, I'd like to be able to own multiple ships.

I think they should all people to be able to build or implement their own: Base, Home, City, Trade Port; even being able to store ships and massive battleships.

Alien Races could be in massive interstellar wars and players could pick and choose sides to support; even altering the aliens influence in their home systems. This would also be a reasonable way to implement PvP.

It's a lot of work that the Dev's can do to improve and make this one of the best games ever. Just don't expect it to happen overnight.

The game fills a niche in VR that's largely missing. Most VR games are short or gimmicky. As a result of being a deep, immersive game first and having VR added later, No Man's Sky is the kind of VR game you can play until the weight of your headset gives you a headache. This game gives me a sense of wonder I haven't felt from a video game in years. Landing on a planet and discovering it has an environment unlike any you've landed on thus far is always a thrilling discovery. The VR controls are also really great. Rather than taking the Bethesda strategy of mapping buttons to the VR controller, No Man's Sky opts for Star Trek style gesture controls. You access your tools and inventory with contextual holograms on your exosuit's wrists. You fly your ship by grabbing its throttle with one hand and flight stick with the other. It all feels organic and *real* in a way that Skyrim and Fallout VR don't. The only reason I don't give this game a 10 is that the story is very utilitarian in nature. It's primary purpose is to walk you through the staggering number of game mechanics in a pace that isn't overwhelming. And it's enough. You won't be riding an emotional rollercoaster, but that okay because the game is focusing on what it does best. For my money, this is the best exploration game on the market, period, and far and away the best VR game. Expand

The method of the story in this is intersting, you go looking for information on planets rather than being hand held through a lienar story, you pick up bits of information slwoly drawing the picture of the univierse and what has gone before.

The trading system is a bit of a mess and I hope that gets some love in the future but it is not essential to progression and the ship looks could do with some customise options.

It could also do with more content to help pass the time sometimes but they have a fairly good base game to build something wonderful on, I'm looking forward to see what they and the modding community does with this.

Bitter nerd rage is common on game releases these days but boy is it over the top for this one. I think it was mostly caused by the inexperience of the developer suggesting features before knowing for certain they could include them at release. Hopefully they'll learn from this and give a lot less information in the future and also be able to include them in future patches..

I can only agree that No Man's Sky needs a lot more work to be a masterpiece, though I cannot help but think that the game is still an incredible achievement, and I'm actually glad I bought it. I love to find that somehow special planet among all the other ones. I love the experience of being the first person ever to discover that particular planet. But perhaps that's just who I am - NMS makes me want to do stuff just for the sake of doing them.

The game just somehow went from overhyped to underpreciated in few days. It's a really good game that had an extremely blown out marketing. That pulled in a lot of people that weren's supposed to be its target, which results in a lot of criticism - some justified, some just extremely toxic and unnecessary.

I'm not giving this game a max grade because of two things - as I said, even though I enjoy the game, some aspects of it are really poorly executed. I hope that sonner or later the developers will come up with something to make the game more deep. I enjoy trading, crafting, fighting, learning languages - but I'd like to have more reasons to do so, or some more mechanics to delve into.

The second thing is the price. Way too high for any game, really. I bought Witcher 3 for a lot less in a cool box with map, stickers and plenty of stuff. I don't see anything about NMS that would justify being more expensive.

Others finding enjoyment in what the game has to offer. One easy way to put this is that this game is not for everyone, it definitely appeals to a specific group of people, People looking for a exciting space shooter with tuns of depth and story should be looking into other games. People who are looking for a very open and atmospheric game with a beautiful art style and endless possibilities will enjoy this game. No Man's Sky doesn't have a set story,Missions or much interaction with the NPC's in it's world and that can ruin part of the game for people but for others who just want to explore the world and enjoy it at there own pace it's fine. I've spent most my time in No Man's Sky going from planet to planet seeing how the weather, systems and other things can have huge factors on what the wild life and plant life was like, also naming everything and making as much money as possible for later in the game. Going from one planet with huge mushrooms and flying eel to another with rolling hills of red grass and massive trees without loading screens and smoothly is something I've wanted to do in a video game for a long time.
Some things No Man's Sky has to offer are up-gradable multi-tool's that you can build to your liking, also have space ships you can customize to be built for fighting ships or mining. Finding a ship with lots of slots and building it up into your dream ship is extremely satisfying and once you start exploring the universe with it you feel like something out of a sci fi movie or novel.
Overall if you enjoy open world games and have the urge to just explore the universe at your leisure you will have fun with this game, But remember I look at this game as something to play after a day of work or something to relax with, you can sit back and just enjoy the stars.

The Exploration in NMS can somtimes feel a bit boring as there are only 18 types of planets. The fauna makes up for this with diversity and intersing flying snake like creatures? All in all a fun game to play with friends. Expand

Despite the fact, that the game started a bit raw, Hello Games continued releasing big updates like Next or Beyond and improving the game. Nowdays it looks very good, many new and interesting features have been added since then.

Many good updates made the game into a better game. It's good. The only thing to criticise is that it has some (but not many bugs in it).

It is sad to see that nobody bother to bring justice to NMS after all those years of great free content updates and even more promised on the way.
Yeah it was not what was promised back at the beginning but this score here in metacritic is not what the game is now

    - moving elements from place to place is destroying element behind that element
    - cant align landing zone or old type of elements with new one. It could not fit totally but should be option to start a specially when there is no way to place building director desc in old style components
    - starting fuel logic - dumb idea. There is tech to refuel from air but still dumb. With this logic i should not park ship at all and use parachute and get into ship when its flying.
    - no flying smaller vehicles. I dont like any of them. Usually even hovering vehicle destroying environment. Environment is respawning but aesthetics is one of the best part of this game. There is no option to plant some rocks, trees with planet biome elements - but could be.
    - no galaxy radar everywhere, chaotic menus, descriptions, no details about missions -
    - not futuristic solutions like - manual harvest of base plants, limited inside cabin view
    - cannot upgrade freighters - one way portal - why?
    - there is many procedural planets - but so many similar - numbers/records are little pointless without good searching/sorting solutions. Every planet hasnt even one city. They could be as restricted static areas and dockable.
    - every space station interior is the same.
    - storage logic - dumb - multiplayer like

One of the last "good" devs.

yes they lied to us but they deliverd! compare them to CDProject red.
CDPR gets all the hype of how they fixed Cyberpunk because of the Anime, yet these guys still work to this day and make free big content updates for us.

One of the best game ever created. It had the worst start ever in gaming history and it now is a real masterpiece you can spend hours on. I don't usually like survival games but this one is amazing.

The game runs really well now, it offers regular updates, has a nice story but gives the freedom it promised. The galaxy is massive and you can't discover everything in your life! I'm really impressed and love the game and it so much fun discovering planets which always look different and are not repetitive.

This game is great, in terms of gameplay, updates, there is a story. No Man's Sky breaks the record in falling short of the hype – which is an incredible achievement in the category of super ambitious space games. The huge universe is a repetitive, lifeless and meaningless place, no amount of random generated creatures can change that. The most unforgivable fail is making the spaceship such a pain to fly, which makes exploring the vast universe simply a chore. However, at its best the game is epic and many of the issues should be easy to fix, so this might not be the end of the journey after all. [Sept 2016]

While some poorly designed systems and mechanics chip away at your patience, the feeling of flying seamlessly from space down to a peninsula you spotted from orbit never fails to enthrall. [Nov 2016, p.106]
