Nov 3, 2022A great concept with rewarding moments of gameplay that is only slightly hampered by a handful of little things, as well as the omission of other things. A little more enemy variety, a little less level wandering and a tightening up of other aspects would have made this game a real rock concert for the ages. But it’s still an entertaining effort that was worth the trip to the back alley….or a friend’s garage, or wherever it is people go to listen to concerts these days.

Edge MagazineOct 6, 2022Hours after closing the game, we often find ourselves absent-mindedly drumming a table or walking in step to a song we'd never pick out normally. It's in our bones now. [Issue#377, p.112]

Sep 23, 2022The more focus a player can give to Metal: Hellsinger, the more it shines. When it all clicks, a flow builds that can only be achieved by this style of rhythmic combat. It takes some powerful music and grafts it onto the iconic Doom formula. The result is that the player feels like they are in the middle of a perfectly choreographed movie or trailer. It's certainly challenging, especially on higher difficulties, but if players can think of it as less a shooter and more a rhythm game, it really opens up. Lack of enemy variety and short gameplay aside, what's on offer here is a hugely fun rip through Hell that feels great to play and sounds like something torn straight out of a nightmare - in a good way.
-
Sep 15, 2022The elements are there to create something truly special, but right now Metal: Hellsinger feels more like a Doom Eternal mod than it does a standalone title.
-
Sep 12, 2022Metal: Hellsinger is an exciting genre fusion with a great soundtrack. Scope, arsenal, boss design and enemy variety leave a lot to be desired.
-
Sep 12, 2022More than just a Doom clone and despite faltering during what should be the game’s highlights this is an enjoyable romp for both metal and shooter fans alike.
-
Sep 12, 2022Metal: Hellsinger might not be the greatest demon-slaying shoot 'em up in the world, but it's certainly a stirring tribute.
-
Sep 21, 2022Metal: Hellsinger delivers a rhythm FPS with a killer soundtrack that does justice to the music genre; no more, no less. It sets the stage nicely for a stronger sophomore effort, but for now it's just an opening act.
-
Oct 7, 2022Metal: Hellsinger, despite having a very original gameplay and very good music, falls short in terms of design and variety and leaves just a metallic taste in the mouth.
-
Sep 12, 2022Metal Hellsinger’s rhythm-driven gameplay is something special, though it's marred by an uninteresting story and repetitive design.
-
Sep 12, 2022Rather modest in the end, Metal Hellsinger is a nice game with a great concept and music that accompanies it perfectly. You can spend a handful of intense hours playing it without regret, in order to experience its innovative gameplay. However, you have to be interested in the scoring based on the rhythmic aspect to linger on it, since it doesn't have much else to offer afterwards.
-
Sep 14, 2022And yet that monomaniacal approach is both a blessing and a curse. Devotees will doubtless spend enjoyable hours perfecting their runs but those not so enamoured with Metal: Hellsinger’s central conceit might find the whole thing a little… one note.
-
Sep 12, 2022If Doom is a jam session that gives players space to improvise, Metal: Hellsinger is a high school recital. There’s only so far you can stray from the sheet music.

Sep 29, 2022Its premise of linking shooting to the rhythm of its heavy metal tunes is an idea that works even better than on paper, but it's also a fast-paced, precise and well-constructed shooter. [Recommended]
-
Sep 12, 2022A lean and tightly-restrained mashup of more than just Rock Band and Doom, Metal: Hellsinger captures the earnest spirit of an underloved genre. [Eurogamer Recommended]

Sep 12, 2022It’s hard to picture Metal: Hellsinger being as memorable as it is without its lineup of popular artists. After all, the soundtrack can’t be divorced from the game’s main appeal. But even though I would have liked to see more risks being taken with its core pillars (similar to BPM: Bullets Per Minute’s experiments with roguelike elements and more varied weapons), Metal: Hellsinger achieves a pulsating, vibrant synergy, and it knows how to pull your strings.

Sep 13, 2022If you love Doom and you're the kind of Guitar Hero player who wants to 100% Through The Fire And Flames, then I think Metal: Hellsinger might have you obsessed. For me - who only played Guitar Hero on Normal mode at parties, and whose only understanding of heavy metal comes from Wayne's World - it remained an excellent five hours. Party on.
