Could be good game but you destroyed it with Loot boxes and microtransactions. I boycott this practice (you know what way) with my friends. You won't see penny. Great game, pretty much the same as SoM just with a lot of extra stuff (Loot/gear, more orcs, larger map etc). There is also a lot more to do and you WILL have to do a lot more to simply earn in game currency to buy loot boxes. This is the downfall of the entire game IMHO. Totally disgusting. Logic says if you gonna not give all the content away for the original price then make that original price much lower. I'd have been happy to purchase loot boxes if the game had cost £20.
Avoid if you have a "cant-help-myself" personality but a very low budget.

Overall if the game didnt have MTA system I'd give it 8/10, with MTA I give it a 4

I don't know what game the "journalists" played but this game is god awful. It is full of repetitive tasks to do all over the map, the combat attempts to be like Arkham Knight but is more like Assassins Creed Syndacate, but it doesn't have a good story like either of those games. This game feels like it was designed from the top down to encourage you to use the loot crates and purchase items with real money. This isn't even a game. It's gambling with real money for in game items disguised as a Lord or the Rings game. This is not a detail oriented or well designed game. It's some mechanics with 6 different types of tasks repeated and scattered across a cheap lazily designed open world. The graphics are not pretty to look at, the orcs look childish and stupid, not scary at all. The combat is not challenging and it's very repetitive. The main quests are not interesting at all. Pretty much a blur of hyperbole. The reason that people are liking this game is because it's addictive, because it was designed to be addictive from the ground up. It is in no objective way a good game. I would go as far to say that it's not really a video game. It's a gambling machine. Expand

You would've thought Warner Bros. might have learned a lesson with their spectacularly bad Arkham Knight launch but no. We get a triple whammy of scumminess this year with them first trying to sell the memory of a dead developer as paid DLC. Then the Developers come out and tell everyone you may never even have to use the Lootboxes or buy using Microtransactions to enjoy the game and it's only there for people 'who don't have time to play the game'. And the icing on the cake is the Story being locked behind a paywall.

This game does a mighty fine job capturing the Lord of the Rings lore and, even though some liberties were taken with Shelob, it technically did not break the Middle Earth fiction so, fly high. It was enjoyable and delivered on much of the premise of the first game (once you clear a lengthy opening mission set) but then, why the zero rating?

Lootboxes that provide anything that is not merely cosmetic and require real world money (yes require because the actual time you'll need to log to win what youre looking for is off the chain) are always going to get an instant zero from me.

The greed is getting out of hand and its destroying the things we love. I love gaming its my number one hobby yet the last couple of years has been pure HELL when its comes to (DLCs and Microtransactions) We already pay full price for the games why do we have to pay more?

The current 3.1 metacritic score is a HAMMERING and justified from launch until this past month when they FINALLY stop asking players to pay to win or go through a god awful grind. Im glad players are finally start to rebel against these predatory practices, and can only hope we continue to fight against this corporate gaming scam thats been brutalizing players and the fun out of games for years now. I do think this game deserves to have players go back and update their reviews now after trying it without the microtransactions. On to my thoughts.

    The Good:
Graphics A+ (mordor looks pretty freakin awesome)
The Story (only made it to act 2 so far but its decent thus far.
Getting Orcs to fight by your side (though i've been having a frustrating time getting this to happen, more on that below).
Finishing Moves and Upgrade system is in depth.

    The Bad:
The enemies arent nearly as a push over like those in Assassins creed, but they're still lacking intelligence or good combat...its manly only the fact they surround you in alot of numbers that gives the illusion of good, "skilled" if you will, fighting. I find the combat system bitter sweet, finishers are nice, but its manly just a hack n slash with alot of frustrations...especially since you cant heal out of combat or use a potion of sorts. Very frustrating trying to finish an enemy off and constantly being trolled by another enemy during the same finishing sequence over and over and over. Programming enemies to be frustrating and to rush over EVERY time you're about to do a finisher is pretty lame IMO. Makes battles long and drawn out, gets pretty repetitive fast, most orcs you'll find yourself just wanting to run around.

    The Ugly:
Whomever programmed the green marked orcs (ones you need to interrogate for information on the armies), I want to talk a long walk off a short pier and get out of the industry, your mechanic you decided on is freaking STUPID..constantly having to chase green marked orcs across the map 20 times for each army across, what like 6 armies is the lamest mechanic and nothing but time consuming filler.

The first few hours I spent being constantly interrupted by pop ups, need this, need that, do this when you get this, do that when you get that...HOLY CRAP..how do you expect anybody to remember all this crap when you flood it in the first 2 hours and harass players like that...learn to spread things out.

    Overall:
I doubt I beat it (or care to) because of the frustrating game mechanics, annoyances, and sheer repetitive filling, but we'll see..as it stands now I'll give it a 6/10. Hard to get above that from me in this day and age, most games just lack the extra time needed to polish or add decent content due to corporate greed wanting to assembly line crap out of door every year. Wish developers would take back their pride and put some more effort into their art...oh wait, its hardly art anymore, thanks for selling out (sarcasm).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is an example why piracy will continue to grow. The story is fine, might get repetitive at some point but I was having fun till that happened. However, the game lags, freezes, sometimes also crashes. Loading a fortress defence takes about 5-10 minutes each time, while assigning a captain for a slot freezes the game for another 2-4 minutes for every 6 or 7 slots. As for the gameplay, some perks such as "no chance" or "adapted" are unfun to play against. Who the hell thought that if you die during a fortress defence, it is a loss already? It means that your captains automatically flee or won't fight anymore? A pity. Defending it is such a mess anyways, if your captains die in a middle of enemies, you have no chance to revive them because there is no way to target them, system will target anyone but him. But at least we have microtransactions in a 60$ game :D Expand

When the game started, I discovered that if I declined the Terms of Service, I could disable the Market and all Loot Box content (including the Silver Edition Lootboxes I paid an extra $20 for). Therefore no one can look at my opinion and think I'm biased just because of Microtransactions, because in my gameplay, they were entirely disabled.

This game is equivalent to the very first Assassin's Creed, but with a Lord Of The Rings reskin, written and directed by a greedy fanboy. The content is functional but limited. The story is average, occasionally boosted by likable and even humorous orcs, yet at the same time often feels soulless. The gameplay is functional, but nothing truly unique when compared to other games of the recent past. The randomly generated orcs...both the best, and worst part of the game: they're creative in design, ability and behavior; yet they are the spawned outcome of a randomly generated number that the game decides without any regard for your action or playstyle, because they're based on the integrated Lootbox system, and are therefore not supposed to be unique—otherwise orcs from Lootboxes would be different from orcs found in gameplay, and render the microtransaction system less beneficial.

This is the summation of my thoughts, based on the time I spent playing (again, with a Disabled Market/Microtransactions/Lootboxes).

I loved Shadow Of Mordor, I had high hopes for Shadow Of War. Sadly, the horrific impact of Warner Brothers has left a stain on the game, if not the franchise, through it's continued mishandling of intellectual property: within which WB itself would be the enemy of mankind, were J.R.R. Tolkien himself to write an adaptation of this story, in addition to flagrant disregard for ethics; specifically towards what is becoming legally recognized as a form of gambling (Lootboxes), in addition to avoiding labor laws on other projects, not to mention the whole controversy surrounding the death of a Monolith Developer. Bottom line, what could have been an enjoyable experience has been twisted and warped, and is hardly the game I had been hoping for.

It's got a overall Mostly Positive rating on Steam. I'm not one to judge the community; if people like it, great. If you yourself enjoy this game, then do have fun with it. But despite wanting to like it, I couldn't enjoy Shadow of War. Whatever heart was poured into this game, was utterly corrupted by greed, as demonstrated by one particular scene:

Let me call to your attention a moment where one of the orcs you encounter who is important to the story. After joining the protagonist's side, he offers to share his knowledge with Talion regarding orcs and how they function. There's a cutscene that plays, in order to explain specifically, the Combat Arena: a "minigame" that is essentially nothing more than a mobile game: you select one of your orcs, and your orc duels an enemy orc. You have no influence over the outcome, essentially making it a 'game of chance' (I won't insult your intelligence by pointing out what that technically is). During this cutscene, the orc, who is written to be friendly and likable, speaks to you—not Talion, the character—but to you, the player, in a first-person cutscene, in which his dialogue is explicitly written to compel you to give this 'minigame' a try, with the outcome potentially coercing or forcing you to buy microtransaction orcs to get better results.

With the potential present in which your orc will be killed, and the only options for regaining orcs being lengthy gameplay to recruit orcs, or the easier option of "buying orcs" via Lootboxes, I'd hope that anyone, even those without a comprehensive understanding of Gambling Mechanics, Advertisement, Marketing and Business principles, can recognize how this system is inherently designed to guide a player (who has already spent between $60 - $100), to invest more time or real-world money, in this situation. I won't get into the ethics of it, but I will point out that there was a time when games were built to be played and enjoyed first and foremost, not to be tools that, in a very real sense, scheme to manipulate gamers into emptying their wallets further.

But Monolith compromised the integrity of their game in order to include them. And that i think is a real shame. The second is that the end of the game was a chore. So much so i didnt bother trying to do all of it and just watched the ending on YouTube. And the reason it was such a chore is because they had to make their monetisation system seem worthwhile in buying. Even with them removed the game was still a drag. Monolith and WB both deserve the firing squad for this malevolent horse sh*t. I won't be buying another title from them for a considerable period of time. I give it a three solely for the remarkable cinematic sequences.

Boss animations. There will be a point when you get so annoyed and tired from the unskippable animations of enemies making cringe statements. It was cool the first three hours but then it will just waste the time.

The story is luckily entertaining that until the end, where everything feels so rushy. It's as if they expect the players to be LOTR experts. It looks like they just skipped some major stories to explain the upcoming events. I know that the game is referencing to the film series but also it would be helpful if they just kept the same pace and not make the ending look like an unfinished game. Can't be that hard if you just recycle most things from the previous game, right? Horrible finish of the main character's story

Act 4 is a massive grind, purely to try to force the player to purchase their gambling boxes, coming from a full-price """Triple-A""" video game with massive marketing, multiple overpriced editions, sponsorship deals, and god knows what else, but none of that was enough money for WB.

    1) microtransactions in a single player game
    2) gambling via Loot Cases (great for the kids !!)
    3) pay to winskip
    4) preorder DLC

You pay for a game with the true ending behind a paywall. Microtransactions are the new cancer that is destroying videogames. They ruined a game with a lot of potential because of greed. Do not buy it until they change their policy.

Do not buy! **** micro transactions, as predicted. Apart from that decent game, but a lot of gridning... sigh. Vote with your wallet guys, so skip this one.

The worst money making I have seen in a Triple-A game so far: first charging 60 dollars for the game, then demanding microtransactions to see the end of the game. Almost impossible to beat the game without buying better warchiefs and captains. Hate this game right now. The beginning was good but this policy of charging more money to see the end is simply a shame!

**** microtransactions. If you want to play this game, pirate it instead. I will never pay for a game that has full price + microtransactions. If they want to add microtransactions, make the game free!

I really enjoyed the 1st Shadow of Mordor, unfortunately Shadow of War not so much, lot of reused assets, repeated missions, average story, And a god damn microtransactions.
the online feature needs lot of improvements.

It is sad that we have reached a point where games publishers think that charging full price for a game isn't enough; instead they want more money by giving the player incentive to pay for loot boxes. It is especially sad because the game itself is so good.

DLC...Microtransactions bullcrap all over the place...And if you support this you are making the gamimg industry worse and worse!

worst game ever they are trying to rip us off micro transactions in a single player game and this game is not even free its paid for + all the bugs in raising dead captains and in changing captains traits

Apart from micro-transactions (which is plain daylight robbery) this game has dull combat and repetitive game play. The combat has a mind of its own. You click a button wanting to do one thing and it will do something else entirely. The repetitiveness, grinding and sub par combat becomes annoying that you either rush through the story for the sake of it or quit.

История игры не как не связана с миром Толкина, графика плохая, мир скудный, квесты отсутствую. Всю игру вы должны гриндить монстров...................

I'm just here to say that microtransactions in full-priced games are a cancer on the gaming industry, that's spreading as fast as we're allowing it to. Lootboxes manage to be even worse. I can't stand them on multiplayer games but single player? F**k off.

Mololith has created a phenomenal game. If you enjoyed the previous iteration, or any of the Arkham games, you'll probably like this one.

As a result I, too, am forced to make a business decision and give this game a thumbsdown, to be changed to a thumbs up upon removal or extreme gutting of the lootcrate system and an extreme price decrease on the DLC. A Triple-A title should not cost $100 to access all of its features, and businesses need to start being punished for thinking they can make that the status quo.

Good job, Monolith. ♥♥♥♥ yourself, WB.

Its all well and good until they hide the ending behind hours of grinding, so that they can try to sell you shortcuts in loot boxes. Don't buy this if you are the kind of unreasonable purist who thinks that a $60 game should be designed to be fun, rather being designed to manipulate you into paying more money to skip boring content.

A huge game that, despite of the quality of the fight and the delight of the Orb, offers paradoxically very small. It's not a failure, but we were expecting more. [Issue#279]

Nemesis is a one-hit wonder of a mechanic. Everything else in Middle-earth is mediocre at best, but Nemesis makes it all worthwhile, since every playthrough is truly unique – a feature none of its triple-A competitors can offer. [Issue#225, p.38]

A lot of people were upset to find out that Shadow of War has loot boxes, and they are kind of annoying. Unfortunately, loot boxes is the least of its problems.
