For me, the game is full of highs and lows. I liked the story and the super heroes, but The Hunter was rather flat. The abilities are fun to watch but the combat is rather repetitive.

Got this on sale recently and so far I'm feeling very meh. I'm one of the few people in the world that had issues with X-Com 2 and how the devs seemed to be trying to ruin any strategy or tactics you try and use. (for example: a squaddie can hide behind a boulder for cover and an alien destroys that boulder; or on turn 2 aliens mind control half of your squad so instead of a 4v8 it is now a 2v10; or how when you 'discover' aliens in the fog of water they get a free move to cover) Some of that is evident here. Like how every turn enemy reinforcements enter the map and position themselves exactly where they can be the most annoying as a free move. And sometimes an enemy boss will spawn instead, dragging the mission out much longer than expected. Timed missions are back too that annoyed the crap out of me from X2.
For a game with graphics no better than X-Com2 from 7 years ago, it is a real resource hog. My PC runs hot and I have to turn down the graphics. Weird because I played something like Assassin's Creed Valhalla on 4k high settings with no problems. Some of the character models are dated and goofy. I'm looking at you thicc Captain Marvel.
The gameplay itself is ok. Not a huge fan of the card mechanic but there are some great animations when you pull off a cool attack.
Environmental damage is pretty standard and gives a small damage boost but uses up your card energy.
What's weird is that I had more fun exploring the map freely than playing the card combat.
I guess, at the moment, I'm just feeling very underwhelmed by the whole experience. Maybe it'll improve with more gameplay and I'll come back and re-review if it does.

The worst part in my opinion is the micro transactions. When are we gonna start holding game developers accountable for this nonsense? The game released with enough micro transactions available to cost more than the game. The DLC characters are unfortunate too. You’ll spend hundreds to get everything you want in this game with the total value still being about 40-60 which is already what you’re gonna pay for the base game. Let’s come together and do our part to stop this and stop letting reasonably good gameplay completely excuse this behavior so we can start receiving full games again Expand

I worry about Firaxis. X-COM 2 and Wrath of the Chosen were Firaxis hitting their stride. Good gameplay, a solid game design, tons of modability and customization, and just...fun. That's the easiest way to say it: X-COM 2 and WotC is just a fun game and expansion....But with the success of the Civilization series, I sensed Firaxis' parent company, 2K Games has been working to destroy what made Firaxis great. And no better proof of that exists, than Marvel's Midnight Suns.

At its core, Midnight Suns **is** a Firaxis game. There is a nice loosening of the turn-based formula that Firaxis worked well on, and most of the characters are at least graphically faithful to their origins. But, it's pretty clear that 2K is playing Dr. Frankenstein behind the scenes. An unusable microtransaction shop(for now), and a plethora of grind mechanics make the game feel stodgy and slow from the level of a strategic overview. You run around a hub area, to open boxes, to collect random skins and blueprints, to unlock for characters so you can pick them....this was done in X-COM 2 by just going to the customization tab and PICKING options. You have meetings and group chats and one on one conversations that do nothing but make a number more numbery....this was done in X-COM 2: Wrath of the Chosen by deciding which of them you'd face, when and how, and fighting to keep them from getting overpowered. And you collect resources to research upgrades that have to progress one at a time between every fight you have. This was done in X-COM 2 by being able to research multiple options, at the same time, and progressing the world clock, letting you decide IF you wanted to engage in a fight, or take the loss and come into the next fight with stronger squaddies. Nothing done here, was done better HERE than in past Firaxis games. Simply add a subject to "The ______ is/are not as good as other Firaxis games." and you have my view: Gameplay? Not as good. Graphics? Not as good. Theme? Not as good. Characters? Setting? Customization, Sound, Mechanics

It's fairly clear this game was mandated by 2K Games, not created by Firaxis Games. There's a lot of genuinely good gameplay here...when it's allowed to do so. But those moments come few and far between, with all the layering 2K obligated the game to have. It's not Marvel's Avengers, I will give 2K that marginal level of credit. But it's a far cry from Marvel characters in a Firaxis gameplay setting.

If you are a fan of Firaxis games, and cling to the hope that this game doing well regains them some independence, I'd say pick it up. If you're a Marvel fan who sleeps in Iron Man PJ's, with a Thor bedsheet and walls plastered with post-2000 Marvel movie posters, this is the game for you. But if you're a strategy fan, who enjoys the tactical feel of Firaxis games....this is not the game you're looking for.

Firaxis does not do great story lines and dialog - its well knows and that same flaw is present here , what they do is make incredible deep, tactical, thoughtful games with a ton of replayabllity that make up for it with the game play being the draw. If asked to replay this game id consider it cruel and unusual punishment . The core of the game the combat and card system is decent but feels like something that could of been done on a mobile game . The problem is the game play is only about half the game - the rest is an RPG which bad dialog and options to build relations , walking around a pointless hub to collect things that should be story mission rewards. ITs like they saw open world stuff from Witcher or Zero dawn and like lets cram that into one big hub. Its got a ton of needless required time syncs that slow the game down and are dull and tedious making replaying a choir .

I can appreciate the RPG elements but they feel half effort both in growth and development in leveling system and in the Dialog and relationship building part. , I can appreciate a world where you explore and build and craft but it just doesnt have a place in a game like this and also feels half assed and just thrown in the for the sake of adding something else.

I knew not to expect Marvel's Xcom. But i was hoping for something more then this.
My feel is its a low grade mobile game with increased graphics that somehow runs poorly on the highest of high end builds . I mean i know my 3080 isnt considered super high end anymore but i should not have stuttering and lock ups on MEDIUM settings on one of the highest end cards of the past few years!
The grinding for for cosmetics with optional microtransaction in a single player game with limited end game and limited replayability ??? What have you become Firaxis???

I have over 1000 each on both Xcoms and probably close to that combined on the civ games.

Starts off fun, but quickly starts to feel like you have a second job. It’s essentially an iPad game for console, and not in a good way. So much dialogue that doesn’t matter, mindless tasks that lead to nothing, and you can’t even pause the game if you need to use the bathroom during all the chatter, so you just end up skipping the scene.

The combat is ok, but you kinda stick to the same 4-5 characters that are good while everyone else just kinda hangs out. It sucks when a mission makes you bring a crap character along. Overall, the game is both boring and tiring. It had so much potential.

Unfortunately, a very weak game. The game mechanics become boring after an hour, as do the dialogues.

I have the feeling that Firaxis wanted to jump on the Marvel bandwagon here.... The story is okay, but nothing more.

For a turn-based game, I would have expected more.

Game stutters in new areas or every time a new animation plays out on my 3080 Ti / Ryzen 9 so can't really recommend right now......

but.......underneath the stutter which I've now accepted as just DLC for all games released this year, there is a good game with addictive combat and will probably be a pretty decent Marvel game.

Not unplayable, thanks to turn-based nature of game, but really annoying. This issue affects only PC version so either play on console or wait for a fix.

Dialogs and all other "social interactions" between missions - total facepalm. Just skip. The worst written character personalities and interactions ever (not only in Marvels history, but ever!)

Overall: 5/10 - wait for 40-50% discount as 1/2 of the game is total trash that should not be there at all and then enjoy great part of this game which is really good!

Be warned, this isn NOT XCOM with Marvel Characters, which is what I wanted. I'm just disappointed because it's much less intriguing of a format than XCOM with Marvel Characters. Really I just wanted a re-skined Chimera Squad and i would have been happy, which I think is what everyone kinda thought it would be. Worth playing, but it's NOT XCOM. It's a card team battler with very minor positioning mechanics.

Edit: Unfortunately, after playing through the full game, I can't recommend this. The lackluster writing only becomes more apparent as you go through the story. The endless accolades and exclamations that you're the best friend anyone has ever had ever get very old. The combat is fun initially, but toward the second half of the game just dragged on. I started playing at the highest difficulty settings (raising it each time they unlocked), which was minorly challenging, but dropped it down to the easiest at the end just to finish the game. A real disappointment. It started okay and literally went nowhere, but it took ages to get nowhere, too.

In spite of its technical issues, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is an easy recommendation to strategy and superhero fans or anyone who’s been missing the more traditional BioWare experience. Its tactical combat stands out in the genre and is consistently compelling. The plot is no great shakes but the characters are excellent renditions of decades-old favorites. It’s also a well-paced game, never getting bogged down in any one form of play for too long but free-form enough to allow for players to do that if they wish. Not only is Midnight Suns a great Marvel game, it’s a great game in its own right.

While I wasn’t really sold on Marvel’s Midnight Suns pre-release, it has continued to impress me more as I played through the story, and it is chock full of a ton of optional content that will keep you busy for a very long time. It wasn’t a great experience around launch on PC, but Marvel’s Midnight Suns is well worth your time right now, and a joy to play on Steam Deck. It already felt like a perfect fit for Steam Deck from the start, and it has finally been fixed for Valve’s portable system with a recent update.
