I got this game and most of the DLC on a steam sale.... Having played the original I was surprised by the size of the thing and the variety of the maps and missions. (Apparently around 27% complete). Mostly the missions involve beating the crap out of some orcs, some involve a bit of investigation then beating the crap out of some orcs..... It's an open world, you don't have to completely follow the story, it waits for you while you beat the crap out of some orcs you didn't have to.... And there is no end to the orcish horde, sometimes they respawn while you are finishing off the last of the first group and trying to collect the loot.... It ain't perfect but it's big, some of the missions story missions seem to lose their way, but at least it isn't a linear path to the end.... Now if you will excuse me I have a warlord to kill so I can take their stronghold as a barracks, after that, or maybe after something else I have to deal with a Balrog. Pretty sure it's worse than a drake, and they are just a pain in the arse..... Expand

So what i got was a pretty good game, there's a bunch of stuffed ideas there, some good, others not so much, but the not so good ones dont ruin anything.
full of content, diverse maps (although i dont like this kind of games without a single big map), there's the nemesis mode where we can invade fortresses and thats cool AF, and the Otcs, once again, are a whole lot interesting than other characters (specially Talion, the most uninteresting main character ever created in the history of video games. like, the frog from frogger is a lot more interesting)
actually, i think that's the actual worst part of the game, the buddy we play with is literally just a vessel for us to control. almost none of the missions is about me. playng as talion is like playing with one of those generic NPCs that sometimes come with us in any other game, I'd rather play as ratbag and i'm not kidding at all.

I absolutely loved this game. Fully immersive. Yes there are micro transactions however you do not need them.
Don;t listen to the negatives. It is an amazing game.
A mix of Batman Arkham City and Assassins Creed style. With cool powers and in the Middle Earth series. Absolutely fantastic story with Gripping levels.

Great game, though it has repetitive mechanic of fighting orcs it is really addicting, story is great , with artistic freedom but keeping in spirit of Tolkien's work more than PJ's Hobbit. Though micro transactions are bad, the game deserves much better score. My score would be 8,5 but it deserves some boost ,since most negatives are about forced micro-transactions.

Madly playable and addictive gameplay just as Shadow of Mordor, story is much better than you would expect and has quite a lot of depth. Even though lore accuracy is like none and game is not fully "serious" and mixes up tragedy and comedy all the time, there is a method in this madness and overall package is a success I didn't really expect when starting the game. Sieges and building your army was also not as ridiculous at it seemed at first. Infamous Act 4 has now only 5 fortress defenses instead of 20 from the original release, so you don't have to grind anything and resources you gather throughout the game are more than enough to complete these 5 defenses and it doesn't take long, and total of 35 hours for the entire game with around 90% overall completion and 100% with both story expansions, which were also enjoyable and better than SoM's expansions. On technical side of things the only real issue are these dreaded pre-rendered cutscenes that not only look like a joke even with 4K cutscene pack installed (which along with HD texture pack makes the game take 151 GB (!!!) of space and cutscenes still look 720p with no AA and tons of color banding) but also obviously don't scale with aspect ratio, so they degrade the overall experience noticeably. Game is also not demanding for most of the time, to the point that I used supersampling with dynamic resolution because this is how much headroom I had even on max settings. Overall the game is unconventional but has a strong idea for itself and generally succeeds, though this is definitely not what you would expect as Middle-earth fan and I still don't understand why we don't have any full fledged game in this universum, something like LOTRO but modern. As good as SoW and especially SoM are as games, they are not even 1/20th of what a true full fledged Middle-earth adaptation should be. Expand

This game is complete and utter sh*t because of those three little words. Prepare to feel nothing but frustration and contempt. Monolith and WB both deserve the firing squad for this malevolent horse sh*t. I won't be buying another title from them for a considerable period of time. I give it a three solely for the remarkable cinematic sequences.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My review is going to be based on actual gameplay for about 40 hours.

    The Good:

The first game shadow of mordor was a refreshing cross between Batman and Assassins creed inspired gameplay in the middle earth world. This game builds up on that and take gameplay further with some cool additions to it, no negatives here. At level 30 and above even on Nemesis difficulty game starts feeling less and less challenging, yet to play act 4 but till now barring couple of tough fights it's been a breeze post level 30. The fortress siege and its defenses sound cool at first but are not that great a mechanism for single player game and yet it has lot of emphasis on it. Graphics are awesome, at ultra getting smooth 60+ fps on gtx 1070 on 1080p which is nice. But this about is the good stuff.

    The Bad :

    1. Story : Frankly not a big fan of the story of this game, feels very uninteresting from the get go, not that first game had best story but still it was better in that aspect of story telling and staying lot closer to the lore.

    2. The Quality of Quests: Granted story quest is bit longer this time around, but you'll spend a lot of time killing uruk captains in various regions and participating into nemesis missions, to make ranger stronger and offcourse finding ideal captain allies based on strengths and weaknesses.

Edit : The grind sort of is unnecessary now and they have removed the store and made some nifty additions such as training uruks which kind of compensates for the RNG probabilities for legendary captains, Revising my score to 8(from original score of 5) after the recent changes. Definitely a good buy now )

The combat, the skill system, the bosses, the story etc. The combat has been further refined, the skills are now more in number and have variations attached to them, there are several actual boss battles in this one unlike the first game where the only real boss fight was the Hammer, and finally the story. While the game doesn't care much for the lore, it tends to stay true to the movie canon. The story, ignoring lore discrepancies, is a good one IMO. It touches upon some really interesting themes and takes quite the interesting twists near the end. The new gear system is amazing and a ton of fun, adding a lot to build variety and such. The open world of Mordor is a joy to play through and experience. Then, of course, there's the Nemesis System. It has seen so much improvement from the first game, it's amazing. More interactions, more types of orcs, more varied and improved trait system, followers are no longer brainless zombies, among many other things. One will have to play it to grasp the full scope of it. It's truly incredible.

From seeing how positive both user reviews on Steam and critical reviews are, it should be obvious to anyone on this page looking for an honest review that the idiots rating it 1-2/10 have never played the game and have tried to review bomb this game over the lootbox controversy. The lootboxes were always useless in this game. Anyone who has played it will tell you that. The orcs you obtain are literally inferior 90% of the time in comparison to orcs you can snag from the open world by just playing the game. There's the Shadow Wars, hailed frequently as being "grindy" and encouraging lootboxes. Nothing could be further than the truth. People call the Shadow Wars (Act IV) grindy because it involves doing a sequence of things (defending/retaking forts) 20 or so times, over and over again. Using lootboxes do not help you here because a) Getting orcs isn't even the issue with Act IV, it's the repetitiveness (which some people like, myself included, since it's the only thing to do once the game's main story is over at the end of Act III) and b) The best orcs in the game assault you during these fort stages (therefore you have quite the endless supply of powerful orcs, making the already useless lootboxes even more useless). The notion that this Act encouraged lootboxes came from an idiotic review by Polygon and another review site, which was furthered by idiotic YouTubers like YongYea and Jim Sterling who never played the game personally to verify the truth of those reviews.

However, all of that matters little now anyway because there's an update coming today (or tomorrow, for some other people), that completely removes the option to purchase lootboxes from the Market (the ability to get them with real money was already removed in May, now the option to get them even with free Gold obtained in-game will be removed along with the entirety of the Market). It's a big update that changes Act IV to be much more streamlined (and adds dialogue and narrative elements), and adds a lot of new things like new gear, new skins etc. The developer, Monolith, has been very good terms of support and as always,. has succeeded once again in making a fantastic game that will have an enduring fanbase. So, my final score for this game would be a definite 10/10, A truly fantastic and enjoyable experience.

The current 3.1 metacritic score is a HAMMERING and justified from launch until this past month when they FINALLY stop asking players to pay to win or go through a god awful grind. Im glad players are finally start to rebel against these predatory practices, and can only hope we continue to fight against this corporate gaming scam thats been brutalizing players and the fun out of games for years now. I do think this game deserves to have players go back and update their reviews now after trying it without the microtransactions. On to my thoughts.

    The Good:
Graphics A+ (mordor looks pretty freakin awesome)
The Story (only made it to act 2 so far but its decent thus far.
Getting Orcs to fight by your side (though i've been having a frustrating time getting this to happen, more on that below).
Finishing Moves and Upgrade system is in depth.

    The Bad:
The enemies arent nearly as a push over like those in Assassins creed, but they're still lacking intelligence or good combat...its manly only the fact they surround you in alot of numbers that gives the illusion of good, "skilled" if you will, fighting. I find the combat system bitter sweet, finishers are nice, but its manly just a hack n slash with alot of frustrations...especially since you cant heal out of combat or use a potion of sorts. Very frustrating trying to finish an enemy off and constantly being trolled by another enemy during the same finishing sequence over and over and over. Programming enemies to be frustrating and to rush over EVERY time you're about to do a finisher is pretty lame IMO. Makes battles long and drawn out, gets pretty repetitive fast, most orcs you'll find yourself just wanting to run around.

    The Ugly:
Whomever programmed the green marked orcs (ones you need to interrogate for information on the armies), I want to talk a long walk off a short pier and get out of the industry, your mechanic you decided on is freaking STUPID..constantly having to chase green marked orcs across the map 20 times for each army across, what like 6 armies is the lamest mechanic and nothing but time consuming filler.

The first few hours I spent being constantly interrupted by pop ups, need this, need that, do this when you get this, do that when you get that...HOLY CRAP..how do you expect anybody to remember all this crap when you flood it in the first 2 hours and harass players like that...learn to spread things out.

    Overall:
I doubt I beat it (or care to) because of the frustrating game mechanics, annoyances, and sheer repetitive filling, but we'll see..as it stands now I'll give it a 6/10. Hard to get above that from me in this day and age, most games just lack the extra time needed to polish or add decent content due to corporate greed wanting to assembly line crap out of door every year. Wish developers would take back their pride and put some more effort into their art...oh wait, its hardly art anymore, thanks for selling out (sarcasm).

Look I like a challenge but this game is like an endless horde mode on some different maps sold as a full price game. And on top of that the enemies literally just SPAWN IN ON TOP OF YOU all the times when battling captains.

I'm really disappointed about those things in a game that could be lore rich (I don't even touch this subject because it has been covered before) and engaging but somehow I lose interest on the rest some hours in.

Despite all the negative comments, I would still make a case for this game and tell you it's a great game to play. Whether it's worth paying full price for, that's up to you. It's very similar to the first (think of it as going from one Assassin's Creed title to another, there's very little difference but some stuff have been added and/or changed).

It's very similar to the first (think of it as going from one Assassin's Creed title to another, there's very little difference but some stuff have been added and/or changed).

Think of this game like an Assassin's Creed (size of map, NPC's walking around, repetitive objectives) mixed with Batman combat (multistreak, skill tree, counter and strike) all in a LOTR setting. Some parts feel like a hack and slash, similar to For Honored but combat is still a lot like Batman.

For those who are not die hard fans of the game, or LOTR in general, it's hard to really find a way to convince you to pay full price for it. I would recommend waiting for a sale but still taking the time to finish it. Despite getting the Gold Edition, I don't know if I see myself playing this when I've completed the game. Right now I'm trying to 100% the game but I am also growing impatient and may just finish the story and be done with it.

One thing I would really change: The mini-cutscene you encouter when facing off against a captian..

EDIT: I have now completed ACT 3.. I've 100%'d everything except the siege missions which are all part of this endgame (ACT 4). My strong recommendation.. all your collectables, but don't waste your time after you've hit ACT 4. It's the same stuff over and over again and everyone is saying just go on youtube and watch the ending (BUT ONLY DO THIS ONCE YOU'VE HIT ACT 4 aka SHADOW WARS).

Despite that, absolutely powerful story! Love it and I'm almost compelled to play though it again.

There are tons of enemies, skills and gear. The unique bosses are fun with a wide variety of weaknesses, strengths and attacks. Controlling enemies to add to your army is a brilliant addition though I've only dabbled in this. The graphics are pretty good but just a hair under some recent new games that I've played. You can tell that this is just an upgrade of the previous game and engine.
Sometimes the controls can be frustrating. I'm trying to climb a wall in a hurry and my character is doing flips at its base. I'm trying to climb to the top of the building and my character stalls because I forget I need to press A to vault up. Pressing too hard on the right stick centers the camera. When mashing dodge keys the camera pops up accidentally. Stuff like this adds up and makes me think the control layout could have been done better, A recent game with similar game-play Assassin's Creed Origins finally got the control down perfect, they should take note.
Though stealth is done well and it's my go to play style in a game like this, getting into combat is a major chore. There are always a TON of enemies around. And, initially, each enemy take 5-6 hits to kill so fights are needlessly long. You will always be taking on a minimum of a half dozen at a time and chances are more will join in. This makes it impossible to chase down intel orcs or if, god-forbid, your target boss retreats. There's no way you can catch him so you'll have to fight him all over again. Sometimes I scout the area and attack when suddenly a new unforeseen orc-boss pops out of nowhere and I'm f**** if I don't run. I don't get that.
Death is so brutal in that the orc that kills you will level up a couple times, some other orcs may level and vacant spots will be filled with new captain recruits. Major buzz kills like this abound.
Aside from those negatives there are plenty of cool surprises in this game and I'll leave you with two. I'm fighting a boss above my level and I nearly have him beaten when he knocks me down for the third time. Usually you get 2 quick-time attempts to save your life and get back into the fight well I failed the one. Just as the axe came down in slow motion, a random soldier of Gondor jumped in and saved my life... killing the low HP boss for me.. THAT WAS JUST AMAZING AND I WENT WILD!! He rattle off some quip about chatty orcs being their demise and ran off into the fight. So cool.
Another equally cool event: another orc had beaten me but refuse to let me die without a real fight so my HP were healed and we fought again, but I beat him the second time. Moments like this give the game so much heart and personality like anything else I've seen.
It's the closest thing to being in a movie.

It combines all these aspects into the lore and world of Tolkien. It isn't canon by any means, but it is an enjoyable story and only the most die-hard fans would have a problem with it. My favorite book and movie ever is The Lord of the Rings, and I'm fine with the liberties this game takes.

As for the microtransactions and loot boxes that people have complained about, it is far overblown. You absolutely do not need a single thing, and I have seen multiple gaming publications repeat that same things. When I read Metacritic and some forums, I would swear that the people complaining have never actually played the game. That said, I wish they weren't there because I don't like them in general and don't like where the games industry is headed with them.

The game is super fun, looks to have 40-60 hours of extended gameplay for just one play-through, and offers ultrawidescreen gaming that performs very well at 3440x1440p on ultra everything with a 1080ti.

There is more variety in the animations and the skills have been organized in a more RPG fashion, which is good. There is also a loot system now with a variety of gear that give interesting bonuses. The nemesis system has aged well, with a wider spectrum of orcs that now you will actualy get to see waging war against each other, with big fortresses as rewards. The story has been greatly improved both in length and dramatism, but it is clearly more concerned about mimicking an action movie than about being consistent with LORT lore. The weakest point of the game is likely its 4th and final act, in which you will spend hours of repeating the same actions over and over again, everything to get an abrupt, not very satisfying, ending. The variety and size in the world are welcomed, but they don't really get to break monotony as you will do mostly the same things in every province.

About the loot boxes, not sure what to think about them. I can only say I've never used them and didn't feel the need at all.

Overall a good game that will benefit as it keeps turning in a more RPG experience, maybe for the 3rd title?

Great skills you got in shadow of Mordor are now broken into 3 or 4 different pieces that you can't use all at once.

There's little evolution in gameplay, maps or anything else. The online vendetta system is broken, so you almost never see missions related to your own friends, but almost always for random people you don't know. Who would want that? And the loot chest rewards are pathetic: a couple of underpowered weapons.

This game needed a lot more innovation, design and structure in order to be worth it, but right now it's just a bigger, more expensive, less fun, less polished version of Shadow of Mordor, with the addition of loot chests and endless grind.

I think that general criticisms are very much mediated by micro-transactions. The game is an acceptable evolution of Shadow of Mordor with a combat system and more balanced difficulty and, therefore, more interesting. The separation of the game spaces in 5 differentiated regions turned out to be a "half-way" success that gives a variety of scenarios, but it is not used because it does not grant unique environmental elements that complement the mechanics of gameplay.

Likewise, the progression of the character feels extremely comfortable, up to level 40 at least. Then the remaining skill points acquired even though they serve to complete the skill tree become relatively complex to acquire. Especially for granting some of them through the progression of missions or collectibles.

I see the most serious flaw in the narrative level, where you do not feel identification or intrigue to explore the story that counts. Added to that practically the game does not take shape until well into chapter II with the most established mechanics. It does not feel organic or fluid in the first instance. It almost seems insipid and irrelevant.

The graphic level seems average, not sublime because it has a nice finish to look at. But it feels "past", almost old in comparison to the titles offered in this same temporality of release.

The real attraction is in the nemesis system, much better complemented by new possibilities and combinations that manage to generate identification with the war chief and captains that you face or dominate. The jewel of the game is here in all its glory.

The management and interface is quite intuitive, it is not annoying and allows you to easily deploy through the selection menus. With the map it is a bit more rudimentary but just as functional.

The Achilles heel falls into a built-in micro-payment system. Although it has no "real" implications for the basic online mode it has, it feels almost a steal for the ridiculously high profits you can acquire in such a short time, which completely breaks the balance of the game and its development during levels and zones. in which the player unfolds. The game is not really bad, but it turned out to be a kick to the consumer's cheek by proposing this semi-pay to win system that completely eliminates the attraction it has to show.

In short: as a sequel is fairly well achieved with points to improve to innovate in narrative and exploitation of a single system in which no one has thought to venture even (the nemesis system). But the micro transactions completely damage the positive that may have and even transgress the player / consumer itself that acquires the title either in pre-sale or on the date of release.

This game does a mighty fine job capturing the Lord of the Rings lore and, even though some liberties were taken with Shelob, it technically did not break the Middle Earth fiction so, fly high. It was enjoyable and delivered on much of the premise of the first game (once you clear a lengthy opening mission set) but then, why the zero rating?

I cannot in good conscious call this a game.

I cannot in good conscious call this a game. It is an EA cash grab and we cannot, as gamers, allow this to become the norm. Lootboxes that provide anything that is not merely cosmetic and require real world money (yes require because the actual time you'll need to log to win what youre looking for is off the chain) are always going to get an instant zero from me.

A shame. This game had some talented folks work on it and I wish the Publishing company didn't have to **** it all up for them. Worth playing but not worth spending your money on.

Single player loot box based microtransactions. automatic 0/10 from me sorry to say
Alongside Cod ww2, destiny 2, star wars battlefront 2 and NFS these are all no buys from me ever.

The gameplay in Shadow of War is superb. The nemesis system returns stronger than ever, and you truly feel like an awesome power-house when taking on a bunch of enemies as Talion.

The reason for my mid-to-low score is the overall story and pacing of the game. It's as if the writers just made a a checklist for some stuff to happen and then extremely quickly glazed over those plot points

The reason for my mid-to-low score is the overall story and pacing of the game. It's as if the writers just made a a checklist for some stuff to happen and then extremely quickly glazed over those plot points in some cutscenes that are far apart in the story. And when the story actually starts to get interesting, the game is suddenly over. (Well, for me the game is over once the shadow wars start, since then it's just a ~10 hour grind to get a final cutscene which I just found on youtube).

I had hoped this game would be better, and I'm surprised that what left a bad taste in my mouth wasn't the microtransactions (which I barely noticed was in the game. I never felt a need for it, even on the Nemesis Diffuculty), but instead it was the story and pacing that made it all fall flat. It's a shame, since the overall gameplay mechanics are really fleshed out and a lot of fun.

I hesitated to buy this based on all the negative reviews. I assumed it would be a non-stop barrage of commercials for the microtransactions. But I really enjoyed the original, so I took a chance. Now I'm 20+ hours into playing on medium difficulty, and have not been harassed to buy anything even once. Nor have I been seriously tempted to look into it. I know there are boosts and gear II hesitated to buy this based on all the negative reviews. I know there are boosts and gear I can buy, but I'm progressing at a satisfying pace without them. Maybe I'll get to the end and be frustrated by some pay wall or whatever, but even if so, I don't think it will be that big of a deal for me in light of the numerous hours I've enjoyed already. I would probably ignore the paywall and move on to the next game, per my usual.

So putting aside the nothing burger (for me anyway) that is all the negative hype about the microtransactions, I am really impressed with the game and I'm enjoying it. The graphics and gameplay are great and I've had no issues with bugs. If you liked the original, you'll love this one. Just ignore the haters and don't buy anything extra if you don't want. Simple.

Game is fun, well executed, bigger. It takes the good things from the first one and improve them. Micro transactions is NOT an issue ; got money to spend ? Go ahead. Don’t want to ? No problem, earn your perks in game. I am near my play trough, at around 60 hours of fun (with vendetta and online fortress). Money well spend.

This game has microtransactions in it. I do not support it, thus it shouldn't be supported. If publishers continue to implement these, those games will voted down. Loot Boxes with MT won't be toleranced.

I completed the game yesterday and i liked the game shadow of war is much better than mordor and i recomend this game to all who love tolkin's world and action adventure games.
But unfortunately reviewer didn't give a real score that is comfortable for this game but shadow of war is one of five best games in 2017 and i think the real suitable meta score for this game could be about 90

The sieges in this game is a complete and utter boring and broken mess. For one your captains are **** complete and utter **** And it the latter stages of the Shadow Wars campaign the AI just bum rush you with like 20 of their captains to just spam your points so you can't defend at all. Do you wanna dominate mind on a broken captain? Well you are lucky if Talion wants to **** target the dumbass infront of you instead of some random **** like 20 yards behind you.

The enemy trash mobs just spawn out of air and nothing. And enraged captains are OP ****. Last siege that made me rage quit out of this ****ty game had a captain just murder like 6 of my captains my himself and he was constantly enraged and healed up. Bugged? Probably so.

There were parts of the game i enjoyed but there is too much **** in the game that drags it down. Such as the dragon vs balrog QTE fight, was also janky crap.

If there was any way to give this game a 10 I would try to do it because I really enjoyed the first one and I love the Tolkien universe dearly.
Hopes were high for Shadow of War and I even took time off from work on release to sit down and really devote some time to it. The game is pretty much a copy of the first in terms of game-play but with more stuff thrown in on every element plus

Visuals are good, mood is still good and the story is engaging for the most part aside from the addition of a couple of non canon characters who are a mixed bag (Carnan is beyond irritating).
But the problem with this sequel is that it seems to drain the magic out of the experience by turning into a chaotic mess that quickly becomes a by-the-numbers open world game livened up only by the excellent nemesis system.
I could point to other weak social justice propaganda inclusions like a female Gondorian soldier and a black Gondorian (though the game tries to justify this by saying he's one of the Haradrim who joined Gondor and it almost works). Problem with social justice crusading in games is that unless you give some meaning to your social engineering within the context of the game world everyone knows its just a 'diversity' hire which cheapens the whole experience and shows no respect for the source material. That said, its not that bad and the characters seem passable if you can forgive the snub to the lore.
But the cardinal sin committed here is the introduction of loot boxes in a single player game - absolutely unforgivable.
Overall... bit of a disappointment really.

Naturally you can buy experience boosters with real money! And just like for junkies, the first lootbox is always free! Making sure to catch all the people who are predisposed to spending money on being exploited like this.

Its all well and good until they hide the ending behind hours of grinding, so that they can try to sell you shortcuts in loot boxes. Don't buy this if you are the kind of unreasonable purist who thinks that a $60 game should be designed to be fun, rather being designed to manipulate you into paying more money to skip boring content.

I’m about to break most of your hearts, I didn’t like shadow of war as much as every other reviewer…
As to me this game feels like a soulless cash grab
Shadow of War is the sequel to the much better middle earth shadow of Mordor..
You once again play as Talion who sets out to bring balance to middle earth...
As a less personal story compared to the first... the game struggled to keep my attention with its story or world…
Basically Shadow of War feels like more of the same with none of the heart…
It’s a cash grab riding off of the success of the original…
The world is much larger this time, but bigger isn’t always better as every area in this game feels generic and unmemorable…
Back are the assassins creed like syncing point that lets you scout out this games collectables to unlock new moves in the skill tree…
Skill wise there isn’t anything special…
You’ll easily have every skill unlocked by time you reach the end of act 3 which takes around 19 hours.. and is the base of this games story…
skills for the most part unlock moves you had in the first game though they have 1 of 3 modifiers that take away their annoyances from the first game like allowing celebrimbor to counter attacks while you’re doing a ground finish or add an elemental effect to a special attack like poison or fire for example…
There’s also a really cool weapon and rune system here where you can craft runes to give you boosts like xp or life drain.. and each rare, epic, and legendary weapon or clothing item has a challenge attached to them that will unlock a perk… giving a little personality to each
These items of course picked up off of orcs with the same rarity
Getting rid of the annoyances is the best shadow of war does, you’re now able to run extremely fast taking away the annoying fleeing enemy moments and there’s a cool double jump added to the parquor making you feel like you’re a super hero running through the game..
Which honestly may be the reason I feel this world is so forgettable…
I’m able to get around it so quickly that I never had the opportunity to notice or care about my surroundings…
a new change that I’m not a fan of is the fact that special moves are now tied to a meter instead of attack chains… of course this meter is the only way to make this games boss encounters work... but I felt like I was less in control and that building up uninterrupted attack chains was unrewarded…
a mix of both systems in the next game if one comes would be cool… where successful chains fills the meter at a faster rate than were given here….
There’s also an eleven rage meter that lets you unleash multiple attacks while invincible, but this meter takes so ridiculously long to fill up that it might as well not even exist... I used it probably 4 times my entire time playing because I would save it as a just in case thing…
The nemesis system is back once again but this time the game from the jump is focused on domination after the first act...
It’s up to you to go and capture 4 towers to get to the end of the games story…
though I found myself gaining followers naturally through story, I didn’t have to do much hunting towards the end…however in the first few hours, this domination thing is annoying as you’re only able to capture orcs at your same level or lower…
you’re able to humiliate them and lower their level.. But all this does is make them run away and forces you to have to go find them again somewhere else…
this to me felt like the game just wasting the players time...
I see no harm in letting the player just take the orc at a lower level and letting them move on..
With your orcs you can command them to kill other orcs or prove themselves and become the bodyguard of a warchief... you can assign an orc to be your bodyguard to help you in combat…you can also go capture the bodyguards of warchiefs and have them betray… making their battles easier as you can take out each warchief individually to lower the level of a fortress greatly with each one…
While you’re doing these hunts and gathering intel for the weakness on your next target you have to be warry of how you treat your followers, as they’re able to betray you as well…
and once you feel you’re ready to take on a fortress you assign your orcs to positions, you give them weapons and armies to increase your odds of success and you charge in to take what’s yours…
The review has a bit of a negative tone, but Shadow of War is a really good game….
Its more of the really great shadow of Mordor with deeper systems and less annoyances…
But to me it also has less heart and soul…
This is an enjoyable experience.. But a very forgettable one…
I give Middle Earth Shadow of War
    a 7.5/10

Last review appears to have been deleted. Was really looking forward to this game until the developer and publisher decided to be greedy. I'm tired of companies charging us $60 for only part of a game then bilking us through loot boxes and DLCs.

At this point the only way I'll play this game is when it becomes a bargain basement-priced GOTY version.

Expand

A huge game that, despite of the quality of the fight and the delight of the Orb, offers paradoxically very small. It's not a failure, but we were expecting more. [Issue#279]

Nemesis is a one-hit wonder of a mechanic. Everything else in Middle-earth is mediocre at best, but Nemesis makes it all worthwhile, since every playthrough is truly unique – a feature none of its triple-A competitors can offer. [Issue#225, p.38]

A lot of people were upset to find out that Shadow of War has loot boxes, and they are kind of annoying. Unfortunately, loot boxes is the least of its problems.
