This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok this is kind of painful to write, I got the deluxe version because well, mass effect is... sorry WAS my favorite game series...
Firstly. Deluxe version, waste of money... heck I'm not sure if the standard is worth it to be honest, WAY too many glitches, the map and navigation is horrible, I rarely know where I'm going because they basically show a 3d map in 2d, and you cant rotate it, so you're constantly wondering if your supposed to go up or down, and pointer is rarely useful. the characters are NOWHERE near as interesting as ME1 let alone ME2, heck, Id argue and say its worse than 3's new characters. WHICH IS SAYING SOMETHING! animation quality is abysmal in comparrison to 3, no-one feels real... wait thats not exactly true, the majority of male characters do feel real-ish, oh and there were missions where I'd be fighting and suddenly find myself falling under the ground into an abyss, or Id get stuck between crates or even a person and be forced to re-start from last load point. the camera changes so much during combat, I can't even keep track of who I'm fighting, and not to mention to EXTRA long reload time on EVERY GUN! I MEAN SERIOUSLY! I end up going melee just to make it easier to battle, and SO many characters have One hit KOs, so you can't let them get close, imagine fighting banshees, but more annoying, and you can't really shoot them, or even get away. I've had moments when Ryder wouldn't move, take becomes unselectable for some reason, or something, and the puzzles, as much as I enjoy puzzles, they get very boring and old, VERY fast...

I still liked the game, and story, and stuff, BUT I AM HONESTLY SO MAD ABOUT ALL THE BUGS AND GLITCHES, I SWEAR IF THIS HAS A ME3 END, I WILL BREAK MY LAPTOP

P.S, I'm tagging spoiler box, just in case, I don't think I spoiled anything but, can never be too safe

The graphics are amazing. I think many people will find many aspects of the game rather confusing like they did not take the time to fully develop some things to be more user friendly. Also the save system is horrible. All in all though, still a very nice game and if you take the time to figure the game out fully, you can still have a lot of fun with it.

Like many said before... A Dragon Age Inquisition in space...
Endless, not interesting side quest. Main story is just boring and characters dull.
One thing that really catches the eye and makes you play is the environments (DA Inquisition again). Planets are a joy to explore. This shouldn't be a Mass Effect game it should be called "The Andromeda" a game based on ME universe. And

Overall it's not a bad game but it's just average.
You start, you are excited during tutorial planet and things are happening and then you go on your own journey and you wish you could skip 2/3 of the grind and just move on...

Don't buy it.... Wait for holiday sale or something... It's not worth the price...

I tried to look objectively at this game as i finished the main trilogy twice but Andromeda just doesn't hold up to its predecessors. Bioware put an emphases on open world, combat and driving, but not so much effort in storytelling, dialogue and characters, which was the heart of Mass Effect.

Though the main quest is mysterious and good at times it lacks tension and it feels like a disney story with few to none important choices. I never got that mass Effect vibe, i never felt like one of my companions was in danger, it all felt too predictable and lighthearted.
Its not a bad game per see its just a BAD MASS EFFECT GAME. If it didn't had mass effect in its title it would have been mediocre at best.

Review of the game after completion (no spoilers). I have to say that I very much enjoyed this game. I'll start with the meat of the review, story. The game has bad pacing for sure. I'll start with the meat of the review, story. The game has bad pacing for sure. It unloads chore side quests on you in 2 major chunks and expects you to pace yourself between them and the main story. This doesn't work well for people who are used to ME2 and 3 who remember needing to finish everything to get the best possible outcome. It also makes squad interactions lacking, as these side stories only update along with main story missions. That being said, everything fits in with the universe and the quests do leave you feeling like you helped out the people involved. The main story I would say feels as epic as a mass effect game should, I loved each main story mission and these were always where I felt the most immersed, but the pacing does affect it negatively. Each squad member does have their own mini quest line in this game, plus some smaller side stuff for them as well. Each crew member is enjoyable in their own way and the game really does make you all feel tight-nit by the end. This aspect, unfortunately is also affect by the games pacing. Squad missions only update along side main story progression. The combat and exploration in this game is really superb though. They put a shine on the combat system of the 3rd game and made it more fast paced and intense. The huge open worlds to explore are beautiful and enjoyable to navigate in the nomad (my personal favorite was driving over massive sand dunes in a seemingly endless desert). It's confusing as to why the game was polished to look so great in this aspect but left conversation animations so disconcerting and strange. The biggest downside to this game for me was definitely the pacing. It left me doing large chunks of the same task consecutively as I went through my "to-do" list of chores and ended up making the game feel lacking when grinding through all the side quests. But I still very much enjoyed this game. Thing cons I have listed did not ruin the game at all, and for me this game is hopefully the start of many more in a series. I finished this game feeling supremely satisfied and ready for more. I've tried to be objective about the game so people can see where it really falls short and also where it shines through. As much as I love this game and would love to give it an 8 or a 9, I know that objectively I can't give it more than a 7. It is definitely a good game.

    In Summary:
    Pros:
    -Beautiful worlds and set design
    -Fun fast combat
    -Epic story
-Great new crew members to love

    Cons
-Animations are disconcerting and take away from immersion
-still plenty of bugs to work out
    -Quest pacing is horrible

How i wanted to like this game, but i cant, the characters are so generic and wooden that you just dont care after 2 hours.

Maybe its because this is the first one in a trilogy but god, its boring and this coming from a player of all 3 Mass Effect Games, which i loved.

Maybe The Witcher 3 has spoilt me, i dunno but the whole story and characters are very dull, a huge disappointment.

TLDR: Not as good as any of games in the the original trilogy, but not terrible. Wait for a price drop.

ME:A had a viable (pun) storyline for creating a game that was completely separate from the events of the previous games. Sadly, even after most of the bugs were patched, the game still suffers from several annoying problems.

The following list includes minor & mild annoyances that ended up lowering the score I give the game:
REPITITION - Holy cow, I would wager a full 50% or more of the hundreds of missions in this game go something like this: Find one object on the map. "Oh, it looks like I'll need you to find (pickup/scan/destroy) 3,4,5 more of those objects, THEN we'll tell you where you need to actually go to do what needs doing."
SJW - I was hoping this was overblown. Thankfully, it is to a degree, but it was still bad enough to be worth calling out as groan worthy.
ANIMATIONS - Still buggy. Main character is part owl and can turn his head 180 degrees proficiently in conversations. Also can look up 45 degrees simultaneously to stare into the player's eyes as you watch him.
THREE ABILITIES - You get access to more abilities than ever before. Of course, you can only use three of them at any one time.
CONSOLES FIRST, PC LAST - Everything in the interface is mapped to a button. Your mail shows console controls for switching between new mail and archived mail. Okay, no problem really. Just use the mouse to click between them...but wait, clicking with the mouse only works to select something in about 80% of the game's various interfaces. It will always highlight and look like it will work, but sometimes it wont *actually* work. Gotta use that button...
WAIT, WHAT? - Let me get this straight. One crewmember is gay, but only as far as the main character is concerned. If you're a dude, get your romance on. If you're a woman, he won't touch you. But he'll be fine starting a family with a NPC woman later on. Actually, never mind, I just remembered how ugly they changed the female twin to be. Dude has reasonable standards and this is actually realistic after all. Not improving my rating though, because I'm 100% certain Bioware didn't intend the rational explanation.
FINAL BATTLE (in space) - They tried to pull in that element from ME3's epic "look at all our forces" scene. It came out of nowhere and bordered on deus ex machina.
FINAL BATTLE (on ground) - There's supposed to be a fight with the main antagonist himself Bioware. The last part of that final battle never happened.
TWIN - Honestly, should have just become a member of your squad after the first planet. Bioware seemed to forget that she has the exact same implant as everyone else sent to Andromeda except the protagonist. Something to conveniently forget, as that would have made tracking people down less time consuming.
INCOMPLETE STORY - Not in the 'this is set up to have sequels too' sense. I'm not talking about where the story goes from here. The story between start and finish needed more meat on the bone.
PC REQUIRES ORIGIN - This always will be an automatic deduction in score, and recommendation of "don't pay full price", EA.

    The Bad:
    - Horrible animation, facial expressions, gestures etc. Characters stand and walk in a ridiculous fashion.
    - Ugly, expressionless, lifeless characters. An intelligent and powerful female human or alien cannot be good looking?!
    - I really hate the traveling and exploration method. It is downright tedious, boring and a huge waste of time. Takes almost half a minute and multiple clicks to reach a planet when it used to place instantly. No skip button.
    - Romance was supposed to be revamped but its still the same **** Talk till a certain point, then before the final mission the romance scene takes place. The End.
    - This game seems to be tailored for the politically correct. I thought a game is supposed to allow me to delve into the fantasy realm and escape the real world politically correct bull****.

    The Good:
    - Combat is AWESOME and I really like what they have done with the skill selection and combat profiles.
    - The Research and Development system offers a wide variety of craftables weapons, armour and augmentations and is a huge improvement over DAI.
    - Beautifully crafted alien environments that sometimes take your breath away. Ample Fast Travel points located strategically.
    - I feel the Nomad handling and control is a big improvement over the atrocious Mako from the previous trilogy.
    - The storyline and setting is not the best but so-so only. Wish it was as epic as the previous trilogy.

LOVE the whole planet developing, gear customizing strategic aspect.

Side plots are not bad, still Witcher3 is much better

Had hoped for a more cinematic experience involving flying as well, like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

Cautiously looking forward to a ME5, there is potential, especially if they think consider aliens more alien (like Fred Hoyles book The Black Cloud or the Arrival movie)

Yes you all heard about it, the facial and some of the other animations are attrocious. however that has no major impact on my review of this game. I'm not the kind of gamer that truly roleplays to a point where quirky animations would be immersionbreaking. If anything i found some situations hilarious. however I do understand that it might be immersionbreaking for some people.

Another criticism the game has gotten from mainly prepub teen boys is that all the female characters are ugly. That is completely irrelevant to me as I don't tend to jerk of to videogame characters. I usually want to romance the most outrageous alien anyway just for the hell of it.

No my main critisism lies with the bugs and glitches that are actually a nuisance to me as a gamer. Like the falling through the floor, quests/tasks that you can't complete because the game either doesn't allow you to do what is required to complete them or because the game doesn't register that you have done it. The teleporting squadmates, the locked falling animations because you want to drop down a ledge, the Nomad that suddenly disappeares mid drive etc.
The UI and info are unecessarily convoluted, lacking and at times seems like they've been designed as an afterthought.
The story is so predictable and cliche it's not even funny. No plot twists no interesting characters a far cry from the orginal mass effect games (except for the **** ME3 ending).
The main villian is one of the most boring ones in later years.
The dialogue has been degraded to FO4 level. And the description of the dialogue you pick and what your character is actually saying is so far off at times you constantly get a "WTF, that wasn't what i meant to say at all" moment.
They've done awat with renegade/paragon system wich I really don't like. It's hard to choose a consistent path for your character, especially in conjuction with the dodgy dialogue descriptions that doesn't match what he/she says.
The flying around in space, it looks cool initially then it becomes such a huge choir. It takes 10-15 seconds to fly to another system, then another 10 seconds to fly to the planet, then it will have a zoomed in view for 5 seconds before you can scan the planet. When it takes 10 minutes to just look at planets in one system it gets **** tiresome after a while. And of course it's unskippable.
All this with the feeling of "halfassededness" overall takes away immensly for me.

Multiplayer is just hordemode with microtransactions. It's servicable, not really bad but nothing special.

Now there are some things I like. I do like the combat direction they have taken, some might prefer the cover based fighting of the old games but I much prefer the active combat in this game. The graphics are gorgeous on my rig at 1080p/ultra.
It also performs very well holding about 90 fps avarage (OC intel 4770K, 16GB ram, Titan black), initially it had a huge dump in frames for a split second when transfering from an ingame cutscene to gameplay but after the first patch along with nvidias gameready drivers the performance was stellar for me. I'm confident once I get my new monitor I can crank that res up and still keep 60fps on my 4 yo rig.
the environments are varied and beutifully built.
I also like the companionapp that allows you to send teams on missions wich might get you credits and research data and possibly some items while you arn't playing.
the crafting is pretty good save for the UI that handles it.

But overall for me, a mediocre game. Not bad but nothing to be hyped about. Worth a playthrough if you have nothing else to do but don't expect a masterpiece or the same level of quality as the previous titles offered.

When EA bought them out years ago pre Mass Effect 2 people were worried they would ruin the series but it seems peoples fears have become true eventually with both of their biggest series falling flat with bland and clique storylines and characters that do not connect with the audience.

I hoped Dragon Age Inquisition was just a bump in the road and that it was all in my imagination that you ripped off the Mass Effect storyline, but sadly it seems you have fallen from grace just for cheap P2P content and **** online modes nobody asked or wanted at the cost of the single player mode that should have been your only priority.

Buck your ideas up Bioware, tell EA to stay out of it and stop trying to make this into the next FIFA or Madden NFL sports game in space. Go back to your roots of KOTOR and what made you into the gaming powerhouse you are today, I used to say 'Bioware never makes a bad game' sadly that has changed.

Mass Effect and Dragon Age will not survive the direction you are going, you **** up, so fire the people in charge and go back to the drawing board and listen to your fanbase before its too late.

I'd have to write a novel to explain everything I have in mind, but I'll try to make this short (it won't be). I've finished it, played it for 97 hours total, done most of the content... so here is what I think:

    * NOTE that I am criticizing the CAMPAIGN here, because the Multiplayer is actually good *

MAIN NEGATIVE POINTS (I'll just focus on those)

    1) Facial Animations. They are indeed mostly [very] bad, especially for human characters. The eyes, in particular, are horrible and is the one facial 'feature' that contributes the most to the unsettling "expressions". There ARE * some * ... very rare scenes in which the animations are actually decent, but those cases are very rare.

    2) Humans and Asari, for some reason, are ALL UGLY AF. The facial * structure * (not the animations in this case) is mostly the same for them both (humans and Asari). There are some very specific characters that * do * have 'different', unique-enough facial structures that sort of distinguish themselves from "the rest". However, other than those specific individual NPCs here and there, ALL other humans (especially females, but males too) you'll encounter have either the exact same or nearly the same facial shapes and nose shapes and size, and mouth height, forehead size, eyes height, nose bridge, eyes spacing... etc. It's as if they took the game's own character creator, made maybe two models for Human males, two models for Human females, and two models for the Asari, and then they used those two templates for ALL OF THEM in the game. The only occasional variants are skin tone / color, clothing, hairstyle, hair color, eyes color and that's probably it. The facial structure variety is simply insulting.

    3) The Character Creator is BAD. The default Skyrim creator is better, and it's incomparably better with mods (which are free). The default Fallout 4 creator is also better. Heck, I've seen F2P MMORPGs with MUCH better creators than that. It's... it's horrible. It's WAY too limited. Not to mention that once more BioWare shows us that they do NOT know and probably do not WANT to give us more than a dozen HORRIBLE hair styles to choose from, especially for woman Ryder.

    4) The Soundtrack is VERY forgettable, unimaginative, unoriginal and quite simply boring. It doesn't help carry the story telling, it doesn't get your adrenaline pumping in "intense" situations, it doesn't "add" to any would-be 'sad' moments (there's too few anyway, wouldn't have mattered much I guess). It just doesn't DO anything. The main theme is "calm", but forgettable. The irony is that the track that plays during the Credits is actually the best you'll hear in the whole game. Additionally, the music specifically for the Multiplayer is also horrible, just turn it off, it's bad.

    5) CANNOT GEAR-UP TEAMMATES. I don't get why but they thought it was a good idea for ALL the items you find in the game to be used ONLY by and for you, Ryder. What is the point of even having the teammates with you? There's not even COSMETICS-oriented variations of their default costumes and suits. Can't change their colors, their color pattern(s), can't change ANYTHING. They'll wear those damn outfits for the whole game. Can't give them different weapons, or different armors to try out different builds. Truly, the only Mass Effect game that ever bothered to do that was ME1, and I actually liked it. But here's the thing: even if you don't want to bother with that in new Mass Effect games because it's too long to model different armor meshes for too many teammates and then balance those things with skills and stats then AT LEAST allow us to have SOME variations of their default outfits. At least give us the option to change the colors, no?! NOTHING?! Huh... okay.

    6) Galaxy Map Animations. Why? Ok, the first few times it's sort of "pretty" to look at, it's all dynamic and we're "moving" through the star system in real time. Alright, we get it, you guys are super cool for doing something like that. It will be remembered in the gaming industry for decades to come. Now here's the thing... IT. GETS. BORING. FAST. I played the game for 97 hours, probably 5 of those were spent waiting for those damn zooming-in and out animations to complete...

    7) ...and 5 more spent trying to navigate the HORRIBLE USER INTERFACE. That part of the game is actually probably worse than the animations. I don't think I need to go into details here because you can just SEE it. Also, the Multiplayer's UI is actually a downgrade compared to ME3's, which was admittedly very simple and basic, but was understandable, responsive and clean.

    8) The main story line is very generic for sci-fi, does nothing more or unique that wasn't told in other universes or even within the Mass Effect trilogy. It's not necessarily "bad"... it's just not "good". It's "meh", and forgettable, and lacked 'spectacle' and 'surprise'.

    ... etc.

There's more, but 5k characters limit is there to stop me.

Combat was good, but only 3 powers can be allocated to quick use although you can switch profiles. I'd rather not be able to switch profiles, but instead by able to allocate more powers for quick use. Very buggy to the point where it will kill you or get you stuck. The inventory system is pretty convoluted, but I got the hang of it after awhile. The worst part of this game for me is the story and characters. It's pretty straight forward. No real twists or huge developments. The best part of the story comes from a side quest that doesn't relate to the main quests and I think they missed an opportunity not pursuing it more. They may address them in future games, but they failed to hook me into buying them with this one. LONG animations going between systems and planets too.

They say they're fixing a lot of the animation issues and more in an upcoming patch, but the story is what really knocked it down for me and that's something they can't patch.

This game is basically killed by lack of talent, mostly writers and game designers (not all of them) and the Bioware management, who i believe was the force that release it in its sorry state.

It is obvious the game is not finished, many bugs asside, the game has issues with its mechanics, most obvious being the animation system (i believe that animations problems are not generally caused by bad animations, but the system that manages and triggers them), but you can see that collision detection, enemies hitboxes and notably NPC pathfinding has issues as well. It would be silly to think Bioware had no QA, and even more stupid that these things were not pointed out by the QA team. They were either ignored or there was no time to fix that. This is the main reason that for me its a 6/10 game, if these things would be fixed in the initial release, it would be a 7/10 game.

Now, giving this a single digit number is a difficult task, its not a bad game, its not a good game, more likely, it can be really good, and it can be really bad at times. The first 10 hours are, well dissapointing at least. For an epic scifi opera, it's not very epic, it does not really explains its mechanics and it feels a bit stupid (okay, there is a huge structure under this planet with a button, so let's press the button and see what it does). The next 20-30 hours, the game pick up pace and the mechanics are starting to show promise, thats until you realize that's it. This is all that is in the game, the rest of the game is just repeat over and over what you have done with slight to none alteration. You would think, okay so its time for the final push, the endgame and the final confrontation. Ehm, nope, the game continues for tens of hours and hits the floor really bad, there is no real content to support the length of the game, its get repetetive very fast, and you have to force yourself to finish it, because it looses the main aspect why someone actually buys a game, to have fun. There is a problem with the balance of difficulty, weapons and armor as you progress as well, while going from lvl1 to lvl10 feels like upgrade from a mouse to a tiger, progress from lvl 10 to lvl 40 feels like upgrade from tiger to a tiger with slightly more fur. You can take down pretty much everything in this game with a lvl 15 with not much more difficulty then with a lvl 40.

Now what breaks the game for me really bad, is the character of Ryder sibblings, i would really love to play as their dad, because that was the only really interesting character. First off, they are stupid and their dialogues are writen as of someone who really lacks inteligence, is immature and does not really care about the events that unfold. At times it even feels like a 1980 teen opera adding more characters to the mix. It seems main character is 12-15 years old on a roadtrip. You would not want give him/her a task to look out for a pet, not to mention the role of pathfinder and the responsibility for the whole mission. There are ex spectres in the crew for god sake... (the whole pathfinder role does not really make sense when you planning a trip to another galaxy].

Let me end this by the worst Ryder quote ever:
Jaal: We should be careful, many have been lost in these caves.
Sara: Me ? Lost ? Neeeveeeer.

I’ll try to go over the stuff from what people seem to like most, so first the pros:

Combat: It truly is the best thing about this game, it is really fun to customize the set of skills you want to use to crush your enemies, however I have some issues with this too. There is a skill loadout limit. You can only use 3 until you change it to a different set. The plan was that BioWare wanted to make to combat more fluid, by not having players constantly pause the game to use a skill. This is understandable, but I really hated that I cant use all my powers at once. There were hotkeys assinged to the different powers in the older games that you could use without pausing the game. I don’t know why they wouldn’t just keep that. Another thing that was bothering me is that you can’t use your squadmates power directly. You can order them to attack an enemy and they would use their powers eventually, just not instantly like in previous games, therefore you could’t do combos easily, which kinda killed a lot of fun.

Powers: All the powers are unlocked for you and you can learn anything you want, which is awesome I love this, because it makes you use your creativity to play around, and create different builds.

Exploration: I guess the planetary exploration is great if you are into that, but it can be very repetitive. I know driving around the Mako in Mass Effect 1 on the same planets just with different textures was silly but it had a charm to it, and it was new that time. This is fine but the secondary quest often revolve around the same type of missions.

Visuals: The environment is stunningly beautiful sometimes. I especially liked Voeld the icy planet. I was blown away by some of these places.

And that's about it, now for the worst parts.

Facial animations: I don’t think I have to talk about this. Its really horrible. When its not bad its fine, but you can easily find ugly animations if you look for it in every conversation. The female lead character is especially horrible. They started patching it up, so It looks a little better, but still. Mass Effect 1 had better animations. Also the gameplay is extremely glitchy. There are several game breaking bugs, that I have run into and had to reload.

Characters: I hated every single one them. Some are really annoying. Drack the krogan was fun though.
I didn’t like Ryder either. I’m not saying that Shepard was the best main character ever, but he/she was military, a commander. Someone who had a lot of responsibility and you felt that all throughout the game. And you felt every decision you had to make. Here you are just someones whose father was a big man, who invented this „pathfinder” role and now you have to take that role after him. There are decisions that kinda effect the game, but not really. Not like before.

Story: Main story is completely mediocre. Can’t really say much about it becouse most of the time it was **** boring and very predictable.

Dialouge: This is main source of my frustration. First off, they removed the paragon/renegade options. It had some problems before and I was ok with this when I heard it, but not only they removed the paragon/renegade system, they removed every badass or heroic dialouge options, or every moral choices in the game. Like I said there are few choices that you have to make but neither one is better or worse than the others, and you don’t pick it becouse you are ruthless or a hero. You pick it becouse you have to. You can’t be a badass Ryder. Remember when you punched reporters in the face, or Shepard shot a racist turian hostage? The game doesn’t have anything like that anymore. There is no big dilema during secondary quests. The dialouge just drives you. Most of the time you can only choose 2 options on the dialouge wheel, but sometimes there is 4. Yet all of them say the same thing, just with a little bit of a different tone, or it says a completely different thing than what you want to say. You have the illusion of choices, but in reality, none of it **** matters.

In conclusion: Right now this really doesn’t worth full price. I understand if you want to play it because it’s Mass Effect, and most of the times if feels like a Mass Effect game, a really average one at that. Still I would wait for more patches, and wait for a sale, you are not loosing anything with it trust me.

It’s average. Very average, and for a huge Mass Effect fan like me, incredibly disappointing and sad. I don’t want to make it emotional, but this really broke my heart. It has a potential to have a great sequel, becouse it builds up to it, but this is clearly the worst one in the series. Yet…

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I made an account just to voice my thoughts, secretly also hoping BioWare would take note. I gave it quite some time to think about this...

TL;DR: RPG's matter because of choices (else, I'd get a movie). Choices only matter if there's consequence and compromise. Consequences matter only if the subject has been properly introduced into the heart of the player. Despite many positive points, I think BioWare failed to realise how these strengths were implemented in its previous Mass Effect titles.

    * It wouldn't do a lot of very talented people justice if I didn't start with some very positive points:
    - Disagree with me but, I like the graphics. The world and alien design is top notch and I've taken more screenshots in this game than pretty much any other game.
    - Combat is fluent, dynamic and very versatile due to things like dodging, jetpack, best version of biotic charge, and I for one prefer this cover system over any ME1/2/3 title, since to me it was really intuitive and not as 'magnetic' as in ME3 (which caused me to get killed many times due to unintentional cover). It just works.
    - Adding depth to Alec postmortem is to me a very good storywriting choice and was executed well. Even added a dimension to the opening scenes on replay.
    - Some characters were written very well. Not to exclude anything, but top of my mind: Suvi, Kallo, Jaal, Vetra, Reyes. Top notch.

I wish to present my critique by highlighting some differences with older ME titles:

    - I LOVE Mass Effect 1/2/3 and would rate them highly regardless of some omissions (ending, bla bla). They challenged my thoughts and evoked emotions, many times over. Sadly, I kept waiting for those big decisions and that loss of control. The only choice I had to make that directly resolved within this game was choosing between a salarian Pathfinder and a few faceless Krogans. The choice is obvious and logical, rather than ethical and emotional. This doesn't affect players as much.
Edit: you can also have or lose the Krogan on New Tuchanka but that isn't really followed up since you can complete the game easily regardless. A lot of open ends like this which suggest a followup in some ME:A2 but I think a game should be sustainable on its own. I could just play ME:2 and call it a day. Same with ME:3.

    - ME2: Tali's romance felt a bit awkward and yet very intimiate and genuine, like you would expect from a real experience. Then there's the chance she gets killed in the end mission. This character buildup and then introduced uncertainty (unless you're the player that just starts over to 'get the story right') is a very good representation of a real life experience and adds immense value to what you do. If a character a) cannot die or b) dies but was only introduced 3 seconds ago (angara person where you found the AI in the ice cave), you do not feel *anything*. Yes, you are still logically choosing based on ethics, but you do not feel it.
ME2 Loyalty Missions were strong because yes a) you really got to know the character but more importantly b) you could actually lose them and you even had to choose between loyalty of characters. Compromise and uncertainty. An outcome only has meaning if it is not certain or if it means giving something else up. Examples:
    - loyal characters that you are emotionally invested in, but can die
    - loyalty of person A resulting in distance with person B. This was only presented in choosing between two Asari that only existed within the loyalty mission.
    - losing loyalty despite doing what you think is best in the greater scheme (again, Tali, at her trial, which then even affects the potential Quarian/Geth alliance)
    - Importantly: These choices offer immense replay value!!
    - Most characters were professional and capable. Even a Wreav, who is relatively unintelligent, is a convincing (plotting, unstable) character within its own canvas. The Tempest crew feels a bit high-school-ish and it is not canonical with what they manage to achieve at all. In ME:3, all characters convinced you of their political and tactical knowledge which makes you feel like you should really pay attention to what happens, e.g. like in real life. For lack of a better term, many ME:A characters are edging on a little goofy. I like humor but a mature character should exert some matureness. Ryder for example only beats the game because of his (my) combat prowess. Because he can hardly keep the group together (people walking away from meetings should be an OPTION, because they sure as hell would not walk away from MY meeting, only if I would choose dialog that reflects very bad leadership - how else can I relate to my character?) and has dialogue with the enemy that is DragonBall Z level: "come at me, a**hole!" - "yeah? that's what YOU think" (I'm not kidding, I made a screenshot that has both options in a single wheel...)
    - Characters aren't completely polarized. You could even feel loyalty towards an Illusive Man in ME:2.

Buried beneath a ton of annoyances and bad design choices is a very fun game. It's a shame you have to dig through the dirt to find it.

Mass Effect Andromeda does a lot right, like the improved combat, level design in the main story missions, and the setting. The biggest issue, however, was that BioWare decided not to improve upon the linear level design of the trilogy and opted to make most of the game an uninspired semi-open world. In this regard it feels like MEA is two games: The main plot follows the design of the trilogy with well designed linear levels; The secondary content is part of the semi-open world with environments unsuited for Mass Effect's third person combat.

The various planets are a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand you have Havarl which has a very natural mission progression with sidemissions you can pick up on your way. On the other hand you have Kadara, a big map riddled with fetch quests and a storyline that requires constant backtracking. The planet Elaaden has some great looking locations, but the interesting parts of the map are tied to its storyline. The sidemissions are spread around the planet in outposts consisting of a couple of stacked boxes and are, once again, very uninspired and not worth the effort.

The sidemissions also require travelling between planets, with Peebee's loyalty mission requiring the completion of menial tasks in most of the game's main locations, which means you have to sit through unskippable landing and takeoff cinematics meant to mask load times (sorry, SSD owners). Unlike Dragon Age Inquisition you can't teleport to any fast travel point from anywhere. In MEA you have to first enter your ship, look at a minute long cutscene, fly to your new location in the galaxy map, then look at another unskippable minute long cutscene. What's especially frustrating is that after all the travelling you may get an email from a character telling you to go to a planet you just came from, forcing you to sit through the same unskippable cinematic once again.

As far as story and characters go, MEA is very mediocre. There are a handful of interesting characters, but they're not nearly as engaging as the ones from previous BioWare games. The story is decent, but very derivative of previous Mass Effect games.

At its best, Mass Effect Andromeda really shines. Some of the loyalty missions are very well designed missions, and the final story missions is heaps of fun. It's just a shame that there's so little of it compared to the hours upon hours of padding. A damn shame, because there's definitely a great game in here somewhere.

Cons: character animations are a bit of a letdown, but stopped watching their faces pretty quickly; story could be considered simplistic; UI is too convoluted with its directory structure that could use some filtering/searching options; several task-level bugs, one loyalty mission bug I've encountered. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Minor spoilers!
Pro's: Some novelty of the Andromeda species, a new Reaper-like mystery (the Scourge, the Kett "exaltation"), better graphics, some atmosphere.
Con's: there are many of them. I even tried to put them in some categories:
    a) FP game-play con's: the combat system is less tactical, which transformed ME-A in a FPS-like game, losing the good old ME trilogy playing. Take an example: your squad mates cannot be ordered too much (you have only one command: gather here, or attack!).
    b) Walking/ running/ jumping. Sometimes stupid obstacles are placed where they shouldn't have been. There is a planet in the game, for exampl, where you need to jump over the given rocks every time you enter/exit the ship. During the game, you need quite often to use the omni-tool scanner, which it may be cool from time to time. Paradoxically, it obstructs your field of view so much while in scanning mode, and you don't know where are you walking to while scanning, so that you might fall into some hazardous situation. So, switching the scanner off- then scanner on for so many times, that you'll get annoyed and sick of it. No to mention that in "scanner on" mode you cannot jump/climb. And, of course, you'll 99% of times bump into a rock, or a fence-like object. As I said, 99% of the times. Scanner off. Climb/ jump. Scanner on. Continue walking while using the scanner. Bump. Off. Climb/Jump. On. Walk. Miss/ pass the objective. Return. Curse. Walk. On. Do something (Interact with the object/ take/ activate). Scanner off. Reach the newly created objective. Scanner on. And so on.
    c) Vehicle game-play con's. Well, it beats the Mako. It is more "drivable". On the other hand, you get tired of it pretty soon. All you have to do is to drive it over some rocks (yeah...), dunes, rocks again, caves. It doesn't have any guns.
    d) Ship ("The Tempest") star navigation con's. Unnecessary animations while scanning the planets or systems. A lot of unnecessary animation each and every time you land and take-off a mission planet. If you are patient enough to read my further comments, you'll get what I mean. Long story short, there are lots of missions that will require you to go several times from a planet to another. Watching the same in-game animation for a zillion times makes you rather unhappy... And no, I am not talking/ writing about loading/ saving screens, those would've been understandable... And not about the short animations like those in ME1, for example. But some minute-long animations each and everytime you move your ship. Evan reaching some planet is a 3 stages animation. You have around 4-5 planets in every system, plus some points of interests. You do the math of how many minutes/ seconds you lose.
    e) Dialogue system con's. Sometimes, talking with the characters is not funny or interesting. You need to go through several conversational options, without making you getting motivated in the given NPC's or other in game character's story. Some are veeeeeery boring. And you cannot say which one is important for the main quest, or just a secondary one, or even a dead end. You need to got through all of them
    f) Romance con's. Well, "the characters" are not as attractive as any of the original trilogy romances. But this is rather subjective. And the choices you would have are somewhat fewer, less fulfilling?
    g) Overall, the missions are like this: fetch something. Go to the planet A. Patiently watch the animation of landing. There, go the a nav-point on the map. Fight some bad guys. Scan objects, interact with some of them. Fight some more bad guys. Go to nav point 2. Fight/ Scan/Fetch/Dialogue. Go to the ship. Watch the animation of the taking-off. Go to the planet B (some animations of the travel). Watch the animation of landing. Go to the nav point one. Fight/ Scan/Fetch/Dialogue. Go to the Nav point 2. Climb, jump, drive the vehicle. Fight/ Scan/Fetch/Dialogue. Go back to the Nav point 1. Fight/ Scan/Fetch/Dialogue. Go to the ship. Take- Off. Animations, of course. Inside the ship: fetch/dialogue or use the messy R&D console. Go to the planet C. Animations. Watch the landing animation. Go to the Nav point 1. Dialogue, buy. Go to the nav point 2 (with some map transitions, depending on the planet). Climb. Jump. Fight/ Scan/Fetch/Dialogue. Go to the ship. Watch taking-off animation.. Go to the planet D.... You got the point.
    h) Character development, relationships, dialogues. con's. The content is not as profound, meaningful as I expected it to be. Playing ME-A, I didn't really care about my friendships or romance relationship. They were just.... there. I am a "completionist", this being the only reason I let them happen, given the associated quests (Loyalty missions), not that I really was emotionally oriented to any of the squad mates.
    i) The story is weak. For a comparison, imagine that the original ME trilogy would have been a story about the ME 1 geth conflict, the goal of the game being to kill their boss. 5/10

Was this game perfect? Absolutely not, far from it. The graphics were kinda dated, the story was a little lack luster, and the animations were absolutely dreadful and an absolute disgrace for any developer who dares call themselves AAA.
But there were a ton of new mechanics, new species of aliens, and fun times to be had in this game. The story was still somewhat captivating and I genuinely had fun with it.
However, Bioware has fallen under the choking grip of the overly SJW and greedy EA and this showed for this game.
The graphics were dated and looked like they were a few years old at launch because EA had to cut corners for maximum profit. The animations were some of the worst done this decade and whoever the lead animator was needs to be fired and never let back into the gaming industry because they clearly either dont have a degree in animation, the ambition to make a good game, or eyes to see how dreadful their work was. Also if you are looking to enjoy the romances in this game as much as in the past 3, you will be greatly disappointed. If you are looking to date the guy companions, you wont be too sad for they seemed somewhat fleshed out and enjoyable. But anyone looking to romance a female companion, good luck buddy. None of them are aesthetically pleasing, and only one has an enjoyable personality.

Overall, If i had known what i know now, I would still buy this game. However, it has next to no replay value.

-After ME3 these flight animations feel like forever and the hubs are not designed for ease of access to the ship. Overall a lot more time spent waiting than in ME3.
-Side quests are not very meaningful and feel forced just to add more "depth" to the world. There is just so much more stuff to do and while that is not necessarily a bad thing if you are into that style of gameplay it does not add much else for the others who were expecting meaningful interactions like the ones found in the trilogy.

So... if you were expecting another ME game you will be disappointed but if you dont mind Oblivion style faces/animations/dialogue and havent played the main trilogy then by all means give this a go. After all that it is one of the free games on Origin Access which is only $5 and includes the original trilogy.

A good (not great) game weighed down by technical issues and some poor game design decisions. After 90 hours I am very mixed on this game, not all of my time with MEA was fun, it often felt like a grind but there are some great moments.

    The good:
    - the best looking Mass Effect by far
    - the main story was surprisingly good
    - the ending was really well done - gameplay wise and story wise. Feels like they learned from ME3
    - at times the dialogue was great
    - enjoyed the Angara as a new species
    - Ryder's combat is pretty fun - enjoyed many of the moves and getting guns to my liking (for example super high damage sniper, high ammo assault rifle, flamethrower, concusive shot, etc)
    - Really like some of the new squad mates - Drack, Jaal, Cora, Kallo, Suvi

    The okay:
    - Music - a bit more orchestral and for some reason I just didn't feel it the way I did in the original trilogy. Listening to the soundtrack online I feel that I should have enjoyed it more but it just didn't come through in the game.
    - Animations - I feel like it's a bit overblown but there were def some animation issues one of the odder ones was Ryder over-rotating his head during conversations.
    - The Nomad - fun to drive but without any weapons that's all there is. It doesn't feel great to constantly drive to the fight and exit the vehicle. Also fast travel cuts out a lot of the driving.
    - Too much copy paste with non-humans. All non-human races looked virtually identical - just color swaps. A bit of this makes sense but there was often no variation besides color
    - Dialogue was at times cringe-worthy, oddly spaced (lots of nothing new - sometimes when it seems a particular character should have something to say.)
    - Some meh squadmates:
Liam -awkward mix of goofy and serious
Gil - weird sense of humor and dialogue
Lexi - maybe it was just my play-through but there's little interaction/ dialogue with her (I would talk
to the crew often between missions/side-missions and very rarely did she say anything new.)
Peebee - at times fun and endearing but often annoying.

    The bad:
    - LOTS of technical issues - broken enemy spawns (frozen/mid-air), weird visual bugs, warping into pillars, game crashed once. Luckily I was able to reload previous auto-saves the few times it was game breaking but there was definitely lots of issues that got more noticeable as the game went on.
    - No ability control of squadmates... missed this so much. I loved coordinating this is ME1-3
    - Vetra... didn't enjoying fighting or dialogue with her. Felt especially bad as Garrus was so much fun in the original trilogy.
    - Felt similar to the Force Awakens where they tried to carbon copy the original. aka Nexus = Citadel, kett = reapers, the night clubs, etc. At times it felt familiar in a bad way
    - the GRIND. A lot of content in the game felt like padding, mining was terrible / annoying, lots of fetch missions, lots of backtracking, way too much time spent on the outpost planets. The game dragged horribly at certain points.

It's sad to feel like if they had removed content this game would be better. For Mass Effect fans I think it's worth playing but focus on the main story as much as you can and try to avoid the endless grind.

As pros, this is totally new galaxy to explore, new races, new planets etc. The game have good graphics and a lot new ideas, but the game haven't good story, and majority of quests is simple. This game is for one, maybe two times to walktrough, not more, 3rd time getting totally boring. Anyway I had fun and good emotes.

But the game hits a point where it starts to drag, and drag, and drag, forcing you to slog through a seemingly endless mire of uninteresting content just to get to a few good moments. Definitely an example of a game which really shouldn't have been open world. Memorable character arcs and story missions are painfully few and far between once the game really gets under way. And there are only so many random encounters and "scan six items" side quests you can do before you just start blowing through everything in a desperate bid to get to the rest of the damn good stuff. Then, after all that slog, the main plot fails to deliver anything close to the dramatic conclusion offered by earlier games. Don't hold your breath for a heart-pounding suicide mission here. The game just sort of... ends, leaving little more than a sense of "oh, that was it?" Expand

This really seems to come down to your expectations. If you're a hardcore ME fan you may very well not like it (and there's nothing wrong with that). If this is your 1st ME game, it's a pretty good introduction, even if it's not the strongest in the history of gaming.

While I kind of enjoyed it, It definitely didn't live up to my expectations in terms of story. Maybe that's just because of my fondness for the OT, maybe not.

So yh, while not a bad game, I can't say this is a good game either. I'd recommend to someone who hasn't played the OT and doesn't mind some bugs, and some pretty sub-par but at times hilarious animations.

I don't think I'd recommend to a casual ME fan though, only the hardcore so to speak.

But meh, this is just some idiots opinion.

    Pros:
Sci-Fi adventure in space. Lots of ground to cover, freedom of movement. Vehicle is a decent mode of transportation this time. Skyboxes of planets are amazing so driving around the alien planet and just looking at it is quite fun. There is a decent horde mode multiplayer. Few companion characters are memorable.

Cons: Much, much weaker than any of the original games as far as story and characters go. Nothing even comes close to Harbinger lines and the general feeling of ME1, squad of ME2 or atmosphere doom and gloom in ME3. Technical issues are apparent though you will learn to ignore those pretty fast. Some writers push their political agenda in most obvious and appalling manner.

    - New Alien species
    - Characters are interesting, atleast your companions!
    - Part of the story is actually very interesting!
    - Jetpack!
    - Much lore to discover.

    Mixed:
    - The scanner, It is partly fun to use, but much of the scanning consists of completely unnecessary information.
    - Puzzles, can be both fun and repetive, overall its OK i guess.
    - I like the story but not a special part of it. (will not spoil)
    - The mechanics, we are in 2017, I think they should have developed the gameplay significantly in 5 years but I was wrong, it feels OK.

    Cons:
    - Animation feels strange and some characters can sometimes look completely retarded.
    - "character customization" is not what it says, you can choose from some preset faces and only change the nose and hair, other than that nope.
    - Expressions in dialogues may feel a little weird sometimes.
    - Bugs, not too many, but when it happens too often you become irritated.
    - The World doesn't feel "living".

Andromeda is a fun game but needs to be polished. The mechanics and the animation could be better and it would be good if the development team fixed the bugs as soon as possible. Just then I had been able to give the game a higher rating. I think that the good outweighs the bad, so give it a chance to play anyway!

ME:A is all over the place. In the 38 hours I've played, I've found that it covers the full range: sometimes the game feels like a well-oiled machine, other times it feels like a complete cluster****, but the majority of the time it feels a decent game that had the potential to be much better than it is and just needed more time and polish to achieve it. Combat is solid, fantastic even. The "main story" is pretty weak and is filled with cliches. The facial animations can be as bad as some people have noted, and there is some pretty cringeworthy dialogue at times. The music is just fair, but the audio itself is superb for the most part.

As far as bugs, the only one I've had to deal with involved some sort of conflict between Logitech's gaming software and ME:A. It was causing horrible audio and visual stuttering and latency which built up over time. The moment I turned off the software, however, the game began running flawlessly. (I play on PC in 1440p Ultra.) I've yet to encounter any significant in-game bugs. And, I've not suffered a single crash or freeze.

This game deserves a 6.5 or 7 out of 10 as is, but I do believe it could be patched up to an 8 (this may be a stretch) if they can fix some of the creepier facial animation, weird camera angles, and audio bugs.

Think of it this way, the Andromeda Initiative started at the end of Mass Effect 1. The game play and graphics are still from that time period (except that this is real life), and they might have picked up some ME2 improvements before they left.

Not going to make this overly long, ain't nobody got time for that. A couple of short prefaces:
Played all three ME games in the trilogy, the first two at length (100+ hours, multiple playthroughs), and the rest of the Bioware lineup (Jade Empire, KOTOR, Dragon Age: O).

And let me say it's a shame this game got the review bomb it got. Whilst I do not contest the amount of bugs the game has, I don't feel like that should entirely bring down the score. Underneath there is a lot of attention to detail, a storyline that is mostly crafted through gameplay (helping the people survive on their new home, sorting out their problems), which was a step-up from everything boiling down to firefights with a paragon or renegade dialogue option at the end like in the previous games.

The visuals are simply stunning, and the game manages to uphold a excellent level of performance. Was able to run it 80-120 fps on Ultra settings, 1080p on a GTX 1070 + i5-4670K (4.3ghz, 2400CL11 memory) with Adative V-sync. Driving through Kadar, standing on the mountaintops gave me that feeling of the Original Mako sections in ME1 which were in my opinion the best sections, albeit devoid of content. Which isn't the case in Andromeda.

Dialogue is hit or miss, it feels like the quality depends on who wrote it. Some of it is vapid, but some of it feels genuine and engaging. Barring a few remarks I do not agree it has a lot of SJW rethoric riddled through it. The overal storyarch is cannon, but honestly it's been done to death and as a sci-fi show nerd I'd be hardpressed if they found a new angle to coax up a spacevillian.

The bugs are, to be honest, the reason this game is only a 7/10. They are present enough to be a genuine nuisance, even if you're not looking for material on a glitch compilation video. The most eggregious are mostly evolved around SAM, your AI. It also counts as a gateway to tutorials, but it doesn't know when to shut up. It repeats the same dialogue options over and over again. That you can mine this area, that you entered a hostile enviroment, that there are enemies, etc. SAM should get a mute button, or have him exhaust dialogue only once. On the same note, quest dialogue options also never exhaust, so i'm pretty sure it's a glitch throughout the entire game. When you re-enter an area that was used for a quest, the same dialogue starts again. This needs a FIX asap, because it shatters suspension of disbelief and ruins immersion.

The rest are minor quality of life bugs, and less frequent. NPC's snapping into spots, t-posing, allies flying in the air, enemies stuck in scenery. Etc. As for the Animations and lipsyncing, a lot of it has to do with keyboard controls ruining the availability of the animation transitions. Like being able to spam A and D makes the legs to crazy, whereas you can't do this on a controller. It's an oversight. The facial animations were already changed a little when I played it (eyes etc), and honestly it was just like any other Bioware game. So why this all of a sudden caused the internet to go crazy beats me. Just don't use the default 'femshep', make a custom one, and you won't have those "Alec is dead?" moments.

Some good and bad, "deputy likes dots".
    + Visuals, performance.
+ Interactions with crewmembers is on ME2 level.
    + Story through gameplay

    - Overly sappy dialogue options without alternatives of the "it's going to be ok" variety.
    - Dialogue options not exhausting
    - Rest of the bugs
    - Repetitive sidemissions at some point.

Overall this feels like it could've used some extra love and care, and I hope EA/Bioware give it despite the review bombing. It would help them revive some of their credibility. As underneath it's a pretty good game, but the bugs and rough edges drag it down severely. As this is a game mostly about immersion, if a character you're having a conversation with glitches into the floor, it shatters your suspension of disbelief and ruins the experience.

Give it some more love Bioware, and make SAM shut up.

Now to the what was "average" in the game
Most of the characters where average, the planet exploration was okay, but everything was way too far apart and had a lot of "dead space" multiplayer was passable.

And last but least what was terrible in the game.
Animations, both facial and body animations were terrible outside of combat, my character refused to watch the person I was talking to the eyes where all over the place (really distracting to me) the travelling in the galaxy was garbage (got a little bit fix after the patch) missions boring also every mission felt the same, story predictable (added bonus trailer had a HUGE spoiler) main character was bland.
Was this a total garbage game, no. But giving the game a zero is too much. I will make a new review once the game is fixed but until I think it's 5/10
Not sure who dropped the ball, but knowing EA, it's probably them wouldn't be the first time EA said to release a unfinished game.

For the bad points: it's not biowares best writing, but I also think people hold biowares writing too high, and I say this as a huge fan of bioware. Like Mass Effect 3, they really shove who they want your character to be onto you. In 3, they want you to have a serious Shepard and for Andromeda they want you to have a silly Ryder. Sure, it gives you serious dialogue but in all the places you can't choose what to say, Ryder is laid back and fooling around. Your choices while hard have little consequence, mostly just changing who shows up at the final battle , there are game breaking bugs and the final battle was dissapointing. Another thing is that if you don't choose the default Ryder the facial animations aren't bad, they're fine...but often Ryder isn't hugely expressive in their face. I think there only being 2 alien races is fine considering there aren't Mass Relays to fling everyone around. The reapers manipulated people to find the citadel...we don't HAVE that in Andromeda. Having few aliens makes sense.
All this being said, I loved playing it. Despite it's writing flaws, the story was still interesting. Your crew was complex and interesting. Some of them hate each other which make car rides interesting. It has glaring flaws but it's not 'the fall of bioware' or 'a stain of the industry' like people are saying.

At the same time, people are making these problems out to be bigger than they actually are. After 11 hours of gameplay, I've maybe come across 5 instances of animation where I thought "this is really ridiculous". The rest of it, while far from amazing, is within acceptable levels.

I've only got one big gripe with the game and that's that I can only equip 3 skills in combat. That is something that's really detrimental to my enjoyment of the game, seeing how you've got 24 active skills to pick from while you can only ever have 3 equipped. But that's it.

The game may not contain anything groundbreaking or even particularly outstanding, but it's enjoyable nonetheless. That's enough for me. Not every game has to be the next Witcher 3.

On the surface it seems to offer you a lot but it is a shallow unrewarding experience. You can see there was a lot of work put into the game but without the a good core story and well written characters, it fails to pull me into it or let alone even care about it. The writing is so painful, I avoid conversations with my main crew members. I feel no connection to them unlike the previous titles, which I would make every effort to get everyone on board. With the story, if feels so off the cuff, matter of fact, when you just met a new offworld species. It is not convincing and throws you off. Are there any bad choices? I feel like there is no real importance to any decisions you make. Your just "following the trigger script" to progress the game. The question is, should a person invest 100+ hours playing something, just because or should I continue playing, just to finish it. There are extremes reviews of flat out bashing or outright praising. I think the review sites are fair at saying this is a 6/10. You can see there was allot of work put into it but it is way, WAY over-reaching, as far as what really matters to make this a fun game to play or even care about. Expand

There is a lot of game for the money... unfortunately its unpolished, uncomfortable with okay story, okay characters ... "okay" everything.
It's a mediocre RPG with many strange decisions and a step back for the franchise. It's basically a worse version of Inquisition in a different setting.
Both 10's and 0's are equally rediculous....!

Gun-play, weapon mechanics, and combat are decent. Some of the worlds are beautiful. Atmosphere can be good from time to time. But that's pretty much it about whats good about the game. Everything else is either bland, generic, boring or just flat out bad.

Don't recommend unless you're a die hard mass effect fan but even then maybe you should wait until they're doing patching it or it goes on sale.

I loved the first trilogy and this Mass Effect is a complete different kind of game and this is good. The only problem for me is every things they made differently is bad or boring.

-Animation: First when you start the game you are welcomed with broken animation everywhere, but this is just a minor problem, it can be fixed and this is Mass Effect it should be good even with that.

    -Game play
Next step, Gunfight. I really don't understand why we cannot stop the fight to control our partners actions. All is very very action, I don't like the new system where you can't equip more than 2 powers but have to switch to different profile. The fight are always dashing everywhere trying to cover.
Some gunfight are difficult, boss fights where nicely organized.
So for the gameplay I don't liked it but it's not bad it is just my personal feeling about it.

    Exploration:
The exploration is good, a mixed between Mass Effect 1 for the Mako and Dragon Age inquisiton (I loved it) for the out post system and the tower to activate to find a final cave or whatever secret thing. The system with the five (I think) planet to colonized is rewarding because you can feel the evolution of it talking to people in the main Hub and by destroying the threat it will became (almost) peaceful place to live on.

    Story and characters:
This point was the most important and I'm very very very very disappointed about it. No spoiler ahead but the story is boring af, the end was terribly... Average. I almost feel like every characters on the Tempest were cliché (Good point for the Sera from Dragon Age disguised in Asari).
I tried to do a maximum side quest possible before the main quest but I was blocked waiting to receive mail from my team mates to continue their side quests. Like seriously? And then I did one mission and everybody sent me mail so I was submerged with side quest all of a sudden..
I'm going to start a New Game + but I'm not as excited has I'm still am when I start again the first trilogy or even a Dragon Age game.

Conclusion: Returning into the Mass Effect universe feels good. The Andromeda initiative is a good concept for a game, the main story of exploring planet and the exploration itself is nicely done. The gunfights are what they are you like it or not but you can't say it's bad. But thanks to a lot of bug and a poor story telling I cannot say I'm happy with this game and I'm very sad of it.
But your opinion will be the best so try the game if you never played any Mass Effect you can start here and you will discover one of the biggest and best universe of the video game history.

Final Point: I personally don't think that the open world fit well here and really don't know why because I liked it with Dragon age inquisition. But a good linear game is better than an average open world one.

    Sorry for bad English.

However it seems kind of unfinished. It left lot of space for the sequel(s) and not taken the advantage of it just yet. Maybe DLCs will make it way more interesting and "finished". I can see why many ME fans can be disappointed and I'm a huge one myself which maybe makes me less objective but remember - That's not Shepard's story and I doubt it will beat it but the circumstances are way different, new galaxy, new challenges, exploration. It's amazing in it's way but not that much catching our hearts like trying to save the Milky Way from annihilation. Give it a try it's worth it. Very good game in my opinion and has a lot of unused potential. However take in mind that it's different and it's difficult to catch up with the old ones.
PS. I think that the combat and leveling system is better though!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's start with the fact that I've been a huge fan of Mass Effect ever since the first game came out. I've replayed the whole trilogy about 5 times and just ME2 so many times that I've almost memorised every fight and dialogue. I'm also a big fan of Dragon Age series and Jade Empire. Oh, and I've played as female Ryder.
A few months before Andromeda came out, I'd braced myself for the worst. I wasn't very happy with squadmates designs, but I kept telling myself to stay positive - sure, Cora and Liam look boring but it was the same with Ash with Kaidan and Miranda with Jacob. I was hoping for a variety of other interesting teammates. Personally, I think that in these BioWare games a good team is a half of success. Then I've heard about animation problems, which upset me - graphics aren't the most important thing (Undertale is an extreme example for that) but from this kind of game it is expected to have beautiful aesthetics. I've also braced myself for a completely new approach to ME universe - no Shepard, no Garrus, no Tali (or any quarians, for that matter!). I don't think it's a very big problem to me, I never saw it as an issue in new Dragon Age games.
And so, I finally bought the game last week (so expensive too, sigh). It's worth adding that my laptop only allowed me to play on the lowest settings, so that might have influenced my judgement. I've just finished and honestly, the only word I can think of to describe the game is: meh.
The game has its advantages. Obviously, I didn't go with standard Sara Ryder, I designed her in a way that she was ALMOST pretty (not easy!). While I still have mixed feelings about her character, I overall liked her. She was more relatable than Shepard, that's for sure. She was sassy, funny and sometimes awkward, much unlike the usual heroic commander Shepard. I'd say both protagonists have their pluses and minuses - Shepard gave the whole game a more epic feeling, but Ryder is in some ways more likeable.
Now, about the squadmates. The good ones include Liam (a positive surprise, I was worried he might be boring like Kaidan or Jacob, but he was really alright), Drack (no surprises here, krogans are always the best teammates) and Jaal (sweet, like I expected). Kallo was alright - a bit of disappointment, since salarians are my favourite race, so was Vectra. Peebee, Cora, and Suvi were irritating (honestly, I thought I'd throw my earphones across the room when I was scanning the planets and had to listen to her annoying voice on repeat) and I had absolutely no opinion on Lexi. I wish there were more squadmates to choose from.
Animation - what else is there to say? Everyone has already said something about it, so there's no point in dwelling on it. Yep, faces animation was terrible, eyes were soulless and female characters were all ugly, what the heck. Don't even get me started on asari, weren't they supposed to be the Attractive race with a capital A? They were even worse than humans.
Another minus - the villain. The Archont wasn't intimidating nor interesting at all, in my opinion. I didn't really understand what's his deal and I was hoping he wouldn't be the final boss. Oh well. Also, the bad guys are called the Kett? Like the Geth in ME1? I find it especially irritating since in Polish both of these names sound almost exactly the same (we also read "geth" as "gett"). They could think of something a bit different.
Exploring the universe was terrible. I did have to keep a book by my side when I decided I would 100% all of the systems. No hidden quests, no scanning, just right click on your mouse and bam - the planet is added to your journal. Now, wait half a minute to fly to the one next to it. No wonder people say it's a long game, I feel like half of the time was spent on flying from one planet to another (or opening the doors on Kadara).
I know I sound terribly displeased, but the game wasn't all that terrible. The quests were alright, they kept me busy, the design of new planets was good too. I liked that Andromeda seems to give you more opportunities to bond with your teammates than previous BioWare RPGs (but still, I didn't feel very attached to them, sadly. There are some holes there, too, especially when it comes to romances. I was quite displeased that my LI (Jaal) had nearly no interactions with other characters that would imply that Ryder and he are involved. I mean, my Ryder was already in a relationship with him when she started to aggressively hit on Reyes and Jaal had no reaction at all. I was hoping for something interesting to happen. And the dialogue with him didn't change after they got together.
To sum up - was it the worst BioWare RPG so far? Yep. Do I regret playing it? No, it kept me busy. And since it's a completely new story, it didn't ruin the original trilogy. Mostly it made me want to replay it yet again, so now excuse me, while I go play it or the Witcher 3. That's what I recommend to all the other unsatisfied fans, too.

If you're looking for story and character development you might not be satisfied with this, at least from what the first 10 hours of play shows. But if fightin' in space is where your fun is at, this is a decent play.

The game feels hollow and lacks those magic moments that can be found all across the original trilogy. The lack of interesting companions is a big issue, which adds to the mediocre writing and subpar facial animations. Immersion takes obviously a toll here. I do believe that they spent way too much time discussing SJW nonsense instead of actually developing the story, the characters and the narrative.

However, the game is not bad itself. Any indie studio would have earned 9s across the board with this game for sure. The problem is that its being compared to one of the greatest (arguably the greatest) trilogy of all time in the gaming world.

It does not deserve such number of bad ratings. If you liked the original you will def. have a good time with this one.

However Andromeda has laid down a baseline that could have some seriously good story behind it that could pan out to be a good addition to the franchise if properly executed this time. My thoughts on how the series will move forward are that the Kett are not going away but will not play a big role in the next game, allowing for hopefully a more realized and interesting threat. Remember the Helius Cluster is a small part of Andromeda and there is much more to explore like what has happened to the Quarian ark that left late. Now I know this sounds like I'm being a fan boy and to an extent I am. It's a TPS like Zero Dawn, Far Cry and so on. So i'll judge it as such. For example i don't give a **** about dialog wheel and no alignment (or how you prefer to call this paragon/renegade system from past MEs). And anyway it's better than what i saw in Fallout 4 (worst one ever). And I don’t see ME as a great game also. It was good, no questions here, but first game had its share of tech issues (on a level of Andromeda or near it), second one was a very weak game overall and plot of the third one was like one big “f*ck you guys”.
So let's start. If you ask me to describe Andromeda in a few words i'll say "Improved Dragon Age: Inquisition". So first of all this game is not for all. It’s all about exploration, one main goal (like closing all rifts in DA:I) and little side quests here and there. And in-game characters can’t stop saying you that. So if you don’t fill like “oh I wonder what’s going on in this cave” in games like Skyrim, Horizon or Zelda this game isn’t your cup of tea and that’s ok. As for that “Improved” part. Side quests in DA:I was bad, “bring me 10 rat tails” bad. In Andromeda thing are better. No, quests like find 16 minerals still there (like cups, metal flowers and so on in Horizon) but it’s all up to you if you want to do so. I see this in every open world game lately so I guess there are people who like collection quests like that. Anyway most quests are solid side quests now. A lot of people complain that it’s MMO-like. Nope. It’s “open world game”-like. Sorry but if you expected Andromeda to be something else it’s not this game fault.
Graphics strangely enough is good and awful at the same time. How is that possible? Well you probably saw a lot of gifs about character animation. Sadly that’s all true. Characters in this game look like **** Not only animation is weird (it’s less obvious while you playing rather than watching but still), but skin textures, some glitches. Overall characters don’t look like humans/aliens and more like plastic dolls. On the other hand maps are looking good. First planet with all that lightning strikes, flying rocks and mantas was a very good first impression. Not breathtaking but still really good.
As per plot it’s ok so far, but there a lot of holes in lore and weird moments overall. Don’t know how much of that is legit and how much just me not reading something where it was explained. For example how we became human Pathfinder. Like screw everything you are a boss now. Or how ships are flying without mass relays? That weird tunnel like thing in cutscene, what is that? Well, space crafts could fly between star systems in previous ME games, but not like it was fast and it required a lot of fuel (remember that fuel stations?). How small shuttles could fly all over the place (in one side quest we are chasing this tiny thing almost all over the map)? How this whole thing is even possible (even Reapers needed mass relays)?
Now to gameplay. Sadly almost nothing changed here since other MEs. It’s still the weakest part of the whole game as I see it. Difficulty level is all about making enemies into bullet sponges (and ramping up their damage too). I started playing Andromeda as stealthy sniper keeping in mind open world thing. That was a mistake. Why? Because enemies have two reactions on your shots: they just stand there (if you further than some mystical invisible line) or they start shooting back from machine pistols/assault rifle/machineguns with accuracy of my sniper rifle. Is it fun? Nope. But also there are mission fights when you start in CQC on some arena like area and that sucks too. Because you fragile, your weapon rate of fire is awful and you forced into CQC. I thought about taking tanky party members. That didn’t help a thing. Friendly AI is awful. It shooting walls, standing there doing nothing or whatever. And there are no taunts or something. And enemies are like “why risking with this huge armored krogan, get that skinny humie with sniper rifle”. So they will go after you anyway. So I guess class balance is still not there after 4 games. Add to that no quick saves or checkpoints! Only manual saves (not always available) or autosave. Get into 3 stage fight with gigantic robot and got killed on 3rd stage? Start over from 10 minutes before that fight. What a joy! So I don’t see any points in playing above easiest difficulty because it’s just pointless and frustrating.
So Andromeda isn’t an awful game like a lot of people trying to picture it. It’s an ok game that could be about 6 or 7 out 10 but it riddled with lots of technical problems. Not game braking ones, but still. So now it’s just 5 out of 10. If you’re thinking about buying Andromeda – I’ll say don’t do that now. Wait a bit for EA to fix some issues and for price to drop.

This game does have some shiny moments and the combat is great, but the game lacks any real challenge and the story isn't good enough to make up for the hours spent on "getting ready" for.

out of 120 hours I enjoyed only 20, still - worth the money and the experience. They made a very good base and got lost on the way...

Mas Effect Andromeda is a good game but it has many flaws. Let me start off with the negatives, since I believe people should be warn of these first going in. As this is my first Mass Effect game therefore, I come as this with no ties to Shepard or anything before.

Mas Effect Andromeda is a good game but it has many flaws. Let me start off with the negatives, since I believe people should be warn of these first going in. As this is my first Mass Effect game therefore, I come as this with no ties to Shepard or anything before.

The bugs…omg the bugs are so bad. I can let pass a few bugs here and there, even the animations issue doesn’t bother me as much. The bugs though, they hurt your immersion and gameplay. The two common bugs I have experience are enemies either getting spawned underground or inside structures where you are unable to damage them with gun fire, and have to hope you can find them and maybe damage them with biotic powers that go through walls or reload the game. The other with the quest log that will stop tracking quest so I have no idea where I not to go to complete them or the quest just get broken.

The story is meh at best. The main villain doesn’t really make his presence felt tell the last few main missions and there is no mini boss or underling to the main villain to keep you motivated to go after them and the main villain. No sense of “I can’t wait to get that guy” The main enemies (the Kett) are just there, they don’t really feel like much of a threat and they tend to be boring.

Questing and dialogue. Look I understand Bioware tried to be different and innovative with the dialogue by making you past responses effect your future ones, but omg the responses you get tend to get are terrible or just don’t match up to what the text below says or what your character Actually! Says. I can’t name how many times, I was like “WHY WOULD I SAY THAT!” or “Both these options are the SAME THING, just worded slightly different.” Menus…good luck navigating and understanding those at the start.

    GOOD

The combat is great and has good variety. You can really pick from many different styles and you get a wide variety of weapons and modifications you can do with them. The game also looks really good and the travel between planets looks really good. BUT…the transitions usually take about 20 secs and currently these are none skippable. So after visiting your 5 of 6 planet this get old and start to get annoying. (Updated: This has been patch somewhat, but still worth mentioning in my opinion) The worlds themselves look impressive and they are fun to travel around in with your nomad and fighting when using your jetpack. The squad mates are a mix bag, but I believe there are at least one for most people to like. Plus, it is fun to hear the different banter depending on who you have on your squad at the time when traveling a planet. So yes a good game with many flaws.

I was and still am a huge fan of the Mass Effect Universe but this installment just broke my heart after 5 years of waiting.
After completing the game 100%, sinking 75 hours, and acquiring level 130 - I have created these notes:

    Good:
    - Interesting story, overall.
    - Brought back and greatly improved the weapon customization from ME1.
    - Vehicular exploration with the Nomad (unarmed Mako) was somewhat entertaining.
    - Jump jets and evades were interesting changes to combat.
    - Alec changes appearance based on customized siblings.

    Bad:
    - MMO-style missions (kill X number of Y) which make you run around and re-kill respawning mobs for hours.
    - Horrible and ultra-dry humor which is constantly crammed down your throat during almost every interaction (British humor).
    - Overboard politically correctness with the dialogue and the ability to **** every living being in order to satisfy the pan-sexual demi-queer foxkin bloggers.
    - WEAK conventional weapons. Compared to the powers, the weapons are almost useless or just used to suppress enemies while recharging abilities. You could unload full mags into generic enemy heads without killing them.
    - Lack of emotion in the voice acting. Male Ryder is a MASSIVE **** I get it, he isn't a soldier like Shepard.. However, Ryder encounters a **** of combat and plays a major leadership role for the entire Initiative - his personality should change and reflect that.
    - Multiplayer is a recycled version of the ME3 multiplayer.
    - Unable to micromanage or customize squadmates like in the trilogy - making them godawful during combat.
-Uninteresting squadmates. They have bland backgrounds and are restricted from being controversial. They all remind me of Jacob from ME2.. Boring as ****

    Ugly:
    - Major animation and movement bugs, causing people to get stuck or fall through the floor. Suvi would never stand during some animations and would move around as if she was still sitting down.
    - Recycled graphics and animations which are not put together very well.
    - Horrible soundtrack compared to the original trilogy which lacks immersion and excitement (think ME2 during the Suicide Mission).

I really hope BioWare addresses these issues before the sequel. BRING BACK CASEY HUDSON!

Let's kick off with the positives. The visual aesthetics are stunning. One of the first three planets looks amazing. The other two are fine, but that particular one stands out massively. This also applies to space travel animations.
There is tons of content. I'm a completionist. Thus, I like to explore every single corner of the map, picking up all of the crates and nodes I can get my hands on and doing all sidequests. As a result, 60 hours into the game, I am only at 36% progression.
The crafting system is more complex than before. Unfortunately, there are no proper tips to become thoroughly acquainted with it. You actually have to Google stuff. There is a good variety of weapons, mods and gear.
Your new ground vehicle - Nomad - is much more agile and now also serves mining purposes. It can and should be upgraded.
Andromeda Viability Points are a wonderful idea, tying into progression and storyline. They make perfect sense and improve immersion. Basically, the more you do, the more viable your planets become.
Last but not least, combat. It has certainly improved, becoming more fast-paced, active. Jump jets and dashes help a lot.
The negatives. Oh boy, here we go. Bland Companions. Honestly, wtf? 36% into the game and I do not give a damn about their cardboard personalities. If this ME has a suicide mission (like the second one), I won't care about any of them. BioWare has failed to make any compelling companion. Gone are the days of Garrus, Wrex, Tali. Hell, even Jacob was miles better than any Andromeda companions. On top of this, you can’t equip your companions or command them to use their skills in this game.
Facial animations. Yes, it's true. There are plenty of horrendous facial animations or movement glitches. Be prepared.
Lackluster dialogue choices. You want to be a super good guy or a badass who does not give a **** about anyone else but himself? Too bad. Your dialogue choices are limited to "optimistic meh" and "reasonable meh". There is no badassery and, if you go with the good and sympathetic choices, your charecter tends to make a joke out of everything. Disappointing to say the least.
LGBT crap. I get it, BioWare wants to be super tolerant, but, for **** sake, I don't want to see gays and lesbians in every single corner of my spaceship. Wtf is with this crap? We have had gay characters in the previous games (Traynor and Cortez) and it was perfectly fine, but it has never been so much "in your face". The game clearly panders to the SJWs (social justice warriors). There are no decently looking females among your crewmembers. The only hot girl turns out to be a lesbian. What a bummer.
On top of this there are plenty of glitches and bugs.
That being said, the pathfinder part of this game and the stunning and immersive environments are what actually make this game worth playing. That and the incredible amount of content. But this game could have been so much more. I'd rate it as 7, but just because of all the dull companions (which are integral part of any ME game) and the force-fed LGBT agenda I will give ME: Andromeda a 5. BioWare is not getting away with a good grade from me.

Andromeda has your typical fetch quests like any RPG, but there is a plethora of content in this game. This game, in NO way, compares to the previous Mass Effect series. The writing is pretty dull, to say the least. It is really hard for me to connect with any of the characters. Strangely, I still have this nagging urge to play more.
The negative criticism this game has received since the release last month is well warranted, however, those giving this game Meta scores of 1's and 4's seem a little hypercritical. Bioware promises to implement some patches to fix "most" of their mistakes. Here's to hoping the Mass Effect universe does not end in Andromeda.

Directing and Cinematography 6.5/10 - Comparing the directing style to the previous Mass Effect Trilogy, there are many harsh cuts, interrupt zoom-ins and close-ups. There seems to be a lack of pans. The cinematography style is a bit bland at times, which in this case, at all time. It is but not as bad as Dragon Age: Inquisition though, where you have to download a crappy mod-manager and a mod for goddamn zoom-ins.

Gameplay and Combat 10/10 - Hella fun.

Graphics 7.5/10 - Honestly, the Frostbite engine is never any good when it comes to realism. Plus, Bioware always sucked at character creations. Everybody's damn ugly. Even Scott. No offense to the extremely sexy face models.

Animations 5/10 - Everything is fine. Except for the facial animations of course. The change from Unreal Engine to Frostbite may have caused the many problems, and it's possibly due to the fact that the animators had to start it up from stretch and plus the developing team that worked on the game are relatively new and inexperienced. The patch helped, but the characters do still seem a bit stiff, even compared to Dragon Age: Inquisition, which was also made from the Frostbite Engine. The developers seem to be also trying some experimental motion capture. Which doesn't look very good. Right now the characters look like they're always kissing the air, and it's Uncanny Valley at its max thanks to the experimental facial motion capture combined with the already poor facial animations. Better luck next time. But it's an alright start.

While my love for the series as a whole has tempered my opinion to this game, I can honestly say for certain that after about fifteen hours into it I'm still enthralled. As Ryder, I've been taking my time exploring what the new setting has to offer, and have been going through the missions one step at a time. It's really taken hold of me, and I can't wait to see the end. (I've heard it's disappointing, but I'll let my own judgement decide that for me)

That being said, the game has issues. Lots of issues. Glitches, animation bugs, questionable design choices...The set pieces are nice, the RPG aspects of the Mass Effect series seem to be making a return from the original, the character customization might be a bit lacking in the appearance department and the...female models definitely leave a lot to be desired. These slightly mar the experience a bit, but it's definitely not enough to give this game anything below a 5 or a 6-point score.

Rather than giving it a point, though, what I want to do is RECOMMEND THIS GAME FOR PURCHASE. It's not perfect, and the whole experience is kind of hampered by the fact that (1) a lot of folks were expecting so much and (2) it's riding off of the coat-tails (and the controversy that follows it) of Mass Effect 3, but I sincerely hope that they give Ryder their own trilogy to rival the original. There's a lot they can learn from with this game, and I hope they take those experiences to make the next one event better.

Of course the story has many stock phrases, banalities, copy-pastes from sci-fy movies and books. But you can live in this Universe filled with bunch of interesting details. You can feel inside this story. It took 2 hours to me to became a part of the Mass Effect Universe and the next 130 hours were beautiful.
I waited for the game, I watched the trailers. I read everything concerning MEA. And today I am disappointed.
The plot is flat, details are useless, animation is ugly, dialogs are stupid - Bioware have managed to put all my fears together in one game. I cannot see the characters around me because they're not people but ugly plastic dolls. How am I supposed to be inside the story? - The voice actor are ok but it feels like they recorded their line out of context. Which makes them sound robotic, emotionless at times.

It's a mediocre game exactly like DA:I in space, no wonder they name them in the same scheme. Mediocre games in the best brands, which result in nothing but extreme disappointment.

Actual game-play was functional enough (though restrictive) but I saw it only a way to forward the story. Antagonists felt like a real threat and they had their individual motivations to fight against the player. Afterwards I've imagined that Saren and Illusive Man would work fine as a playable characters in their own separate games.

ME: Andromeda stumble at crucial points but here's the biggest issue: Weak narrative. In ME-trilogy dialogue was there to push the story forward. If it wasn't then the dialogue built the characters and gave an insight to their background and motives for the player.

Andromeda fails the narrative and there is a reason for this which is weak directing by Mac Walters. He is a great writer (no doubt about that) but doesn't seems to know how to enliven written to a game world properly. It's a pity because the story, characters and dialogue has a huge promising which is never used properly.

After the poorly delivered story there is only a 3rd person shooter-RPG which is great but repetitive. Visuals are also great but unpolished from time to time. I had not game breaking bugs but a lot minor ones mostly with animations and scripting errors.

Summary: A huge disappointment for a Mass Effect fan but a decent shooter-RPG for a newcomer.

Animations are definitely bad and some of the dialogue writing is questionable. But the gameplay is very fun, easily the best in the series, although I dislike losing control of my squadmates' abilities and the lack of manual saves during "Priority Missions" is a puzzling design choice and needs to be rectified with a patch.

The ambient music is excellent but the OST itself is an uninspired, generic blend of John Williams-meets-Martin O'Donnell. This game badly needs Jack Wall back; his scores for ME1 and (especially) ME2 were jaw-dropping.

All-in-all, I really like the game. It has its moments, but it definitely has some serious flaws as well.

Bioware is done. It's another company now, it's just the name that's the same. The same thing applies to this game compared to the trilogy.Sad but true.

What is very good imo is that 2017 had the best start as far as gaming is conserned since many a year.Persona 5,Nioh, Nier Automata, Horizon dawn, Breath of the wild..These are rare gems. Very very strong opening for 2017, hope that this continuous, the industry was plugged by playing safe, take no risks ,no innovation,no love games like Andromeda.

Whatever great games are released though, mass effect will always remain the series that a developed the strongest emotional attachment to.

DLC could save this game, and it could use some Witcher 3 style expansion dlc or something to bring out more of it, but the main issue is that it is a singleplayer mmo. If you focus on the main story then a lot of the issues won't be experienced outside of bugs and animation issues (I wore a helmet so Iw ouldn't be bothered by most of them) but you'll find a content drought at times when talking to characters as you find dialog doesn't really develop into more options or changes, especially the Nexus, and most outposts are repetitive and have no new content outside of EOS. Even vaults become a bit repetitive as only the first few are really "exploration", but regardless of all that it's still worth playing and it's still an experience I don't regret.

So 6.5-7 out of 10 is my score.

Metacritic isn't reliable as a source of 10 vs 0 because no one really using the full scale, but the positive and negative meters show a significant difference but still show people can enjoy it.

This game has some serious flaws. Most of which could be fixed in several months as modders start repairing what Bioware broke. It isn't a terrible game, but it certainly feels sub-par when compared to the other Mass Effect games.

The flaws in the combat system shine the greatest when playing on the hardest difficulty as you will often be cursing the things that get you killed the most. It is here where it feels like a serious downgrade from previous Mass Effect games. The only commands you can give to your squad is to either follow you or go to a location (which is very clunky and doesn't work as expected half the time). You can't order your squadmates to use their abilities at crucial times, you just have to hope the AI is smart enough to realize the correct time to use them (spoiler, they usually don't). Most of the enemies tend to gun for your character instead of your squadmates, so they aren't even very useful as decoys. And cover feels particularly worthless as almost any enemy will bum rush your location to flank you. Any semblance of tactics in this game have been completely overshadowed by the major focus on Rambo style combat that is pain in the butt to do at higher level difficulties.

As for the side quests (or Task missions), here is my advice, don't do them. You will spend more time aimlessly roaming massive landscapes looking for randomly generated quest objectives than you will getting your butt kicked by a Revenant Architect on insane difficulty. They don't offer much in the way of story and the rewards you get in no way outweigh the effort put in to completing them.

As many have said, the majority of the facial animations are bad. There are some moments where they are good, but most of the time the non-essential NPCs look like zombies with crazy twitching eyes. This is only made worse by the fact that your camera zooms in on the NPC you're speaking to, making the poor facial animations even more apparent than if it was zoomed out (like in other Mass Effect games).

There are also allot of unskippable cutscenes in the game. I understand that allot of them are there to hide loading screens, but the one place they should be cut down on is in the galaxy map. While it was cool to look at first, it quickly became annoying as you have a cutscene every time you try to look at a new planet. The galaxy map should be an interface to get you where you need to go in the most efficient way possible, not a starfield simulator that adds unnecessary padding to an already long game.

Customization in this game is worse than the previous Mass Effect games. The character creator is arguably worse than the one from ME1. Your character will basically end up looking like one of 9 different faces as you can't choose to switch out eyes, ears, nose, or mouth. The sliders allow you to change to change the size and position of individual facial parts, but your character basically ends up looking like a deformed variant of one of the 9 faces. And the locking of certain skin tones from certain faces is also a major bummer as it even further cuts down on the customization. Your squadmates are also severely lacking in customization options. In previous Mass Effect games, you could change their loadout, select different skins, and have more than 3 active abilities to choose from in their skills. The only options your really get with your squad is choosing which skills to max out first.

I've been a fan of Bioware games since the first KOTOR, and Mass Effect Andromeda is probably one of the biggest letdowns that they have produced to date.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After finishing the game and the announcement of no additional SP content coming, I'm doing another review.

The positive: The game is solid now. Mostly bugfree and the animations have been fixed for the largest parts.

The mediocre: Story, straight from the rack. Companions, apart from Drack and Peebee, the worst turnout of any Bioware game. In previous games, I couldn't wait to discuss our progress with the companions. In this game I get the feeling of do I really have to talk with that companion again. They're mostly cliche, with Gil sticking out like a sore thumb. He's the virtual gay checklist being ticked off. Gay, female best friend, wants to become a parent, becomes parent with female best friend. When I learned about his story, I was sure, a homophobe had written this. Liam, the guy that even the squadmates despise. So how would the player react differently to this annoying and boring cardboard? Then there's the lead character, Ryder. It's the weakest lead character of any Bioware game. I blame that on the absence of Paragon/Renegade options that doesn't even allow for a snide comeback if your character is outright insulted.

The ugly: Lose quest threads. I don't know what the developers had in mind when the most interesting side quests just lead to nowheren. Specifically the mysterious benefactor and the Garsson murder leave you hanging out to dry. Maybe they planned on producing DLCs to resolve these issues. But we're not getting any, so there's absolutely no incentive for a replay, fully knowing that you won't resolve most of the mysteries.

In short, buy if you're into some shooter action with added puzzles and repetitive environments. Steer clear, if you expect RPG content.

Now the developer proves that they are much less responsible than the No Man's Sky team. They have given up further effort on fixing this mess and this is probably the most thing I am unhappy with.

I personally find that Gameplay and Plot are more important parts of a game than animations - but it would seem a lot of people intensely disagree with that opinion.

    ___________________________________________________________________________
I'll be honest, there seems to be several issues in how this game is rated by its audience.

The first is a fairly common mistake (imo), which is that the game isn't rated on its own virtue, or rated against an industry standard. Instead it's measured against a trilogy that launched a decade ago, and that a lot of us grew up with. The second part, and judged from some of the things I've come across on different sites, seem to point out that people were set on hating the game and being disappointed by it, before it ever launched.I think it's a legacy of ME3's ending, which has tainted this launch.

Is it an inferior game compared to the original trilogy? Aspects of it are, for sure. But it gets a lot right too. Gone are the cramped pre-fab structures of the original trilogy, and the addition of the jump pack/biotic jump + evade adds a lot to the dynamics of the gameplay, and the pace as well.

I found the various locations more visually stimulating than either the original ME games, but also far better than the mess that was DAI. They weren't perfect, but they were at least on par with the original trilogy as far as I'm concerned.

Right, so the setting and the gameplay are at the very least wholly acceptable. So what about companions and plot/missions?

Companions will always be a subject of intense debate -as it should be. I suspect that half the player-base absolutely hates Peebee (justified or not) while the other half probably loves her. This is as it always will be, and isn't a lick different from any of the companions in the original trilogy. Some characters are pretty dull, some feel a bit forced, and others are pretty cool. In this case, I'd say they got more right than not, though I'd note that Bioware have far more issues with human characters than they do aliens (though perhaps disregarding Jack).

    Plot and missions? Right.
Most of the game will be spent on different planets doing sidequests. As with most games, some of these are good, and others bad (no Witcher 3 here I'm afraid). Primarily the issue isn't an abundance of boring sidequests, as much as it's the amount of times you have to fly back to the same planet because of a quest update. Too much time spent in flying animations to the same damn places.

The main plot is fairly decent though. The Kett are however a tad more generic than I'd wish for. Think the alien invaders in The Avengers, just with the ability to speak.. well, sorta.

So, we come to the last part, and the one that's been hyped unreasonably so. Or maybe not unreasonably so, but one that has a far larger impact on user scores than makes sense. The animations. First of all, I'm not going to address general bugs, as they judging from a ton of other games, don't really impact scores (basically any game made by Bethesda). There are however distinct issues with animations, character creation and recycling of character assets.

Animations range from fine to terrible. I ended up deleting my custom male character after the first conversation, because the facial animations were absolutely terrible. This was made better by using the pre-made male Ryder. The fact that the default male Ryder works decently, does not however, in any way forgive the terrible animations of custom characters but also other parts of the cast in the game. Facial animations aren't the only issues though, and movement and body language in conversations and cut-scenes also leave much to be desired. One would assume in this time and age, that a triple A studio could afford some decent mocap for both facial features and body (I don't recall it being as bad in DAI, though it was pretty damn wooden in the original ME trilogy).

And then there's the recycling of assets. No excuse here, that's just plain lazy and frankly disrespectful. It's not even that they're trying to hide it. There are multiple scenes were a crowd of characters all wearing the same damn face are in plain view. It's insulting.

The reason for my rating is fairly simple. If the animations and recycling of character assets were fixed, I'd give it an even "8" or hell maybe even an "8.5" if that was a thing. But the animations and recycling kills a bit of the immersion that seem to be Bioware's aim in most of it's game.

This game is having a polarizing effect on gamers. The the Mass Effect Trilogy is my all-time favorite game(s) and I am playing on Xbox which I've heard has less performance glitches than the PS4.

Mass Effect: Andromeda has attempted to do something fantastic: take all the great things about Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3 and put them into an open world environment (a la Dragon Age Inquisition) and then put the whole thing in a new galaxy in order to give the most freedom possible to tell their own story. That's a pretty tall order, I personally am very happy with what I have uncovered in about 30 hours of gaming so far. The tutorial mission was fun, it is taking some time to get use to the new combat engine but I find the more I learn the cooler it is. I've not seen any animations so bad they pull me out of the game and either I'm okay with the supposed poor level of writing some people mention or my choices have been such that it all sounds pretty good for what I was expecting.

This game has so much to do, and it all comes at you pretty quick once you're out of the first act. As I started getting new location after new location and quest after quest, it started becoming hard to focus. Then I realized that this would make replays absolutely fantastic. With ME2 I always wished I could get certain team members in a different order - ME:A does its best to give you the entire ocean as soon as it can. In the end I would say this game is taking a lot from the mechanics of Dragon Age Inquisition and using it here - and since I really enjoyed DA:I this works really well for me.
    Specifics:
Better Mako - the Nomad is a ton of fun on the open world maps. Once you get the hang of it this vehicle definetly takes me back to cruising along barren planets in ME1 looking for things to scan and do. They fixed the turret problem by removing it all together however as ME:A isn't a military game (It's more like NASA or ISS) this makes sense in the lore.
Better system exploration - In ME1 we had just a map to play with, by ME3 we had a little ship we flew around, in ME:A you sit on the bridge of the Tempest and feel your looking out into space and directing the ship as you go. It's a very cool feeling if you have a large TV.
Better combat - The combat system I think works great once you figure out how to use it. I started playing like it was good 'ol ME and quickly would get flanked, shot from all directions, or had a strong enemy just overrun my position. Then I learned that while cover is still critical, mobility is now way more important. Dashing and jumping around the 3 dimensional battlefields becomes a blast, and there are a lot more opportunities to use combos or the environment to great advantage.
    Guns/Armor/Crafting – It’s a variant of DA:I, which I liked, however you may not.
Story – So this comes down to the idea of linear play through vs open world. ME really was a linear game where you could choose how you did the middle section. A then B was set but C, D, E, and F were in any order you wanted, with G and H being locked in as well. With ME:A it feels they now give you C-X to do in whatever order you want, which may make the game feel cluttered or unfocused.
Mass Effect Andromeda is a game that’s trying to give us a vast open frontier. From exploring new systems to colonizing new planets, from the bureaucracy of a developing government to the down and dirty struggle for survival and pirate attacks, I feel Bioware has hit on every task or expectation. But this is a huge undertaking and some of those things do end up becoming a bit shallow (first encounter – cough – cough). However I believe my main enjoyment for this game comes from the fact that I really liked Dragon Age Inquisition from which quite a few of the open world mechanisms or strategies were evolved, and the fact that this game is a spiritual sequel for Mass Effect 3 – it is NOT a sequel to the entire trilogy. You compare this one game to the entire trilogy and you will very quickly be disappointed. The connection I made to Ashley or Tali over 3 games will blow away what Cora or Peebee can do for me simply because they only have one game to do it.
Mass Effect Trilogy was three games about saving the galaxy while making lasting relationships and hard choices. Mass Effect Andromeda is the 1st third of a game about being an explorer and dealing with all the realities of surviving in a new galaxy as a civilian agency while making lasting relationships and hard choices. Those are two very different plots and you can easily love the first trilogy and not this new game without trying to argue the non-mass-effect-ivy-ness of it all.

Impressions at E3 was terrible and told us that the game is ready or not, or the writers are afraid to show their product. The gameplay videos were beautiful, but strange. Also all appreciated the terrible animation of a female character. But hope was. I spent 50 hours to beat the game and play in multiplayer. This is not Mass Effect.

A feeling. many. who participated in the development of didn't care about the game. Advertising company again littered thanks to EA, the facial animation is bad (not terrible, but worse than in the same Wicher 3), the story is frankly weak. The only people who were good at your work it's artists. The scenery in the game are forced to admire him, all the planets are incredibly beautiful. Even painted and modeled space! This is the most beautiful space in games! The game looks gorgeous, but we love Mass Effect not for the graphics. Overall, the animation is normal. A nomad, nice to handle, he even slips on the ice. When you walk character, as in real life, to go around the different pits, crossing from ledge to ledge. Facial animation is bad, but don't destroy the game just because of her! It's a massive RPG, not cartoon. You need to enjoy the process of history. not the facial animation.

The main plot is very weak, and does not tolerate any criticism. The plot is like a fanfic. I don't believe that it was written by a screenwriter completed. A few hours, the plot is intriguing, but that intrigue quickly subsides, and we see a weak, predictable and cliched plot. The main enemy Arkhon is absolutely not interesting. And it looks .as if escaped from the movie Gremlins (are you kidding me?!). Kett - another humanoid, and not much interesting. Just the enemies. We were shown a new race - Angara. again, they are humanoids (the writers without imagination), though looks beautiful, especially the eyes. History and lore of the race Angara is very interesting. A new race is fully opened, which is good news. We also have a new extinct race - Remnants. The writers absolutely not revealed the lore of this race. Remember what interesting was the Protheans in the first Mass Effect? Remnants appear to be a robot, although Remnants - it's not the robots, just the writers not come up with that is this race.

But! It turns out that in Mass Effect: Andromeda main plot is just nothing. The most interesting tasks we give our team, and you can still find interesting job on the planets (although it is mainly sad scan). The developers have done everything that we fell in love with their team. And if you passed the game completely, and not stupidly ran the story, then you love them. Each member of our team is not just a puppet, and interesting character. Someone more interesting, someone less, but you are sure to find their favorites. Job they give are interesting, and sometimes with new gameplay mechanics. Make sure to do the job mates! It's the best thing in the game. The sex scenes also have - they are no better and no worse than in Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Multiplayer since Mass Effect 3 has not changed, which is probably good. The only thing that has changed is the combat system. And this makes a pleasant change to the gameplay. We run across the map, applied skills, and great strafe. Many people do not like the new combat system, but I thought it was very successful. We have three games sitting behind cover and shoot is boring. Now we can jump high, hover in the air, strafe. The dynamics of the battle has grown significantly. Also in a single company will allow us to combine classes. this is another nice gameplay innovation. Now you can be not only biotic, but also an engineer. Another gameplay mechanic scan. It's boring and not interesting. Don't do it. Many criticized the game due to scanning, so don't do it, it did not occur? In this game, a weak soundtrack, and most importantly - in the game it's almost unheard of, this is a huge minus. If you listen to him separately, like it is good, especially the song that plays in menu, but in game you music almost never awake to hear.

Mass Effect: Andromeda is not a continuation of the legendary series. we wanted to see. Weak dialogue (though certainly not all, there are very great), terrible plot (Mass Effect) ,and animation cause irreparable damage to Mass Effect. And if the animation can be corrected with patches, the story will remain a third-rate fanfic. despite this Mass Effect does not deserve such low ratings, it has many good features: quests of the characters, some third-party tasks, your team, the gameplay, the beauty of the planets. Give this game a chance, don't rush, explore the world, find interesting tasks (do not do a dull scan), and you will not notice how will these 50 hours. Mass Effect: Andromeda's not trash, just weak game - and this is the worst for this legendary series of games.

    - Decent story.

    - Animations aren't up to scratch (think everyone knows this by now. Personally haven't run into to many of these issues). Playing on Ps4.

    - The new dialogue system is adequate but doesn't quite live up to paragon/renegade. E.I, less opportunities to chances to interrupt people with RT/LT. Ryder seems to just always be paragon, Dialogue doesn't give much leeway for 'renegade' decisions.

    - Dialogue is a bit ropey but I seemed to get use to it.

    - Romances/relationships are **** (Due once in part to the writing methinks).

    - Multiplayer micro-transactions are an irritant, but don't seem to infringe to much. You usually only have to play one or two games to get higher level crates. (Things where you get weapons/characters etc).

Overall I would recommend the latest Mass Effect. While not on par with the previous trilogy its quite fun and does have good qualities. But yeah, I think anything below a 5 is slightly unreasonable.

From reading many of the early reviews I was afraid that I would regret my pre-order but I am enjoying the game just fine and feel that my pre-order was not a mistake. To me the game is a mixed bag of things I miss from the original series (mainly the combat controls of my team) to the new additions I enjoy...well ok, the jump jetpack is really fun and that's about it.

    The awful

The awful animations just make me chuckle and mostly I just ignore them. It's a shame that the game's animations look worse than the original Mass Effect game that came out 10 years ago. Shame on Bioware. To me the one thing that makes or breaks this game is the boss battles. Which style of boss battle do you enjoy? Witcher III style (learn how to properly equip your character and conduct the fight then prepare to mash the same controls over and over for 15-20 minutes to win the fight and if you make a mistake at any point and die start all over from the beginning) or Fallout 4 style (learn what weapon options you have and use the right one and it's over in 30 seconds or less)?? The design decision to make the boss battles long drawn out repetitious affairs will result in my uninstalling the game like I did with Witcher III and never playing it again.

Bioware did a nice job with the different planets and the game looks really nice and everything seems fine with the gameplay as I have basically had no issues with it. The writing is not as bad as most people seem to think. It's ok, not outstanding by a long shot but not awful either. If you enjoyed playing the original series I think you will enjoy this game just fine even at the current $60 price if you can get past the long drawn out boss battles.

Postcard-pretty landscapes is pretty much all that there is good about Andromeda. They serve as backdrops for a boring, cliche-ridden, somewhat demented story with forgettable characters and even more forgettable missions.

Enough of the classic Mass Effect, with enough new mechanics to keep the game fresh. [Hollingworth; Issue#261, p.55]

An earnest attempt has been made to create a new identity for a series here, but the question of how to best frame Mass Effect's narrative strengths is, once again, left open. [June 2017, p.90]
