Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a tactical RPG made by the creators of XCOM; however, it is radically different from most TRPGs. Instead of being based on grid based movement and initiative order, the player and the enemy take turns as teams. You control three heroes, but instead of them having a preset set of actions they can each take each turn, you instead have a deck of 8 cards for each character, shuffled into a deck of 24 cards (plus one “combo attack” card, for a total of 25 cards), which you draw a hand of 6 cards each turn.

You have three actions per turn, which means three card plays, but because some cards allow you to sometimes (or always) take an extra action, you may end up playing significantly more than three cards per turn. You can redraw up to two cards per turn, allowing you to sculpt your hand a little, and you keep extra cards from turn to turn. Some cards will draw you extra cards, while others will cause you to discard other cards from your hand.

The game has a surprisingly large emphasis on spacing, even though most attacks simply move you automatically to your target. The main reason is the many knockback attacks in the game, which allow you to knock enemies into other enemies, causing them damage, or knock them into environmental hazards, damaging them or even killing them if you knock them into pits.

There are various fairly simple status ailments, buffs and debuffs that increase or decrease damage or stun an enemy or ally, or which otherwise alter the mechanics slightly, like being cursed, which causes you to discard a card when you use a card with that hero.

All in all, it makes for an interesting strategy game… at least, for a little while.

The problem is, the game not only runs out of steam, but it also puts a lot of barriers between you and that strategy game.

The first, and largest problem is the Abbey grounds – a small area around a central “Abbey” where your characters reside. This is unlocked metroidvania style, and contains tidbits about the characters and the world, as well as crafting ingredients which respawn and chests that periodically respawn that contain both expendable battle items and cosmetic items. It’s boring, it looks terrible, and it doesn’t add anything to the game – but you are going to spend many hours out there both unlocking the various areas and trying to gather ingredients for crafting items that are used to upgrade your cards and make consumable battle items that make you stronger in battle.

This is really tedious and feels completely pointless and tacked on. There’s nothing about it that really enhances or even ties into the rest of the game very much… until you get to the VERY end, at which point it becomes lore-relevant. But even still, you only get very limited information, and it isn’t particularly interesting – there were better ways of doing this, but they just decided to do this probably because of Fire Emblem Three Houses, which did the same thing and was also tedious for this reason.

The second thing is between-combat banter and hangouts. This is less tedious, but there is a huge amount of it. The writing is, honestly, fine – it’s actually nice seeing the characters develop, and they have reasonably good characterization. That being said, while this is way better than what Fire Emblem Three Houses did, there’s a huge amount of between-combat dialogue, and it is often not very well paced. It feels like more traditional cutscenes could have transmitted this information, and in a faster, more natural way that would have been more fluid and less tedious.

Moreover, I’m wondering if this could have been delivered better – it could often take an hour or more between battles between searching the Abby grounds for ingredients and the between-combat banter and hangouts with characters. This is on top of the time you spend looking at the item drops you got – not to mention the fact that actually getting the item drops requires you to go to three different areas in the Abbey to unlock abilities, unlock intel missions, and unlock training and card upgrades, all three of which have to be visited between almost every mission.

The game, thus, spends a huge amount of time on non-TRPG aspects, to the point where I’m quite certain I spent more time between missions than actually on missions. This gets a bit better at the end of the game, when ingredients stop respawning and you’ve unlocked the whole abbey, but it is still tedious.

Worse, the actual TRPG aspect ends up getting dull. The game has 20-odd main story missions, but you have to do general missions between them, so you’re likely to do 50+ missions over the course of a playthrough. The thing is, the game has very limited enemy variety – there’s really only two “opposition forces”, they often are mixed together, and you basically stop getting introduced to new enemies in act 2 of the game.

For me, the game is full of highs and lows. I liked the story and the super heroes, but The Hunter was rather flat. The abilities are fun to watch but the combat is rather repetitive.

(for example: a squaddie can hide behind a boulder for cover and an alien destroys that boulder; or on turn 2 aliens mind control half of your squad so instead of a 4v8 it is now a 2v10; or how when you 'discover' aliens in the fog of water they get a free move to cover) Some of that is evident here. Like how every turn enemy reinforcements enter the map and position themselves exactly where they can be the most annoying as a free move. And sometimes an enemy boss will spawn instead, dragging the mission out much longer than expected. Timed missions are back too that annoyed the crap out of me from X2.
For a game with graphics no better than X-Com2 from 7 years ago, it is a real resource hog. My PC runs hot and I have to turn down the graphics. Weird because I played something like Assassin's Creed Valhalla on 4k high settings with no problems. Some of the character models are dated and goofy. I'm looking at you thicc Captain Marvel.
The gameplay itself is ok. Not a huge fan of the card mechanic but there are some great animations when you pull off a cool attack.
Environmental damage is pretty standard and gives a small damage boost but uses up your card energy.
What's weird is that I had more fun exploring the map freely than playing the card combat.
I guess, at the moment, I'm just feeling very underwhelmed by the whole experience. Maybe it'll improve with more gameplay and I'll come back and re-review if it does.

Not only are there attack cards, but there are buff and debuff cards, etc. This combat mechanic will be different enough to be interesting for those (like me) who are used to the typical grid-based tactical battles.

There aren't as many AAA production value story-rich tactical RPGS, especially comedic, so all things considered this game has impressed me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Marvel fans and game fans alike should check this game out. When this was first announced, I was really excited, until I learned it would be like XCom and have a card based turn system. Luckily enough, I beat "The Devil In Me" in like two days and really needed something / ANYTHING to hold me over until Hogwarts Legacy. Saw this game, thought, you know what, I love all these characters. So I gave it a shot. I can't recommend this game enough if you are a Marvel fan, comics fan, or fans of the superhero genre in any form. The card base system actually works great and opening new cards throughout the game that offer truly awesome power animatics and showoffs. What I truly enjoyed was the dedication Firaxis spent in making every heroes power true to their actual comic canon power and the storylines each character has can easily feel they are pulled from the Marvel comics themselves. I highly recommend for story, gameplay, graphics, and action! Expand

If your a fan of tactical games or the marvel universe (or in my case, both) then please do check out this game, the developers clearly care a lot about the mythos and lore behind these characters and have woven a story with a lot of depth in terms of character and story narrative.

The worst part in my opinion is the micro transactions. When are we gonna start holding game developers accountable for this nonsense? The game released with enough micro transactions available to cost more than the game. The DLC characters are unfortunate too. You’ll spend hundreds to get everything you want in this game with the total value still being about 40-60 which is already what you’re gonna pay for the base game. That's the easiest way to say it: X-COM 2 and WotC is just a fun game and expansion....But with the success of the Civilization series, I sensed Firaxis' parent company, 2K Games has been working to destroy what made Firaxis great. And no better proof of that exists, than Marvel's Midnight Suns.

At its core, Midnight Suns **is** a Firaxis game. There is a nice loosening of the turn-based formula that Firaxis worked well on, and most of the characters are at least graphically faithful to their origins. But, it's pretty clear that 2K is playing Dr. Frankenstein behind the scenes. An unusable microtransaction shop(for now), and a plethora of grind mechanics make the game feel stodgy and slow from the level of a strategic overview. You run around a hub area, to open boxes, to collect random skins and blueprints, to unlock for characters so you can pick them....this was done in X-COM 2 by just going to the customization tab and PICKING options. You have meetings and group chats and one on one conversations that do nothing but make a number more numbery....this was done in X-COM 2: Wrath of the Chosen by deciding which of them you'd face, when and how, and fighting to keep them from getting overpowered. And you collect resources to research upgrades that have to progress one at a time between every fight you have. This was done in X-COM 2 by being able to research multiple options, at the same time, and progressing the world clock, letting you decide IF you wanted to engage in a fight, or take the loss and come into the next fight with stronger squaddies. Nothing done here, was done better HERE than in past Firaxis games. Simply add a subject to "The ______ is/are not as good as other Firaxis games." and you have my view: Gameplay? Not as good. Graphics? Not as good. Theme? Not as good. Characters? Setting? Customization, Sound, Mechanics

It's fairly clear this game was mandated by 2K Games, not created by Firaxis Games. There's a lot of genuinely good gameplay here...when it's allowed to do so. But those moments come few and far between, with all the layering 2K obligated the game to have. It's not Marvel's Avengers, I will give 2K that marginal level of credit. But it's a far cry from Marvel characters in a Firaxis gameplay setting.

If you are a fan of Firaxis games, and cling to the hope that this game doing well regains them some independence, I'd say pick it up. If you're a Marvel fan who sleeps in Iron Man PJ's, with a Thor bedsheet and walls plastered with post-2000 Marvel movie posters, this is the game for you. But if you're a strategy fan, who enjoys the tactical feel of Firaxis games....this is not the game you're looking for.

The game plays like a mobile game, there is almost zero freedom, no moving on the battlefield which is about 50 feet across. I'd be lying if I said there is no fun in the encounters, that's why it is a 4 and not a zero.

The game is saddled with a completely unnecessary TPS RPG intermission after each encounter. Where you must befriend poorly written, annoying heroes, to upgrade their abilities. It is a chore, not fun at all. You can also spend money on upgrading your Room in for all intents and purposes is a college dorm, filled with self entitled narcissistic brats. And you must tiptoe around them be afraid of saying the wrong thing and offending them, or you instantly loose friendship points.

The freaking game even has a built in version of twitter. I wish I was joking.

    The good:
    - The encounters themselves can be enjoyable if you don't mind the mobile game like premise
    - The card based RNG system is still more fair than XCOM's 90% chance to hit missed shots.

    The bad:
    - Atrociously bad writing (just like chimera squad was) most of the dialogue is pure cringe
    - Saddled with the TPS friendship simulator with built in twitter

Firaxis does not do great story lines and dialog - its well knows and that same flaw is present here , what they do is make incredible deep, tactical, thoughtful games with a ton of replayabllity that make up for it with the game play being the draw. If asked to replay this game id consider it cruel and unusual punishment . The core of the game the combat and card system is decent but feels like something that could of been done on a mobile game . The problem is the game play is only about half the game - the rest is an RPG which bad dialog and options to build relations , walking around a pointless hub to collect things that should be story mission rewards. ITs like they saw open world stuff from Witcher or Zero dawn and like lets cram that into one big hub. Its got a ton of needless required time syncs that slow the game down and are dull and tedious making replaying a choir .

I can appreciate the RPG elements but they feel half effort both in growth and development in leveling system and in the Dialog and relationship building part. , I can appreciate a world where you explore and build and craft but it just doesnt have a place in a game like this and also feels half assed and just thrown in the for the sake of adding something else.

I knew not to expect Marvel's Xcom. But i was hoping for something more then this.
My feel is its a low grade mobile game with increased graphics that somehow runs poorly on the highest of high end builds . I mean i know my 3080 isnt considered super high end anymore but i should not have stuttering and lock ups on MEDIUM settings on one of the highest end cards of the past few years!
The grinding for for cosmetics with optional microtransaction in a single player game with limited end game and limited replayability ??? What have you become Firaxis???

I have over 1000 each on both Xcoms and probably close to that combined on the civ games.

    - Tactical gameplay is reasonably interesting, but not spectacular.
    - Strategic / story gameplay isn't like X-com in terms of selecting upgrades etc. but a full blown story mode. No way I've found to accelerate the many, many, many conversations that happen between missions beyond skipping them entirely, so you can't just quickly read the summary and are forced to listen to non-compelling dialog by medium voice actors, plus a lot of walking around. A LOT of walking around.
    - The controls show this to be a bad counsel port poorly adapted to PC (unlike X-COM, which had controls that worked on PC and even the IPAD version worked well.)
    - One dumb thing: Default for going forward and dashing is left shift - W and use A or D for changing direction, making it require a lot more manual dexterity for something that is just going from point a to point B. So most users will want to go in and extensively adjust the controls.
    - Some functions you have to look up - like using the SPACEBAR to use a special word, which doesn't show up clearly when you need it. (I googled it, because it was faster than the in game menus, which are slow like everything else.
    - LOAD TIMES OMMFG. You need to have something to entertain you while this thing loads, like a Dostoyevsky novel. Not sure if this is part of the bad console port problem or what, but together with all the walking and talking it makes the game intolerable.

I sincerely regret buying this game, $60 I won't see again for a game I'm not planning on playing again unless the load times and at least a solid amount of the other issues are resolved.

The time between battles is spent choosing what you'd like to do in your home base. Redecorate your room with furniture you just bought, hang out with and watch a movie with Wolverine, tweak your cards to create synergies between party members, or explore the open world for hidden treasures and secrets.

Both sides of this game are fun to me.

The story is very strong (for a card battler), and is funny. I really don't get the people berating the story. Me and my housemate have laughed out loud plenty of times. If you have a sarcastic or snarky sense of humor and enjoy wordplay and throwbacks, you'll get what I'm saying. I could honestly gush some more, but I'll try to simplify things..

Do you remember that feeling you got when you saw the first Gamescon trailer for this game and said "Oh wow, this game looks so cool!" Yeah, this game lives up to that. (So far)

I'll edit my review if that changes.

Edit January 1st, 2022: I am in love with this game. It absolutely takes the top place in my favorite games list (beating out FF7 and the remake), and I'm eagerly awaiting DLCs. Hoping for years of content to come, because I was genuinely sad/depressed when the game ended because I wanted to spend more time with the characters. Unfortunately, a very weak game. The game mechanics become boring after an hour, as do the dialogues.

I have the feeling that Firaxis wanted to jump on the Marvel bandwagon here.... The story is okay, but nothing more.

For a turn-based game, I would have expected more.

Game stutters in new areas or every time a new animation plays out on my 3080 Ti / Ryzen 9 so can't really recommend right now......

but.......underneath the stutter which I've now accepted as just DLC for all games released this year, there is a good game with addictive combat and will probably be a pretty decent Marvel game.

Not unplayable, thanks to turn-based nature of game, but really annoying. This issue affects only PC version so either play on console or wait for a fix.

Dialogs and all other "social interactions" between missions - total facepalm. Just skip. The worst written character personalities and interactions ever (not only in Marvels history, but ever!)

Overall: 5/10 - wait for 40-50% discount as 1/2 of the game is total trash that should not be there at all and then enjoy great part of this game which is really good!

I really like the card play but the downtime between the encounters (i.e. card play) is too large. The convoluted dialoge, navigation and overall interaction (e.g. different buttons used for interacting with the environment)) is annoying. Paired with the lackluster visuals and lack of modding options make this title a disappointment.

Not the game I was expecting. More relationship building than turn based strategy. Hunting for mushrooms to make potions in a tbs, really? The final kicker was putting all the cool outfits behind a 100 dollar paywall. Bad form Firaxis, Take 2 has shown who is in charge.

I'm just disappointed because it's much less intriguing of a format than XCOM with Marvel Characters. Really I just wanted a re-skined Chimera Squad and i would have been happy, which I think is what everyone kinda thought it would be. Worth playing, but it's NOT XCOM. It's a card team battler with very minor positioning mechanics.

Edit: Unfortunately, after playing through the full game, I can't recommend this. The lackluster writing only becomes more apparent as you go through the story. The endless accolades and exclamations that you're the best friend anyone has ever had ever get very old. The combat is fun initially, but toward the second half of the game just dragged on. I started playing at the highest difficulty settings (raising it each time they unlocked), which was minorly challenging, but dropped it down to the easiest at the end just to finish the game. A real disappointment. It started okay and literally went nowhere, but it took ages to get nowhere, too.

Here, forget the Xcoms and their famous attack success percentage as reliable as a blind man proposed to snipe an elephant in a corridor. In this Marvel's Midnight Sun you will find yourself with a really well-honed card system evolving throughout the adventure to prevent a certain redundancy. Likewise, the fights are really very pleasant to play. All heroes have their own very successful animations. We never feel a “copy-pasted” side from one character to another.

To improve your decks of cards you will have to spend a lot of time in the abbey (hub of the game) and its surroundings. This is far from being a defect because you will really take pleasure in discovering all the characters and creating more or less intimate links with them. Personally, I thought the hub would stop at the abbey but not at all!!! Outside you will have a lot of mystical places to discover. To discover them, you will not have to hesitate to be curious and to be quite attentive to certain environments.

I would still have a lot to say but I prefer to let you discover the game so that you keep a few surprises.

Yes, the game has a lot of technical flaws, that's undeniable (really terrible animations and rendering of faces). Only, some of the criticisms made of the game seem to forget that we are not facing a AAA from Naughty Dog or Santa Monica but facing a game from Firaxis? Do we play an Xcom for its photo realistic characters? No.

I really recommend this title that I find really addictive (in a good way). I hope the game will meet the success it deserves to have a sequel or at least a real narrative DLC !!

What does work flawlessly though, the 2k Spyware Launcher.

    Hands off, no purchase recommendation.

Update after Patch December,10. 25 Gb big.

Now after the patch, 25 GB big! Can the game no longer be played under dx11?!

You set dx11 in the options, restart the game, everything jerks, slideshow in slow motion, even before the first menu and then the game crashes! Started 3 times, same result three times.
Game saves cannot be loaded or are even destroyed. Bugs as far as the eye can see. Missions that cannot be completed, etc.

I paid 54,-€ at Gamesplanet for this software junk.

I am really annoyed. This outrageous 2K launcher does the rest.

    Update: Patch December the 16

Instead of fixing the more than abundant bugs that destroy game saves or make them unloadable, instead of fixing the performance problems that really affect almost EVERYONE, no matter how good their hardware is -

Today, they are applying a patch that allows you to stream via NVIDIA's GeForce NOW service on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

So you can stream their jerky orgy called MMS to get more publicity!

Customers and their criticism are completely ignored. I have never experienced anything like this!

    Update and conclusion:

The story of the game is very straightforward except for side-quests and a few things you can discover along the way, make friends (that don't make sense), why buy the Seasonpass, for example, with more hero skins in a single player game? And what are new heroes for? To have to play the same story again?

Somehow the game is nothing half and nothing whole. It's not a good RPG, and it's not a good strategy game either. It's more like "We sell Marvel fans lots of great colourful skins for good money".

    - No one wants to wander around a stupid hub area collecting random, floating, thingamajigs to combine into a whatchyamacallit that adds up to a nothingmuch. It's packed with time-wasting fluff.

    - The story is a very stilted, derivative, every-hero-cameo with the old end-o-the-World-trope. Feels like this was written by 13 year old for a 13 year old.

    - The best part of the game is the banter - but if everyone's a smart-ass then there's not much contrast there either.

    - The graphics & physics are last gen at best. I am shocked this was made on any Unreal engine.

    - And the cloud saves are busted at launch (with Steam Deck at least.)

Spider-man and Guardians of the Galaxy were amazing. Unfortunately, this belongs in that other pile with Marvel's Avengers.

I very much regret this purchase. Wish I could return on Fanatical.

"It has bad graphics" - First, anyone who puts a heavy weight on graphics just doesn't know what a good game is. Second, it's not nearly as bad as everyone giving low scores is saying. It's passable.

"It's a technical mess" - Personally, I have had very few issues with this game. It could run better, sure. But it gets to the game and I can play it with very little hassle, if at all.

Besides all the super cringey dating sim esc friendship systems and some of the corniest dialogue known to man. The actually strategy systems are pretty fun even though as a fan of the XCOM games I find it pretty shallow.

The gameplay is quite refreshing at first, but the walking parts are boring from the start, the later battles get repetitive, and at some point you just want to see the ending, regardless of whether your character gets stronger or not.

Sometimes I reckon it was more than one random missions between the story ones. Which is really uncesseray in my opinion.

Hands down the best Marvel game to come out since Ultimate Alliance. Don’t let the card aspect of the game put you off. Immediately wanted to replay it when I beat it, but am gonna wait until all the DLC comes out. Bought the legendary edition at launch for full price, and it’s worth every penny. 11/10

It had a little bit of a buggy start, but the most recent patches have it running solid on the steam deck. The Deadpool DLC has been a ton of fun. The game play loop is super addictive and has me perpetually saying ok just one more battle.

Yeah you get your Marvel fix, but this type of niche, gimmicky game isn't enjoyable to me. The turn-based combat just doesn't fit here.

There are a lot of superhero games now, all trying the same thing. Luckily, we finally have a superhero video game that tries something different, Midnight Suns. I liked this game a lot. I liked interacting with the different characters and found it fun to talk with the different superheros. The story and tbh everything else was just fine. Don't really have a lot to say, but that doesn't mean I didn't like this. I liked this a lot and would recommend if you are getting bored of the superhero video game formula. Expand

Canceled Russian localization. Very bad attitude towards the players. I don’t understand why ordinary players suffer.

Love being able to roleplay in games and this hasn't disappointed in that aspect either. I would have preferred to have a bit more freedom in the types of relationships with characters, or how fun it would have been to have multiple endings or branching story depending on your alignment. Regardless, Its fun to play, entertaining with what it offers and tells an enjoyable story. I'm enjoying every moment from this game, and would love to see more from this series and what it has to offer. Expand

Even without the DLC this game was an amazing mixture being Young Adult marvel fiction, and a fascinating card battler. The tactical challenge is giving through the great difficultly settings, which, when you have mastered the current setting automatically suggest for you to go up in difficulty.

Great writing, great story, and I am going to start my 3rd play through with the 4 DLC

This game is a mess. Two major issues – a shallow tactical layer, and a time sink of a strategic layer.

The tactical layer is weak. Positioning is unimportant, abilities are very samey, and there’s very little ability to think tactically because your actions are restricted to a handful of random cards each turn. Draw all support, healing, or defensive abilities? Tough luck. Because

The tactical layer is weak. Positioning is unimportant, abilities are very samey, and there’s very little ability to think tactically because your actions are restricted to a handful of random cards each turn. Draw all support, healing, or defensive abilities? Tough luck.
Because it’s a card battler with three plays a turn, a hero getting KOd doesn’t matter. Losing a soldier in XCOM can easily lead to a squad wipe or at best a much more difficult mission, but here it’s a mild inconvenience.
If this wasn’t bad enough, the cards themselves can be upgraded in a number of ways, but the caliber of the cards does not increase. Instead, early game abilities are by far the most useful, so there’s no incentive at all to unlock or upgrade abilities.

The strategic layer (running around the mansion and hanging out with heroes) is a huge time sink, and nothing matters.
    - Loading times of almost one minute between missions and the strategy layer, even with a SSD.
    - Each “day” in game has THREE separate skippable cutscenes. One for the Hunter to get into bed, one landscape scene, and Hunter getting up.
    - After you get up each day, there’s a number of tedious tasks that don’t matter in the slightest. Go to do research and unlock the previous day’s cards, go to the training area to build friendship with another character, stop by the gift shop to buy presents, stop by C.E.N.T.R.A.L. to do an off-screen hero mission for a pointless reward, and THEN select a mission. These things could have all been done through a simple interface, but you have to run all over the mansion to do these tasks.
    - There’s a lot to do in the strategy layer, but you’ll probably be in the middle of the game or later before you realize none of it matters. Unless you really want to go fishing with Wolverine, or go to a (repeated) book club with Blade.
    - There’s a huge amount of collectibles, but literally none of them matter. Even the mission rewards don’t.

An all around fun experience, the characters are good for the most part, the cutscenes are so drained and boring, the gameplay it’s fun and it puts your strategy to the test.

Discount Price is the best time to grab this game and enjoy the darker side of the Marvel Universe

The fights are very specific, tactical and surprisingly fun and often challenging, even knowing that a fallen hero can be put back on his feet on the spot during a fight and used in the rest of the encounter. [Issue#324]

In spite of its technical issues, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is an easy recommendation to strategy and superhero fans or anyone who’s been missing the more traditional BioWare experience. Its tactical combat stands out in the genre and is consistently compelling. The plot is no great shakes but the characters are excellent renditions of decades-old favorites. It’s also a well-paced game, never getting bogged down in any one form of play for too long but free-form enough to allow for players to do that if they wish. Not only is Midnight Suns a great Marvel game, it’s a great game in its own right.

While I wasn’t really sold on Marvel’s Midnight Suns pre-release, it has continued to impress me more as I played through the story, and it is chock full of a ton of optional content that will keep you busy for a very long time. It wasn’t a great experience around launch on PC, but Marvel’s Midnight Suns is well worth your time right now, and a joy to play on Steam Deck. It already felt like a perfect fit for Steam Deck from the start, and it has finally been fixed for Valve’s portable system with a recent update.
