I'm just here to say that microtransactions in full-priced games are a cancer on the gaming industry, that's spreading as fast as we're allowing it to. Lootboxes manage to be even worse. I can't stand them on multiplayer games but single player? F**k off.

I really enjoyed the 1st Shadow of Mordor, unfortunately Shadow of War not so much, lot of reused assets, repeated missions, average story, And a god damn microtransactions.
the online feature needs lot of improvements.

Game is great until the Shadow Wars and then it starts getting annoying unless you like grinding. If you don't like grinding then watch the ending on youtube.

Buy the game if you loved Shadow of Mordor and want an expanded version of it with a better story. If you don't like the microtransactions then you don't have to buy any.

The wonky ass engine hasn't improved one but from the first one. Why? Even Assassins Creed does a better job with it. I can't repeat myself about how bad they screwed this game up.

The story feels off, the main character feels out of place in this one.

Story missions are somewhat okay but the "get orcs on your side" stuff gets annoying. You managed to level up your guys and then they betray you one after the other? Yeah fck you too WB.

I really don't feel like writing a long review because every single breath is wasted on this one. They should feel ashamed for releasing this type of Game for 60$ + microtransactions....

There is barely anything standing out with this game so there is no need to in deep so I will make it short with pros and cons only.

    Pros:
    - Nemesis system - I must say it's only engaging part of the game. Without it, this would be one of the worst games in last decade.
    - Orc presentation and narrative.
    - Quite fun action combat, but due to amounts of orcs you slay, it gets tiresome after a while.

    Cons:
    - graphics - very dated and quite ugly overall presentation
    - world design - very unimpressive, copy/paste objects at random locations - done.
    - mouse acceleration - really? This is issue since prequel, still they did not manage to implement raw input.
    - barely existent story - you do same thing over and over, which is slaying orcs and you get to watch cinematic from time to time.
    - repetitive missions - it simply a set of few different types of quests/activities that repeats over and over throughout the whole game, which makes gameplay experience very dull and boring.
    - act 4 is doing same thing 10 time just to see final cinematic (commonly called true ending) - I was already bored to death after whole game being utterly repetitive, so I quit the game after siege #3 and simply watched true ending on YT (best gaming decision in my life!)
    - Cutout DLC that should be in main game.
    - Microtransactions in SP games which feel enforced by gating true ending behind dull and boring grind. If you must buy this game - don't feed this greedy published with any more money. One - you encourage similar behavior this way in the future. Two - its not worth, you can watch true ending cinematic on YT and save either time or money. This loot box/cache thing in fully priced games (especially singleplayer) needs to stop.

Summing up, it's overly repetitive and dull game and only nemesis systems gives some brighter moments in this whole melancholic experience.. I cannot recommend this to anyone, don't buy it and don't encourage similar behavior from WB in the future. My game copy came with graphics card (special nvidia bundle).

Just ingore its existence and move on, absolute waste of time with minimal fun value.

4/10 only just for funny orcs and nemesis system.

Game feels a bit harder than the first one, defeating orc captains or other bosses sometimes make you feel like you're playing Dark Souls simulator because of the dodge moves you make. But mostly, game is very fun to play. They say it's grindy, well, at least it's not as grindy as GTA V. In Shadow of War, you forget you're grinding because of the nemessis system, a lot of random orc captain encounters and item drops from them are another things which you're already grinding without realizing and having fun.
Main character looks far worse than in the Mordor game, but Celebrimbor looks far better. My only complaint is i wish main character looked more badass, and graphics are better. However, in some maps, environment details look top notch, in some others, look terrible. Also game characters (orcs, humans etc.) have almost no lightning on them, which makes them look flat. And, while game looks worse than Mordor, it also performs worse than Mordor. I, personally, locked the FPS to 30 and set almost everything to max graphics to enjoy it. It looks more cinematic and if you have terrible fps drops, 30fps lock helps you.
And another thing, Shadow of Mordor is more brutal. (blood effects, more frequent decapitations in SoM) SoM Players will find out what i'm trying to say.
I've completed the game, saw the ending. One of the most memorable game endings ever, and no, you don't have to pay anything to see that ending(s). There's one ending which you can see after main quests, and other one is... Well after doing more quests (i don't want to give spoilers).
Instead of boycoting a game without playing it, first play it. If there are issues which heavily affect your gaming experience, then you're free to give all those 0-1-2-3-4 points. No **** crashes, no game breaking bugs, nothing. At least i didn't encounter any serious bug.

This game started off really well like Shadow of Mordor, but Act 4 is an absolute joke. They decided they were just going to throw on about 10 hours of grinding the exact same thing over and over again and make your army way underpowered if you don't buy their loot crates.

The game seems longer too, than it's predecessor. There are more areas and the story has more depth and different quest lines. Overall there is lot to do, so you won't be bored very easily in this game. The orcs, captains, warchiefs and overlords have really many different traits and features which makes the gameplay more interesting.

Shadow of War (the name could be less generic though) is one of the best games in 2017. The fact that it's based on Lord of the Rings lore makes it even more great.

The battle system is ripped of from Arkham Knight and sometimes can be really cool, but it quickly becomes tedious. Most of the time orcs overwhelm you and you can do nothing about it. All that is left is to permablock their attacks or run away. Also there will always be some archers breaking your combo chain or some random orc will hit you from behind where you couldnt even see him. The combat is 50/50 fun and frustrating. But the further you get, the more frustrating it becomes.
And that is so even if you spend a lot of time to grind and collect all the stupid stuff devs left on the map. You kinda have to do those boring challenges and fetch quests, cause you get skill points from them which are pretty important.
Nemesis system is pretty interesting, but pointless as it never stops generating new orcs. You can kill a ton of them, but still they will be replaced with another ones, making your efforts kinda pointless. Truth be said I quit the game just before sieging the first fortress, but I doubt anything will change after that.
Besides, if I get bored preparing for the first siege, how boring it will get doing the same 4 more times?
The art and map design is mediocre at best. The Minas Ithil is good, but then you start to notice that every location has almost the same buldings and towers (even cave locations, jeez), which is disappointing.
All in all, I deleted the game, cause I have better use for my time than to pointlesly run around and slaughter endless orcs. You can try it, but right now I will honestly recommend to get South Park or new Wolfenstein.
And yes, microtransactions suck. This games deserve no more than 6/10 IMHO

The worst money making I have seen in a Triple-A game so far: first charging 60 dollars for the game, then demanding microtransactions to see the end of the game. When 2 orcs have a fight in the pit the AI is so stupid that most of the time the units just stands there and dies. And you have to lvl up, and the only thing you can do is buying more lootboxes. So when you have paid 60 euro game, you have to add at least 20 more euro to finish the game. It is like they are taking a piss in your face when you are halfway in the game. And the game before that is not even enjoyable. It is the same assassin's creeds farming quest that says every time; go there and kill 5 guys, good job, now go here and kill 7 guys in the same way, good job, now you lvl up. And so it continues the hole game, until the microtransaction part. Despite being fairly long (I logged in 34 hours while getting 50% through act IV (will elaborate on) and finishing ALL except the act 4 stages), with one notable exceptions and two beasts, no new types of enemies appear after Act 1 (of four), which makes the game very monotone. Especially since the end boss is always the same enemy type.

The second crux is the story. By gods is it forced, there is just no flow to the narrative. And while the cut scenes are fairly enjoyable and voice acting decent. The final product is just bad.
The golden rule of story telling is, that one scene to another should get via 'Because of that' or 'Therefore'. This game is just full of 'and then', 'and then', 'and thens'. And the worst thing is, the players action, are often irrelevant to the story itself. For example (sans details),
Quest: Do something, to stop something
Result: You did it, it happened anyway
Next quest: Stop the new thing
Result: You did but it escaped in cutscene

And this happens almost every time until the end of a given quest chain. The story is happening regardless Talion, which makes the experience less enjoyable.

And finally forts. Huge part of act 2 and 4. This is where AC1 comes in. IT IS THE SAME THING 4 TIMES in act 2 and 10 TIMES in act 4. While the mechanism of conquering and defending forts is extremely enjoyable the first time, it is passable the second time and chore every other time, since it is ALWAYS THE SAME THING. Sure there is a little variability (weaknesses and number). But it is just not enough, here come 2 bosses, then 3 bosses then 5 bosses, rinse and repeat. In act 4 I finished stages 1-4, then I lost at stage 5 (wanted to see what will happen). Saw it, will not play this game anymore, I am just not enjoying myself no longer.

Infuriation factor is further increased because of introductions in the nemesis mechanics. Every time captain enters the field, the game pauses and he makes a speech about how pathetic you are and how he will kill you. It is funny the first 6-10 times (They only started to repeat past the 30h mark which is admirable), but after that COME ON, I single single handedly defeat half the Mordor, and some turd 30lvls below me still makes the "I will kill you, since you suck" speech? This, with an inability to skip it, might actually be half the reason for me not finishing Act 4. (You get to hear it 5-10 times per stage)

Kind of pity they didn't gut the fort mechanic down to one fort in ACT 2 and 2 stages in act 4. And leave them just to MP. Sure the game would be only 15 hours long, but it would be extremely enjoyable and worth a 7, as is 6

You pay for a game with the true ending behind a paywall. Microtransactions are the new cancer that is destroying videogames. They ruined a game with a lot of potential because of greed. Do not buy it until they change their policy.

my initial review was a protest review because of the micro transactions, but I got my hands on a copy of the game and put in 20 hours. I don't know what game the "journalists" played but this game is god awful. It is full of repetitive tasks to do all over the map, the combat attempts to be like Arkham Knight but is more like Assassins Creed Syndacate, but it doesn't have a good story like either of those games. This game feels like it was designed from the top down to encourage you to use the loot crates and purchase items with real money. This isn't even a game. It's gambling with real money for in game items disguised as a Lord or the Rings game. This is not a detail oriented or well designed game. It's some mechanics with 6 different types of tasks repeated and scattered across a cheap lazily designed open world. The graphics are not pretty to look at, the orcs look childish and stupid, not scary at all. The combat is not challenging and it's very repetitive. The main quests are not interesting at all. Pretty much a blur of hyperbole. The reason that people are liking this game is because it's addictive, because it was designed to be addictive from the ground up. It is in no objective way a good game. I would go as far to say that it's not really a video game. It's a gambling machine. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. it's ... OK. Would give it a C+ , maybe a B-, but never an A. There is no way that it is an A.

I wanted to like this title. I gave it a good run through, several restarts, but quit before I finished the storyline ... out of sheer boredom. A lot of effort went into this product. I give them that. A lot more was needed.

The result is interesting and sometimes fun, but not always. The game is a lot of work though, and it feels like work. Hard drudgery at times.

There are also problems in concept, design, and commercial strategy. Here are just four issues to give you an idea:
    1. NEW RING
The 'new ring' gives you less utility than the old dominate power in the previous title (a power which you possessed just for being a wraith....in Shadow of War you need a ring). Fact is, Orc champions can often resist the domination power and they seem to be able to overcome the effects at will (Random betrayals, iron will). What a lousy gadget. Celimbrimbor definitely seems to have lost his artisan's touch.
    2. FORTS
The process of taking and owning a fort is a huge letdown. It isn't interesting, at all, but it could have been. Wasn't this the major selling point of the game? It looked great in the preview.
    3. SILLY STORY
As an example: Idril, the scrawny fifteen year old girl, is a champion orc slayer....killing hordes of Uruks, which are bred for war! Oh come on! Is this Orwellian doublethink?
    4. HAND IN YOUR WALLET
Expensive product ... and they start trying to sop up more cash right out of the gate!
I support capitalism, but I think in their quest for shareholder value Warner allowed monetization considerations to be a factor early in the design process. I find that this approach kills the creativity and the 'magical' elements that come together to make a triple A title.

Warner had two great sleeper titles (Shadow of Mordor and Mad Max) that made me optimistic for the future of this publisher. I hope they learn from this lackluster release and improve for next time.

Sitting at an absurd 80 from Critics, Shadow of War is the greatest example so far as to why Critics such as IGN, GameSpace, and many others have become completely irrelevant in the current day. To think that their "reviews" of these games carries any weight is a joke, the only weight involved is the weight of the money being dropped on their desks.

This game sacrifices gameplay and integrity for Microtransactions, and to say it doesn't is to blatantly lie to the faces of the people. Act 4 is a massive grind, purely to try to force the player to purchase their gambling boxes, coming from a full-price """Triple-A""" video game with massive marketing, multiple overpriced editions, sponsorship deals, and god knows what else, but none of that was enough money for WB.

But hey, I suppose all that extra dosh came in handy when it came to paying off the "Critics".

Combat system and control feedback are bad, esperially in said above massive fights and sieges. But also the skill set for rogue play and how you can you use it is beautiful.

Until the 4th act it's a great action RPG with an interesting storytelling. Like any action it can become repetitive, but it's not pure hack and slash, because half of the game you can be a rogue, which is the best part of gameplay. Also the creators did nice job in making your enemies more lively for you not to get tired of killing them again and again. Until some point of course when you have already killed hundreds of them.

P.S. About mini-transactions: They don't really effect the gameplay if you don't use them until the 4th act. Yes, there is a lot of grime in the end, but the worst part about it are not mini-transactions, but horrible siege gameplay and too badly done massive fights, also it all becomes too similar and repetitive, besides being badly done.

A lot of people give this game 0 rating because of it, which is dumb. Yes, the game became much worse because of the 4th act, but until that point everything was great.

Multiplayer is also not worth even trying, because it's siege.

Although I do not approve of the practice of microstransactions, at least here it’s not necessary to finish the game. Amd besides that, the story is great, the game mechanics are intuitive and complex at the same time, and you will have a blast.

I'm sorry but the place of microtransactions is to add in extra optional advantages or aesthetic customization. In this game it appears they used forced grinding at obscene levels to encourage people to buy items just so they can beat the game in a fun way. Not a good business practice. Do not support.

The repetitiveness, grinding and sub par combat becomes annoying that you either rush through the story for the sake of it or quit.

The "Nemesis" system does not fail to infuriate (in the best way) and impress. There is something so satisfying about one of your warchiefs betraying you, so you shame him. He then tries to ambush you, so you shame him again. Out of spite you hunt him down and shame him until he is level 1. You then burn him to death for good measure. A while later you are ambushed and it turns out he has cheated death and has become a level 40, he is deranged from all the shaming, and is wearing bandages from being burned. At that point I branded him again and made him overlord of a fort. This is just one amazing experience I have had so far with the nemesis system and there have been countless others.

Besides the Nemesis system I love the new item and gem systems. Both of these combined with all the skill options allows you a lot of customization to suit your playstyle or adapt to the needs of a situation.

This is so far one of the most entertaining games I have played this year. It is beautiful in 4K and it is everything the developer promised it to be. Bigger and better than the first game. I can’t wait for DLC to this and hopefully a 3rd game in this series. Well done Monolith!

You do not need to buy anything with real money, and you can even get quite a nice amount of the premium currency by playing the asynchronous online game. Or you can buy lootboxes with ingame currency which the game showers you in. If you don't rush it, and just explore and play around with the nemesis system which is better than ever, then you will have no problem in the late game.
That out of the way, the game is good. It's just more of the same thing as Shadow of Mordor, but with expanded gameplay, a much better nemesis system, smooth gameplay that will open up 4-5 hours into the game in a drastic manner. The first hours are not the best, but after you acquire the ability to turn orcs to your side, it's a different experience, and one of the best around. Killing orcs is fun, taking ones you like over is better, and then making them do all sorts of crazy stuff is the best. Combat has improved over the first game. It's still the same basics, with a lot of unlockable skills, and modifiers to those skills, and orc captains who will actually learn your patterns, and defend against them, which will make the crazy fights from the first game even more crazier. And it's fun to lose too, which a lot of games can't do well.
As to negatives, the freerunning is still not as smooth as i would have liked, you can get stuck on things, run up things you don't want, not being able to ascend. It's serviceable but not the best. The story and voice acting is ranging from mediocre to bad most of the time, but there are a couple of good characters, and the ending of act 3 is quite spectacular. Did not expect it, it's quite fitting, and it makes you rethink things which is good. Also it busts Tolkien's lore all over the place, but if you are okay with sometimes fanfiction levels of plot, it serves the game. Still skipped a lot of it, and i really hated all of the gondorians. Also the orcs talk a bit too much sometimes, and it's unskippable.
All in all, even if it's not GOTY, or my favorite game ever, it's a really good game, worth playing, and worth replaying. And don't worry about the userscore here. It reflects the views of people who never played the game. People who actually bought it, and reviewed it over on Steam, show a much better picture with over 80% recommendations.

In the game you can get everything trough grinding and gaming.
And yes, it has micros, so you can get more stuff faster. You ARE FREE to get them or not. It depends of the money and time you have. I think it is POSSITIVE that, for people with LESS TIME TO PLAY, people with family, job, than can play maybe 6 hours A WEEK (yes, they exist, and they love gaming as much as we do), they implement this kind of "boosts", so that they can achieve, if they want, better stuff earlier. But, would it influence in YOUR GAMEPLAY, you player that doesnt want to spend more money? It doesnt, does it?.
The game is wonderfull, beautifull, deep and well optimized. It has every way improved from the first one. Is fun and, in hard option, it makes you think what to do and not jump into a bunch of orcs, coz they will rape you early game at least.

You can like it micros or not BUT IN THIS CASE, single player game and not P2W, you ARE FREE to choose if buy boosts or not. Let people but it if they want, as they buy XP boosts in League of Legends or War Thunder. There are lots of gamers in our community without the time you have to sepnd gaming, but with a good lvl of economy. Everyone is free investing their MONEY AND THEIR TIME. If a company gives us the chance, WITHOUT SPOILING the game, i think is possitive. Dont be rat ids and give a chance to EMPATHY.

The new captain system separates captains into classes, such as destroyer, tank and assassin. These classes have been implemented in an utterly terrible way, and contribute to most of the captains feeling remarkably similar. Rather than getting a few worthless captains and a few diamonds in the rough which truly stand out as adversaries, the class system has made them all fit into neat, sameish categories. No longer will you have a Prak Jaws, instead you will have a Prak Jaws template which you will see ad-nauseam. Traits seem to have heavy bias, with almost every captain having some kind of grenade attack. A suspicious choice, considering the ability to purchase more interesting orks with real life cash.

Beyond that, there are several aspects of the game which have regressed from the predecessor. The movement system is AWFUL. Dodgerolls frequently stick you to the spot and force you to dance to your death, and area of effect attacks cannot be dodged with the dodge button, as the animation is too slow and you will be stuck in the field of fire regardless. Combat often freezes, with Tallion constantly reaching for his blade instead of making a strike, allowing enemies to get in free shots. The fluid, though sometimes flawed movement of the prequel has been completely ruined; more often than not, you are going to flip in the opposite direction you intended, jump off of things to your death, and get stuck on corners whilst trying to make an escape, because the game does not recognise that you wish to jump off. The camera frequently gets stuck on objects and zooms in on inconsequential things, usually getting you killed in the process. Combat is much harder this time, which would be a welcome change had everything else not worked against it.

There are several parts in the game very, very clearly designed for microtransactions. Story missions frequently feature enemies drastically above your level, and often also have essential characters you cannot let die. You are given a choice of protecting the character and getting blindsighted by a captain nearly twice your strength, fighting the captain and letting the character get killed, losing in the process, grinding until the game is no longer fun so you can match him, or buying an upgrade for yourself. Oh yes, this game is FULL of grind. The prior game had its flaws with its incredibly low difficulty, barring special circumstances, but even that was preferable to the leveling system in this.

If you can ignore these flaws, the game its self is not bad. It's playable, it can be nicely challenging in the right circumstances, but given the massive amount of microtransactions, I can only believe that these flawed new systems are put in to drive you to buy your way out of them. What a disgusting, dishonest and manipulative business practice. Do not buy.

It's still a gripe of mine that time passes in all regions not just the one you are in. This has resulted in me not having control/being able to help in missions. Some of my fave orcs get killed.

And the big one: P2W crates. Are they required? Not necessarily. Are they needed? Kinda, unless you farm like a mofo.

I love the gameplay, the mechanics, the art directions, the animations, the free-running, it feels, sounds and tastes like Shadow of Mordor, but with enhanced graphics, map and story. As I didn't buy the game I have no access to online and microtransactions so I don't give a **** about it and I just have fun with it. The only bad point I found so long was that it is as easy as SoM even in Nemesis difficuly (only two hours of playtime for now, but I don't think it will change much).
I'll keep the old review just so you can read it, but here's what I really think:
    1) This would be GOTY for everyone if no there were no microtransactions and people whining about it.
    2) It is sad that WB scums kept microtransactions in-game though.
    3) Play the game like me, don't care about microtransactions, I'm pretty sure I won't need it if I play this like Shadow of Mordor (aka 100%-in the game)

I will probably get the score up once I played and finished the game, but well, I won't buy it because of microtransactions. Seriously, no one wanted it, it has been added because of **** pressure, and it will probably kill the Middle-Earth franchise, and Monolith.
What did you think; making a $100 version of the game and forcing players to pay additional money to see the true ending was NOT a good idea. It will NEVER be a good idea. No one likes this.

So to sum up the upcoming consequences of this catastrophic failure, WB, you scums:

    1) This will kill Monolith which will probably go bankrupt because of the conjonction of the economic system AND the day1 crack
    2) It will also kill the Middle-Earth franchise, we won't ever see another episode of Talion's journey
3 ) It ruins the game, I still don't know to this day if it's worth playing, as this section turned me down
4 ) It's NOT a **** mobile game, and no PC game should ever be like this.

Sincerely, GO **** YOURSELF WITH A SPOON, WB.

This game is **** of systems, menus, ideas, features, concepts, mechanics and so on to make you grind your way through the famous Nemesis system, all of that very well thought to be as endless as a slot machine.

Lots of little things are wrong with this game because nobody can expect to put together so many features and mechanics with cohesion. Some examples are:

-Having stealth mechanics but almost instantly respawning enemys when you turn the camera.
-Merging a very (very, very) fast paced heavy action gameplay with a very slow and clumsy stealth gameplay.
-A super narrow FOV belonging more to a very story/cinematic game while being super action focused.
-You have to hold button A to run. That means you cannot use the camera while you explore/make your way to the objectives. (Assassin’s Creed fixed that problem in this kind of parkour oriented open world games 10 years ago. But somehow, Monolith, who managed to copy **** ton of stuff from AC for these shadow of series haven’t wanted to copy the controls…idiotic).
-Even with the handicap of not being able to control the camera while running, you will prefer to be blindly running all the time because the normal speed is stupidly slow.
-If u hold A (jump/climb/run button), you’re a semi god able to jump huge gaps between buildings and climbing huge towers in 2-3 seconds. But if you decide to explore your environment by doing the simplest and crucial action in a 3D videogame that is moving the camera, you will be infuriatingly slow and clumsy.
-Lots and lots of split and watered abilitys and loot items doesn’t really add nothing ot the game.

The level design is inexistent. Gameplay wise is somewhat random. You have this parkour gameplay mechanic that let you make god jumps and super fast climbs over any building in the game but then you often find yourself inevitably having to get down of a building to go to another, because level design doesn’t know what to be.

If u accidentally start a fight, anwhere, you will have like three or four bosses poping from nowhere almost instantly, endlessly talking meaningless **** to you. But that’s not the worst, because in this game every death counts and the more your die the more they grow and get stronger. That is actually a neat feature, and a very well thought way of handling death and giving meaning to that, its one of the good ideas the game has. The problem is no matter how many bosses you kill or how hard they are and how rewarding they seem after you defeat them, they are infinite. After 4 hours, you realize you’re playing a brainless very well designed game loop of boss grinding. And all the feeling of progresion and rewarding simply vanishes.

Then you have the endless constant and almost instantaneously enemy respawn that make no **** sense. You never ever will totally clear any area at all, you will never ever have the feeling of beating enemys because they will respawn within seconds every where, anywhere, anytime. It’s just frustrating and not rewarding at all for the player. The same feeling as with the boses, two of the more impòrtant feelings a player can have playing a videogame, Progresion and Reward just vanishes disapears to not come back never again. That’s just bad game design.

The story is just uninteresting, especially if u like the LOTR universe. Tolkien is famous and beloved because he created a cohesive, coherent, comprehensive, and (yet another c word) compelling fantastic universe. They just **** on that and constantly make up things that directly contradict Tolkien's lore. I get that sometimes, games and books are not the best friends, and developers have to meet script requirements in order to build good gameplay and story arc for a 10 to 25 hour long journey... But Shadow of War is just stupid.

And finally the Loot crates. It’s the design Stupid! The game was designed, first off with a multiplayer arena in mind, that impacts the extremely fast paced/twitchy gameplay (SoM was a fast action game but not anxiously twitchy in every aspect of it), and the idea of endless game looping with endless but meanningless loot and bosses (thers legendary an epic random bosses too! Yeah like the loot itself).

PLEASE DEVELOPERS OF THE WORLD, MORE IS NEVER BETTER. ONLY BETTER IS BETTER. And sometimes, that means balancing stuff, and give cohesion to the whole thing by getting things out, not putting more in.
I Give this game a 6/10, because i apreciate the art and the work of developers. But, SoW is just an aimless incoherent game with an opressive need for rushing at everything. And repetitive/meaningless mechanics.

This is just a tease. Lots more in my blog, 5000 chars doesn’t allow for a deep analysis.

I have to say that the negative reception just because of presence of lootboxes is absolutely ridiculous and overblown. I want to be fair to the game so I will actually give some reasoning:

    1) You don't need lootboxes in the first place. They do not give anything that you cannot get by yourself - including legendary followers. Additionally legendary followers cannot replace knowing at least basics of the game. E.g. not sending your follower who is terrified of karagors against beatmaster.

    2) The "true ending" is in reality an endgame content. You bet the main storyline and instead of finishing the game outright you have a possibility to play the game for fun with at least some sort of a goal in the end. It is absolutely perfect to play the game just an hour or two a day for a longer time to achieve this. I love this concept as this is something that many sandbox games (e.g. Mount and blade) are weak at. Once you have the full builds and all the levels these games lack true endgame content to participate in.

    3) Even if you do not believe in any of what was said you can gain gold from daily challenges if you wish. But you can also earn **** of ingame currency that can also buy you stuff as you play. My estimate is that you can get content that one gold chest gives in around 20 to 30 minutes of regular play - while actually having fun and progressing the game. But as I explained in 1 and 2 you really do not need this.

Now some people may come and say that no matter the arguments they hate lootboxes and they will not support any game that has it. Fair enough. But then it is a mystery for me that games like PoE have high ratings when in these games real money gives you tangible advantage (e.g. purchasing stashes in PoE is basically a must if you want to be on par with other players).

Where some people see corporate greed I see another opportunity for monetization. If there are people who wish to spend hundreds of dollars for a game then let them. This will make game developers more successful so that we can have more quality games in the future. There are obviously people who disagree with this monetization model and that is fair. However I would love to see consistency there - not picking this game as a scapegoat and example to be punished.

Speaking of quality I believe this is a solid continuation of the first installment. The combat is fun, the story is compelling and there is good new content added in form of challenges and other stuff. You have more abilities and more toys to play with when you are murdering the orcs. In general the game is well executed and anybody who enjoyed the first installment or games like Dying Light will be happy with this game.

    - Characters/Acting - SUPERB
    - Gameplay - very solid non-stop slaughtering of Orcs, and after each kill you want more :)
    - Graphics - face animations are very cool BUT overall visuals are "meh"... game took a hit on graphics to keep the scale - and scale of game world here is HUGE!
    - Sound - Very solid.
    - Microtransactions? NOT A PROBLEM. DO NOT read those kids giving game 0 score. They just can't buy the game or simply spoiled and just moving with the hate train of mainstream gaming journals.

I highly recommend this game to any player who is interested in strong, character-centric, story driven, long hours fun!
Also, if you skipped first game - go pick it up, you'll not regret it!

Micro transaction and Denuvo DRM, that's a big no no. From these two we know how greedy the corp is and how far they will go to milk all the money from players. This is a disgusting business model and should not be encouraged.

Day-one dlc? AND microtransaction? WTF? Disgusting greed. Never AAA games again... EA and Bethesda games... How did we admit it?

Dont buy. Ever. These companies should go bankrupt.

Guys and girls... go indie. We wants real games again.

All the people writing 0 score reviews are idiots. If they would have actually played the game, they would know the loot boxes are completely unnecessary. Should they have added them? No, not in my opinion. Does it hurt the gameplay? Not at all.

How a review site doesn't require people to have actually played the game is beyond me. To me, this game is shadow of mordor but just plain

To me, this game is shadow of mordor but just plain better. Better movement, better orcs, bigger fights.

To any of you losers "boycotting" the game, go boycott something that's actually worth doing that to. This is a singleplayer game, if people want to spend extra money to get more orcs, let them. It's not a pay2win mechanic. It's not a paywall. nothing in the boxes is exclusive.

Of all the games you could have done this to, this is not the one.

Glad this game got cracked day one even with the latest Denuvo. The devs and publisher deserve to be kicked in the family jewels until they pass out for this disaster of a lootcrate system.

Loot boxes in 60 Single Player game. NO FREAKING WAY! Avoid at any price and tell publishers and devs we are not putting up with this BS greed any longer.

It is sad that we have reached a point where games publishers think that charging full price for a game isn't enough; instead they want more money by giving the player incentive to pay for loot boxes. It is especially sad because the game itself is so good.

Microtransactions in an $60 single player game is like buying a nice car and then after driving it for 1 year, a message pops up on the dashboard saying you can only drive a maximum of 40 mph unless you purchase more "credits".

    Unacceptable filthy greed.

The game by itself is OK. But i agree with community, that it's time to stop this micro-transaction **** policy. And i'm really happy to see, that people show their position to sales analysts with ties, who thoughts that they can make like 6.34% more easy money and that this is like the best idea ever. Nope.

I started playing in full discount version btw. Do not buy it.

Trash game by **** developers. dont buy this game, the devs dont deserve the money with their braindead microtransactions .

i can easily turn on trainers and cheats myself with all currency since its a god damn single player game. tested on multiplayer and it works.

so only retards would be spending real money on that **** you are better off not buying the game, they dont deserve anything

A list of the ways microtransactions have ruined my experience of the game...
They haven't, I've played it perfectly fine without the tiniest need to buy lootboxes, stop making such a big deal out of nothing. The game is really good and no need to buy lootboxes, if you liked the first game you will love this one

As always don't trust game magazines or reviewers, they gave this game a good score. But they are not gamers at hearth and probably got a **** of money.

Is the game good? We don't know, and frnakly that's not the point. Shady bussiness practices, and reselling the same game 4x + immersion breaking lootboxes in a singleplayer game. **** that, I am pirating the game and If someone

Dumbasses that don't own the game are spamming this to try and get it a bad score. Ignore the loot box **** and the game itself is absolutely fantastic

Game is being review bombed by people who've never played and are mad about loot boxes, so I felt the need to add my 2 cents as someone who's actually got at least 10 hours in it (and intend to put many, MANY more into it.)

Its bloody good fun and if you enjoyed Shadow of Mordor then you'll love it. Ignore the haters, yes there are loot boxes but no you don't need to buy them. I'm

Its bloody good fun and if you enjoyed Shadow of Mordor then you'll love it. Ignore the haters, yes there are loot boxes but no you don't need to buy them. I'm drowning in the ingame currency and even then I haven't got any loot boxes apart from the ones I unlocked by playing the game. You get a gold loot box for doing online vendetta mission and the get rewarded with premium currency for doing certain objectives.

The orcs are the real heroes of this game and the interactions with them are brilliant. My fav so far was called "the Bard" his weapon was a lute/club and he sang me a song before attacking and then sang throughout the fight. Another one was "Krackhorn the Inscrutable" who was extremely fast talking with an Irish brogue (if you've ever seen Snatch, he was basically a pikey ork)

Lorewise you might be a bit irritated if you're a hardcore Tolkien fan but it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

Final thoughts: Ignore the children who have sticks in their butts about something completely ignorable. This is a good game and shouldn't be getting the hate that it is. It's a shame they've manages to tank the user score here but hopefully it will come back up when more people who actually own the game get around to reviewing it (they're all too busy at the moment having fun slaughtering orcs)

Game ruined by microtransactions. This game is getting good scores from the legacy gaming media because they never have and never will look out for the consumer. If a publisher wants to ruin their game by putting gambling via microtransactions in at the cost of quality then they must accept the poor review scores from the consumer.

A huge game that, despite of the quality of the fight and the delight of the Orb, offers paradoxically very small. It's not a failure, but we were expecting more. [Issue#279]

Nemesis is a one-hit wonder of a mechanic. Everything else in Middle-earth is mediocre at best, but Nemesis makes it all worthwhile, since every playthrough is truly unique – a feature none of its triple-A competitors can offer. [Issue#225, p.38]

A lot of people were upset to find out that Shadow of War has loot boxes, and they are kind of annoying. Unfortunately, loot boxes is the least of its problems.
