The combat system rewards skill above all. Dodging, blocking, asking party members for assistance, using special skills, switching weapons during battle, all lend to making combat feel fun and varied.

I could write a hell of a lot more, but then we'd enter more spoiler territory. Suffice to say that this game is worth your time. It's quality. It runs well, it's a good port with mouse and keyboard support, it's got a large selection of graphics options, it's got japanese and english voices as you prefer, and above all it just feels like a polished game. Well done Level-5!

Ni No Kuni II is a very good game. Heavily inspired by Dark Clouds 2 in terms of combat, town building. You also have to manage a small army that has it's own set of events. The sounds were pretty good too, but there isn't voice over on everything. So you will need to read. The music is maybe the aspect that was more average but you can adjust it in the menu. The story seemed simple but it gets more layers has you go. And the ending was very nice and imaginative. Things that weren't perfect: using the boat was short live; the running speed seem very slow at time; many small quest were very similar; the army fights weren't very well balanced...I did many side quests and turn around 48 hours, and I know there were things I didn't find or done. I give it a 90% because it made me remember so much of Dark Clouds and it was executed with a lot of flair and brilliance. Bravo. Expand

Ni no kuni 2 is an upgrade for me from the 1st game. The first game mechanics was turn based and was good and all but I still prefer the new combat mechanics right now. I love the graphics even more now that I was able to play it on the PC! the environment is just so gorgeous.

Music was still the same it's good and all but almost all of them has the same BGM.

I also didn't give this a perfect score because it's incomplete.

But all in all it is a good game and recommended for JRPG lovers and who also played the first one

A wonderful, fun game that is also disappointing.

The game has great visuals, sound, and controls. The worst thing about it is the combat system, which is moronic. It is the same thing over and over again...run around the battlefield pressing x or y (fast attack or slow attack) OR.... jump into the air and press X or Y. It's boring and no fun. It also means all those different weapons and armor you find are less fun too.

It's a shame and feels like a missed opportunity...would have been so much fun to try the different weapons and abilities against the different monsters in a turn based game.

Is it worth playing? Yes. Very much so; I give it an 8. It's still fun because of the visuals and sound.
But it would have been a 10 with good turn based combat. As it is a lot of the variety of weapons and armors and spells is just completely wasted; you barely notice the differences in combat.

It's been a while since I played a JRPG like this, and I must say, the game is dazzling. Aside from the game running buttery smooth, the gameplay feels like a Tales game and the story is told and animated like a Ghibli movie.

I'm not sure why the first game of the series wasn't ported to PC, but this game doesn't follow it so don't worry about continuity. The game was designed more for storytelling than as an actual RPG, so the game is a bit on the easy side, but as long as you set it to at least Hard, it'll feel like a decent challenge. You might want to avoid Expert unless you can tolerate getting randomly oneshot to death during long 15+ minute fights (which is actually really frustrating).

The game is basically the same as a Tales game because it's by the same creators, Bandai-Namco. They reused the same formula of 3D real-time action fighting. The game also comes with a little war simulator, and you can even sail the seas or fly a plane to explore freely, which is really neat.

Unfortunately, the endgame is a bit lackluster because it's grindy and there isn't much incentive for you to explore or do every single side quest unless you're a completionist trying to get every achievement. Side quest rewards and chests found in the world don't give anything meaningful that you can't already get from killing monsters. Near the very end of the game, you will reach a point where you'll need to complete a good number of side quests in order to proceed, so it'll be much more comfortable to gather them and complete them all at this time.

Overall, I don't think the game deserves more than an 8 because of its difficulty and linearity, but you definitely won't regret playing the game especially if you're a fan of the Tales series. The price is pretty steep right now, but if you can wait for it to go on sale, it may be worth your while.

I really loved the graphics. The game has a beautiful and unique aesthetic, with cel-shaded graphics and animals like dogs, cats, and mice being some of the main citizens of the kingdoms you explore. The colors really pop in this game and the environments are so well designed. Places such as the Forest of Niall and Hydropolis were my favorites. I was running the game on a Ryzen 5 1600, 16 GB RAM, and GTX 970. Performance was buttery smooth and the game stayed at a locked 60 FPS.

The music was also fantastic. The main theme that plays during the main menu and overworld never gets old. All themes that were specific to different kingdoms were so well done. The music and sound effects are really cute and add to the storybook atmosphere.

Speaking of storybook atmosphere, something I really appreciated about this game is that it puts an innocent, child-like, storybook spin on real-world issues that need to be present in any serious rpg. The game pulls it off so well and does so in a way that the story is compelling. Issues like revenge, racism, and self-reflection are seen through the innocent eyes of Evan, the main character, but are also taken very seriously. Not that there aren't moments that are cliche or reductive, but for the most part, this balance is executed really well.

Combat is a lot of fun in this game and a definite strength. The mechanics are similar to other japanese action rpgs like Legend of Mana. The default difficulty setting has been criticized for being too easy, so I played the game on hard mode, which seemed to make things more challenging. It's a lot of dodging, mixing light and heavy attacks, and using special skills. Battles are quick and snappy.

There were a few things that I didn't like about this game. All of the ancillary activities are kind of half-baked. I didn't find the kingdom building to be very fun. It's something that is required of you to do though, which is annoying. Building facilities and recruiting citizens may be fun for some people, but I just wanted to focus on the main story and progress through the game without worrying about the kingdom part.

I also wasn't a huge fan of the skirmishes, which are kind of like a real-time strategy mini-game where you control different units to complete various missions. Thankfully, they seemed relatively easy for the most part and didn't require too much strategy. But it's also required and there are some points where I found my units to be lower level than they needed, which required me to grind a tiny bit to get them up to speed.

The last thing I didn't like was that I hit a point in the game towards the end where I wasn't able to progress unless I completed a lot of side-quests related to kingdom building. It makes sense from the game's perspective, but it was annoying.

All in all, this game is a solid 8/10!

But now that i have beaten it, i just **** love this game so much. The characters and story are very weak, but i believe thats the only major flaw with this game. The combate system nailed it, and the world is a joy to just exist in. Ni No Kuni II is truly a tale, deliberately naïve and full of colorful characters. The combination of different genres, JRPG, management and RTS, works well, as each style is interwoven with the others.
  3. With the successful fighting system and the dynamics of the story, Ni Ko Kuni II is once again the challenging JRPG we miss.
