There are so much love and details in the game that it really sad to see tons of toxic comments and poor marks. The game is huge, and fun to play, there are some repetitive quests but they are even stored in a separate folder and have zero influence on anything and are there for completionists (as chests are in Assassin Creed). It totally delivered on all I expected from it and above from a Mass Effect game. The only advice I would like to give is not to rush in but just give yourself to immerse yourselves in the world and pay attention to detail. Expand

It is huge and beautiful, with countless options.
If you liked ME1, you will probably love this game. If you new to the universe go in it without bias, even if this ridiculous 0 points reviews makes that hard for some. Zero and one points reviews are simply ridiculous if it comes to this game, have no doupt about that. I respect people who give 4, 5 or 6 points because the game is not as they wanted or expected it to be, but 0 or 1 points clearly show that there is a bias that leads to such a score in the first place.

Worth the wait and a fine new starting point. The writing and character development are different enough that you don't feel like they're trying to recreate a new Shepard, which is what I was wanting for this game.

(Bugisoft, Bugthesda, etc)

The game is definitely buggy but not worth a 0/10 with any perspective.
The game's main story is fine-ish, it isn't great; but the game shines in player stories, ryder is but a vessel for the player to express themselves and mold the world accordingly. Each friend mission and heleus assignment is a literal ride for players to actually role-play as a pathfinder; does the player keep on focusing on just his vengeance against the archon or does he help the angara, etc.
The world is brimming with potential; Though sadly we won't be seeing our decisions take fruition in the next part(i really do hope EA reconsider it)
The gameplay is simply put fun. On hard it is challenging enough to be fun without being pathetically imbalanced against the player; if i died i felt like it was my f*** up rather than cheap damage from enemies. The enhanced mobility in combat adds more than just speed to the combat but verticality also. The weapons are satisfying to use, the exploration is fun as well though platforming feels like a missed opportunity here. The AI though leaves a bit to be desired as sometimes they are smart to flank you and even flush you out of cover using grenades etc. forcing you to use the mobility that you have but sometimes they get stuck in between deciding whom to target(happened to me in 10% encounters across the 50 hour playthrough). The new dynamic profile system is fun to tinker with as well
The graphics are a mixed bag; facial animations suck to be put bluntly(Except for those few scenes which seem animated differently). The environment on the other hand though ranges from breath-takingly gorgeous or just meh(still miles ahead of stuff like no man's sky or the planet explored in previous mass effects). The moment when your ship docks in and you view the planet on foot is always makes you feel enticed to explore it.
The music is good, not too bad not too great but it does fit in well with whatever happens on screen(At least on my playthrough)
The menus are good and easy to navigate but they are overly done, to the point of being irritating. Even after the skip patch the planet zoom in to zoom out remains which loses novelty after first 3 times and then becomes irritating.
Overall, even after the patches the game remains buggy but never enough to outshine its strengths. The game is easily a 7.5/10(have to give 8 as metacritc doesn't have decimal ratings). Fun to play and a great sandbox to roleplay your character in; if you can bear through the irritating menus and occasional glitching

The dynamic narrative choices are unmatched. The characters have so much depth. This game is both incredible and fun. I am not sure when I will ever have time to play a different video game again. To address the flaws, it is a huge game and the bugs are being fixed. Some of the animations are what they are. This is a massive video game that offers so much. A crooked smile should not ruin your experience. The game does start slow after the intro, but, WOW, does it open up after your first planet. I seriously don't know why people are complaining this much about ME:Andromeda. The 0/4 scores are purely from fan-boys or people hating on something particular (like the animation non-sense I talked about before), there is no way that this game could have that low score.

So, the bad stuff first. Unpolished. Obvisously, release date has been pushed by EA. Most of bugs and animation flightches were fixed with patch 1.05 thankfully and for the most part it now runs smoothly. Second, main story feels bit like filler. We never get that real feeling of kett dread except in one scene. Three, lot of decisions within the game see no consequence with vague promise of it being seen in future DLCs, new game. Which would be normally fine, but seems to be that too many things have been thrown in that category and there are multiple quests that seems thanks to it unfinished (eg Benefactor one). Inventory system needs to be remapped and so does research and development.

Good things: Exploration. Narrow corridors of ME2 and 3 are gone, replaced by open world and return of exploration feeligns that many loved in ME1 (though there it was unpolished as hell). Combat. Again, 2D combat zone with cover-and-shoot system is gone. Open fields and verticality now rule and its all for the better. Writing of side quests which sold this game for me and made me nuke 90 hours inside first full playthrough. Aside of generic task quests (seriously, just ditch them) the side quests have all a smaller or greater story and will keep you interested in game.

PS: I dont care about graphics. I still enjoy KOTOR 14 years after I played it first time and graphics doesnt bother me. Besides, graphics is strong pull here and some awkward facial animation (to be honest, noticed that only once) is really something that matters not to me and for those who have nothing else to say, it makes you look like nitpickers who just want to hate but are struggling to find a reason. Seriously, how many of you 0/10, 1/10 and 3/10 even frickin played this game? Not many probably.

TLDR: Most of flaws here are of technical character, with others being something that could have been done better, but it isnt deal-breaker. It sets a solid ground for new spin-off franchise and am interested in seeing it develop in the future.

Story and characters are weaker than ME2 (the high point of the series IMO). It's not a particularly challenging game, but then neither were the previous three entries. The game provides a good experience because it puts exploration front and center, has a pretty decent story, and contains serviceable characters. I have found a few bugs (for example I get certain messages before I'm supposed to) but nothing that a game reload won't fix. The dialog is weaker than previous games but not infantile as some suggest.

I have to say that I'm amazed at the rage being vented against ME:A. Many complain of the scanning and gathering elements, but I think they actually enhance the feel of exploration. If you wanted a story of ME2 quality, I can see where you might be disappointed, but several of the highly negative reviews I've read have little in common with my experience.

Dialogue is good, but you can tell that Bioware tried to break a lot of character tropes that were built in the original trilogy.

But this game was better than what i expected by much , in fact it was the first game since fallout new vegas that got me playing non stop every minute that i had free.

    The good:
_Mass effect 2 dialog system but better
_Mass effect 1 exploration system but much better
_Your squad members are very interesting and have great quests not just a "do this and im loyal" but actually quest that unlock other quests.
_An incredible ammount of interesting side quest that you really dont have to do but are there to do if you want , this is epic because its like a fallout game , you have epic quest that could never do if you did not care.
_The combat system is great , basically you have mass effect 1 exploration with mass effect 3 combat.
    _The main story is great.
_You actually have many character reactions to everything that happens in the story.
_The feeling of being alone in a dangerous galaxy is there.

    The bad:
_The animations are not as good as in mass effect 2 or 3 but considering that this game is longer than mass effect 2 and 3 combined and it has a masive number of side quest it is not really a problem ,mass effect 2 and 3 where more about cinematic effects about a story.
Andromeda is more about exploration like mass effect 1 so the animations are not as good but they are not terrible as the bad reviews say.
_There are some animation bugs but they are really minor and will be fixed.
_The fact that the game is based on exploration makes me think that ea will force bioware to sell a **** of DLC before they start working on a second game to finish the story.
_The vehicle for exploration should have weapons , its really not as much fun exploring if you need to stop to fight some idiots in the way , this was better in mass effect 1.

Ugly? Right, animations ARE really bad. But to be honest? After few hours I stopped to take care about it. This game have really good characters, I just love my teammates and humour in a lot of scenes. The story is good, I'm really interested what is next. Don't listen all the malcontents, try yourself. It's great game and ertainly do not deserve soo low score...

Not as bad as people are saying it is. A lot EA bashing going on here. A lot of people who obviously haven't even played the game posting negative reviews.

Planetside exploration is reminiscent of Mass Effect 1 except the planets have more content and there are no filler planets (so far). Action is the best of all Mass Effect games. The new galaxy and characters don't have the same emotional attachment as in the previous games eventually had but it has potential. Ryder in particular isn't "black slate" type of character like Shepard. Her dialogue fits her character very well regardless of option.

There are some nitpicking that bothered me a bit scifi-wise. With those quantum entanglement communicators one would think they'd place one on Milky Way to keep communicationg with the fleet. Less emotional attachment to the characters too, though I like the crew. Game also starts bit slowly and there is lot to take in when it gets going.

But I didn't even notice that those "facial animations" are supposedly bad. Wow.

I was constantly curious of what laid ahead next and I am not just talking about the main story. There are many different items to find, develop, and research so it feels really rewarding when you get something ultra rare. The combat isn't perfect either, but it is fun and it hasn't gotten old for me. I actually almost didn't buy this game because of all the negative reviews and crap on youtube. That being said, i went with my gut feeling and bought it. I am still glad i did. This could have been game of the year if the issues that everyone has been claimed about been fixed. I am going to give this game a 10 just to even out the negative, even though its actually a 8 for me. Mass Effect Andromeda is an ambitious game with a wonderful core and expansive universe with a ton of lore and back story to draw from. At first I was somewhat lost at seeing the Sheppard story being left behind along with the Reapers and most things that we had grown accustomed to in the previous Trilogy. After the first few hours I began to see the new story unfold and the characters develop. Some characters that I did not care for in the beginning ended up being some of my favorite characters by the end. Bioware has delivered on thier epic story telling. With decent voice acting (all though silly at times) you begin to feel a sense of connection with every character. Before I go into anymore detail here is a list of pros and cons.

    Pros
    - Great Gameplay. Combat is a blast.
    - Epic Bioware story telling.
    - Strong new Protagonists that is quite a good sense of humor.
    - So much to do! Finished the game at 85 hours and still had a lot more to do.

    Cons
    - some bugged missions. 5 on my playthrough uncompletable
    - yes some of the character animations are bad but only on a few faces. Addison being the worst of them.
    - no real introduction to crafting. One of the crafting types i was hard pressed to max it out. Maybe it is this way by design?
    - few times characters would talk to me about story line stuff that happened hours before, yet they treated it like it was 5 minutes ago.
    - I did not really feel the need to utilize the class change system in any way shape or form.
    - No skip option on when you travel from planet to planet. It some cases u gotta sit through the ship flying for up to 30 seconds.....

Regardless of the cons I loved this game and would recommend it to any fan of the series. This is a game that needs to played through before forming an opinion of how good it is or not. It is not a perfect game but it definitely is a good game.

Played the game now for +25 hours including multiplayer.
    Single player:
The storyline is good to very well. Whereas the missions in Me2/3 were mainly scripted, you now have huge exploration and freedom. This gives you the feeling of loneliness and doubt whenever you chose to alter the timeline of mission solving. Even the upgrades on vehicle and other items influence the environment.

Combat and movement is far better than the original series.
On the other hand, my experience as a games tester has led me to quite a few areas where you make the game glitch But the more you let players wander around and give the freedom, the more the game is prone to such glitches. So nothing really game breaking.
The only minor point for me in the single player is the quality of facial expression or better the lack of. For me it does push you away from the storyline sometimes.
The problems with limbs etc colliding does occasionally happen. But in that respect not more/less than any other game. You are bound to start finding a lot of them if you are actually searching for flaws. But that happens with all games.
The scanning, crafting, selling, developing, gives the game more depth and gives you as the player the feeling that you have the choice to make you character unique.

Overall the single player is very good!

    Multiplayer:
Action packed, and pretty difficult. I have +400 hours on the multiplayer of ME3. But Im still getting used to this one. It does feel a little more tight than the original one. I don't quite now how to put it. It is great fun, but still have to explore it. So for now a 7.5/10 on the MP.

It certainly has a few flaws and the game could have been more polished at launch, however, if you look at the entire picture it paints it's a masterpiece. I just finished it after roughly 140 hours of playing and i'm in awe.

It isn't optimal at the moment - there are folders upon folders and it can be hard to figure out in the beginning) - but it's not that big of a deal really. I really like what they've done with the replacement for the paragon/renegade system. It gives you way more freedom to be whatever you want to be without the label of good or evil. The game is beautiful too, I love the new galaxy map that enhances the feeling of being an explorer and the environments themselves are a treat to behold. Think of it as a dash of Star Trek Voyager's frontier exploration, a splash of Battlestar Galactica's desperate magnitude and top it off with a huge dose of the Mass Effect universe... stir it, mix it and heat, and you've got yourself a great game! What do you as a player think is important for the survival in the Andromeda? There is the main story here but, just stop and think for a little bit. There are Arks missing? Don't you think it's important to find them? People on the Arks don't have enough resources to live so setting up outposts and terraforming planets is important. There are three to four main story lines in this game and none of the games out there every gave this much freedom to a player as to how to approach it all. This is by far the best game I've played this generation. The NPCs feel alive, they have their own lives and don't just exist when I want them to.

I can give it a 10 but that wouldn't be very objective, they pushed it out just a bit too fast, but don't disregard this game, it's the best game Bioware has made, you're meant to live in this world.

It is the closest a video game has come to being an interactive movie.

I like this one overall. It's not up to the same standard as the first two mass effect games, but I'd put it on par with ME3 in most respects. The big failures are the ones you've seen made infamous online - facial expressions are often strange and inhuman at best. I've likened it to watching animatronic characters speaking. Things move and you get what the expression is supposed to be, but it rarely looks natural or appealing. Similar animation problems exist with character movement, and there are occasional graphical glitches that are annoying. The other thing I've found most annoying so far is the repetitive nature of the fights. The enemies have so far been largely the same, and I find myself using the same tactics over and over again without feeling like there's much point to the fighting.

That said, I found the concept behind this game to be pretty compelling. It's executed with moderate success. The mystery of the scourge is fascinating enough to keep me going, and once the game opens up to let you explore the massive areas, it can feel really satisfying. As ugly as the characters can be, I've found many of the landscapes to be simply beautiful. I like the new ships. I like about as many companion/NPC characters as I liked in ME3 (about half of them).

I haven't even attempted the multiplayer at this point, so I'm not considering that for my score.

Bottom line is that this isn't the masterpiece that was ME2, and it lacks the sense of urgency (and the benefit of buildup) that supported ME3 so well. The game has some big flaws. That said, it's still worth playing if you enjoy science fiction and ideas of space exploration. I also think the majority of people giving this a "0" or "1" aren't giving the game a fair shake.

We've seen brexit, we've seen Trump, we've seen all kinds of mob-like witch hunts in social media. And what we see with Mass Effect Andromeda, unfortunately, follows a similar path. As opposed to the people behaving like adults who understand you that there's a lot of gray between the black and white, never mind actually thinking for themselves, we have a huge angry public roar demanding for heads on a plate. And for what? I don't think anyone even knows. It's just how the modern mind seems to work.

You got EA, a bad rep to begin with. You got a few early pre-release jokes about deliberately hand-picked wacky facial animations, and a running animation that required deliberately jerking the stick all wrong to even look like that (that trick works equally well in most other games, btw). With just that and a little bit of bad luck, this mass of an online lynch mob that just loves to hate something - anything - decided MEA was going to be its next victim. Apparently the video game world hasn't had its share of drama for a while, so someone had to play the role of the scapegoat. BioWare was the perfect victim. No real "critic" dares to go against the social media lynch mob (we've all seen what happens if you do) so the recipe was ready and the result is what you see: A bunch of reviews comparing MEA to the kinds of third rate failure games most of us have barely ever played.

It's all wrong. Transparently so. You see, here's the real deal. Here's what the game is REALLY like:

Mass Effect Andromeda is a good game, probably well in the top 10-20 list of games this year, but it's not great. It's not something you'll remember a decade from now (Yes, games can be something between perfect and sewage waste, it's amazing right?).

Visually, MEA is objectively amazingly beautiful and detailed. Its game play is genuinely extremely fun, MUCH more fun than what most games have, and works nearly perfectly for single player. It has a smooth good progression system, good music, great voice acting, and believe it or not most of the time those risky facial animations are actually good. And while it has some pretty darn annoying bugs, none of them have been game breaking or in any way actually serious. In my experience most games have more bugs than this when they come out. It's not an excuse, and they need to be fixed, because they REALLY are annoying, but there it is.

That said, it has issues. Unskippable space travel animations requiring 10-30 minutes to fly around planets clicking a button in every fourth of them that has a button worth clicking, gets old real fast. You're literally wasting loads of your precious time on nothing, and are painfully aware of it. That's unacceptable. The game is much too large and wide to comfortably support a strong storyline, which leads to unbalanced progression rate where you can effectively grind for 10+ hours in a row with not a single bit of new choice-based dialogue with your crew mates, then spend 3 hours in a row running around in cities and watching those aforementioned "flying from orbit to orbit" animations with no combat action whatsoever to look at people yammer and yammer, and run from one NPC to the next delivering and receiving quests... And when you're done? Rinse repeat. BW started this with Mass Effect 3, made it worse with Dragon Age Inquisition, and instead of learning anything, kept going further in the same - and in my opinion wrong - direction with MEA.

A company who in the past was known for the most powerful storytelling and narrative on the PLANET, has for the third time in a row (fourth if you count Dragon Age 2) decided to go the way of Bethesda, and basically do what Bilbo Baggins once said: Spreading too little butter on too much bread... when their business is the butter, not the bread.

The multiplayer is amazingly fun, and addictive. But it suffers from some real issues that need fixing. While I've never liked automatically enabled VoIP since all that does is force you to manually mute everything to avoid hearing 100db white noise and heavy breathing on the other end every 20 minutes, the real issue is in the laggy game play. 90% of the time it works great. Then comes the 10% that appears in almost every game: Enemies teleport, shoot at you through walls, ignore your abilities, are immune to your shots, or activate melee death animations from two stories below you and 20 meters away. It's frustrating, enraging even.

But at the end of the day, the point is this: While the truth is that the game has issues, that same truth is that the game is fun enough to be worth those issues. Aside from the design choice of putting too much focus in open world, the only real problem with MEA is it lacks polish. And patches can fix that.

MEA has my recommendation. Easily. 8/10.

With that said, let's move onto the actual game.

    Downsides first;

Minor glitches, technical issues, and whatever else that happened that shouldn't have in the game don't bog things down as much as people act like, or at least in my experience.

The story was a little downwards as well in this game, but from what I remember Mass Effect 2 struggled to really have a plot, and Mass Effect could be finished in maybe 3 hours and they were both fantastic games. I wouldn't rank this game much lower, plus this is the foundation, or groundwork for the next possible trilogy, I'm sure it wasn't meant to blow you away, it was meant to get a foothold in another galaxy, and I thought it was done very well.

Some of the conversations seemed much more forced than before, when there's not really character development conversation to be had, then.. there isn't. Don't force it, just to get more content in.

I'm not usually one to complain about it, but if we could get more time for romance's instead of just a scene here, there, and the lovely before the end finish, that'd be great.

The crafting was a little everywhere, I couldn't get into that part at all.

The lack of polish was there.. A little too obvious for me. I would've liked the story/dialogue to have more 2 choices where you basically say the same spiel.

That's literally all the bad I can muster from my thoughts of this game.

    The Upside:

    Just about everything.

Music was pretty great, as always.

Characters were great, every mission with them I loved it. The jokes were plenty also, and sometimes seem like stale or Dad-jokes but that added to the humor. If people want to look back on Mass Effect 1-2-3 as great for characters, Garrus had almost nothing to say the whole first game. Second game he has a gripe and finish it, he says nothing again. 3rd was my least played Mass Effect, so I don't even remember.

The combat was spectacular. I didn't understand what was going on at first, and seemed peeved that my control over squad mate abilities was taken off, but then noticed, they are centralized around you, the player. It's almost impossible not to get a thousand combos off in this game, and the combos themselves are astoundingly awesome, biotic combos, tech combos, the elemental combos, everything was phenomenal with combat. Easily the superior bright spot in the game.

You can tell there was a lot more emphasis on being a space-traveler and everything with the pathfinding expedition. I thought it was also pretty great, only slight recommendation would've been that instead of the Nomad mining, we could've mined like in Mass Effect 2 on the planets again.

The new species were on display in this game, and of course, I loved it. Even the enemies were interesting to me, although hard not to notice it was mostly species being " Reaperfied " again, but worked for me, loved it.

The world looked more beautiful than the characters, but characters didn't look crazy bad either, not even half-bad. Besides since when does everyone have to look crazy awesome all the time? I'm pretty sure I don't, and even in a fantasy space-drama game like Mass Effect, it shines through, like it should.

Loved the romances, even if they failed to be more than a few scenes in the game, they seemed more.. Intimate.

The voice-acting was so-so but still great to me, some comparison's to the other Mass Effect games and it still shines better. I heard on youtube reviews about some Krogan's not sounding like they should.. but hey.. It's their game and they create the image they want to invoke so.. Didn't sound too bad to me, or I wouldn't have played. Plus if every krogan sounds the same, how would you differentiate them? The one criticized is also female, how many female krogans have we seen?.. Oh, the one from Mass Effect 3.. Didn't sound that much different.

Side quests were pretty good, could've been done better, but still good. Especially compared to other Mass Effect games. Bring Down The Sky, Lair of The Shadow Broker are the only comparisons I could think that'd be better, really.

My experience with this game has been pretty much what I would expect from Bioware and a AAA title. I typically never enter a game expecting a GOTY experience, so perhaps I do set the bar low in most cases. I will add that at no point while playing this game did I feel that this game deserved a score lower than a 6.0. People are certainly entitled to their opinions and I respect the fact that this game is going to be one of those that isn't for everyone, but the 0s, 1s, 2s and 3s? Pure bandwagoning from the gaming hipsters, probably a lot of trolling as well. I bet most of those reviewers didn't even buy the game. Case in point: the animations. Much ado about nothing. Some critic before release decides to harp on a couple of funny looking facial expressions and then the entire internet can't stop talking about it. Where was this level of criticism for Fallout 4? How about DA: I? Plenty of games get by with sub-par to downright crappy animations. Have games like the Witcher 3 spoiled us on such things? Whatever the case, the facial animations aren't that bad and the new patch has shown improvements in the worst of them (i.e. Addison, the tired face lady). If they had to pick between facial animations and the rest of the graphics I'm glad the chose the latter. This game is gorgeous on high settings on pc.

Now for the bugs. This game has them, hell most games do these days. When was the last time you bought a console game and didn't have to download a > 1 GB day-0 patch? Bugs happen. Blame the publisher and their aggressive dates over the dev studio. At any rate I have never encountered anything game breaking and the latest patch seemed to squash some of the immersion-breaking ones during the cutscenes on the Tempest, which were the only truly annoying bugs for me.

So now for the actual gameplay. The combat system is probably the most improved part of the game. It just feels very fluid and when you play on a higher difficulty it can present a fun challenge. My biggest gripes about it are that they didn't allow for much companion customization this time around. You can mess with their limited skill tree but that's about it. However they make up for it through main character customization. With profiles you can spec into any/all of the talents you want. Get tired of playing a soldier? It's ok, you can switch to a biotic. No need to start the game over from scratch.

Overall the story and characters are good, sometimes great, but they never truly reach that level where I felt fully invested. I feel like the open world part of the game is the chief culprit here. While driving around and exploring planets in the Nomad is fun, it creates a break in the story that found me many times wondering what exactly it was that I originally came to this planet to do in the first place. In short, ME: A suffers from the same problems that plague most open world games which begs the question on a game series that found its success in the narrative: was making it open world really necessary? This is the same problem I had with DA: I. Just because you can make something open world doesn't mean you should.

All in all I found my experience in Andromeda to be fun and fairly rewarding. The story, while it never really reaches that epic scale from the original trilogy, it certainly delivers some good moments and successfully lays the ground work for a new series in the Andromeda Galaxy. Worth a buy IMO.

Lets get the elephant in the room out the way. YES FACES ARE BAD.

Now that's done, this game is absolutely brilliant! I have been playing ME:A for a fair few days and wow, some people can be really really butthurt about nothing. This is a Mass Effect game at its very finest. Characters are likable and yes I do care for these guys! Story is great and yeah its brill!

    I am a happy gamer!

However, this one even caused me to prefer playing over sleep, which for years has been very rare to me. The story is captivating, with a lot of things to explore, great plot twists, and a lot of funny reference to the original trilogy. If you don't look at the details or focus too much on some unexplained details, I see how you can dislike the game and start assuming plot holes. However, this is just an intro into a new universe, so obviously there won't be time to explain everything. After all, I got 60hours of gameplay out of the story, and I even skipped quite a few side quests. It also lacks some polishing, but I didn't encounter any game-breaking bugs. Overall though it's a very solid experience for Mass Effect and Sci-FI fans as a whole. Expand

Graphically wonderful, there are a few bugs yes but non game breaking. The bugs will be patched, and even if they aren't still a 9 out of 10. The story is captivating and engaging while not becoming boring or monotonous to me. The only reason it isn't a 10 out of 10 is for the overall quality is a little lower than to be expected on some of the minor animations. Overall well worth the money

If you like Mass Effect and Bioware in general you will like this one. Don't fall for the "animations are ugly" hurr durr, they are kinda outdated, but that doesnt turn this amazing game into a piece of s*** like people are saying. C'mon... It's Mass Effect with all the Mass Effecticities you will need! How that cannot be good?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I never write a review, but as I loved this game so much I will. The story was short but amazing - please don't just play the story and leave out all the side bits as a lot of the quests actually sit well with the story. I haven't finished the game as of yet, I am on the last mission which is on hold - until I have done the whole game including all tasks.

I am well over 70 hours in and at completion of 58%. A lot of the reviews on here moan about animation and looks ect. However, the animation is amazing considering how much content is available there is a few lip sync issues ect but the developers have released a patch and are listening to reviewers. I remember the days of eye of the beholder and wizardry series the graphics were - well non existent but the games made up for it in story telling ect.

I have played all mass effect games and dragon age games and love them equally. Reviews these days are mostly based on cosmetic value and graphics and glitches. However all games to start with have teething problems - there is no perfect world - you build and adapt and improve ect. I take my hat off to bio ware - they have made one amazing game and I hope they do not stop making these type of games due to the hate of individuals. Maybe I am just an old fart hehe. Don't be a sheep and follow the quantity of bad reviewers - follow the few and quality reviewers :) try it your self - get a hard copy - play it if you do not like return to shop.

    Positive
Breath-taking worlds to explore - gorgeous scenery.
Engaging romance options and story with fun side quests and intriguing knowledge behind the initiative.
Brilliant combat and is hilarious when you use your mini poc combat revenant :)

    Negative
Some animation problems - however bio ware is fixing this and patch released (not so negative :P)
Travelling to each little planet is long winded but is gorgeous on hdr pc - feels like being in space so can be overlooked.

if I have typos I do apologise I am an old git lol - and please do not troll me for being honest as a relic gamer ;)

The Story is good and sets up for the next games. If they do it right, there is potential to be even better than the OT.
Im glad they made a cut under the old stuff and dont care about the old cry babys who want shepard back.

I think people set their expectations extremely high due to the trilogy we all know and love, and when Andromeda failed to be as epic as three games rolled into one during the first couple of hours of gameplay, they became very disappointed.

Andromeda is by no means a bad game. It reminds me the most of the first Mass Effect with a clear focus on exploration. The story isn't as urgent as with the trilogy, because there's no acute threat, "only" a need to establish a new home in a new galaxy, which fits well with the exploration theme and actually for once it makes sense to help people along the way - you do it for the survival.

The games certainly has some bugs and could use a bit more polish in some areas. I personally don't mind the animations, I think they're bad only on Addison and sometimes Sarah. What bothers me the most is the clunky UI and unskippable cutscenes when travelling between planets.

What on the other hand is great is the combat, which is definitely most fun from all the ME games. It's very dynamic, fluid yet not confusing and thanks to not being restricted to one class, you can switch between different playstyles or classes to your heart's content. The only questionable thing here is the limitation to only 3 active skills, which is somewhat negated by being able to switch your profiles and skill loadouts.

The sidequests are mostly interesting and the more boring "fetchquesty" stuff is clearly labelled as additional tasks and can be avoided completely.

    In conclusion:

    The good:

Lots of stuff to do and explore
    Combat
    Companions
    Great visuals
    Interesting sidequests
    Puzzles as fun

    The "meh":

Main story isn't as gripping as the original trilogy
    Some animations are iffy
    Occasional bugs

    The ugly:
    Clunky UI
Unskippable cutscenes that take up a lot of time

Overall a great game to get immersed in and explore new worlds.

ME2 is the best game I've ever played, so I can relate to people who feel that ME A is a completely different and a letdown. However, if you approach this game with an open mind, you could very well end up liking it a lot. Some feel that it's too grindy with its research and crafting, and to some extent I agree, but it becomes much less of a chore if you stop focusing on the finishing line and instead try and enjoy every moment and embrace the content. This installment was not as well written as ME:2 or ME:3 but certainly has its moments. I am enjoying the characters (bar a few). Maybe its because I love the mass effect universe so much but I have to say I'm loving the story aswell. I didn't notice any issues with animation until after seeing the flak online and even still it doesn't bother me. Multiplayer is okay but gets rather bland as there are few maps. (Who plays ME for multiplayer though anyway?) I feel like there should be more companions but that's just a personal thing. While my love for ME makes me want to give it a 10 I'm going to give it a 9 simply because I do see some animation errors now and sometimes the game is a little laggy on my Xbox.

*P.S I forgot to mention the fact that the development team fixed the issue of long travel times and was working on fixing facial animations so props to them for that.

    Single player:
The gameplay is fluid and fun, even if sometimes laggy (but hey, looks like my friends didn't get half the bug that I got, so maybe I pushed my PS too far). I HATE open worlds, so I didn't like that aspect, but exploring was funnier than in Dragon Age: Inquisition. I didn't like the random side quests (quests where you have to find a notepad, a corpse, etc., spawned at a random place on the map- Remnant's sites, Roakar sites, etc-.), they're even more boring if you play them after-ending; I probably should've played 'em during the main and the other side quests. The majority of the cutscenes is definitely unpolished and rough, but the important ones are **sometimes** amazing. Some planets are gorgeous, while other are kinda boring- but nothing like those horrible maps in Dragon Age II: you can see that Bioware didn't get enough time to work on this (just read the whole story on Kotaku). Sometimes while talking with NPC they wait too much before going to the next sentence, but I've seen some videos online and that doesn't happen that often on pc version. Wish it had voice acting in my language, but EA probably decided to cut some features- unfortunately sometimes the translation was wrong and plain bad. Unfortunately, NPC don’t usually speak about interesting or personal stuff like they used to do in the other Mass Effect games.
I didn't expected anything from this game because people talked trash about it, but I've kinda appreciated it anyway. So many reviewers all over the net say that this game is bad because of "ugly characters", but every video/article trash-talk different characters (Cora, Peebee, Suvi, mainly women), so maybe they aren't ugly but particular, and that's something nice. ...I would've appreciated a super hot asari like Samara anyway. Don’t trust any review that talks about “SJW **** because that’s nonsense. I didn’t get an “anti-white” feel from this: I’m white and I hate racism (also towards non-POC)- I don’t really understand where some saw it.
The character creator is terrible. It is getting better with updates, but it's nothing like Dragon Age Inquisition's one, and this is pretty sad.
Wish the story was more…new. The concept looks old. Remnants are like Protheans, but looks like they could become something different in the next game…if a next game will be made. There are choices and they are kinda important, especially in the long term (as in a sequel), don’t know what others are talking about. Of course the changes are not immediate and not everything is important, but there are definitely some choices. I have played the game only once (and I do not plan to replay it, I don’t like the idea of more Ryder or more Shepard, I wanna have this as my story), but I think that you can be "renegade"- you won’t see it in this game, but in the next one, as it happened in Mass Effect 1.
It's not a Shepard saga's game, but it's interesting anyway, and I hope that they'll release the DLCs one day.

    Multiplayer:
Boring and based on items that you should buy, and people never save you when you need help. I don't like playing online anyway, so I don't really care.

Mass Effect andromeda’s only major flaw was that it was written with an expectation that a sequel was guaranteed.

The gameplay was smoother than ever.

The story was setting up for something amazing. And the characters personal growth was so varied (not everyone was growing into a better soldier they each had a unique story). It was exciting to see where everyone went.

Let's start with the elephant in the room here; facial and character animations/glitches. Not the quality I would expect for a Bioware release. Great, let’s move on.

UI: Definitely nothing as bad as say Skyrim when it was first released. It's not as intuitive as The Witcher 3 but you get used to it after playing a few hours. The skills section is well laid out and easy to navigate.

Definitely nothing as bad as say Skyrim when it was first released. It's not as intuitive as The Witcher 3 but you get used to it after playing a few hours. The skills section is well laid out and easy to navigate. The buy/sell screen is a bit busy but reminds me a lot of the Fallout series. There’s a lack of sorting options and the way the game organizes inventory is a bit ‘meh’ but that’s very minor. The Galaxy Map has very little to scan but lots to read, quest interactions and pretty colours. It does feel like there's something missing though. The UI while in battle is perfect. There’s not too much going on and the pop-up menu for consumables/weapons and favorite set ups is easily accessible with great usability. There’s really nothing frustrating with the menus in this game and no glitches that I have come across.

    Combat:
I have to say this is probably one of my favourite parts of this game. No longer are you locked into specific rolls. I love the fact that I can switch from Adept to Engineer to Vanguard all in one battle. The powers are really easy to use and using Throw to launch enemies out of sight never gets old. The additions of auto cover (albeit this threw me off at first) and jump jets allows for fast paced and dynamic combat. Your sidekick’s auto-combo alongside your attacks much like ME:2 and 3 but with more explosions and satisfaction. As far as AI is concerned, it’s not horrible and not amazing. It works.

    Story/Questing:
I think the “rush” factor bleeds into this a little bit as well. One thing I found frustrating was the cutting out of conversations because I was moving too fast or scanning something and new dialogue would override the one that was occurring. I feel I missed out on some witty banter and mission intel because of this. Also, the abruptness of cut scenes was kind of jarring. Other than this, I found the writing and storyline to be pretty much on par with Bioware’s previous titles. I enjoyed the main quest line from meeting the Angara to figuring out what the hell is actually going on in Andromeda. I was satisfied by the ending and the fact that I could go back to exploring after the fact. The side quests for the most part are not the filler fetch quests you get in a large amount of RPG’s we see today. It’s obvious that Bioware took the time and effort to make sure they didn’t make the same mistake they made in Inquisition. That being said I’m pretty sure you can get through the game comfortably without mining at all. The mining is redundant, don’t do it unless you’re really short on minerals.

    Characters/Other:
I think this is the first Mass Effect game that for me, did not have that one character you could care less about. Cora and Liam almost fell into this but give them a chance, they provide good conversation and Liam’s loyalty quest was my fave out of everyone’s but I found them all entertaining. I enjoyed learning about everyone’s past and their views.

The multiplayer is a fun way to take a break and complete Apex missions in a more interactive fashion than just assigning teams to them. The AVP system is a great way to gain perks and earn credits. Not much to say about these, they’re well thought out and provide an extra touch to the game without feeling like it’s patched on.

One quick thing about the Nomad (your planet exploring vehicle); upgrade the six wheel drive speed ASAP. Other than that HUGE improvement on the Mako in ME:1.

I’m sure there are things I missed but honestly, I was let down more by Skyrim than I was this game. Sure there’s some beauty work that needs to be done but after 5 hours that dissipates as you get submersed into the universe. You just have to let yourself get submersed instead of letting other people’s opinions matter. I think this is a situation of ‘love it for what it is; don’t hate for what it isn’t.’ Mass Effect: Andromeda is a great addition to the family and I will replay it. It’s unfortunate that the marketing got messed up on this one and that this game will never get the attention it deserves. It’s a huge game and a lot of work went into it and that does show when you delve deep into the game. I read some reviews that judge the game on factors that get resolved later on in the game. For example, I believe it was someone from PC Gamer that said the open world was hindered by zones you couldn’t go to. If they had played the game enough they would have realized that this was only on one planet and you resolve that issue by completing a quest not too far into the game. Either way, I had a lot of fun playing this game and am looking forward to continued exploration and DLC.

None of these issues are unexpected in BioWare games.

That said, I've found the game to be on the whole, immersive. The Nomad is everything we ever wanted the Mako to be. Exploring the vast and often stunning maps is much more rewarding than it ever was in Mass Effect 1. The combat system has been revitalized with the advent of jump jets and an automatic cover system. Multiplayer is once again challenging and surprisingly replayable.

I do wish there was an automatic setting for which shoulder the camera is on, though. And a more streamlined inventory/crafting system.

Some of the writing early on is a bit shaky, and the face animations during dialogue can be off, but the rest looks amazing. Overall, the gameplay is a ton of fun and the story and setting have me engaged enough that I'm still craving the game. The anti ME:A storm is largely bandwagoning, don't let it stop you from enjoying a great game.

    Lore is extensive and helpful
Characters are well made and relatable in many cases.
Different worlds to explore make you feel like you are in an alien planet.
    Story is inspiring.
Kind of miss the paragon/renegade system but the intent based dialogue is not bad either.
    Looks gorgeous.
    In depth crafting.
    Good multiplayer.
Amazing Ending got me sneaking out a tear.

There are several things that are not good, the devs shouldn't have changed the engine they were used to using, and animation in some things need a serious look over.

Its a game that had me entranced and dedicated, i can recommend it in good faith, and as long as you ignore the fact that Commander Shepard is only talked about, and its not a story with the characters you already know, you'll enjoy it a lot

You have driving, a shooter game, puzzles ( loved them, it's something different ) and different worlds to explore. The open world game is very nice, graphics are very good, here and there a few bugs, but, i haven't seen a game that doesn't have such things, and let's be real, the game is massive, there are bound to be errors along the way.

Now the bad... a few bugs here and there, still frustrating, though, missing the crouch function while in battle ( the character crouches when near an object ), and crafting system is not what i've hoped for, also, once established the bases don't offer any upgrades, just side missions, or just completing the main goal....

It is not the worst game and does a lot of things right. The story could be a bit more dramatic, but the characters are all very well worked out. The gameplay is fast, active and the AI is pretty smart on higher difficulty. Personally, i had hardly a bug. The animations disturb a bit, but that is not THIS bad.

When it comes down to it, it's about plot and gameplay, and for those it really pulls through. Amazingly varied plots/maps, cracking variation in play and enemies, wonderful atmos, and only one restart-worthy bug so far (this is an RPG, btw. Fallout 4 had waaaay more issues than this at launch).

Also they haven't been afraid of gutting out of date ideas from a successful formula (a dangerous business at the best of times).

I'm regularly terrified, thrilled or tentative (with strategies, dialogue and plot decisions) and have been playing non stop through the weekend.

Lives up to the previous games, for sure.

The characters are entertaining and deeper than people want to give credit for. Vetra and Dracks almost father daughter relationship is a highlight. Loyalty missions are range from fun humorous to painting one character as a badass. profiles allowing you to switch between multiple power loadouts in three button presses makes up for the lack of wheels from previous games and gives you more powers at your fingertips than ever before.

After merely 100 hours of gameplay, In which I covered every possible mission, sidequest and task I could find (I still have a few tasks) I can say this game deserves more love. For a game of this magnitude it is understandable to have some bugs and glitches, but bioware listens to their fans, so I won't count that as failure, they already fixed some major bugs and glitches, and even improved animations.

    The pros:
-Story is interesting, it keeps you on your toes up until the end and you just can't have enough of it.
-Companions are likable, you get to know them and even love them eventually, I can't say as much as ME trilogy (Its a trilogy, you have that built up each game up until the third, unlike here which is the first.)
-Combat system, One of the best features of the game, it's ridiculously fun, Its dynamic, fluent and fast. I really enjoyed this part of the game, much more than the trilogy (which was slower and much more cover and shoot than anything else).
-Graphics: even tho my PC didn't max it out, the game was beautiful, the environments are unique to each planet and system, the sounds, the textures. I have to say they really stepped up the game here.
-Gameplay time: You have tons of hours to put in this game, not counting the multiplayer, if you really want to go through every detail of the game it will take you quite a while to finish (for me about a 100 hours)
-Crafting system: unlike the last 2 games, this one has a pretty decent crafting system, where you get to build your own equip, according to your style. you even get to pick the color of your set, which is a nice touch.

    Cons:
-Dialogs and Character interaction: Throughout most of the game the dialog and the characters are a bit dull. It was hard to connect to some of the characters at first, and I found myself disappointed. Although Mid-late game I managed to get the connection I wanted and I loved it. Yet it is a downside of the game.
-Face animations: The face animations are not the best they could offer, there is a lot of room to improve, hell the 2nd and 3rd mass effect had better more realistic animations than this. At times I felt it was really ruining the experience of awe that you have at first of a game, but yet if you stick around you get used to it.
-Side quests: I've enjoyed some mostly because the combat is fun, but there aren't enough stories in these quests, a lot of them are dull and repetitive, which could have been more creative and memorable.
-Repetitive stuff: A lot of things get repetitive at times, the Asari all look alike (except Peebee), at times you pass through places and the NPC will repeat the same sentence over and over even though you progressed in the storyline. Sometimes it put me off, and it wasn't that much of an experience as I would want it to be.

    In conclusion,
I liked the game, I wouldn't say it is the best Mass Effect ever released, but it is an enjoyable one for Sci-Fi and ME fans.

    Cheers.

While it does have issues (animations can be pretty rough, a few bugs forced me to reload earlier saves etc), it manages to recapture the spirit of Mass Effect; great characters, interesting plot and brilliant world building. Add to that vastly improved combat and this game is a worthy addition to the Mass Effect universe.

In short, this game isn't without flaws, but if you can get past the slow start and poor facial animations, you will find a game that is more than worthy of the Mass Effect name.

In short, this game isn't without flaws, but if you can get past the slow start and poor facial animations, you will find a game that is more than worthy of the Mass Effect name.

The graphics as a whole are absolutely great. Every planet in the game has had at least a couple screenshot worthy views. The animations for movement and combat are also very good with the occasional glitch here or there. The facial animations are absolutely awful. They can be covered in most conversations by forcing Ryder and squadmates to wear helmets, but it is impossible to completely avoid. This doesn't effect my enjoyment of the game, but it is understandable that others find it to be a deal breaker.

The combat is the best of all the Mass Effect games by far. The game offers many different playstyles and doesn't lock you into any of them, allowing you to switch classes (called "profiles") on the fly. The companions pull their weight in combat on normal and lower difficulties, while on higher difficulties they are less helpful. The one complaint with the combat is that they removed the ability to pause and issue squad orders that was available in previous Mass Effect games. I rarely used that feature in previous games, so its removal wasn't an issue for me, though it might be for others.

The companion characters are far more interesting than those of Mass Effect 1 (before they were developed further throughout the series). All of the companion characters have interesting developments the occur over the course of the game, especially after completing their loyalty missions. I believe that these characters are a fantastic base, and if sequels can expand upon them, they could end up with the same level of appreciation as the characters in the original trilogy.

The story gets off to a slow start, very similar in structure to Mass Effect 1. After maybe 5 hours of play, the story begins to pick up and by the end of the game, it is compelling and interesting with many questions to be answer and mysteries to solve throughout. The game has forced me to make several difficult choices that have left me sitting on the dialog screen for minutes at a time debating which decision is correct. The absence of the paragon/renegade system makes these choices all the more difficult because they are more morally gray.

While the game is far from perfect, it delivers on all of the things I care about in a Mass Effect game. It has great characters and a compelling story. The fantastic combat and beautiful environments make the game even better. While I can understand and respect the criticism directed towards this game, any Mass Effect fan who allows the negativity to prevent them from buying it is doing themselves a huge disservice, because this game lives up to the name, and I can't wait to see the story continued in another awesome trilogy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me caveat this by saying that I have a pretty average rig, but experienced no technical problems with the game about 30 hours in. I take it from some of the reviews that this hasn't always been the case. The short version is, I am loving it, despite its flaws.

Going through, I will highlight a few things and make particular note of the flaws. Please be aware that I am doing that.

Story - I liked that they flipped the typical save-the-galaxy script in Andromeda. Entering a new galaxy, trying to get civilization kicked off again, and dealing with new found problems are all a welcome and interesting background. There was no homeworld-like sense of loneliness, or awkward tension prior to meeting other races. It feels like you arrive and jump right into the fray.

Pacing - Part of the problem with jumping right into the fray was meeting a bunch of characters too fast - I felt much more attached to the characters I added later that were more directly involved with the story than any of the ones I started with. The rest of the story can take awhile if you're going through everything and thats fine by me, although as usual travel time is annoying. Weapons and armor actually feel different and are paced well, but they are so numerous and complicated that they have their own issues.

Questionable Design Choices - a lot of the menu/quick access issues that Dragon Age: Inquisition had were only somewhat fixed here. The game is massive both in terms of the world it gives you and the types of things you have to do in it but you can only access things from certain places. For instance, there is no reason I shouldn't be able to send a strike team on a mission from anywhere on a planet. Why do I have to leave on the Ship or be at the Nexus to do this? Ditto research and development, colony communication, SAMs location and conversations limits, etc.

Size and Scope - the game can feel very overwhelming sometimes. This is one of the reason a lot of the weapon augments almost feel like too much. Or perhaps its the billion quests that you receive from different locations throughout the game. I like the scope, but it can be hard to get a handle on if you're trying to do everything.

The rest - Graphics are nothing earth shattering, which means I can comfortably run it on my aging computer. The combat system is freaking excellent, and the multiplayer strike teams that help your single player campaign seem like a cool idea (still haven't done them yet). There are great characters in the game, but it takes awhile to find them.

Ultimately: I've spent almost 30 straight hours playing this over the weekend, and I really enjoyed myself. The game pulls you in, like the ones before it. The design decisions that haunted Dragon Age: Inquisition, for me, are still present - slightly bettered but not done away with. The size and scope can feel overwhelming and the script is off and on. It helps that I had no technical issues with the game as of yet, but there is the foundation for something great here, and the game is a heck of a good time.

I hope the next installment of the Andromeda series is going to fix a lot of the Physics bugs in this game, and maybe use som of the physics from ME 2 and 3. The dialogue is sometimes a little Bleh, but when it comes to the story and the choices it is very much a Mass Effect game, with a great story as we have come to expect from BioWare, i would not hesitate to pre-order another BioWare game, and if they could get free from the cold clamps of EA, i know they would become one of the best game-studios in all time.
Comparing to all the bugs all the Internet mentions, yes there are bugs, there are story holes and there are misstakes in the explanation of why the technology can do stuff they didn't could before. Let's face it, 600 years of Cryostasis doesn't really advance the technology 600 years. The ability to travel between systems by nothing but the ships drive and not use the Mass Relays can be explained by that the part of Andromeda explored is actually only one cluster (in which the original games is the entire galaxy) A cluster with a black hole in the center, explaining the circularly formation of the cluster. I would bet in the next installment of ME Andromeda we would go visit another cluster and to travel to those, we would need som kind of Mass Relay. And at some point af Relay would be build in both Andromeda and Milky Way to get a fast transport between the two galaxies. Enough of my theories, the game is a great ME game, biotics, gunslinging, killing aliens and befriending af new alien race, and still the opportunity to be romanced by a blue-skinned sexy Asari ;-) I would recommend this game for anyone liking a good story, I would not recommend it for people wanting graphics and physics perfection, but if you like a little bit of both, the game is worth it. Maybe wait for it to go on sale before throwing cash at it. It is still a Mass Effect game.

So I finished one of the 3 runs of Mass Effect: Andromeda while the other 2 are at various stages of the game and can now say with full confidence I think the amount of **** this game is getting is ridiculously overblown.

I’d put it behind ME 2 (best writing in the series) and ME 3 (2nd best writing in the series and best gameplay, and no 5 minutes of bad ending doesn’t magically undo 30+ hours of a great game) but it’s still miles ahead of ME 1. The last time I played ME 1 was a chore just to get a perfect game save for import into ME 2 so I could then have perfect imports for ME 3. I will never, ever, play that game again. The story is fine but the gameplay is **** horrendous and last I checked these were still video GAMES. As in they’re meant to be played, as in gameplay is paramount and will forever be placed above story, even if there are plenty of video game stories I like.

The weapons are boring as **** most side quests are just as bad as any other game (which for reasons I don’t understand people are suddenly acting as if this is a post 00’s issue), the gunplay is god **** awful, and squad control isn’t great. Even the skill trees are bad. There’s such a ludicrous amount of filler (why is a spec ops soldier required to waste points in gun skills just to be able to hit a target from farther than 2 feet away? That should be there by default, he’s a spec ops soldier FFS which is why them getting rid of all that crap and getting rid of dice rolls for hits and misses was perhaps the single best decision they made in the entire franchise) that forced you to level more than actually necessary due to all the mandatory skills you had to take since every little action in the game had a dedicated skill tree. It’s easily the worst game in the series taken as a whole.

Andromeda has it’s issues. I really, REALLY miss the paragon/renegade system, particularly as it was implemented in ME 2 and 3 with the interrupts and the ability to regularly come at the paragon solution through renegade means. Being a giant dick while still having a moral compass when it came to the big stuff has never been more fun than those 2 games. And they didn’t really replace it with anything. You’ve just simply lost the ability to be an **** for the most part. Ryder seems to be much more Bioware’s character than Shepard was. You WERE Shepard, it seems like you just kind of direct Ryder.

I also miss the more varied alien character types, like the hanhar and elcor since the weren’t the traditional bi-pedal quasi-alien that every game, movie, and book seems to focus on but being as said games, movies, and books have always done the same I don’t know why Andromeda is being singled out as if this was some new sin on the genre.

I also miss direct squad control although I get why they got rid of it. Ryder can perform combos on his own that were absolutely impossible to do as Shepard without the direct squad control he was afforded. Without the global CD you don’t need direct squad control to easily launch combos and would essentially have no downtime whatsoever for combo usage so again I get why they got rid of it, still irritating.

The gunplay is the best it’s ever been. Far more movement (verticality matters for once), augments can make really big changes to weapons, the weapons themselves are very varied, and the skill trees are some of the best in the series. I don’t really switch profiles, even on maxed out characters but I guess it’s cool that the feature is there.

And lastly I thought the story was fine. Other than feeling like a fair few of the joke lines missed the mark I didn’t find the writing to be any worse than anything else in the video game industry. I didn’t see many characters wildly contradicting their established character, or doing things that didn’t make any sense. Everyone seemed to be doing what they were doing for perfectly valid reasons and that’s all you can really ask. This whole crusade for originality is the most precious and overblown thing I’ve seen in entertainment. We’ve been on this rock passing down oral and written stories for literally thousands of years. Do any of you REALLY think anything is WHOLLY original in this day and age? Seriously? Let me fill you in, there’s not and there hasn't been in an exceedingly long amount of time. The best story tellers can do at this point is put their personal touch on the same stories we’ve been telling for millennia.

    8/10 would play again.

I found the initial problem for a lot of users is that the first dozen hours are slow as you set yourself up and learn the optimal controls/ tactics/ lore

But when you've invested time you get left with a beautifully slick product that is as much a work of art as it is a game. The combat - which previously seemed slow and boring - is AMAZING. Eventually, when you''re a high enough level you can create multiple combat profiles you can swap between depending on which enemies you face - affecting your abilities, powers, ideal weapon choice etc. The movement in this game - initially sluggish - when you master your sprint, jump jet and dash enables you to whip in and out of enemies and to go to scans/loot. Even the NOMAD presenting problems as you learns its capacity and buy its upgrades.

The beauty of this game is it is a RPG and you're in a new galaxy with no idea what's going on - sounds pretty similar to your current position as a gamer. This actually helped me engage in the game as i wanted to delve into the THOUGHT-PROVOKING storyline/ themes (spoiler - they are amazing and the ideas the story presents might very well soon be real-world issues: automated workforce/ AI?!. I found once i slowed down my gameplay - took time to explore the the various dialogue choices all around our starting position and even reading the codices! When you've got your research, development, leveling, scanning, combat, inventory, looting, dialogue and movement sorted the game is beautiful: it just takes time to get this(and your ship) set up.

I think the reason this game is getting poor reviews is due to a 'fast food' culture we see ourselves in: Max enjoyment in minimal time. But if you take time to appreciate the game and story and learn the mechanics you're left with the most incredible game I've ever played.

This game has so much complexity and depth - delivered so well that it's a massive disappointment seeing bad reviews for a AAA game. Opinion: i'm worried this might lead developers away from creating games with such complexity and depth until you are left with dumbed down console ports.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to say that I understand the negative reviews as the game has more than several bugs especially the desert map which is really bugged and force you to reload your saves for about 60% of the missions because an NPC will be underground or something else. But apart from that, this game is fabulous, I love it! The story could be better but the exploration and the fights are pretty good. If you try to finish a planet as much as possible and don't swap too often between planets (which is a real pain) then this is an excellent game is maybe not the best PC Game of 2017 but would definitely be in the top 10. Yes, it feels like it's a rushed game, like released to early or like you're playing an early beta but ME fans like me are thankful to Bioware for continuing the saga.

All and all the game together with its flaws is not bad, it's GREAT actually. It's not like the flaws are preventing you from enjoying this great game. It's just that people are comparing it to The Wicher 3 which is perfect and ahead of any other game in any category. Yet, I lost interest in mid game in The Witcher 3. I didn't care enough for the story or the quests to continue it. Maybe because as I said earlier in the beginning I'm tired of medieval, sword fighting look-alike games anymore.

But, there's another reason I rated it higher then maybe it deserves. It's the first ME game that's open almost as other open-world games and it's a Sci-Fi and has 100+ hours of gameplay.

Inventory and equipment organization could be better. Maps can be better and a minimap could be very useful! Some minor changes would be welcomed like the 'M' keystroke to be able to close the map and not pressing ESC twice. And of course the character animations are outdated. But as I said, I love the game, I pre-purchased it and didn't regret it.

If Bioware kept putting the same game out over and over again they would get criticized for that. Remember how everyone hated the streamlined RPG elements in mass efffect 2? Now they hate the complexity of the crafting. For the first time in Mass Effect I get the feeling of exploration and in depth crafting. The visuals are beautiful. The combat is enjoyable and the variety of armor, mods, and weapons is awesome. I have not finished the game but so far the story is good. I think with time people will give this game a chance and recognize how good it is. I only hope the criticism doesn't make Bioware simplify and dumb down the next one. There are some visual bugs but so far they have been no worse than the other games in the series. Expand

Let's get the cons out of the way first.

There's animation jank and some buggy UI stuff. The crafting system is denser than it should be. Some of the faces are squarely in uncanny valley territory. There's a lot of sidequest padding. The game is slow to hook you. But once you get used to that, there's a great story here, with genuinely laugh-out-loud funny writing in some places,

The problems with this game can be fixed with a patch or two, and once you get used to the uncanny valley faces and animation issues (took me about 3-4 hours), there's a solid core with a good storyline and great characters.

It's not BioWare's greatest game ever, but even average BioWare games are great, great games.

The vehicle exploration is a joy and the planets are amazing looking. I love the combat system, especially the biotics combat and the sniper rifles. There are some things I'd like to see improved or added to the game that being said. The 'from space' planetary exploration is a bit mundane and lacking a sense of discovery and exploration. The map is a bit wonky sometimes not letting me set my personal waypoints exactly where I click, resulting in me clicking elsewhere on the map until the waypoint shows up where I want it. Lastly, a lack of indicator that you've completed all the conversation tree options on a given individual is annoying, and results in many "Hi"/"Bye" conversations that I don't feel are really necessary if a better indicator system was in place.

Overall, I'm really enjoying the game and looking forward to where they take this game and its planned expansions.

A bunch of morons decided that Bioware made the female characters in Andromeda ugly on purpose to appeal to those pesky SJWs. Bioware is also apparently racist because while there ARE Caucasian skin tones in the character creator, they're not quite white enough which is oppressive to the white male or something. Yes, this whole sorry affair is as cringy and embarrassing as it looks. My conclusion is that these boys were way too young to play any previous Mass Effect games because if they were old enough back then, they could remember that women in Mass Effect (and Dragon Age, for that matter) have always looked quite bad. Hell, femShep in the first and second game looked awful. Her redesigned version in ME3 looked really hot - but only in the cinematic trailer and on the cover art. The actual in-game model looked nothing like what they promised. Bottom line: Bioware is just being the same old Bioware they have always been, but little boys can't deal with it.

With that out of the way, how is the actual game? Surprisingly good, actually. I've sunk about 30 hours into it so far and I'm nowhere near done, but I already love it. The premise is simple: a number of space ships (or "Arks") leave our solar system during the events of the original Mass Effect trilogy to look for a new home in the Andromeda galaxy. Their goal is to search for viable planets and colonize them. The travelers spend 600 years in cryosleep, and when they wake up things definitely aren't as simple as they expected. The Ark the new protagonist Ryder is traveling on arrives more than a year after the others. The Nexus (which is this game's version of the Citadel) is barely alive, several other Arks got lost in space and crash landed who knows where, and the planets people hoped to colonize are deadly. There are also new threats: hostile aliens known as "kett" and "the Scourge", an artificially created space phenomenon that destroys everything in its path. Ryder's goal is to deliver what the Andromeda Initiative promised: terraform planets, build colonies, bring people back from cryo, and create a new home for the future generations.

Now I must mention the elephant in the room: yes, the character models and animations in this game are sub-par, the facial animations in particular. It's nowhere near as bad as people make it sound, but it's definitely disappointing. Bioware games have always had glitchy animations, awkward facial expressions and less than attractive females, but it's the year 2017 and one would hope there was some progress on that front. Alas, we still have Mass Effect 1 levels on quality 10 years after the first game was released. Female Ryder's default in-game model was disappointing in particular, but 30 hours into the game it actually grew on me and I think she looks quite cute.

Mass Effect has always been more about the characters' personalities rather than their looks, though, and Andromeda still delivers. Fryda Wolff as Sara Ryder is definitely a worthy successor to Jennifer Hale's Shepard. She's younger and less experienced than Shepard, and she's endearingly awkward (especially when she flirts), but she's also snarky, funny and pretty cool when she wants to be. Wolff's delivery is spot on and femRyder has quickly become one of my most favorite ME characters thanks to her amazing voice work. The whole main voice cast is very strong. Christine Lakin (yes, the little girl from Step by Step) is shockingly good as Peebee. Katy Townsend is here too for those of us who can't get enough of the Cheeky Scot, and Natalie Dormer as Lexi T'Perro is amazing as expected, though I can't help it but feel her talent is a bit wasted. They brought in Natalie effing Dormer and all they have her do is voicing a minor character you can't even romance. She should have been a squad mate.

There are 6 squad mates in total, all of them likeable and appealing in their own way. Not all of them are as fleshed out as they'd deserve, but Andromeda is just the first game in a new series and I'm sure we will learn more about them in time. You can also romance them as usual, but while the sex scenes are slightly more graphic this time around, they're also very, very awkward.

The game is well optimized on PC, too. I have an old GTX 970 G1 which is definitely not cutting edge anymore, and the game looks amazing with a rock solid framerate at all times. The sound design and music are great as well.

Final verdict: Andromeda is a damn good game. There are things I don't like (limited character creator, confusing mission tracking, crafting system, the lengthy animations you have to watch when traveling from planet to planet, weird character models and facial expressions), but if you get over these flaws the overall experience is enjoyable. Oh, and the new MAKO is really, really fun to drive this time around!
