This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Though I was very hyped about this game, it kind of let me down. Yes it was fun, but there was a few gripes I had that infuriated me. From capping your level at 30 when you’re supposed to be the king Of the ocean and having enemies higher level than you just felt wrong. Yes you had powers (and I’ll get into that more in a few) but that still doesn’t discount not feeling like the king of the ocean as you should. The controls began to hinder the gameplay and without a full lock on mechanic to enemies, it hurt the gameplay. With a few patches they could change this problem, but as of now this is my rating. The last thing I’ll say is that the power set seemed off, not to mention minimal. 5 types of powers to acquire would have made it a much more enjoyable game, with collecting license plates for some and cashes for another, it just seemed perfect to go along with the location markers for shadow powers. I sort of liked electric and bone, but shadow powers (besides the teeth) seemed awful. Poison is always a terrible game mechanic IMO. If the electric focused more on stun and damage, the shadow should have focused on stealth and damage, giving more damage on initial attacks, maybe even possible one shots with enough base damage. Two more power sets would have equaled out in the price for this game, maybe even a higher price point if it felt good. You’re a water creature, and tidal waves and controlling the water just would have felt right. Creating whirlpools and cyclones to help with boat fights. The bone felt like a damaging tank, electric felt like damaging stun machine, and the shadow should have felt like an assassin, but it didn’t. With two more avenues, it could have been an amazing game. Maybe an implementation of a skill tree would have solved a bunch of problems. I could say a ton more, but all I will say is I hope they’re listening to the reviews, because I could see myself getting another game like this, if they made a sequel. Maybe all prehistoric sea creatures would be fun, living through the ages. Anyway just a thought. I’m a writer, so if they want to hit me up for the sequel I’d be glad to help XD (shameless plug) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll start off by saying that I did actually have fun, and that's what games are supposed to be. It was a new idea and that deserves some credit. i find the graphics are good, and the core gameplay is definitely solid.

That being said, however, the potential for this game was wasted. There are 3 quests in the whole game: Kill fish, kill humans, kill Apex. After that you move on to the next area until you finish the game. They could have done ANYTHING, but that's what they came up with. i counted 3 Old God references... there could've been a quest to explore R'lyeh, fight the minions of the Old Ones and even Cthulhu himself to seal him away. There is an alien ship... why no have us fight underwater UFOs? There is an oil tanker... why no have a quest to find the person dumping oil, land-shark your way into the hotel and eat him? You're a mutated chark but there are no other mutated fish to hunt? Why not a quest to find an invisble fish using your shark senses? Literally thumb-sucking ideas is more fun.

The potential for this game is limitless, and the only reason that i can think of that this stuff was not in the game is that they ran out of either time or money, or they were just lazy. The fact i can't pick my species of shark is also a massive bummer, and that The Gulf is way too small. it needed to be at least as big as the rest of the map put together. Maybe even bigger.

Here's the big one though. The AI is dumber than a bag of hammers. All the humans do is scream.... no attempt to run/swim away, no interaction, literally all they do is stand there screaming. Like... a shark literally just beached itself and ate 5 people, are you seriously just gonna stand there? The fish AI is equally as dumb, where a level 1 fish will attack your max-level, fully mutated, living embodiment of "more teeth". What? Why? There is a perk that you get later that makes fish a smaller size than you neutral, but that only comes RIGHT AT THE END. That should be a feature hard-coded into the AI, not a bloody perk.

What I'm saying is coming from a place of love. I want this game to be better, and i hope to Lord Gaben that the devs expand on what they have, because the potential is, again, literally limitless. I did not die once, finished the game in 8.5 hours and 95% completed every zone.... there needed to be so much more, and i hope that there is at a later stage.

    What a shame.

The games concept is awesome I would have love to be a shark killing humans and other animals but they really failed to execute. The game is clearly for an 13+ age but the way it is designed looks like it was for ages 4+. It is cringey, the sharks evolution is bs. No replayibality what so ever.

I've played for 2 hours so far. The level progression is pretty bad and poorly planned. 90% of the missions they give you at level 1 are to kill level 8 or level 15 enemies. I still can't complete some of the first missions because they are against gangs of level 8s. Once I hit 6 I felt confident enough to tackle level 8 enemies, but that's when the level 8s start showing up in groups. It's easy to avoid the 8s and feed and complete objectives, but it just all feels very poorly planned and executed. Some new powers or abilities to explore would break up the monotony.

The Unreal engine crashed once in 2 hours. It's fairly stable and the graphics are good. The core mechanics work fine, and it competently meets the objective of a shark simulator.

If you are on the fence about this game and thinking "eating fish may get repetitive, but maybe there are some cool hooks and twists to keep things interesting", maybe pass or wait for a sale.

Nice game. It's the first game of such kind that I've ever played. I get a lot of fun just by swimming and eating fauna and people. Yes, it lacks content however there are some "fantasy"-like features. Not all gamers will like it. Nevertheless it's worth spending money and time.

If you want to be an underwater killing machine for 10 hours, terrorising stupid tourists and gradually growing from baby to mega shark with increasingly ridiculous super powers, this is for you. It's a relatively simple game that is stupidly good fun, but rather limited in scope and content.

Fun game. Love its sense of humor. Chris Parnel is the narrator and awesome in anything he does. The game is pretty beautiful and there's lots of cool little Easter eggs hidden in the water. The gameplay is pretty easy and I 100% everything within 14 hrs. Actually I was 2 license plates short to ACTUAL 100% but because the controls are so wacked they were impossible to get to. For some reason when I'm breaching/jumping to get items above water my shark wants to do a flip but won't do flips any other time. And it's not a consistent flip... it's just really annoying and impossible to control. Invisible walls block other possibilities to get the last 2 items. When attacking some of the tougher bosses all you need to do is evade and then attack constantly and the AI doesn't know what to do. Got this game for free on Epic so it was a nice time sink while recovering from a sprained ankle. Expand

A revenge story that is told through a reality tv style…
here you swim the swamps and oceans on your quest to become a mega shark.. and really this is just a game about dumb fun,
eating other animals, battling your way up the food chain, completing quests and finding collectables to progress through the story…
And again this is just a dumb fun game.. it’s a nice distraction.. as maneater overall is pretty repetitive and tedious after a while… a game that’s more fun with breaks in between a new rigion… I never really found the exploration to be fun or even aquring new skills or leveling up the different equippable upgrades.. this game is simply swim and either take on a hunted animal in that region, take on an apex animal which is a regions boss fights, do some population control or eat some humans… rinse repeat all the way til the end of the game..
Maneater is its most special during its first few hours as youre flaing with all the cool things you can do.. hopping on shore to snack on some human flesh.. antagonizing bounty hunters to come out and play so you can eat them and aquire a new upgradable item to increase your stains or gain a new ability… all of this is a blast… but it remains a blast to the past afterwards as maneater doesn’t really do much to keep you entertained beyond those first few hours..
eventually it just feels like a map cleaning game..
Ultimately though maneater is fun distraction… despite the tedium I thankfully had a revenge story pulling me through, and a progression system that actually felt like It mattered..
    I give maneater
    a 7/10

Maneater is a solid 7/10 imo, a small open world map where you find collectables, do side quests and eat things.
It's a power fantasy game, after an hour of playing I never found the game that challenging again. The different evolution upgrades are unrealistic but look really cool and are fun to use. :)
The graphics are pretty nice, It ran okay with frequent dips in fps. The controls

The controls felt really clunky at first and took some getting used to, may be better with a controller?
The human models / cutscenes look really bad and the story isn't really something to play it for.
I 100%'d the game after less than 12 hours of gameplay, it's pretty short but pretty easy to get everything.
I wish there was more upgrades, more animations, more missions and a bigger map, a bit of everything really, I hope that future DLC adds a lot more content into the game as it's fun and I can't find any other game like it.

I would recommend this game on sale if you enjoy a mindless power fantasy game where you eat things as a big shork :p

+1 which would be swimming around and eating things. Sometimes fish. Sometimes sharks. Sometimes humans. Sometimes boats. Swimming. Biting. Swimming. Biting. Nicely animated, pretty bloody, and you grow quite a bit, while...

-1 Swimming. Biting. Still swimming. Still biting.

+1 nice presentation, decent audio, and the controls are ok, while you are

-1 swimming. And biting. And swimming. And biting.

+/-0 sometimes you get to bite one of several collectables, and sometimes you get a little tourist-guide-style explanation, and sometimes those are funny

-1 then you swim some more, and you bite some more

+1 love the Attenborough-style commentator in the background, who, even though you really don't get to do a lot except for swimming and biting, finds something new to say even many hours into the game

+/- 0 swimming of course also means exploring, and while most areas have their own theme and style, the caves that you will have to crawl through to get a lot of stuff don't. They look nice, but are copy-pasted just like your fast-travel homes

-0.5 too often the camera will be your secondary enemy to fight, which at the start, when you are not yet quite invincible can be a problem with pretty much every primary enemy...

-0.5 which later on really does not matter any more because with certain upgrades it gets nearly impossible to die even with the camera spaszing out

+0.5 I still like the upgrade system and the different visual styles coming with it, but it's not a whole lot, and while you might choose another setup to challenge yourself, there is no real choice once you get the good ones

-2 in the later game I found myself crashing to the desktop more and more. Since the game autosaves very regularly that's not the worst thing ever, but since all you do is swimming and biting... and occasionally slapping things with your tail just to remember that biting does five times the damage... there came a point when I decided that after yet another crash I had enough swimming and biting for a lifetime.

It was worth it, and it was enjoyable, and it probably was all it could have been - sharks are pretty straightforward, even the mutated giant ones - it's not the best thing ever, but the best shark sim I've ever played.
