This game Broke me, it was a Emotional Rollercoaster maybe more Heartbreaking than Nier Automata, it is one of the best games i have played this year, The music was even better, even if it was just a pre recording from the OG Nier with a few renditions and new soundtracks ( Especially the Mermaid Episode ) but i can sense Keiichi Okabe really outdone himself on this remake , Story is so well written and so is the characters, just Yoko Taro writing at its best

if you're a fan of Automata definitely get this if you're in for the lore on what happen at Automata , or if you're a fan of Yoko Taro's Work Definitely Get this

The only negative on this game i can find will be on others perspective on this , The Game loops itself to get all Endings, which will turn off for some people especially from new comers trying out a Yoko Taro Game which is very common on his previous works, but if you get pass that Loops you will get one of the best narratives in gaming or JRPG / RPG in general

I know it's a Remake or Remaster but it's my Game of the Year this 2021, It Just that Good

( Drakengard Remake/Remaster next please Yoko Taro huhuhu )

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nier replicant 1.22 is a video game remake of Nier replicant from 2010. The game was directed by Yoko Taro who directed Drakengard 1 and 3 and supervised Drakengard 2 and is the creator of the Nier franchise.

The story of Nier replicant 1.22 is a well-thought-out story, but with lacking background in the game. The story builds from Drakengard ending E where Angelus and Caim enters a world similar to ours. However, it is not necessary to play Drakengard to enjoy Nier. The story does however fall somewhat as the plot twist is what makes the story deeper than the average Hero story. Together with extra material after ending A and B makes the story more interesting following as more information is uncovered for the player.

The characters are fun and interesting part of the game. They add flavour with each other’s personality as they complement each other. They motivate each other and has fun dialogue with each others. Kaine’s intense and foul-mouthed personality together with Emil’s shy and kind-hearted or Kaine and Grimoire Weiss insulting each makes the game funnier and more interesting to play.

The music of the game is overall good, with some pieces better than others. One of the better music pieces in the game is Shadowlord. Where the music becomes more intense as the boss fight goes on, causing the flow of the battle in increase. Another well done music piece is the end credits song which has well organized with its instrument and vocals working together to create a melodious music piece.

The gameplay of Nier is in my opinion the most boring part of the game. The game combat is average at best, thanks to the magic you can use in the game. The game otherwise a normal hack and slash game where you cut down enemies with different weapons such as swords or spears.

Many will surely be disappointed with the lack of the older main protagonist from NieR Gestalt which was the western version of Replicant. However you can get him as a skin in the game for those that feel nostalgic.

NieR Replicant shines in it’s story. It’s a gripping tale of a brother trying to save his sister that will tug on many hearts. For those who enjoyed NieR Automata’s story and never played this one, this game is a must have. But it’s important to expect the same dull side questing that both the original and Automata had, featuring little to no in-depth story for those you help along the way.

Now on to the state of the PC port. It’s clear that Yoko Taru’s team need to work a lot on their PC ports. With limited graphical settings and the lack of V-Sync is a constant reminder that PC is always on the backseat for this franchise. However they did better than Automata, featuring borderless-windowed mode, better mouse & keyboard support and more, it’s just unfortunate this game could end up being another modding project to smooth out the quirks.

From sudden FPS drops down to the single digits once every hour or so, to the mouse constantly being in the center of the screen while using a controller, it’s still an enjoyable experience for those willing to keep up with it. I will however recommend to either wait for an official patch or a modders patch to fix the current issues with the port.

firstly, i have not played the original version of this game, nor do i intend to. however i can already tell, that this remake was too faithful. what do i mean by that you ask? well, there are so many issues and oversights which were from the original game, which should have been fixed, but weren't. while i dont expect every complaint i have to have been fixed, there are some really annoying gameplay elements which i really wish were changed or altered in some way. considering this is a remaster, a lot of the problems i have with this game should not be here.

anyway before we get onto the full game, lets discuss the pc port itself. for the most part, i experienced very few bugs and glitches. that being said, the game was not completely sterile. infact there was one bug which was apparent right from the start and, boy, its a big one. the classic, "we tied your movement speed to your frame rate, and forgot that the PC port does not have an fps cap". how does this happen? its 2021. i could understand (who am i kidding no i couldnt) if this was 10 or so years ago, but are you seriously telling me that nobody tested this? i hope nobody did, because if someone saw this and thought, "yeah thats fine" then i would be genuinely concerned. YOU RUN AT LIKE 4 TIMES THE INTENDED SPEED. WHAT?!

so anyway onto the game itself with as few spoilers as humanly possible.
firstly its an open world game, in a style which reminded me a lot of ocarina of time from the get go. large open fields, with various areas, kingdoms and towns extending from that. but unlike ocarina of time, you do a lot of running back and forth between these areas, often on foot. you also do not get fast travel until the second half of the game. needless to say, this is a giant pain. when you do finally unlock the ferry, which serves as this games form of fast travel, the docks for them are so out of the way, and the areas that you can access them from are so big, it hardly reduces the tedium of running about in a barren empty wasteland. that being said though, some of the places you visit are genuinely awe inspiring. I absolutely love the idea of a town built into the side of two parallel cliffs, and a town hidden in the desert where everyone wears masks, and gets around by riding boats on streams of flowing sand. ( also yes i know you do revisit areas in OoT, but its never necessary until you unlock various means of travel, such as the bunny hood, or teleportation songs)

the story of the game initially seems cliché. a young boy trying to save his sister from an illness, but gradually over the course of the game, it really starts to pick up and turn into something truly unique and memorable. my only issue with this is that it takes way too long to really get into the meat of the story. for most of the first act, you're aimlessly running around the world trying to find info on the black scrawl, the illness that the protagonist's sister is suffering from. then in the second act, you are running around trying to get the magic mcguffins to unlock the evil guy's lair. and even once you beat the game for the first time, you end up left with a half finished conclusion, and are forced to replay the game to find out more. to completely understand the game's lore, you have to beat the game 5 times. while i do like the concept of achieving various endings to paint the full picture, the game itself is really tedious. especially when you have to do it multiple times back to back.

also to access the last 3 endings, you also need to collect all 33 weapons, which is an ordeal in itself. specifically the quest to unlock the Labyrinth's shout, is a giant pain in the ass, which has you running back and forth on a really long fetch quest and grinding for rare items, just to get one sword you probably won't even use.

the way weapons and abilities are balanced also leads to an overall unsatisfying combat experience. you are never forced to use the unlockable abilities, and dungeons rarely test you in new ways. this creates a really repetitive gameplay loop, as it pretty much boils down to: go to x place, kill shades, fight big monster, rinse and repeat.

i suppose the main reason why i still absolutely love this game is probably because of the characters. emil and kaine are really interesting, and i really liked the way their pasts and futures were explored throughout the game. that being said though, i also really hate how your party is constantly separated, in really jarring ways. firstly it makes interaction between characters fairly minimal when you aren't doing main story related stuff. secondly it means that when you are in a town area, your party wont be there, only for them to suddenly appear when you exit it

i want to say more about this game but the 5k limit means i cant :/

just want to say i still love this game. its probably my GOTY despite its plethora of issues

Both games suffer from similar bad design issues thought, as fetch quest in Automata are also tedious and combat although smooth and flashy gets quickly repetitive. Later on in the game enemies just become damage sponges. But I think that's because of small worlds both games have, although both have nice vistas to look at. I recon that if the worlds would be bigger and more intricate, combat would be good enough. Story is not bad and better then in Automata. Music is again fantastic and drives the playthrough. But just like with Automata where I only completed Route A and didn't want to play more, here I'm not even sure if I will complete the game. I probably will, but at least half of the game is a slog. I had much more fun with Trials of Mana remake. That one, although much more simple in its design, is way more entertaining. Still, I recommend this one at a discounted price. Expand

Hear me out. I get that this is a remake, so obviously, a lot of its elements have received a drastic overhaul. But, here’s the thing: in my 100 hours of playtime, I couldn’t help but feel that this felt like a PS3 game with a brand-new coat of paint slapped on. I won’t argue that movement and combat feel fluid and fantastic, but everything else still felt….archaic. Side quests were not engaging or compelling: fetch these amount of items, kill this amount of enemies, etc.; fishing and farming mechanics that felt outdated; repetitive boss fights.

But! This game doesn’t need to pride itself on gameplay; you play for its beautiful, strange, and heart-wrenching story; you stay for its cast of characters. Sure, maybe I thought the gameplay was only good enough, but man, did I want to keep playing just to see what unfolds. There is heavy lore here, and I was engrossed. I won’t spoil too much, but it’s not over once those credits roll.

Nier Replicant had this weird ebb and flow. At times, I thought it was good, then average, then fantastic by the end of it. Did it have its ups and downs? It did, but its flaws were not enough to hold it back from being great. Now I understand why this is a cult classic among Nier fans, and it made me a fan too. Get it and enjoy!

Lets start with the good: The story is actually pretty good, and while the lore isnt detailed and has a few plotholes, the characters are so memorable and fun to hang around with, they almost manage to carry the game for me. The game twists quite a few gaming cliches and it sets up some stuff that definitely was picked up by many meta games later on.

Now for the bad: The gameplay and quests are on the range from mediocre to absolutely terrible. The gameplay is a regular beat-em-up that doesnt manage to stand out. Quests are either just fetch quests where they send you from one side of the map again and again, or make you grind materials in a dungeon. The game makes you replay the second part of it 2 times, and while the first replay is interesting and offers a twist on your earlier game time, the second hardly manages to matter and is there just to make you collect all the weapons WHICH IS NECESSARY TO GET THE THIRD ENDING. So its not like you can skip all the boring side quests just to progress the story - you need to do at least some of them. To top it all off, the world itself is so empty and the fast travel mechanic sucks ass - you only unlock it after 10 hours and it only takes you to select locations, sometimes nowhere near where you need to go. You end up with a 15 hour game stretched to 40 hours just because of all the walking you have to do.

It sometimes feels like the game hates you for trying to finish it while offering a really interesting tale with fun characters. It was made years before many expectiations-breaking games and it made some baby steps that Spec Ops The Line and such would follow up on later. I'm not sure if its worth the 60 dollar asking price, as it feels like may indie games have managed to expand many similar ideas since then - including Automata.

Go play Automata tho, that one is a banger.

However, outside of its incredible story and characters, the game is an average action RPG. Toylogic did a fairly decent job remastering the game and improving the combat but I personally feel Toylogic was limited in what they were able to change. Changing the game and/or structure could have made some story beats different although I feel it wouldn’t have taken too much away. The game forces you to replay the 2nd half of the game at least 3 times to get all the endings. It’s nice that they insert more lore and context into the story for each subsequent playthrough, but it doesn’t make playing through the exact same missions and story beats any less tedious. This also brings the issue of making it unclear which cutscenes or dialogues are ok to skip on each subsequent run. And the new contexts usually amounts to somewhere between 15 minutes to an hour of new context. As someone who doesn’t like watching the same cutscenes over and over again, this was a major personal gripe for me. Because of the tedium, it’s hard to give this game too much praise in the gameplay department. If the game had a run-of-the-mill story, I would probably give this game a fairly average score, but the story was so good that it saves what would have been a monotonous action RPG. Expand

    - Annoying mandatory side quest to be finished in first part to reach true ending.

    Conclusion
As annoying as it is to repeat playing the same game multiple times for different ending, it's good story and twist is what makes me reached the end for all ending.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While it may be off putting to some, NieR Replicant manages to deliver a more compelling story, combat, and music than NieR Automata.

The big problem with NieR Replicant are the actual quests, it involves dealing with a lot of **** just to get to your objective, at first you dont see the point of how helping a guy with his delivery letter would help you find your sister, and honestly, it doesnt make a lot of sense, the game takes a bit too much detours from its original objective, so i can definitely see why people may find the story boring, however you need to judge it by what it is, the story is pristine, it delivers a lot of great messages and meaning, the bosses have awesome story and personality, the characters are fantastic, the powers and overall backstory of each characters is amazing as well!

The new ending for this re-release is great, you can finally play with kainé, which has been a request among the community for a while, you feel like you are actually fixing things and brings back memories from Automata, while maybe not being as impactful as Automata's E ending, but nevertheless, i dont have anything else to complain.

The game is absolutely amazing, groundbreaking experience. definitely recommend it. and the pc port also is great.

Everything is cool, but even Weiss is tired of this pointless running around

18/20. Absolutely wonderful. Devola’s music has a lot to do with it. The universe is awesome, mysterious and charming, that mix between sweetness and coldness is so good. I can see the berserk inspiration for the character design in part 2. Gameplay does the job. I definitely prefer the coldness of nier over FF warmness.

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 is an extremely well-thought-out remaster that puts our resilience to the test, with a fantastic story and captivating characters. It does not completely let go of its origins, which at times are somewhat painful. It's a difficult love affair, it demands a lot of our time but it rewards us with one of the most curious and interesting stories of its genre.
  2. Despite the problematic PC port, NieR Replicant ver.1.22 is a great opportunity to experience the game released in 2010 with improved graphics, modern gameplay and excellent music.

A solid action-RPG with a thought-provoking story and fun combat that is held back by repetitive quests and some dated gameplay elements. It is well worth a playthrough but only the most devoted will have the stamina to replay it multiple times to get the full story.
