I just spent about 20 minutes writing up a fairly comprehensive review on this terrible, horrible game, but then I realised it's so bad it's not even worth that.

It is still plagued by bugs, has awful controls and incredibly underwhelming combat, and this is a year after release. It is not worth your time or your money. I wish I could have every hour I spent on this game back.

Maneater is fun for a couple of hours but then it gets extremely boring and repetitive also the graphics is outdated and there are only a limited number of upgrades.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Though I was very hyped about this game, it kind of let me down. Yes it was fun, but there was a few gripes I had that infuriated me. From capping your level at 30 when you’re supposed to be the king Of the ocean and having enemies higher level than you just felt wrong. Yes you had powers (and I’ll get into that more in a few) but that still doesn’t discount not feeling like the king of the ocean as you should. The controls began to hinder the gameplay and without a full lock on mechanic to enemies, it hurt the gameplay. With a few patches they could change this problem, but as of now this is my rating. The last thing I’ll say is that the power set seemed off, not to mention minimal. 5 types of powers to acquire would have made it a much more enjoyable game, with collecting license plates for some and cashes for another, it just seemed perfect to go along with the location markers for shadow powers. I sort of liked electric and bone, but shadow powers (besides the teeth) seemed awful. Poison is always a terrible game mechanic IMO. If the electric focused more on stun and damage, the shadow should have focused on stealth and damage, giving more damage on initial attacks, maybe even possible one shots with enough base damage. Two more power sets would have equaled out in the price for this game, maybe even a higher price point if it felt good. You’re a water creature, and tidal waves and controlling the water just would have felt right. Creating whirlpools and cyclones to help with boat fights. The bone felt like a damaging tank, electric felt like damaging stun machine, and the shadow should have felt like an assassin, but it didn’t. With two more avenues, it could have been an amazing game. Maybe an implementation of a skill tree would have solved a bunch of problems. I could say a ton more, but all I will say is I hope they’re listening to the reviews, because I could see myself getting another game like this, if they made a sequel. Maybe all prehistoric sea creatures would be fun, living through the ages. Anyway just a thought. I’m a writer, so if they want to hit me up for the sequel I’d be glad to help XD (shameless plug) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll start off by saying that I did actually have fun, and that's what games are supposed to be. It was a new idea and that deserves some credit. i find the graphics are good, and the core gameplay is definitely solid.

That being said, however, the potential for this game was wasted. There are 3 quests in the whole game: Kill fish, kill humans, kill Apex. After that you move on to the next area until you finish the game. They could have done ANYTHING, but that's what they came up with. i counted 3 Old God references... there could've been a quest to explore R'lyeh, fight the minions of the Old Ones and even Cthulhu himself to seal him away. There is an alien ship... why no have us fight underwater UFOs? There is an oil tanker... why no have a quest to find the person dumping oil, land-shark your way into the hotel and eat him? You're a mutated chark but there are no other mutated fish to hunt? Why not a quest to find an invisble fish using your shark senses? Literally thumb-sucking ideas is more fun.

The potential for this game is limitless, and the only reason that i can think of that this stuff was not in the game is that they ran out of either time or money, or they were just lazy. The fact i can't pick my species of shark is also a massive bummer, and that The Gulf is way too small. it needed to be at least as big as the rest of the map put together. Maybe even bigger.

Here's the big one though. The AI is dumber than a bag of hammers. All the humans do is scream.... no attempt to run/swim away, no interaction, literally all they do is stand there screaming. Like... a shark literally just beached itself and ate 5 people, are you seriously just gonna stand there? The fish AI is equally as dumb, where a level 1 fish will attack your max-level, fully mutated, living embodiment of "more teeth". What? Why? There is a perk that you get later that makes fish a smaller size than you neutral, but that only comes RIGHT AT THE END. That should be a feature hard-coded into the AI, not a bloody perk.

What I'm saying is coming from a place of love. I want this game to be better, and i hope to Lord Gaben that the devs expand on what they have, because the potential is, again, literally limitless. I did not die once, finished the game in 8.5 hours and 95% completed every zone.... there needed to be so much more, and i hope that there is at a later stage.

    What a shame.

The games concept is awesome I would have love to be a shark killing humans and other animals but they really failed to execute. The game is clearly for an 13+ age but the way it is designed looks like it was for ages 4+. It is cringey, the sharks evolution is bs. No replayibality what so ever.

AI is terrible, you jump on land and then all the humans just stand in place screaming. The combat is dreadful, you have a few attacks but when you realise that spamming attack is the most effective means of attack it makes the rest of the abilities moot.

Go and kill ten fish, go and kill 10 humans, go and kill 10 fish back over there etc etc etc. If you enjoy this then by all means play it, if however you want something that doesn't get boring within 2 hours go and play something else.

I still can't complete some of the first missions because they are against gangs of level 8s. Once I hit 6 I felt confident enough to tackle level 8 enemies, but that's when the level 8s start showing up in groups. It's easy to avoid the 8s and feed and complete objectives, but it just all feels very poorly planned and executed. Some new powers or abilities to explore would break up the monotony.

The Unreal engine crashed once in 2 hours. It's fairly stable and the graphics are good. The core mechanics work fine, and it competently meets the objective of a shark simulator.

If you are on the fence about this game and thinking "eating fish may get repetitive, but maybe there are some cool hooks and twists to keep things interesting", maybe pass or wait for a sale.

I first saw Maneater during a meeting at E3 2019. I was not able to play the game the as the developers opted for private meetings to show off the gameplay.

The game looked like a hysterical and gory experience where players play as a Shark and terrorize a coastal community.

The game casts players as a young Bull Shark whose mother is killed by a local fisherman named Scaly Pete. The game is set against the backdrop of a cable fishing series called “Maneater” which is being filmed in the area and Scaly Pete is a focal point of the series.

This also allows Chris Parnell to do some epic narrating as the game unfolds as he includes humor, information, and interesting facts along with his commentary.

Players must swim through local areas and feast on a number of aquatic creatures to gain essential elements as well as health. Once obtained the elements allow players to upgrade to various body types and abilities such as jaw, fin, tail, organ, and special abilities which will be needed to survive.

Players will be assigned various missions which are usually fairly routine and easy to accomplish such as eating a certain number of animals, munching some humans, and taking out various targets.

When enough of this has been done; players will then battle Apex Predators who provide more of a challenge.

The biggest challenges in the games come in the form of hunters as they appear when players start consuming the locals and their swarming and higher level tactics often required a hit and run approach.

Naturally as the shark evolves from a teen to adult and elder before reaching its final stage, this can become easier to deal with despite enemies gaining in strength and ability.

The biggest issue I had with the game was navigation as some areas were hard to reach as they required flopping on land from one point to another, navigating an underwater gate system, or navigating a map to find access to a new area.

Players can Fast Travel between their Grottos in each segment and this provides them a safe area to evolve and plan as well as review missions and game progress.

Aside from taking on dangerous predators such as Barracudas, Sharks, and Whales; taking on the hunters is great fun. Breaching to snatch humans on land is always fun and taking down a fleet of hunters with your jaws and tail is almost as much fun as hearing them scream when you are chomping down on them while executing some truly nimble moves.

If you become a big enough threat to the local human population, a celebrity hunter will come into play and dispatching them increases your reputation which helps you on your path to revenge and Scaly Pete.

The game is lots of fun to play and I had a great time playing it. The enemies and food chain was diverse and there was a great mix of humor along the finely detailed areas of play.

Some enemy A.I. was fairly basic as they did not do much in the way of tactics or evasion while others put up more of a challenge.

Despite this and a few small screen loading glitches late in the game that caused the load screen to come up before resuming my game; I had one of my best gaming experiences of the year with Maneater and it is one players should really enjoy.

A revenge story that is told through a reality tv style…
here you swim the swamps and oceans on your quest to become a mega shark.. and really this is just a game about dumb fun,
eating other animals, battling your way up the food chain, completing quests and finding collectables to progress through the story…
And again this is just a dumb fun game.. it’s a nice distraction.. as maneater overall is pretty repetitive and tedious after a while… a game that’s more fun with breaks in between a new rigion… I never really found the exploration to be fun or even aquring new skills or leveling up the different equippable upgrades.. this game is simply swim and either take on a hunted animal in that region, take on an apex animal which is a regions boss fights, do some population control or eat some humans… rinse repeat all the way til the end of the game..
Maneater is its most special during its first few hours as youre flaing with all the cool things you can do.. hopping on shore to snack on some human flesh.. antagonizing bounty hunters to come out and play so you can eat them and aquire a new upgradable item to increase your stains or gain a new ability… all of this is a blast… but it remains a blast to the past afterwards as maneater doesn’t really do much to keep you entertained beyond those first few hours..
eventually it just feels like a map cleaning game..
Ultimately though maneater is fun distraction… despite the tedium I thankfully had a revenge story pulling me through, and a progression system that actually felt like It mattered..
    I give maneater

+1 which would be swimming around and eating things. Sometimes fish. Sometimes sharks. Sometimes humans. Sometimes boats. Swimming. Biting. Swimming. Biting. Nicely animated, pretty bloody, and you grow quite a bit, while...

-1 Swimming. Biting. Still swimming. Still biting.

+1 nice presentation, decent audio, and the controls are ok, while you are

-1 swimming. And biting. And swimming. And biting.

+/-0 sometimes you get to bite one of several collectables, and sometimes you get a little tourist-guide-style explanation, and sometimes those are funny

-1 then you swim some more, and you bite some more

+1 love the Attenborough-style commentator in the background, who, even though you really don't get to do a lot except for swimming and biting, finds something new to say even many hours into the game

+/- 0 swimming of course also means exploring, and while most areas have their own theme and style, the caves that you will have to crawl through to get a lot of stuff don't. They look nice, but are copy-pasted just like your fast-travel homes

-0.5 too often the camera will be your secondary enemy to fight, which at the start, when you are not yet quite invincible can be a problem with pretty much every primary enemy...

-0.5 which later on really does not matter any more because with certain upgrades it gets nearly impossible to die even with the camera spaszing out

+0.5 I still like the upgrade system and the different visual styles coming with it, but it's not a whole lot, and while you might choose another setup to challenge yourself, there is no real choice once you get the good ones

-2 in the later game I found myself crashing to the desktop more and more. Since the game autosaves very regularly that's not the worst thing ever, but since all you do is swimming and biting... and occasionally slapping things with your tail just to remember that biting does five times the damage... there came a point when I decided that after yet another crash I had enough swimming and biting for a lifetime.

It was worth it, and it was enjoyable, and it probably was all it could have been - sharks are pretty straightforward, even the mutated giant ones - it's not the best thing ever, but the best shark sim I've ever played.

    My thoughts:
    1) The game is not a full-fleshed out AAA game, nor is it priced as such with a $40 pricetag
    2) You are a shark 3) You can jump up onto the beach, drag people into the water and then tailwhip them 20 feet into the air. 4) How could this possibly be a waste of 10 hours and $40 bucks? 5) This game is exactly what you think it is from watching the trailer. It is cotton

This is not a great game... I don't think the developers think this a great game. I don't think anyone who purchased the game expected it to be a great game. So what you get is a game that is true to itself, and doesn't try to be something it is not. Pick it up, or wait for a discount, can't go wrong either way. You are going to have about 8-15 hours of really good entertainment.

I feel like an 8 might be a bit of a high score for this relatively simple game, but despite some negative aspects, I had a lot of fun with it. It has some major glitches and is overall kind of silly. With that said, in a rather depressing year with a lot of "try hard" gaming narratives, Maneater was a great diversion. Seriously fun and didn't outstay its welcome.

But that isn't a bad thing here.

I played the original Shark Simulator game way back in 2006 (mad to think that game is nearing 15 years old!) and I loved it. It was a very simple game, much like Maneater, but it worked for what it was.

There are plenty of people complaining about the game for various reasons, from the story, to the graphics, to the design to... everything, really. But what you get with Maneater is exactly what you see advertised. There's no lies here, no deception, nothing.

The developers knew what they were making and even priced it as such, so you're not paying £50 or £40 for this game. But even though some say wait for a sale, I say buy it at full price. When you see a little under the radar game like this appear, I love to support the developers as best as I can.

Comparing Jaws Unleashed to Maneater is something that can be easily done, and surprisingly, I feel Jaws Unleashed gave more to offer in some areas than Maneater does. Jaws Unleashed had a rather good dismemberment system where you could bite off arms and legs, and tourists would be able to survive the attacks and even crawl out of the water to the beach if you let them do so. You could even bite off one limb at a time before eating the entire person.

Maneater lacks this dismemberment system, and I believe there was actually an interview with one of the devs who told the reason why. I think there may of been some of the developers from Jaws Unleashed working on this game, but don't take my word on that entirely.

Another thing Jaws Unleashed offered more was greater exploration. There was wide open beaches, zones of the deep sea and so many places you could go. While Maneater has plenty to explore, it doesn't stretch as far as Jaws Unleashed does. Also in Jaws, it gave that great fear factor. When in the deep sea zones, it gets pitch black the deeper you go. To this day, even after owning the game for nearly 15 years, I've still not been brave enough to venture all the way to the bottom! Suffice to say, the deep sea creeps me out.

But Maneater offers plenty of other things Jaws doesn't. You get to grow through stages, you get to evolve and you get to become a true Megalodon monster. The game won't last you long, either. Even if you're going for every trophy/achievement in it. I platinumed the game in about 3 or 4 days, and sits as my fasted ever plat.

But it's worth it. It's fun, it has some surprising moments of emotion, and the games soundtrack is a killer! (Pun intended!)

My favourite tune of all being the into music titled "Shark in the River" which you can find on Spotify for a taste of the tunes!

You likely won't ever go back to this game unless you ever fancy biting things to death as a mutant shark again, which honestly, I have a few times!

It also is a game that could spark a good franchise with better and improved future installments. The games story doesn't really leave a door open for a sequel, but I doubt it's that hard to write a story for a game about being a shark.

For a game that is exactly what it sells itself as and for a lower than usual price, along with the fact you'll get a good bit of fun and entertainment out of it, Maneater is worth at least one playthrough for any gamer who likes to try out all sorts of games.

It's a solid 8/10 for me. Not perfect, but a good game.

Animations on humans and animals when they get ripped of body parts should be better. a shark that gets rid of fins should not be able to continue fighting and a human that gets ripped of a leg will hardly continue to jump on one leg

The camera work feels shody during boss battles and is hard to pickup in the beginning but after a while, it grows on you as you level up.
